Thursday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2017 210 Comments

Marni mule

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also, apparently, Eat What You Like Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Marni Rose over a bit of Tauer Rose Delight.

Reminder: 5/12 will be Lessons Learned Friday...wear a fragrance that taught you something you didn't know about yourself, about fragrance, anything! Suggested by Floragal.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Marni Nappa Mule with Strap is $660, at Marni.

    Atelier Bois Blonds today. Of the handful of Ateliers that I’ve tried, this is my fav so far and my first full bottle purchase.
    I enjoyed Angela’s review of Oolong the other day and that’s on my to try list. I love their use of citrus, even in the Vanille, and find them easy to wear.

        Do you like Kelly Caleche? I wear the edp and it seems similar enough to Galop to me that if you like one, you’ll probably like the other.

      I *almost* like that shoe. The color is perfect. But can the shoe really be that long and pointy? Is it for a very long foot? I tried to find a picture of it on an actual foot but failed.

        It’s actually very Medieval or Renaissance. Costume books I’ve seen show shoes with that long and pointy toe, some so long that they actually have to be tied to the leg so the person could walk. They were usually men’s shoes.

          Right, but this is not tied…seems like if it was a long as it looks in the photo, you’d just trip over it.

          I love the look of the shoes but with my big, wide feet I’d look like I was waterskiing with them on. I think they’d look great on a petite foot.

            I had more or less the same thought. I wear a size 10 (most of the time, depending on the shoe), and sometimes things are a lot less cute at that size. 😛

      I love the look of those shoes, but my inner medical self recoils. Not enough space for normal toes, and the wearing of this kind shoes does lead to foot problems if worn too often.

        Unfortunately, i can attest to that!
        Looking back, it wasnt worth squishing my toes for so many years. Now i can’t wear 95% of heels.
        And i love heels 🙁

        On my wonky nose it starts off smelling like cumin to me (don’t know why as it is not a note listed and also not one of my favorite notes) and then segues into spicy roses and vanilla sweetness…lasts forever on my skin and bathrobe and out of all of my birthday goodies this very large decant (20ml) is turning out to be my absolute favorite of all the new things I sampled.

        Soft, spicy… maybe creamy? I’m not good at descriptions, and it has almost completely disappeared on me so I will have to go home and spray it again to see if I can come up with a better one. Wish it would last longer.

    Jardins de Bagatelle today, courtesy of a very generous NSTer. So beautiful this time of year!

    Everyday is Eat What You Like Day for me, so I guess I am participating. I’ve found that denying myself certain foods makes me unhappy and stressed…and I gain weight. I’m much better off in the long run if I eat a balanced diet, including the junk in moderation.

    I didn’t know it was “eat what you like” day. This morning in my way to work, I got a craving for a huge caramel frappe and Big Mac that I haven’t eaten in a long time (trying to eat healthy) and well…….

    Yesterday, I went to the Chanel store in Soho to get a bottle of No.19 Poudre for my sister for mother’s day. The SA told me that she “heard”? that No.19 EdT might be discontinued, but she could not confirm it. My heart sank deeply and my first thought was to buy the biggest bottle for myself. However, I controlled myself very well. After I left the store, I thought if that was a way to pushed me some way into a purchase. I have not heard anything about it and hope the “rumor” is not true. Anyway, at least my sister get her Poudre and I am so, so busy this week that I will not have time to think about it and fall in the temptation to get the EdT for me.

    I had a pair of very pointy, patent leather flats from Sacha London (are they still around somewhere?) in the 80s and I loooved them and thought they were the coolest. I’d like those Marnis if they trimmed an inch off the toe.

      Have you checked out Fluevogs lately? I passed their store window last summer, stopped dead in my tracks, and have been kind of obsessed since then. I haven’t held one in my hand yet but they look to be made of the most beautiful, buttery leather. And have the price tag to match.

