Tuesday scent of the day 12/19

Posted by Robin on 19 December 2017 223 Comments

Happy Tuesday, and happy Oatmeal Muffin Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: a little dab of Box of Eels.

Reminder: 12/22 will be 'Tis The Season Friday...wear the perfect fragrance to celebrate, share joy and look forward to a new year. Suggested by happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017 or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Bernardaud Grenadiers Teapot is $298 at Chelsea Gifts.

    Good Tuesday everyone!

Robin, I’m joining you in sandalwood with the powerhouse Samsara EdT. I have two vintage bottles that smell a bit different and naturally I prefer the smaller bottle’s juice! My 100ml is a bit shrill, though always garners compliments. The 50ml, though, has a gorgeous sandalwood praline effect, a bit sweet but definitely not overpowering. I’m glad I got to try it again.

I am wearing Les Liquides Imaginaires Dom Rosa. I got a sample because I saw it described as a scent of champagne and roses (fitting for the theme of celebration). It does smell like a sparkling wine during first minute – bubbly, effervescent and merry. The rose is there too – a sweet, almost syrupy rose. The whole effect is surprisingly innocent and light. This is how I’d expect an alcohol-free ‘champagne’ for kids to smell (though it probably smells nothing like this). Just after a minute or two after application, grapefruit takes over. It’s a delicious, tart, juicy grapefruit. I quite enjoyed this stage. But again, it did not stay like that long. Now, approximately 20 minutes after spraying, it’s a very faint fragrance. I can smell rose, grapefruit and pear a little when I bring my wrist to my face. Gone far too soon. 🙁 Who knows, it may perform better in spring. I have a feeling that this is a warm weather scent.

SOTD is Slumberhouse Vikt which with its chewy edible resins does feel very seasonal, although not in a cheerful way more in a Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening way, or maybe like my favorite Christmas movie Rare Exports, where Santa is a dark ancient power hidden for years beneath the earth… (If you haven’t seen this movie go check out the trailer, it is an incredible treat and actually quite uplifting!)

I really like Rare Exports too! A theatre in Seattle is showing it this weekend, but I’ll probably just rewatch it at home because it’s streaming on Amazon.

My favorite Christmas movies are Home Alone, Die Hard, and Black Christmas (original 1974 version). For interested parties, Black Christmas is very creepy and disturbing. Not for the faint of heart.

I wore the edt, which I took a long time coming around to, a ton this past summer, and tried the edp in early fall. When I first tried the edp I was struck by how different it is from the edt (particularly the opening, which is much less sweet.)

I bought a large decant of the edp from the splitmeet and have been wearing it exclusively since then and aside from the opening I can’t remember what differences I initially detected between the 2. According to my notes, they were different enough that I thought it warranted having both, and that the edp was richer, heavier (though “less diaphanous” is probably a better description) and woodier.

I spent a lot of time trying to find an affordable bottle of the edt, but I’ll be perfectly happy with the edp if that never happens. The edp splitter still has some available, btw, and I can give you her contact info if you want it.

My SOTD (or morning) is Orris by Commodity – I picked up one of their storybook sample packs at Sephora while shopping yesterday. Orris is not a hit with me – I love iris scents, but this is a sweet iris scent, not a dry and rooty one. Oh well, 14 more to try!

Canadian NSTers – do any of you happen to know how much a 75ml bottle of a Chanel exclusif EDP costs here? I can’t find that info anywhere. If I happen to go into Holt Renfrew and one just happens to want to come home with me, I want to know how much it’s going to cost me. (Just hypothetically, of course. Not that I’m planning a trip downtown later this week.)

I’m wearing another discontinued Smell Bent, Snobirds, which is a perfume oil. Fragrantica describes it as “orange blossom, amber, resins, sugar, patchouli, cardamom and ginger”. When I put it on, there was a distinct orange smell, like the orange in the candy that you whack on a table and unwrap, which then falls into pieces shaped like orange segments. Now there is a general spicy sweetness, but nothing distinctive.

That sounds intriguing: how do you make them, or how do they turn out? I’m curious. I had a phase of making many different flavours of ice cream for fun, and cranberry turned out to be the best and most popular–also by far the prettiest–such a deep lovely shade of pink!

