Monday scent of the day 10/9

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2017 269 Comments

John Lennon

Happy Monday! It's also John Lennon's birthday, and Fire Prevention Week. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a little dab of Bond no. 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory, by Aurélien Guichard. It was a great scent, but my decant is in less than perfect condition, and the fragrance has since been renamed and probably reformulated.

Reminder: on 10/13, wear a fragrance by Aurélien Guichard or Jean Guichard.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Traversee du Bosphore today.
I also haven’t managed to report on my perfume evening last Thursday yet so…
It went really well. It was a small but enthusiastic bunch who really got into smelling everything I offered them. I started off by addressing a few perfume FAQs, then got everyone sniffing! I roughly grouped stuff by prominent note and once finished let everyone loose to resniff, take samples or douse themselves in anything that took their fancy. It was a great evening. I’ve uploaded a few images (and yes, that’s me up front) to my gravatar profile so if you’re interested, just click on my name above!

Sounds like a great evening Bob! I think I’ll plan one of these for the ladies in my family.
Trying out- Atilier Cafe Tuberose. Gourmand- dark chocolate powder& roses and Tuberose to me.
Weird compelling beginning and yummy drydown- almost like Ambre de Mervilles
Still 80s here. Happy almost fall y’all!

You should definitely do it. Once I’d laid everything out on the table it struck me how beautiful it all looked unpackaged! I never really get to see my collection like that.

Nice pictures, looks like a fun event! Loved the sign that said, “… that’s a lot of perfume, won’t it go off?”

I personally don’t worry about stuff going off. If it does, I toss it and move on. There’s more where that came from. I am making a concerted effort though to wear the rare and discontinued ones, so I have no regrets when/if it turns.

Luckily I haven’t had anything go off yet, and some of them I’ve had for nigh on ten years. But obviously most are in their boxes in their dedicated ‘fumedrobe’!

In Dame Gardenia from the swapmeet (thanks Lovetosmellgood). Very nice soliflore. I see myself wearing it very often in spring-summer time.

I will have a quiet day today at home. I just finished reading all the lazy weekend poll comments and drinking my first cup of coffee. My foot is in pain from all the movement during the weekend, so I will take it easy today to be ready to go back to work tomorrow. Warm, muggy and rainy day here thanks to Nate. I am not complaining about the temperature, but wish the humidity was not so high.
    Have a nice Monday everyone!

I sprained my ankle and had a minor fracture in my little toe two weeks ago. I fell when I was rushing to get the train to work. Waiting a couple of more weeks to get healed.

I have not tried Honeysuckle yet, but I am pretty sure it is as good as the rest of the soliflores.

    Happy Monday!
I’m kicking off this week by wearing Gabriella Chieffo Quasicielo. The name means ‘almost heaven’ and the perfume itself is an interesting, a little bit weird blend. Despire being strange its hard to stop sniffing. It’s first perfume Gabriella did on her own without Luca Maffei, you can sense it’s not perfect, that it has edges. But that’s what makes it more interesting.

Off to search for a farewell gift for a co-worker from the desk next to mine who decided to change jobs. He’s a tea drinker like me, so it should be easy ;)

Oh no! I do hope it’s just a temporary thing with your nose. My nose went all wonky last night – everything I sniffed for bedtime smelled sharp and unpleasant, but this morning all was back to normal. I think it was the brussels sprouts we had for dinner – strong cooking odors can really mess with one’s sense of smell!

Looks like I have a couple of Auréliens: Piguet Casbah and Narciso Rodriguez for her L’Absolu. Jean wasn’t as prolific.

But since it’s Thanksgiving and we’re having apple pie, I am going to wear Ambre Narguilé, which will blend in with the food smells.

Monday. Ugh. Going to pick myself up with something that makes me feel bright and optimistic, though I haven’t yet decided what that’s going to be. I’ve been thinking about relocating my perfume stash to a place that is more convenient and usable (all my bottles are currently stored in a cabinet that is dark and deep, which is good, but makes for difficult retrieval).

Has anybody here used a media cabinet for perfume storage? My thought is that it is shallow, tall, and has lots of shelves, and so could be a good option.

I don’t have a prolific collection, but I keep mine in my dresser (I hang up 90% of my clothes) I tuck the top flaps in, and I like being able to see them and reach for them vertically.

