Wednesday scent of the day 8/16

Posted by Robin on 16 August 2017 205 Comments

Madonna

Hump Day! Plus, Rum Day and Madonna's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Huge thanks to everyone who offered sympathy yesterday! I am commando, again. I did wear Diptyque Tam Dao last night and will probably put some on again this afternoon. We do not return home until tomorrow morning so posting will be light today.

Reminder: 8/18 will be Fugly Friday. That's the opposite of bottle porn Friday...wear a perfume you own (or just like) despite the ugly bottle. Suggested by Nebbe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The current humidity here is approx. 120%, so wearing Ava Luxe Morrocan Mint Tea EDP for a bit of bright, fresh relief.

Her bottles are very meh – simple round, clear glass bottles with a black screw-on top, but the scents are wondrous.

That sounds perfect! I never heard of that brand. I wonder if it bears any resemblance to Cire Trudon’s Abd El Kader candle/room spray? I use the room spray as a body spray ;)

    Happy birthday to Madonna!

Spending this Wednesday wearing Un Air de Bretagne again. My liking of it is growing they longer I wear it.

It’s raining today so perhaps I’ll stay at home this afternoon instead of going swimming.

Madonna! I’m old enough to remember her controversial MTV Awards number way back in the 80’s!!

Back home due to previously mentioned ickyness (think I’m fighting a sinus infection) and feeling better. Started the day with Paleo Pancakes in an effort to avoid sugar (which weren’t half bad). Keeping with the cave man/woman theme, I just spritzed a goodly dose of PdE Musc Tonkin. I smell “aú natural” with just a tad bit of floralcy on the side. My hypersensitive nose seems to not mind at all.

Wishing all good health vibes ✌????

I really like all her stuff. She’s such a chameleon and I really admire how bold and brash she is, and does her own thing. Don’t think there was anyone quite like her before, such a trend setter.

      Lovely new avatar, Deva!

And yes, I am also old enough to remember 80s madonna (the best madonna). Had posters of her on my wall and badly wanted a lace top and lots of bracelets.
But I was still a little girl, and sometimes asked my parents to translate part of her lyrics for me from english to dutch (“what is a virgin exactly?” hahahah).

SOTD Scherrer I EDP – love the galbanum and hyacinth. The bottle is OK, unremarkable. I wore Habanita (current edp) last night though; gorgeous scent, quite fugly bottle. I don’t tend to buy anything with a really hideous bottle though.

So far I’ve tried South Water (reminds me a little of Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess), Fresh Water (very pretty after a shower) and Petals. I’m very impressed with the longevity of Petals. I put a dab on each wrist and behind each ear, and I can still smell it hours later. Its a very pretty scent. It reminds me of a Hove Parfumeur scent I have called Carnaval. Both are great for the heat down here in New Orleans.

Still smelling the Adjatay I wore last evening, from an ugly decant bottle. Although I think the real bottle may also qualify for ugly week…I really don’t like those Devo hat caps!

Planning on sampling Dryad later. First wearing was a revelation– how can something be green and powdery at the same time?? Looking forward to seeing if it wears similarly today.

It definitely has a sweetness in there that I can imagine could veer to the decay side of things. Fortunately, I don’t smell that, or my skin muffles it. I just get exactly what it’s supposed to be…tuberose left in a leather handbag!

I was in a hurry this morning and I grabbed a small thing sitting on the edge of my dresser, which happened to be Floracopeia Rose and Vetiver attar. (I know there was a post about it few days ago but I only saw it only yesterday and I missed my chance to respond there.) It’s the new version in the roll-on bottle, different from the old dab-on version: slightly less rosy and the rose itself seems to be of more common variety, not the gloriously rich Rajasthani Bourbon Rose, but it’s still a great, unique scent, and it works really well in the stifling, swampy D.C. heat.

Happy birthday Madonna! I’m playing “Lucky Star” in honor of the occasion.

I’m back to my Prada Infusions sample set today with Infusions d’Amande. It’s a lovely and ultra-soft, floral amaretto scent. It’s probably the most romantic perfume I own.

Still sampling today; this morning is Parle Moi de Parfum Woody Perfecto. The notes are coffee, leather and vetiver. For such a simple list, this is really rich and almost creamy. I would say it leans masculine. My daughter says it smells like my sister’s car; she’s a big coffee drinker and has really nice leather interior, so little lass may be onto something with that comment.

I would say if an old fashioned cologne is a clear yellowish green (I have to use colors or fabrics to describe scents because I don’t have the words) them Hot Cologne is an opaque deep golden orange. And Woody Perfecto is a deep chocolate color.

