Thursday scent of the day 4/20

Posted by Robin on 20 April 2017 270 Comments

Hikaru Sulu, Star Trek

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Weed Day, and a very happy birthday to George Takei, who turns 80 today — set phasers to stunning! What fragrance are you wearing?

So many Italians, so little time...this morning I wanted to wear Lorenzo Villoresi Dilmun, but no can find. So I'm in the lovely Lorenzo Villoresi Donna instead.

Reminder: on 4/21 we're doing Enchanted April (inspired loosely by the novel and movie of the same name) — wear your favorite Italian fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Update: and meant to say, please don't miss Kanuka on the radio!

Still using Angela’s Perfume on a Budget as an inspiration.

    On left arm Tabac Citron
    On right arm Gallop

If Gallop were at Sephora I would be tempted during their percent off sale this week, but lucky for my wallet its not

SipOTD Hammam green tea from PdT

Good to know…I completely finished my Providence samples and while I adored them I did not get much lasting power (maybe an hour at most).

Gallop has completely faded and Tabac is still hanging on and I sprayed at 7:30 am and it’s now 12:30 my time

On my way to a funeral right now. My aunt’s mother died from Alzheimer’s on Saturday, so I have to go. Spending the morning in De Profundis. When that wears off, I will switch to no 19.

Teenagers from miles around come to “celebrate” in the park across the street from me. In the past year a couple of urban coyotes have taken up residence there; that may lead to some surprising encounters this afternoon.

Wearing one of my few Italian houses today.
Ambre d Or by Il Profvmo – II get a sweet powdery amber, and it has a half life comparable to uranium.

So happy as one of the Galgos in my local group got loose last night, and found his way home after a 12 hour walkabout. Apparently he, and all his escapee siblings are just fine, and pepperoni snacks are being spread with abandon. Kiss your critters from me – they are precious things.

I volunteer in Greyhound and Galgo adoption, and have one of each. My avatar is Ollie, a silly Galgo who came to live with me after he and his sibs were found with their deceased mother in Spain. He is the joy of my life.

I was texting with the Mom of the greyhound and Galgo escapees, and everyone is curled up, sleeping warmly and safely with full bellies.

I found a sample of Eau d’Italie Sienne l’hiver. It is cold and pouring rain here, and this is a good match for that. I don’t think it would ever be on my wishlist though – very acidic and herbal.

I really like it – I think because it was one of the first perfumes I sniffed that wasn’t a “typical” perfume. I don’t think I could ever wear it regularly, however.

It appears the Easter Bunny didn’t remember my bottle of Oliver Peoples. (He was probably too busy!) If your generous offer of a wee decant is still available, please contact me at payne underscore cm at the yahoo.

I could do many weeks of Italian frags. Maybe it’s my Italian heritage but I find I prefer, and relate to, the style of Italian perfumery over French or English or American. I do love Middle Eastern but it’s just so intense and a little limited in its scope. I enjoy the fun, bold passion in Italian scents.

I think you were my enabler for Roma. A little too cold today here for it, but you smell wonderful! I’m still not sure what makes Italian perfumes “Italian”. I guess in my mind they are citrusy and aromatic or something.

I am generalising as I know there are exceptions, like niche, but overall to me French perfumery is more polished, refined and elegant, whereas Italian is more carefree, maybe a bit brasher and more outdoorsy. More outspoken compared to French’s classy manners :)
I never feel like I ought to be manicured and coiffured in Italian fragrances.

I can see that-especially with niche Italian. It seems like some of the mainstream Italian fashion lines are just following what’s on trend these days?

No SOTD yet, but later will be wearing Monserrat. I have exciting news. My husband is feeling recovered enough from his radiation therapy (which ended just 3 weeks ago) that we’re going ahead with the trip to Jordan we had planned for early May. We had already bought plane tickets for May 3rd before we got his diagnosis. After his treatment began, I kissed the idea of actually taking the trip goodbye. It just didn’t seem plausible. Now I’ve been frantic having to book hotels, etc. at what seems like the last minute to me, but it’s been a joy to see him feeling up to travel. And this is a trip we’ve planned for 15 years. Still haven’t had time to consider what scents I’ll bring. I think Incense Rose for Petra will be appropriate.

Sunny, beautiful day, but stuck in my office tediously plugging away at data analysis reports in Excel. Dreadful chore countered by a dab of Bal a Versailles on my left arm and a spritz on the right of Coco Mademoiselle EDT. Bright, gorgeous skank cures all Office Space blues.

SOTD is Mon Guerlain. I was trying to keep up with the Italian week, but a great friend sent this as a gift.

