Wednesday scent of the day 7/26

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2017 248 Comments

Helen Mirren

Hump Day! Plus, happy birthday to Helen Mirren. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Alber Elbaz par Frédéric Malle Superstitious on one arm, and Nathalie Lorson's Le Labo Another 13 on the other. (I'd entirely forgotten Another 13. Does anyone here ever wear it?)

Reminder: 7/28 will be Nathalie Friday...wear a perfume by Nathalie Lorson or Nathalie Feisthauer, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It’s a gel in a pot – it’s $17 but it’s more affordable than a lot of the potted liners

What brand of liquid liner do you like ?

I really liked the Kate eyeliner, Victoria on BdJ reviewed it. But, waiting for it to come in the mail is too much of hassle for me since its ships from Japan.

Another big Deciem fan here – their “Ordinary” line is, I agree, very inexpensive and effective. I also use some of their NIOD products, which are not quite the same bargain, but I like them a lot. Have you noticed a huge spike in the number and variety of products they are selling, lately? I kinda wish they would stick to fewer, so that I don’t feel I have to test out more stuff……

I’m currently mostly using the BioBeauté by Nuxe crème lissante. I’m sure it’s not the best cream in the world but it works nicely. I also like Caudalie Vinosource riche.

Jasmine/Hedione, smoky frankincense, nail polish, musk ON MY SKIN. YMMV
    Wonderful! !!!!

SOTD is Parfums de Marly Meliora. Very fruity – juicy and tangy. A scent of summer berries. But I’d prefer it without vanilla (or with less vanilla) – it has this overused vanilla-musk base, although thankfully it’s not very strong. I think Meliora would be great for someone who would like to smell like a delicious summer dessert.

I am feeling better today. :) Many thanks to everyone for sympathy and good wishes yesterday.

You smelled lovely both days! I hope you are happy with your new job, lots of luck! I am still house bound because of my bad shoulder and it is getting a little bit on my nerves not being able to drive, cook, shop or work in the garden. Fysio said a corticosteroid injection may be needed if the swelling doesn’t lessen over the coming week. Wearing Heure Exquise, what else ;-) when in need for beauty, comfort and a bit of galbanum grit!

Oh yes, u can’t do better than the wonderful & gorgeous Heure Equise when going through troubles!so sorry you’re having such a difficult time.. I was thinking of u the other day when packing perfumes for a 2 week stay at a friends, going through my collection and thinking how so many of my favourites are thanks to you, and I always think of u when I wear Heure Equise, and a couple of others too.
I hope so much the swelling goes down without the need for the injections. It must be incredibly frustrating for u, especially as u are usually so busy and active!
Sending u love and scented hugs, and I hope the recovery goes swiftly and well X

I got engaged at the end of March (scent of engagement was Chantecaille Le Wild) and my wedding will be June of next year. Each step requires lots of reading. Have the venue, now to get a caterer and figure out where we’ll be going for the honeymoon–Bali, Zanzibar, Fiji, cruise? Possibly a cruise around Bali on a tall ship?

Wide awake at 1.30 am so now I know what time the first comments appear. I am planning to do a Jean Claude Ellena amber day with L’artisan Ambre Extreme vs. Hermes Ambre des Merveilles. Heard my first skylark of the season while out walking yesterday…hints of spring.

I prefer L’artisan too. It strikes me as a fuller scent whereas L’ambre des Merveilles feels a tad restricted by the fact that it had to reference the original Merveilles…i think starting from scratch with a composition works better than an edit.

Was planning on getting back on the low-gluten, low-sugar plan, but instead stopped at wawa and got a 20 Cuban coffee with French vanilla creamer and a pork roll breakfast sandwich – I prefer plunging off the wagon head first rather than falling off.

So I’m wearing Tommy Girl, which is a pre-perfume obsession scent I have. I just picked up “the guide” from the library, and I feel so edified that this was given 5 stars. I know there are lots of perfumes out there that I would gladly bath in, but with limited bottles and samples, this is one I really do enjoy and can spritz with abandon!

I had never heard of it until this May when I complimented one of it’s wearers, she said she had worn it for years, but was thinking of switching to a Coach scent.

I see it at Marshalls and TJ Maxx but have not taken the plunge yet.

