Monday scent of the day 9/4

Posted by Robin on 4 September 2017 247 Comments

Fendi wrappy

Happy Monday and happy Labor Day! Plus, it's Beyoncé's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I've just dragged myself out of bed. I am going to go look for the Fendi Theorema in a sec.

Reminder: On 9/8 we're doing 'world niche'... wear a fragrance from a niche brand that isn't French, Italian or British.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: I don't know how much the Fendi Flowerland Wrappy costs, but they usually run around $150. "Double-sided wrappy in pink silk twill with a multicoloured geometric print. The back is powder pink with a Sixties-style print inspired by Flowerland flowers. To wear around the neck, as a belt, tied at the wrist or to add a touch of colour to bags."

I haven’t showered yet and I am still in Noontide Petals. I will be taking a shower in a minute since I do have to work today, retail doesn’t care if it’s a holiday and you want to hang out with your family. After my shower, I will be wearing LADMM. LADMM is a wonderful fall scent that goes with bonfires and clam bakes.

Starting out the community project this week with Nateeva Dominican Republic (thanks to Elisa P from a freebie meet)

Tea is coffee this morning, french press style and lugged from Holland. Enjoying some peace while the grandparents are skyping with the littles ones.

    Today’s plan is Central Park.

Started reading the book Borders that was recommended on BdJ.

World niche – testing Byrdeo (Sweden) Rose Noir, and I expect to see some house twins this week. 🙂
In the first minute or two it slightly reminded me of Portrait of a Lady – rich earthy rose with tangy fruits. However, POAL is much more dramatic, while Rose Noir is soft, almost shy. The longer I wait, the softer and lighter it becomes. It’s a pretty rose scent, feels right for early autumn.

I’m sampling Ambre Gris by Balmain, but it just isn’t sitting right (too heavy for summer?) so I’m going to shower and start again with either Osmanthus Interdit or Jasmin et Cigarette. Then I will pour a cup of coffee and stop procrastinating – the quizzes that I know are lurking in my bag aren’t going to grade themselves, and the cat has already refused to grade them for me.

    Have a great day everyone!

Nahema. Trying it for the first time. Have I not dabbed enough or is it nose fatigue? I find it too quiet and can’t smell it much already after 3 or 4 hours.

It could be nose fatigue, especially if you have been testing tons of perfume at once. Nahema should be sprayed for best results unless it’s extrait.

I gave away my bottle, just wasn’t for me, but Nahema has a fan base here. Like you, I had the same experience, just put it on and then after awhile I couldn’t smell it.

I could barely smell Nahema the first 3 or 4 times I smelled it, myself, and there was no nose fatigue involved, as it was the first sample of the day each time I tried it. I could tell there was something on my skin, but even freshly-applied, I could not smell it at ALL.

Passed the small parfum bottle on to a friend who said it was in *perfect* shape.

The last time I tried it, I could indeed smell at least part of it, but that part was soapy and bland, so I figure I’m not missing much.

Struggling hard to get to grips with the “Real World” after a 2 weeks holiday in France. I don’t think I have anything that counts as world niche, although I did notice some mention of Amouage, so I’m in French mainstream with YSL Paris vintage EDT which is always wonderful.

Needing more coffee and some Advil this Monday morning, will soon rectify that. Also, need food in a bad way as my cupboards are empty. Beautiful morning here! I won’t go so far as to say “brisk” but there’s definitely a long awaited change in temperature and humidity.

Recovering from 3 twelves, freshly showered, and going with Smell Bent Gypsy again because it’s pretty, uncomplicated, and easy to wear. That’s about all I can handle today.

I really like Friday’s theme and have many that will coincide- the trick will be choosing a specific fragrance.

Hope the headache goes away soon. I read your “3 twelves” as 3 Bear triple strength coffee and I was about to call 9-1-1 to send an ambulance over to get you. Anyhow, YOUR 3-day weekend is here so enjoy!

I did not have a weekend last weekend so despite pleas from our Asia colleagues for a document, I am making them wait just because 1) it is not urgent (especially considering all that we are dealing with here) and 2) I do not like the person asking for it and if he makes this into a big hoo ha, I can make it bigger.

SOTD Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut. Very green and woodsy with vetiver playing a good rol. Too masculine for my taste. I like English Oak and Redcurrant much more. They both did not make it to my shopping list.

How did you manage to score a sample? When I asked for samples in SFA in NYC they looked at me like I had twenty heads….and they even made a face when I asked if I could spray the tester a bit more on my arm (that young SA would NOT take the tester bottle out of her hands!!! I kept having to tell her to spray some more-LOL!)

I would have made a big stink (hence my name 🙂 ) and berated the SA with a “how unprofessional of you to make THAT face – look at yourself in the mirror) and ask to speak to the supervisor and if the JM supervisor also declines, I would ask to speak to the store manager. Not about the samples, but not allowing you to spritz more.