I do that with my samples, but I want to be able to see the fronts of the bottles, and many of them are just a little too tall to fit in my dresser drawer. I’m envisioning a morning “throwing back” of the cabinet doors, and having almost all of the collection visible, while I contemplate the vision with a nice balance of humble gratitude and wicked glee.

Eau de Campagne (thanks to ltsg!)

On this hot and sticky October day I sprayed lavishly and WOW is all I can say……as a pre-teen I wore Cristalle and O de Lancolme …in the 1970s those fragrances were chock full of oakmoss…..eau de Campagne reminds me very much of those two vintage beauties, as it is also a perfume of the 70s with similar notes (including the oakmoss)….I will definitely be spending more time with it in the near future ….

and last night I sampled Byredo Reine de Nuit Extrait….gorgeous stuff…but completely out of my price range…grateful that I got to try it though :)

and I have a sneaking suspicion that when my mother gets her nose on this one she is going to “beg” me to allow her to “borrow” it….I might just have to decant and split the bottle with her…there is something about it that also brings to mind 4711, eau D”Hadrien and eau de Sud…. (all three were HUGE favorites of hers)

Cristalle is great in all weather…honestly, when I wore it in the 1970s and 1980s it was usually in the winter.

Same here……I just had seven bottles in my rotation which I wore year round…now everything is seasonal …although I do like to mix things up a bit from time to time and wear “winter” scents in the summer and vice versa…

I think the food comes from what the stores offer us as “limited edition”….which right now seems to be all about the pumpkin :)

and look at what I just found-

      http://www.smallflower.com/berdoues/amande–tonka-1902-eau-de-toilette-3.38floz-fragrance-10079395

I think there are five of them and the are EDTs…this one, the ivy and the rhubarb sound really good…and for 40 dollars, well, that is free!

I have Undina to thank for this as she just posted reviews on the original Grand Cru Collection which made me head to smallflower which made me discover these….

I found four Guichards in my collection, of which I’m willing to wear three, or possibly two. I like Anisia Bella and Gucci Guilty, but I’m not sure of Angel Sunessence or Jean’s LouLou. This week though, I am finishing out my Atelier Discovery Set, and my SOTD is Trefle Pur. Only Vetiver Fatale to go. I am not willing to wear Vanilla Insensee, because vanilla – yuch!

I too am generally a vanilla hater, but I *almost* liked Vanilla Insensee – it had a nice dry quality. The only other vanilla I can stand is Diptyque’s Eau Duelle, for reference.

I think you don’t have to be a vanilla lover to give Vanille Incensee a try. I agree with nicolasix about the dry quality to it. It reminds me of a great cedarwood and vanilla candle I had once. It’s a bit cream soda like to me.

Morning, NST. I’ve been MIA for a few days, just being busy indoors, feeling a bit off colour and generally down pin. I find that small not-quite-sicknesses tend to hang about being tedious and inconvenient, whereas more dramatic illnesses arrive in a rush and depart equally rapidly, probably because I do something sensible like taking a pill and going to bed. Anyway, I drifted through the days doing basic stuff and waiting drearily to feel better, but even writing a few quick lines for NST seemed too much. I have kept wearing perfume, though, so I can’t be too bad. Sleepless again, but that’s habitual, sadly.

The kittens and I are sitting in the pre-dawn shadows, watching the city sleeping. They’re digesting a little treat (I gave them a tin of sardines) and washing one another’s faces with minute attention to detail; I’m drinking tea and wearing a soft cloud of Narciso, which is just right for my current activities. I saw Lucasai’s newly-coined word “cuddlefluff” the other day, and that fits Narciso perfectly. It has no structure, but that’s OK, it doesn’t need to be anything other than itself. It’s just a warm waft of pretty pastels. If smells have colours (and they often do, for me) it’s blush pink, dove grey, with a tiny edge of powder blue and some streaks of winter white. Gorgeous for wrapping up in, like a cashmere and silk scarf. I won’t wear it to work, though. It feels a bit too intimate now I’ve worn it like this.

Titus is washing Eric’s ears now, and every so often having an over-vigorous chew. Eric is quite rightly objecting. I think I’ll leave them to sort out their differences and see if I can find some sleep. Be well, all.

