Tuesday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2017 202 Comments

Paris tea for one

Happy World Population Day! Plus, free Slurpees from 7-Eleven. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando again, while I decide what to do today. It's a little cloudy here and we might get some rain this morning, in which case it might be a town day (shopping, ice cream)? Tea at the moment is Bond Street English Breakfast from Upton, which might be followed by a nice iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts. (In Massachusetts at least, Dunkin' Donuts appears to be winning the coffee wars.)

Reminder: on 7/14 we're celebrating Bastille Day! See if you might possibly have anything French in your collection? Extra points for extra-French-ness, or for silly perfume Frenchification.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the La Tour de Paris tea for one set ("Decorated with a vintage Parisian illustration, this tea for one brings the sophistication of Paris to your tea time.") is $37 at Stash Tea.

Habanita by Molinard: Spanish name, decidedly French scent — tobacco and crepuscular flowers and slightly raunchy skin. They did a GREAT job reinventing it in 2012.

You smell great! I love this one and was craving it the other night. Had an “only a perfumista” moment as I knew I had a sample and it had to be in one of 4 bags of samples. Found it in the 2nd bag.
I should really get my hands on a fb.

It’s not horribly expensive and there’s nothing modern about it — it isn’t a gourmand and it isn’t bright and fresh. It’s a real throwback in the best way. I can’t believe it took me this long to get a bottle.

I always assumed they took the name from the eponymous piece in Carmen, by Bizet, which is the most Frenchified version of Spain possible.

Bronze Goddess would be nice for an afternoon poolside too, but I do believe kpaint is right–any scent would wash off in the pool and need to be reapplied

I thought the same today: why has not it occurred to me before? I could not choose between those two and then I suddenly realized I can wear them together. Pampelune and Herba Fresca should mix very well.

SOTD is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Covet.
I love the combination of greens (geranium & lavender) and musky woods dry down.. I have decanted a bit for later today for a respritz at lunch time.

It sounds like you’re having a fabulous vacation Robin, I’m a def. fan of DD’s coffee, but out here on the left coast, it’s all about Starbucks and Peets which are decidedly stronger (jet fuel) taste!

I take it that’s one of the complaints DD people have about Starbucks: too strong, burnt taste.

I am not a serious coffee person really. I like a latte every so often, and I liked iced coffee in the summer. DD lattes don’t taste right to me mostly because I am used to the Starbucks taste. The iced coffees are equally good. But I do not have any strong opinions. I have been told in Mass in the past that there is no reason to go to Starbucks other than pure snobbery :-)

I need to walk the two blocks up to DD to get an iced coffee this summer just to check it out. I’ve been making a bit of extra coffee in the morning in a jar and refrigerating it to have iced coffee the next day.

    preshower Hanae Mori
post shower- Keiko Mecheri’s Camelia (getting mint), Un Jour d”Ete (coconut) , Passiflora and Caron’s pure perfume French Cancan (leather)

four hours later all is gone so ……Perfumerie Generale’s Tuberose Couture, Coze and L’Eau de Circe (like this one the best) and Parfums de Nicolai Rose Intense (much better than Patchouli Intense) and Rose Pivoine…liking them both and will share with a younger family member who is getting into roses….

later when this set wears off I will be sampling some more :)

I think I will celebrate French week by embracing Miller & Bertaux’s weird franglais names. Today is #1 (for you) / parfum trouvé, not my favorite and I mostly bought it because when they first came out the idea was you could layer #1, #2 and #3 in any order, which didn’t really… work? But it is nice enough.

Robin, sounds like you really know how to vacay! Good for you! :)

SOTD is Daisy Dream. Can I tell a quick story? My daughter gave this to me a couple of years ago with her own money….so sweet! I’m wearing this today because I’m SO PROUD of her today. Last school year, she had her gallbladder removed after months of misery. She missed almost a month of school days last year, with illness, doctors’ apts, and surgery. As a result, she failed her Chemistry class. FAST FORWARD to this morning: She went to summer school for 4 hours a day, and took the final today….Final grade is an A!!!!! I am so proud of her determination to turn things around, give up her summer with little complaining (just a little! LOL), and get back to business. I’m wearing Daisy Dream and thinking of my baby today! :)

Thank you for sharing that story. As an educator, it surprises me how strong and determined a lot of kids are. When we think they are down for the count, they rise to the occasion.
One of my good friends daughter had a horrible case of mono this past year and she missed months of school. She worked at home everyday, teachers came to her house, etc….
Kids are a lot stronger than we give them credit for.
Congrats to your daughter. You have every right to be proud! :)

    SotD is Sycomore, Chanel

Despite this brands enormous reputation as a perfume producer, this is the only scent in their collection that works for me.