Morning terror at work: 7am and we were all quiet and fully concentrated working. Suddenly a super strong smell hit our noses, brains, bodies and minds. We almost fainted and fell from our chairs. We did not know where the smell was coming from. One of my co-workers ran out of her personal Lysol wipes and decided that the best way to clean every single corner of her area of work (desk, chair, cabinet, etc) was abundantly spraying Charlie Revlon everywhere, paper towels soaked in it. No matter how wide open the windows are, we are and will be deeply suffering from this unexpected, unwelcome, terrifying Charlie “Bomb” attack forever. Even the carpet has been deeply affected! A bottle of almost 30 years, so you can imagine how concentrated it is….SOS!!!
No SOTD for me today and thanks to her…. maybe never again >:(

Nobody had any idea. I thought somebody was spraying on perfume, but the intensity was very abnormal. I was so confused and almost out of breath and Charlie did not come to my mind at that moment, until she happily showed the bottle. She said she has kept it in her drawer for almost 30 years when she started working here. She does not wear it at all, but I guess she decided to give it some use today. Another co-worker ran and brought an apple scented room spray to make the situation worse. I stopped her after the first spray. I was supposed to kidnap that bottle right away (I didn’t!). I just hope she does not try again anymore.

One of my favourite discoveries I made this year.

And i have to grin thinking about the afternoon the bottle arrived.
I had requested samples of Mito and Onda with it.
My husband came home, wanted to smell Maai, spritzed some in his neck, and then proceeded to spray mito on his left arm, and Onda on his right. I had quite the smelly husband that evening, we had a blast. Haha.

Tried Acqua di Portofino’s Notte “edt intense” (?) last night. No. No. Just, no. It’s got that ozone-marine-sport scent thing going on. If I had had the energy, I would have tried to scrub it off. This morning it’s faint remnants are actually quite nice– but the initial few hours are not remotely worth it.

Lazy day for me with no work. My younger son is home without plans so we are “doing” American history through movies. We’ve finished the Pilgrims and the French and Indian War, and are now pre-revolution–so working our way through the first installment of the 1970s Kent Chronicles. Discovered this gem when researching movies for this American history project. I was able to rent the videos through Netflix, if you like historical fiction and melodrama with a pinch of 1970s camp (William Shatner is Paul Revere!!!), these are great! Here’s a review from the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/19/arts/television/nbcs-1970s-mini-series-the-kent-chronicles-on-dvd.html

Moving slow on this gorgeous day….must get outside!

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones last night. My first experience with being near a mosh pit… I was thankfully to the side and right up front so I could brace against the barrier and protect a friend’s daughter. And preserve my toes…stupidly, I had on sandals. If I ever do that again, it’ll be hiking boots! Great show.

Scentwise, I’m sampling some body powders I got, as well as a big fluffy powder puff, from etsy. I’ve had bath powder but no puff, which are seemingly rare out there. I do wish they still made Aliage bath powder…it got me through some swampy DC summers.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1) SOTD: Soir de Lune, two tiny spritzs from a sample . Good, green and spicy! I showered in Satsuma body wash, so the two make a great combo.

    2) Iced cold brew coffee , fruit and yogurt for breakfast today!

    3) Very warm yesetrday and today; may go swimming tonight!

DS & Durga Burning Barbershop for me today. This is way outside my wheelhouse, very fascinating. Burnt herbs and burnt rubber, black tea, something medicinal verging on musty. For some reason it reminds me a little bit of the way my aunt’s house would smell in the summer. She had an old cedar home next to a river. Maybe it’s the mothball type smell that’s familiar?

still sampling the une nuit nomade line, today’s are better (than the strange rosa americana and murmure des dieux): fleur de fleurs (total White flower bomb, there are days for this), and Mr. Vetiver (more herbal-woody than vetiver, waiting for the drydown)

Still making my way through old decants/samples. Today I finished off Atelier’s Pomelo Paradis. Like many Ateliers, it has a lovely citrus topnote, but this frag disappears entirely in less than an hour on me – usually I get a few hours from an Atelier.

Thanks all! A few specific requests for good thoughts- one, that our houses sell fast (we have one here and one in Maryland and we’d like to sell both and consolidate and get one in New Mexico). They’re both on the market so hoping for speedy sales. Otherwise we will be making those house payments as well as a rental payment in NM.

Also that once I get settled I can find another good job. I probably won’t look until after my 2 week trip to Korea with my son (end of Sept.) but I’m a hard worker and would like to find something fast.

      Excited for new opportunities though!

    SOTD is Givenchy “Pi”.

    Top: rosemary, mandarin, tarragon and basil;
    Mid: neroli, geranium, lily-of-the-valley and anise;
Base: tonka, almond, benzoin, vanilla and cedar.

