Tuesday scent of the day 6/6

Posted by Robin on 6 June 2017 376 Comments

London teapot

It's Tuesday, and it's Paul Giamatti's birthday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing fruit roll ups in Bvlgari Omnia Paraiba. And yes, I'm smelling awfully cheerful! Tea at the moment is a Satispur Estate Assam.

Reminder: 6/9 will be Fruity Friday! (A repeat from 2014.) Wear something fruity. Doesn't have to be a fruity floral, just something with plenty of fruit.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the London Skyline Teapot by Cecily Vessey ("It makes a stunning centre piece for any tea time gathering. The teapot has Cecily's signature London Skyline wrapped all the way round which includes many of the city's iconic buildings.") holds 900 ml, and runs £35.

Happy Birthday Paul, loved Sideways and his small part in Dowton Abby.

Allure today, inspired by someone yesterday.

I am running out of black tea, and I am also completely out of coffee. (Bear, can you pass me a cup?) Has anyone ordered anything from Cultured Cup? I see they stock MF tea

    Rouge Bunny Rouge Vespers
A nice combination of lily-of-the-valley and apple. Apple note often smell synthetic to me, but here it works quite well. It makes lily-of-the valley softer and lighter. Longevity and projection are poor, but maybe it’s because my sample is in a dab vial. I think this one may work better when sprayed.

SOTD- Escada Limited Edition 1996 Jardin de Soleil
Top notes- sweet raspberry, peach, neroli, gardenia, tuberose
Mid notes- orange blossom, marine notes, saffron, hyacinth
    Base notes- oakmoss, sandalwood

And testing Scarlet Larkspur which has cherry, red currant and red wine as notes. It is OK but I prefer Angel’s Trumpet from the Ineke Botanical series

I like Scarlet Larkspur but I have to really be in the mood for sweet and fruity so I don’t wear it that often.
Wish I still had some of the old summer-edition Escadas. I still have some of the 1999 Loving Bouquet but have no idea what happened to the others.

Chocolatemarzipan8: I’ve been collecting them too—from a way back! I agree that they started out good but have descended into boring fruity-florals again and again. I think the look of the bottles has improved now that the glass is coloured, instead of just coated.

How many bottles do you have? I have every single year in the 1.7 oz size(1994-2016) except the first one (1993- I only have a mini of that) …this year I was on a no buy but a younger family member bought the 30ml bottle and gave it to me when she finished most of the juice. One day Mr. CM8 is going to buy me a cabinet so that I can display them all!

My favourite was Ibiza Hippie from 2003. It was a fun fruity floral and hey, it was done by Michel Almairac so it can’t be all bad. :-)

Happy Tuesday Everyone! My SOTD is the fruitiest, fruit perfume ever made. I am wearing Byredo’s “Pulp”. I drained the rest of my bottle this morning and was so sad to do so. This is such a great summer / spring fragrance. I was saving the last little bit for a special occasion; but there’s no time like the present. I probably should have saved this for Friday, but oh well. I smell divine (if I must say so myself). Have a great day, everyone! :)

I’m so glad that you are feeling cheerful and Omnia Paraiba is great for that. Even reading the name makes me giggle because of your funny review.
I’m feeling rather solemn in L’énlèvement au sérail by Parfums MDCI. A glorious peachy chypre.
Slept badly and started my day with a very unpleasant phone call about money. Not great for getting me going. On top of that I have to take an exam this evening, which I’m dreading. Ok, end of complaints and onto how utterly gorgeous my SOTD is. Discontinued, but I managed to get my hands on a bottle a couple of years ago. The best of the MDCI’s that I’ve tried, imho.

I hope your exam goes better than expected and the money issue is resolved quickly. Money stress ruins my sleep for sure.

Thanks! It was more about asking for a reasonable wage for quite a specialised job and being answered that it was too much, knowing that the going rate for that particular job is a lot higher than what I asked. I have refused to do it for what they were offering me. A pity, it was a great place during my internship there, but they seem to not wish to pay a fair wage. Thankfully it’s not my main income, so I can go on “investing” in perfume :)

I’ve just had a semi-similar issue in that I was expected to complete several hours of testing prior to a contract even being offered and without pay for said hours. Thankfully, I have other options and gracefully declined their non-offer offer.