Okay i have not tried them all, but I tried a lot of them and they are just ‘not me’, though I was also disappointed in some of them because of poor longevity or poor quality (for that price tag).

I often find them too cool somehow. Although I am being seduced after two visits to the Espace Chanel and appreciating the individual essences from their Olfactorium.

I didn’t like the original Sycamore, but I like the new EdP and may have to have it in the fall. I already added the EdP of Bois des Îles to my collection. 28 la Pausa is an old fav for when I need something light and irreproachable.

Yeah I still need to try a lot of exclusifs. But to see the edts replaced by much more expensive edps with new formulas…that was a big let down for me.

        They do make good stuff.
I know someone who wears coco mdmsl with flair and i like smelling it on her.
And the Cristalles, no 19s they are beautifuly made! But wearing them, i feel like putting on a mask, they dont fit me.

Maybe it is also because they sometimes remind me of teachers and mums from my childhood. So i associate it with authority hahhaha.

Dunkin Donuts! I miss them. Glazed chocolate, and butternut crunch. Mmmmm donuts….

Faux-French again today, Le Troisieme Parfum from Coolife, which is an American hipster doofus brand (albeit founded by a Rochas descendant). Citrus, jasmine, orange blossom, vetiver, and juniper. It’ll be gone in a few hours, which is fine; then I’ll get to pick something else. Wheee!

Hahahaha, Yeah thats pretty doofus. Extra points for silly faux-french :)

Here in the Netherlands English/American is ruling the marketing completely: brand names, pay offs, text on packaging. Sometimes it gets too silly and too much.
Even normal household stuff or typical dutch brands/products. :(

This week, I’m re-testing samples I received last week from Luckyscent of 4 of the 5 fragrances from Sylvaine Delacourte’s new, eponymous line. I have to say that I am extremely impressed, overall; I could very easily justify buying each one. I find each to be exceptionally well crafted and original, offering a distinctive twist on often-trod themes.

Today I’m wearing Smeraldo, a soft green fragrance. The official notes are yuzu, vetiver, angelica, mastic, hawthorn, pear, leaf cedar, rose, lime. It’s not a sharp or pungent green; instead, it has echoes of DSH’s Celadon, with prominent green notes that are smoothed and polished down to a pale green gem. [Side note: after typing the previous sentence, it occurs to me that Delacourte and DSH share many similarities in their styles and approaches to perfumery.] The yuzu, lime, and pear offer a brightness that is green but not overtly citrusy. The mastic gives off a very light, sap-like quality. The angelica and hawthorn balance each other nicely, with the former’s sweetness nicely countering the more pungent tendencies of the latter. This is a really beautiful fragrance whose brightness and airiness are perfect for very hot weather. It’s definitely going on my wishlist.

I’m wearing Mugler again today. Oriental Express on one wrist, Cuir Impertinent on the other. Why? Because they are having a sale, 10 to 20 percent depending on what you spend (no affiliation) since I have the day off, I’m going to spend way to much time deciding which one I want, and then not get anything (probably) so far, the Cuir Impertinent is winning.

Finally heard back from the oral surgeon’s office and an office visit isn’t needed until the 20th. I wish they would have called yesterday to tell me. I used a little bit of the $12 allowance I had on Amazon to buy a movie. I’m thinking of getting another but I’ll wait till later to decide if I really want it.

Since it’s hot and humid out, I am wearing Chanel no 19 EDP.

I’m doing a very bad job of following instructions today in the very American Dame Earth Mother. I availed myself of the offer of a free sample of Monsoon on 4 July, and…he threw in free samples with his free sample! Crazy. It was the cutest little package. Super-generous of him.

I tried on Monsoon right away, and it smelled like freshly laid pitch. I haven’t decided yet if I like that. Earth Mother smells a bit too sweet and syrupy, like a Tocca. I THINK that means that I like Sky Father–I tried both on some months ago and liked one of them and not the other, so I guess I need to buy one of those trial sizes of that one so I can compare.

I picked up a decant of Bois des Îles this morning thinking it was something else, but thought I’d give it a try. I test this one a couple of times a year but have always found it too sweet and thus not a pleasure to wear.

