Monday scent of the day 10/2

Posted by Robin on 2 October 2017 240 Comments

It's Monday, and it's the International Day of Non-Violence (in honor of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi), and it's World Habitat Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I overslept today, and woke to the bad news about Las Vegas. I'm going with Diptyque Tam Dao.

Reminder: on 10/6, wear a fragrance with lily, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yet another Monday, but at least quite peaceful one for me. Plus Undina published a post with Rusty pictures, so I’m happy. Monday is when I need my daily dose of cat cuteness the most.

I’m rocking Chanel Cuir de Russie today. My decant is few years old now. It doesn’t make it vintage but it does smell good & glorious.

Donna Karan Gold for lily week. Definitely lily and something green. I cannot really say why, but there is something I do not like in this fragrance. I detect something toxic in it.

Kinda feel the same way, though I don’t think I’d describe the note as toxic. I liked a lot about Gold, but there was just a certain high pitch to it that lingered, and bothered me a little bit, so I gave it away. I remember liking the hammered metal look of the bottle.

Maybe high-pitched or screechy describes it better. Yes, it’s a pretty lily in white, golden and green, when this note fades. But then this dissonant note returns and practically ruins the whole scent for me.

If I might ask — is it the edt or the edp version? Apparently there’s a noticeable difference in the concentrations.

My bottle of Donna Karan Gold turned bad in six months to the point of being completely unwearable and not even good for a room scent. I have never had a scent turn so quickly and I never bought it again.

My heart is so heavy for Las Vegas, and everyone who has been affected by violence in recent months/years. Can’t think of much else to say at the moment about that.

This morning brought a definite chill in the air, so I’m reached for Clinique Aromatics in White. Powdery musky goodness!

you can shred the ginger ahead of time and it freezes well in a zip lock bag. I also do this for garlic. life of a mom of 2..every minute counts.

I don’t have many cool weather lilies- do own FBs of Cartier Baiser Vole and Guerlain AA Lys Soleia but they’re in storage till spring. Luckily I found a little juice left in the bottom of a TF Shanghai Lily sample so that’s what I’m wearing today. Very pretty.

Have you tried TF Lys Fume? I’ve used up my decant, but thought at the time it was like someone else had made the missing lily-scented Hermessence (not LOTV). It is not often that messieurs Ford and Ellena could be confused with each other.

Not sure what the theme is this week, but if it’s flowers, pretty sure I won’t be participating. I’m just doin’ my thang in SHL 777 Taklamakan. The weather has done a 180 and it was brisk and cold this morning. T-Rex was all fired up and she was unable to behave in a decent fashion at the dog park, so I booted her out and made her do a LOT of obedience work just outside the fence, while all the other dog played nice inside. She’s a bit disgruntled at the moment. ????

Thanks to everyone who lightened my perfume load over the weekend at the freebiemeet. Some great perfumes are headed your way!

Currently: laundry, pumpkin spice coffee, and a US Atlas. I’m planning a cross country route from SC to OR and I have 3.5 weeks to make the journey. No certain plans except I want out of the Southeast ASAP, and then just meander in a west/northwest fashion, stopping at interesting places along the way. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears!

I won’t mention the news because it’s just horrendous. I’m ashamed of being human at this moment in time.

Keep smelling beautiful NSTers, because you’re all tipping the scales back in the right direction. ✌????

Almost anywhere on the coast, Ashland which has theater in one the most beautiful settings possible, French Glen/Steen Mountains in the southeastern part of the state if you really want to get away from it all – and I mean all, Crater Lake because it really is that beautiful, the Columbia river gorge, the Wallowa Mountains in the northeastern corner of the state (hiking, climbing, ghost towns), and of course, Powell’s when you’re in Portland! My great, great, great (maybe one more great) aunt came to Portland in 1851, and the family has been there ever since, so Oregon has a part of my heart.

My gosh, you are old school Oregon! How great, and I have duly noted your suggestions. I will be there at least 3 months, so that should give me time to explore. The coast is really calling me…! I am trying to imagine the will, fortitude, and determination of your great, great, great(!) aunt…can you imagine if she had left a diary? Just googled Powells and I’m already smitten????

I am duly impressed by your dog training. I had a terrier who was always too fired up and unable to behave in a decent fashion at the dog park, so it was just taken off the menu for him. I actually found his behavior dog-like and terrier-ish, but other humans freaked out when they saw their dogs having too much fun with mine so we stopped going.

Nothing impressive at all. I used to train and compete in AKC Obedience competition and taught puppy, basic and advanced lessons in a former life, so it’s all left overs. I’m conflicted about dog parks, mostly due to owners. I tend to be very careful and we skip it if I get a bad vibe or if there are more than 4-5 dogs. I’m very vigilant, watching all the dogs interact to detect behaviors that could turn into an ugly confrontation. T-Rex is very “terrier” like in her behavior, focus, and determination, so I get you ????

I’m wearing Eau des Merveilles today. Feeling very off – the news in general has really caused my anxiety levels to rocket lately.

