Monday scent of the day 7/17

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2017 209 Comments

Hemingway Library edition of The Sun Also Rises

Well drat, it's Monday again. It's also Peach Ice Cream Day, if that's any consolation, plus World Emoji Day ????????❤️????. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a "spray and walk through" application of Tauer Perfumes Rose Nip room spray ????.

Reminder: 7/21 is Ernest Hemingway's birthday ???? ????. Do what you will with the theme, and tell us why you chose your fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hermès Eau de Narcisse Bleu for me – it’s a hot day! I read somewhere that it smells like a building site and in a funny way it does, a most beautiful one – slightly cementy iris and some sawn wood…

Robin how do you like the Tauer room spray? All three look interesting.

I’m wearing Annick Goutal Myrrh Ardente lotion today- very beautiful and long lasting for a lotion. Wish I also had a bottle of the perfume.

I have two of them to test, and they’re fantastic room sprays — will do a short review later this week. The rose in particular though can’t compete with Tauer’s rose perfumes — fantastic room spray, but for personal wear I’d rather have Phi or Rose Flash.

How long are the room sprays supposed to scent the room? What is the best way ( other than wearing mass quantities of fragrance on yourself and sitting in the room) to use home scents? I like candles, but one has to pay attention to them.

I don’t know the answer as to how long they’re supposed to last, but these put out a significant amount of spray. If you don’t want to pay attention to something, I’d think reed diffusers or electric diffusers would be your best bet. I don’t want my room that smelly, usually — a spritz of something is better for me.

I agree with Robin that reed diffusers are the way to go if you want a sort of quiet “set it and forget it” room fragrance. Diptyque and Nest both have great ones. They’re on the expensive side but last for months on end and don’t have that weird chemical “fresh” scent that a lot of others have.

Sampling Rose Alcane – interesting scent, like a solarized-metallic version of a rose, I think I’ll be sad when my vial is empty, but do I want a FB?

I actually bought that bottle for a younger family member’s bday…I bought it last June for a steal and saved it until the winter to gift it to her…she isn’t really making a dent in it so I have been stealing sprays from time to time.

The body oil is ridiculously easy to make and costs a fraction of what one would think. I used 2oz of NOW Essential Sweet almond oil and 1 1/2 sticks of vanilla bean (which I get for $1.55 each at my local health food store). I hand planned on marinating until the winter but it smelled so good I had to test it this morning. I made two batches but to the other one I added a few star anise and whole cardamom seeds. Haven’t tried that one yet. It’s the poor man’s version of fragrant body oil :)

Oh and I forgot to say make sure that you cut the bean before adding to the oil so that the pulp comes out and scents the oil! Believe it or not, this smells as good to me as the bourbon vanilla oil I used to buy from Eden Botanicals which has gone up astronomically in price..I think vanilla is now being over harvested and it is impacting upon its availability which trickles down to the price.

So I split the beans but did NOT scrap them…I put the split beans directly into the oil and just let the bottles sit in my basement in a cool dark place.

I’m finding that I’m wearing quite a few of my “fall and winter” fragrances all year ’round these days. I’m really enjoying the way that many of them “bloom” in the heat. I got really tired of the citrus and aromatic scents that I wore much of the spring and early summer. Of course in Texas, I mostly spend my days inside in the air conditioning.

Right now, I have a vintage Chanel no 19 EDP on. After my shower, I’m going to spritz on the current formulation of no 19 EDP. I suspect that there is a huge difference between the two.

After poking around the internet for a while, I saw that A Wrinkle in Time was going to be turned into a movie to be released next year. I’ve seen the trailer and I’m not so sure I want to see it. Why? I’m a book purist and the casting doesn’t seem to fit. A Bridge to Tarabithia (the movie) deviated way too much from the book.

I hope you’re not referring to the race of the characters when you say you don’t like the casting. Even if you’re not, “the characters just aren’t like I pictured them” will be coded language many use to disguise racist reactions to this casting, so I would be careful when explaining my objections!

I’m not making it all about race. I don’t like how Hollywood takes everything about race. After reading interviews about the movie, it sounded like the director was making some kind of political statement. You don’t use a classic to make one unless the book itself is somekind of political statement.

