Wednesday scent of the day 10/11

Posted by Robin on 11 October 2017 251 Comments

It's Wednesday, and it's General Pulaski Memorial Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a dab of Calvin Klein Obession, by Jean Guichard.

Reminder: on 10/13, wear a fragrance by Aurélien Guichard or Jean Guichard.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is from the Fall 2017 Calvin Klein 205W39NYC campaign.

My second time trying a Lubin fragrance.

Something about this reminds me of Cristalle, anyone else?
    Pleine Lune tea
    Lipstick queen lippy

I thought it was citrusy and pleasingly retro – but I’ve not tried Cristalle so I don’t know if they are related in that way. My favourites are Idole, Black Jade and Akkad.

I like Korrigan and Epi d’Or . Of the two, Korrigan is probably more of an autumn scent .

Kelly Clache in EdT in the morning
and now I switched to Parfum des Merveilles, which I haven’t worn for maybe 5 yaers =)

It’s still good, but I have to say, I like Eau des Merveilles much better.
I wonder if Kelly Caleche parfum mignt be an improvement over its EdT version?

Is it more leather or more flowers and iris?

The EdP is a tad more leather, but not much. Have not tried the Parfum, sorry!

In Parfumes de Nicolai Week-End in Normandy, just because I was craving badly for it. It is a salty-sweet green perfume delicate and pretty. It has been an absolute love since the first time I sampled it. I wear it especially when I need simple beauty around me.

Ohhh, I’m fasting for a couple of weeks from this sexiest introvert of perfumes to start being able to smell it again.

      I envy you!

Do you wear vintage or new? How long have you been wearing it?
I never smelled vintage and I don’t want to, because I don’t like to cry 🙂 So I’m always happy to hear people say that it still smells like Jacques meant it to smell in 1933)) I’ll even take “almost” =)

The extrait I have is the cube-shaped tester bottle, and I’m not sure how old it is. I also wear (and love) vintage EDT and cologne formulations, and have tried the current EDT formulation (which is very nice, but somewhat pale and wan by comparison to vintage). Most Guerlains don’t sit well on me, but VdN seems made with me in mind. Vintage EDT is relatively easy to find on ebay or etsy, if you decide to risk tears and hunt some down. Or, if you’re in the US, I can send you samples of vintage EDT and/or cologne – give me a holler at scgrether in the land of the geee mayle.

Thank you! May be I’ll overcome my fears someday and order something vintage. But not only I’m not in US, my country has actually made it to the list of “5 Worst Countries To Ship To” So it makes it even more difficult))

Oh dear, now I’m sad too! Your mail mostly misplaced, not able to just order samples of things on a whim … makes me wish I knew someone who travels there who could mule things to you. 🙁

Yes, I completely understand the “made with you in mind” part.

No worries, it’s a transliteration anyway, since my native alphabet is not latin. And nickname with a “c” was already taken when I registered.

I’m not in US. I’m in Russia. 90% of our post gets lost or damaged:)

So I will never agree to waste vintage perfume that way anyway.

The coolest description of Parfum des Merveilles I’ve heard was:
a lacquered pianoforte recently polished with a lemon scented wax.

I loved polishing furniture when I was a child. It was the only chore I loved doing at home. And we had this nicely scented french wax… Parfum des Merveilles base notes bring back those memories.

And it’s opening notes are reminiscent of my mom’s silk scarf she wore under her hat in winter months.

Woke up 10 minutes before my daughters bus was due to pick her up. We were both running around like crazy. I hope she ends up being able to have a good day. It’s cold and rainy here, the perfect weather for sleeping in. I’m off to work wearing Cuir Impertinent, lots of cherry tobacco at top, with a soft leather drydown. Have a good day everyone!

I’m so interested in this one and I really want to try it. Haven’t ordered it yet. But I’d like to hear more of your description.

Is it strong like a men’s evening fragrance? Is it an oriental or something else? Why didn’t you like it at first? What colors come to mind while it develops? Are there any disturbing notes like sour fruits or paws unwashed? =)

I wish I were better at describing perfumes but I’ll try. This is fabulous and there are no sour notes or dirty paws. It’s quite a complex combination, with some very tangy fruity notes up front, like lemon, a bit tingly. There is a bit of spice and a strong green herbal note which I think is the tarragon that is listed. And there is something ambery or resinous. I simply do not get anything stinky, musky, or skanky here, but I guess some do. I did order the small spray bottle of it right away since I liked this best from the sample set. It is a unique fragrance and I hope you get to try it sometime. As well as Bat, which is the next one I plan to buy. I have lavished myself with a lot of sprays of Civet and gotten no complaints.

SOTD is two generous blasts of PdE Corsica Furiosa because it’s supposed to be eighty-flippin’-seven degrees today. Stick a fork in me, I’m DONE!