        Ask thegoddessrena and ihadanidea….

I got the samples at the Grand Central Terminal store. I bought a couple of soaps for a birthday present and I asked for them. The SA there are only nice if you buy something, otherwise, like in your case they get pretty annoyed when you try to spray from the testers. That has happened to me already.

not wearing anything new today, but last night I sampled Jayne Ormonde Woman for the second time. The first time I tried it, it was sort of a deep oriental and very interesting. This time I only smell vintage make up. Which is the same thing I smelled when I sampled SL Ambre Sultan – anyone know what that is about?

Usually, perfumes with violets smell powdery and lipsticky (e.g. Guerlain French Kiss, Atelier Silver Iris, Guerlain LPRN Black Perfecto, among others). Weirdly enough, I do not see it listed in Ambre Sultan so thinking that the interplay of Angelica and some of the herbs is giving you that vibe.

oh that is interesting and good to know about Violet. I do like the “grandma’s purse” scent, I think I’ll have to try both Woman and Ambre Sultan again, since I can’t trust my nose yet – I also need to make sure I’m smelling them on clean skin.

I dont know what causes that and i am not familiar with Ambre Sultan, but I do know Ormonde Jayne Woman is a shapeshifter on my skin.

Not every wear feels the same. I found out i get a better experience in not too hot weather with two light sprays. Otherwise it can get too sweet. Also had an experience where it completely fell ‘flat’. But most of the time i exprience a great scent, sweet flowery woods.

Would like to see what one of those Wrappy things looks like with jeans & a crisp white shirt.
Just used some John Frieda Colour Refreshing Gloss. Don’t color my whole head, but periodically get lowlights, and this stuff makes my hair look better. I get out of the shower & let it sit for 20 mins instead of the in-shower use they recommend. Unfortunately, I really dislike the scent, and it lingers through a shampoo or two. Not sure if it’ll be worth applying a competing fragrance.

right now SOTD is Eau de Driveway Sealant…..MR. CM8 and I are sealing half of our driveway…lordie, what a mess and a pain….

While I have a few niche perfumers that I ADORE (Canadian Jessica September Buchanan who owns 1000 Flowers and is the “author” of my top ten of all times Reglisse Noire, Americans Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio, Ineke R. of Ineke Perfumes and Jeffrey Dame of Dame Perfumery) I am going with the American niche company Phlur as my latest obsession for the entire week.

Once we are done I will shower the little black splatters off of my body and face and go with Phlur Moab for its sweet, cinnamon comfort vibe.

Tomorrow I will be in work related seminars all day so I will be in my “fierce force field” of Phlur Greylocke….

Hey, Robin, any chance we could do that as a community project one of these days or did we do something like that already?

Lots of folks go with No 19….Greylocke is similar due to the vetiver, but I find it more scrumptious and chewy (if that makes any sense to you!) and addictive….

SOTD = Memo Paris Eau de Memo

Nice, but not long lasting but it could be that I only used 2 spritzes from a sample?

This past Saturday, my gas tank was a little over 1/3 full so I decided to fill it up. I always use Plus and you never really see it advertised on the big boards and I don’t typically do price comparisons anyway. I have an SUV and the fuel tank holds almost 16 gallons. OMG, I spent $31!!! These are the days I’m glad I don’t drive to work! And…I live in NJ, so theoretically, with all the oil refineries here, fuel should be more plentiful and less expensive than in many parts of the country.

Pretty sure there isn’t a gas station attendant union in Oregon. I remember when I lived there that there were a couple of ballot measures to end the full service only practice and they overwhelmingly failed at the ballot box. I know my mom loved not getting out of the car to pump gas in the rain. 🙂

I love Michigan! When I was a kid we went to Mackinac island. I was horse crazy and but had no skills, which the horse I was riding caught on to quickly. Got about 20 minutes into it and my horse said “He** No!” and took off back to the stable with my seven year old self bouncing around like a rag doll in the saddle. I still remember all the people on the streets stopping, watching, and turning to see us disappear down the road. That horse was bookin’ it!????

When I was a kid, the small mid-Michigan town where I grew up still had a gas station where attendants would pump your gas for you. That was about 20 years ago though.

Ditto. I’d love to have someone else pump gas. One of the reasons I love Oregon (though there are many others, of course!). Didn’t they change that law recently, though, so that there is self service at rural stations?

Have to tell you all, petrol in the UK is over £1.20 a litre (that’s about $1.50), which makes it about $5.70 a US gallon. To fill our sedan car which has about a 15 (US) gallon tank from nearly empty cost £80 last week (a bit over $100). I think it works out at roughly twice the USA price.