This has provided a soothing, warm bed of benzoin to cushion my hungover tiredness after a night on the razzle. ;^)

Can’t help wondering what Helen Mirren’s passport photo looks like. I’ve been awake all night…trying perfume combos with amber but have now sprayed Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger (Nagel?) over a fresh layer of Ambre des Merveiles and it’s good…my version of Twilly. I was thinking about inventing conveyor belt perfume for my house…based on conveyor belt sushi and train sets. A steady flow of perfume passing my table but then I would have no reason to ever stand up again. Walking to another room to spray perfume burns several thousand calories and if I buy CDG concrete I’ll get an arm workout too

I know…it was the very first Jo Malone scent that she actually created herself for her clients as a body/massage oil….so odd that they would not leave it in the lineup for that reason alone. It baffles me why they have d/c so many other good ones too (Vanilla Anise, the Fig one, etc, etc)

I saw your passport photo comment yesterday. I, too, had a doozy trying to get one that was “me”. My first attempt, I could have sworn the Costco technician had the setting on wide angle while being a mere 6 inches from my face. Foxbins had the best idea which was to get it professionally taken; U.S., passports are good for ten years so the extra cost can be amortized over 10 years :-)

I got very lucky with my driver’s license as I was able to opt to use the picture from 4 years ago. THAT one took 4 tries at the DMV (the lady was kind enough to allow the re-do but she warned me the 4th one was the last one).

Hello, all. Today’s A Day. Graduation, and 250 names in 9 different languages that I have to call correctly, lest I offend the graduands and their families. What perfume will see me through this marathon? I’m putting my trust in 31 Rue Cambon and hoping for the best, but honestly, the nicest thing anybody could do for me would be intravenous brandy. However, that’s not likely. Sigh.

Well, I’m rugged up in a long-ish black dress that won’t fight with my regalia, and I have on a red lippy, and really, there’s no reason to put off going to work. I should leave now. And I will. In five minutes. Or maybe ten, because Dakkie has flung a mouse onto the top of the bookcase, and I should rescue mousey and maybe dust the shelf while I’m there….I really am having a crisis of courage. I’m taking a deep breath and going now. Be well, all.

        hiya, hajusuuri!

I often sniffed No. 5 EdT at the perfume counters in the past. I should give it another try. For me the EdT is more woods, more iris, more backbone. The EdP is much more floral, rounder and lush, so much that it makes me drowsy. I like both versions but when I decided to spring for a bottle the EdP was the winner. I should also try Eau Premiere again because my skin and nose have definitely changed in recent years.

        Glad you’re back!

SOTD was Maison Martin Margiela’s “Replica” Tea Escape, from the sample stash. I say “was”, since it lasted all of 3 hours on me. Not really much there to begin with, IMO.

Sometimes, the short-lived ones serve their purpose. For example, Chanel No. 5 EDT lasts maybe 2 hours tops on me with 4 spritzes from my twist up travel spray, just enough time for a nice dinner that you know can’t go on for much longer than that.

I will grant that short-lived perfumes have a purpose. However, I wanted something that would hang around for a while today to distract me from things outside that weren’t quite the best smelling stuff.

Late today. Too many distractions! Had a work breakfast for a colleague who is retiring. She was very kind and helpful to me when I first started this job. She’s also very outspoken and doesn’t really care what others think about that. I’ll miss her ????
I wore Derek Lam Silent St today. Surprised by how much I like this cool, boring musk. Good for when it’s too hot (not today) or when you don’t want to offend yourself or others.

Chiming in late! Yesterday was my first day back at work. Back to back meetings and everyone wanting their issues, questions etc. addressed right away. I had an extensive vacation back up list and some people did what they were supposed to and others just…took up space. Anyway, yesterday’s SOTD had to be, you guessed it, Chanel No.19 EDP.

Today, I did a flanker of Nathalie Lorson’s Hermes Eau de Merveilles – Bleue! It was also one of the perfumes I wore often during my vacation so it prolonged my vacation euphoria. The other one I wore often was Chanel No.5 L’Eau. I brought the full bottles of these in the 30 and 25 mLs – it felt luxurious to be able to do that. jjlook, SunnyDay, Gi and AnnieA agreed that the bottles look adorable! I also wore my 2 staples — No. 5 EDT and No. 19 EDP.

Two tips for prolonging a vacation you enjoyed after getting home:
    1. Wear the perfume you wore on vacation in the days following your return to remind you of when you were on vacation
    2. Bring home bath and body products provided by your hotel / cruise and use them every time you want to be reminded of your vacation

    Smelled in the wild today:
    – Burberry Brit (whatever the original one was called with vanilla)
    – Jessica Simpson Fancy

What’s up with all the vanilla? I may wear one tomorrow.
