Wednesday scent of the day

Posted by Robin on 5 July 2017 232 Comments

paddleboard

Hump Day, folks! What fragrance are you wearing?

Update: I am using a new spam filter and a few people have been blocked from commenting for no good reason. My apologies — I am working on it! Meantime, if you let me know you've been blocked, I'll unblock you.

I'm commando at the moment, but hope to do some testing in the afternoon. My sporting plans for today: paddleboarding, plus possibly some competitive eating.

Reminder: on 7/7 we're doing Sports Friday...wear a sports scent! If you just can't go there, wear the sort of fragrance you think one might actually wear while doing something sporty.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: The ISLE Voyager Wood Paddle Board Package (I think by package, they mean it comes with the oar?) is $1,045 at Isle.

Vintage Bel Ami by Hermes, leather and bitter bitter green herbs. It took me decades to appreciate how good this is.

As Luca Turin said, “Listen to it carefully, and you won’t need to read The Art of Worldly Wisdom by Baltasar Gracian.”

(That’s from his review of Chanel Pour Homme, but I’ve always thought he should have reserved it for vintage Bel Ami.)

I’m going to throw in this link to shopgoodwill.com if it’s ok, seemed serendipitous that I just read these comments and headed over to Goodwill to check out perfumes

      https://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions/BelAmi-Toilette-Hermes-Paris-Spray-41040866.html

Not affiliated, obviously. Some really good items show up here sometimes but shipping costs can be ridiculous.

Competitive eating? Sounds like my kind of vacation !!!

My SOTD is Mito. This was a vero.perfumo scent I had once tried and dismissed, but thanks to a fragrant friend insisting that I take a small decant to retry, I realize it is a perfect chypre on me.
    Full bottle is en route

      Lucas!
I tried commenting on your blog (for first time, I discovered it a year ago though, I like your writing a lot, hope to see you do at least another 5 year :), can you find out if I ended up in the spam-bin? Or maybe I did something wrong…then I’ll look at it when I have more time. Still try to find out the relation between WordPress / Gravatar and commenting on all the blogs. Sometimes I have to login, and sometimes a mailadress is sufficient…

Did a quic investigation, it indeed landed in spam folder for some reason. I manually moved it to valid comments – from now on there shouldn’t be a problem.

Jiji, I’m glad to see that someone else also finds this confusing. If a blog asks me to actually log in to a menu of accounts, whatever I try doesn’t seem to work.

…and also what name (nick or real name) /info it shows where when and how.

Now I am not even crazy worried about you guys finding out my real name.
(I use a nick, because its more vice versa, I dont want HR people who google my name when I am job hunting to find my blog comments on top of the page)
….but a lot of people are, and for good reasons!

So they needs to offer a more transparent and usable way to handle it.
I have a lot of experience working with WordPress, so the fact that I cannot figure it out means a lot.
But I think it also depends on the kind of plugin and comment-settings the site-admin uses to handle the gravatar/wp-accounts of the comments.

I’ve found that using Bloglovin’ has helped with any issues I’ve had with logging in or commenting on blogs. You can find most blogs on there, and content arrives in one email as opposed to several. And of course, there’s an app! :)

I haven’t posted much but i have to give a huge thank you to NSt and its commenters/ the perfume community online as a whole.
I’ve been accepted into IFF-ISPICA’s 3-year MSC program in Scent Design and Creation in Versailles, France. I’m so thrilled and excited and didn’t mention it at all before because I was so nervous it wouldn’t happen. I’m 1 of 20 students worldwide who has been accepted. Thank you so much for giving me a place here.
I couldn’t have done it without this blog and community, and everyone who has made it possible to learn about fragrance without having a background.
It’s all too good to be true. Thank you so much for everything.

I wanted to apply to ISIPCA but it just costs too much money and there was only 1 faculty group that had their classes in English (otherwise it was all French)

I’m kind of green with envy now [cries]

About half of what is listed there are FBs that I can make you a sample from, or swap a larger decant. I have an FB of Ambre Fetiche on the way. Comment back here if you want to take it further. :^)

SOTD is deodorant. How exciting! I ran out the door this morning in such a hurry and have a whole list of “tasks” to accomplish. I’m trying not to look at it because it exhausts me! I’ve basically revamped the whole van layout because you live and learn, and I paked a bunch of stuff I didn’t need and missed a lot of stuff that I do need. Like my perfumes!

