Monday scent of the day 12/11

Posted by Robin on 11 December 2017 265 Comments

It's Monday, and International Mountain Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Prada L'Eau Ambrée.

Reminder: 12/15 will be Wild Kingdom Friday...wear a perfume with an animal in its name. If you don't have one, match your perfume to an animal and tell us about it. Suggested by Elisa.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows 2 of the digital collages for the Prada Olfactories, 2015.

Diam Blonde today. It seems wintery to me and I spent the weekend getting the house ready to host the staff Christmas party, so wintery fit.

My neighbor arranges her staff party for the investment banking firm she works at and they get to go to the Ritz. I am school teacher, we are in someone’s house because we are on the other end of the spectrum money wise. But hey, it forces me to get the house clean which is the good side to peer pressure. I put a few Trader Joe’s cedar scented candles out but did not do more as some are very sensitive.

I have always gotten more “Spring” cleaning done right before my Christmas company comes! 🙂

In my humble opinion, income doesn’t matter a whit as far as entertaining. When a home is cozy and comfortable and inviting, THAT is the vibe that matters! That’s my goal anyway!

        1) YUP! I clean so thoroughly for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and just mop and dust the rest of the year.

        2) I have always had people over, broke or not, and it seems when you are all broke, mulled (jug) wine, mushroom/beef stew and homemade biscuits are just as wonderful, if not more so, than smoked salmon and Champagne!

I really wish I could have the fire going it would be lovely but we have spare the air days here whenever it is cool, high pressure systems or something. One year I had the same stack of fire wood for 12 months without using a one because every time I though I would it was not allowed.

I don’t host parties at my place because it is a lot of work. I would rather payfor a reasonable decent meal and not have to worry about clean up before and after.

Believe me they are great about clean up because few of them want to have it at their house. A restaurant type thing does not work for this group.

SotD is Afternoon of a faun, from a sample.
(I forgot about the theme, but hey, a faun is a half goat… 😉

Its been a while since I wore it, almost forgot how amazing it is.
This fragrance does not seem to be available in a smaller bottle (50 ml or less). Why ELdO, why???

I went on a short city break last weekend: visited Reims and Amiens. Both lovely cities, I loved seeing the Art deco architecture in Reims, but when it comes to Gothic architecture, I think I prefer the cathedral of Amiens. We had blue skies and sun on friday and saturday, it was so good to see and feel the sun again!!!
But now we are back to grey and dark skies. Also, snow, and ice and slush (temperatures fluctuate between -1 and 3 degrees celcius, thats just below and above freezing point)

I suspect 30 ml is for the USA/Canada market only.
Because I never saw that size here in Europe in stores, and they do not list it in their EU shop.
(Afternoon of a Faun seems to be only available in 100 ml, on all continents)

What a lovely trip! I actually prefer Reims Cathedral to Amiens. I love those Chagall windows in Reims. The cathedral in Amiens is stunning as well and not just because of its size. If ever you want to visit another great cathedral in the very North of France, Laon has a beautiful one too.

Yeah, those windows are stunning! Have you seen the Chagall windows in Metz?

Good to hear Laon is worth the visit too! I had a good view on that town from the highway (when we drove from Reims to Amiens). I’ll make sure to stop there next time!

I have, I’m slightly cathedral obsessed 😉 Soissons is very pretty too, just saying.
Laon is gorgeous, perched on that rock or whatever it is. It’s bang in the middle of one of WWI front lines.

Oh and I saw those Chagalls in Metz cathedral as well, they are fabulous. I really like the whole city centre of Metz by the way. Those pedestrian areas make for relaxed strolling. And the Centre Pompidou is awesome. Visited it twice now and both times it was really worth it.

Wearing Demeter Mulled Cider for a holiday vibe….This is my favorite Demeter so far! Santa (me) does have some Demeter Eggnog, Gingerbread, and Snow perfumes tucked away for my girls’ stockings, so haven’t sniffed those yet…..

Smelly deal: TJ Maxx and Marshalls have an abundance of Demeter scents right now, for $7.99 each…. 🙂

How are you liking the L’eau Ambree, Robin? I’m always surprised how much I like it when I wear it, though I don’t reach for it much.

Anyone have recs on the best place to buy a 100ml bottle of Jo Malone Pomegrante Noir for an Xmas present? Surprisingly, I can’t find a place to buy it on discount that has a box.