Tango is a bit much for this early in the day. Thankfully the weather is cool, so I’m enjoying the dark golden cloud of scent.

During a drop off at the airport this morning I noticed quite a few fragrances in the air. Nothing I could identify, but it was lovely to walk the concourse with my nose twitching.

Wearing Frapin 1270 today. I had forgotten how lovely 1270 is and how boozy. I have tons of packages arriving in the mail today and I am arguing with Amazon. My Prime membership is going to be expiring on the 18th and I can’t afford the $99 today but tried to purchasing the gift of Prime (3 month subscription) and Amazon won’t let me check out saying that I have to wait until the 18th to renew. Well, I would like to renew it today.

Yesterday evening I trief Bond T by Sammarco (sample). If this is a gourmand, then I finally found something in this genre I really like. :) Cacao, tobacco, vanilla…and the patchouli in here is da bomb.

    And today:

On my left arm: aeon 001, from a sample. During first hours there is a citrus note and another fruity smell that does not work for me, it gets better after a while though. Ends up warm, cuddly and musky.

    On my right arm:
Gucci Bloom (bumped into it in the department store)
Tuberose and jasmine are my favourite flowers. But not like this :(
Its very clean and soft. Almost soapy. With a hint of something sour fruity.
    Booo.
I hoped Gucci would do something more daring (like with Guilty Absolute). But no.
I’ll stick to Moon Bloom, my favourite tuberose/jasmine combo.

The box and bottle of Gucci Bloom are quite lovely though – and I am not even a big fan op pink. Especially in the smaller size. I think I spotted 30 ml…

I think those bottles are pretty but neither scent appealed to me enough to try on skin. If those bottles were sold empty as refillable atomizers, I just might be tempted.

She (Madonna) Instagrammed a picture of her Fracas bottle, some rosé wine and candles. So we know it is valid…lol ;)

I have read in her brother’s book about her, that she on Girle show tour wore Annick Goutal’s “Gardenia Passion”. I also heard from insiders that she was a huge fan of Goutal’s Folavril, Eau de H’ardien and Grand Amour.
She also lit Diptyque’s Gardenia scented candle :)
But I think her true passion is Fracas-I remember seeing her in 09 and I could smell Fracas on her…that’s how close she was to me :D

I have no idea if she is fond of other fragrances, but I can easily imagine :)

Family discontent making me unhappy today.

Long story short: Mom’s mom lived with my parents for forty years, until she died, leaving THREE METRIC CRAP-TONS OF STUFF behind in the apartment they built for her in the basement. Eleven years after her death, a metric crap-ton of stuff is STILL THERE, despite multiple offers of help from me and my sibs; Mom feels a giant deep need to “go through” and “sort” the metric crap-ton, and further, not to dispose of any of the remaining metric crap-ton until she’s found it a “good home.” She keeps finding reasons to hang on to the (mostly junk) items my grandmother collected, not because Mom wants them herself but because… okay, well, you got me. I don’t know why. She has sixteen different reasons which really seem to add up to guilt.

In any case, my siblings and their families came for a visit from out of state last week, and due to the crowded conditions in the house, nobody slept well and unpleasant words were passed (especially between my brother and Mom, mostly about the junk still sitting around ten years after it should have been packed up and either thrown away or taken to Goodwill). Now Mom feels that everybody is against her because we’re all frustrated about the Metric Crap-ton. Clearly this is an emotional issue for her, and we get that… but really. Eleven years, and the apartment is still packed with furniture, bookshelves full of books, decorative items, ceramic bird figurines, ugly china of unknown provenance, cookware — and this is *after* most of the pretty things and items of sentimental value have been dispersed to family members and friends.

GAH. I need something for patience and comfort and the ability to start over with offering to go through the metric crap-ton with Mom, with the caveat that if we touch it, it HAS TO GO. If she insists that it’s good enough to be salvaged and she has a friend who might want it, that means I put it in my car and drop it by the friend’s house on my way home. (I live an hour away from my parents.)

Sorry to vent on you all.

    Maybe vintage Emeraude…

Maybe if she could approach it like losing weight. Rather than trying to get rid of it al at once ( impossible) she could lose a little bit at a time. Ask her to talk about the things in the pile. Anything with a ‘story’ attached (remebering the story might make her feel good) goes on the ‘keep’ shelf . Items with no ‘story’ are taken away, to a good home. . Start slowly…twenty minutes a day….until she gets the hang of it. Once the fear has gone she might find it easier . Also, get her to write her me ories down, so she has something to keep once the junk has gone.