Oh well, it’s 90s day at school today and all of my students are dressed like all of my high school friends – bit of a weird flashback. They listened with horror to my tale of not having a cell phone until gasp! I was in grad school! and tried to imagine what high school was like for me and my dinosaur friends. I love working with kids – they bring me a lot of hope.

    SotD = Vanille Galante

i’ve missed wearing this one. some sources say there’s a lily note in VG. i dunno, maybe there is, maybe not. vanilla and lily can have a similar feeling, tropical, heady, overwhelming at times.

swiped from the Hermes website, here’s what JCE says about VG,

“I wanted to respond to this smell which could be described as lazy and repetitive – and some see that as its strength – with an invitation to rediscover another vanilla, an unusual, complex and paradoxical one, like a fragile plant after a long winter, one you hope to see flower again, all the more unexpectedly…The fragrance of a strange flower, light as a trade wind, wafting under our noses with hints of spice, cognac and smoked wood, somewhere between petals and cigars, skin and cocoa.”

what a day, what a day. i’m going back to bed.

Yeah, a heavy heart today after Sunday’s dialogue of the deaf in Catalonia and now the latest pointless horror in Las Vegas. On a more parochial note I’m also very sad to see Monarch Airlines go bust; they were always more professional and pleasant to fly than their low-cost competition. It will gall me to see their routes taken over by glorified human package handling services like Norwegian or ruddy Ryanair.

SOTD is BeauFort London “Vi et Armis”.

    Top: black pepper, tea leaf and cardamom;
    Mid: whiskey, incense and opium;
    Base: tobacco, birch and oud.

Sampling Santal 33 on the triangular part of the hand between index finger and thumb (I feel like there should be a name for that part of the hand, but I don’t know what it is). Perfume is nice, a little dab ‘ill do ya.

Have any of you ordered the 5 sample set from Parfum MDCI? The cost of 5 good sized samples shipped from Europe for about $100 seems “reasonable” (given other European shipping cots).

I bought mine at least three years ago. The newer fragrances did not exist back then. I remember Peche Cardinal, Rose de Siwa and Vepres Siciliennes. I also sampled La Belle Helene. I was a newbie at the time. I ended up with a bottle of Peche Cardinal but would probably go for Rose de Siwa now. I find MDCI perfumes beautifully elegant and rather formal.

A country song comes to mind that goes, “God is great, beer is good and people are crazy.” I’m not sure about the first part but the people are crazy bit I have to agree with. Before Colombine, you never saw or heard of mass shootings and now this stuff in Las Vegas. What the h*** happened?

It’s my last day of vacation and I haven’t even gotten in the shower yet. On skin, I have vintage Miss Dior and on my bathrobe, Amouage Epic Woman. Put the both of them together, you get Ubar. Since it’s gonna be 78F, I think I will apply vintage Bal PdT or Cuir de Russie today.

I had my hair cut this morning (ok, trimmed) then wandered around, and did some perfume sniffing. I tested the new Tiffany’s, it was so light, I could barely smell it. Also the new Michael Kors, which smelled alright, but boring. I currently have one wrist sprayed with Narciso Poudre and the other sprayed with Shalimar edp. Love and prayers to the people in Las Vegas, I can’t even imagine…

ha, yes, don’t bother. I did have to scrub Tiffany & Co, also scrubbed Gabrielle, almost scrubbed Twilly, but will sample it once more to be sure, because Hermes. It might layer well with Vanille Galante.

Of the new-ish easy-to-find-at-the-mall scents I’ve tried, Gucci Bloom is the one I liked best. I will revisit it, though the bottle is meh.

SOTD is Poivre 23 from my sample set of Cities. I love this one. The pepper is nose-burning for the first 5 seconds. Then it comes down to mostly labdanum. It’s very calming.

Almost concurrently with the Las Vegas news, I got the notice that a high school friend who was visiting Vegas with his wife was safe. And I am very glad about that, but it also made me think of all the people who got the news that their loved ones were not safe. I either have too many words, or none.

I broke part of a tooth on Friday and am off to see the dentist in a few moments. It doesn’t hurt, but this is the third molar I have had crumble in the past ten years, and I begin to wonder if those crazy people associating the Essure device (Google it) with various and seemingly non-related medical issues aren’t right after all.

Agree with common opinion that it’s a very nice modern lavender barbershop eau de cologne. Maybe the ingredients and the perfumer’s time actually worth the money.

    Nothing exciting for me though.
I always judge the fragrance by imagining someone who’s signature perfume it could be. And that person does not interest me at all.

It’s cool and overcast here and I am wearing D600, my one-size-fits-all scent. It really does go everywhere, can be dressed up or down and always smells wonderful.

I made Chicken Tikka Masala yesterday from a recipe in the local paper because it said the serving size was four, and there is only me to eat it. I figured I’d freeze two servings and eat two this week. Once completed, I could only stare at the amount in disbelief. It’s four servings if you are feeding adolescent boys, but for the rest of us it’s three times that.

Yesterday I wore Week-end in Normandy, because I actually was a weekend in Normandy. Pretty and somewhat sheer. Not really my style but its totallay not offensive and very likeable.
Normandy smells like autumn now: smoky chimneys, apples, mushrooms and decaying leafs.