I will get back with the program tomorrow :)

I’m wearing Maria Candida Gentile’s Rrose Selavy today. I had a sample of Ellis Brooklyn Rrose, and after reading the reviews of both on NST, I got a decant of Rrose Selavy. I totally agree with the reviews by the way. Rrose is very pretty, but Rrose Selavy is much more intriguing.

Intriguing is a good way to put it since there are some rough bits in it. I really like it in the heat-particularly wearing it while in the yard, surrounded by greenery. I find it blends well with nature.

I’ve not tried the MCG, but the Ellis one struck me as very english-garden-prim rose, as well as very feminine. (I sprayed some on my H to test the feminine theory, and it smelled girlish on him.) Not at all what the PR/name would imply.

Fell asleep yesterday wearing Moon Bloom. Woke up and still had a white flower craving.

    I grabbed Ophelia, by Heeley
A proper, well behaved white flower bouquet. Safe for office and work meetings imo.
After 6 hours it starts to develop into a boring musk. Not a big problem because when that happens I can hardly smell it anymore. Haha.

And happy birthday to George Takei!
I am not a Trekkie (though I like sci fi, this series does not work for me), but he seems like a fun guy who does good things for good causes.

Hmmm- Moon Bloom as a sleep elixir sounds like a good idea.

George Takei has been one of the more active members of the original Star Trek. His family was in a Japanese internment camp during WWII, and he has used his celebrity to champion causes related to human rights.

Since today is my Friday I’m participating in Enchanted April a day early. Whomever suggested Infusion d’Iris deserves a gold star, as it fits the bill perfectly. Fresh yet tender, springy, and Italian. I have the EdT version which highlights violet and heliotrope notes. Ahhh… so lovely.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Takei! 80, Oh, my… I’m happy he’s reimerged on social media.
Gianfranco Ferre Ferre edp for Italian week. I took this blind in a swap (thanks Laurels!) and it’s FM Iris Poudre with a few tweaks. Which is ironic because I swapped away the remainder of my IP travel spray, lol. I liked IP but the opening and first few hours gave me a bit of a headache-maybe the aldehydes. The drydown hours later was divine!
Ferre smells more like the drydown of IP (it’s also Pierre Bourdon) and it doesn’t induce the headache so it’s a win!

Mr. Takei has become quite the king of social media, as it were- and a welcome living reminder of the importance of civil rights for immigrant minority populations. Please, if you can, see Allegiance- his Broadway musical based on his time in a Japanese Internment Camp in his youth.

Not related to the bday boy, but ‘Hold These Truths’ is a one-man play on the same theme. My husband and I saw it a couple of years ago and it was incredible. It’s had a few runs up & down the west coast (I think it’s fairly new.) If anyone gets the chance to see it, I highly recommend.

Oh, agreed. No point putting up with headaches. I love IP, but then I like aldehydes; the drydown is the best part anyway. Sadly, I did not get anything close to it from the Ferre. (‘sokay, more for you, right?)

I also like aldehydes (I wear no 5 and 22) but it’s something about the combo of the aldehydes + ? in IP. Huh. I think the Ferre is a dead-ringer for IP. I think Luca T called Ferre a perfected IP in The Guide. But, yes, more for me ????

And meant to add from your comment from yesterday: I’ve tried A LOT of those products from Sephora for hyperpigmentation and none of them did anything after 6 months of use.
Best bet is glycolic acid peels (I use 50% from Amazon, which is strong, so only for a few minutes). Another cheap trick which did work somewhat: raw potato juice!!! But you have to use it twice a day/daily.

The weather has turned gloomy and a bit cooler here today (not complaining, we need rain badly), so I’m enjoying DSH Perfume’s stunning Lautrec. It’s a rich labdanum-benzoin-amber-civet-ylang, with faint wafts of caramel, cognac and artemisia. It is definitely not gourmand, but the caramel/cognac give off wafts that resemble immortelle on my skin. It’s retro and yet contemporary, cozy but classy. Highly recommended!

I am intrigued by the thematic/art-inspired work she does, though. Come to think of it, I’d love to test her YSL scents against the Saint Laurent Le Vestiaire set I bought recently.

SOTD Nobile 1942 Patchouli. This is the kind of scent you spray on, acknowledge as a well composed patchouli, and then later wonder who smells so good in the elevator.

    1) Woosh, what a week! Sat down, focused, and did my tax returns. Usually I don’t owe or I have to pay something minor like $500 or so. This year, because of buying the house and actually doing a grown up thing and opening a retirement account, I am getting back $5000?????

    2) Weed and chocolate for everybody! WHHEEEEEE!

