Tuesday scent of the day 8/29

Posted by Robin on 29 August 2017 233 Comments

Happy Tuesday! NPR has another list of charities working to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. (Teapot freaks might also want to check out the images from the Texas Teapot Tournament, held every year at the Clay Arts Museum and Education in Houston.) What fragrance are you wearing?

It's another testing day for me. Will I ever catch up? I've started off with a tiny spritz of Amouage Blossom Love.

Reminder: 9/1 we're doing Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! We're all about rabbits today. Wear a fragrance that will bring you good luck for September, or wear a fragrance that reminds you of rabbits, or wear whatever you picked this morning while saying "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" aloud. Or, refuse to participate in childish, superstitious practices — we'd like to know your scent of the day anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Serax Cement teapot is sold out at Selfridges, but you can find out where to buy one at the Serax website. It runs about €188. It was designed by Frédérick Gautier, and you can read about him at Concrete futures: French artist-designer Frédérick Gautier sets his sights on LA at Wallpaper.

Another charity I read about today is Greater Good – transporting animals out of areas affected by Harvey. https://give.greatergood.org/campaign/hurricane-harvey-animal-rescue/c142955

I am wearing PG25 Indochine today. Not directly related to rabbits but soft and cuddly.

I can’t decide if I love that teapot or hate it! I don’t want to drink tea out of it, that’s for sure, but I might want it for some other unknown purpose.

Agree! I’d have to see the inside of it before I’d actually use it as a teapot. :)

If you go to the website, you can see the matching plates / trays are glazed on the inside. I’m assuming the teapot is as well (?)

Cool and rainy today. I’m in a bit of Numero 5 edp which happens to be the most enjoyable part of this Tuesday’s routine meeting. They did bring in cupcakes and other sweets to welcome some new staff and I’m trying to resist since nothing good ever comes of a sugar binge before proper food. I keep learning that over and over again.

No. 5 is an excellent antidote for a routine meeting.

I try to avoid sweets before 12 noon or after 8 pm. It helps me feel better all day and sleep better at night.

It is a lovely protective cloud. I relegate sweets to later night since I crash from sugar about an hour later.

DC’s third and tallest corpse flower is wide open today!

    https://www.usbg.gov/three-corpse-flower-blooms-usbg

I went last night when it was about half open and got to smell it. It smells like the unpleasant side of cooked (or maybe rotten) cabbage, brussels sprouts, and garlic; or maybe like the dankest farts. Which makes sense because, as the staff explained, the scent is composed of sulfur compounds.

The nose does adapt and cease to notice it (at least at the levels it had reached last night). Whenever I reentered after visiting one of the other rooms for awhile, I could smell it again. Although it didn’t smell as bad as a dead animal while I was there, there was something deeply disturbing about the smell.

Many people were saying it wasn’t as bad as they had expected. I think it may get worse during the night. I’ve certainly seen people reacting more unfavorably in videos from other sites.

I’m planning to go back this afternoon to see it again in natural light. There were no lines last night, and I’m hoping lines won’t be long today because of the rainy weather and so many people being out of town at this time of year.

SOTD is Parfumerie Generale “PG14 Iris Oriental”.

Notes are fig honey, iris, vanilla, cardamom, olibanum and woody notes.

I thought it smelt of chocolate when I put it on first – I guess it’s a misreading of the fig and honey, somehow. It’s nice, but really struggles to last on my skin today as I’m working in a sweltering hot room.

Found my bottle of JM Vetyver so I could compare it to Phlur’s Greylocke (which I could still detect on my skin this morning – great longevity!). The JM has definitely gone off a bit in it’s old age. Its vetiver is softer and the overall effect is much quieter than Greylocke’s – to be expected with any JM. It will probably be undetectable by lunch. I was hoping the JM, of which I own a good 20 mls still, would satisfy my newly-minted vetiver needs and dispel any desire to own a FB of Greylocke. I’m beginning to have doubts.

Yes, Greylocke lasts forever (even on my scent eating skin) and it is STILL on my bathrobe from a few days ago. I really like it, and I am not a huge fan of vetiver…but this one pushes all the right buttons on me…definitely full bottle worthy…most definitely…..plus it is 20 dollars off with the sampler purchase…so that is practically free :)

and you know there is something in Greylocke that makes it chewy and almost gourmandish for me which is why I find it addictive…maybe the apple note? do you feel that way as well?

maybe gourmand is the wrong word but there is something mouth watering about it…what’s that word? unami? it has this savory chewy quality to it that I am really loving…

Thank you for the link for donations in Houston. I am not at home now since I have been up north visiting my mom. The situation there is just terrible. I have friends who have no power, no water, or sewage backing up, one friend rescued a lot of elderly people in his boat, of course many people are flooded. Reports from my house are that it has some roof leaks but is not flooded and the cats are OK.
Please also consider donating to this fine group I have volunteered for, Friends for Life. They have a big setup downtown at the convention centre with dog and cat food, beds for animals, a veterinary team, and more. It’s a huge comfort to people when they can have their pets with them there and get help for them. Many pets too are very stressed out. They have also been drenched and swum through high water or been rescued even in dump trucks. One donor will match all donations up to $15,000 now. This money goes straight to the animals in need.

