Monday scent of the day 8/28

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2017 268 Comments

Lobby Ceiling, City Hall, Houston

It's another Monday, plus Bow Tie Day, and here is the Houston Chronicle's article on How to help victims of the Texas storm. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still commando but I'm trying out Ineke Idyllwild on a blotter.

Reminder: 9/1 we're doing Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! We're all about rabbits today. Wear a fragrance that will bring you good luck for September, or wear a fragrance that reminds you of rabbits, or wear whatever you picked this morning while saying "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" aloud. Or, refuse to participate in childish, superstitious practices — we'd like to know your scent of the day anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My sympathy to all who suffered from the storm.

For this week’s project, I chose Amouage Fate. (The connection is luck and superstition.) This is interesting. Mostly sweet oriental (incense, vanilla, resins, leather), but with a chypre accord. I like it, but I think that maybe it’s a bit too sweet. Still an excellent fragrance for fall. (And today it feels like autumn is already here.)

I never quite understood the love for vetiver…until now…

woke up this morning to the drydown of Phlur’s Greylocke on my bathrobe…utterly addictive (chewy is another word that comes to mind) so that is what I am wearing today…and probably will for the rest of the week…the Phlur white bottles remind me of a white rabbit…so it also kinda fits the week’s theme….yeah, I know, very loose interpretation.

and Robin, I am curious on your thoughts about Idylwilde.

I promise to report back later in the week, or maybe next — wearing bunch of stuff right now and all I can say is good, and nice fit with the California theme.

OMG twin! Received my Phlur samples over the weekend. Did a small test of Olmsted & Vaux and was not smitten (smells like one of the scents I use in my Lampe Berger). Greylocke is winning me over though! Such vetiver. Reminds me of Jo Malone’s vetiver that I believe is now d/c (I still have some – must dig it out for a comparison). Can I live without a FB? That is the question.

Ha! Ha! And while I loved Olmsted & Vaux I was expecting to not love Greylocke but have been on a quest for a vetiver I CAN love…I think I have found it!!! I have been watching lots of youtube videos on the Phlur line and Redolessence says that Greylocke is like a hipper Guerlain Vetiver (which is more restrained)…I remember liking the d/c Jo Malone Vetiver but it has been years since I smelled it….but there is something in the Greylocke (maybe pine or some other sap) that just makes this utterly addictive…I cannot stop sniffing my wrist!!!!

What was the third Phlur you got?

In case anyone is interested….and I am in awe of his fragrance collection in the background!!! Wow!

It is pine that is in there as well…and I was laughing at the picture he gave as a visual for someone wearing Greylocke for I am so far from that visual-LOL! But I like that Greylocke has an edginess to it for me as I want to come out of my comfort zone with fragrances and not necessarily wear what I think I should be wearing based on my age, gender and body type, if that makes any sense.

and you must all know now that I am obsessed with this line (sorry NST peeps but you should be used to it by now after having to put up with my Dame Perfumery and Berdoues Cologne Grand Cru obsessions-LOL!)

My Phlur sampler arrived now. I sprayed each in the air to get a feel, and it might be Hepcat that I like the most. Have my little cards to follow along – looks like I’ll get 8 hours with Hepcat.

            28 August 2017 at 4:52 pm

Hepcat is a powerhouse so yeah, I am not surprised eight hours! I am saving that one for cooler weather…it also has vetiver in it so I am surprised that I like it so much!

Siano is the third. Haven’t tried it at all yet. Worried it might not be work-friendly based on the the description.

I have to say Phlur lost points with me for their creepy bot who tracked me down on Facebook. Apparently I gave permission (probably by not checking a box I failed to notice), but I found it rather off-putting.

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            28 August 2017 at 4:51 pm

yes, Siano is a strange one…might not be work friendly…I like it as it reminds me of a cross between Pulp and original Calyx…but it may not be for everyone…

yikes! sorry to hear about the cyber stalking! I don’t have facebook and I do tend to read all things as well as clear my history whenever I make purchases or do anything important on the computer.

Thanks, Texas NSTers, for checking in. Glad to hear you are OK.

We had 21 inches of rain in 24 hours a few years back with TS Fay, and I really feel for you who are coping with that and for those who are coping with all the damage from the winds. Gotta say, that rain with Fay was unrelenting downpour after unrelenting downpour, and we felt so helpless because there was nothing we could do. Fortunately, the flooding here didn’t endanger anyone’s life, but psychologically it was really tough.