On a positive note, I’m hitting the road in the AM for cooler climes, better views, a bit of serenity and solitude, and quality T-Tex time. She had a last visit to the dog park this morning to say hello and goodby to her friends and to run her little tushie off. Proud of how polite and mannerly she was with all the dogs, big and small, and played according to their temperment. She’s wonderful with timid dogs, but when it comes to playing rough with bigger dogs, she gets carried away and has to have a time out. The van is mostly packed, and finishing up a few errands today. Goodbye South Carolina, state of washboard roads, vicious biting ants, neon sunsets, and undulating hills of green.

Happy Humpday to all. And thank you for the Pulaski info! Now I know how Pulaski Road in Chicago got its name. Also, if you missed it yesterday, freebies are all mailed and en route. Cheers!

You are smelling good! I am in the “cheaper” version of herbally tomato leaf and greens with eau de campagne…I think it was you who recommended that I try this one when I was on my tomato leaf hunt and it is ltsg who gifted me the bottle….and because I have an FB i have been spraying lavishly all day long (it doesn’t last long on my scent eating skin)….when I turned the bottle upside down today (which gives a more accurate indication of how much is left) I came to see that I am halfway done with it!!!

It’s my favorite Lutens – the softest and most wearable of the bunch, IMHO. It’s got none of that intensely spiced, stewed fruit (which I do like occasionally, and which I used to like much more back in the early days of my obsession), but instead comes out of the bottle well balanced, lightly spiced, not too heavy, really interesting and lovely. So glad you like it, and not sorry for the enabling…. 🙂

…Just looked it up. $310 for 75 mL. Oof. For something like that, I’d definitely want to buy it in real life. You know–to get the cute little bag, to have a pleasant (one hopes) interaction with the SAs, and to get a handful of fun samples.

I slept in this morning as well and dashed out without perfume. I found a sample of Beige in my purse, so I am smelling elegant even though it is “Spirit Wear Wednesday” and I am wearing a bright yellow school t-shirt and jeans.

I have some of each. The EDP is missing that spritely, cheering citrus of the EDT, but its drydown is a beautiful lightweight version of 31 RC, IMO. It does last a tiny bit longer on me than the EDT.

I’m sitting in Epic Woman right now and I am debating on if I should wear Obsession today (after my Shower) or when I get off work on Friday. The littlest bit of Obsession goes a long way. My bottle of Obsession is almost 20 years old. If I don’t wear Obsession today, I will probably go for Theorema today.

SOTD is Cuir de Lancome, which I may regret later since we’re at 79F now and expecting to get warmer by the afternoon. WHERE IS MY FALL WEATHER???

The haircut and new color turned out very nice, and The CEO actually commented that he liked the cut better than any other way I’ve worn my hair in the past several years. (He’ll have to come around to the color. I’ve been doing it blonder than it is since Taz was born, and I’m tired of that.)

They are nicely done. I didn’t try the gardenia (I think that’s the one called Olivine?). And they are sweet, though the jasmine one (She Belongs There) isn’t too sweet for me. Though none are sickly sweet- I just have a low tolerance for sweet.

Just spritzed on some Lostmarch Lann Ael for comfort. I smell like a bowl of Apple Jacks! I’ve had back issues for a long time but feeling OK lately. Of course, you stop doing your PT exercises and then one day, wham! Back again, laying on my back with an ice pack 🙁
It’s my own fault probably – we’ll see what the physical therapist says today. Really bummed since I have a concert to go to tomorrow and not sure if I’ll be able to make it.

I checked the list and I actually had one Guichard – Heidi Klum Shine that someone had given me as a freebie with a swap long ago. I never smelled it, so finally just did. Nothing special, but not terrible. Just not for me, at least not today.

Of course the house could be fine even if it is inside the perimeter. Their daughter tracked down a journalist who said they’d been on their street yesterday, and there was no damage then. I was thinking iris but didn’t want anything melancholy or wistful as iris can read to me. The weather here in the DC area is very overcast and humid but that’s being dissipated by a strong breeze. I often notice the shifts in the noises from wildlife, and the crickets are still active 24/7 here. It feels odd so late in the year and I couldn’t figure out what perfume would fit this weather and the sounds of crickets, a few birds and the swaying of the trees. Then it came to me: Prada’s Purple Rain which somehow manages to have a bright lift to it which may be from the aldehydes. Lucas did a lovely review of it:

    https://chemistinthebottle.wordpress.com/2016/05/18/prada-purple-rain/

Also, I was thinking that VC&A’s Bois d’Iris would fit the bill, *but I don’t have that* because when I ordered my decant I chose TDC’s by mistake. Anyone else ever make a similar dumb*ss blunder?