    Hi NST family!
Time for me to check out, as I will be leaving on summer holidays tomorrow. I’m looking forward to spending 2 weeks in Italy.

SotD was Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris. I love it so much.

Before I get to Milan I will be 8 hours in transit, need a good SotD. Any suggestions for a good bus ride & a flight? Was thinking Hermes Le Jardin de Monsieur Li.

I like your choice. Le Jardin de Monsieur Li is lovely and stays close to the skin. An interesting scent to travel with, and it’s unlikely to bother people around you. However, I don’t think it will last 8 hours.

Wearing Chene, which I thought was rabbit-y because pet rabbits . . . live in cages with cedar shavings? Possibly I was thinking of hamsters. Anyway, I had a small sample of Chene several years back and loved it, but this new decant smells harsher and less complex to me. Glad I sampled again before buying a fb.

The drydown is more in line with what I remembered, so maybe my own taste changed more than Chene, as I am still not loving it. Plus, it’s making me a bit sneezy. Money saved . . .

Or, maybe it is a decant from an even older bottle and the top notes have degraded?? I worry about making decisions based on decants. That said, the new bottles are reportedly not as good as the old.

I ponder the influence of luck sometimes. Luck is not a big factor in my life, either; I get where I go by hard work, and by putting one foot in front of the other when a tough patch comes along. My brother, on the other hand, is endlessly lucky. If there’s a door prize, he’ll win it. If someone can get him out of the jam he’s gotten himself into, it’ll happen. Relying on luck works for him, but for the folks around him: not so much. Seems to me that luck is overrated.

Hope you enjoy your day :)

I do hope it’s a better day for many that have been affected by Harvey. As a doer I wish I could be there to help in some way.

I’ve got Bottega Veneta original on one arm and the new Eau de Velours on the other. The opening of Velours has a juicy plum note that’s very nice, and rose vs. the jasmine of the original, but overall they both smell pretty much the same after some time; the patch and leather both reign ultimately. Would love to see a review of this new one on NST!

Tomorrow I’m breaking out my new bottle of Martin Margiela “A Promenade in the Gardens” for our travel from the north east of Scotland to Houston…actually this morning we rescheduled to go via Amsterdam/Minneapolis/Dallas instead of the originally planned Aberdeen/Paris/Houston as the other option was to cancel completely 7 lose out financially. Our wonderful host, who is not at work all week due to what’s happening over there, suggested yesterday when we spoke that we try to get to Dallas & he would pick up up, bless him! So he will have to drive the 230 or so miles from their home north of Houston to DFW airport, pick us up, then pretty much turn around & drive straight back. Thankfully our friends’ location has not been adversely affected at all, & everything planned for this visit is in the local area or even further north. From the news footage we’re getting here the situation in the greater Houston area is dire, & it looks like Louisiana is in for it next.

Our weather has turned the corner into fall (yay!) I love the feeling of the air outside. SOTD is lovely Cuir de Lancome.

Heard from a college roomie who lives near Houston, and she is fine. Minor flooding in her area, but her house is dry and her family is safe.

Gaze started classes yesterday and even called me yesterday to discuss choosing textbooks at the university bookstore vs via Amazon or renting. I was surprised to hear from him so soon – I thought he’d still be settling in to the new class schedule, but apparently he had enough time before regimental band practice to call. This is a picture of him in last Friday’s commando-crawl race, from the Commandant’s Facebook page:

Go for amazon and rent…I think college students get free amazon prime for six months which means their books are guaranteed delivery in 2 or 3 days…..and I think free shipping….you just have to make sure that you mail the books back in time!

We checked each title individually – two books were about the same price in either spot (but he’d have to wait 14 days for them to show up via Amazon since they’re not in current production), and one was available used-very-good on Amazon at 30% of the bookstore price.

Rental would make sense for classes outside the major, I think, but these were for classes in his area of study so he expects to use them again.

Mitsouko for a gray, cool, rainy day that seems to be fall rather than summer. Every year when I come back to Mitsouko I have mixed feelings. I have always had a like(not love)-hate relationship with it no matter the version, reformulation, or if it is vintage. This morning after having 2 sprays the top notes were amazing. One hour later I was regretting badly to be wearing it. Now 7 hours later, I am enjoying it greatly. I do not know if someday I will understand it. So many times I have been ready to get rid of it, but…..

Hermes Rhubarb today for no reason other than it’s still hot here and rhubarb is such a cool smell. Rabbits would eat rhubarb leaves, wouldn’t they?

Our Red Cross is stretched thin–15 wildfires across the state plus the need for volunteers in Houston. I’ll check with my district supervisor about where I’m needed most.