On to a brighter subject, SOTD is the beautiful Seville l’Aube. And per yesterday’s discussion, I’ve culled 12 bottles from the collection and they’re going to the women’s shelter tomorrow.

Today is baby Jack’s first day of school. I put him on the bus a little over an hour ago…I’m still crying on and off. I can’t think of any scent appropriate for how I’m feeling, but I’ll likely put on Le Parfum de Therese when I get out of the shower since it’s new and I’m still enjoying overspraying it.

Slightly related…we returned home from vacation Saturday night to find a huge mess in the kitchen. A vintage aerosol container of Revlon Intimate that I’d been using as a decoration had exploded. It took out the light on the ceiling, left a six inch gouge in the drywall, and coated everything with dark, old perfume oil and rust. And when I say everything, I mean everything – windows, curtains, cabinets, counters, floor, appliances, dishes, candles,…So far, I’ve tried goo gone, dawn soap, lemon juice, Lysol all purpose cleaner, windex, and Mr. Clean magic sponges. I’m making a little progress, but nothing is doing the trick alone. (The sponges work best, but I’d need about 2000 to finish the job.) If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears.

      Awww, Mama. Hugs to you.
And how bizarre! Did it get too hot or something? So sorry that happened! No cleaning advise other than what you’ve tried except maybe steam? My melt the hardened oils? Careful of the Magic Sponges on the walls if they’re painted. I ruined some walls with those trying to get out some stains. It seems to also remove the paint!

I assume it was too hot and got hit with the sun in just the right spot. It has been in the same spot for about five years. I’ve turned the air conditioning off before with no problem, something must’ve aligned perfectly this time.

I will try the steam. (I’ll try anything at this point.) And I’ll be careful with the sponges, but if I don’t start making better progress we’ll have to paint anyway. It’s bad. Really bad. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, magic erasers are like micro graters. Very cool and great for brightening hard surfaces, but they will take off paint or printed designs.

Oh my goodness, what a mess! Lacquer thinner from the hardware store will take anything off but you have to have windows open and good ventilation and don’t use on painted surfaces, it’s serious stuff, you might be better off with magic sponges :(

Thank you. He just turned three, everything is happening a little too fast. He was really excited and didn’t have any problems getting on the bus. I, on the other hand…I hope I do better next year. Luckily the school called about something unrelated and told me he’s doing really well. They said there were no criers on his bus today, which is amazing for a whole bus of special needs three and four year olds!

Funny you should mention that. Mr. Lucy reached out to all of his Facebook friends yesterday to see if anyone knew of a magical solution. Our insurance agent contacted us within an hour! We just have to decide if it’s worth the deductible or if we can do it ourselves. I took lots of pictures before I attempted cleaning just in case. I will try the scrubbing bubbles, thank you.

(We’re finding broken glass and sprayed sludge about 25 feet away.). The kitchen was/is pretty much unuseable. I’m currently in my procrastination panties, the big girl ones are next. :)

Lucy, so sorry for your mess. My hubs uses lighter fluid to remove sticky stuff. It works much better than GooGone, but the smell is unpleasant; it has other downsides – it’s flammable and probably gives off toxic fumes. Hope you find something that works and isn’t toxic.

Wearing FM Une Fleur de Cassie. I am really in love with this perfume. (Hajusuuri, thanks again). I am spraying it very lightly to make my decant last long. I will need a replacement when it is finished.

I finally placed an order of D600 as my promotion gift. Thanks Lucas, CM8 and Hajusuuri for your recommendation a couple of months ago. It was fb worthy.
My husband surprised me yesterday with a fb of ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette. So my fb perfume shopping it is over for a while. I will concentrate now on whatever I have and finish decants and samples.

Beautiful photo, which we need today!

Continuing to watch the unfolding events in Texas is heartbreaking. I just about lost it when they showed the photo of the elderly nursing home residents up to their waist in water. But also so heartwarming to see people (and their pets!!) being rescued by all the wonderful volunteers who dontate time, sweat, boats, trucks, food, etc to those in need. Kudos to everyone who is helping near and far!

On a perfume note, I did a bad, bad thing yesterday. After 3 horrendous days at work and all the Texas news, I was feeling lower than a snakes belly and decided, off the emotional cuff, to order a bottle of BF Au Dela Narcisse. I didn’t even try to rationalize it!