You know there’s an LE bottle this year, opaque black & white stripes? Sold out at JM, don’t know if you can find it anywhere else or not —

I like L’eau Ambree so much and also seldom wear it…..I tend to think of it as a fresh amber, or a light oriental or some light version of my favorite heavier notes, one that can be worn year round. But in the colder months, I crave those heavy notes and in milder weather I want something completely different, until I actually wear poor L’eau Ambree, then I think why don’t I wear this more often?

I was surprised to find that I have enough scents with names that fit this week’s project. I’m starting the week with Siberian Shewolf from Smell Bent. In fact, several of Smell Bent’s fragrances would work, but I’ve pulled two. Siberian Shewolf is a vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood fragrance. For some reason, although I don’t care for most vanilla fragrances I can wear this one.

I’m doing the obvious and wearing Zoologist Macaque. It’s one of the ones I liked the least when I got the sample set and tried them all. Today isn’t changing my opinion. It seems to have a dominant very bitter note I can’t identify (Is that galbanum?), making my nose wrinkle up prepared to sneeze.

Macaque does have galbanum in it. I found there is also a very prominent spiky wood note that irritated me when I tried it. Doesn’t seem as bad when it’s on fabric, though. I only know this because one day when I wore it, it got on the seatbelt in my car, so my car smelled like Macaque for a day or two.

On a related note, inspired by the poll yesterday, I went to my favorite used book store* and picked up some excellent little short story collections from both Egyptian and Brazilian writers. Short stories are all I have the focus for these days but I love them fiercely.

(*Kaboom Books for my Houstonians or curious parties. Their store is like a labyrinth of books and I love it!)

I like Murder by the Book a lot but I don’t read mysteries very often.

Kaboom is in the Heights, on Houston Ave right before it ends at N. Main. It’s worth a trip if you’re in the area. The owners are very nice, and the neighborhood cat Oliver can be found snoozing on the stacks more often than not.

SOTD Blackbird Y06-S, reviewed by Kevin recently.
It is a very, very nice, pleasant, shanky jasmine, which in my case dominates from the start to the end. I wore it the whole weekend and it is so appealing that it keeps me going back to it. I do not get the banana note that much, as I was expecting. There is some metallic aspect in the drydown that makes it more interesting. I see myself wearing it a lot in warmer temperatures, but it is also good in colder days.

Well, I have already scrubbed off my first attempt at fitting in the theme today. I tried Naja for the first time, and on a work day much less, and it was awful on me. Thankfully, I only dabbed it because I was wary after sniffing it in the decant bottle. It smelled like sickly sweet fruity and powdery spearmint on me. The closest perfume I can compare it to is Diptyque Kimonanthe, though that works better on me. To the swap pile the Naja decant goes.

Luckily, I grabbed a sample as I was leaving home because I was already regretting my choice. So now I’m in House of Matriarch Albatross. I smell like salty sea air.

I like linden soliflores a lot, or even better, those blended with mimosa. However, I didn’t get the linden note in Naja due to how it was used or what it was paired with. I also remember Tauer’s Zeta not working on me, though it’s been a long time since I’ve tried it. I think my favorites are Astier de Villatte Grand Chalet and Aftelier Honey Blossom.

I was at Marshall’s this weekend, and found a whole raft of Demeters. Picked up Oud, Frankincense, Myrrh, New Baby and Eggnog. Jackpot!

I haven’t tried Eggnog or NB, been too busy playing the incense. ????

Oh, yeah, I’d reject baby powder, too. I thought New Baby was suposed to smell like infant baby head? Did they nail it? That is a precious scent.

I sniffed some of those today. Demeter Frankincense is quite nice. Kitten Fur does not smell like a kitten’s fur. The Demeter scent has more of a sweetish-musky smell. It felt like a softer version of one of the Narciso scents. I might have bought it for laughs but the only bottle had a busted sprayer. Oh well, saved me $7, lol. 🙂

We are still in Orlando until Wednesday. A bit cooler here the last few days. My hubby and his brother are golfing (again)! My father-in-law and I have been spending a lot of time together going for walks around the resort and going to the gym.

I bought a couple of Goutal fragrances here (Eau d’Hadrian and Ce Soir ou jamais). I sprayed both on today so that is my SOTD so far.