But likewise, and especially since we avoid political discussion here in the interest of keeping the peace, we should be careful when we say what we hope others mean or don’t mean. Since Dawn did not bring up race she also should not have to defend herself against anything :-)

Or another way to put it, even if you were 100% sure you saw “coded language many use to disguise racist reactions”, the comment policy still basically prevents you from accusing another reader.

I liked the books as a kid. I re-read Wrinkle as an adult a few years ago, and didn’t like it nearly as much. It seemed kind of…stilted. So I’m pretty psyched if the movie is different from the book, and am looking forward to the casting.

I hear you about the which is better, the movie or the book?
I often prefer to never see a movie if I’ve read the book first. I love to let my imagination create the characters.
I’m currently reading Beautiful Creatures, and while I enjoyed the movie (hello Jeremy Irons!), the book is so much better, as is usually the case….

I hear you, but I really like it when someone takes an old idea, even a treasure, and looks at it a new way. Even when I don’t like the revision I appreciate the willingness to deviate.

One of my favorite plays is Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s The Visit, which I have seen produced countless ways–eras, styles, accents… (okay, maybe four in truth). Wish someone would produce it again in a new way! I’d see it yet again.

From the discovery collection, I’m also trying the MM and MC as alternates. Just tried the perfume at Ulta the other day – delicious, but love the idea of body products – have you ever tried adding it to a neutral lotion? I bought Lubriderm and added diamond and rubies to it – and it’s great.

Oh but forgot to say the place I am staying has an aroma sauna that smelled awful. Good idea, poor execution, at least to my nose. Way to soapy, a perfume type I myself don’t like at all. What is that smell?

I personally like the natural cedar smell of saunas. I’ve been in steambaths where essential oils (or something?) are added to the water. One was eucalyptus/menthol-y and that was quite nice. Sounds pretty good right now, actually.

Enjoy your vacation! Sounds like you’re off to a great start !

Yes that cedar smell is great. This was something in the steam room I couldn’t identify, but no worries. I swam and hot bathed and had a lovely relaxing time.

The only Hemingway novel I remember liking is The Old Man and the Sea. Not sure I would want to wear a scent reminiscent of that novel.
I’m wearing an old(ish) stand-by, Gardénia Passion, which is in actual fact a tuberose and a jolly nice one at that. Curious about those Tauer roomsprays.

I thought about wearing Creed Love in White today and tying it to this book because of this-
      https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Creed/Love-in-White-4262.html

The reference to the love of sailing and also the “marine harmony”

Have you ever read what Luca Turin said about Creed’s Love in White? It’s very funny although far from complimentary. I’ve never tried it myself, nor any of the Creeds actually.
I do hope I haven’t offended you, as that was not my intention.

Oh no offense taken :) My nose does not smell the way most folks noses do…many have noted that Love in White smells of sugar and rice and everything nice…to my wonky nose I get lots of citrus and it even reminds me a bit of Cristalle and the discontinued Pucci Sole 149 (and because I like them both is why I think I like Love in White) I have a very small sample (only 1/4 of the vial) and only tried it once so I really can’t say for sure that it is an absolute love but I definitely enjoyed it :)

Like madtowngirl, I also like the Escadas and many of the cheapo drugstore fragrances I grew up on…I will wear it all :)

    Good Morning!

    1) SOTD is Santal 33 (from a sample). It is lovely and fresh and I see why it became so popular. Is it full bottle worthy? Not for me, finally. Stash by SJP fulfills the woodsy unisex theme!

    2) A beautiful, beautiful weekend here in Portland! Sunny and breezy and with gentle summer warmth. Recovered about 80% from my horrid migraine attack, so was able to enjoy the bright sun and even the ambient city noise.

    3) Game of Thrones, GUYS. GUYS. GUYS. That opening! Almost as good when Walder Frey got it. Or when Bolton got it.

If one applied that to the entire literary canon, it would leave women with very little to read without being offended.

I read Hemingway in my late teens and early 20s (as well as Fitzgerald and their other contemporaries.) I haven’t read anything from that era since then, but at the time I was a big fan.