Morning, all. I feel like wearing bling today, and I’m trying to find a bling-ful perfume to match. Actually, my idea of being “blinged out” isn’t very extreme. I’m not in body-hugging lurex or anything. There’s enough suffering in the world without my adding that particular affliction. However, my little jeans jacket is a pale wash denim with mis-matched “jewel” buttons, here a blue sparkly daisy one, there an “emerald” one surrounded by “diamonds”, and then a random, but pleasing pale yellow. Is that meant to be citrine? It’s all a heap of fun, but I don’t think I own a similarly light-hearted perfume….but yes! What about Vanille Galante? It seems to sparkle and dance. Yes, that will do nicely.

In kitten news, I have now trained the purrs to recognise the words “water pistol”. I only have to speak the awful name and they cease and desist all wickedness and assume expressions of extreme innocence. If I actually fetch the dread device, they scatter to three winds, and for, oh, fully 30 seconds at least, you’d not believe there was a kitten in the house.

So, I must pootle work-wards. What an easy day I have ahead. An easy diary, Vanilke Galante, and blinged-up buttons. What could be better? Be well, all.

Ha! Love the way you’ve trained the kits.

My sister’s and I used to scatter like that when we’d hear our mom mutter at us from the kitchen and then we’d hear the front door open and and slam shut. Meant one thing. She was heading to the willow tree to get a switch and threaten our ankles with it. Worked like a charm. Out the backdoor we went, up through the field behind the house. She probably never even stepped outside…

For this week’s project, I have Lou Lou and Baghari, but don’t feel like wearing either of them, so I may not participate in Friday’s project. Today I’m wearing African Leather. At the Portland Sniffa I discovered that The Perfume House carries Memo! So glad. They also carry George F. Trumper, and I sniffed the Sandalwood one. It’s really good and reasonably priced, too. I’m always on the lookout for a good sandalwood.

Sensuous Nude today. No reason, other than I spied the bottle sitting in the cabinet and thought, “been awhile…what’s that like?” It’s nice, pleasant, warm. Happy to snuffle my arm.

Speaking of warm…really getting sick of this warm weather. I want crisp, I want leaves, I want Fall! I want to get my hair trimmed shorter, which I refuse to do until I’m assured the heat is done!

On the movie front, I took advantage of the $5 Tuesday deals going on to see Blade Runner 2049 yesterday. It’s very good. Affecting, absorbing and seemed shorter than its long running time. (Love those recliner seats). Gentleman next to me said, “wow” when it was over. Interesting that pretty much every preview was high action movie…Geostorm, Pacific Rim 2 for example. BR isn’t an action movie by any means.

I can’t wait to see Geostorm. I just love utterly stupid over the top disaster movies. My current favorites are 2012 (every disaster! all at once!) and The Day After Tomorrow (troposphere!!!)

Yes, they are highly entertaining. My foreign, independent film-loving husband doesn’t get it.

I love DAT. I snort and laugh all the way through. My favorite bit is when they collect all the books to burn for warmth, ignoring and bypassing all the wooden chairs and tables.

        Armageddon rocks.

I hadn’t gone out to see a movie in almost 15 years until I discovered that one of our local theaters has recliner seats. (The reason I stopped altogether was due to the extreme discomfort of sitting in those cramped Greyhound-bus torture devices with no legroom.) It is a totally different experience now. I bring a blanket and cuddle up! I also very much appreciate the big arms, all my own, with cupholders (!) And not being crowded in by people on either side.

*My husband assures me that even theaters without full recliners have seats that are just as comfortable but I’ve thus far refused to go anywhere else than the recliner place.

Anyway, I’m excited to see the new BR even though I have never been much of a fan of the original.

We are going to see the sequel very soon, maybe tomorrow. I like that movie theaters now sell wine and let you take it inside!

I think if you happen to be in Sephora, it’s worth a try. I like the lavender in it, and I’m not always a fan of that note. I prefer it over the Amethyst by a little, but disappointed in the rollerball. I do have a sample spray, going to try that to see if spraying helps the longevity (then again, I was hot and sweaty all morning so that surely didn’t help!)

When I first fried Eau des Merveilles at a Sephora, I sprayed it alongside Elixir. I didn’t much care for Elixir (it had too much of something that put me off…patchouli, maybe?). I didn’t find it to be any more orangey than the original, but maybe that’s just me.

I do want to try the amber flanker next time I’m at Sephora.

Yuck. Fires. Air is horrible here. I don’t have any work this week, which would usually lead to outdoor chores. Not today. A dark yellowish haze is all over everything and the air smells terrible. Just to be clear, I am 50, well now closer to 40, miles south of the dozens of fires burning north of here.

We have an exchange student arriving on Monday from South Africa, and he has asthma. I’ve emailed his mother about the air quality, but I don’t want to be too alarmist on the good chance that it will improve next week.

So scent of the day is smoke, bad smoke, with a hint of vintage My Sin on my wrists. I inherited this sample from someone and I love it.

