Thursday scent of the day 9/21

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2017 315 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday, and happy International Day of Peace! Its also Leonard Cohen's birthday (may he rest in peace), Rosh Hashanah and Pecan Cookie Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm trying Tauerville Patch Flash (on a blotter, so far, because you can never be too careful with patchouli).

Reminder: on 9/22 wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

happy New Year and Happy International Day of Peace…wishing and praying for peace amongst all sentient beings with a significant decrease in both misogyny and misandry amongst human beings :)

SOTD and for tomorrow as well is Greylocke…you know I forgot to mention that I got two compliments yesterday while wearing it…one from a man and one from a woman :)

Good morning, my fine, smelly friends. I needed a dose of NST community today.

Wearing Tam Dao and already feeling a bit more grounded and clear than I otherwise might. It’s been a weird week/month/year, and I hadn’t had a craving for a specific scent in a while, but today’s mood called for this one. Such a calming, meditative one.

Going to a career “boot camp” this weekend in the hopes that I can decide what to do next with my life. We’ll see how that turns out.

I hope everyone is well, healthy, and if you celebrate, Shana Tovah!

Hi Sheri! Thanks for the sweet words – I really appreciate it! I figure the boot camp can’t hurt, so we’ll see what comes of it.

Also loving the new profile pic – is that an orchid? My favorite flower.

The gravatar image is a Japanese iris out in my back yard. The center bloom of the clump gets bigger each year, and it’s gorgeous.

SOTD is Vilhelm’s Purple Fig, which Robin reviewed last year, I think, and which I love. And I only have a tiny sample of it, with no chance that I can see of getting more. Fig season is ending, but not on me. Not quite yet.

It’s been too warm here to think of fall scents, but Purple Fig is a delicious transition.

Feeling better today, wearing Atelier Santal Carmin from a sample. I matched it with my new grocery store sandalwood bar soap, which I wish was a perfume, or at least a lotion. It’s going to be 90 here for 5 days, woo hoo! Enjoying every last drop of sunshine!

Oh, yum! You smell marvelous. I wore a bit of vintage Shalimar EdC last night, with thanks to a wonderful NSTer. It was heaven. When it’s gone I will comfort myself with Dzing! They are very different scents, but both have the gentle and comfy leather note I adore.

SOTD is MPG Iris Bleu Gris. A kind friend sent me a sample from her decant. I never thought anything could make me love powder, but this does. So naturally, it is d/c.

Anyone able to recommend something similar but still available for purchase? I am in the UK, so european would be better (sadly I’ve found most of the USA niche companies won’t/can’t ship here).

I saw it on ebay recently, anarchkitty. Don’t know if it’s still there, but worth a look.

It seems quite unique to me. Of course, you could also try other irises starting with Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist.

By the way, I was looking for a specific vintage. I think it is still in production but has change over time. It’s one of those fragrances where you might or might not like the new version.

          Thanks NozKnoz!

I checked out eBay – nothing on Uk at the moment, but I think I’ll start stalking (thank you). I didn’t realise it might still be in production, and will certainly bear in mind that it might too have been refomed. The UK MPG stockist didn’t have this listed, but they only showed about 10-12 in total, so I think I will ring and ask them if there are more to order that they don’t carry stock of.

That sounds like a great approach.

I’m seeing the new packaging on First in Fragrance (Germany), which is an excellent source. If your sample is from the new packaging — your friend could look and tell you — that would work.

(The old bottles were red for the masculines, the new are clear, and Iris Bleu Gris was red, even though it’s unisex.)

SOTD is SmellBent Gypsy because I’m supposed to be in a room full of people renewing my BLS/ACLS, but so far, no one else has arrived. Start time 10am….

I succumbed to the pumpkin spice craze the other day. Bought pumpkin spike pancake mix as well as ground coffee. All I need is a COOL BREEZE!! Is that too much to ask for at the end of September ?!? Sheesh!

And Happy Birthday Mr Cohen! You are missed.

Had to be something cool enough for a 30 degree day but appropriate for September. Ay yi yi. I have a decant of C de G Zagorsk at my desk so I sprayed that when I got here and I’m enjoying it.

        The exact (uplifting) text:

        Unetaneh Tokef

“On Rosh Hashanah it is inscribed, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed – how many shall pass away and how many shall be born, who shall live and who shall die, who in good time, and who by an untimely death, who by water and who by fire, who by sword and who by wild beast, who by famine and who by thirst, who by earthquake and who by plague, who by strangulation and who by lapidation, who shall have rest and who wander, who shall be at peace and who pursued, who shall be serene and who tormented, who shall become impoverished and who wealthy, who shall be debased, and who exalted. But repentance, prayer and righteousness avert the severity of the decree.”

