Tuesday scent of the day 10/3

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2017 237 Comments

Versace Medusa teapot

It's Tuesday. RIP Tom Petty. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate over Aftelier Ancient Resins Body Oil — nice, and hat tip to Elisa P for the layering idea.

Reminder: on 10/6, wear a fragrance with lily, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Versace La Medusa teapot by Rosenthal is $685 at Amara.

Wearing Hepcat to honor Tom Petty…RIP to one of the most prolific and talented songwriters/rock musicians of our time…his music is still relevant after over 40 years in the field…I am sad that I never actually got to see him perform live…my co-worker saw him at Mountain Jam recently and said he was an incredible performer….she is more than half my age, which speaks to how his music transcends time and age….a man from humble Southern beginnings…who embodied the American dream…..

The ending guitar riff on “American Girl” is extraordinary-

The sitar in “Don’t Come Around Here No More” is sublime (and for those of you who were around at the onset of MTV as I was will appreciate this)-

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0JvF9vpqx8

    very inspirational-

We were watching Tom Petty videos with our girls last night and my youngest thought “Don’t come around here no more” was really weird, lol. It just makes me miss MTV from the late eighties. *sigh* I also read that he ended every concert with American Girl. So many great hits.

I remember MTV when it first came out in the early 80s…I used to stay up all night watching it! The number of hits from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is astounding.

and I will tell you a little secret…I was actually a dancer in a video made for MTV by a small rock band from Maryland…part of the reason I stayed up so late was to catch a glimpse of it as it was only put on air during the wee hours of the morning 🙂

MTV in its infancy was such a unique venue…now videos are so ubiquitous that no one gives them much thought. And yes, Michael Jackson’s Thriller video was stupendous! Like a mini movie, right?

Used up my sample of Malle’s Lys Mediterranee. It smells more like a water lily than a lily to me, with a distinct marine accord. I tend to dislike floral aquatics, but this one is elegant and very well made, so while I do not love it, I find it wearable and pleasant.
By the afternoon I could still smell it on my wrists, but I wanted more perfume, so I chose Lush Death & Decay as my afternoon lily. The name is quite appropriate: it’s a pale, waxy, powdery and withering lily. Despite its funeral style, it’s quite pretty and elegant. I think it would suit Morticia Addams.

I think Death & Decay is a great Lily-one of the few I can wear. I like Lys Med but couldn’t wear it. It overwhelmed me after an hour and lasted forever on my skin. I left the sprayed card in my bag and it scented my bag nicely for about a week.

It’s been really cold for a long time and central heating is still not on.
I’m in a sweater, wearing wool socks my mom knit for me, an angora shawl and two sheep wool blankets.

Could not resist the urge to order some soaps and a candle from Nesti Dante yesterday just to feel cozy at last.
They are not very expensive but somehow provide a feeling of luxury.

The candle is Lavender & Verbena
    and soaps are Cypress, Iris,
Imozioni in Toscana – Campagna Dorata, a very well reviewed here Borghi e Monasteri,
but the most interesting soap for me to try is from their Chic Animalier series.
It’s called “Bronze Leopard” (I am addicted to anything panther or leopard, apparently).

And it should have a slightly animalic smell of a sensual and provocative leopard 🙂
(Myrrh and Ginger Tea blended with aromatic Patchouli)

I also want to try everything from Zoologist by the end of the year but especially Civet.
    Other than my own cat,
which one of them smells like animal fur with traces of VdN on it the most? =)

Robin , you smell great! I already tried that combo of Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate over Aftelier Ancient Resins Body Oil and is really good. Thanks Elisa P. I have also tried it with Kyoto and it is also so relaxing and comfy. I am pretty sure the Ancient Resins works out nicely together with most incense perfumes

Hahaha you two are doing a good job breaking down my resolve. I mean…technically body oils don’t count as perfume purchases, so I wouldn’t be violating my no-buy. And I just looked it up and it’s only $40. That’s free, right? (The only thing currently standing in my way is that I have yet to smell an Aftelier I like. But Ancient Resins gets such unconditional love!)

It’s not a very challenging smell and I don’t think it really subs out for perfume since it’s not super strong or long lasting. If you like SSS Incense Pure, Amber Incense (closer in smell), Forest Walk etc., you’ll like it.

Man, I used to LOVE Vanille Tonka, mostly because of that ridiculously cheerful lime up top. And then PdN reformulated it a few years ago. It’s still good, but it’s just Not The Same and I find myself ignoring my bottle.

I have no idea about the bottle this is from. Its was sent to me in a swap in a small decant. I really love it, but now that I know its been reformulated I won’t fall in love <3

Vanilla can be hit or miss, this one and Vanille Equise by AG don't have a huge dollop of sugar I find. Perfect to wear in the fall temperatures and very cozy!