Today I am wearing Vitrum by Sammarco. Smoky vetiver. When weather is cooler the rose in it is more detectable! Love it.

Your dimensions are not standard, from what I saw on a couple websites, but maybe something like that would help? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00330430/

My perfumes are stored on the shelves and in the drawers in the walk-in closet. Drawers are more practical since it’s easier to see everything you store in them. Shelves look better for displaying/enjoying your perfumes but unless your collection is relatively small, it’s hard to remember where you have waht when you want quickly to use something.

Talking of skank…just tripped over the leg of the toilet seat contraption while in the process of emptying Alex’s night time pee bottle …remember those Tom Ford magazine adverts where the models are splashing and pouring perfume over each other…well imagine that but with 300ml of urine, happening in slo-mo as tendrils of pee head straight for my face….it’s kind of niche but not the stuff of dreams…anyway, so much for Secretions des Invalides …now for the good stuff:Epice Marine.

No lilies for me this week: they have all been excised from the collection as they give my fiancé the migraine. I’m wearing Passage D’Enfer.

I had the most vivid dream last night and it made me think of a Community Project: Tell us of a dream you’ve had (anytime in your life) and choose a fragrance to go with it.

My dream last night was of a group of women held prisoner by a man, who banded together and escaped in fabulous and exciting ways, via horses and trains and daring dashes through the shrubbery… I would probably pick the wild green fig of Ex Libris…

I went to check out my nearest Nordstrom’s perfume department yesterday and it turned out to be one of the smallest perfume sections I’ve ever visited. Tiny!

Managed to walk away with a few samples and this a.m. I’m trying Gabrielle. I can’t wrap my head around this being formulated for the youth market. Surely Chanel test marketed and knows something I don’t, but it just doesn’t strike me as something a young woman would gravitate to or wear. To my nose, it’s a perfume well-heeled moms, aunts and grannies would have worn in the 80s. I don’t mean that in a bad or in a good way – it just strikes me as “department store chic for a woman of a certain age” from a long-gone era.

It is very low-wattage, btw. Pretty much a skin scent from the start on me.

I am playing hooky — or at least working from home — today, wearing Memory Motel and sampling the Parfums Quartana series on strips. I have had them for ages but was inspired by Persolaise to really give them some serious sniffs. There are definitely some good ones in here that will get skin time.

One of my kitties is hiding under my blanket. Given the world, I might want to join her.

It’s spicy in a way that I really like; not too foody, not harsh, just piquant. I got mostly carnation and spice in what I’d consider a casual but fairly potent scent.

Tam Dao is much creamier, a veryvery smooth sandalwood-centered fragrance with none of the cedar/oud edges of 10CC

I think 10CC is brighter and more complex than Tam Dao, which feels like a heavy monolithic sandalwood/cedar.

I feel like I got to 10CC too late; the bottle I own seems sort of harsh, although I also got what you mean about the monolithic nature of Tam Dao. I keep looking for the perfect sandalwood and have yet to find it. (I love the sandalwood in Mohur and others, but its not the main show.)

Amy have you tried any of the sandalwood attars? The Rising Phoenix makes a fairly reasonably priced pure sandalwood and his Yeti attar (sandalwood = ambergis) is divine. Feel-out has also released a couple of sandalwoods that are pretty impressive.

    SOTD = Guerlain Gourmand Coquin

I woke up to the news re: Las Vegas. And each time I heard / read the news, the number dead and injured kept climbing. My company has more people there than I thought and rhank goodness, they, plus business travel and people vacationing there were all safe; however, we cannot be certain of the emotional toll.

kpaint – as promised, I wore Gourmand Coquin today. It bears no resemblance to Neroli Outrenoir. Instead, it reminds me of FM Dries van Noten but without the sandalwood, tonka and exploding musk. Although not listed as a note for GC, I smell a less spicy gingerbread, kind of a mix between snickerdoodles and speculoos, topped with sweet and boozy vanilla. Full disclosure – I only wore DvN 3x because the exploding musk was sucked the air out of my lungs. Given the choice, I would rather be able to breathe than smell good to others. Longevity is excellent (4 sprltzes and it is still going strong) and sillage is moderate.

    Tomorrow – Iris Ganache!

Things have been so hectic lately that I’ve hardly had a chance to even read up, and I miss it!

My wallet went missing at a restaurant this weekend. With identity theft I’ve been so stressed out! Spent the weekend reporting to police, putting stops on cards, etc. It is quite the production and the costs are sure going to mean no new perfumes for quite some time.

A little ray of sunshine came today when the postman delivered my wallet that had been put in a mailbox. Money gone of course but at least I don’t have to replace my driver’s license and birth certificate. A small thing in the light of the news today and in Edmonton but I’ll take any positive news with gratitude.

Pulled out an old sample of Chypre Palatin and it is incredible.

Yes, that is some good news today. Glad you got your wallet back. Small things! I’m sure you were relieved.

I hadn’t heard about LV this morning as I was running late so didn’t have the news on. Some co-workers were talking at work, at first I thought but was about Edmonton, but was quickly informed it was about Las Vegas. So incredibly sad.
