Thursday scent of the day 8/31

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2017 229 Comments

onions

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Almost-September! (Plus, happy birthday to Van Morrison.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Kaleidoscope, for the lettuce, for the rabbits.

Reminder: 9/1 we're doing Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! We're all about rabbits today. Wear a fragrance that will bring you good luck for September, or wear a fragrance that reminds you of rabbits, or wear whatever you picked this morning while saying "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" aloud. Or, refuse to participate in childish, superstitious practices — we'd like to know your scent of the day anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit

I have missed you all! Just returned last night from our vacation. We spent the last 4 days in Paris and it was HOT HOT HOT

I wearing Frescaessenza, I picked this up in Holland, only a travel spray , very zesty! Rabbits like that right? Do I get points!?

While traveling there I had some simple observations in both Holland and Paris (not saying they are good or bad, just observations) 1. People are not nearly as plugged into their devices and gadgets as here in the NYC, 2. I saw no one walking with a to go coffee cup, or eating and walking at the same time. 3. The only time I saw people in work out clothes is when they were actually working out.
Also, didn’t realize that in Holland its against the law to work in an office space without natural light.

Frescassenza was my only perfume purchase, picked up a huge Avene Thermal water in Paris. And, while in Paris I bought jeans. 1 pair. I am not a jeans person since I normally don’t like how they fit me. Most of my money went towards Mariage Freres tea.

        They adapted well.
They were a huge fans of the cheese and bread in France. Today they were up at 4 am and ready to start their day because of the jet lag. In Holland it was a bit easier since they had their cousins to play with. Paris was really really hot when we were there, but they didn’t care one bit.

In all the places that I have worked there had always been a dress code, except for Saturdays and Sundays, unless there are meetings scheduled for those days. I am very thankful for that, otherwise I think everyone would be wearing workout clothes most of the time.
I am a person glued to the phone, but I never eat or drink anything while walking. I find it very disturbing. I always like to sit and have some relaxing time, especially to savor my coffee!

Those observations are spot on. We are nutty here in the USA, and especially in big cities like NYC. Was just talking to one of the staff in my building who spent time in Turkey this summer and he had very similar observations. Personally I’m not a fan of living in my work out clothes.

Welcome home & glad it was a good trip!

I totally agree on the workout clothes, it’s pretty much what everyone wears where I live and I just don’t get it. Putting on my workout clothes is part of my ritual that gets me in the mindset to work hard, I can’t imagine putting them on and then just going to the grocery store or something. Also, I am particular about workout pants and the ones I have are expensive…so I don’t want them wearing out any faster than they already do!

Oops! I’m guilty of the work out clothes thing! But, I think that natural light rule is top notch. Working in a box with no external views will kill your soul.

Amen on the box killing your soul. I’ve worked in too many places with no windows (or large rooms where the peons – i.e., me! – had cubicles on the interior walls and the sunlight from the windows had to get past two rows to get to us).

      Welcome back, Mama!

      1) When I lived in Paris there was WIFI everywhere…and people were still not as plugged in as NYC or even London. When going out on dates men actually paid attention to me, instead of scrolling on a phone.

      2) Also, people will wear sneakers, but not atheleisure, and only very young men could get away with track suits.

      3) Coffee and tea are meant for sitting down, not chasing a bus.

I took back all of these things and incorporated them in my life here.

      Welcome back!

      @2
In The Netherlands you can catch quite a few people running around with take away coffee on train stations.
And lots of people here take a bike to work or to train stations. Kinda hard to hold a coffee cup while cycling :). And…..also, an office without coffee machine is unimaginable in The netherlands. No coffee machine? Dont expect people to work for you ;)

      @ observation 3
Yes for most folks in The netherlands workout clothes are for working out/sports :D

      A few exceptions:
      1. when you want that ‘street style’ look (but then track pants mostly get paired with a normal piece of clothing, like a bomber jacket, coat, blazer or nice cardigan).
      2. People from lower social classes tend to dress in workout or sweat/track pants, hoodies and running shoes when not working out.

So, to be clear: wearing sporty clothing at non sporty events can and will be considered kinda trashy by some folks.
Of course, no one blinks an eye when you wear sweatpants as a tourist or for more leisurely activities like a walk on the beach or a stroll in the park.

