Wednesday scent of the day 6/21

Posted by Robin on 21 June 2017 290 Comments

Green Tomato

It's Hump Day and the Summer Solstice. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm (late again) in Annick Goutal Folavril, from Angie's Top 10 Summer Fragrances 2010.

Reminder: On 6/23, wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Summer Solstice!

Love your fragrance, Robin! Folavril was another bottle I drained years ago and so sad that it is discontinued.

MASSIVE SAMPLING this morning- Myths Woman, Manguier Metisse, Iris Pallida, Amber & Spices, Vent Vert, Ubar Woman, Pluriel, L’Infante, Finisterre, Nyphe des Bois, Iri Dell, Afganistan Orange Blossom, Cuir de Lancolme, Hedonist Iris, Journey Woman, Cuir Cannage, Diorling, Scent, efflor esce, After the Flood, My Queen, White Rose, Sballo, Rahele and Eau de Soir.

Tiny amounts from the top of my knuckles to the top of my arms front to back.

My favorite of the bunch is efflor esce

A co-worker of mine stopped me to say that she loved the smell of my “lotion” :)

I have a few drops of Folavril left, and likewise, sad!

And WOW. I think you already win Wednesday.

And just some random info on Folavril if anyone is interested- it was the very first Annick Goutal fragrance and it was named after the antique shop that Annick owned and ran in the 1970s.

Interesting. Can u tell me if Folavril (or I could be thinking of a different Goutal!) is similar to Corsica Furiosa?, I know they share tomato leaf, does the similarity end there? thanks!

I would tell you if I could but I have never tried Corsica Furiosa! Folavril had a sweetness to it due to the mango note so it wasn’t all about the tomato leaf.

At least to my wonky nose from what I remember…maybe someone who has sampled both recently can chime in!

I am so glad that you bought a bottle!!! I was going to encourage you to do that but then did not want to enable as I myself am on a no buy. But they sell for a “songe” at the online discounters so it was practically free, right? Now you can spray with reckless abandonment :)

You know, on paper Folavril is everything I like. I was so excited to try it. On me it is just way too soapy. Like detergent.

I’m happy to send what remains of my 5ml STC decant to anyone interested. First person to email me at lonic 31 on the hawt mail (no spaces) can have it. CONUS only.

For today I’m feeling Bombay Bling. Such a fun scent for the first day of summer.

Growing up my parents were health nuts to the extreme and the only bread they’d use was Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. I used to try and trade my sandwiches at school but not many takers! I like it better as an adult. The English muffins are good.

For those reasons and others, my mom baked bread when I was a child. Heavy, brick-like, super dense, loaves from wheat she ground herself. It was generally slathered with fresh-ground unsalted peanut butter from the health food store. And jam that was often “off” to the point of fermenting.

Needless to say, no one at school wanted to eat it, including me – or anything else from my lunchbox. (I’ll add that a friend’s mom made the most delicious hearty handmade wheat bread that, at the same age, I loved, and still wish I could figure out how to reproduce.)

And, yes, it took decades for me to come around to wanting to eat anything but fluffy, squishy, white white white bread. I used to buy those Ezekiel English muffins and they’re really good – I also appreciate the texture. I love chewy stuff in my toasted breads.

I’ve seen Ezekiel breads in the freezer section of my grocery store, but have never tried it, mostly because I’m always afraid that it will be dry and tasteless after having been frozen. Perhaps I need to try it after all!

Bread generally freezes really well. I think they’re in the freezer because they don’t have preservatives, thus not a long shelf life. I bake my own sandwich bread, slice it, and put it in the freezer with no quality loss.

I bake my own bread too, using 50/50 whole wheat and white flour. It keeps just fine in the fridge for a week or so (we go through a loaf a week).

Wearing Prada Infusions d’Oranger – the original, not the re-release ( which I am dying to try)
Everyone talk about how this is such a clean OB scent, but it is summer appropriate skank on me.
    I love it.

I am pretty sure you just sent some decant and chocolate to me in Canada. :) ( tkeefe)
I appreciate the thought, but wouldn’t the postage to Canada be astronomical??

I’m commando right now since I am taking a sick day, with the reoccurance of a stomach issue I battled last month. I am tired of aromatics and citrus forward fragances already and I am trying to think of the right light floral to wear. I don’t think my stomach can take anything heavy.

Today’s combo: a bit of Kiehl’s Original Musk + a neroli perfume oil by an indie company called Sarabecca. The oil is a gorgeous, all-natural, spicy-herbal neroli. Other notes include geranium and lemon. Sadly, like all the best nerolis, it has near-zero longevity on my skin.

And, in honor of the solstice, a song that always brings summer to my mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf4YyXVoWeA

I’ve smelled that Sarabecca and it is nice and natural smelling. Sounds like a nice combo-I’m a fan of Khiel’s. I would think the musk might help the longevity of the neroli?

You know, I think you might be right. The neroli does seem to have just the tiniest bit of extra oomph when layered with the Kiehl’s.

I’m joining the Goutal crew today in Ninfeo Mio. It’s definitely in my top 10 for summer, and it brings back memories of my boyfriend’s dad’s wedding 5 years back. It took place on the property of this beautiful tudor estate, and the small group of family that attended all stayed in the house that night. I wore NM and also got to experience real gardenia flowers for the first time. It was a super memorable and fun time.

I have so many memories of that night… walking through the massive back yard at night in the dark and freaking out about bats being overhead, the beautiful room we stayed in with wood walls. And the bride’s family are very musical so we all hung out in the private dining space, and they played and sang bluegrass. It was like an open mic situation so we were also treated to the recitation of an original poem that was Poe-esque and went on for about 10 min. That will always stick with me as the guy who recited it was sooo pretentious.

