Wednesday scent of the day 6/7

Posted by Robin on 7 June 2017 319 Comments

pineapple ukulele

It's Hump Day and Chocolate Ice Cream Day, plus, happy birthday to Tom Jones! What fragrance are you wearing?

It's pineapple for me today, with good old L'Artisan Parfumeur Ananas Fizz.

Reminder: 6/9 will be Fruity Friday! (A repeat from 2014.) Wear something fruity. Doesn't have to be a fruity floral, just something with plenty of fruit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the pineapple ukulele ("Charm beach-goers with this pineapple-patterned ukulele that provides a sweet accompaniment for your favorite campfire tunes.") by Sunnylife is $30 at Nordstrom. (The matching candle is today's lemming.)

SOTD- Escada Limited Edition 1997 Que Viva
    Top notes- passionfruit, pineapple
Mid notes- floral notes, apple, pear
    Base notes- woods, musk

Testing Demeter Golden Delicious for the apple note- sweet and light and nice
The Demeters really are a lot of fun

I’m wearing ‘Noir de Noir’ by Tom Ford. It’s a sample and I’m still undecided if I should get a full bottle but it sure is lovely.

Feeling Nostalgic in Cristalle EDT (thank you to a generous NSTer)

Made an order on Culture Cup, trying a new MF and also got a small bag of their coffee. I wrote to them about my specific concerns regarding coffee and they came back with some recommendations so I will give it a whirl.

Here comes the sun little darling…great weather!

I will stay out of it — I really like a few Mariage Freres teas but I dislike probably 70% of their flavored teas that I have tried. Most of them are too sweet for me. So it’s all individual taste :-)

And if I’m ordering non-flavored teas, I can’t see any reason to buy from MF while living in the US, it’s just an extra layer of “travel” for the tea.

lovestosmellgood, if you’re a fan of flavored teas, David’s Tea specializes in them. It’s a Canadian company, but they have an online US shop. I’ve tried a lot of them – if you email me, I might be able to help you out.

I go back and forth on Datura Noir. Sometimes it smells quite lush and beautiful, and other times it seems to teeter on the edge of over-ripeness. My favorite Lutens is Douce Amere, which is quite light relative to most of the line.

Wearing Shalimar (vintage found at estate sale still sealed). I am facing a classroom of parents this morning. Each student recites a poem from memory this morning. We have been learning them all year. In this day and age most children are always on camera etc. so they do not seemed fazed by it but I hate being in front of adults. I do not think perfume gives you courage for that, but the older formula may be strong enough to keep them at an arms length.

Encre Noire Sport by Lalique – bringing the summer scents to the front. I do like the original much better though. This one has an aquatic note and although it doesn’t mind me here, I am not a fan of aquatic perfumes.

Have you tried the Eau de Missions? It crazy cheap and a pretty good dupe for SDV. I have a bottle at home, which I purposely didn’t pack because of the distinct ETOH vibe. Not really appropriate for work (at least for my work).

Yup, it’s discontinued, and has been for most of a year at least? I went by a Marionnaud in France that has a big Couvent des Minimes display last November or so and they told me it had been discontinued for a while. Luckily, a kind NSTer gave me a generous decant, so I’m good on my boozy baking vanilla scents for a while.

I looked up Chaco’s after your discussion. They are cute and I might have ordered some myself, except I had just ordered a pair of Birk’s with the soft footbed. They’re dusky lavender suede and I never want to take them off!

I’ve been looking at the suede strap ones for my H.

Have you guys tried Mephistos? I have 2 pair of Helens. Similar concept to Birkenstocks, but for my feet, even more comfortable. They have a massive arch support but I don’t really feel it under my foot, which is not always the case with supportive shoes.

          • Elisa P says:
            7 June 2017 at 1:54 pm

I’ve tried on Mephisto’s many times and she hey are very comfortable but never bought any. They’re a little too pricey for me.

There’s nothing like a new pair of Birks! They’re just so comfortable on the feet. They come in such a variety of cute colors and styles compared to when I first started buying them 25 years ago.