We’ve gone at the task over many many months (ELEVEN YEARSSSSS 11 eleven), and we’ve done what I would think would be the hard part: clothes, photos, favorite books, furniture, jewelry, dishes, that sort of thing. Now we’re down to things like fabric and sewing patterns, a nondescript shell-and-rock collection and those d*mn “collectible” ceramic figurines (there are literally hundreds of them).

My sympathies–what I’ve seen is that no one really wants old stuff.
If possible, could someone outside the family say something to her–i.e, items take up too much space, clutter is a hazard, etc? These suggestions are a lot less fraught when not expressed by relatives.

That’s a tough situation that most families have to deal with at some point or another. When you’re not on the same page – for you and your siblings, it’s a question of practicality, for your mother, one of emotion – it’s very difficult to resolve. Maybe it’s best to move on if she’s really not ready to let go.

        I know.

What’s troubling us is that we think the clutter strewn across the entire lower floor of Mom and Dad’s house is adding to their general level of stress (plus some issues of failing health for both of them). And… eleven years since my grandmother died. ELEVEN YEARS. We’ve been giving Mom a pass on it because of her emotions, but all of the clothes/jewelry and most of the furniture has been passed on to family and friends, and what’s left is mostly junk. Eleven years should be enough time to deal with disposing of things that were not significant possessions.

What if you give up and let her keep what she wants? If it’s so incredibly distressing for her to part with the crap ton, why pressure her? If other family members find it unappealing or inconvenient, maybe they should stay in a hotel? Maybe it’s more about control than about the crap ton? Just saying…

If there isn’t a legitimate health hazard, why upset the poor woman? After she has stepped off the planet there will be plenty of time to get rid of stuff. If it brings her comfort while she’s alive, why not just let it go? People deal with loss and grief in different ways, and there’s is no “right” way. Maybe she is coming to grips with her OWN mortality and the crap ton helps her to do that? I know it’s probably not the popular response, but I think it’s better to be kind to her than cause distress by making get rid of a crap ton of comfort. No offense intended.

Oh what a situation. My mom is a hoarder and we used to try everything to get her to throw things away (her issue was mostly paper – old catalogs and magazines, and containers! So many fake tupperware containers!). Finally, she got remarried and moved out of the house and they had to get one of those dumpster bins outside the house to handle all the trash that was inevitably thrown away.

Agree to try and enlist anyone outside the family that she might listen to – maybe they could offer to take the stuff and then you just drive it to the dump/salvation army instead? I’m sure in 11 years you all have probably tried everything. Recently had to empty out my dad’s house after he passed away. We had to pay a hauler to come and take a lot of it away since it was just trash after family took the nice furniture and sentimental objects. Sorry that you are having to deal with this.

You are not alone. My mother’s dementia drives her to go through the bags of “stuff” ready for Salvation Army et al. and pull out items, insisting that this will absolutely *NOT* be thrown out because it is useful, money doesn’t grow on trees, I want to throw out everything she loves, etc., etc. Maybe I will have to dump the stuff at night, that way there’s no fear of her going down into the basement to rootle about (and breaking her neck in the process). Like living with a racoon… Suggest wearing the most glamourous, breathtaking scent you have–Calgon, take me away!

So sorry to hear you’re dealing with this. A 63 year old neighbor recently passed…much too young but it was probably a relief for her given that she had been in failing health for the past 20 years. Anyway, their house is the same size as mine and week after week, I kept seeing large garbage piled up. I can’t believe what else they were able to fit in the house with all that stuff having been in there!

SOTD is L’Artisan “Nuit de Tubereuse”.

    Top: pink pepper, clove and mandarin;
    Mid: tuberose, rose, ylang-ylang and mango;
Base: woody notes, musk, resins and angelica.

It’s fine, but I’ve got tuberose covered with Fracas I think. “Woody Notes” always makes me think of a fictitious folk singer or jazz musician. Off now for ein Bier. ;^)

Hello, from Horrible Thursday Morning. I don’t know why I’m so down, but I am. Work has turned pretty bad, but I can cope, day-to-day. Dakkie came through the crisis, but is still very ill. He will mend, and we will rejoice. The kittens are in riot mode, and are both funny and exquisite to watch. I have a splitting headache, but it will likely respond to pills. I therefore have no good reason for not having perfect equilibrium this morning, so I will attempt to bring my mood into balance by wearing La Pausa. Again, because I love it. It is beautiful, dry iris and vetiver, and I have some samples as well as the FB, so I can touch up during the day.

I didn’t go to the launch of Gabrielle. There were too many things to organise for Dakkie and I just wasn’t in the mood for champagne and making small talk with strangers at a rather sterile party. And then too, Angela’s review made me feel that I probably wouldn’t like it all that madly. Instead, I finally ate scrambled eggs on toast in the late evening and fell into bed about 8.30. Gabrielle can wait, probably indefinitely.