Robin, have a great time paddleboarding! I still haven’t made it to the upright position and I blame it all on T-Rex! Also haven’t had much of a chance to practice, and then because, you know, SHARKS! Leaving a few days early and I’m going to camp on a lake (with no SHARKS!) and hoping the get a lot of practice there.

I may be a bit unreasonable about SHARKS!????

I am on a lake, which is quite different, but I do most truly believe that if I can manage a paddleboard on a lake, so can anyone on earth. I can even manage it with clothing instead of a bathing suit, if I’m in such a rush to get on a lake — I have never fallen off. And I am the most non-sporty klutz you can imagine.

Paddleboarding in the ocean is probably more than my limited skills would allow.

Just wait until you see how easy it is on a lake!

It is also very calming, for some reason. Kayaking is also peaceful and de-stressing, but paddleboarding is even more so — it clears the mind almost immediately.

La Via del Profumo makes a fragrance that he describes as “anti-sharks.” I’ve always assumed it must be a faulty translation, but maybe sharks don’t like perfume. ;)

You know, I would almost be tempted by that, but it’s not really me I worry about. The dog is still adjusting and is not keen on being in water where she can’t touch the bottom. Hence, a lot of splashing to and fro. I read an article once not long ago by a “shark expert,” who said swimming with dogs is like ringing a dinner bell for sharks. They are the right size prey and they make a lot of “noise” (even “water breeds” that swim quite well) that is irresistible to hungry sharks????

So I have been a surfer in Santa Cruz CA, and getting back to that on the top of my to-do-when-I-retire list :) We have plenty of great whites here. But it’s a whole lot more risky to get in your car to drive to the beach than it is to be out there in the water! So perhaps you can take comfort in that idea.

Or, paint the bottom of your paddleboard to look like the underside of a killer whale. Supposedly sharks give killer whales a wide berth. I do know some surfers who’ve done that!

My package with little decants of Buterbaugh Apollo Hyacinth, TF Vert de Fleur, and Guerlain Charnel Elixir Floral Romantique arrived Monday, so I’m luxuriating. :) I adore Floral Romantique all out of proportion to what it basically is (a very well-blended white floral with a beautiful drydown), but The CEO says, “That smells like your skin, only better,” so.

The Vert de Fleur smells like a green memory of my 70s childhood. Good stuff.

First day back to work from vacation, in which I was off for 6 business days not including yesterday’s holiday. I’m ready to be back to normal.

SoTD will be April Aromatics Tempted Muse because of a funny incident that just occurred. I have perfume samples and decants all over my coffee table, and as I set down my mug full of coffee, some spilled over the sides. It got on one of my perfumes, a long, cylindrical L’Artisan travel spray, so I lifted it to clean it off. A nearby sample had attached itself to the L’Artisan, and as I lifted it, the sample unstuck itself right into my full cup of coffee below! I had to excavate the sample by pouring most of the coffee down the drain. I’m hoping no coffee got inside the sample vial!

I was burning a Pacific French Lilac candle on my kitchen table and an open bar of chocolate was sitting on the same table. I went to eat the chocolate later and it tasted strongly of perfumy lilacs, and not in a good, artisanal kind of way.

I tried paring down my bottles yesterday, and was only able to part with four. Plus one I gave to my daughter ( I think technically that doesn’t count ). Working tonight, thought I would jazz up the place wearing Black Opium shimmer lotion. The other day I smelled Aromatics Elixer on a customer, it smelled so good. I would love to smell the Black Cherry version Jonahob mentioned the other day.

The Black Cherry is not easy to come by…they must have discontinued it for at one point Clinique was selling a full bottle for half price….you might find it on ebay.

After cleaning out my bathroom cabinets and medicine cabinets I decided to bring up some of my full bottles of Dame because a) they look nice and b) I need to start spraying them on my body-LOL! I know the bathroom is the worst possible place to keep them but if I continue to store them in my basement I will never use them…also, it will encourage younger family members to spray as well :)

Good morning (or evening) everybody, I have a question and need ideas. A friend and his family are traveling to Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto). I introduced them to niche perfume, and they’ve kindly offered to bring back something for me.