I am wearing Ichnusa, Profumum Roma (from a sample)
It has fig. Its lovely, but I already have Philosykos, dont know if i need another fig.
Ichnusa is a contemplative and very green, almost herbal, fig. Philosykos is sunnier and more carefree imo.
If that makes any sense at all. Haha

And I swear, I could still smell Dilettante this morning (I applied it yesterday evening around 9 PM, royally, 4 sprays of orange goodness!)

Sitting at my desk at work enjoying some strawberry rhubarb yogurt. Yum!
My SOTD is Insolence by Guerlain. I guess this one is considered a fruity-floral. This was a “blind buy” that I purchased a few months ago. Its a nice fragrance, but not so much my style. But, I don’t mind wearing it. Have a great day everyone!

It does seem odd to me too, but coffee and chocolate are similar in my mind and chocolate-orange is a great combo. I worked with a West Indian woman who used to order black coffee with lemon when I would make a run to the deli. That always sounded awful to me.

In Caligna after Elisa and Nancyleandros yesterday! I would not be sold on this except that every now and then I get a waft of what smells very much like a really good, juicy perfect nectarine (the kind that, in my biased opinion, you can only get in New Jersey.) It’s so vivid that I may need to find a bottle of this…

I love nectarines. Was passing right by the produce section last time I did a quick stop at the grocery store for milk (two teenage boys in the house, four gallons a week, yikes) — until I got a whiff of ripe nectarine and HAD to stop and get some. The three we haven’t eaten yet are making the kitchen smell delicious right now.

I love them too. My theory: a perfect peach is unbeatable, but the average nectarine is better than the average peach.

Good morning, everyone. Today we’re heading off to Columbia Gorge. I’m excited by this part of the trip–we’ll, I’ve been excited by all of it, actually. We had a wonderful time at Walmart ( I have that right, now) arguing over the replacement Thermos, so we will set off today secure in the knowledge that we can supply ourselves with very hot tea along the way. I’m wearing Dzing, from a sample lovely Gaynor sent me. I like it a lot: it seems to fit my holiday mood. I smell happy.

Speaking of holidays, I’m loving this one. The drive to here was really interesting, though we’re puzzled as to where all the farm animals are. I saw some goats in a small paddock, but no sheep or cows at all, though some signs told us we were in dairy country. But actually, I couldn’t see what the animals would’ve eaten: there didn’t seem to be a lot of grass. It’s all fascinating. Everyone is very charming and helpful, though I’m getting a little tired of explaining that no, I’m not English, and failing that, not Australian either. I hope I don’t sound rude, but honestly, there are more countries in the South Pacific than just our large neighbour.

Mals, if you should see this, I have found a post office nearby and will send the Wit today before we leave here. I don’t know if I need to send you other information such as a tracking number. I will learn as I go.

    Be well, all.

No, not Walmarts, but there is a chain of shops called The Warehouse. It probably isn’t as comprehensive as Walmart, though. Actually, I shouldn’t say anything, because in truth, I haven’t been to a Warehouse for years. It might be very similar now.

Just a quick note to say that most of the farm animals are found in the Willamette Valley (and that’s pronounced will-AM-ette, not WILL-am-ETTE), which the I-5 freeway runs through the middle of south of Salem. Alternatively, there should be lots of sheep in fields along the highway to the coast (either Highway 26 or Highway 18), and maybe a few cows and horses.

      Happy trails!

In the spirit of fruit, I’ve branched out from my strict vanilla diet and am wearing Rubj EDP and some coconut oil (because my skin and nails have been sooo dry).

Speaking of coconut (or not), I tried the 2017 Bronze Goddess EDP the other day and was surprised by how dissimilar the EDP is to the skinscent. The EDP is very gingery, and despite my usual aversion to ginger in perfume, I thought this was kind of charming.

I tried that a week or so ago, thinking it was the 2017 iteration of the Eau Fraiche. At first I got a nice tame chewey white floral with coconut that I actually liked! Gad Zooks! What magic is this?! But then it just got bigger and bigger and totally turned me off. To me it smelled like a cheaper version of Guerlain Terracotta. My nose must be completely wonky. ????