Today I’m sampling Agonist Hope. I like it a lot: it’s a bit simple, with orange + woody scents, and some incense. Since I love all of these elements I am loving this.

Update after two hours: no longer liking the Hope so much, as now all I can smell is cedar. This is a fall scent like what you get if you store your wool sweaters in a cedar chest–not the best! too strong!

And on another topic, I’m also trying my sample of Grandiflora Queen of the Night, and am noticing a resemblance to, of all things, datura scents! Now I happen to love these (I own both Keiko Mecheri’s and SL’s versions) but I know many people loathe them. Sure, the QotN is much more delicate, and nuanced, but I think it’s still there, and I wondered if anyone else like Lucasi has noticed this.

So, I went to post my SOTD several hours ago, and could not, for the life of me, remember what it was.
This getting older crap is not for the faint of heart :P

SOTD: Vintage (and I suspect watered down) Jolie Madam.

Reveling in this summer weather and wearing AG Hadrien. And just so we’re clear, those TV weather people can shove it with their talk about the first day of fall being tomorrow. It’s the equinox and they’re not the same thing. This real first day of fall is when I pull my sweaters and boots out of storage. ;)

This New York Times article on the wild side of Wedgewood is more relevant to Robin’s tea pot series rather than perfume, but it’s a fascinating story. I’ve always been confounded by how Art Deco had two quite different stylistic faces: the ultra streamlined, and the dainty fairies and courtiers.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/20/t-magazine/design/wedgwood-jasperware.html?action=click&contentCollection=t-magazine&module=NextInCollection&region=Footer&pgtype=article&version=issue&rref=collection%2Fissue%2Fts-sept-24-design-luxury-issue

Wikipedia cites a 2006 PBS program on Susannah Margaretta “Daisy” Makeig-Jones, but the links are broken. I hope someone has written a good book on her.

Found another book, originally published in 1921 that lists Makeig-Jones as the author. I’m having both ILL’d to me.

        Author: Makeig-Jones, M.
Title: Some glimpses of Fairyland / depicted by M. Makeig-Jones.
Published: Etruria, Stoke on Trent : Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, 1972.
        Description: 48 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 22 cm.

Hello all! It’s Thursday AM, I have not started work yet, and already this week I have worked 45 hours. Not A Happy Worker Bee.

Now that I’ve got that off my chest… Leonard Cohen! Well then my SOTD will be Aftelier Ancient Resins since that was created for him. And since it’s wonderful, and fall-like too.

Robin, how do you like Patch Flash? I tried it a couple of days ago and was distinctly meh about it.

Been watching the USPS bounce my bottle of Bruno Fazzolari Unsettled from town to town around me. San Francisco… to San Jose… to Santa Cruz… back to San Jose… to my town… claimed to be out for delivery yesterday, but nope, back to my PO… will it arrive today? Who knows?

You are so incredibly lucky…I cannot even begin to tell you how many packages and mail has been misdelivered. I lost out on a Posh Peasant package worth 89 dollars two summers ago because the mailman misdelivered it and the folks he delivered it to ignored his handwritten note AND I thought only international customers needed to buy insurance (nope! I did as well and Posh Peasant took my money but did not replace the package)….I have spent countless hours on the phone time and time again with postal supervisors when I track packages and they show up as delivered but they are nowhere to be found (because they are delivered to the wrong place!)….and one Christmas I ordered three bottles of Dames as Christmas presents and they were missing in a NYC post office for three weeks…Jeffrey Dame was kind enough to overnight three new bottles on Dec 23 to the recipients….who received there replacement bottles on Dec 24th and then , miraculously, the original bottles on Dec 26th! and I had someone drive to my house from a mile and half away because she had received one of my packages (our addresses were not even remotely similar)….this is one of the reasons I am wary of participating in splits, swaps or freebies….I also get others mail constantly and have to return it…unfortunately we have been missing items that don’t always get returned….sorry for the rant but like I said…no faith based on my own personal nightmarish experience…..(and no disrespect to the mail carriers that ARE competent and do their jobs properly)

I had a similar experience with my DHL express package – I was not home to sign for it, so it hang out in Fremont for a while, kept shown as being out for delivery. I ended up complaining to the office of the president, and surprisingly they were very helpful – called both Fremont and SF office, coordinated and made sure I got the package.

Today I am wearing Alaia Paris and drinking a cup of Jasmine Green Tea.

