Thursday scent of the day 6/29

Posted by Robin on 29 June 2017 263 Comments

vintage Chanel glasses

Hey, Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am wearing a dab of Chanel Bois des Iles from my lovely little extrait bottle.

Reminder: 6/30 will be Bottle Porn Friday...wear a fragrance that you bought because you were drawn to the aesthetics of the bottle, or just wear a fragrance from a bottle you think is perfect. Suggested by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the vintage "Extremely rare Chanel "CHANEL PARIS" logo frame sunglasses" are $6500 at 1stDibs.

I’m wearing Alien eau Sublime. I love the ombre effect of this bottle. I also love the way it smells. It smells like lemon, with a touch of Alien. I think even people who don’t like Alien, would like this version. Hope everyone has a great day.

I almost always enjoy the Alien flankers more than the original Alien.

Pairing Wood Sage & Sea Salt with Peony & Suede Blush because I love the heft and simplicity of the Jo Malone bottles….plus, this is a really nice combo!

Today I’m in a tiny dab of vintage Poison Esprit de Parfum, which shook the world in 1985 almost as much for its dark purple poisoned-apple bottle and green snake-print box as it did for its potency. (Honourable mention to 2005’s Amulet presentation: I thought it had gone off because it had been reformulated to give it an unexpected and unwelcome fresh top note, but after that the scent’s pretty much the same and the dagger bottle in the envy-green pouch is spectacular.)

Wearing Grace by Grace Coddington x CdG from a sample. I do love that cat bottle but the scent, not so much (yawn). Also runs a little too sour on me. Fortunately, it also fades very quickly so will top it off with Pacifica Persian Rose later, which I have in my bag. If they made a mini of that cute bottle, I’d snap it up.

I’ve never bought anything for the bottle so I’m wearing the juice from my accidental-favorite bottle, Tocca’s Colette. I have the 20ml and I love it – it’s pretty, it’s just the right size for me (wish everything came in 20ml) and the sprayer is just what I like – a fine mist that covers a small area rather than misting the entire room. I wish I liked more of the Tocca scents, but for me it’s Colette or bust.

The 50ml bottles are adorable – I might spring for one after I make my way through my 20ml. The 10ml splash bottles are also really cute – I bought Cleopatra in that size, but wound up giving it to my mom.

Yosh White Flowers on one wrist and Ginger Ciao on the other from samples….looking to see if I’d be bestowing an enabler pin in ElisaP for the Hautelook heads up. Don’t think so. Unless I decide to blind buy Sottile as a gift for a rose-loving friend.

Back last night from whirlwind Philadelphia trip. The rat fink cat, who pretended illness because of the suitcases, is fine. Beautiful town, great time with friends. Tired feet. Two cheesesteaks – liked Pat’s best. Bus ride to and from was smooth and easy – I felt bad for the train travelers yesterday…lots of delays on NE corridor. They’re paying a LOT more than we did and probably got home much later.

Ah. No I took apart the box and there wasn’t another sprayer so I imagine it’s a newer bottle. I bought it from NM and the photo shows the bottle with a cap not a bulb sprayer.

If the bulb atomizer is not just right for you it might be worth a call or email to customer service at NM (or even to Guerlain) to ask if they would help you be a more happy customer.

I have two original Hiram Green fragrances that have the bulb. One seems to be okay but the Moon Bloom is deplorable. All the perfume seeps out of the piece below the bulb, the perfume itself has turned a extremely deep dark brown and there is now only a little left because most of it has evaporated. I will never again buy any kind of perfume that has a bulb atomizer.

I wonder if that is why the bottles have changed, because of ththe atomizer issues? Moon Bloom is so pretty.

I am wearing Bois d’Iris, by The Different Company.

I needed to smell a bit polite. Had a meeting that lasted almost 4 hours. This one is not loud, but I can easily smell myself and enjoy the iris, flowers, and slightly spicy woods.

It is not the most eye catching bottle, but I like the minimalistic design, the heavy cap, good sprayer, and that 50 ml size supports good firm grip.

Oh yes i am thoughtful about that.
I once had to sit through a meeting next to someone who wore an awful fragrance with too much sillage.
So I try to avoid being that person that everyone hates because of perfume.
Though I cannot imagine someone disliking Bois d’iris ;)

Mmm. Love Bois d’Iris. I’ve never seen a FB IRL, but in photos they look quite unattractive to my eye. (What particularly bothers me is the mixing of fonts, which are also not great fonts.) It’s always perplexed me, as I read somewhere that JCE hired whomever designed them and gave him full artistic freedom with no budget constraints. If it were me, I’d send him back to the drawing table as I find the design rather amateurish and almost silly.