I’m sampling Fruitchouli Flash for the first time today. I ordered several Tauer samples. I forgot about them until today. For some reason, all last night when thinking about what fruity fragrance to wear today, all I could think about was fig. And I don’t even like most fig! However, the same box that held my sample of Philosykos also held my Tauer samples and the first one I saw was Fruitchouli Flash. Aha! And I actually really like it. The fruit seems to be the most prominent right now, so it will be interesting to see what the drydown will be like.

    Fruit cocktail, no added sugar.

I kept wondering why this smelled “of its time “, then it came to me. Unlike recent perfumes, the only sweetness (not much) comes from the floral notes. Very nice.

Some days there’s just not enough coffee in the world…today is one of those days. I do, however, smell pretty dang good if I do say so myself. In Tocca’s Colette with a spray (or 2 or 3) of Escentric 01 over it. I love the bright opening of both plus the woody dry down. The only fruit is citrus I believe- lemon, mandarin, lime peel- but so nice.

As it turns out I do not have a lot of fruity perfume I don’t think. Maybe need to branch out! The ones I do have are mainly citrus.

Feeling much better and back to work today. Glad that bug was short-lived! To celebrate, I’m wearing Ormonde Jayne Frangipani. The sqeeze of mouth-puckering lime in the top notes is quite the pick-me-up. Such a pretty fragrance and it doesn’t overwhelm me like some white florals can. (I dabbed from my decant so that helps).

Banjos are round. Ukeles are usually shaped like mini guitars (or watermelons ????) except with 4 strings instead of 5. They do make banjo-leles which are ukes with a banjo sound-great for old-timey tunes.

    1) Was going to go to a cheap movie night last night, but I am doing a no food takeout month*, so by the time i was done making dinner, I would have been seeing the movie at 900 PM, too late for a person who starts work at 645 AM. So stayed in and read the rest of Children of Dune instead.

    2) SOTD: Le Jardin du Monsieur Li. I really like this when it is warm. Winter subdues it, but in the late spring/early summer this is a lovely skin scent that radiates with a bit of heat.

    3) PSA: Zulilly has some really awesome deals going on right on scents if you are needing anything. Mostly department store faves like Guerlain, Sisley andThierry Mugler.

*I spent some bs cash on drinks +apps alone! Amazing!

I had a craving for a Swiss Cheese, German Bologna, and Sourdough sandwich, a few days. Now, even though I have enough for many sandwiches, it was still 22 bucks !
      At the supermarket!
      LOL. ;)
      RIP PRINCE.
      Thanks for the reminder.
      Housequake!
      Shut up already! Damn!

Ha! It is odd how food prices can seem! And single dishes seems to cost quite a bit make, making the takeout seem more doable! But as was said in my household management course, this is false economy.

And i will be singing along to Prince in the lab office. The machines and circuit boards are appreciative company!

I REALLY need someone to talk me out of the two things in my Zulily cart- one is Shalimar EDT (I already have the edp and the edc, do I really need the edt too lol?) and also Mitsouko which I’ve only sniffed once but liked it.

That is terrible. I hate dishonesty. I just witnessed an incident on my way home. The conductor came through the train car after the Newark Airport stop. A couple with luggage looked very sad and said they missed their stop. The conductor did not make them pay or cough up a ticket and said they have to get to the next stop and go to the other side to pick up the train going towards NY. Oh, how much longer is it to get to the next stop and when is the next train; the conductor mumbled something. We got to the next stop and I got off, as did the couple. When we got down from the track, instead of going back up to the inbound track, they proceeded towards the parking area and I overheard them saying their car should be there and thank God they will be home shortly. Grrrrr!

SOTD is Lalique “Fruits du Mouvement”.

    Top: black pepper, mandarin and ginger;
    Mid: fruity notes, jasmine and plum;
    Base: cashmeran, amber and sandalwood.

The amber reads as vanilla, so this one will please those who like that sort of thing, of whom I am not one. :^)

I’m doing a comparison of sorts today. I have Robert Piguet Visa on one side and Gucci Rush on the other. The last time I wore Visa, I thought the drydown kind of reminded me of Rush, so I decided to wear both to see how similar they actually are. So Visa starts out considerably sweeter than Rush, but after a couple of hours they do seem to be converging a bit, though the Visa is still slightly sweeter.