    Well. Monday.

Since no one has contacted me from my contracted facility, and my voice messages I left on Friday were also not returned, I went ahead and went to work today. SOTD was Omnia (Le Original) which I forgot how much I liked.

Of course, after I arrived and multiple people were called, I was told that in fact I was not supposed to be there and should instead arrive tomorrow at 9am to speak with the scheduler.

So. Returned home, packed up the dog for what I thought would be a short jaunt at a local park and got lost for 2 hours. There is an extensive trail system, some paved and wheelchair accessible, others boardwalks over wetlands, as well as dirt trails for hikers and mountain bikers! Right in the middle of town, and you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. It was the very best way to get lost!

Omnia is mostly gone, just like the bowl of steel cut oatmeal I just wolfed down and the hard boiled egg T-Rex gobbled up. Now for a shower and a new scent….

A nap may be in the works, too…????

I’m in Greenville SC. I was at Lake Conestee Nature Park, which connects with the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22 mile trail that follows old RailRoad routes. It is quite extensive, and of course I found the map online. After I got home.????

It’s really well done with many educational placards about indigenous plants and animals all along the trails. Also did a good job explaining the ever shifting river and gradual process of the lakebed being filled in over time due to the sediment rich river flow. It’s quite the hot spot for birders because of the extensive wetlands attracts numerous species.

I had a friend that went to college in Madison. She was a Wisconsinite by birth and always used to tease me because I was from Illinois. If I get to Wisconsin, I’ll let you know for sure. For some reason, I was thinking you were in the Chicago area. The Midwest seems to be the area currently most in need of nurses and there are many opportunities for travel there. ????

Wearing Cedrat Enivrant today as a tribute to my turned bottle of Eau d’hadrien.

I tried just splashing Ed’H instead of spraying, thinking that the issue might be the spray mechanism. Nope, still celery, but slightly lemony celery. I dumped the remains of the bottle down the bathroom sink last night, and this morning my sink smelled very faintly of lemons, no celery at all. Good thing there are many lemony, woody scents out there.

I can think of worse things (to smell of when perfume dies), I guess.

Come to think of it, I recently wore a sample of Antonia’s Flowers and it was really unpleasant and smelled of bitter celery, which I hadn’t recalled from testing it previously. I wonder if it had just gone off? It wasn’t that old – I got it a year ago, maybe? Or 18 months?

Today’s SOTD is Alessandro Dell’ Acqua by Alessandro Dell’ Acqua – one of my favorite florientals, with crisp/greens (Geranium, coriander & sweet pea) florals (rose, peony and hibiscus) with an incense (sandalwood & incense) dry down.

SOTD is Byredo “Rose of No Man’s Land”, starting off a week of vaguely Hemingway-inspired scents. I chose this for its WW1 reference, which is great so long as you overlook that it’s the wrong country. Or maybe there was a No Man’s Land on the Italian front as well?

    Top: pink pepper and rose;
    Mid: rose and raspberry bloom;
    Base: papyrus and amber.

It’s a perfectly nice rose, if you like that kind of thing. :^)

I didn’t sleep well last night so I decided I needed something peppy today. So I went with Calyx.

SotD = Eau des Merveilles because I’m predictable like that.

It’s a cloudy Monday at the beach. The fragrant sparkle of EdM makes a pleasing contrast. Went for a long walk along the water at low tide. Found two pairs of swim goggles, a pair of sunglasses, a blue t-shirt, and a sweater. Mercifully the clothes were above the tide line. It’s fun to leave them at the edge of the parking lot and watch them disappear.

Went out for a bike ride because it was nice and cool and cloudy with little wind. Of course halfway through it poured rain and I came home soaked and caked with dirt. After a wash of myself and the bike, I am in Bruno Acampora Musk.

I’ve been patch testing Chanel Cristalle, Amouage Bracken and Smell Bent Florist Fridge – comparing the three as all have a green, stalky freshness. The Chanel is the smoothest and richest of the three, beatifully blended and pulled together ( which is part of my problem with Chanel perfumes ). Smell Bent is the art student version, and a bit chalkier than the others. Amouage is the midpoint, I think – but now I’ve finished my sample so the experiment is falling apart.
Also tried layering Florists Fridge with amouage Journey to see if that would give me Bracken. It worked better than expected, and I liked the combination.
Today I will layer Interlude with Journey and see what happens. Freezing here. Reminds me of when I was a kid scraping the ice off my bike seat before heading off to school.