Last week I mentioned that I was busy cooking and cleaning for our out-of-town friends who were staying with us. During their visit, one of them mentioned that she doesn’t wear fragrance, and hasn’t worn any for a long time. Probably 20+ years. She tried a tiny bit of my Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay, and about an hour later, she said she liked it. I gave her a sample to take home with her. I love sharing the gift of fragrance :)

This is the second time this has happened. A few years ago I had a friend who said she had not worn fragrance since she was pregnant with her first child, 23 years prior.

We were shopping together, and I bought a bottle of Bvlgari Au The Bleu. She tried a squirt. We walked around a little longer, and then went back to store and she bought herself a bottle.

A few months later, she took a trip to Grasse, and she came back with a bottle of Habanita. She told me that I rekindled her love of fragrance :)

    SotM = Jour d’Hermes

Was running late and couldn’t decide if I needed perfume before a bike ride. As I opened the door of my clothes & perfume closet, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds to light up a mini bottle of Jour d’Hermes. I decided the universe was telling me to “Pay attention!” so I splashed it on liberally. Though no precipitation was forecast, it’s raining now. I would be out in it on my bike had I rushed out the door without fragrance. What an odd day.

I went swimming at a health club today for the first time ever, because my complex pool is being “renovated” (from what? to what? it was FINE). I went straight from the health club to work, and forgot to bring any scents with me, so I didn’t get a chance to choose an SOTD. I rooted around in my purse and put on the dregs of the only sample I accidentally left in there–the exquisite Odin Milieu Rosa. (Seriously, why don’t people talk about this more often?!) If I were allowed to even think about getting another perfume, I might think about getting this. I could go through 100 mL of it.

Would you like to know what else I forgot to bring? A SHIRT. I FORGOT TO BRING A SHIRT. And the only shirts on sale at the health club were these horrible neon tank tops that I couldn’t possibly wear on their own. So now I’m sitting here at work in a sweatshirt. Yup.

This evening, I will be catching up with an elementary school friend that I haven’t seen in some six years. I will be wearing no shirt. A great fresh impression.

It’ll be great! Don’t worry- you smell fabulous! And you know -your friend will probably be so worried about making a good impression that they won’t notice the sweatshirt. Enjoy!

I once found myself in the same predicament when my shirt was stolen from my locker. It was winter and I wore my parka over a bra for the drive home. Hope your meetup goes well despite the situation.

Oof. Was scentless because I am trying to up my chances of going to the gym. But a trip to Whole Foods for dinner groceries got stalled in the cosmetics aisle as I was tempted to try a few things. First Jardin de Vie Onagre by Waleda, which was a BIG mistake (despite the enticing notes). How to fix it? Well why not Pacifica’s Sandalwood? Can’t smell it over the the hot mess of JdeVO? Add something you have never tried, and spray liberally to make sure can smell it–Pacifica’s Sugared Amber. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That Sugared Amber Dream should come with a warning. I was heading into a headache I think already, but that burnt sugar blast put me over the edge.

I still have not made it to the gym. And despite washing and washing, I still smell like a chemical spill.

    L’shana tova tikateyvu everyone.

Unum Ennui Noir. I have the bottle design, but love the fragrance. This is the first time wear for me, but it might be becoming top fall fragrance for me. Andy Tauer would recoil in horror :)

L’Shana Tova to all who celebrate.

I’m wearing Diptyque Volutes EDT today. I had misplaced my decant and found it a few days ago, so I figure now is as good a time as any to use it. It’s rainy and kind of dark outside, and I really want it to be cooler out than it is.

Hello, all NST, and best of everything to everyone. My Friday project is a bit boring today, because you hear me jabber on and on about it all the time: Black Cashmere. Again. Just because. Again. But boring to say isn’t the same as boring to wear. Yum!

Eric and the Pink Fur of Destiny have had to be retrieved TWICE this morning from the top of the curtain rail in the sitting room. Why, do you think, does he want to take his portentous toy up there? I wonder if it has anything to do with Alexander, who weighs fully 500 grams more and enjoys a game called “Leaping Out at the White One”. I have to say that no one could take you by surprise if you and Destiny are perched at the top of the world….I’ve been thinking that Eric is A Clever Kitten, and I’m beginning to feel I have enough evidence to make this claim for real.

Hey, thank you all for the kind words you said about The Decision and my change of direction. I read them and was really encouraged, but I didn’t get a minute yesterday to interact again. I did get that proofreading finished though! And then I came home, smiled palely at the purrs, had a mug of soup, and fell asleep. The dear one woke me at 10, and I got up and went to bed properly. And another day disappeared….be well, fragrant ones.

