Tuesday scent of the day 11/21

Posted by Robin on 21 November 2017 207 Comments

Happy World Television Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the very cheerful April Aromatics Agartha.

Reminder: 11/24 will be Hide My Credit Card Friday...in honor of Black Friday / Buy Nothing Day, wear a fragrance (presumably from a sample) that you're itching to buy but don't own yet. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the "small teapot" (16 oz) is $85 at Heath Ceramics. "An iconic Heath piece designed in the 1940s to work with any of our dinnerware lines. Not suitable for use on an open flame or electric stove top. Functional, but also a beautiful piece to display."

    Earth Mother.

Oh how I love television! It’s one of my guilty pleasures. Recently we’ve been watching PBS’ The Durrells of Corfu with our two girls in the evening and it is so good.

        Thanks!
It is a great show, all the characters are really quirky and funny. We actually have an appletv with the pbs app, which lets us watch shows when it works for us.

You do! It’s so good. I grew up watching PBS too, and we still watch it a lot. It’s some of the best television around imo, from Nature to ACL, it’s stuff we can sit down as a family and enjoy.

I love television, too! :D I watched season 1 of the Durrells last year by myself and didn’t love it, then rewatched it recently with my H. It’s so cute and funny! I think I just wasn’t in the mood for it the first time around (I do not recall ever laughing or any comedic moments) though it’s also possible that it’s more fun to watch with others. It was me, though, not the show ;)

World Television Day! I’m running late because I celebrated last night by binge-watching the 3 final episodes of Big Little Lies and went to bed way too late.
Almost Spring-like weather had me reaching for OJ Frangipani, which I also find cheerful and like enough to buy, theoretically. I’ll see how I feel after I empty my nice-sized decant…

    Triple strength coffee
    Extra long workout
    Samples
1 Iris Nazarena woody rooty iris, but the leather basenote contains artemisia which turns MINTy on my skin a la Bandit.
    NO
2 Ambre Dore midway between Amber Absolute and Ambre Sultan. If I didn’t own both I would purchase. Money saved.
3 Baccarat Rouge 540 weirdly smells mostly of Ambroxan ????????????
4 Labdanum 18 today’s scent, starting off similar to MKK, which I own. Obviously will have to see how it develops.

That’s so funny, I loved Baccarat Rouge! It was what I was wearing when I had my wreck in the spring and I remember how comforting I found it when I was in the hospital and kept catching whiffs of it. But maybe it’s just an emotional connection now and not all that great ha!

Oh it’s unchanged. ;) I’m hoping to receive a bottle of it as a gift from my love. I’m too cheap to buy one myself. I do think it’s puzzling for sure but the emotional connection is strong! And I agree, that’s what I love about this hobby too, how differently we experience scents.

    Good morning Y’all….

Well, I’m rocking a serious caffeine withdrawal headache, so I’m also rocking doTerra peppermint essential oil on my forehead. I MUST stop drinking soda! My triglycerides are high, and the gig with soda is up. This is day one drinking bottled water all day. Anyhoo, I smell like a breath mint….LOL.

    Stay healthy y’all! Self-care is so important….that’s the lesson I’m trying to learn…. :)

I used to have quite the Coca Cola habit, partly compounded due to being allowed way too much of it as a kid. I gave up pop about 5 or 6 years ago, and it was one of my best decisions. I switched to water, though it was really hard to manage the cravings at first. It got so much easier over time. The last time I tasted a coke it was obscenely sweet to me.

You can do it! As others have said, coffee and tea can help manage the caffeine part.

I got off soda by switching to LaCroix. I really needed the carbonation and Pellegrino/Perrier wasn’t getting it done. Haven’t had a soda in almost a year. Good luck and feel better.

I’m wearing Tea for Two. This is the second time I’ve worn it. The first time was in the summer when I first got the sample. I didn’t like it, I think because I was expecting a tea scent. Here we are in fall and I really like it. It is tea, but it is chai tea. I don’t need a full bottle, because to me it smells like Tibetan Mountain Temple, which is so much less expensive.

Knize Ten this morning, which to my nose bears a resemblance to Bandit, but I have to say that in neither case does “leather” come to mind in any way, shape, or form.

Nocturnes de Caron EDT – old(er) formula, as far as I remember. Finished my sample. It’s a great sparkling floral aldehydic scent, sunny despite its name.

I’m trying Chanel No. 18 from a decant. It isn’t labeled so I don’t know the concentration. At first I didn’t like it because it was just too sweet and fruity, but after a half an hour it’s now settled down very nicely. It’s still a bit sweet and powdery but quite lovely really.

Today’s mash-up is Oriental Brulant vs. Dries Van Noten.