As did I. It was interesting because she wasn’t expecting this at all. I’m too old to be doing everything for free. Are you enjoying your current lifestyle?

          • Deva says:
            6 June 2017 at 4:54 pm

This is in response to your question above. Yes, I am enjoying it, although I don’t think it’s as adventurous as people imagine. I have 2 weeks left with my current contract and I’ve got seriously itchy feet. I don’t think too many would care for this lifestyle because the certainty of the next contract is quite fluid and undefined, especially in today’s healthcare climate. I tend to like change and the unknown is exciting to me, but most people prefer routine and security, so I’m a bit of an anomaly. I’m 52, was a very resposible and dependable child and adult for most of my life, but now have decided that I don’t want to waste anymore time, because there is no such thing as “certainty” in life. ✌????

I sold perfume for a bit in the 90’s. We could barely keep Cool Water in stock. I was never able to understand its appeal. Most people said they liked it because it was “fresh and clean” and not perfumie.

When perfume shopping with a friend the other day, we were talking about our differences in perfume taste. She likes fresh, clean scents and I boldly proclaimed, “oh no, I don’t like to smell clean!” before I realized how that came across ha! She died laughing knowing what I meant, but anyone who wasn’t privy to our convo would have thought I was crazy.

But does she actually like fresh, clean scents? Sometimes I wonder if that’s what women say because it’s sort of a catch-phrase these days? When in reality, the scents they like and wear may not actually fall into that category. KWIM? *shrugs* just a theory ;)

I think with Cool Waters is that it was so different when it came out…you know , kind of like Angel….or Giorgio or Poison…the perfumes that were oddball or groundbreaking and everyone wanted to buy them as they smelled different…but then there was overkill on the usage and copycats and then we all became sick of them….I had a boyfriend who wore Cool Waters and I loved smelling it on him.

Of course I will spend summer break far from the sea in North Idaho helping out my parents, all the more reason for thoughts of the beach.

Two thumbs up for Teapot Tuesday and kudos to Robin for finding THE PERFECT teapot for today!!

SOTD is SHL Taklamakan, another that will go on my list of “Unattainable Amours.” I think it SO sad that I’m not rolling in dough, born a princess, or queen of a small but very rich island nation! What was the universe thinking?!

I’m wearing an old pair of rolled up boyfriend jeans, a button down (slightly wrinkled) Madras shirt, and my Chacos, which I could wax on about in the most poetic fashion! I love them! They exceeded my expectations, and really, when was the last time one could really say that about a piece of apparel?

I’m doing a semi-Bear by drinking a cup of double strength coffee! Cheers all✌️

It feels familiar but I’m not sure what it reminds me of…its possible that I sampled it a few years ago. I’m not organized enough to keep a spreadsheet of perfumes I’ve sampled and my thoughts about individual scents. If I were Donatella I’d surely have a full bottle, though.

I’m wearing Un Jardin sur le Nil which I received from a generous NSTer. I would not have guessed that I had many scents with a fruity note, but I went on Fragrantica and made a list and I have more perfumes than days of the week.

And on another matter, I had to take my mom to emergency yesterday because she was experiencing back spasms. It is painful, but not serious. The exciting thing was that the doctor we saw was named Dr. Soivohle. When he introduced himself I said, “Oh, hello – like the perfume company!” He looked at me like I had 2 heads and said, “Uh, no, I’m a doctor.” I resisted the urge to either laugh uncontrollably or launch into a lengthy explanation and we just went on with the matter at hand.

HellO, NST. Yesterday was perfect, PERFECT, and we thought the Sound so beautiful that we rather respgretted all the changes wrought to it by human activity. Sigh. However, it is ever thus…now we!re gearing up to leave Seattle to drive to Kennewick so that we can see Mt Rainier et al on the way. SOTD is Chanel Eau de Cologne, fresh, crisp and enlivening. I’m not wearing a white linen shirt and pinstriped trousers, but I feel I should be to live up to this tightly-structured elegant perfume. Ah well. Even Chanel has to slum some days.

I’m slightly nervous about today’s trip. I always worry when we drive on t’other side of the road after a long gap in doing so. Be well all.