Very good morning, NST. My new boss (female, Turkish) loves perfume and was wearing something DIVINE the other day. She said it was by Kenzo, and the name sounded like J’ai V???? I didn’t like to ask twice, because….oh, I don’t know! Because I didn’t want to seem as stupid as I am, I suppose. Anyway, it was fabulous on her and I now have have USES (Upward Scent Envy Syndrome). Many of you may well know the perfume she named, but whatever it is, it won’t be available here. Sigh.

I’m cheering up a dreary old grey day by wearing my dearly-loved Amber Narguile. I really do smell like warm apple crumble, in the best possible way. It’s a happy, even jolly, smell, but not without a modicum of elegance. Actually, I don’t think J-CE was capable of making a clumsy perfume. Even when I don’t much like his scents ( a couple of the Jardin series cone to mind), I like his style.

Well, off I pootle. I have to throw three students out of my papers today. I hate doing that, but it has to happen. Again, heavy sigh…at least I smell delicious!

Popping on to say that I’m wearing the very last drops of my Fille en Aigulles decant and smell wonderful. Sadly, I’m bloody furious that I won’t be getting either of the bottles I ordered and am completely fed up with online discount retailers right now. You may remember that I ordered a bottle last week at a hell of a deal? Well, Tuesday I got an email that they had accidentally over-sold and that they would issue a refund. Not to be thwarted, I promptly ordered from my second choice retailer who claimed at the time to have four bottles left. I just got an email saying that oops, they sold out before my order came through (five days ago!), and I could have a 10% coupon instead. I think the 10% is what’s making me boil. Those jerks almost always have 30% discount codes floating around and this is the third time they’ve pulled this on me. I should know better by now.
Sorry for the rant, but I know you guys would feel suympathetic. I guess I’m stuck ordering from luckyscent and either paying an arm and a leg for shipping or watching my bottle travel the country in the heat :( What a disappointment.

Slightly delayed SOTD = Soivohle’s Studio Red Rose, from the sample stash. Liz Zorn does some really pretty roses… I had an appointment with the eye doctor this morning, so I figured I’d play it safe and not wear scent until after I had come back home.

Oh I have been wearing my three Liz Zorn decants that a fragrant fairy gifted me a lot in the evenings…Jasmine Summer, Lilacs & Heliotrope and Honeysuckle Bird…they are all so perfect for the summer! I might wear Honeysuckle Bird and tie it into Idaho which is where Hemingway lived for a while…don’t know why but when I think of Idaho I think of farms and meadows and beautiful scenery….and Honeysuckle Bird seems to fit that scene to my nose…..any Idaho folks out there who can tell me if my perception is off?

As it so happens, I lived in southeast Idaho for 10 years as a kid. Not so much meadows, but plenty of farms once you get outside the larger towns and cities. (That doesn’t take long, BTW.) It’s semi-arid there. Hemingway lived in the mountains in Ketchum, which is right next to the Sun Valley ski resort. Think of hot stones, pine trees and other conifers, and maybe some sagebrush as some of the things you might smell there.

Thanks for that tidbit! I will now have to “rethink” my Idaho perfume for the week :)
Or maybe not as Honeysuckle Bird might work on a farm!

I turned the last of my terracotta sample into a body oil and have some Kenzo UFO on top. Back in workshop, building our piece, so I won’t be too creative or strong with scent this week–will save those characteristics for writing etc!

I only tried Cuir in solid perfume form a few years ago and it did not work for me at all…someone said that Mandy uses ambergris in her base so that may have been it….but YMMV…..naturals come across differently with different skin chemistry.

Too mental today to think about Hemingway, except to say that I did love For Whom the Bell Tolls… wore Sublime Balkiss … oldest wayfairing son is off to camp for a week and then another week washing dishes (at least he will grow proficient at something that will make him an excellent spouse one day) .