Yep, it’s a done deal and I’m not sorry! Off for a rejuvenating and restorative bike ride! A special hug goes out to all the NST Texas people! ????

First day of school, and my daughters first year of highschool. Feeling a bit melancholy today. Trying for the second time, Cafe Tuberosa. I’m liking it better today, probably because the first time I tried it in the store with other scents I was testing. If I could find it in a travel spray, I think I would get it. Thoughts and prayers for all those effected by the hurricane.

Most of Austin only got about 7″ of rain total and it came down pretty slowly. The usual low water crossings came up but I don’t know of any serious local flooding. I know the media was predicting over a foot of rain, but everyone I’ve talked to from outlying areas reported about the same as we did.

At some point, I just tell myself that a credit card will fix anything forgotten.

My husband is a terrible packer. So far on various trips he has forgotten: the pants for his tuxedo for a formal wedding (plain black pants fixed that problem); one shoe (credit card); his toilet kit (credit card)… for a month-long trip to Italy, he packed only enough shirts and socks for 4 days (credit card)…

I always make sure *I* have our tickets and passports :)

I somehow managed to pack only about half as many clothes as I needed the last two trips I’ve been on. Both times I got home and found the other half of the clothes I intended to bring sitting in a neat stack in my closet, where I put them down when my toddler interrupted my packing. So my advice is to banish everyone from your presence when you get to packing.

Yes! I got distracted last time I was packing and left my jacket and scarf behind. I started crying when I realized I was without. Fortunately, my dad was able to find them and bring them to me, as he arrived a few days later. I get distracted really easily and completely lose my train of thought, and as I was getting in the car I said, “I feel like I’m forgetting something,” about 4 times, but for some reason never went back inside to check in on that nagging feeling. And I was headed somewhere where a credit card wouldn’t do much good.

I was able to hit up Target during the first trip. The second time I just made what I had work – however, I was POSITIVE that I had packed a certain striped shirt that wasn’t in my suitcase, and felt like I was losing my mind. Luckily I did have a little perfume with me for both trips . . .

I always forget one or two things when packing for a trip. I take the pressure off by telling myself that part of the adventure of travel is doing without, finding a work-around, or shopping for a replacement for whatever I forgot.

Have a wonderful trip wherever you go and no matter what you forget to pack. :)

Work travel last week and so much to do in the next two weeks…
I tried Cafe Tuberosa yesterday, which was lovely coffee on the paper at Sephora, but then sprayed on me turned into a sickly sweet air freshener. And a lasting one!
Tried to wash it off after a bit, but had to do a full shower scrubdown last night.

    Monday!

    1) Have been off since the eclipse. Was sick as anything- flu, as it turns out, combined with the wildfire smoke from Eastern Oregon and Montana has made breathing VERY laborious. We had an eerie red dawn this morning in Portland.

    2) Am back to work, and am wearing Infusion Iris Cedre, which seems appropriate for cutting through the smoky weirdness of the air today.

    3) My friends in Houston are okay HOWEVER they are letting me know that there are parts of the city in dire straits AND there is still more rain to come.

    4) Game of Thrones: Man, of all the long delayed, much deserved deaths, that ONE last night I cheered at!

No mention of who was killed, but really, I didn’t even want to know that. The comments do kind of lead one to knowing what’s going on even if it isn’t spelled out. I’m not having a go at anyone, but I think this is the fourth time I’ve read innocently checking out what’s goin’ down in perfume land and bam! spoilers! So no, of course it doesn’t need to be a rule, but I know I’m not the first person to protest here about it.

In perfume news, my niece (who usually travels to Orlando with her Dad when we go) said that I’ve rubbed off on her. She was with me there when I shopped in Orlando, but she didn’t buy anything. On the weekend she mentioned that she has several samples now and can buy a bottle with the voucher once she decides which one she likes best! And she loves it when someone tells her she smells good!

No scent yet, but still some remnants of Sottile from yesterday. I decided to not put on scent as I had to take a kitty to another vet visit and thought my natural scent would help keep her calm. First visit revealed some blood issues (low platelet) and elevated thyroid so today was to get more blood for further tests. Sigh. Good news is her blood pressure is fine…I love that her blood pressure went lower as soon as I started petting her. So well behaved for a former feral that used to flatten ears, hiss and spit if you tried to put her in a carrier….