I’m wearing Taylor Swift Taylor. An underatted celebrity scent imo. Crazy stupid people work day, but i smell sparkly and peppy, lol. Happy Birthday to Maddona. It took me a few years to be a fan because when she first started I was all about headbanging metal.

Best wishes on this very exciting and yet hard transition for you, Robin.

Still visiting with family but getting ready to head to the airport soon.

So many lovely smells down here away from the city. Spritzing a little scent here and there but mainly enjoying what comes my way from being on the lake to moms cooking to fresh cut grass. Summer, ah…

Plan to dab a bit of Neroli Outrenoir before I head out.

You know, it really was relaxing. Sometimes with mom it can not be relaxing, but I managed to get some time on my own or with my brother and just chill. Best was out on the lake in a canoe where it was so peaceful. Thanks!!

I was digging through my sample drawer this morning. I may have been looking for something specific, but I don’t remember now. I found a mini of Le 3 Homme de Caron that I had totally forgotten I had, so I decided to wear some today. I don’t think I had ever worn it before, but now I’m glad I did. I like it a lot. The base is kind of reminding me of something else.. maybe multiple something elses actually.. but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I always worry about wearing something new that I haven’t sniffed before on a workday? What if I hate it?

That is a risk! It doesn’t happen often that I absolutely hate something, fortunately, but I have on occasion suffered through the workday and/or run to the bathroom and tried to wash off as much as I could.

Oooooh, Rum Day! I have a few to choose from, so I think that is tonight’s order of business.

SOTD = Bottega Veneta EdP again. Yesterday’s drydown was so appealing that I decided another wearing was in order. It is also distracting me from the cat scratches that Spooky inflicted on me last night. We were snuggling on the couch, and something startled her, so… OUCH! Fortunately I have a Band-Aid big enough to cover all the swipes.

Do you have any rum recommendations? I like the Flor de Cana silver (or seco? I haven’t actually read the label in a while!) for cocktails, but I’m interested in branching out into “sipping” rum.

Sure! I guess the first thing is to ask how dark you want to go? IMO, a good “sipping spirit” can be any color of rum, from white to gold, to dark. Some of my personal favorites are Anniversario Pampero, which is incredibly dark but oh so smooth; Ron Centenario Fundacion XX Anos Reserva Especial, which is an extremely nice gold rum from Costa Rica; Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 years, another lovely gold rum, but from Guatemala this time; Saint Augustine Distillery Pot Distilled Rum, yet another gold rum, made with locally (Florida) sourced/grown ingedients; and Olo Brazilian Silver Rum.

It’s been a while since I’ve had to shop for rum, so I hope that all of the ones on my list are still easily found. I do have a couple of others I love that I won’t recommend to people anymore since they aren’t being imported into the US or being produced anymore. Sounds familiar, huh?

          I’m sure I don’t know what you mean. ;)

Thanks for the list! I’ll see what’s available at my liquor stores. I live in a university town in the Midwest, in a state with a state liquor oligarchy, so sometimes we have plenty of stuff (we have armagnac now!) and other times it’s just things that people want for football games. Persistence helps! It will be like a scavenger hunt.

No fugly for me. Fragonard Tilleul Cedrat from atop my sister’s dresser. A light, sweet floral…linden! It’s very nice, especially after a hillside hike in the sun to an overlook of the Ojai Valley. Heading out now to do a tour of the local olive oil company. I could live here….

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDT

Not so fugly bottle but I prefer the square one. I kept smelling something wonderful and it was I, Me and Myself. Why don’t I wear it more often? To make up for it, I almost gassed myself with 6 sprays! My usual dose was 3 sprays. With 6, the perfume became creamier, as if vanilla was lurking in the background but it was probably the combination of benzoin and saffron.

    Commuting Woes No. 380:

There was a signal problem on the way home. The train was packed to the gills. Given the more frequent sudden stop and start, I had no choice but to grasp a pole firmly. Unfortunately, someone with long frizzy hair was next to me so I had to turn my head / face towards, you guessed it, a smelly armpit.

Riddle me this: Why is it that when 15 people come out of the train, only 5 or 6 people can manage to get in? For goodness sake, it is not a clown car!

I’ve never tried Volutes but I am sure you smell fantastic! It seems to get a lot of love here.

So glad that I don’t have to ride on a train or subway. OTOH, clearing off my car AM and PM and driving in the snow is no fun at all during winter.

Trade-offs! I still have a short drive to the train station and have a need to clear my car; however, I can work from home if I feel that the commute would be too unpredictable, possibly dangerous and/or inconvenient.