Considering I filled a nearly empty tank a few weeks ago for $37, it was an almost 38% increase in fuel cost. I guess it was a shock based on what one is used to paying, rather than its relative cost vs other places where gas is typically way more expensive (to me).

And we are a small but densely populated country (488 people per km2).
So traffic jams everywhere during rush hours in urban areas.
So maybe its a good thing people are discouraged to take a car (you also have to pay a hefty car tax). And public transport is pretty decent.

But it seems our days of fitness are over. Sales of electrical bikes are on the rise. Also, motor scooters are much more popular now.

Well it might be a holiday but it’s sure got its MONDAY on. Our heat wave finally broke last night — yes! — so I threw open the windows — smoke. No! There’s a wildfire going south of here, and I can hardly see across the canyon. Grump. Windows closed again. I know I should count my blessings — no flood, the fire’s nowhere close enough to be a danger — but daaaaaaaang I was so looking forward to fresh air!

Gotta do some work-work later too. MONDAY for sure.

No scent yet… hmm, might need some PULP to chase the grey day away.

SOTD is Assam of India again, mostly because I knew I would be doing some yard and house work today and don’t like wearing anything too heavy for that.

I ordered a Phlur sample kit today! Very excited for it; hopefully will be here by Friday for world niche day (because it’s American and that makes it technically NOT British, French, or Italian, right? 🙂 ) I’m getting Hanami, Olmsted & Vaux, and Greylocke. What have other folks gotten and what do you think of them so far? I’ve seen Moab and Olmsted pop up a few times in the SOTD threads.

Also, a very Happy Labor Day to those in the U.S. It’s only been in the past couple of years that I’ve worked a job where holidays and weekends off are a given. I’ve already said this in the weekend thread, but to all of those who are not eligible for those luxuries, whether you are in retail, medicine, emergency response, restaurants, etc, just know that I see you, and I appreciate all of the work that you do. I hope that at the minimum that you get off of work at a reasonable hour, and that you get a chance to spend time with friends and family.

I have tried all the Phlurs. I am a nutter for this niche house….after having gone off the deep end with the Berdoues and Dame Perfumery I have now honed in on Phlur.

I love all of them. Olmsted and Vaux is very light…a citrus with a creamy vibe….some folks complain of longevity but it must last on my skin as I have gotten loads of comments wearing it. Hanami is NOT an aquatic floral to me…my skin picks up the fig, hazelnut and sandalwood and it reminds me a bit of Angel Muse without the vetiver. Moab is NOT dry on my skin..just came out of the shower and am wearing it….it is incredibly sweet and cinnamon-y…akin to Saffran Troublant and also has a Tauer vibe but less harsh….Greylocke is utterly addictive (and I am NOT a fan of vetiver but this one is glorious!!! vetiver, pine and apple…it is chewy to me and I also got a huge compliment the other day at work while wearing it)…Siano is weird but I like it…has an almost rotten fruit vibe like Pulp and a bit like vintage Calyx but not as tart…Hepcat is super potent…not as sweet as I thought it would be…tobacco, oud and dark vetiver is what my skin picks up….I think it leans more masculine but I will wear it because I like it and I don’t care!

Will be curious to hear your impressions once your sampler arrives….even if you don’t like any of them you can always gift the sampler because the presentation is quite lovely 🙂

Macaque today – most of my on-theme scents aren’t really suited to the warm weather we’re having, but I like this one in the heat.

Still feeling silly and romantic, and slightly ill (with NEW symptoms, what is going on??) – a disorienting combination. But I also got some REALLY good news today, totally unlooked for, so I’ll let my high spirits take over. A happy Monday for me, at least.

Gorgeous day and thankfully I’m off to enjoy it, though my husband is working. Boo. So far, a few errands, a little cleaning, and a walk to the park later.
Wearing a bit of Le Labo Mousse de Chene and still unsure how a feel about it. Sometimes I catch a whiff and I think “how beautiful!” and other times it smells like a men’s 80s mall scent.

Off to the Rodeo (literally) in AG Eau du Sud. It’s supposed to hit 100 degrees and there’s a wildfire burning 30 miles or so from the site so we’ll see how things go.

SotM = Phenomene Verte by Maggie Mahboubian, Parfums Lalun/Lalun Naturals (West Hollywood)

Green, aromatic, floral, and beautifully smooth. The bottle is a few years old and the juice has darkened. It continues to smell wonderful. Love it.

Lalun is a village in the Alborz mountains of Iran where Maggie Mahboubian spent time as a child. I’m looking forward to exploring a wider world-view of fragrance this week.

Triple digit heat + smoke today so I am wearing Cedrat Envirant to trick myself into feeling cool. Some idiot shot off a firework on a heavily-travelled hiking trail, sparked a forest fire, and now one of my favorite areas will be forever changed, so I’m pretty po’ed about that this morning.