      Are you wearing vintage or current edp? I put some of the current edp on the other day and was kind of shocked by how different the opening is (compared to the vintage bottle I usually wear.)

    Tocca Florence this gorgeous spring morning as I gaze at rain drenched roses, daisies, dianthus, salvia and coreopsis.
    The light Gardenia scent floating on this humid breeze is perfect accompaniment.
    So surprised that I like a Tocca this much. I bought a mini roller sampler box for my tween. This one I kept out because it read so loud to me.
    I expected to hate it on but it’s perfume so you try it on skin, right?
    It’s in my favorite ‘green’ scent family. Its more about Gardenia than fumes usually are and after a bit of an odd opening it gets a little deeper and reminds me of real gardenias. This is my third wearing and I’m surprised at how pretty the scent is. The price point is good too.

      Colette is great to me- and I agree with madtowngirl about it being close to Gypsy Water. I actually call it a “poor girl’s Gypsy Water” ha! It’s the only one I have a full bottle of. Someone on here (I’m sorry, I forget who) was telling me that they really love Brigitte.

        Next month I am gonna try a no added sugar month in addition to my eating regime.

            Sweets are my downfall too (what would you expect from a name like chocolatemarzipan) but I am really trying to cut back, not for weight issues but for health issues…sugar is a real inflammatory and like Ede said, I don’t think sugar loves me either!

          Good for you! I’ve done two Whole 30 challenges in the past year and for the first week I felt dog tired as my brain adjusted to no added sugar. After that I felt great! My biggest permanent takeaway is that I now drink my coffee like a real adult- no added cream and sugar- and I’ve learned to love it!

    SotM = a gentle spritz of L’Heure Bleue edt for an easy start to the day. Very comforting, and it makes a nice base for another iris this afternoon.

    Yay for “eat what you want day!” I make careful eating choices due to annoying food sensitivities, but sometimes ya’ gotta let loose. Today I’ll have TWO squares of dark chocolate after lunch. Go, me! lol

    LOVE the pointy shoes (that color!), though they look painful. Pointy shoes remind me of my grandmother who wore (a) high heels with pointy toes and a sheath dress or (b) a shirtwaist and rolled up blue jeans with navy keds, no socks. When I was a teen my feet were her size (4 1/2 US) so Grandma gave me some of her 1950’s pointy toe pumps. I wore them out. 🙂

      Are your feet still that small? You must either a) have your pick of all the cute sale shoes or b) have a hard time finding women’s shoes.

      As a teen I wore a 9 and though my feet were proportionate to my body (probably 5’8″ at the time) I tripped a lot. Actually, I still do – and feet and height continued to increase past teen years.

        heh heh, my feet stayed small for a while, and it was great for shopping, until I had a surprise growth spurt in my early 20’s! I grew an inch in height, and my feet grew two full sizes. I have average size feet that are rather disproportionate to my height – I’m only 5′ 1″. Oh well. 🙂

    Tried on a new scent for our new apartment–April Aromatics Tempted Muse, from the ever-generous pixel. It reminds me of Amouage Fate–the same heavy, sweet, overbearing powderiness. Hopefully I’ll like the new apartment more than I like today’s scent!

    Everything is a disaster–boxes and boxes, furniture in the wrong place (not the movers’ fault; things just look different than you expect them to from measurements and imagination)–but my goodness, it’s nice to have a bunch of extra space and oodles more sunshine, even on day as cloudy as today!

        Thanks! I’m sorry yours was so stressful 🙁 We are moving from a 1br to a 2br just two miles away, which I think is nearly as low-stress as is possible. Nonetheless, it hasn’t been great, and the unboxing and setting up will be even more annoying :-/

        Tempted Muse has actually lost a lot of its powder by now, and is kind of a sweet, sandalwood-vanilla, white flower business, which is pretty nice!

      Its so cosy and well made, guaranteed to make everyone smile.

      And even though I doubt I need it in my collection, I so admire that attar.