Going to crack into the little Berdoues sampler I got from Sephora with a coupon. Which to try? Which to try! Then, although I should clean up this tiny home that has gotten out of hand, I must go hide out to continue frantically trying to finish the knitting project.

Vintage Samsara parfum today for wrapping and bill-paying. Yummy.

I adore nutcrackers — they’re the only thing I collect. So far, though, I have managed not to collect anything BUT the nutcrackers, i.e., no nutcracker-themed socks or shower curtains or trash bins or cookie jars. And I’m tempted by that lovely teapot, but not to the tune of 300 smackers. Went over to Zazzle and found this, though, at 10% of the cost of that one: https://www.zazzle.com/xmas_nutcracker_teapot-180665470993323250

(note to self: just the nutcrackers, just the nutcrackers, nothing else)

Morning, NST. Today is Carday. I’m so excited that I’m feeling a bit silly, and I wanted a giddy perfume….I cannot think of a perfume that I own that says “Giddy, happy, all good things.” That is to say, in their own way, they all do, but nothing stands out as particularly light-hearted and frivolous. I’ve chosen Cuir de Russie, not light-hearted at all, but it does have a certain dash, I suppose. An insouciance, even. Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I’m loving reading all the winter choices of NST-ites up in the other hemisphere. Every single perfume I read about is making me think, “Oooh, I wish I were wearing that!” I think that says something about my preferences for the seasons. I was born at the end of May, and that’s my favourite time: late autumn. In a bad year, it might be early winter, but generally, it’s cool, not cold, and the air is very clear. The shadows are blue and the light is silver. All this unchanging golden sunshine we’re having now is a bit boring to me, though having said that, I can hear a regular pattering on the roof next door that. suggests it might be raining. Good-o. We could do with it.

Well, off I pootle to start the day. Be well, all. Hannahmom, I didn’t say anything, but I thought of you. I’m glad indeed that your situation has been determined early and can be treated quickly.

I am in a unicorn scent–something called Greek Keys by Sarah Baker. My mom picked up the sample at an arts fair in Napa from the perfumer herself. Ostensibly, she works out of London, but she is also a performance artist manufacturing her image as a status symbol–so who knows! Curious?: https://www.sarahbakerperfumes.com/copy-of-the-perfumes

Greek Keys–its a neo- citrus, calone, seaside florals fragrance, similar to Weekend by Parfums de Nicolai (although a quick check on Fragrantica shows little overlap in the notes, I stand by my loose comparison).

In other fragrance news, I had that supremely satisfying experience of finding something at Marshall’s that not only was an excellent bargain, but has been on my “to buy” list for years–Bronze Goddess whipped body cream for $15 🙂 ! That’s not just free, its an invitation to buy something else.

The Bronze Goddess whipped body cream for $15 was a great bargain. Enjoy it! It us not easy to find good perfumes and related products at Marshall’s anymore. You have to be at the right store at the right moment.

Weekend is more herb-y, minty, off kilter. Strip Weekend of the herbs, mint, and off-kilter, and you have Greek Keys. I think Weekend has a lot more going on–stranger but also prettier.

And on that note – every morning when I turn on the computer and log into NST (which I have trained myself to do BEFORE I check email, as a small nod to the ever elusive work/life balance concept), I experience a moment of appreciation at the thought of all of you out there, spritzing, spraying, dabbing, and sniffing along with me.

I share your perfume community sentiment.

And random PSA that Hautelook is having its YOSH and Ineke sale again–with bottles going for a song.

After reading Elisa’s reviews of Masque Milano perfumed yesterday, I decided to take my new Mandala decant out for a spin today. It’s lovely and pretty much just as she described – pomander vibe at first and then a peaceful incense blend. I am quite apprehensive about trying Times Square on skin after reading multiple reports on it. Maybe tonight though…

At work my team is having our holiday lunch today and gift exchange. I’m looking forward to Irish pub food and the biscotti that my boss makes every year. Tomorrow is ugly sweater day, and I’ll be wearing this one: https://middleofbeyond.com/collections/cardigans/products/gremlins-https://middleofbeyond.com/collections/cardigans/products/gremlins-cardigan

I thought Times Square was good for a laugh at least!! I just wouldn’t wear it in public before trying it out in the privacy of your own home first…

If it helps, I thought it was fun, too (and not at all scary 😉 ) I recently tried the entire line, thanks to a generous NSTer, and didn’t love any of them, but thought Times Square was a good ride and brought some 80s flashbacks (in a good way 😉 ) IIRC, I just sprayed it on the back of one hand.

