Tuesday scent of the day 12/26

Posted by Robin on 26 December 2017 244 Comments

Happy Boxing Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a little dab of Diptyque Eau des Sens while I try to wake up.

Reminder: on 12/29 we're doing Best of 2017...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2017.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m trying out a combo the Chanel rep at Neimans suggested and it is divine! I was complaining that my Sycomore Edp is too smoky and she suggested layering with Gabrielle (which I also don”t care for that much). Together they’re amazing!

I have a hair appt tomorrow and I’ve been Googling “chic bangs”. I know this won’t go well but every ten years I have to remind myself how awful I look with bangs by getting bangs.

I do the same… not so much bangs, but with some other cut style I think will work. The nice thing is…hair grows, so that’s why playing around with is fun. Here’s hoping you find those perfect bangs.

      HA HA HA!

I saw a picture of some celebrity or other recently, where the beauty/fashion blogger was raaaaving about how hot and sexy and “now” the celebrity’s bangs were. Me, I was looking at the picture and thinking, “Wow, she looks like me in 2nd grade. That’s SO not sexy.”

(Not to say that bangs in themselves are awful, just really amused that a style considered appropriate for 8-year-olds ca. 1976 is now considered hot.)

Yes. Bangs have a way of looking like elementary school and corduroy rompers and Elmers School glue.

If 1976 is now hot, I’m finally in style! Lol! Not humiliated to admit that yesterday I watched some old Christmas show from the 70’s- you know: Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Cher, Glen Campbell. Looking back, they all seemed so fresh and “real.” Strange days of nostalgia I’m experiencing…

I used to try bangs every 3-4 years. I blame Amelie. However, my hair has become curly over the last 5 years and the last time I got bangs it was even worse than usual. No more bangs for me.

Yep. Curly hair + bangs is not a winning combination. But I do love heavy bangs + chic 20s bob – a cut that’s not an option with my curly hair ;) (Though I am, incidentally, growing my hair into a curly bob ATM.)

LOL… I just cut my own bangs two days ago. I probably look 8 but at 51, I could stand to look younger. Anyway, I like it so who cares. Years ago I figured out that people are so focused on themselves they barely notice what you look like. Beauty comes from within! Enjoy your bangs. :-)

and I am Camp Bangs. I have ruler straight hair and it grows fast…I have taken to trimming my bangs when they get to be slightly below my eyebrows…if I didn’t do it myself, I would probably be at the hairdresser’s every third week, I kid you not.

When I was in hospital with Alex after his operation I could hear the nurses outside his room beginning to talk about a strong smell of rotting flowers, like dead lillies. A small group formed , all wondering where the smell was coming from. I’d just spent the afternoon in the perfume counter trying various Baiser Vols and la pantheres and chanels etc. so knew it was me…,had to quickly open the window and sit next to it, pretending to read.

Yes she is making progress. Slowly. Baby steps. I think she still has to stay in hospital for at least another week. But she is managing more and more stuff by herself now. For instance, today she started taking her medication / pills orally, before they were given by a drip (is that the right word?).

I work in hospitals a lot. Always amazed at the few patient rooms which state, “no perfume allowed” . I understand the idea of not wearing a lot of scent around sick people but Jeez the whole place smells of poop and wounds ( in various amounts, depending on which hospital). What is the big deal about a little Chanel No. 5? My latest idea is every hospital should have a coffee bar to improve the ambient aromas.

NOT at the hospital for a few more days and wearing Sula Musk oil.

Happy Boxing Day, my dear NSTers! I had a deep hankering this morning for some sweet, acidic rose—something like Rose Infernale. Alas, I’m at my parents’ house with only my mother’s (very sweet or else migraine-inducingly vintage) perfumes, and only a few samples of my own, so I went for the closest thing: Penhaligons Halfeti. It’s a lovely rose, but it clashes kind of horrifically with my mother’s fried butternut squashes cooking away in the kitchen. Oof.

Hope you’re all doing wonderfully! What are some smelly presents you’ve all gotten? Most of my presents (from my parents) are clothes, but I did get a bunch of lovely-smelling l’Occitane hand creams.