I can’t pinpoint when I bought the bottle, as I was merely standing on the edge, peering down into the rabbit hole. Maybe early 2010’s. Hope this helps! ????

You smell great Robin! I wore that combo last night. I think Ouarzazate may be the first bottle I actually drain in forever.
House twins in CdG Holygrapie from a lovely swap partner. Smells like someone sprayed something like Shaal Nur on a doll. It’s kind of vegetal, herbal green up top-probably the rhubarb-that settles into a creamy, sweet, nuttiness which does have a bit of a doll’s head smell to it. Fun and pleasant without being too weird. Glad to have tried it.
RIP Tom Petty ???? I liked his music but never got to see him live. I have a Traveling Wilburys somewhere in my apt. I’ll hunt it down later. What a group of greats that was!

I like the simpler teapot, but the coffee pot is more Versace.

The teapot looks poorly functioning (handle would get too hot and is the wrong shape; hard to pour when full.) But at that price, I don’t suppose people are buying them to drink tea from.

First thing I thought of when I saw it was that handle is going to last a year or two, max. But I think you’re right, nobody is going to buy it and use it frequently.

More love here for Calligraphy Rose! Have any of you tried Adam Levine for Women? It’s another warm spicy scent that works well in the fall and smells more expensive than it is (created by Yann Vasnier). Widely available these days for $13 or less at places like T..J. Maxx.

wearing TF Velvet Orchid. It’s funny, I think all the talk about TF got me to order this – advertising works! wish I had read more reviews before ordering my large sample – it’s so hard to be objective testing a fragrance when there are poor reviews from people you respect (Elisa 🙂 BUT, Angela’s idea that the Falcon Crest characters would wear VO could save this for me.

So it’s not a scrubber, and I can’t believe there is no patchouli in here…it reminds me of the caramel-ly patchouli I smell in Juicy Couture and Elixir de Merveilles.

Also wearing Revlon “Tom Tomato” liquid lip stick (thanks to lovestosmellgood!) Love it. And I love the application – the liquid format makes the color more manageable – less cake-y than lipstick – and the stick helps to outline the lips without lip liner. I think I’ll go back for a neutral color too.

All of the TF Orchid’s work best for me in colder weather, and in small doses. The VO Luminaire is easier to wear than the original.

I will put some Tom Tomato on later today, I find that I have to apply a little lip balm before hand or else my lips get dry. The color lasts and lasts. Let me know what other color you get so I can check it out too!

Someone on here recommended lipstick queen and I adore my red tint lippy from there, it doesn’t last, well..if you sip tea yes..but eat lunch no..but I love the color and the texture.

TF has never worked for me. The one I loved got discontinued so I just gave up on him. Shanghai Lilly is nice and still in production.

After my No. 19 wore off yesterday, post-dentist (looks like he will be able to salvage this cracked tooth with a crown, whew), I re-tried Chergui from a more recent sample than my 2011 one. I liked it better; whatever was in the older version of it that smelled like old people’s houses* seems to be gone now. I’d heard it was reformulated and thought I’d give it another shot… and it doesn’t bother me now, but I think it’s less interesting too.

    * When I was a kid, my grandmother used to drag me around with her to visit all her friends, and while they talked, I would eat hard candies out of the candy dish and look at the painted plaster cornucopiae and Last Suppers and Jesuses on the walls. Miss Josie, Miss Pearl, Miss Janet, Miss Willie Maude — all their houses smelled sort of musty and sweet, with undertones of mildewed cellar.

I know that smell exactly! My grandpatents house smelled like that but with a hint of yellow Listerine emanating from the bathroom, and a few moth balls wafting out from a closet. And eating from the candy dish while looking at the ornate but kitchy clock that made a rhythmic scratchy noise. Thanks for the memory jog!

I moved into my grandparents’ house once it had been permanently abandoned and the overwhelming smell was really hard to get rid of. I worked for months and months to empty the place (closets full of unused wrapping paper, empty photo film boxes, exterior envelopes from bills received – fire hazard much?; basement filled with expired canned food; furniture purchased no later than 1970 – all of it; drapes and carpet installed at purchase in 1964; etc.)

The smell was so pervasive, and a bit creepy, truth be told. It wasn’t until everything was out and I could clean head to toe that it finally receded.

Thank you for your concern, everyone – it’s much appreciated! The treatment for shingles is antivirals + whatever works for you to relieve symptoms (antihistamines and OTC painkillers). And, as Robin noted, whiskey – though, I had a Manhattan, not a shot.