    3) No, but for real though, that will probably goes toward decor, savings and a much needed sunny vacation.

    4) In Cannabis Santal. Oldie but goody!

Hi from Paris! I’m certainly a long way from home, New Zealand is quite a distance from anywhere.

I haven’t managed to keep up with reading NST over the last few days, which have been nonetheless very perfume-focused. I’d put together quite a list over the last couple of years of things to buy here, and I’ve been racing from place to place to make sure I get everything while I have the chance. I smell of quite a melange of scents at the moment, but particularly Fêtes Persanes, which is my one unplanned purchase.

I’m here with my sister-in-law, and she’s keeping up with me in the perfume buying :)

Very good morning all, very early. Suddenly I’m sleepless, after days and days of long nights, if you see what I mean. Dakkie and I have done the ironing and tidied a wardrobe, but now I’ve run out of things I can do silently. So, one I’m reduced to planning an outfit to wear today: dark sage green cords and a shirt in green and dark rose with touches of deep gold-y beige, and a deep beige jacket decorated with the most pointless (but fun!) buttons you’ve ever seen. They go around the back of the neck, because….oh well, why not? Anyway, the reason I told you this was to get to my perfume choice. I think Dries van Noten will be a perfect match: soft spices arranged artlessly on soft woods. It’s turned truly chilly here, and I’m choosing perfumes and clothes to help me enjoy being perched on the cusp of winter.

    Be well, all.

SOTD = Profumum Roma Dulcis in Fundo

Yum! I smell like Lemon Poppy Seed Cupcake! Love!

Profumum Roma perfumes are generally very well done and highly concentrated. You can achieve a similar effect in terms of yumminess by layering:
    – Luxe: Indult Tihota + Profumum Acqua Viva
    – Budget: Al-Rehab Choco Musk and Demeter Lemon Meringue

Ligea has lavender in the top rather than citrus. Similar to Coromandel in that I prefer to wear it during the summer when the weather is hot. Strange, I know. ????

MR has orange in the top and then it’s pretty much an ambery, spiced vanilla. I like some of the heavier ones better in the heat, too, but only after like 6pm, lol.

It’s my birthday, too! I am happy to discover (and I’m not sure why I didn’t know this previously) that I share it with George – what a guy. Before today, the only other famous (or infamous, in this case) person that I knew shared my birthday was Hitler, so I’m pretty thrilled to have George switch places with him.

Thinking long and hard about my SOTD. I might go with Bois de Paradis, which is a long time favorite, but I’m also doing a bit of a lean toward La Fille de Berlin, which I got from a generous swapper a few weeks ago.

Wearing Krizia Teatro all Scala and loving it! I’d forgotten that I had a very small stash of samples, not in the lost mountain of samples, but in a drawer of special samples that I really do want to try.

This is wearing much more subtly than an Italian fragrance with ‘Scala’ in its name would suggest. It’s extremely well-blended and it’s very hard to pick out individual notes (after the initial aldehyde and coriander opening).

SOTD and Eau d’Italie #4 is “Un Bateau pour Capri”.

    Top: freesia, peach and peony;
    Mid: jasmine, heliotrope and rose;
Base: woodsy notes, cedar and musk.

Well, I’ve worn much worse. :^)

This is okay. It doesn’t feel special and most of all it feels like “someone else’s perfume”.

Happy Birthday to George Takei! Sulu was one of my favorite characters on ST:TOS. Mr. Takei has gone on to do some amazing work since then.

SOTD = Etro Shaal Nur, from the sample stash. I’m trying to ignore its flirtations with me…

I’m feeling better today; many thanks to the kind folks who commented yesterday. I’ve accepted Tuesday’s news, but it still is going to sting for a little while, I think. One of my favorite uncles, who was also my godfather, passed away from inoperable stomach cancer. From what I understand, he had been experiencing quite a few health issues in recent years. So I’m sad that he’s gone, but relieved that he isn’t hurting anymore.

Note to self and others: I am thankful that 1) I learned early on to keep my perfume boxes and 2) I’ve been willing to pay extra for boxed (used/tester) bottles. Better for storage; so much easier to pack.

Well, I started the day in Infusion d’Iris absolue, then tried Dame Dark Horse. This one is sooo nice. I’m trying not to consider it FB worthy. It’s a solid 4 on the Rappleyea rating system. I have a 10% off coupon from Dame, so I’m sorely tempted to indulge.

Then my Sephora order arrived, so I tried Histoires 1826 on one arm, and ELdO Remarkable People on the other. The ELdO was a blind buy, and isn’t doing much for me. My blind buy average is slowly sinking, so I probably need to quit while I’m sort of ahead!