Ginger Biscuit is a blind buy…..but I love Demeter Gingerbread enough to know that it’s gonna be a winner! LOL

From the looks of things on Ebay, if I didn’t love it for some reason, I could definitely sell for a profit…WOW!

YES! I think it just launched in the last couple of weeks or so! It’s supposed to be a lighter version of Stash original!

I bought the Lovely Sheer (lighter version of Lovely) and I LOVE it, so hoping Stash Unspoken is the same idea….

MERRY CHRISTMAS (belated) to you and T-Rex! :)

I got a bottle of Bois Farine from my family, and I gave myself the traveler set of Cuir d’Ange, Santal Massoia, Vetiver Tonka and Osmanthe Yunnan. My dad gave my mom a bottle of Chanel No. 5 EDP, which my three year old niece threw at her (she was supposed to take granny her present). Fortunately, the living room is carpeted!

It’s the year of tea for me, besides the usual gift cards. I did get smellies from my sister-in-law and niece in the form of homemade body bar soap, lip balms and a mini candle. Last year, they made chocolates. It’s nice to see them collaborating on a Christmas project.

I got too many from me to me perfume gifts – among others, I got Dusita La Douceur de Siam, Grandiflora Queen of the Night, Bottega Venetta Velours, a 50 mL bottle of JM Myrrh and Tonka, Rising Phoenix attars and the newest one just ordered today – Slumberhouse Baque. I think that’s it.

A Christmas miracle for me, my boss gave me today off! No dealing with returns today! Its 5 degrees plus wind chill and 7 plus inches of snow. I’m not going anywhere. I forgot about this weeks project and am in a total perfume fail. Because it’s so cold I thought I could handle more than 2 dabs if Black Orchid. Then I thought, oh I should see if I can wear Hanae Mori Haute Couture in the cold(since I couldn’t over the summer) now I just have a headache. But I’m home and warm so yay! Wishing everyone a good day!

I’m taking advantage of my office mate being off today and wearing lots of sprays. I brought my sample so I can reapply later!

Yes, Unsettled was also released this year. It was made for the Nevada Museum of Art for an exhibition of the same name. One of the inspirations is Patou’s Colony, which I’ve never smelled. Unsettled falls in the same vein as Seyrig and Room 237 but adds the fruitiness of pineapple.

I got my sample of Ummagumma in the same package, and I immediately fell in love with it. I like Unsettled, but I need to spend more time with it.

I have a sample of Unsettled that I’ve put away until spring? Should I try it now? Judging by the notes I assumed it wouldn’t be at its best in the winter chill.

            26 December 2017 at 4:43 pm

Hoping everyone had a great holiday! I was exhausted from 3 mad days at work and spent Christmas Eve day runnning errands to grocery stores (Fred Myers was PACKED!), doing laundry, post-office, blah blah blah.

Spent Christmas eating and sleeping since once again it rained all day. Feeling a bit recharged today so I’m sporting the lovely Salomé on a very frosty morning.

I’m headed into town to pick up T-Rex’s belated Christmas gift. I bought her a slim little hiking pack so she can carry her own treats, a bit of water, and an extra set of keys when we go on day hikes (which we haven’t in a while because the weather is not cooperating).

Hope everyone is able to take the day to recover from the festivities.

I’m wearing Bois Farine and enjoying a very, very cold day from the living room of my parent’s house. I’ll be heading back to much warmer climes tomorrow.

It always amazes me how different a perfume is from a dabbed vial versus sprayed from a bottle. If you had told me there was iris in Bois Farine when I was trying it from the dabbler, I would have taken your word for it but I never smelled it, just yummy woods. But sprayed, the iris is the first thing that really catches my attention, and it’s just so darn beautiful!! What an awesome surprise.

Merry Christmas again! Hope you’re not feeling too sad about the day after. I’m wearing Tacit as it suits the heat and mugginess. They’ve started hay making on the hill opposite and it reminds me of when I was a kid lifting bales onto the tractor and getting incredibly sunburnt, scratched and tired with terrible hay fever but loving it. The satrs have been extra twinkly recently: Sirius just sparkles like crazy ( across from Orions belt ) …the dog days of summer are here!

