Wednesday scent of the day 12/20

Posted by Robin on 20 December 2017 218 Comments

Hump Day, and International Human Solidarity Day (plus the all-important Sangria Day). What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Jean Patou Joy, in vintage extrait.

Reminder: 12/22 will be 'Tis The Season Friday...wear the perfect fragrance to celebrate, share joy and look forward to a new year. Suggested by happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017 or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown above is Joy in the Baccarat Pure Parfum edition, 30 ml for $1,800 ("An exclusive luxury fragrance for exceptional women—only 50 limited-edition inscribed Baccarat Pure Parfum bottles are created each year for Jean Patou Joy") at Neiman Marcus.

    Now I’m craving Sangria.

    Have an amazing day.

Ummagumma is so good. It is a new favorite for the holidays and the days to come. I think my bottle will finish very fast.

Glannys, it’s the rare resinous perfume that smells beautiful in both cold and really hot weather. The key is avoiding humidity, it does best in drier weather.

Thanks, sounds really good. I like Diptyque woods and resins. Pity it’s seems to be one of those hard to sample exlusive scents.

By the way, I do not think I told you before, but (being an owner/servant of a yellow-eyed black cat) I really like your avatar. :)

I have tried the Intense, and it’s quite well-done. Yes, spicier and slightly more incense-focused than the regular edp, but also less creamy and floral, so it might depend on which parts of Parfum Sacre you like best as to whether you would like it better. For myself, after using up a 3ml spray of Intense, I decided I preferred the regular. I can’t remember if there’s a price difference.

I also got to try a sample of the original-release parfum dated from ca. 1992 or 93. Now THAT was amazing.

I love the creamy aspect of Parfume Sacre, however, being an incense lover I was wondering if there was a noticeable difference with the Intense version.

Wearing Eau de Gentiane Blanche. There is clearly something wrong with the spray mechanism on the bottle. It leaked all over this morning. I only have about 20 ml left in this bottle, so now I have a new 2018 perfume goal–use this up while I can still get something out of the sprayer.

I am wearing Alahine from a set of samples I bought last week on ebay, hoping they were old stock. Hoping that if they weren’t old stock, they would still smell good and I could discount the worry that Alahine had been badly reformulated.

    NOPE.

It started off well, smelled like it should (sharp aromatic top, rich florals of rose and ylang, clear golden amber underneath), and then over the next hour began to morph into something that resembled a car fire: rubber, metal, smoke. My head hurts and my throat is burning.

And I’m crushed. How dare they? I can never give it its delighted squealy extra i’s again. I shall be forced to hoard my vintage bottle. I mean, this isn’t just disappointing compared to the original; it is actually a bad fragrance now. Shame on you, Teo Cabanel.

I must go scrub and put on a small spritz of the Real Alahiiiiine from The Bottle Which Must Now Be Guarded.

In other news, I just got a holiday card email from the tractor people saying, “WARM HOLIDAY WISHES from all of us at John Deere Financial.” Really, all of you at JDF? To whom I’ve never actually spoken, because I pay the farm bills online? Psssh. I am cynical.

Oh, I’m sure they do wish their customers well in a generic sense. And if it had been an actual paper card from the people we actually deal with at the local franchise, that wouldn’t have struck me as weird at all. This? was just weird.

Even before reading your post, I planned to wear Alahine today. Now I’ll add an extra spray to fully enjoy it in its old glory. I’m really disappointed. I’d rather they discontinued perfume if they can’t produce it any more for the regulations reason than to butcher it.

I can’t either, and it’s not generally something I’m gaga for. Vanilla and patchouli is pretty much all I’ve been craving since winter set in. I don’t have enough of either in my collection, though. *Must rectify*

One that would be perfect for this week’s theme, and that I keep thinking about is Vanilla Hinoki. Unfortunately, I already ran through my decant so I guess I need some more.

I’m trying Commodity Leather today. It’s reminding me of a polite Lonestar Memories, which makes me realize that I never wanted a polite version of Lonestar Memories.

I’m curious how long it will last – I timed the longevity of their Bergamot yesterday and it was 45 minutes. Too bad, because I liked it a lot.

Have a wonderful last Wednesday before Christmas! Enjoy your day and don’t forget that you are all amazing people who smell incredible.