I think I’m almost there! Smells quite good this morning; very creamy.

I commented yesterday but didn’t post my SOTD. Started the morning with Atelier Bergamot Soleil, which I topped off later with VCA California Rêverie. I spent the evening in Laurence Dumont/Les Senteurs Gourmandes Vanille Chocolat. I’d been looking for a bottle at French drugstore prices (rather than American, where it’s vastly marked up) for 6 months or so, and finally found one. It arrived yesterday and it’s delicious.

Morning, all. Perfectly horrible weather here: the rain gets an A+for both effort and delivery! To stave off the mid-winter blues, I’m wearing Coromandel. Its powerful earthy presence both anchors and cheers me. The slightly camphorous smell of patchouli is heady and beguiling today, but not because it’s mysterious–rather the opposite. It’s enchanting me today precisely because it’s so easily grasped and understood. I’ll have to remember this, because there’s a lot of rapid change happening in all parts of my life right now. If I get frazzled, Coromadel might be a choice for feeling grounded.

Speaking of change, let me present fickle Dakkie. He has abandoned all his knitted mice for a gaudy scrap of royal blue and scarlet fur which the cat sitter must have given him. He’s a cat in love: he even took this trollop into his hut last night. He carries this colourful strumpet around with him all the time and puts it down in front of us as though he wants us to play fetch, but then he picks it up and rushes away with it…we’re clearly allowed to admire but we are Not To Touch. I have to say that I hope this is an infatuation and over soon, because the whole house is covered in wisps of blue and scarlet fur.

    Be well, all.

    I have a question about decants I bought and potential evaporation/underfilling please…

I bought a group of 3 ml spray samples from one of the major decanting websites last year and forgot about them…impossible I know. ;) I unearthed them recently and noticed they are all filled to the 1/2 mark so about 1.5 ml and some are even down to the 1/4 mark or probably .75 ml. They were shipped in a little box and I never stood them up to examine the fill levels when I received them. I checked the order slip and I ordered 3 ml sprays. At first I thought this was evaporation and I think for the less filled ones it is but now I am thinking they shipped me 1.5 ml incorrectly…I’ve never had decants evaporate like this. Le sigh.

I believe Robin Williams said cocaine was God’s way of telling him he was making too much money. Perhaps this should tell me I have too much perfume…but it is also a warning to check your decant fill levels when you receive them…stand them up and give them a good look over before you forget about them. ;)

In other news, I am wearing Myrrhe & Delires for, I think, the first time and it is quite wonderful!

I really do think it was evaporation, because they normally put the juice in an appropriately sized atomizer. They wouldn’t have used 3mL atomizers for 1.5 mL. This is exactly the reason I will never buy decants anymore unless it is something that is truly impossible for me to get some other way and I REALLY want to smell it (AND I’m going to use it immediately).

So I got them from the TPC and was just poking around their site and noticed this

*Please note: Our 1.5ml sprays are currently being shipped in a half-filled 3ml atomizer.*

        http://theperfumedcourt.com/what-is-a-decant

But maybe it could be evaporation…I just wouldn’t expect to lose 1.5 ml that way in a year but I have seen people lament evaporation with decants too…maybe stuff goes quicker than I think.

yeah. I definitely have had that much evaporation, even WITH parafilm. I put parafilm on all decants when I receive them. but if that is the case and you ordered them from TPC, then lucky you! looks like they are out of the correct size atomizers…I only have ordered from Surrender to Chance and not TPC, so I haven’t experienced ever receiving the decant in a larger atomizer than necessary.

I shall have to get more parafilm. You put the around the the outside of the atomizer where the top screws on to the glass bottom yes? do you also put around the glass threads too before you screw the sprayer in? I’ve seen some people do both when they’ve sent me stuff.

I was googling and someone was saying that storing decants on their sides, which these were, makes them evaporate even quicker. ????

I’ve got to start spraying with true reckless abandon to use up stuff before it disappears.

I put my decants in small plastic bags. I save the small bags that come with other purchases and it does help. Although parafilm is probably more effective.

      Robin Williams did.
I use parafilm on decants and inadequate bottle to prevent evaporation.
      It’s explained on BdJ:

Without even looking at the replies to your comments, I would have guessed the ones that evaporated came from TPC…and the world knows I will NEVER EVER order from them again even if you pay me to order from them. ALL of my decants from TPC evaporated. Anyway, the decants from STC stay filled even if you don’t add a layer of parafilm unless you’ve sprayed — once sprayed (even just one teeny tiny spritz), you will end up with sludge in about 3-6 months unless you parafilm the nozzle.