What’s the draw in Kennewick? It’s not Pasco. :-) I kid, Pasco-ites, I kid. I do find it hard to imagine waterdragon is a huge fan of hydroplane racing, but I wouldn’t think Hanford would be interest either, so I’ll go with wineries. ;-) Whatever you’re doing there, waterdragon, I hope you enjoy! I was home (Seattle) a few weeks ago and the weather was gorgeous. If you get to see Mt. Rainier, consider yourself fortunate; it is not always “out” as we say.

Not Kennewick, as it turns out, but rather, Richland, for one night on our way to Columbia Gorge. We wanted to go over Chinook (spelling?)Pass, but were slightly disconcerted to find it closed. Never mind: we found much of beauty and interest in an alternative route. Washington is spectacularly lovely.

A tragic loss in our family: I seem to made a hole in the steel like Ng of our Thermos. I cannot tell you how dreadful it was to go without a cup of tea for hours and hours and hours. That must be the only bit of British heritage I have…we’re off to find a place called Wal’s Mart (I think) to buy a a replacement. I am on a warning not to store the breadknife in the new one!

SOTD is Atelier Cologne Bois Blonds. Fragrantica lists no fruit notes, but there is a definite orangey/lemony/bergamot-ey thing going on in the opening of this fragrance, so I’m counting it as a fruit.

I’m also participating in the project with my tea, which is an apricot-osmanthus black tea to which I’ve added a little bit of raw honey from the bees my parents used to keep. Mmm.

Dame Perfumery’s Monsoon today. It opens with a metallic Iris, but quickly settles down to orris root. I smell the aquatic note which I think must come from the water lily. I would describe this as a soft aquatic orris root that wears close to the skin. But not your typical department store offering! Good for the office, health appointments, etc…

Oh, I also wanted to say to those who were talking about wanting to try by Killian’s Black Phantom that I tried my manufacturer’s sample last night. My first reaction was”no, don’t think so”, but a few minutes later I had completely changed my mind and the dry down was wonderful. I think it would be better in cold weather and I’d like it to smell it on a man, but it was definitely good, and there are only a few by Killian’s that I really appreciate.

Yes, yes but here is the important question:

Is this a perfume that Jack Sparrow would wear???

I always thought that Captain Jack, if you were ever to wrestle him down and give him a proper scrubbing, would like something like a good Orange water or bay rum!

Aveda Vanilla Absolute oil. For some reason, I’ve been gravitating towards vanilla, only vanilla, and the most straightforward possible vanillas recently. This one’s pretty good, too… a little sweet, but not to sweet, and not intrusive. Just what my nose wanted today.

SOTD is “L’Eau de Circé” by Parfumerie Générale.

Notes are rose, jasmine, osmanthus, orchid, ylang-ylang, white peach leaf, tangerine, patchouli, woody notes and amber.

The peach-and-flowers scent is perfectly fine, but not really my thing. Fragrantica reviewers compare this one to Gucci Rush – I can’t comment, but I think there are some Rush fans out there?

PG scents are easy to get as samples. I got one of the ‘origami packs’ featuring Parfumerie Générale, Pierre Guillaume Collection Croisière plus Huitième Art set, and that is €89 for 116ml (58 scents), which at the time seemed a fair price to me for niche perfumes. A lot of his stuff hasn’t worked on my scent-eating skin though, so another time I would try a few out first before investing in the collection.

To non-perfume matters: I am in London as TOMK and I have seen our accountant re company annual accounts. Big Corporation Tax bill looms for 01-July, on top of Quarterly VAT bill for 10-July. We might be on bread-and-dripping sandwiches before the month is out. :^D

TOMK is heading back up to Birmingham now and I am staying overnight with a friend ahead of a conference tomorrow. Wot Larx.

The name L’Eau de Circé is intriguing- but if was really supposed to be after Circe, would she really be peaches & flowers? Or the lovely rich herbs of the Med, combined with oils and resins?

Well, I am totally overthinking this, but I think if I were a sorceress going about my business with obviously deep and dark stuff like oils and resins, I would really only ensnare the thickest of heroes. Whereas a light, cheerful, womanly but innocent and somewhat disinterested facade would put a lot of tired sailors at their ease. (Disclaimer: my personal experience of bewitching women or, sadly, of tired sailors is, umm, not statistically significant).

JM Blackberry and Bay. CM8 mentioned it yesterday and I remembered that I had a sample. When I first sprayed the bay leaf was so prominent I thought, oh no. But it settled down quickly and now a few hours later I keep getting whiffs of something soft and lovely and realize it is me! I love it when that happens!
I’d gladly take a bottle of this if it fell in my lap.