All of that said, good to hear they’re nice to hold and spray! :) I wouldn’t mind owning a few TDC bottles, myself. (And maybe they’re quite different IRL.)

Yes their font choices are totally weird.
I have a newer bottle with a more minimalistic label, and it does not bother me. Logo and name of the perfume. Thats it.

But the older ones had half a book printed on them in 3 different fonts. I dont understand that design decision either. It looks amateuristic!

I’m trying Calling all Angels today and very intrigued. I’ve not spent much time with the incense note, and those I have I’ve not enjoyed, but this is different, more floral and amber?. I like it! I think our 70 degree weather works well with this as well. Amazing staying power for an all natural scent.

SotD: Guerlain Vetiver eau Glacée. This was my first scent purchase after moving to Miami. I bought it at the local corner drug store. It is a lovely citrus vetiver with a refreshing minty note–it has the simplicity and clarity of an early Aqua Allegoria. Not as good as the original, but very lovely none the less.

I had a great time at training in Orlando trying out the samples my husband chose for me. The winners: Ume and Cuir d’Iris. Ooh, a full bottle of Cuir d’Iris may be in my future. The amber that shows up late in the drydown is divine. Not so great: Au Couer du Desert, but I think that was due to season, heat and humidity. I look forward to re-trying it in cooler weather.

Millenial in a summery mid-thigh A-line dress and ankle boots and no hose. Oh, don’t get me started! Every year I’m venting on the stuff women wear to work during summer. Millenials get a pass, most times, but it’s the more senior members of our co. that are out of they’re minds with some of what they wear to work. It’s embarrassing.

Now I’m trying to visualize what “more seniors” are wearing.

I was out on a beautiful actual for-real hot day in Seattle last weekend and saw people wearing all kinds of unflattering and flat-out ugly getups. Summer dressing doesn’t bring out the best of what is generally a not terribly well-dressed population from coast-to-coast, it seems.

The latest trend with the senior women who will be speaking is to find out the color of the walls or backdrop and wearing something matchy-matchy or complimentary. How else to explain 3 out of 7 wearing bright orange. Oh and if you KNOW you are a panelist and you will be seated on a raised platform with no table in front of you, you have no business wearing a body hugging mid-thigh dress and no hose, especially if you have thunder thighs.

Dragging through the most boring writing assignments in the universe. My best friend is beginning the cold cruel lonely first steps of separation and divorce. I am totally partisan, of course, but she’s been really hurt badly. I wish I was with her (she’s in another state).

Grey and cold outside, so cheering myself up with Narciso edt, the black top–other than that I cannot be sure what it is!

For the theme of the week, I have my memory of a bottle of Secrete Datura that I drained decades ago. It was this bottle, but the photo does not really do it justice at all: http://www.perfumeemporium.com/BigPics_w/Secrete-datura-w.jpg

It is a hard scent memory to describe. I recall it being a complicated but totally not sweet (dry!) floral, a tiny hint of powder, dusted with unsweetened cocoa powder–imagine that but as an expensive elegant perfume. It was not creamy or a gourmand–extremely elegant.

Like many people this week, today I’m in Eau des Merveilles. I have a 7.5 mL mini of this, which is a teeny perfect replica of the full size bottle, but I like it enough that I want a full size. Also one of Ambre des Merveilles. Then I can have TWO great bottles! ;)

It is unfortunately not a spray, but a splash, and the cap is kind of hard to get off, which is annoying.

That EdM mini cap IS hard to get off. But does the cap have the little loop so you can wear it on a cord around your neck? :)

My Zeste de Soleil disappeared after about 20 minutes. Good thing I ended up with a 100 ml bottle after all. I then wandered over to my miniature-bottle shelf and splashed on some Eau des Merveilles.

I’m sampling Sel Marin this morning. I was not impressed initially, but I went for a walk and as I warmed up it started smelling more complex and quite nice. I don’t need a bottle, but I enjoyed wearing it. For salty I already have EdM.

I’ve been entertaining myself for the last week with a large number of samples given me by a lovely NSTer. A number of them are from lines I hadn’t even heard of, so it’s been a lot of fun to expand my knowledge a bit of the perfume world…

Not on bottle porn theme this week; at the moment I have on a dash of Pacific Thai Lemongrass (exactly what you would expect) and on the other arm a dab of Creed Adventus for Her. The notes for the Creed sound like such a disastrous mishmash that I was certain I’d hate it upon application. Instead, it just made me laugh. (It’s still disastrous, tho; I’ll be scrubbing shortly.)

    Happy Thursday, everyone!