So far I think OB is winning. Both in a similar vein. Comparing stuff side by side tends to accentuate differences sometimes. DVN smelled a bit uriney at first. :(

As is said, comparison is the thief of joy… ;)

I am so glad see someone else say they got urine from DVN ( I mean, not that I WANT it to smell like urine for you????), because that is exactly what it did on my skin. Gave my decant away after a couple tries.
Is the drydown better for you?

Yes, the urine goes away. DVN has a sweet, buttery smell to me. My daughter is 4 and I’ve sniffed my share of urine enough over the past few years to say that urine can have the same sweet, buttery smell too at times. Although the urine I got initially was sharper…more like cat urine. ;)

I have decants only of both of these. I prefer the OB and would pursue more of that if/when the time comes.

    Sweet tea pot!

In the original Omnia for a torture session at the dentist: extraction and bone grafting. ????

On the upside, after I will have some wonderful coffee and a mini cranberry orange scone that melts in the mouth. No chewing required.

Also, one of my top 5 authors published a novel last year that I was completely unaware of!! It felt weird downloading a kindle book, because this is an author whose works I COLLECTED. That is, before I decided to donate my collection. I like the 3D books in hand when written by my top 5, but times, they are a-changing! Looking forward to delving deeply into it.

Oh goodness! Don’t feel guilty about it! Many times I’ve had to put a book down for days or weeks and then come back to it. Because she writes about such difficult subject matter is just one of the reasons I feel she is so courageous. It’s hard stuff, but then so much in life is, for so many people. I feel in an odd way I should be able to read about if others have had the courage to live through it, if that makes any sense.

Well exactly — I should be able to read about it too — my problems are miniscule compared to most of what is happening in the world. That’s why I feel guilty! When I was younger, I read everything I could get my hands on. Now, when I am stressed about how things are going, I’d rather watch endless reruns of the British Baking Show than watch / read anything that matters.

Still have to switch around my winter wonders to replace my summer loves in perfume. I have been so reluctant this year to embargo my summer scents Not sure why. I think I just want everything to slow down, more than I am warding off the cool seasons.

SOTD is Cristalle, very lightly applied.

    Three questions:

Anyone have suggestions for good deals or rare finds I can ask a relative to bring me from the UK? I can have the perfume shipped to her, etc.

Anyone still hankering to try Aura (Mugler)? I am happy to forward my sample to someone in US.

She has injured her leg somehow, either landed on it wrong or in her cage, and it is very swollen and she can barely walk on it. It seemed better for a while but was worse last night and today so my fiance is taking her to the vet. I am very worried about her. I can’t stand to see her in pain and I love her so. :( I am praying she hasn’t broken it, that it’s just a sprain or something but I am at work worried sick. :'(

Hello, everyone. It’s me, with a working network! ????????????????????????. Yesterday took hours, but it’s done and it seems perfect. Yippee, and other happy noises! The kittens were soooo helpful, especially Alexander, who watched every activity so closely that if anything ever breaks, he will surely be able to fix the problem. Stripey to the rescue. Super Stripey the Fixing Feline….I’m In a stupidly good mood. Clearly, it doesn’t take much to make me happy, just porridge and berries, hot tea, a functional network and….oh dear, yes, I have to confess this: Frapin et Cie 1270. I admit it: I ran completely counter to this week’s project. Sorry? No, actually, not: as I told my father once when I was a little girl, “If I’d been going to be sorry, I wouldn’t have done it.”

So. I met 1270, I loved 1270, I bought 1270, I’m wearing 1270. I think I’d shower in 1270 if that could be arranged. It’s deep and thought-provoking and rich and interesting: booze and fruit and spice, with a random flower here and there. It’s probably going to be excessive for a warm day, but then, I feel excessive today. I’m wearing a dress I think of as vaguely “arty”: lots of fabric gathered in at the hem to make an odd but not displeasing shape, in a moody dark green, accompanied by a linen duster and some shoes that are a strange non-colour between green and bronze. Somehow 1270 fits in with this slightly mad assembly of bits, and I feel great. Not my usual style at all, but I like it.

Eric is squeaking politely for his breakfast. I must go and attend to his inner purr. Be well, all. And Robin, please don’t be too cross that I broke the project. If you could just know how much I like 1270, you would instantly understand and forgive.

First – congratulations on the Internet Wonder! :)
Second – I agree with you on 1270. I liked it when I tried it a couple of years ago. Had I have any store around that carries the line, I would have probably ended up buying it. But it’s a hassle to get a new sample to confirm that I still like it.., So at least for this week money saved.

I am generally no-buy these days, but I got the une nuit nomade samples set, and today am trying Mr. Vetiver, who is dry and spicy, apparently. No need to hide the card (yet, I am in hope/fear of Memory Motel).