        ..of course there are also warm, incensy and/or spicy iris scents, but sometimes I feel there are too many houses that try to imitate the ‘silver’ or the ‘green and cool’, but that is just based on what I have tried so far, i am probably wrong haha 😉

        (btw I love Bois d’iris from TDC for the woods and spicy vibe)

    Good morning. I’m getting later and later with posting. Between Dakkie’s nocturnal yodelling and the doctor’s magic pill, my sleep patterns are unusual but satisfactory, and it seems I no longer wake at 4.45 every morning. I’m kind of missing my time to think…iron…plan…remember stuff to do…post to NST.

    SOTD is Coromandel, which is perfect for today. The city is locked under thick grey cloud, the sky is pressing in, and the rain is falling in sheets. It’s not super cold, but it looks as though it should be, if you see what I mean. Coromandel is slipping into my outfit like a puff of warm air, insulating me against misery with chocolate, patchouli and spice tempered with something slightly herbaceous and medicinal.

    What did this perfume teach me? To USE my stuff, love it while I have it and let it go when it’s gone. Also, not to be intimidated by “glamour”. Coromandel was the first Exclusif i bought, back on a trip to Melbourne for some birthday a few years ago. I had never gone into a Chanel boutique at that point–I felt too old, too dowdy, too all sorts of things that are too boring to talk about, but of course, to try the Exclusifs, I had to brave the perfect young things inside. In fact, it was a gorgeous, fun experience…they fell on me with joy, muttered flattering things about my skin, flung pretty colours on me, all criticising the others’ taste, loaded me with samples, treated my purchases with reverence, made me laugh and sent me out into the streets again with my little black and white bag feeling uplifted. Of course, I was converted to Chanel too, so it worked for them too.

    Be well, all.

    I wasn’t too keen on the shoe at first, but when I saw it from other angles on the website, I kind of like it better. It’s easier to see here that it has an ankle strap.

    http://www.marni.com/us/sabot_cod11191173bl.html#dept=mccsndss

    Not that I’d spend $660 on a pair of shoes, even if I had that kind of money.

    As for the SOTD, I’m wearing Le Labo Vetiver 46, from a sample. The sample fell off my dresser when I was getting ready this morning, so I kind of just went with it. I’m not sure I had worn it before, but I like it. It kind of reminds me of SL Vetiver Oriental, but a little rougher around the edges (and less expensive than the VO, which is apparently only in bell jars).

    Egads, those shoes look scary! Very pointy toes are so not my thing. The color is gorgeous, though.

    SOTD = a spritz of E & J Nirvana Rose, from the sample stash. This smells like a deeper version of the Rose Jam shower gel I have, IMO. One of these days I ought to wear both of them together, and double-check my sniffer.

      I actually really enjoy Nirvana Rose. I think their stuff is pretty good. I like Black as well.

    Going through old samples and today I am trying Bottega Veneta and Armani Si…both of which are new to me. Not unlike movies, I can’t seem to keep up with new fragrance releases either… 😉

    BV is very rich smelling. I can see why it gets praised here.

    AS is leafy, green rose on me so far…I don’t detect vanilla yet but see it listed as a note.

    I have been going through old perfume and, if you can believe it ;), make-up I have purchased but never worn, and come to the conclusion that I must really, really, love and want something to acquire it going forward.

    I have purchased too many perfumes and make-up items b/c of blog reviews, late-night readings of Basenotes/Fragrantica threads, etc. I have given away quite a bit of stuff away to my sister and niece and I’ve sold some on Ebay. Comparatively I don’t have *that* much stuff but, at some point, buying things and not using them becomes a bit odd and starts to border on hoarding.

    I’m not getting rid of everything…the Chanels, of course, will escape the purge and I will have plenty of lipsticks and blush…(lipstick is a particular weakness…) but boy it feels good to get rid of stuff.