SotD = Eau des Merveilles. Hello, old friend.

I’m off to Costco this morning to buy some of the food for this weekend’s eating marathon. We will have a large-ish family gathering on Sunday. I look forward to feeding four teenagers who eat like it’s going out of style.

In happy and strange there-is-order-to-the-universe news:

Last week I decided to knit a hat for a friend’s soon-to-arrive baby. As I was heading out the door for a doctor appointment, I grabbed my favorite 30 years-old pair of knitting needles (cue ominous music) and a new ball of yarn. After signing in at the doctor’s office, I sat down to wait. I looked in my handbag, pulled out the yarn, but found my needles were gone! I’d dropped them en route. Argh. I retraced my steps to the reception desk, hallway, restroom, elevator, the long walk on the sidewalk and street crossings to the parking lot, around and under my car, then finally in the driveway at home. No needles. Boo. I went in the house and spent a few minutes uselessly trawling the internet looking for a replacement, then put it out of mind. Yesterday I came home from work mid-day, got out of the car, and the needles were right in front of me on the driveway. They were either hidden under blowing leaves or just hiding in plain sight. I thought, “Gee, I should get my eyes checked.” And that’s why I was at the doctor’s office in the first place. :)

So as Tigger would say, “TTFN, I’ve got some bouncin’ to do.” Have a wonderfully fragrant day, everyone.

thanks, Elisa, I am glad too. I’ve knit so many baby hats with them, it was wonderful to find them again.

Mercury in retrograde! Perhaps that is why I lost the needles and also why I gave up my search quickly, an unusual course for me. Typically I go nuts looking for something lost, expend too much time and energy, and don’t find it easily or at all. Lesson learned. :)

Hurrah for being reunited! A few years ago I got home from work and realized one of my (favorite) earrings had fallen out of my ear at some point during the day. I was utterly crestfallen. The next day as I was walking my usual route from car to office door I happened to look down and see it buried under some wet leaves. Such relief and joy – congrats! And hope your eye exam went well :)

It’s neat that you found your earring the next day! I am very sentimental about jewelry so I can imagine that finding it felt wonderful.

Hello, all. Carday has been and gone. We’re very pleased with it, though the real test will be the drive to Whanganui tomorrow. We have already passed the first milestone for a new car: we have put 100 km on the clock by driving out to collect kitten supplies from the breeder. If we buy their beef and rabbit from her, it is precisely half the price it is at the supermarket, and since the smalls eat about 1kg of beef every 2 days, plus rabbit, some wallaby, some salmon and other bits for variety, it is well worth stocking up every two or three weeks.

My SOTD is the remnants of last night’s Lyric. Goodness me, I’m about to utter a heresy: I’m not convinced I still like it. It’s a bit…obvious. No, that’s not right, because after all, I like Queen of the Night and Sahara Noir, and 1270 and Loukhoum. And Misia. They aren’t exactly quiet, unassuming perfumes. But something is amiss between me and Lyric. I will get to the bottom of this, or I will end up with the most expensive bathroom spray in the history of bathrooms.

A shower comes next, and then the application of a cool, slim perfume for the heat, some desultory housework, and packing. Maybe beautiful L’Ombre dans L’Eau or the dimly green and greenly dim Ninfeo Mio. Or the bright, sharp-edged Acqua Viva. You can see where my mood is going: away from the heavy and even slightly pompous Lyric. Be well, all and enjoy your gorgeous winter scents.

It could just be the day, or the season, that made it not quite right. But having that kind of experience with a favorite can be so off-putting, it always takes me a long time to get over it.

I had a craving for white flowers today, and Fracas hits the spot for winter flowers so beautifully.
Just finished decorating the living room with my Nan’s 1930’s Christmas decorations and evergreen foliage, starting to feel Christmassy! I also made evergreen wreaths for the front door and a special grave my family is visiting tomorrow; conifer, yew, holly a ivy, and some red ribbon. Drinking endless cups of milky chai.
Will probably wear Fille en aiguille tomorrow, as a nod to all this lovely green Christmassy smell, and will have to have some gingerbread too.

I stayed in my nightclothes well past 10 a.m. but now I am dressed and have breakfasted on a homemade Rice Krispy treat. I could have chased it with some sangria, but hey, the day is young. The spice candle is lit, there’s a fire in the fireplace, and I am feeling quite festive. Unfortunately, it’s laundry and turn the mattress day, which doesn’t quite match up with “festive,” but the sangria awaits, so there is hope. I am wearing DSH Café Noir, very nice indeed.