So sorry for the folks in TX dealing with the effects of this storm. I’m so heartened by the positive attitudes, calm and kindness of those impacted and those helping.

    SotD = Hiris for calm

I can’t imagine the difficulty for Houston and surrounding areas. Thank you to Robin for sharing the how to help article. Look for the helpers.

My son works for a friend who owns a bird shop where she specializes in rehabilitating and re-homing birds in need. Last night my son brought home a very young Meyer’s parrot that needs to be fed and socialized. It is messy and noisy but mostly a great comfort to have a baby bird in the house. The little parrot was quiet yesterday but today is whistling and chirping in its little nest box. It is a hopeful sound. Life will find a way.

aw, thanks Deva. I think he’s a good one.

My son has always had an unusual affinity for animals. The many birds he works with now seem to implicitly trust him. Even the most shy or upset birds respond positively when he is around. He must smell right to them. ;)

Sweet and kudos. Did you ever see “Parrot Confidential”? It was a documentary mostly about a parrot sanctuary/rehab. I never expected to cry but, boy, was it moving. I learned a lot about parrots. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it.

We’ll have him/her for two or three weeks until he/she is eating well and is socialized to living with people. Glad you asked, as I type my reply it strengthens my resolve that the baby parrot is a foster.

It’s so easy to fall in love with baby birds. They are adorable. My son would have 10 birds if I let things go that way. We have three, which is two more than I signed up for. :)

Very good morning all. I have an early appointment with the doctor and am wearing the elegant and discreet 32 Rue Cambon. I’m expecting slightly bad news about my heart scan, and I want to braced by a Chanel. I’m pleased to announce that all three kittens like Chanel (except Cristalle), and Alexander in particular is smooching hugely. “Smooching Hugely” is a new pastime in our house, by the way. “Could you please pour the tea?” “I can’t, sorry, Titus/Alexander/Eric is Smmoching Hugely.” Oddly, the dear man and I both seem to have accepted the excuse as a reasonable one for the other to offer!

Yesterday I was almost completely unproductive for work. I was unseftled and scattered all day. The first assignment I set to mark was so bad I couldn’t find any words to write feedback..I had better find some focus today! Be well, all.

SOTD is Papillon Salome–take that, Monday blahs!! …And, in the same spirit, I say: Scram, Harvey!!! Best wishes to all dealing with the destruction he’s wrought.

I don’t know how Salome would smell on me in larger doses because I’ve only applied it in small/single spritzes from my manufacturer’s sample. I suspect I might get some of the more indecent facets? In any case, this amount is utterly gorgeous. It’s only the second time I’ve worn it, but it’s definitely love. Dangit.

Checking in! My neighborhood is ok. The bayou levels near me never got out of banks and they’re way down now from where they were yesterday, so that’s all good. It’s been rainier and windier today, but still ok. I got out for a walk during a lull in the rain yesterday and walked over to the bayou to see how it looked. I posted this pic on Twitter: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DIQgBzyUMAAFAKw.jpg

Trying to work from home today but having a hard time focusing enough to get much of anything done.

I think I’ll be happy if I don’t hear the sound of rain again for a while. And I never thought I’d appreciate the sound of road noise outside (I live right on a busy road, so road noise is pretty much a constant), but since right now it indicates that cars can pass through normally, it’s actually kind of comforting.

Oh yeah, and I was commando until just a bit ago, but I spritzed some Assam of India. Something sort of citrusy actually sounded good, so it works.

Yeah, it’s crazy. Houston’s normal *yearly* rainfall is about 50″. So we’re getting a year’s worth of rain all at once. As I understand it, we actually get just as much rain as Seattle, or maybe even a little more, but we just get ours in more concentrated doses.

A lot of the more abstract community projects stretch my imagination to the point where I don’t even try (sorry, too left-brained here) but I have a long list of options for this week.

Starting off with Mon Jardin by Bottega Profumiera, a lovely green floral, and a garden a bunny might want to hop around in. It’s one of the few Olfactif samples I really liked after doing their program for a year. I got lots of orange blossom in the opening, and now iris in the drydown.

Best to everyone in the wake of the storm, and thanks for the link, Robin.

SOTD is Lubin “Nuit de Longchamp”.

    Top: bergamot, orange blossom, nutmeg, cardamom and ylang-ylang;
    Mid: rose, jasmine, iris, sandalwood and broom;
Base: patchouli, vetiver, Tolu balsam, Peruvian balsam, labdanum and oakmoss.