I know I’ve read a couple of articles about Japanese niche perfumers, but the only one I can find is Parfums Satori, which is now mostly available at Luckyscent. Do you know of any others?

Or any Japan exclusives that might be interesting?

Unfortunately, after I do that, it wants my WordPress.com password. I did have to set up a WordPress account at one point in order to get a gravatar. However, when I try that password, it doesn’t work. I suppose I could try resetting the password, but I’m afraid I might somehow lose the link to the gravatar.

So resetting WordPress password should not have impact on Gravatar or its settings.

I had same issue when I tried to comment on Lucas blog, I reset my WP password and no problems with my gravatar.

The “kyo” they have in common is the character for “capital”: Tokyo is literally “Eastern Capital” and Kyoto is literally “Capital City” (as indeed it was for more than a thousand years, until Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868 and the Imperial household was moved there from Kyoto).

Those paddle boards look lovely! Robin, your vacation sounds like it’s going swimmingly (yes, I’m proud of that awful pun).

I found a little reusable travel squeeze bottle of body wash in the cabinet while going through a purge of bathroom-related products, and decided to use it up so I could wash it out for reuse. I have no idea what it is, but OH MY GOD it’s the most GORGEOUS sandalwood scent!!!! I wish I knew what body wash it is! Very lightly sweet and ambered, but mostly just a wave of sandalwood. I don’t think it’s the l’Occitane sandalwood shower gel; that one’s a bit too sweet and heavy for me. Any other ideas? I’d love to find it again.

Today I’m wearing Lonesome Rider again. A friend gets flowers and gasoline; I get barbecue by a wood fire. Weird, but we both love it.

BB is comforting after yesterday’s celebratory over-exertions. It hovers gently above the skin in a wonderful incense-y way though I don’t get any smoke. It’s sweetly woody, powdery-musky and cool. A pretty bottle too. I want to spend more time with neglected favorites. This is a good one.

SOTD = Coach Leatherware No. 2

Warm peppery spicy leather. The only claim to Sporty is the baseball glove accord. Here’s Angela’s review of all 3 scents in this series, sadly discontinued but I managed to snag all 3 for perfumath free:

    https://nstperfume.com/2013/11/25/coach-leatherware-nos-1-2-and-3-fragrance-review/

In this episode of Don’t you hate it when …:
You’re the only person walking into an empty elevator and it smells like B.O. (dirty socks, fart, bad breath, stale cigarette smoke, alcohol haze) and the elevator picks up other people on another floor and they look judgmental? You are mortified because there’s no one else to blame.

I had similar fears recently when I used the (single stall) bathroom at my doctor’s office the other day. I walked in and it was a freaking MESS (in every way imaginable, including olfactorily.) I spent my time in there trying to figure out how to say “It wasn’t me!” in a convincing way lest someone walk in just as I was walking out. Fortunately, I didn’t have to use the line (and unfortunately I did have to use that nasty bathroom.)

SOTD is Elements of Chi “Fire”, the 3rd of 5 scents supposedly inspired by the 5 elements of ancient Chinese something-or-other.

    Top: red cedar, cinnamon, bitter orange and ginger;
    Mid: rose oil, geranium, red currant and neroli;
Base: cashmere wood, red pepper and moroccan rose.

This one smells okay, if not especially inspired. Each Chinese element has its traditional colour, but choosing the ingredients of a perfume because of their colour is, well, maybe not always a guarantee of a great scent. Anyhow, I can’t get all fired up about it – boom, boom! ;^P

Started this very hot day with Terracota, reapplied with my new sample of Eau de Magnolia, which is lovely, managing to be both fresh and creamy, lovely in the heat, I imagine I’d reach for this a lot if i had a bottle.

I awoke this morning from a dream that I had forgotten my computer password, and that I had a new boss who dumped a huge amount of work on me. Clearly I did not want to return to work today.

I got to work and found that the fan system is set to ‘hurricane’ and nobody seems to know how to make it stop. It’s so loud it’s hard to have a conversation. And it’s cold. I’m bundled up in my office sweater over my summer clothes.

Grump! SOTD is Parfumerie Generale Entre Ciel Et Mer, a light beachy scent. Wish I were at the beach instead of in a howling cold windstorm at work.

Excellent idea, but the fans in question are 20 feet up, somewhere in the ceiling, blowing furiously out the ceiling vents.