You are correct. ;) Yeah I have to get more parafilm…I ran out and got complacent.

It’s interesting b/c some decants I have from NSTers and others from STC don’t appear to be affected…so perhaps it’s a matter of bottles/supplies too…and agrees with your comments as well.

Inuse plumbers tape on the inside threads of the screw top primarily for 10 mL decants that I mail. I also used it on an early purchase of 4 mLs that tended to be leaky.

Yep, ditto regarding TPC. I also discovered that the tops of their spray decants weren’t screwed on all the way, so it’s hard to know if hasty filling is the culprit or it’s their supplies. Either way, now we know, right?

+1 here. Their Decants are horrible quality, and a couple of times the fragrances I got from them did not smell like a real thing.

I’ll add to the chorus of TPC evaporating decants. I love M&D, I would be happy to send you some if you like it. My email:

Courtesy of the lovely Deva, EdLO Putain des Palaces. I really love this – sweet and powdery. I read some reviews and oh boy, on me I don’t get any of the other notes that some commenters did.

Wearing Hiram Green Dilettante, which I bought 10 ml of blind in the Twisted Lily sale. I love it. I got a 10 ml of Moon Bloom as well and am very happy. Both should get a lot of use this summer.

Very late posting after a fun night out in the Old Town of Düsseldorf. SOTD is “1969” from Histoires des Parfums (or du Parfum or whatever). Chosen in honour of the exasperating/inspirational French tendency to march and protest and strike when they don’t agree with the authorities.

    Top: Peach;
    Mid: rose, white flowers, cardamom and cloves;
Base: musk, patchouli, chocolate and coffee.

This is very nice – the peach is fresh and zingy, the chocolate in the background is rich rather than sweet. Onto the longlist! :^)

1969 really is the perfect “Summer of Love” scent, too – free love was also a form of “Révolte.” ;)

    SOTD =’Guerlain Mon Guerlain

I was flailing about for what to wear today (not really…I just wanted to use the word flail). Anyway, I spied a graveyard of half-used sample atomizers and rooted around for something French and ta-da. It actually is not half bad. Now, I get the lavender…I guess the key is to use just a tad more — 3 instead of 2 sprays. I wouldn’t’ buy a FB but would happily swap for a decant.

Things I could not unsee and have to share – hirsute overweight man wearing a faded navy T-shirt and tartan plaid Bermuda shorts running in slo-mo in this horridly humid day. I hope he hydrated and is in better shape that he looks.

I am off to Vancouver tomorrow and have a Sniffa, food and wine meet-up this Friday with jjlook, Gi, AnnieA and SunnyDay. Wahoo!!!

I went to a wonderful theater-in-the-round production last weekend. The only drawback: it was a matinee, and the first rows, which one can easily see in the stage lights – were full of overweight people in shorts – all those bare, bulging legs in full view. Please show a little respect for the arts (and yourselves), people!

It’s an easy perfume to wear. Just been outside tossing snowballs and building snowmen….actually, just me and the dogs ( as the kid won’t get out of bed). Have a good time in Vancouver – lucky you!

Today I was able to slather myself in YSL Cinema and then drive to Richmond, Virginia, to enjoy the YSL show at the VMFA. Oh the clothes! The jewelry! The hats!

What’s more French than vintage YSL Rive Gauche? I’m not even going to consider an alternative.

Still playing catchup with my normal schedule today. I guess things were more off-kilter from last week than I thought. Gaming conventions will do that. SOTD = a second wearing of Tauer’s Lonesome Rider, from the sample stash. It’s a solid like, but not a love.

Even later to the party. I thought that I’d try wearing a bit of Olivia Giacobetti Crème Pour les Mains Au Beurre d’Iris today, just on my forearms. I mean, I used the smallest amount possible.

About 2 minutes after I sat down at my work station, the perfume police ran over & said ‘what kind of lotion do you have on’, not in a good way either. I was pretty shocked at the response since there is smoke all around us from the numerous forest fires which broke out over the weekend in our province. There’s even smoke smell seeping inside our office.

I enjoyed the light fragrance most of the day, huffing every so often; I even topped it up when I got home.