I am in Lalique’s Rose Royale 1935 today.

It reminds me of my grandmother. Not sure if it was a perfume she wore, her house or what but it is evocative of her and thus comforting to me.

The more I think about it…there might be some 1980s Aqua Net accord… ????

Inspired by Victoria’s article yesterday (Bois de Jasmin), I’m wearing Carnal Flower. It’s going to be a hot day, so this should hold up well. I walked to work this morning and the humidity was 77% ugh.

Also, I think I’m participating in the community project by default because of my username. ????

No. 5 Eau Premiere for me today from a decant I made off my sister’s bottle. She let me take some because she vastly prefers the original and has a big bottle of that. No. 5 has never done much for me, so I decided to try the flanker. I’m liking it better after an hour than at first. It has seemed to get stronger and less powdery.

I’m quite impressed by the lasting power off two spritzes. I was always (am) a No. 19 gal, although I also wore No. 22 briefly about 30 or more years ago. Never No. 5, oddly enough.

The very first leaves on our maple trees have begun to unfurl. They are tiny, like bright apple-green bird claws at this stage. It always seems like a special time of year…all this new growth that creeps up around you, and only happens once a year. It must be pretty cool to be a tree. It’s still early – the morepork (owl) is outside and I’ll head off with the dogs when the sun rises. Just sprayed Philosophy Celebrate Grace which was a gift…a floral musk with a mix of generic flowers but pretty. Hope all the rain, wind, smoke and traffic goes easy on everyone today.

Lonesome Rider on this overcast day for me! The scent of a rabbit rabbit rabbit roasting on a spit over a fire pit, perhaps. Oh dear.

Inspired by ChocolateMarzipan8, I’ve started turning all the herbs and flowers in my balcony garden into body products! Infused oils and salt scrubs are all I’ve made so far. Now I’ve got piles of jars and salts and oils and bottles and cute little tags, and really shockingly few friends who like froofy body products. I’m thinking of opening up an Etsy shop to sell them. I’ve been thinking up overwrought copy for days. Right now, I’ve got hand-mixed, lovingly grown, and hyper-locally sourced (about 10 feet from where I sleep). Any other ideas?

Organic, nonGMO, gluten and cruelty free, vegan, limited edition, (very) small batch, specially macerated during the solar eclipse for added healing benefits…
Yes, or you can say “hand-clipped”?
(I never really got the “hand-dipped” catch for ice cream places. What are the other options, really?)

I LOVE your suggestions!! The solar eclipse thing is extra fun. I’ve been looking through Etsy at similar products to figure out pricing for my products, and I’m shocked at the number of crystal-infused oils. Do you think they actually bothered sticking an amethyst crystal in there, or do you think they are just claiming to? Anyway, the question is how to attract the people who like that kind of silliness without alienating everyone else :)

Honestly, I was just joking, but I guess if you put a happy face emoji at the end of all your claims, people can take that any way they want. I’m thinking part serious-the products are nice and are handmade, cruelty free etc., and part tongue and cheek with regards to kooky claims. I, personally appreciate that kind of humor so I’d be your target customer!
Also, probably doesn’t really matter if they put the crystal in or not? I doubt that crystals are oil soluble unless it’s been sitting in there for centuries or something so you’re probably just buying oil either way.

          What exactly did you make?

I’ve made infused oils of basil, thyme, cilantro, rosemary, kieffer lime leaves and blossoms, and tomato leaves, and plan to do mint soon. I’ve made herbed salt combos of the same. I’ve also bought rose and amber oils to add in. I’m doing mixtures that I think sound nice (basil and lime, rose and rosemary, mint and vanilla, etc.). I will also soon make a coffee scrub, which I’ve made and enjoyed in the past!

I totally agree that oil pre and post amethyst will be exactly the same (unless the amethyst wasn’t clean). That’s why I wonder if they bother staying true to their claims! I could just claim my oils were crystal infused without actually doing anything; who would EVER know?

When Chock Full O’Nuts had physical locations, one bit of advertising claimed that their food was never touched by human hands. This led to much speculation among my friends as to who or what was making the sandwiches and the donuts.

    SOTD is Alaïa.

Was alerted last evening by the next-door neighbor to the fact there were javelina in my front yard (i.e., for a viewing opportunity). Went out to look at them up close as they meandered around munching on the agave. Some of them were hidden from view around the corner of the house and by the increasing darkness, so it wasn’t until they all finally wandered off that you could see that there were at least 8 of them, including 3 little babies! Awesome.

I thought that today’s picture was for some kind of really cool birdhouse until I read the caption. I’ve briefly postponed Patchouli week for a comfort scent… the gloomy weather kind of called for it. Plus I noticed some leaves starting to change color in my neighborhood this morning. So SOTD = Bottega Veneta EdP. It called out to me, and what kind of perfume enthusiast ignores that?