    I saw an article about celebrities being warned about not disclosing relationships for product endorsements on social media and it really made think about all the make-up/perfume I’ve acquired in the last few years and how it’s pretty much directly correlated with time spent reading make-up/beauty blogs… 😉 To be clear, I purchased plenty of make-up and perfume before make-up and beauty blogs were around but, going through all my product, has made me think.

    I love make-up and perfume and consider both hobbies/interests but I am going to endeavor lighten the beauty load I buy and leave some for everyone else to enjoy. 🙂

      Great post, and I’m completely with you on downsizing the make-up load. But old habits die hard. I was in Ulta the other day and bought a new foundation I did NOT need. It’s going back Saturday. I’m also suffering from a bit of Sephora withdrawal. No store where I’m at currently and I’m surprised how much I miss testing/browsing in store.

        Thanks, old habits really do. I can remember the rush I felt when I bought a Chanel eyeshadow quad in high school…I still get that rush when I handle make-up. 😉

    Oh, man, work has exploded and I’m going to be too busy for the next week or three.

    SOTD is Tauer “Lonestar Memories”.

    Top: geranium, carrot seed and clary sage;
    Mid: leather, cistus and jasmine;
    Base: myrrh, sandalwood, vetiver and tonka.

    A great smokey-flowery perfume.

    Yesterday I organised a team meal for my client’s CEO and the team here in Duesseldorf. We enjoyed great food and wine in a building that started life in the 1500s as the chapel and hospital of a monastery. I got home far to late (and possibly a bit too squiffy) to post here. SOTDY was D. S. & Durga’s “Pale grey mountain, small black lake”.

    Top: oakmoss and water notes;
    Mid: heather, water pepper, violet, blackberry and beech;
    Base: water notes and pigweed.

    Maybe I’m suggestible, but this really does remind me of the West of Ireland where I grew up.

    Lessons learned from these perfumes:
    D S & Durga – sometimes it really pays off to try a perfume because you’re intrigued by the name or the concept. So long as you sample first, what’s the worst that could happen.?
    Tauer – a ‘lesson to learn’ rather than ‘lesson learned’: I love Lonestar Memories and am trying to stick to getting a decant rather than springing for a FB. If I got FBs of everything on my wish list, not only would I be a lot poorer, but I really think I’d feel slightly sick at my own extravagance.

      See, i would just blind buy that D S Durga based on the name alone, ” Pale grey mountain, small black lake.” And I would double blind buy because of the heather note and the intriguing pigweed. And having oakmoss at the top…with water….that’s cool.

      Nah, buy the full bottle(s) and contribute to keeping Andy Tauer and David Seth Moltz in business, rather than simply contributing to the income of the decanters.

    I had an awful perfume accident this morning, I was going to take a pic of Bois d’Armenie for Instagram and I left the perfume on top of my Hermes scarf all night, this morning I wake up with a very strong smell in the house ,I realized that the half of the bottle leaked on the scarf. If you want to see the pic you can see it on my Instagram

    I am not wearing any scent today.

    My feet hurt just looking at that shoe!

    SOTD = Puredistance White

    Creamy musky floral sandalwood Tonka. It smells peachy to me at times but no peaches were harmed in its making. I love it but it got the ixnay from the mater so will need to wear less of it.

    Lesson Learned – This one was divisive amongst the bloggers. Don’t let negative reviews from some respected bloggers stop you from trying it and judging for yourself.

    Wearing Rahat Loukoum from a sample tonight; you guys inspired me to use up the whole vial at once.

    Today everything went wrong that could have; I’m pretty sure it was carry-over from last night’s full moon. But my bottle of vintage Diorissimo arrived yesterday in the mail so that kind of saved yesterday and today. I’d been eyeing the Dior for awhile but broke down, because I was pretty sure I needed it just for today.

    Hopefully we don’t get the storms and continued flooding over night. Stay fragrant and safe everyone!