Thai Lemongrass is so good…it was discontinued quite a few years ago…I consider the Pacifica bottles as part of bottle porn because-
      A) the packaging is so gorgeous
      B) they put beautiful and unique designs on the bottles
      C) the bottles are a perfect size (1oz) and fit nice in your hands
      D) the sprayer unscrews so the bottle can be reused as a decant for anything

but that’s just my humble opinion…YMMV….

Pacifica has discontinued some of their best scents. :(
I do like the bottles — didn’t mean to imply a diss there. I sprayed the Thai Lemongrass from a decant, so the packaging wasn’t on my mind when I commented.

I know..all of my favorites are gone…Avalon Juniper, Mexican Cocoa, Madagascar Spice, Egyptian Bergamot Rose, California Star Jasmine, Vanilla Vera Cruz, Bali Lime Papaya, Nerola Orange Blossom, Tunisian Jasmine….I am sure there will be more on the chopping block! Also, the candles I think are being discontinued…they were so good too!

Well, I think I know what you mean… Thai Lemongrass is very green, as you’d expect, with a bit of ginger for “heat.” It’s zingy, but I don’t read it as particularly sour or spicy hot (or shrimpy, either… :D )

Was going commando as I head off to the dentist for a check up, though I do smell the dregs of yesterday’s Black Flower Mexican Vanilla.

But I couldn’t leave the house without something scented. Just had a spritz of Chanel Eau de Cologne. I have a decant that’s almost empty. The tall Les Exclusifs bottle and cologne are nicely matched in their quotidian elegance.

Feeling thankful it’s Thursday almost FriYAY!

28 La Pausa EDT- love the scent and love the bottle- it fits nicely in my hand (I’ve got 75 ml one), heavy glass, magnetic cap and lovely spraying mechanism- bottle porn at its best, but I bought it strictly for the scent :)
I got a package today- Guerlain Angelique Noire, YEEEEEY!!! MY first Guerlain ever! (and not the last!!!) It is only a travel spray, so no bottle porn here, but the scent is dreamy.

Those are very unattractive sunglasses. On another note, a bottle of BdI extrait will be MINE someday. Just you wait.

Woke up quite late (08:00) this morning, after two days of 6am trainings. *streeeeeetch* That was nice. Forgot about the community project and am happily enrobed in four sprays of Iris Fauve. I’m not a fan of the Atelier des Ors bottles, but I do love the gimmicky gold flakes. It’s fun snowglobing the bottles.

Congrats on getting through that training! My H’s normal work hour is 6; the past few weeks he’s had to be there at 5. I don’t know how he does it, but he does, and is completely un-cranky about it, too.

(Actually, I do know – he often falls asleep before 8, and almost always before 9. In all the years I woke up daily at 6 – without an alarm, no less – my sleep pattern never caught up with me. I’d fall asleep at 11-11:30, and very occasionally 10:30, so I was in a perpetual state of sleep deprivation. And couldn’t sleep in on weekends, either.)

In an effort to wear neglected bottles, I pulled out L’Artisan Parfumeur Mon Numéro 8. I can’t even describe it as a skin scent as it was so faint upon application I couldn’t detect any particular notes and it completely vanished without a trace within an hour. Moving on – time for some Timbuktu, which has a lot more heft.

Spritzed Hermes Muguet Porcelaine this morning and wafted in its lovely watery-green-aloe for the 20 minutes it lasted. Not quite porn, but very nice bottles, from the 4 ml sample to the massive 6.8 oz.

Am now wearing the porniest of bottle porn: Diptyque Essences Insensées 2015. Stunning bottle; totally impractical with its bulb atomizer. (And thanks to the super generous and kind NSTer who decanted some for me!)

Yesterday I participated in Lolita Lempicka L’Eau en Blanc. I have a real soft spot for the adorable little Lempicka minis, but yesterday I sprayed. A lot. 1 drenching before getting dressed; a 2nd after. Then a good spraydown on my scarf. I was out running around yesterday and got occasional whiffs from my scarf and that was about it. It wears incredibly sheerly on me, but I normally wear it at night when it’s not so much an issue.

Ecume de Rose because it’s one of my favourite roses plus it comes in a bottle with tassels. I’m surprising myself by enjoying tassels on perfume bottles so much as I’m not into such things as a rule, but I’ve become completely enamoured with tassels on bottels.

SOTD is Memo “Luxor Oud”. Memo bottles are plain enough as bottles, but the appllied decoration lifts them to another level.

    Top: mandarine and patchouli;
    Mid: desert rose and fruity notes;
    Base: labdanum and oud.

It’s very nice indeed when first applied, but severly lacking in lasting power. So, not for me.

Bottle porn SOTD was Creed Love in Black. Because I like violet, and it’s a nice one with great longevity (unusual for violet). And because I love black bottles for feminine-marketed frags. Especially when I find them for a good price online!