Well, Ninfeo Mio doesn’t have any gardenia. It is just tied to my gardenia experience. ???? It’s lemon and fig. Full note list: citron, lemon, petitgrain, bitter orange, galbanum, lavender, lentisque, fig, lemon wood, musk.

It strikes a good balance, I think. It’s light enough that it’s not oppressive in summer but not so light that it doesn’t work in cooler weather.

Officially hot in the UK, the hottest June day since 1976!, somewhere in the 30’s. People arriving at Glastonbury have been treated by paramedics because of the heat.
I was wearing Verveine by L’Occitane, but it has long since vanished.
I’m feeling very summery, (albeit limp and wilted,) in a white embroidered cotton voile sundress, with an embroidered vintage belt, . Enjoying a new lipstick the new Nars Orgasm one, it’s really pretty and easy to wear.

Good morning and happy summer, all! I haven’t posted here in a while — I was sick with a perfume-negating head cold for a bit, and then very busy, and then away on vacation. I hope you’re all well! Today I’m in one of my “guilty pleasure” scents: Philosophy Falling In Love. I smell like sun-warmed blackberries and tart greenery. This one takes me back — it was the first perfume I ever bought for myself, in my early 20s, and smelling it now reminds me of carefree summer days, working in the Sierras and swimming in the river near my cabin and feeling the world full of dewy promise. Life has gotten more complex since then, but the mountains and river and dewy promise are still there, and I still like smelling like a sophisticated child in this fragrance from time to time.

I really like it, which is weird as it’s pretty far outside of my typical tastes. Though, smelling my arm right now, it has a watery greenness in common with the Hermes Jardin series, which I do like. Do try it!

Osmanthe Yunnan for another warm day here. I have brushed four five-gallon buckets of winter fur off the dog this week and he seems much happier. Only his hind legs and chest to go! I suppose I would be happier, too, if I were wearing a heavy coat in 85F heat and then took it off.

Today I am wearing the scent that was one of my first ones down the rabbit hole more than 10 years ago: L’Artisan Figuier Extreme. I still love it though I don’t pull it out very often. I know many people prefer Philosykos but this is still my favorite fig. It’s great for summer as an alternative to the citrus styles.
We are preparing for Tropical Storm Cindy here on the Texas Gulf Coast, and may have flooding. Good luck to others who are more in its path and might get wind and tornadoes.

    SOTD is .vero.profumo “Rozy EdP”.

Notes are rose, peach, passionfruit, lilac, honey, sandalwood, hyacinth, tarragon and powdery notes.

I don’t like it as much as yesterday’s Mito EdP, nor as much the Onda EdP I own already. The opening is confused, before the notes resolve themselves (insofar as they manage to).

Hello, NST everywhere. I posted on Tuesday, but somehow it didn’t “take”, and yesterday I was ill with what I am pleased to call delayed jet lag, but was probably a new species of migraine. Here I am today, though, large as life, or possibly a little larger–travel broadened me in more ways than the best ones!

At the beginning of the year,,I spent days and weeks writing feedback on a doctoral thesis and helping the candidate panel best the damn thing into shape. Well, today’s main task is to accompany the student through her viva, so my SOTD is the (fairly) discreet, gorgeous and infinitely comforting Black Cashmere. It’s perfect for this miserable winter’s day, perfect for sitting still and willing my student to be SENSIBLE when she answers the examiners, and actually, just perfect all round. I’ve anchored it today with some BC body lotion that was in the samples bag lovely Foxbins gave me, and I smell heavenly.

So, I’m well returned from holiday, and feeling rested and set up for the oncoming semester. I’m going to a Matariki celebration tonight, always deeply moving. Life is good. Damp underfoot and blustery around corners, but good. Be well, all.

Doesn’t it? I wear it year-round, but it needs heat to fully flesh out. (I don’t get the chalky note in winter, for instance.) It’s crazy how long that stuff lasts on my skin. It’s usually still going strong for up to 24 hrs. Is it like that on you?

I agree on Alaia needing warmth to be at its best. I tried it this past winter, and it was a pale shadow of its summer self. Not sure I get 24 hours longevity from it, though. I’ll have to pay attention tomorrow to see if it is still hanging around.

Alaia lasts an incredible amount of time on me. Last week my husband and I went out to dinner, and I sprayed this for the occasion. The next morning at 9:30am, while working out, I could still smell its gorgeous remnants on me.

Woke up to warmer weather with a bit of sun peeking out, and a good dose of Ginestet Botrytis. I only discovered this at the tail end of last summer and it seemed perfect for that time of year. Works for the first peek at summer, too.

It’s gone and I’ve transitioned to Cristalle EDP, which arrived in the mail today. I won the bottle in an auction and wasn’t really paying attention to size – I just wanted the EDP, which I have in a little dab mini and was desperate to spray. It’s a 100 ml bottle which is GINORMOUS. I’m 5’10” with large hands, and I’d venture to guess petite women might need both hands to spray this stuff on. Anyhoo, YUM! and now I have a lifetime supply :)

Enjoying this week’s theme and am taking lots of notes! (and adding lots of bottles, decants and samples to virtual carts ;) )

It is a record week of toastiness here, people. Good thing it wasn’t summer until today. ???? What kind of a dummy ends up with all sorts of appointments in desert heat like this? Oh, that’s right: me.

SOTD is the crisp and refreshing N°5 L’Eau.

Stay cool and hydrated if you’re in the heat, dry if you’re facing a hurricane, and firmly on the ground if you’re facing tornadoes.

Eau de Protection again, in my new boots, deep red lipstick, and black chandelier earrings, counting down the days til autumn, The Best Season. Sigh.
