Thursday scent of the day 6/8

Posted by Robin on 8 June 2017 237 Comments

Froot Loops boxers

Hey, it's Almost-Friday! Plus, Frank Lloyd Wright's birthday and World Oceans Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing 'unruly, intense' fruit with Byredo Pulp.

Reminder: 6/9 will be Fruity Friday! (A repeat from 2014.) Wear something fruity. Doesn't have to be a fruity floral, just something with plenty of fruit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Froot Loops boxers are apparently sold out at Amazon, but you can still find the same style in Frosted Flakes, Flamingo, Rice Krispies, Donut, and plenty more, around $10-12 a pair.

I’m bummed I passed on a bottle of Escada Ibiza Hippie on eBay. I really liked that one when it came out. Not even sure I’d still like it but the memory jog would’ve been fun. So hard to find now.

SOTD Ava Luxe Bohemian Rose from the generosity of CobraRose. I’ve always wanted to try Ava Luxe so was happy to see these posted in the freebie meet. This one is quite pretty: deep rose, a little powdery, with a resinous dry down of sorts. Very natural smelling. Maybe too heavy for warm weather so wanted to get it in before the upcoming heat wave.

I have a long standing, deep love for Ava Luxe No. 23, which is unfortunately discontinued. I have liked many others from this line – they are good quality, and thoughtfully made. I am sad that I can’t get No. 23 anymore, though, and am now spritzing from my small bottle in short, miserly bursts. :-)

Ava Luxe doesn’t get nearly enough attention. The Vanilla Musk is an almost perfect dupe for Tihota, and the Honey is a beautiful, rich concoction. The Moroccan Mint Tea is fantastic in the summer

I’m not a huge vanilla lover, especially as a central note (so not quite sure I love Love’s True Bluish Light, also included and the one I was most curious about). I do want to try her other musks, though. They all seem like high quality materials, though. Even the Mango which I didn’t like. The Olibanum was the 4th and that one smells really natural and meditative.

Sucraebeille makes a Tihota dupe. I’ve tried her Lush dupes and they’re very good. And she’s much less expensive than Ava Luxe so a blind buy isn’t a big investment.

The OJ is winning this battle of the perfumes, but I think I’m having a reaction. I ended up taking a nap, and I really didn’t want to. It’s odd, and only one other perfume has made me sleepy; a decant of No 1 Clive Christian. Either it’s just a weird coincidence, or there’s a similar note in each that I react to. Has this happened to anyone else with perfume?

Hello over there! I have an Amouage Bracken question, please. Did you try the woman version? Some people mention the chamomile note. Did that compete with the fern? I imagine it woukd be nicely blended, though.
I can’t decide wheter to try Bracken man or Bracken woman. The wise person would try samples of both.

I’ve only tried the Woman, and I can’t remember any chamomile in it. I tend not to like the Men’s versions of the Amouages as much as the Women’s so I sort of gave up trying both a while ago.
It’s been a while since I tried it, but I remember it as sort of abstract greenery, and strong, and a tad too linear for my tastes. But the only real answer is that you should maybe try both. Just wait till your “Pantone” cold gets better, you might not want to creat the wrong scent association. I actually like what I’m wearing today much more than Bracken. True it’s not a grand parfum, but it’s fun, and very fruity.

Sounds good to me! In winter I often go to my brother’s house in Central Otago where the dams freeze up. We sometimes go out at night and make big burning torches out of sticks and brush and then skate across the ice in the pitch dark , listening as the ice makes that terrific hollow whooop whoop noise and cracking sounds. Just magic.

Good morning, I’m cheap and cheerful in Demeter Bubblegum. I got a tester with the idea that after one spray I would pass it on to my teenage niece, but she will not be inheriting this little beauty! It starts out straight up pink Bazooka, then some cinnamon emerges and even a little incense-y note. I love it.

I started the day in Angeliques sous la Pluie, and as always when I spray from my decant I thought “Mmmmm. Why don’t I have a full bottle of this?” An hour later, I remember why – it’s already gone. If I win the lottery I’ll buy a big bottle just for that glorious hour.

After a shower, will probably wear Philosykos. The sun is out after a week of rain, and Philosykos is calling my name. First fruit of the week!

I love Frank Lloyd Wright’s work – I lived in the midwest for 10 years so I was lucky to be able to see a lot of his work. But my favorite is in Arizona – Taliesin West.

Do you prefer one over the other? I am recently in love with it as well. Unsure which sample made its way to me so not sure which version I’ve been wearing.