    SotD = Ambre Narguile

Over the past several days I alternated AN with LADDM. The spicy warmth contrasting with the cool resins is delicious. The Tauer dry down is long lasting yet gentle. I adore it.

This morning I heard my neighbor rolling his trash and recycling cans to the curb. I sat inside the warm house thinking how cold he must be, then laughed when I realized I forgot to put mine out. Brrr, cold hands! Thank goodness for neighbors who know what day it is.

It’s jarring to be back to the workaday world, but a bit of a relief as well. The Time Being is, in a sense, the most trying time of all. Hope everyone has leftovers to warm up for dinner and a cookie or two or a bite of chocolate for dessert. :)

SOTD is Papillon “Anubis”, to make travelling more pleasant. The Ryanair flight was fine, not just by their but by any standards. We have checked into a beachfront Airbnb apartment for a week.

I’m not a tea person but right now I’m drinking a “Capricho del Obispo” tea which is black tea, cinnamon, verbena and sloe gin, made with hot milk rather than water. A great Winter drink. :^)

I only have samples of four 2017 releases, so I am going to wear them this week whether they are the ‘best’ or not. ;)

SOTD is Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria. It’s a nice but rather unremarkable bergamot with terrible longevity (although all bergamot centric scents seem to have terrible longevity on my skin). OK, but not the best Allegoria I’ve tried.

I’ll have to think about 2017 releases – I know I’ve tried a few new things, but I’m not sure I have any samples on hand. No perfume as I contemplate the day, our glorious summer weather disappeared yesterday. Farmers are pleased to have rain, I’m not so delighted.

My new bottle of Idole will be a big comfort :) I bought it as my present to myself, but then I decided it was somehow less self-indulgent to call it a present from my beloved – so he’s pleased he’s given me such a nice present!

Today’s SOTD is Chanel No 19 vintage EDP layered over the body cream.
My scented gifts this Holiday were bottles of No 19 and and vintage EL’s Knowing – the hubby let me pick, he was a little intimidated to choose for me.

Hello all! I am back home for a few days to unpack Xmas gifts and extra bags of bows and wrapping paper, and to be nurtured by my sweet kitties. I don’t have to do anything or go anywhere today after this, what a pleasure to stay at home! I began the morning in Jubilation 25 but when I got back home and checked my mail, found that my Christmas present to myself had arrived: samples of Zoologist Camel and Elephant! I couldn’t wait so sprayed one on the back of each hand. Wow, these two are winners! Elephant opens with such a juicy green smell. It’s now quieting down into something more meditative. Camel is very sweet, fruity, and spicy—might be a Lutens! But it also includes a real buttery aspect. These both seem subtle and complex. They’re great additions to the zoo! I have no plans this week, other than getting caught up on movies. I want to go see Call Me by Your Name which is on several Best 10 lists. I know it’s a cult book, but haven’t read it.

Enjoying a lazy day around the house. I had a wonderful first Christmas in New Mexico. My love spoiled me. I am so amazed at what a great gift giver he is- he remembers things I say in passing I need or want throughout the year and then actually gets them. My perfume gift was No. 19 edp. Woot woot! I did tell him that was the perfume I wanted but everything else was a surprise.

We also opened presents with my mom, sister, BIL , and two year old nephew who was the cutest. He was overwhelmed with all his presents and just ran around with a constant smile on his face! I do really miss my son in Alabama, but he is coming out next week so I will get to see him soon!

Today was a balmy 8F when I was dressing this morning, so I decided to layer one of my favorite tuberoses, DSH Noel Enchante, over the matching body butter that I splurged on Saturday when I visited Dawn’s studio. More specifically, Noel a Enchante is a tuberose chypre, with a gorgeous base of oak moss, a tiny dose of patch, a light touch of jasmine, and some yummy benzoin and tolu. It’s probably her most unexpected fragrance from her annual holiday release, and easily wearable from fall into spring.

