The Grey Lady

Posted by Robin on 11 August 2017 9 Comments

Luca Turin talks about "violet, ionones and iris, in this teaser from the upcoming feature documentary, 'The Grey Lady'". From the film's website: "The Grey Lady is a documentary exploring the very real challenges faced by several perfumers in their competition to re-create a perfume that has been - and may yet remain - lost to time." I have no further information, but it looks like the fragrance is Jacques Fath Iris Gris. (For one "new version", see Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Scent of Hope.)

The documentary is being produced by The Institute for Art and Olfaction, and they're in need of funding support. There are fun perks! Do watch their video below the jump!

Yeap, it’s the Iris Gris remake. I sincerely hope they get it as close as possible to the original, though it depends on IFRA and the budget they’re willing to spend.

Does it depend on IFRA? I did not know they were trying to make a commercial product.

According to Luca, Fath are trying to remake it; how far can they actually go it’s unknown but they have been asking in forums (Luca) if anyone has a sample of Iris Gris in order to study it (GC/MS) so I guess they’re actually interested to see the feasibility of producing it as close as possible. It could also go completely wrong.

A perfumer friend of mine once told me it never was popular when it came out. Too elitist. And very costly to produce. Probably it was too ahead of its time. Now with perfumistas, it probably would very successful.

I admit that I have a 5ml sample of the one offered to smell at the Osmotheque in Versailles and a friend of mine you all know, found a pristine vintage bottle at a flea market.
We once compared it and mine had fresher top notes. I would say that basically it is a vintage version of Iris Silver Mist mixed with Persicol (peach note). Iris Gris is probably the most beautiful Iris perfume I have ever smelled.

oohboyoohboyoohboyoohboyoohboyoohboy!!! If this is true then oohboy!!! I was just talking about ISM to a fellow fume head yesterday, and how it is such a gorgeous amazing fragrance…reading this now reminded me about how stunned I was to find how similar the drydown was of both ISM and the Iris Gris version in Versaille, like rebieFR mentions above. It would be great though if they resurrected Iris Gris (as if thàt was not clear, hehe! ). oohboy…