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar

Frooty woody floral with musky Guerlainade. Frooty. because it is not fruity from a fruit that I can discern but likely from a combination of orange blossom, almonds and tangerine. That combo smells like peach to me. Fragrantica does not list tangerine but Monsieur Guerlain does. This is versatile, easy to wear and office-friendly.

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris EdT, day 4

My ardor for this iris remains strong, but scent of the morning might be more accurate. I may switch to another scent later in the day. A mention of Un Jardin sur le Nil on yesterday’s sotd has my nose twitching.

Wednesdays are tough, so I think of Wednesday Adams and try to be bold like her, as when she leveled a crossbow at Pugsley and said, “Don’t be a baby. I know what I’m doing.”

Waft on, fragrant friends, and watch out for Wednesday.

Is Philosykos more elegant?? I like Philosykos better, but thought it was the other way around, that Philosykos was “blunter” and PF was more elegant.

Difficult to discuss what elegance is, but to me Premier Figuier is rougher than Philosykos in the sense that is more about the fig leaf (which also happens to be rough to touch) and the tree (woody), while Philosykos is more about the sap, milky. Figuier is also, to my nose, denser and possibly sweeter. All that said, I perceive them as two closely related, great fragrances (have a big square bottle of Philosykos and only 15ml of Figuier). Can we even say that Honore des Pres Coco is a distant cousin?

You started it all, with your mention of Jasmine Summer – it reminded me to go collect my Soivohle minis, and I discovered that a few of them are indeed fruity!

It’s the 30th anniversary of New Zealand going nuclear free today so I’m feeling a bit nostalgic as I can remember all the protest marches, going out into the sea in my kayak to ‘stop’ the US warships, and the joy we felt in standing up to the US , and in asserting our support to Pacific nations ( especially those dealing with French nuclear tests). So, a cool anniversary. Not wearing a perfume just yet. Since becoming sick I have had a constant smell of cigarette smoke in my head. It’s so real I keep looking up to figure out where it’s coming from but I guess it’s related to having the flu ….unless my dead grandfather has moved in with his Capstan non filters.

I find it to be delightful. Light and musky, with a bit of a classic feel. Honestly, I don’t get much citrus even though I know it is supposed to represent “the suburbs of Zurich, where Andy Tauer makes his home, it mingles with the springtime bloom of the lemon trees to create a vibrant yet soothing atmosphere that cools the lungs and invigorates the spirit.” I get much more of a light floral muskiness especially with the ambergris and not much lemon or orange. I do get bergamot on the opening.

Robin, I hope you will forgive my use of the blog for personal admin. It’s Just this once, I promise.

Mals86, this is for you. For reasons that escape me, I can’t find an email address for you in either of my accounts .

I posted the Wit to you from Richland. It will arrive Saturday(ish). The tracking number is 840-5990-0364-003-0009-60281–01. I wrote you a pretty card from Aotearoa. The picture is a daft, fat kereru eating taraire berries, and I’ve just very usefully found the card in my bag, so sorry, but the Wit is arriving without a word from (witless) me. I do hope you like it: I really don’t. Well, not on me, anyway.

Well, I started out the day in Arielle Shoshana, and it made me giggle when I applied it. Wow, passion fruit, grapefruit and orange, so I’m definitely participating in the weekly project!

Then, a dab each of SL Daim Blonde and Gris Clair in the elbow crooks. Like DB much better than GC.

The big news…the vintage Shalimar from the freebiemeet arrived, and it is so lovely. Many thanks to flopper for her generosity. This made me weep, it was just so pretty. I never understood how anyone could cry over a perfume, but now, I get it.

Laughing and weeping over perfume, all in one day…I think that makes it a good day! ❤️

I hope everyone has a wonderful evening.

Today’s SOTD is L’ Artisan’s Mure et Musc layered over the body oil. MeM and Patchouli Patch are my two all-time favorites from L’ Artisan, Ananas Fizz is a very close runner-up.

As today is national chocolate ice cream day, I’ll need to get some Rocky Road and pronto!