But for office, dining out, shopping, parties, and family visits, its a big NO, well at least for me it is ;)

I visited Vienna almost 20 years ago and I wanted to get a to go coffee for a train ride, and they didn’t understand what I was talking about at the café – I loved that!

I’ve seen pumpkin and christmas colored (and maybe shaped?) Peeps. I think I may have seen Peeps of different flavors, too, like Christmas peppermint flavored Peeps. Maybe also coconut flavored and chocolate dipped?

Peeps are one of my guilty pleasures, so I approve of your perfume choice!

They come in different shapes depending on the holiday (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July). You can find chicks, rabbits, pumpkins, black cats, ghosts, monsters, christmas trees, gingerbread men, snowmen, snow flakes. Some have fillings. I used to go crazy with all of them.

I very coldly culled my full bottles yesterday and I now have 5 bottles for the swap/freebie meet. I’ve been traveling with a decorative box I got at Michaels and my rule is all my perfumes must fit in the box without any spillover. I’m limiting myself to “loved” bottles and excluding “liked” bottles. So, the five scents looking for new homes are very much liked but just didn’t make the cut. My bottle of Au Dela arrived yesterday, so this is what prompted the intervention. This limitation will also ensure that I get the smallest bottle available and avoid any larger volume scents.

I’m chanelling Stevie Nicks today with Gypsy from Smell Bent. Alas, I’m missing the flowy clothes and long blond hair. Another one from this company that’s a home run with me. And, even more appreciative of their 4ml sizes.
    Happy Almost Friday Day!

Various small decants, travel sizes, and samples.

A couple of the SL scents barely made the cut. Their future is uncertain!

I got 7 4ml samples and so far I’ve tried Gypsy, which I mentioned above. Also really like Smoked Ambergris, which I’ve been wearing to bed the last couple of nights. I did a quick whiff of Tobacco Jasmine and the opening was a huge bomb of indolic jasmine. I do like jasmine but not that indolic and big. Did like the dry-down, though. Tea House was also a hit- a gourmand lemony vibe. Still have Hungry Hungry Hippies, One, Sunshine, and Pepper Ylnag to try. My favorite leather so far is Cuir Ottoman- a borderline animalic leather with a bit of iris thrown in to keep it civilized. Hie thee to a perfume shop to try Au Dela!

          florist’s fridge (opening a florist’s fridge)
          hot house (sexy green house)
one (old books + chai tea)
should have known better (a hike in big sur)
tea house (earl grey + lemon cake)

Wearing Lutens La Myrrhe today, and it smells more like a culinary addition to stewed rabbit, but I don’t think I should get credit for that as I wore it simply as it was cool enough to do so.
I want a bell jar of this, but that is not happening, so I enjoy my decant.

White rabbit…Alice in Wonderland…That go ask Alice song by Jefferson Airplane…scene in Handmaids Tale where she’s going “what the….”.

My most “what the….” scent (both in terms of scent itself and what was I thinking when I bought it-blind of course!!) is L’Artisan Amour Nocturne. It is still hot here in the desert so maybe I’ll like it better today than I did in the winter. Let’s hope, or scrubbing may be in order!

Yes, the series on Hulu. Hmmm I don’t want to spoil for anyone still watching, but there is a scene in which they have that Jefferson Airplane song playing and it is a pretty prominent part of creating the emotion of the scene.

Oh here you go, I think this should be ok to say. Offred (sp? Sorry, haven’t read the book!) has an unexpected and very surprising outing. Thus the “what the heck is going on?” emotion and sense of danger.

I am happy to report it’s actually performing very nicely!! The heat is dampening the metallic note that I find a bit disturbing (and seems so prominent when I sniff the bottle), but gives just enough edge to the caramel. I spritzed lightly on just my forearms–any more than that and it could potentially be overwhelming, for sure.

Trying another new scent, this one by Penhaligan from their Portrait’s collection: Yasmine
This is basically vanilla and oud on me, nice, but not very unique. It’s supposed to have coffee in the opening? Can’t smell it. I’d take a travel spray of this if they ever offered one. Apparently the Portrait’s line is doing fantastically well for the co.