Agreed – both of the Levine fragrances are surprisingly good. I credit the perfumer, Yann Vasnier, with elevating these two celebuscents to a higher-than-normal level. Vasnier did the scents for Divine, a house that flies a bit under the radar, but which makes really beautiful perfumes.

    Happy Tuesday, guys!

    1) Housefront news: In addition to replacing the vertical blinds with draperies and doing some touch up painting, I half tamed the back garden and the front hell strip (just in time for rain) and purchased a new to me couch off craigslist. It’s a lovely cream colored sofa, with down and goose feather cushions around a foam core. Barely 2 years old. It’s quite possibly the most luxurious thing I have in the whole house. I was gonna order a couch, very similar, for $1500 in a different color- but I got this for $450.

    2) SOTD: Prada Infusion Oeillet- perfect for a sumemry late spring day!

Such a deal in that couch! I bet it looks fabulous. Out of curiosity, what’s a “front hell strip?” I initially thought “front hall” but then that doesn’t make sense because you’re talking about outdoors, right? This is me, confused!

A ‘hellstrip’ is that sad ribbon of lawn or ground between the street and sidewalk OR the side yard in a townhouse. It’s usually scraggly and a place that dogs (and their owners) designate as a bathroom!

Here’s a link which explains more and gives tips on how to improve the area:

Ah yes! Mine is to the side, so once I tame it (and looks like I am gonna have to be merciless) I am gonna plant lots of lavender and rosemary- along with summer/fall bloom bulbs. I will allow the bulbs to naturalize, and just mulch like crazy. Back garden will be very wild I am afraid this year- I will plant some trellis plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and such, and put herbs in pots and call it good.

Feel the same about vintage Yvresse, it’s so wonderful, I don’t wear it often, as I don’t have much left, but if it was more readily available/cheaper I’d wear it so much!

Gorgeous photo – and yet another vintage bottle in perfect condition. Where do you shop for your vintage perfumes? I’m lazy and just use ebay, and go for cheap rather than perfect ;)

Oh, and I have a mini Champagne. Y is now the only classic missing from my collection. I’ve always been drawn to the Rive Gauche bottle as it was so different than anything on the shelves when it came out, and still is. It doesn’t really look like a bottle of perfume.

I go to estate sales , this specific bottle was found intact in a cellophane in a garbage (there is this guy who finds stuff in garbage and contacts me when he finds perfume). It was in great condition, smells absolutely perfect, I can’t imagine someone throwing this away.

I know I got a sample of that at some point, and while I don’t actually remember the specifics (I’m sure the sample’s still laying around somewhere), I *do* recall not thinking it smelled at all like passionfruit

I didn’t care for Passiflora at all. I guess it is the scent of the flower and not the fruit. I love passion fruit, so was disappointed as well.

I’m out of sink with community project, and it has been raining heavily all day, and like Jenkr incense seemed to be called for, so I’m wearing Epic Woman.
The sun has finally broken through, and I’ve just planted a small honeysuckle near the patio area, and a clematis vitacella.
The garden really needed that rain, and I’d just finished lots of planting in my cottage garden, lots of astrantias, cornflowers and some Iris too. I’m really happy that my planting coincided with a big rainfall!
Will wear Quel Amour! Tomorrow to start my fruity week.

Outside of citrus and fig notes, I don’t love a lot of fruity perfumes unless they are absolutely Over The Top. Wearing the OTT Bombay Bling this morning for a day of yard work (it never seems to end). When I lived in California during the drought years everything grew so slowly–here in the PNW the grass can grow a half-inch in a day!

    SotD = Infusion d’Iris EdT, day 3

Love that city skyline teapot. As a reformed former teapot collector I look forward to Teapot Tuesday on NST.

It’s time for summer reading, (sorry to jump the gun on the summer reading poll!) but I have to share. I just started reading “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry” by Fredrik Backman. I’m only 15 pages in and am totally in love with this story.

A month ago I watched the movie “A Man Called Ove,” based on the book by the same author, and was absolutely torn to pieces. Had a marvelously cathartic full-on-ugly-cry at the end. Haven’t done that in response to a movie since Forrest Gump.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and remember, perfume is our superpower, beautifying the world one spritz at a time.