So I’m all set. Just feeling grumpy and gross and annoyed that the people who thought I should see a doctor were right.

Not to be morbid, but I think this scent is perfect for a day spent visiting memorials of loved ones who’ve passed. It’s beautiful but austere, quiet.

I am once again failing at the community project, and am wearing Penhaligon’s Halfeti from my little bag of post-swim samples. (The lovely Penhaligon’s woman who handed it to me some months ago said it was their best American seller, but I never hear about it here on NST.)

My swim this morning was great; I had a whole lane to myself the entire time! AND I was sporting a new, “100 % chlorine-proof” swimsuit (yeah, right; we’ll see how it holds up) that I absolutely bought this weekend to make myself feel better about my shattered Apple Watch. Mope.

Best of good mornings NST. The variable weather has me wishing I hadn’t been quite so optimistic about packing my winter costs away. Oh well…another day in warm perfumes is not something to complain about. I’m wearing the ever-lovely, always desirable Black Cashmere. Soon my bottle will be empty, and I will have to begin my back-up. I wonder whether I will turn out to spend my last bottle lavishly and enjoy it while I have it, or whether I will be miserly in my consumption and try to eke it out for ever? I’m more prone to the first sort of behaviour, but … Black Cashmere! Oooh, dunno. I might come over all hoarderly.

Hey, I’m really enjoying seeing the perfumes you’re all wearing that I’ve never heard of. Gives me things to add to my list to try to track down on our visit to the States next year (leave approved; plans being compiled daily). I’m particularly struck by the love that Phlur is getting. I’ll have to locate some.

Be well, all. And please, be safe.

Base: vetiver, cedar, birch and castoreum.

    A very well-behaved floral suede.

Today is BPAL A World Where There Are Octobers (dried leaves and maple. Smells like fallen leaves and a hint of maple syrup). I’m not a fan of BPAL’s citrus or gourmand stuff for the most part, but their autumn themed perfumes are their best offerings imo. I love their dead leaf note in particular. Anyway, it’s a lovely fall day in Seattle. I hope everyone is safe.

They unfortunately don’t have any scents left in their GC that have the dead leaves note! (At least, they didn’t last time I checked.) However, the current crop of ‘Weenies is out, and they’ll probably be available until December or so, so there’s plenty of time to check out reviews on the forum if you don’t want to blind buy a bottle.

That being said, I’m probably going to pick up Dead Leaves & Pink Peppercorn no matter what.

Waiting for the pest control guy–squirrels again?–and stopping by to say hello.

I haven’t worn perfume much lately. My mother had a heart attack back in July, and her health really declined from there on. We called in hospice on the 1st of September — and then last week she passed away. I still can’t really believe it.

I guess I’ll get back to wearing perfume sometime, but I’m just not feeling it right now.

    Be well, NST friends —

RIP Tom Petty. One of the local NPR radio stations in my area was playing nothing but Tom Petty songs all day today. I didn’t realize what a ginormous catalog of work he had. I ought to find my “Full Moon Fever” CD and rip it to my laptop one of these days.

Hi everyone. I’m wearing Phlur Siano today. I feel enveloped in my personal cloud of beauty. Not sure how much it projects, but hey, it makes me happy. I got my full bottle and yes it’s got an impressive magnetic cap. It’s white and utilitarian, letting in no light. But I confess I still do love pretty sparkly glass bottles a lot!

Fille de Berlin this morning, which was just the ticket, feeling like a good match for a bright day with a sharp autumn bite in the air and a cutting wind that makes leaves skitter around and the skirt of your coat swirl about. The final drydown of that got swamped by a whacking great dose of menthol and eucalyptus courtesy of a big smear of Tiger Balm on my arm (lifting with injuries, bleh!) I like the smell, but damn. My watering eyes!

And a little nostalgic spritz of Anais Anais for contemplation at bedtime.

    SOTD = Guerlain Iris Ganache

After yesterday’s Gourmand Coquin, today’s Iris Ganache is not as sweet experienced with that comparison! This one is a chameleon in me – on the one hand, it smells like lightly lipsticked lips eating chocolate and then morphs into woody vanilla and then chocolatey Iris. I’m not doing a good job of explaining it, but heh,mI hope you get the picture. It wears very close to skin and the dry down is fabulicious.

I may just stick with Guerlain for the week. Now to find a Guerlain with Lily….

Spent yesterday happily wearing a former favorite, Chanel No. 22. It was one of the few in my regular rotation in the 80s (Tom Petty’s heyday!), before I fell down this rabbit hole and acquired dozens of options. In hindsight, though, I did pretty well re fragrance even in the 80s: my regulars were No. 22, Diorissimo, and Anne Klein II, with an occasional spritz of Pheromone.