          • Elizabeth says:

I own the EDT, as I didn’t even know the EDP existed, but I do own EDP as well in several travel vials. I mainly wear the EDT as it’s more accessible, and I haven’t done a side by side. I’ve heard people say the lasting power on the EDP is much better, but I haven’t really found that lasting power was a big issue for me in the EDT. Here is what Victoria from Bois de Jasmin has to say…”Encouraged by my success with L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, I tried the EDP versions of Philosykos and Do Son. I found the EDTs interesting, but too linear and one-dimensional. Unlike with L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, these EDP concentrations change the accents, but don’t add more lines to the story. Do Son feels creamier and warmer, an etude of white petals soaked in coconut milk. Philosykos, on other hand, starts out green and fresh, only to become sappy and woody. If you love the fig leaf coyness of the EDT, you’ll find the EDP similarly charming. However, I miss the transparency and crystalline freshness in the new take. As I wear the EDP, I realize that those were the traits that made Philosykos appealing.”

            8 June 2017 at 12:34 pm

I bought the EdT. It is so green and refreshing, that I knew I needed it for hot summer days. I did not think twice about it. Thank you!

SOTD is Tom Ford “Plum Japonais”.

Notes are plum, saffron, cinnamon, immortelle, plum blossom, camellia, oud, amber, benzoin, fir and vanilla.

I prefer this one to any of the neon-coloured shockers I’ve tried this week. However, it either has no lasting power or else I quickly become anosmic to it after spraying. If I sniff my wrists, it’s beautiful, but I am not the kind of guy who wants to go around sniffing his wrists all day. My perfumes need to work for their living, dammit! :^D

Non-fruity again today in my dear old friend, vintage Tabac Blond EDT. The sprayer on my decant is beginning to fail, and the level of juice is getting low, so soon it will run out and I will be very sad … but thanks to a kind NSTer (or two), I have some of the extrait to see me through my mourning period. And then again, there’s always Vol de Nuit extrait – my newest love. :)

SOTD: Rose Rebelle Respawn, and lots of it! I find if I do 5 full sprays it lasts throughout the day and is a gorgeous dusty, cocoa rose.

SOTD is Vero Perfumo Naja from my sample. After Kevin’s review I felt compelled to try it even though I was afraid it might be another Unattainable Love like Onda. Happy to say, it’s not love! Like, yes. Plus it has a supposed melon note, so I’m on theme for once.

I loved Onda as well, but strangely could not wear it. Sounds completely weird, but it was too much of an olfactory experience for me to wear comfortably. I would take off the cap and sniff it, and be amazed at the smell, but couldn’t bring myself to spray it on. It is undoubtedly beautiful, but it also has a quality of, I dunno, “power” that I didn’t feel right having on my skin. Wonder Woman could wear it, I bet. Hey! Maybe you’re related!

Ha! No relation to WW except in my imagination. Certainly agree Onda is not an everyday perfume, which is one of the reasons I haven’t bought a FB (plus, the price!????). As much as I love the VdE, it just wouldn’t be good value for money, at least for me. However, another decant is a distinct possibility!

Flopper, I hope you enjoy them. It’s a bit confusing as Onda (as well as most of her other scents) comes in a variety of concentrations- edp, VdE, and extrait. I haven’t tested all of them but I can say Onda in the edp and VdE are completely different animals. The VdE is heartbreakingly beautiful (to me, anyway. Some are not fans) but the edp is just nice to my nose. YMMV ????

Waffling on what might be a like and what might be a love. Daim Blond might only work in ~70 degree weather or cooler, and we don’t get a lot of that here…

Very good morning, NST. It’s raining today in Columbia Gorge, but it doesn’t seem to matter at all, because I have very hot tea and the fresh lemony zing of Chanel Eau de Cologne to push me into our planned activities. Actually, even if a proper storm came up, I wouldn’t care. I can’t remember the last time I felt so unpressured. I just wish I had more perfume choices with, but Sunday will cure that. Wonderful things await me in Portland.

We are getting good reports of Dakkie. He has now shown his furry underside to the cat sitter and taught her how to do a two-handed tummy rub, and he is eating well, so the home front is holding up. Be well, all.

Squirrels, lots and lots of squirrels! I know Americans (and Europeans too, most likelyh think they are noxious pests, but right now, we’re in withdrawal from an overload of cuteness: there were teeny, teeny baby squirrels everywhere we went today, with their beady little eyes and assertive tails. Americans may deplore: these Kiwis adore.

As per the American nutrition labels (may be different in NZ), two servings of oatmeal (1 cup before preparation) , with two servings of peanut butter (4 tablespoons) .
I measure the oatmeal, heaping tablespoons, don’t measure the peanut butter.

I love peanut butter with oatmeal! I measure the oatmeal, eyeball the water, a splash of milk, add one heaping tablespoon of peanut butter, a banana and some chocolate. I microwave the whole thing on high for 3 minutes on the highest power, stir, put it back in for 6 minutes at 50% power. Perfect every time and only 1 bowl to wash!

    hee-hee, I lol’d at those boxers.

SotD = Infusion d’Iris edt, day 5. Still enjoying loyalty to this lovely iris scent. I added a dab of Eau des Merveilles for World Oceans Day. Spent yesterday evening with Mon Precieux Nectar. My devotion to Id’I is wavering.