Trying to pretend that summer isn’t actually over, so today’s scent is Goutal’s Eau D’Hadrien, vintage edp (circa 1997 or so). The vintage edp has aged much better – it’s in pristine condition – than the edt from around the same time. I wonder why that might be.

Citrus essential oils and top notes (which are usually citrus) decompose much quicker with time..this is why vintage Cristalle does not smell nearly as good as pristine Cristalle did when it first came out in the 1970s…wonder if the EDP is younger? or perhaps less of citrus notes?

I finished off my Chinatown sample, which is an Aurelian creation. I have one more of his and one of Jean’s that I’ll wear Thursday and Friday. Boy, Chinatown is the definition of a fruitchouli. This isn’t a office friendly perfume, but we’re having our annual all-staff meeting offsite. In the morning, we’re doing community service and in the afternoon the annual staff awards in a rented movie theater followed by a showing of the new Blade Runner. It should be a fun day!

      *an office friendly perfume

It was a fun day! They ended up saying that staying for the movie is optional, so I decided to wait and watch it with my bf on Friday when we both have the day off. I had a pair of jeans to return to Nordstrom Rack nearby before contending with Seattle traffic. I ended up finding a better pair jeans and a clearance pair of Nikes at additional 25% off. I love bargain shopping!

Chinatown has held up well, and I’ve enjoyed wearing it.

So Aurelien did all the Piguet reorchestrations? (Well, not Fracas, OBVS, but still. The line is pretty big.) I have samples of several of those; Calypso might be my favorite of the re-dos. My Fracas is a very vintage mini, maybe 1960s?, and although the topnotes are nail-polishy, the rest of it is absolutely narcotic.

Saw my cousin and his wife at the HS football game on Friday, and she smelled so nice I had to ask what she was wearing. It was very much a white floral effect on her, and I was expecting her to say it was ELPC Tuberose Gardenia… but no. DKNY Be Delicious. Which TOTALLY does not smell like that on me, isn’t that interesting?

SOTD is beautiful Le Temps d’une Fete.

Haha, there’s a Penhaligon’s store right next to the Apple store that’s most convenient for us. My boyfriend went to the latter to return a phone, and I asked him via text to pick me up a Savoy Steam sample :) This makes me smile because I want to know if the SA could tell that he was there with strict instructions from someone else. He’s pretty clueless when it comes to perfumes, and doesn’t like them, so I’m imagining him looking down at his phone with a confused expression on his face.

I woke up at 3 AM certain that a neighbor’s house must be on fire. I went outside and did a perimeter check and went up and down the street, but could see nothing out of the ordinary except for the very strong scent of burning wood, tar, and plastic. We are 50 miles south of the fires, so the wind must have been very strong.

Laurie Erickson’s Sonoma Scent Studio is in Healdsburg, which I believe is out of the range of the fires right now–but everyone is paying close attention to shifts in wind.

I went through that in 1999 here in Florida, Oakland Fresca. Woke up in the middle of the night convinced the neighborhood was burning. It wasn’t, but the smoke from fires 20 miles north was so intense that it seemed like it. We kept our car packed and ready to go for a week. :(

Hoping these fires can be controlled quickly, and saying a prayer for the firefighters who work on them. If anyone hears from Laurie Erickson, I hope they’ll let us know. She’s one of the first people I thought of when I heard about these fires.

OMG, I hope her studio is safe. I was thinking about all of the vineyards that are being destroyed – and the huge price increases we’ll be seeing soon. I hope they’re able to get the fires under control. It’s terrifying – and in an area just full of national treasures.

We could smell the smoke from the fire and we’re all the way down in Pacifica CA. It didn’t lighten up until 1 today.
I hope Laurie’s studio is ok, there’s also an African wildlife refuge called Safari West in the area. Hoping all are going to be ok.

8 glorious spritzes. My first bottle will be a empty at some piunt this year. I had already unwrapped my 2nd bottle to make decants because I want to wear the kast drop of my first bottle.

I am wearing No.19 for spine strengthening. It’s all good. I have a meeting later with someone who’s gettung promoted into a position repirting directly to the CEO so it’s huge (or “YUGE” if I bring out my Jersey accent).