I didn’t post yesterday but I also support your decision about waiting to retire. I can definitely empathise because I am also a professor and am on the 2nd of a three-year phase-out retirement plan where I only teach for one semester, and it’s not now–Yay! I chose to do the phase-out plan because I felt rather anxious about going “cold turkey” from teaching for all of those years. I enjoyed my fall semester off so much last year that I thought I’d hate it when I went back to work but once in the classroom I was very excited and happy! This is a good balance and, anyway, I’m writing if not more now than ever, then just as much as ever, going to conferences, speaking at places, and so on. I admire your commitment to your Ph.D. students too. (And P.S. since I am now fostering four tiny kittens at my house, I also empathize about kitten boisterousness! My ankles and neck are covered with tiny scratches of their razor-sharp little claws. But it’s well worth it!)

I noticed yesterday that the tarata trees are in flower (pittosporum eugenioides). These are a,so known as lemonwood and were one of the important trees in Maori scent. The crushed keaves smell of lemon and would be fixed in bird oil. The flowers have that slightly lemon/chlorine/ semen scent you get from some poplar/cottonwood/willow flowers. Very strong. The flowers are clustered and yellow, look a bit like jasmine but easy to overlook as they blend in withthe leaves so well. Gum from the bark was used as a breath freshner and (this I find surprising ) was so long lasting that the gum balls would be passed down through the generations. Anyway, nice to see them in full bloom. Thanks again everyone ! Pohadka and lale , double or nothing!

    SOTD is Jardins d’Ecrivains “Marlowe”.

    Top: tuberose and elemi;
    Mid: myrhh and osmanthus;
Base: oakmoss, labdanum, musk and leather.

I have a cold and can’t judge this fairly. But it’s not really begging me to re-test either.

While making my morning beverage I had a craving for YSL Paris, walked into my bedroom, saw the Carner Barcelona sample I’d pulled out for today and happily put that on. Delightful fruits & nuts & powder, not as sweet as it sounds. Perhaps Paris after I shower. Headed to the clinic later to get a nexplanon/implanon implanted. Fingers crossed that it works as well, if not better than depo does for me. I’ve been on depo for 3 1/2 years but still get cramps very frequently, which I fail to understand. If nothing else, the implant will be more convenient.

Did you get the Heure Exquise EDT or EDP? I have the EDP and I find it powdery. I love it just the same :-). Heure Exquise is available via Fragrantica (I think) so I suggest buying that for yourself and perhaps ask for the Chanel for the holidays.

Double-posting to ask a question: my left big toenail looks all sad and fractured (it’s got vertical breaks in it, instead of being smooth). This has been happening for a few years; it doesn’t seem to fix itself when I cut away old nail and let new nail grow in. The Internet suggests moisturizing the nails and maybe using a nail hardening solution. Any tips from you all? What do you use to moisturize and harden your nails?

I moisturize everything with oil including my nails…but I have incredibly hard nails that tend to get brittle and break so I am not sure the oils will strengthen your nails. Maybe dealing with it nutritionally? Certain foods and minerals are known to strengthen hair and nails.

I take biotin which has helped with my nail growth; I also find that my fingernails split and crack less. I have never had trouble with my toenails though, so I’m not sure about strengthening. My husband uses Naiky Envy on his nails when they get weak.

It took almost 3 years for one of my toenails to grow back properly after I had an accident and dropped something heavy on it. I do take biotin supplements on occasion to help with nail and hair growth.

Yesterday’s SOTD was absolutely nothing at all. I woke up with the Mother of All Headaches, complete with sensitivity to light and some mild nausea. Decided that perfume might be a bad idea as a result.

Thankfully, no headache today. SOTD = Les Exclusifs 28 La Pausa from the generous Hajusuuri, or as some of you call it, “8 Spray La Pausa”. Three sprays for me today, since I’m still feeling a little weird from yesterday. It’s working really well for me!

I’m in a fall favorite, Organza Indecence. I sprayed from the bottle I found at Goodwill some months back because it seems slightly less rich and lighter in color than the bottle I’ve had for years. However, wearing it on its own today instead of side by side with some from the other bottle, it seems plenty rich and just on the edge of still being work appropriate. This is my favorite wood pudding perfume.

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere

I got a 40mL bottle of the pre-formulated version in a previous swap. I have never done a side x side with the current version so I don’t know the difference. I am getting a decant of another pre-formulated in this week’s Swapmeet from a very knowledgeable NSTer so I can confirm for myself that I have the real thing. Love!

Ugly Jeans Countdown – No. 2:

I’m with you on La Colle Noire, it’s growing on me. The first time I wore it the musk note was annoying. This time the roses are wafting nicely. It’s doing an “it’s there then it’s gone then it’s back again” peekaboo thing with my nose, very enjoyable.