I see that the poet John Ashbery died. I was reading his work recently….anyway, I’m in Auckland and spent a couple of hours going perfume crazy . Found some iris perfumes at last and my top 3 are La Pausa, Van Cleef and Arpels Bois d’Iris, and Prada Infusion d’iris. I also tried atelier d’ours (?) iris with gold flakes …and then, as usual, I lost focus and tried Lubin Kismet, Carner D600, Figment for men, lilac bloom, moonlight patouchli, california reverie, gabrielle, marrakech intense ( aesop)….and then another leopard skin coat ( didn’t buy it, thank god)…buckwheat pancakes (food not scent) , three pairs of birkenstocks, oat milk ( vegan shop)….arrived back at my hotel and ate muesli for dinner and laid out my 16 blotters , none of them labelled and thought, ‘when will I ever learn?’ Fortunately I will be at the museum all day today, obsessing over VC&A bois d’iris.

Some do and I see I can get the Prada $50 cheaper from an AustraliaN site. I doubt that I will buy anything while I am here because they were 100ml. I still haven’t sniffed Hiris or Iris Silver Mist. Waterdragon suggests I test sycomore while I am here, too. The two perfumes calling my name are La Pausa and Bracken.

Wearing a fougere bengale sample procured for me by my delightful perfume pal enabling my coffee scent search–this is an intriguing and spicy scent, kind of like what I imagined the Serge Lutens to smell like when I first read the Guide–and much more transparent than the Sl’s turned out to be.

Scent twins today. I’m in BG body cream and a couple sprays of the Eau Fraiche. Wanted to keep it light today as we were visiting my brother in law and his wife this weekend. There was a golf tournament that my bro-in-law was in, my hubby caddied for his brother, and I was able to walk the course with them on Saturday and Sunday. My feet are SORE! Lol..

There was another crazy idiot that started a fire in the backwoods nearby here too. Can’t wait for some rain, it’s been nearly 2 months.

    Mid: cedar, sandalwood, guaiac wood, patchouli, vetiver and saffron;

Happy Labor Day, all! We are officially New Mexicans (is that the correct term?)! Been here since Saturday evening. The moving truck hasn’t arrived, but my car has which contained all of my clothes and we have an air mattress so I’m good! On a side note, the townhouse we are renting is three stories…I’m going to have a tush and legs of steel by the time I move out of here ha! Work starts tomorrow so I’m excited and a bit nervous but I’m sure it will be fine. 🙂

Now on to perfume talk! I grabbed the last of my sample of Un Jardin Sur Le Nil this morning. Just loving it. Will have to try others of that series. Going to take a nice hot bath later so will try something along the theme of the week after that. All of my juice arrived with my clothes in my car so I’m excited to plan out my scents for the week. I will try and use some restraint since it’s a new job, but restraint usually isn’t the name of my game ha!

On a separate note, went into Lush today and was amazed but overwhelmed! I’ve seen many of you posting about their products. Any specific recommendations?

With Lush, I really like their bubble bars if you are a bather. I cut them into 3 or 4 pieces, although you can be really extravagant and use it up at once. Also seconding their shower gels and I like their conditioners too.

Thank you so much for the “good luck”! Honestly it was an accident as far as starting work so fast. When I knew for sure we were moving I panicked about not having a job and started applying for stuff right away because I thought it would take a while to find one. To my surprise I had a lot of responses and within a couple of weeks someone made me a great offer. So yes, now I wish I’d waited a bit but at least I’ll get a paycheck fast ha! Plus will help get to know the area and meet people.

So late today but SOTD was Equistrius. It was a beautiful day, breezy and warm. We went to a nearby state forest and took a walk on a trail that winds around a lake. We spotted a Blue Heron and met a wonderful dad who took his three sons fishing. I was amused when he intoduced himself as Glen Miller. On the ride home, we stopped at a farm stand and bought excellent corn-on-the-cob, peaches, apples and garlic bulbs from a local farmer. I spent several hours doing chores as well but still a relaxing day.

Nearly at the end of our Oak Ridge North, Texas holiday – boo hoo! Having a wonderful time & have done a great deal of exploring – spent the day in Waco on Fri & in Montgomery yesterday. Tomorrow is just the two of us in local mall & Market Street areas, buying bits & pieces & final gifts to take home for friends shopping, but I will be in both Nordstrom & Sephora hopefully trying out what I can’t get at home & blagging samples! Also, depending on cost, may pick up some Eight & Bob original for a friend, even though we have an unspoken GBP 5.00 limit for holiday gifts & I have already filled that quota with gorgeous soap from the local farmers’ market on Sat & green tea bags from Trader Joe’s! Watch this space for updates…