Just a quick pop-in to say HELLLLOOOO everyone! My comments always look pretty boring compared to those of Bear….lol(Hi Bear!)
Merry Christmas from me to me done: Frederic Malle set of 20 10ml perfumes plus atomizer. The set works out much cheaper than if I were to buy 20 10mls individually so I am happy with that.
The Dutch shop Skins Cosmetics opened doors here, they stock EVERYTHING from Roja Dove/Kilian/Maison Francis Kurkdjian and many more awesome niche houses.Even Vilhelm!Happiness!
SOTD Ex Nihilo Sweet Morphine.A tad too soft but quite lovely.
    Be well all!

I noticed some lilacs in full bloom yesterday. They were introduced to Otago around 1850 with the first European settlers and you quite often see the trees in paddocks near ruined farm houses down our way ( where it is cold in winter). So, lilacs and linden…what a combination for summer. We had christmas dinner yesterday as my mother was here but will probably be busting out the BBQ on the day itself. Wearing Gris Claire and French Lime Blossom so far…more later!

Sprayed a light dusting of Pacifica Sandalwood early this a.m. and was surprised by how lovely the drydown is. I got a bottle in the last swapmeet and I’ve used it as a room spray quite a bit but it hasn’t spent a lot of time on my skin. I need to wear it again with a heavier hand, and was going to top-up until I read the article Robin linked on LL Santal 33 and sprayed that instead.

It’s one I’ve tested before and passed along to my H, as I found it too masculine. When I sprayed it today I thought, “no, it’s a style thing, not a masculine thing” that’s the problem for me. Turns out it’s both. Stylistically, it stands alongside Tom Ford (not my favorite house, though I’ve surprised myself by enjoying Noir Pour Femme quite a bit this season.) And it does remind me of a classic men’s fragrance – Fahrenheit or Grey Flannel maybe? All 3 have violet, which I usually love but is too much here, so perhaps I’m not too far off.

And now that I’m thinking about it… while reading the article Robin linked about Santal 33 I scoffed at its supposed ubiquity, as I’d never smelled it until a few months ago. But last weekend I took an hour-long bus ride and kept getting whiffs of something nice-smelling. I knew it wasn’t me, and realized just before disembarking that it was probably whatever the guy across from me was wearing. I thought it smelled a bit like Grey Flannel, but maybe it was LL! ;) HA!

Hello, dear NST friends! To begin, I’d like to apologize for worrying some of you last week. I’m ok! I’m still congested, but I’ve been able to sleep mostly through the night for the past couple days with the help of Robitussin, and there’s been no bloody cough since I mentioned it last week. So there is nothing at all to worry about :)

However, there’s something else to worry about: the Dior SA tells me they’re going to scrap the whole Collection Privée next year!!! In favor of ~five very feminine scents in pretty pastel colors. This is especially sad because now that I’ve finally gotten to smell some of them, I’ve fallen for Gris Montaigne. Mmmmm what a scent. But who needs 4.2 oz of it????

On the other wrist, I’ve got the exquisite Portrait of a Lady. Every time I wear it, I wonder why I wear anything else. Yes, I wonder that about a number of scents.

I hope you are all having a splendid week! Stay healthy and safe, and happy holidays!

This is the second time I’ve heard that worrying rumour. Glad I bought my bottles when they were released earlier. Sounds like a stupid decision but Dior must have their reasons.

I am happy to hear you are doing better!

The SA said (though I have no proof) that the privee had been selling well, so I don’t get it. Glad you’ve got some bottles you like!! I’m thinking of snatching up some decants.

        And thanks :)

Bummer about the Dior Privees. I love Gris Montaigne and I’m going through my decant quickly, yikes! I also quite liked Bois d’Argent. All seemed elegant and understated but I guess they’re not big sellers.

Super late in the day to draw attention to this, so probably no one will see it – but I’d meant to mention that some of the Berdoues Grand Crus, as well as the Floris Wardrobe set that was featured in one of the Holiday shopping guides, are 30% off at Anthropologie. Not sure how long the sale will last (today may be the last day.)