Hello, all, and a pleasant afternoon to those in nearby time zones. I accidentally woke up 45 min late, which, with traffic, meant I arrived at work an hour later than expected. And of course I’m more exhausted than I usually am, even with those 45 min extra sleep.

I put on some CDG Vettiveru from the swapmeet this morning, and now, 4.5 h later, only the faintest suggestion of it remains. It’s been this way for the past two hours. I should just bring this decant with me when I wear it. It’s so wonderful, but so short-lived. It’s as though someone took Sycomore and skimmed off the top, discarding all the depth. I have some back-up samples with me, but none of them are vetiver-y. Sigh.

    SOTD is Aramis “Calligraphy Rose”.

    Top: oregano, saffron and honeysuckle;
    Mid: rose, myrrh, styrax and lavender;
Base: labdanum, musk, ambergris and olibanum.

I like the rose-saffron (extra marks for no oud), but there’s a hint of soapiness and then it just doesn’t last very long. I wonder if it’s the lavender reading as soap? I had a similar problem with the Majda Bekkali I tried last week, and it also featured lavender. I have some lavender-fronted perfumes that don’t seem soapy, but maybe it just doesn’t work for me as a background note.

I won’t bore y’all with the dreariness of work life right now, but there’s a growing risk that TOMK will divorce me citing Microsoft Excel as the co-respondent. :^D

Smackdown Day #1 – Battle of the Cherry Bombs. Brought to you by…The Perfume Angel–an NSTer who is beyond kind and generous!!

On the left arm…it’s sleek, it’s black, it’s the bottle made of your naughtiest dreams…it’s BLAAACCKKKK PERFECTOOOOOO!!!

On the right arm…it’s in your face, it’s tacky-cool, it packs a punch…it’s MANCERA WIIIIIIILD CHERRYYYYYYYY!!!

They both start out with a medicinal cherry kick. Black Perfecto settles down more quickly into a fluffy cloud of cherries, almonds, and musk. I get a wee bit of the suede, but I really don’t consider this a leather scent (for reference, my faves are Cuir de Russie, Cuir de Lancome, and Cuir d’Ange). The Wild Cherry has a more dense and syrupy character and definitely lasts a lot longer. After about 3 hours, the Black Perfecto is more of a fruity musk (I do get the idea of raspberry macaron, as Monsieur Guerlain has described, and I’m also reminded of LL L’eau en Blanc) whereas the Wild Cherry is still all about the cherries and some patch to ground it.

Right now, my opinion is that Wild Cherry is the real Ch-ch-ch-ch-Cherry bomb of the two. I envision Black Perfecto as a pretty girl in a frilly dress and leather moto-jacket, and Wild Cherry as a dominatrix in the perfect red lipstick. Black Perfecto seems more all-situations friendly, and Wild Cherry is more of an “I’m going out tonight and plan to get into some trouble” type scent. I plan to wear the Black Perfecto on its own to get a real “feel” for it, that might change my mind about things. I do have enough Wild Cherry to last 3 lifetimes (4 oz bottle, really!?!) and don’t think I need Black Perfecto, as drop-dead gorgeous as that black bottle may be. While not quite as lust-worthy, the Wild Cherry bottle is also pretty cool with its animal print and screw-top lid.

    SOTD = Carner Barcelona D600

Iris, vetiver and nutty, what’s not to love?

    Commuting Woes No. 398:
    – Two women boarded the train at a stop where there’s a -50% chance of getting a seat (I know that’s impossible – I just want to make the point that even Standing Room only seats are at a premium). Visually, they look older than Yoda. Would you believe that someone had to shame two able-bodied construction workers to give up the seats marked for disbled passengers. Seriously?
    – Woman with messy up-do hair extensions so fake they look like curtain tassles: not only did she carry AND use a blankie to lay her head against the side of a pole next to her seat, she also had an attitude bigger than her ego. Check your attitude at the door, ok? And please, you are not 3 years old – for goodness’ sake, leave the blankie home!

Just in case you look in here: is 398 a real number (I mean, do you have a rolling sum somewhere), or was it just a figure of speech?

As somebody who spent almost 3 decades of her life knowing only public transportation (and not the German type 😉 ), I sympathize a lot.

Well, I started randomly counting from No. 374 and just a little over 3 months later, I have written 25 of these. Annualizing the 25 gets us 100. I could probably easily come up with 100 per year of working. Since I have been working for quite a while (longer than some commenters have been on this earth), if I were to write a book on just these commuting stories (hello CM8), I will have enough material for a tome!

If you publish it, I’ll buy it 🙂

Ha…this was my question too. I am intrigued now by the idea of taking a blankie on public transport.

It could be worse — she could have had a therapy dog or cat or whatever is allowed as a therapy animal!