I had an amazing time visiting with Dawn on Saturday; a 2.5 hour sniffathon of new and revisited scents. I came away with a refill of a favorite, an update of an earlier fragrance, 2 body butters in scented with favorites, and multiple newer scents in Dawn’s adorable new 10ml rollerball pens. Save one other brief customer, I had all of Dawn’s time and attention to myself, and learned all about her inspirations for some of her new scents, her approach to her line of Japanese-inspired scents (believe it or not, Japan is now her biggest market!), and why I never ‘got’ Chanel No 5 until I tried a vintage ‘60s EDC. I could happily give up every other house and wear DSH exclusively! What a total treat to get the opportunity to spend the afternoon with one of the most genuine, thoughtful, generous, gifted, and vibrant people ever. Every visit is a total pleasure. If you’re ever in the Denver area, it is absolutely worth the 45 minute drive up to Boulder to visit her studio.

I am feeling a bit of the post-Christmas blues. Yesterday was so fun though with all the grandchildren and grown-up kids. It’s just that going from 16 for dinner to just me is a bit of a let-down. Going to shake myself out of it and go make a turkey pie for dinner. Husband had to work today so that doesn’t help either. The perfumed gift that I bought for myself (Aroma M Nobara-Cha) was a disappointment so I consoled myself with some on-line boxing day sales. I got a sample of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla with it though and it is definitely hitting the spot for me today. Thanks NST for being there on good days and not-so-good.

It was a HUGE adjustment for me these past two years, going from big family gatherings at my Mom’s place two the last two Christmas days completely on my own.And somewhat liberating as well!
It was a conscious decision on my part to do this after my Mom passed last year. Not to say that it will be like that indefinitely, but having my own company, great food and wine, music and my own thoughts, did me good.
Hope your day was not too much of a let down today!x

SOTD is Philosophy Amazing Grace–something light and quiet since my older son is getting his wisdom teeth out today and I don’t want to wear anything too strong in cause he’s nauseated. We had a nice, quiet Christmas. Gifted myself with a 1 oz bottle of Angel Muse and some Bronze Goddess whipped body cream, both found on deep discount at TJMaxx. Also found 2 Demeters there–Eggnog and Myrrh. I was a very good girl! Also saw gift sets of Philosophy Fresh Cream and The Body Shop White Musk EDT while there, but held off as the Fresh Cream is not that different from things I already have and I already have White Musk EDP. Sure is tempting, though!

Maybe it’ll work for a novice but I don’t think that people who spent years in trying hundreds of perfumes are that influenced by “marketing.”
I have bottles that I bought to have those bottles – but they decorate my dresser, and it never occurs to me to wear those perfumes. And I bought decants of perfumes in the greatest packaging – because I didn’t want more than 10-15ml of them. I might be influenced to try perfume from the brand I like/respect or if I love the bottle but I wouldn’t be moved just by those to wear those perfumes.

Hello, NST! Happy Boxing Day! I’m pleased to report that Christmas dinner was a delicious success, despite us never having cooked a beef roast in the smoker before. We did learn a few tips to make the next time even tastier, so looking forward to that, even if it will be a while. Plenty of delicious leftovers for the rest of the week.

Some other good news on my end: my mom had a successful cataract surgery this morning. When I talked to her on the phone, she was still a little out of it from the anesthesia. I am planning on calling her back tomorrow to see how she is doing then.

SOTD = Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka, from the decant stash. It is absolutely perfect for this time of year.

Yes, super easy, as far as ocular surgery goes. People that have advanced cataracts get the most bang because their visual acuity (if a lens implant is used) and clarity is immediately corrected. I had an early cataract develop due to retinal surgery the year prior (a side effect of instrumentation during retinal repair), so just didn’t notice much change. Most people are quite thrilled with not only he result, but the ease of surgery and quick recovery. It’s not without risks of course, but the percentage of bad outcomes is pretty infantismal.

Now that we are home I’m in Chanel No 19 EDT from my recent vintage bottle off Evil bay.

I ended up wearing Cuir de Lancome yesterday for Christmas dinner.

    Note to self:
Follow your lunch and spray your perfume before you get dressed. I had a stain on my silk shirt in a very obvious spot from spraying the inside of my top AFTER I got dressed. Thankfully I had a backup shirt to wear.

We have about $200 on our Shoppers rewards card to spend. Soon the points are being transitioned to Superstore, so I wanted to get some Chanel Coco body butter today but the location we were at doesn’t carry Chanel. I’ll have to go to my local location this week and get my gift “to me”.

    Have a lovely week everyone!