I occasionally have the urge to try the Opium and Paris flankers. There are a ton, though I’m not sure how easy they are to find. The last time I wore Opium (from a vintage bottle – it may even be the original release?) it was a little overwhelming. A flanker or the current might be a little easier to wear.

    Late to this! Happy Tuesday!

    1) SOTD: Boucheron, with Rose Jam shower gel underneath. Really regal and lovely!

    2) Prepped a bunch of things for the Christmas weekend- lots of luxury food stuff, like caviar and prosciutto de Parma and cheeses in the fridge, sparkling wine too, and fixings for waffles on Christmas morning. Now only two more days of work and I can’t wait!

Oh gosh, very fancy! I havd convinced people to come by the house instead of going out all the time! Weirdly even with the fancy food I am saving money. Whole Foods has prosciutto for $18/pound- you could maybe buy app plate of that at a restaurant! But this feeds 4-5, with bread, cheese olives and cremant!

Snow! Pretty, fluffy snow which should turn to rain this afternoon (just no ice tonight, I hope). In a spritz of Douceur de Siam, as I am doing holiday beauty salon stuff this morning, then holiday drinking this evening.

I tried Noël au Balcon for the second time. Nope, really don’t like it. OTH, literally and figuratively, I sprayed L’Eau d’Ambrée. I don’t know about its staying power yet, but I think it will be welcome in warmer weather.

The very last little dabs from a bottle of vintage L’Origan parfum. (And I do mean vintage – a quarter-ounce bottle, unopened, in its pretty ’20s era box. I’ve loved it to the last drop).

SOTD = Mitsouko EdP, from the sample stash. This is one of the samples which had less in it than I remembered, so it’s a sign that I ought to quit saving it and just enjoy it.

Am in Gourmand Coquin. Perfect for the holidays, or any time of year, as I enjoyed it tremendously this summer as well.

I got an email from ParfuMaria (in the Netherlands) yesterday letting me know they have the bottle I wanted back in stock. I’ve been looking for both Nobile 1942 Patchouli and Ambra in the travel-sized 13 ml bottles but I haven’t been able to find any other stockists than ParfuMaria. When I found them there in October/early November, it was going to cost about $60 for one 13 ml bottle (including shipping) and another $15 or so for the 2nd bottle. Since they were out of the Ambra, I’ve been waiting for it to come back in stock, as $75 for 2 travel bottles seemed reasonable enough.

In the meantime Parfumaria’s shipping prices have shot out the window. Each travel-sized bottle is 20 euros, but when I put it in my cart today and started the checkout process, the total cost was going to be 160 euros. !!!!! (It also appears that the travel bottle price went up from 15 to 20 euros.)

I guess there have been some new laws passed restricting worldwide shipping (?) Have other people found that shipping from Europe to the US has suddenly become prohibitively expensive?

      19 December 2017 at 9:37 pm

To ship to the US, First in Fragrance wants a minimum order of 520 Euros for free shipping, and a minimum order of 400 Euros with shipping costs of 58,74 Euros. They won’t fill an overseas order of less than 400 Euros. I don’t usually buy in such quantities; it might be easier to go In with other people wanting to buy at the same time.

Very late to the party. I had a call with a colleague in Asia and the other one was a no show. I try to schedule my evening calls for the same evening but it doesn’t always work out.

    SOTD = 31 RC (2) and No.19 EDP (8)

Nice combo. 31RC was very prominent despite it being 1/4 the volume. I may wear this combo again.

SOTE = Rising Phoenix Sicilian Vanilla attar. OMG. Smokey benzoic vanilla. Reminds me quite a bit of Aftelier Vanilla Smoke. Sicilian Vanilla attar is heftier (faded denims with scruffy knee-high boots) while Vanilla Smoke is daintier and brighter (embroidered denims with suede ankle boots).

    2 more days …