We are so sick of HOT weather here in Houston, forecast to be up to 93 today! I am tired of my lightweight clothes and want to get into a cute sweater for a change. Oh well.

For Friday I will try–I have both Silver Factory and Chinatown from quite long back–but both bottles have become impossible to spray from. Those are the only two Bonds I own–I wonder if any other people have had this problem? I’m going to try banging them around and running hot water on them to see if anything will work.

SOTD is Tauer Amber Flush body oil, a tiny spritz of which was used to attempt to de-frizz my hair. Not very successful, but no matter, I keep getting whiffs of coziness.

Freebie Friends, I went to mail packages today, forgetting the post office is closed. Unable to self mail because the dang box was full and no room for additional packages-Grrr! Will get them out tomorrow, for sure!

The weekend drama continued! I actually had to ask the supervisor and my agency to intervene in a very ugly situation, which has now been resolved to my satisfaction. So, while there are many pros to working as I do, there are also a few big cons. The biggest pro is that I am now officially done at that location, and will happily start my journey Westward, HO! ????

How is Amber Flush? I may gift myself a bottle for my birthday next month. I’m just a little afraid that if it’s too much like Amber Flash (with an A), I’ll find it too boozy. Twice I wore Amber Flash around my bf and both times he asked me what smelled like beer. He was not wrong.

I find it pretty hefty in that it’s quite pronounced and has great throw, even using just a bit. I don’t think the oil is boozy at all- more warm and fuzzy, but I have never smelled Amber Flash. If used as intended (as a body oil) it leaves a great sheen to the skin but isn’t greasy. I’m halfway through my second bottle.????

Testing Chanel Gabrielle again. I sprayed some on my inside wrists and an hour or two in, got this gorgeous rose coming from it, which I’d missed last time I tried it. I sprayed the rest on the tops of my wrists. I wouldn’t mind having a bit of this around, actually. Bummer that they’re not doing a 30 ml bottle.

My initial response to this was that it does not smell like something designed for the youth market. That impression remains. But kudos to the kids if they want to wear it, I guess?

SOTD has been Clive Christian “C for Men”.

    Top: mandarin, saffron, thyme and elemi;
    Mid: jasmins, rose, orris, lotus, mate and labdanum;
Base: amber, tonka, oud, cedar, guaiac wood, leather, oakmoss, musk, tobacco, olibanum, styrax and vanilla.

Good stuff, but way too expensive to ever do more than dabble with a decant like I’m doing today.

Tried Diptyque “Volutes” at the weekend.

    Top: iris flower, honey, tobacco and dried fruits;
    Mid: pink pepper, black pepper, saffron, hay and immortelle;
Base: opoponax, myrhh, styrax and benzoin.

On my skin it didn’t smell of any of that, more like a dull vetiver, and I didn’t care for it. If anyone in the UK wants the remaining 2ml of a 4ml decant let me know at gbeggan atte yahoo dotte com.

Switched to Nobile 1942 “Rudis” – now that was more like it. But although we’re firmly into Autumn – no Indian Summer here – it will be even better in a month’s time. Sunday was Arquiste “Nanban”, one of my great favourites and again just about cool enough for it.

Hope your week has started off well, too! Will you wear No22 tonight???

Ha, funny you should ask! I’m still debating, since it apparently didn’t work the last two games. I went with the 31RC precisely because I thought I should try to change up the luck. But then again, maybe the N°22 was good luck for *home* games, like tonight?!? Baseball superstitions: they’re only crazy if they don’t work. ????

Little late to the party today. Spent part of my day shopping for a new monitor for my work computer because the old one was starting to fritz out on me.

I’m wearing spicy goodness in the form of SL Vitriol d’Oeillet.

Posting super late today due to Pixel kitty having a vet appt this afternoon to get her stitches out. So far, looking OK, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

She had a bit of a mishap Last Friday afternoon that resulted in the cloth e-collar being quickly cut off with a pair of scissors. So she went back to the Emergency vet to be fitted with a plastic e-collar that was much smaller. Pixel kitty was also medically boarded there over the weekend.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 Poudre, from the sample stash. The perfect scent for a wet and muggy day.

You smell lovely! Also sending hugs to both you and Pixel kitty for a smooth recovery.