We are off to the pool shortly to save spots for the golfers and enjoy the last few days of sun.

Morning, all. The weather is pretty much perfect here, all cloudless skies and golden sun. It’s perhaps rather too hot, but you get that in summer….the pohutukawa are bathed in crimson and the jacarandas are dark purple in the silver air. This is not my favourite season, but the rest of the country seems happy.

One more week, just four more days. I can do anything for four days. I landed reading the names at graduation again, I’m very late writing the presentation for a conference in London in January, and I have another meeting with That Student, but even with those things on my plate, I’m happy, because just four more days! I think our weather is too hot for my very few animalic scents, so I’m in the cool waters of Ninfeo Mio. It’s pleasantly green and, well, pleasant. Not madly interesting, but very pleasant. I rather wish I’d worn L’Ombre dans L’ Eau now, but maybe tomorrow.

I can hear the dear man saying “No!” with increasing desperation, which suggests he and Alexander are locked in a battle for ownership of his toes. The Beetle has a thing for feet. I had better go and help by distracting Alexander with his puppy toy, which I saw somewhere odd, like the bathroom vanity, I think. Be well, all.

SotD = Carnal Flower, just a few dabs from a sample. Heavenly.

Weather here in the southwest US has been dry, dry, windy, and dry with cold nights and warm-almost-hot afternoons. Lip balm and hand lotion are applied all day long.

The dry air makes perfume more intense and fleeting, as though I am smelling them in fast forward.

Many thanks to the NSTers who have mentioned the Biomains hand & nail treatment. It works great and smells similar to 24 Faubourg, a nice bonus.

Hope all of us will be well, be safe, and be well-scented on this Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day.

I’m south of Los Angeles. We often have warm days in December. The recent combination of quite cool nights, hot afternoons, wind gusts, and super low humidity feels unusual.

I got my exercise this afternoon raking the thick carpet of windblown pine needles off the lawn. I filled a big trash bin to the top. Go, me!

Very hot, dry and dusty here in San Diego, can’t wait for the Santa Ana conditions to break. My whole body feels parched with humidity in the single digits.

I am slathering on creams, oils and my new favourite lip balm, Bite Agave.

Bite Agave looks yummy, couldn’t resist googling it.

The dryness is intense. On Saturday I put moisturizer/sunscreen on my face every two hours. I was outside doing yard work, but even so, that’s dry air.

Really? I wonder if they over sold that scent? Mine has been waiting for me to pick up since the 8th, but between work and post office being closed on the weekend, I had to wait until today to pick it up.

I knew when the note list came out I was probably going to like it. I actually had a chance to test it when I went sniffing with Foxbins in Portland. I wanted it right then, but didn’t want to be too hasty as I hadn’t experienced the dry down. Later that night I kept getting lovely whiffs of it, and when that 20% off appeared, I hopped right on it. I love it. I don’t really have any incense perfumes and this one dries down to a nice soft warm incense. I don’t care much for cold ones, and while I liked some in the CdG incense line, they just didn’t last on me.

I hope you get your bottle soon! Maybe give them a call and see what the hold up is?

    Hey Guys!

    1) We are just two weeks away from Christmas! WHOOP! Although this year no baking- I bought Danish butter cookies in the tin and I actually bought a mini fruit cake for entertaining. So much easier for entertaining with coffee or hot cocoa.

    2) SOTD: TF Venetian Bergamote. I needed something fresher and lighter, even as we have cold, windy weather here in Portland. This is just lovely, soft fragrance with lots of white flowers, citrus and spice, so it’s fresh & light enough YET has a grounding of spice to it. Love this fragrance, not the price tag!

    3) BONUS BONUS BONUS Tom Ford drive by review! Warning: Adult concepts and language

Fckng Fabulous (yes, I spelled it out, apologies, but that is what is on the sample bottle)

    Y’all.
    Y’all:

So like most private labels this lays close to the skin, so when the body is warm and lightly sweating ( from….you know what) the scent rises.

It’s a luscious vanilla with leather and cookies. You’re doing it, doing it RIGHT, with your pretend boyfriend Idris Elba. There half eaten tiramisu that is smashed on the floor, and you did not even bother to remove your boots, you savage.

So basically that’s Fckng Fabulous- a combo of leather and sweet, with a teeny bit of skanky whoopee.