The closest I can come to relating my SOTweek, Ambre Russe, is that I’ve generally been looking out the window at a bunny when I’ve sprayed it. Does that count? I have always loved AR and have discovered that it works in the heat if sprayed on the ankles. Now I’m really kicking myself for not springing for one of the older bottles. I’ve heard the newer formula is quite different and not as good?

Really? I didn’t even know it had been reformulated! I have CF in the new packaging which is much nicer in person than a photo would lead you to believe, but didn’t know reformulation occurred during this change. Bummer!

I don’t know for sure, but I’ve read in a few places that the newer one was harsher and less complex. I’m really quite relieved to hear that you have and enjoy the redesigned bottle. I’ll probably spring for one soon and hope that any reported differences are due to perfumista paranoia. I can’t imagine not liking AR.

Got to our destination safely just after midnight – glorious sunshine & very warm here in Oak Ridge North – will no doubt be out & about a little later & see how things are in the wider surrounding area.

My SOTD is Mon Jasmin Noir (again borrowed from my mom’s collection). It’s got a sharp note I’m not fond of, not sure what that is. But maybe after more dry down time it will settle down some. The jasmine is nice and I find a strong pepper element. Also it’s pretty sweet. Not sure it’s for every day.

Yesterday after complaining about how weak Eau Claire des Merveilles was on me, I got a compliment when I went to the local library and someone said “Oh my YOU smell nice!”–so the scent apparently had more projection than I realized!

SOTD Aroma M Geisha Blanche which I usually only wear after an evening shower so that I *smell* freshly showered. It also transfers to my sheets so they smell freshly washed in the morning. I wasn’t feeling perfumey today so it’s working as a nice background scent.
I met a friend on the Lower East Side last eve and got there a little early so stopped in briefly at Cire Trudon to sniff their new perfumes. I liked Bruma (iris) and quite liked Mortel (incense). The discovery set isn’t a bad deal, especially as a split-5xp10ml travel sprays for $110. Not sure I *need* any of them, though.

I like Tocca Florence, and nearly bought the hair mist, which is a better way to wear the scent in the spring/summer time. (you can wear it on your skin as well as hair, it’s light, but as heat rises the scent gently radiates.)

    SotD is Ormonde Woman

Smelled Twilly from a blotter, it was not very special, but at least is did not smell like a fruity sugary candy, like most other designer fragrances targeted at younger women (blah blah something Paris by YSL, that was just yuck).
I was not in the mood to try it on skin. Maybe later.

The bottle and packaging are lovely. But my financial resources are not endlesss, so buying a perfume just for the looks of it is against my rules.

Another rule I made for myself a few months ago: NO blind buys.
I made that mistake three times now…not going to be a fourth time soon I hope, no matter how cheap.

OJ Woman is still on my try list, though I hear it’s strange and lovely.
I haven’t seen Twilly in our retailers yet.
I’m with you on blind buys! I’ve had too many be regrets. I have to try on the scent several different times and love it before I’ll buy. :)

OJ is lovely! And my husband agreed this evening (“you smell so good, what are you wearing?”)

I have to experience at least three or four wearings I am really thrilled about before i will even start to consider a buy.

And even then, I may put a buy on hold, because…I need something from another genre first…or its too expensive….or I’d rather spend my money on samples/small decants because i like to explore more brands and genres, or whatever…)
This method works for me so far.
        :)

I have a sample of OJ Woman and really like it – it is on my ever evolving “get more” list

What were your 3 blind buy regrets? And, did you buy more blind but others worked out?

I need to stop buying things I like just because they are$15-$30 and save up for something I will love

            All cheapies:

Bvlgari Black (i never wear it, turns into a flat plasticky vanilla on my skin, i hardly get that tea note or leather)

            Ophelia, by heeley
It was very cheap, and it is lovely (very polite and romantic white flowers), and i do wear it once i a while, but i wish i saved the money for a real love (this is just a big like..oh and a huge bottle as well haha)

Dame perfumery soliflore Narcissus, its a great scent, really, but i never wear it. So there you go…waste of money

Not a blind buy, but an impulse buy after just one wearing from a sample: Ostara

    Hello all-

    1) Am in Molinard Jasmine. It is the end of August and I want to wear this lovely scent several more times before I box it away for next summer.