I’m wearing many sprays of Safran Troublant this morning before I dive into a day of errands and volunteer work. How is it that I can be more busy after retiring than I was working? It’s a mystery…

It’s a wonderful mystery, though. Hey, I was looking ahead in my diary (I still use a paper diary-journal combined), and on 1 December, I saw a large red ”R”. I had to stop and think why Friday 1 December was to be a red letter day, but of course, it was “Retirement”. Hmmmmm….how things change! Taking everything into account, I ‘m really pleased with my decision, but I’ll take it year-by- year.

Thanksgiving at home (after several years away) means LOTS of cleaning and prep. ????
Later making the drive into the big city to pick up DS from airport. This gives me the chance to stop at Nordy’s and Neiman’s for some sniffing. Yippie!

I’m not hiding my credit card today, but I am pleased at using up a small decant. I’m wearing PG Praline de Santal, which I received in a generous package from kpaint earlier this year. I was in the mood for another cozy perfume after The Red yesterday. It’s raining non stop today and will be for most of the week.

My best friend is flying in tomorrow night to spend Thanksgiving with us, and I’m so excited! Poor thing is flying from DC to Seattle for just a 2.5 day trip.

I’ll be traveling tomorrow to visit my son and his girlfriend in my hometown for a few days. Rather than squash in all kinds of activities and get-togethers with friends, I’m planning to simply enjoy time with them. The holidays can feel stressful and we all want them to be a particular way. I’m just going to go ahead and enjoy my family, and not fret about whether or not I get mashed potatoes or get my own way. I’m very grateful to have the family I have left, grateful for those who have passed that I will always remember, and grateful for the opportunity to have the time to spend with others. It certainly won’t be perfect, nor will I. And that’s just fine.

I’m wearing Rahat Loukoum which I never expected to like but simply do. It makes no sense, much like life. ;) It’s a recent discovery for me since I thought it wouldn’t be for me. I can’t imagine owning another full bottle of anything right now, but I am grateful for having the sample that is gracing my life.

Robin, I forgot to mention yesterday how much I liked the bee photo. That was pretty darn cool.

SOTD = Donna Karan Black Cashmere, original formulation, from the sample stash. I always think of this as one of Waterdragon’s signature scents.

I liked the bee too. Immediately made me think of the Bee Girl from Blind Melon’s No Rain.

“No Rain” was a great video. It has some bittersweet memories for me, though, and I sigh a little every time I watch it.

Back after a weekend with my parents in SF (I avoid traveling on holidays like the plague). Wearing the Tauer « cuddle » scent courtesy of Pixel who bought this on my behalf at the SF Tauer event in April while I was in Canada.

Hooray for Cuddle. It is oddly addictive even if not very original.

Angel Muse in the morning- I remember buying this after standing in a corner waiting for the light to change and wondering what was that lovely smell. Then I realized it was me!

Hitting another $5 movie this evening. I love Tuesdays. It’s right next to the good grocery store, so I will see how crowded it is. Their homemade matzoh ball soup is delicious.

My evil Sephora package is downstairs with the doorman. I did pull the trigger on Twilly, so will send samples to my sister and my niece.

I really should be staying home this evening. I’m a newbie knitter and was many rows into a ribbed cap when I realized it was going to be way too small. I’m now on row 3 after ripping it out… sigh. I have to get this done so I can start in the scarf I’m making my husband for Christmas.

I would like to learn to knit for the sole reason of making T-Rex some funky winter sweaters. She doesn’t have an undercoat and gets cold very easy if she’s not active. I’ve been buying one or two here and there at TJ Max, but they’re very cheaply made (not really expecting much for $14!). The only durable one I have is fleece, a Ruff-wear, which cost the earth even though I got it at discount at Sierra Trading Post.

I haven’t been checking in much lately, as I can only do 1 internet obsession at a time. Early November was spent obsessively looking at makeup; after all my sephora orders arrived I moved on to hair color (I’m now my own colorist, something I’ve got little knowledge of or skill for.) One serendipitous result is that it’s been my lowest $-perfume-purchase month in about a year ;)

That said, I do not plan to participate in hiding any credit cards Friday, and have decided my H can buy me a bottle of Nobile 1942 Patchouli for xmas. It’s reasonably priced but I have a hard time paying full price for anything, including perfume, so when there’s no other option I let my H buy those ones as gifts ;) I may buy it Friday, along with all kinds of other stuff, as well as a bottle of Pour Monsieur for him. (Holiday and birthday shopping has become so much easier since he started wearing perfume!)

I have been breaking out the opulent wintery orientals of late and am today in (vintage) Opium edt. I haven’t worn it in a year and had actually forgotten what it smelled like (I think I’d supplanted the smell of Obsession in place of Opium in my memory but they’re not at all similar beyond genre.) I’d forgotten how creamy it is, and also how sweet. It’s actually knocking me out a bit even though I dabbed judiciously about 6 hours ago. Potent!