To put this to the test, I wore a deep v cut cashmere sweater (with a push up bra) and leather pants (with Spanx underneath) and slicked back hair with big earrings. High heels of course. Then I applied several drops from the sample bottle, and tried looking sexy with a Manhattan at bar party

Several older ladies complimented me on my bosom, most of the older men scurried away to the safety of their spouses (who also complimented me on my bosom) and three phone numbers I did get turned out to be out of towners. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So there you have it: Fckng Fabulous is a leather with cookies and vanilla. Buy yourself a Chanel Cuir de Russie, and shower beforehand with Philosophy French vanilla and spray a base of Philosophy Fresh Cream before the Cuir de Russie. You will get a similar effect and save about $300.

My thanks to my college friend in NYC who sent this sample to me after buying it for her husband.

[Ed note: sorry, but I’ve disemvoweled the perfume name.]

It’s VERY nice indeed and kinda brilliant: I can’t believe no one has done a leather x gourmand cross before. Or if they have, it is not to my (very incomplete) knowledge. Off to Fragrantica I go!

Having said all that, apparently it looks like Philosophy may have a gourmand x leather/musk of it’s own- Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, being sold at QVC. Stay Tuned!

I’m on the 2nd day of my vacation and I still haven’t made it to the shower yet. While I am taking care of a couple things, I’m in SDV and it’s starting to annoy me for some reason. I ordered some stuff from Amazon and two of the items are supposed to be delivered today and they haven’t even shipped yet and the 3rd thing is out for delivery. I am a little annoyed because I am a Prime member and this is starting to happen more and more. I’m fighting with Sephora about an order I made with a gift card in November and something was sold out and naturally, I don’t have the gift card anymore because I threw it out after I used it. I think that I might do 1270 after my shower and I will give myself a break on doing what I need to do.

Sorry to hear about the hassles. Everything seems to be going slower and slower as Christmas approaches. As for the gift card, twice in the past month I made gift card purchases that had to be shipped to me from Nordstroms and the SA told me to be sure to hang onto the gift card until the item arrived. I guess the store has no way to give credit if the gift card is not in hand. I hope you can get a good resolution.

I’m enjoying my first official day of December vacation. No scent just yet, but had a very nice shower with some of the lovely items from my l’Occitane advent calendar. This is my first time to spring for one of the scented advent calendars, although I have wanted to every year. Somehow I always waited too long and the ones I was considering
sold out. It is so much fun to wake up each morning knowing that a nice little surprise is waiting for me.

It really is fun, and the l’Occitane calendar is one of the less expensive advent calendars (the “Signature” calendar, not the Luxury calendar), and I got it during their Black Friday sale for $52 with free shipping. I like that they are large enough sizes for multiple uses each.

A friend and I are making a little road trip from Sacramento to Anaheim this week, so I am packing and cleaning up so the petsitter doesn’t think I’m a total slob. It’s been a full couple of days–sick kid last night and this morning, then chaos and bombs on the subway (although thankfully no one I know was anywhere near it), and a full day at work! Thank goodness for 24 Faubourg to take me away from all that. But I finished my bottle today–whatever shall I do? 50mL gone, from a scent I wasn’t even sure I liked when I first tried it, but had to buy it because I found the edp on sale for $30 at a rummage sale.

24 Faubourg is beautiful, what a great rummage sale find. Was your bottle EdT or EdP?

I associate that perfume with you so you have to get a replacement!

Nice. Almost wore that today. The ideal day for that one for me is cold and sunny, which was today.

Scentless today (again) due to colds in the family, but dreaming of Chanel 19, Cuir de Russie, No 5 L’eau, 31 Rue Cambon, 28 La Pausa, and now, thanks to Robin, L’eau Ambree. Mostly, it’s been a very Chanel year for me.

    Perfume is such a joy!

SOTD = Chanel number nineteen eau de parfum

Ha! Other than samples of the Zoologist line, I don’t think I have perfumes with animal names. I decided that I will wear No. 19 for as long as I can string together letters from the letter set above.

    Today’s animal is APE.

I’m glad all was safe from the terror attack earlier today. I was busy today (when am I not?!?) and the incident wasted 3 hours of my time with post incident reporting.

Perfect, I look forward to seeing how many animal names you can tease out of there! (And was wondering why you’d written out the 19)