    2) I have a visitor from Japan coming to stay and of course, I am unprepared! At least I have a air mattress and pillows, so there is that. The house is clean BUT there is no food in the cupboard! Argh! We will be attending a few parties this weekend, so hopefully that makes up for it.

    3) Homemade cold brew coffee, green juice and brioche roll for breakfast. Lots of work to do, so need good clean fuel.

Last night was Fumerie’s swap and it was lovely. Someone brought a bottle of Chanel Gabrielle, so I got to smell it. It was fine, I thought it smelled very youthful, but mostly I was taken aback by the bottle. The hefty Chanel “feel” is gone. The glass is much thinner, the bottle much lighter. I didn’t care for it. On the other hand, I found out there is a Portland Sniffa coming up in October, and I swapped my House of Matriarch Devotion for a scent I’d never heard of—Maison des Reves’s Mousse au Café. It starts out with a lovely bitter coffee note, and then cream comes in, and a touch of sweetness. It ends up smelling like a latte on me, quite nice. Its connection to rabbits is so convoluted and illogical that I won’t bore you with it.

So excited that I am participating today with L’Artisan Fleur de Carotte! Someone mentioned I Love Carottes yesterday, which reminded me that I had a sample of this somewhere. It must have been a freebie with a swap ages ago, since I haven’t swapped in a long time. There isn’t much to this, which is probably why I couldn’t find much about it online. It’s a little fresh and a little sweet and then it is gone. Guess I’ll douse myself with the rest of the sample and top off with something else shortly!

Smell Bent Hot House for the start of spring. I haven’t seen any rabbits up on the hill for a While which I am putting down to the poison drop they did last Christmas ( to deal with TB infected possums) or the big rain fall in winter which was followed by very cold temperatures ( wet sick animals). Normally at this time of year I would see 5 or so a walk. The ferns are all just coming up and are perfect koru shapes ( tight spirals) and luminous green.

Good morning. I’m running late, very, very late, and I do not care, not a jot nor a tittle. I could be going to work right now, but instead, I’m watching the kittens play with their toys. Eric has the Pink Fur of Destiny, and he’s growling like a tiger if anyone comes near it. He hasn’t noticed that the other two don’t want it. Awww, sweeti…Titus has one end of the blanket from their box, and Alexander has the other. Between them, they are towing it all over the house, fighting it, rolling in it, using it as cover to leap out and attack Eric….it’s a great game. It’s also big and heavy, about a metre by .75, double layered with fleece and a quilted front, so goodness only knows why dragging it out of the box and all around and about is such a good game. When I’ve finished this cup of tea, I’m going to have a fourth (yes, indeed, a fourth: I’m going to make a new pot) and keep on watching them. You may deduce from this behaviour that I an utterly over work, and you would be completely right. Australia next week, then 10 weeks more. I can cope with anything for ten weeks!

So, it’s our Friday, and I need to Rabbit. I’m bereft of imagination at the moment, but I offer this: my rabbit has emerged from the woods at the edge of the front lawn at Bel Respiro. It pauses to nibble the grass under a sandalwood tree (the only one on mainland Europe), surveys the damp glory of the iris flowers as they open in the post-dawn light, ponders some delicate green foliage in a stone urn and wonders why rosemary isn’t better for a bunny to eat, then lopes off towards more likely edible rewards in the kitchen garden. Please may I have a B-/C+ for making an effort? Or at least a C-?

Be well, all. Let’s leave Awful August behind in the archives of experience and face forward into Super September!

The wonderkittens are certainly earning their keep as the entertaining little loves they most truly are. They are fortunate to have you, and we are lucky to read of their exploits.

An A+ to you and Bel Respiro. Now I want to go live there with that rabbit. Good-bye August, and yes yes yes to the fragrant future.

tl;dr sotd = Obsession for Men, still great!
ck one and ck2 are interesting but not for me.