I’m in Caligna today, from a sample thanks to Elisa P.! This has a combination of unexpected notes, but it works so well. Clary sage and fig at the opening, and then it blends into soft woods later on.

    SOTD = Hermes Galop d’Hermes

I smell fruity! FWIW, Indon’t smell leather at all amd my 4 spritzes from a 7 mL atomizer are long gone. I may need to double that. Doubling itnwill probably be the equivalent of almost 4 sprays from a FB.

I love Galop as well, and I think the Hermes leathers might be my favorite of their offerings. I *think* I read somewhere recently that the Hermes leather perfumes are based on the leathers used for gloves and handbags. At any rate, that’s what they smell like to me, which is quite different from, for instance, the aroma of a pair of leather boots or jacket. (No birch tar et al.)

And that’s my long, wordy way of saying I get a good dose of leather from Galop, but it’s leather Hermes-style :)

I’ve been dithering too. Clarissa, I think it was, gave me such a generous decant a while back I am still going through it. Blueberries? I am totally intrigued! Must try that one. I like berries. Would never have thought so when I started this perfume adventure, but generally I enjoy the scent of berries in perfume, unless it is very synthetic (ie that fake-o strawberry scent).

HB, Paul! Sideways is one of my absolute favorite movies, funny but a little bit sad at the same time.
SOTD is ELDO – You or Someone Like You. I bought this blind (I know!!! I relapsed after many many years..) ehm.

Can’t blame you for buying that one un-sniffed. How is it?

Good afternoon, I’m testing (and loving) L’heure Bleue and have a question for you knowledgeable folks. There is a prominent note that I can only describe as “used bookstore”. It’s wonderfully intriguing…what is it? And thank you!

I might kind of know this one! The used book smell is apparently the smell of lignin breaking down, which is closely related to vanillin. Maybe that’s it?

Getting pretty close to reeking havoc here. Started the day in No 5 edt, then sprayed a bit of Nicolai Week-End (which smelled like black pepper) and dabbed some Musc Monoi from the same house (I like the monoi but not the other bits – something sharp in there that puts me off it.)

Wanted to smell Sublime Balkiss, but it turns out I have none. So instead I smothered a bit of Tauer Orange Star (fruit points?) which I really disliked the first time I wore it. Disklike it less now but do not love (maybe someday I’ll come around to the Tauerade, but today’s not it.) Then for some reason, I sprayed the insides of both arms with Dame Soliflore Orange Flower. Smells like mock orange (I think?) and is actually quite pretty. Makes a nice summer floral, if that’s what one is looking for.

Wow, there is some seriously florid prose on the new scent announcements for today! I am really liking the teapot of the day, though.

SOTD = inspired by Austenfan’s scent yesterday, I am trying my sample of Tauer’s Le Maroc Pour Elle. Sigh. Another one for the “Love It” list, but it is much closer to skin than I had anticipated. It might be a 4-seasons scent for me… will try it again when summer decides to show up. And CM8 gets an enabler’s pin! I checked up on the Soivohle website last night, and discovered that one of my faves is being discontinued. So I grabbed a 10 mL bottle of Purple Love Smoke while I could.

Really!? Maroc pour Elle projects hugely on me, I’m always afraid I’m going to scare away anyone within a 10-foot perimeter. I might wear it more often if it weren’t so blg. I generally wear 4-5 spritzes. How many did you put on?

I spritzed 1 or 2 times from my sample vial. I’m going to chalk up what happened with me to skin chemistry, though, since I also used that same amount with my other Tauer samples. And they seemed to last longer and project more than Le Maroc pour Elle did.

Although it occurs to me that maybe we also have different formulations. My sample is very recent… how old is your perfume?

Mine is older–2010, maybe. It could be that Mr. Tauer toned it down a bit. If you would like to try mine, send me an email at my username at a oh ell dotty com.

I’m wearing Comme des Garcons Vettiveru, very refreshing. Haven’t worn it since last summer and it’s nice to come back to it.

Wearing Prescriptives Calyx. It’s still as great as I remember it back in the day.

Retro in Ave Luxe Casaque, on me a powdery LOTV with green tinges of I don’t know what – very lovely. Thank you to the loverly NSTer who sent me this sample early on in my time here. I treasure this particular one. :-)