It’s a modern recreation of a vintage scent, and to my nose definitely has a period glamour to it. Worth checking out if you’re into vintage, or Chanel #5. It’s far too womanly for me.

Matching rabbit for this perfume: Jessica Rabbit. (I know that’s cheating, but so long as I wear this perfume I’m going to get away with it).

Happy to hear good news mostly from NSTers in the area affected by Harvey. Some of those images are reminiscent of Katrina and New Orleans, which is something I had hoped people would not have to endure for a good long time.

The weather has a definite fall feel to it today, so I’ve swapped out a few summer-y samples for things more suitable to the change. SOTD = Soivohle’s Calcutta, from the sample stash. This might be a patchouli week for me.

Late today. I wore Rahele which was a great comfort on a tough work day.

I will save the rather on-the-nose FM Superstitious for Rabbit Day and today smell gorgeous in Fille de Berlin, thanks to the generous flopper. This is no mere rose; it’s rose wearing kabuki make-up. It’s rose strutting its stuff on the street. Incongruous with its story for me, but fabulous nonetheless.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

    Therapeutic dose – don’tj10udgeme

Work drama – still with the Texas-sized issue. My prayers are with those impacted. I saw one of the saddest pictures, ever, period. A group of nursing home residents sitting wherever they were sitting in the living room, flood water up to their waist. The hopelessness was etched on their faces and the entire tableau was the vision of a nightmare. They eventually got rescued, but still, the first responders were shamed into addressing the problem.

Family drama – Thanks for the well-wishes. My only surviving uncle, whom many mistake as my dad’s twin, passed away early on Saturday morning. My dad was the uncle to whom my cousins turned for counsel and advice, whereas my uncle was the one to whom everyone gravitated for his sunny disposition. When they were kids, they had a thriving pigeon business because whatever magic they wrought, the pigeons somehow always came back with other untagged pigeon friends. With limited coop space, they sold the extra pigeons and used the proceeds to buy bird feed. After they both retired, they used to see each other 2-3x a week. When my dad passed away, my uncle looked lost, because he lost his best friend.

The drama – my cousins CHOSE to announce his passing via Facebook only – no calls (except to our cousin who is now the head of the “clan”). My siblings and I are either non-FB users or flit in and out occasionally (that be me). My sister called me very late on Saturday night to tell me the news. Anyway, I guess everyone deals with grief differently and I should not judge them.

Commuting Woes No. 387 (I think, but I am too lazy to look back):
    – What gives anyone the right to blast music inside the train?
    – Don’t you hate being next to people mining for gold? I got a two-fer today! One was a nose picker who kept picking and wrinkling his nose. The other wanted to grow a longer pinkie trying to get to the innards of his ear.

Hajusuuri, I am so sorry for you uncle’s passing. My condolences to you and your family.
I do not have Facebook either and like lillyjo I am also the last to know what it is happening with family, friends, etc. Still, I do not plan to open a FB account.

      My condolences, hajusuuri.

Oh facebook…i can see the good it does, but also…it feeds bad habits of egomanics (“look at ME, my kids, my food, my toe, my dog, my doorknob, my car, my garden, my earlobe, my dimple….) and it also enhances ‘living in a bubble’.
Not to mention the privacy issues and also personal drama’s (if you disagree, dont fight it out online…).

(so yes I also use it…i log in a few times a month, but I dont like it that much, may need to mute more timelines and follow more folks who have good content, to make it okay-ish. But still…it is such a mess…)

I’m so sorry for you and your family’s loss.
I am not on Facebook, and it seems like such an impersonal way to deliver such a message to family members.
Sending my sincere condolences your way.

So sorry for the loss of your sunny uncle! You’re not judging by being offended by the manner of notification. Texting, facebooking, etc are inappropriate ways of transmitting momentous news, like the death of a beloved family member.

As for the gold mining, UGH! That’s right up there with people who blow their nose into the wind! Gag!!

The photo you mentioned got me too! Just heartbreaking. Hope your next commute lands you next a wonderful smelling, astonishingly handsome and debonair man????

My sincere condolences for your loss. Facebook is a weird animal. I don’t use it, and when my dad passed, someone in my family posted the event, or people expressed condolences, I don’t remember, but the “likes” – what does that even mean? They are happy my dad passed?

The pigeon story is lovely – and so wonderful your dad and uncle had such a close relationship.