I was unscented this morning in anticipation of an appointment at my eye doctor. She is truly wonderful, and her twin sister is an amazing eye surgeon. Together they have a deservedly successful practice. They do a doctor to doctor teaching, supply, and service trip to North Korea for one week each year. They are super heroes in my eyes, must insert winky face here! ;)

As I entered the medical building’s empty elevator I noticed someone’s perfume was still wafting. One of my doctor’s staff entered the elevator too. When I asked could he smell the perfume, he said he hadn’t noticed it until that moment. He commented that he was grateful when someone smelled nice in the office, but dreaded a few overly perfumed regular patients.

On the way home I stopped off at Kohl’s where there was a shelf displaying ck one, ck one gold, ck2, and Obsession for Men. I spritzed them all. The ck2 bottle is cool, looks like the Cartier L’envol ampoule. If I were a bottle collector I would get one for sure. The ck scents never seem to click for me, though they do smell great straight from the bottle.

BUT I was delighted to be reminded how weak-in-the-knees fabulous Obsession for Men was and still is. It’s like Old Spice + more more more. Soooo gooooood.

I’ve only been to a Kohl’s once, pre-perfumista. I have the impression that their selection is one rung above Sears with the differentiator being you can try on the perfumes.

Sounds about right, we used to go to Sears to buy high-school-dress-code-required khakis for my daughter. But the Lands End/Sears thing seems to have gone off the rails and their supply is lousy, so now we go to Kohls for school clothes. Today I had to return a pair of khakis my daughter decided did not fit just right.

Kohls has fragrances from Calvin Klein, Versace, Elizabeth Arden (lots of the greentea scents), Vera Wang, Donna Karan, and so on. It is very nice that the store near me has about 100 tester bottles and nobody hovering over them while I sniff around for something new.

SOTD is Huitieme Art “Ciel d’Airain”.

Notes are fruity notes, olive, pear wood and amber.

Supposedly the scent of taking shelter under a pear tree in an orchard as rain threatens. On me it first smelt like coconut, and on second application of fig. That’s some orchard. :^)

Matching rabbit for this perfume: Hazel from Watership Down (who will be surprised to find a coconut palm in the copse).

Upgraded my web browser this afternoon, and have had one weird thing happen so far. I will keep an eye on things to see if any other funny business occurs. SOTD = Soivohle’s Dog Star Cologne. Dame Desert Rose on one arm, Odin Milieu Rosa on the other. It is really too bad that I’ve enforced a more strict (ie, actual) no-buy, or I’d be hard pressed to avoid a 10-ml decant or travel spray of MR (do they make those?). Who knows, maybe by some miracle, someone will want to swap some at the upcoming swapmeet :)

Dear friends, I’ve now sunk about $250 into my homemade body product project. Every time I come up with an idea, I discover I need another purchase to make the project viable. I never set out to make a pile of money; it started as a way to use up the excess herbs in my balcony garden. Now I’m running around buying essential oils and carrier oils and antioxidant oils and jars and labels. This is a little awful and crazy. I’ve decided to sell my things until I break even, and I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed that my things will be good enough and cute enough for some people to buy, despite the insurmountable number of products already out there. Sigh. This wasn’t that smart.

At least I’ll have so many presents for friends. And if, by some miracle, I turn a profit, I’ve decided to put it towards MORE PERFUME!!! This is just an all-around poorly thought-out plan.

I did exactly the same thing about 15 years ago. I made soap, lotion, creams, scrubs, and eo mixtures. Everything needed another antioxidant, preservative, or special packaging. It got to where it took up too much space and money. I, my friends, my relatives, heck, even the neighbors had soap and body products galore. I never sold any (my CA town had stringent regulations) and finally gave everything away except my favorite soaps. Good luck with selling yours, I hope you make lots of perfume money.

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar

Oversprayed …because I can and I love it!

It was another crazy busy day and I am super annoyed at some people. Also, when I was standing in line at Chipotle the woman behind me kept bumping into me. Twice with her cell phone and the next time with just her body. If she had bumped me a 4th time, I would have taken a big step back and deliberately stepped into her and say, oh I’m so sorry I did not see you standing behind me!

    Moving on

    Commuting Woes No. 390:

Another two-fer! I was sandwiched between a snoozer using me as a pillow (and I had to nudge him off) and a fidgeter who insisted on sitting diagonally, reading a newspaper and checking something on his mobile device. I had to ekbow him twice to catch his attention.