My company is moving to a new building at the end of the year; this building will then be torn down to build more condos. I suspect we will be subject to plenty of ‘benign neglect’ by the building owners between now and then….

Morning, all. I’m working at home today because I’m in the sort of testy mood that can escalate a mild disagreement into a full-scale confrontation in about 45 seconds. No idea what’s the matter with me: I’m not the most calm person in Auckland, but I’m not usually so volatile. Ah well, I dare say I’ll recover my equilibrium.

I’m wearing Vanilla Flash: I’ve decided it’s lovely. It sort of bends over me in a wrap of beautiful colours all tightly woven. If I concentrate very hard, I can see the thread of colour that is vanilla, but it’s so much part of a pretty overall pattern that it’s just a glimpse here and there. It’s just right for this miserable day.

Be well and flagrantly fragrant, NST.

There wasn’t anything I really wanted to wear today, so it took me a while to make up my mind! But I’m trying to get to know Eau de Merveilles a little bit better, so that’s where I landed.

Have the house to myself for the next ten days or so, and have Big Dreams about what I can do – anything to avoid my dissertation right? – and fingers crossed that I can realize some of them. (But I’d really just love it if someone replied to one of my MANY job applications, sigh.)

Today I am trying to encourage my enormous tomato plant to do something other than produce flowers. There are 30 flowers on it in various stages and not a single tiny tomato. I have given the plant a stern talking-to, since gentle encouragement did not work, and I am prepared to escalate into scolding if need be. ;-)

Woke up to a gorgeous summer day (which I decided is officially the first day of summer here.) Started by spraying Dame Freesia (did not love,) then the last of a 28 La Pausa decant (which I do like very very much,) then accidentally drenched myself in O de Lancôme (which I also do not love.)

I’d really like a cologne-style summer fragrance that is citrusy, but without oakmoss (or other mosses) and without spices. Am I just barking up the wrong perfume tree? Any recommendations?

Will be Cristalle or No 19 later, me thinks.

What have you tryied that was too mossy or spicy? I think there are tons of citrusy things out there. Have you tried Chanel Eau de Cologne or any of the Guerlain colognes? Or the Hermes Eaux (Rhubarb, Orange Verte, Pamplemousse Rose, etc.)

For orange, try AA Mandarine Basilic or Atelier Orange Sanguine. For lime, AA Herba Fresca is amazing! Probably my favorite summer perfume. For lemon, try Carthusia Mediterraneo, Fresh Brown Sugar or Lemon Sugar (maybe too sweet, but I love the lemon in Brown Sugar), or Lostmarch Din Dan. PdN makes several summery Eaux as well – L’eau Mixte is one of my faves. Also check any of the Aqua Allegorias, Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom

Too mossy: O de Lancôme (I am a moss wimp)
Too spicy: all of the citrus Ateliers

I’ve not tried the Chanel Eau de Cologne and maybe I should. I have tried almost all of your other suggestions (I love Mediterraneo and have a bottle of the Pacifica I should pull out again.) Like Goldilocks, I’m looking for something that’s just right :) I do recall being fond of Fresh Brown Sugar (with the very green lemon note.) Maybe I should try that one again.

Agree that Orange Sanguine and Cedrat Enivrant are great citrus scents, also Oolang Infini and Grand Neroli.

The sample set from Atelier Cologne is one my favorite purchases ever. So many scents to try. You might be surprised to find you like the non-citrusy ones as much or more than the citrus. I enjoy Bois Blonds, Trefle Pur, and Mistral Patchouli.

I see what you mean, the Ateliers can be a bit heavy considering they are cologne-style. What about Jour d’Hermes? It works for me as a cologne-adjacent citrus-y fragrance in the warm weather.

I’m in box of eels and a small dab of Avon Wild Country, from a yellow, car-shaped bottle. It’s from the 70’s or 80’s, from what I see on eBay and Etsy.
Found it this morning at a consignment shop, and it’s not bad, kinda soft and powdery.
It’s yellow, smells nice, was five bucks and it made me giggle. I guess that’s all I needed from my fragrance today. I probably just lost any perfume cred I may have had…

It’s a well-blended non-indolic jasmine. I find it reminiscent of Guerlain Chant d’Arômes–but more floral/less woody. I really like it.