Debating Un Jardin sur le Nil or Insolence EdT for Frooty Friday. Green mango or pink raspberry? Both have a bit of iris . . . what to do . . .
    does it matter? . . . maybe . . .
    a thought for today:

Enjoyed the link! It’s such a “human” thing to try to define objective universal changes as “good” or “bad.” Things happen, and as the happenings happen, observe them, and let them go. Leave good and bad alone! If that makes sense…????

With June Gloom in full force, I just can’t bring myself to wear fruity perfumes this week. FM Une Rose today. I love Frank Lloyd Wright. Anyone who is interested and hasn’t been should check out his home and studio in Oak Park, IL. Several of his designs in the neighborhoods there too.

No perfume yet today. I was out doing some much neglected yardwork, so I am currently wearing Eau de Sueur ;) Post-shower, I think I will break out one of my vintage perfume nips. I am taking a week of stay-at-home vacation this week and using it to catch up on stuff.

I had to put away the flowing rayon pants and short-sleeved tops because it’s showery and cool today in Portland. Back in jeans and a sweater for a Costco run and maybe a stop at TJMaxx for a new swimsuit, although I think the choices might be few by now. I just need something to wear for laps in the pool. SOTD is Ashoka. I finished off a decant but still have the little bottle from the discovery set I split two years ago.

I’ve been reading about Ashoka. Another glory for me to try at Fumerie., I hope. I’m so looking forward to meeting you and Miss Kitty.

We’re currently back at the hotel, because the dear man dropped an entire cup of coffee on me (I have no idea how he managed it, but he was extremely efficient in going Ng maximum coverage) and we decided that doing a load of laundry had moved from “quite a good idea sometime soon” to “urgent: act now”. Even relaxing stretched out on the bed is kinda nice–it reminds me that this is a HOLIDAY and we’re in charge of it.

Courtesy of the very generous CobraRose, I am sampling a few FM fragrances today…

La Perfume de Therese, Angéliques Sous La Pluie, En Passant and Iris Poudre…I think I may have sniffed LPdT a lifetime ago (or so ;) ) . FM stuff, to my knowledge at least, was never sniffable in sunny San Diego. No Barneys. No niche perfume store. I do have a couple of mini-sprays of more recent stuff like Eau de Magnolia and PoaL but the older ones from this line have eluded me somewhat.

All are well done and Iris Poudre is the winner of this particular bunch and I may seek out more of this beauty.

Also thanks for all the interview well wishes yesterday.

The interview was with what would be my manager, my manager’s boss (a VP) and another director for the program. I believe it went well and seemed to be mostly a personality fit type interview.

Interviewing is so tough because you don’t really know they backstory of the group/office, the politics, the drama ;) etc. So you try to answer and respond in appropriate and professional ways based on the information and data provided. A bit like first dates I suppose too but more intimidating because of the uneven team numbers and lack of alcohol.

And I am always trying to figure things out/extrapolate data from the limited data they choose to present. I also try to figure out the dynamics of the people I get to observe but sadly won’t know if my observations are correct unless they offer me the position. ;) It is kind of exhausting. Mentally, emotionally and certainly for one’s ego. Also like dating.

I can certainly understand the fatigue! This is one of the things I struggle with too, bouncing around shift to shift, and always working with “strangers.” Trying to find your place in the flow can be exhausting. So happy your interview went well, and hoping things turn out just the way you want them too! ????

It’s Friday morning and the stars are shining brightly ( sunrise at 8.15 am). I wish I had Calyx for my fruity scent. This was one of my office scents twenty five years ago and I still think of it as a bright yellow burst of passion fruit, unusual in that it married the hedonistic with the preppy. Haven’t tried any reformulations. I’m really curious about Ari’s passionfruit perfume.
Still sniffing cigarette smoke – hope it’s not permanent, but the last gasp of the flu. My grandfather was a chain smoker, nicotine stained finger tips, a damp house that had a damp newspaper – cat pee – ashtray smell. The most eccentric person I ever knew.

    SOTD is Salamanca, Olympic Orchids!
I fell in love w/ the name from a famous childrens book and bought a small spray decant which is so dark & mysterious looking! It is my first trial and Wow! It is powerful- it reminds me of Tomato Leather by cognoscenti- a ripe juicy leather! Quite fun to weat & amazing sillage. I am having fun- with only 2 spritzes!! I smell like a warm bail of hay!! I miss my mare.

    Very late to the party!

    SOTD = Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir

One of my favorite Guerlains (hmmm, I seem to like a lot of Guerlains!). Citrus is fruit and this one has it in spades: tangerine! Lemon! Grapefruit! It is heavy on the tea and also what smells like tobacco (which Fragrantica identified as smoke). Easy to wear, office friendly, versatile – exactly the same qualities I attributed to Mon Precieux Nectar yesterday.
