Monday scent of the day 4/17

Posted by Robin on 17 April 2017 199 Comments

Etro Paisley Pocket Square

Oh dear, it's Monday again. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm combining last week's project with this week's project: I'm wearing Etro Shaal Nur for Van Morrison covering Who Can I Turn To.*

Reminder: on 4/21 we're doing Enchanted April (inspired loosely by the novel and movie of the same name) — wear your favorite Italian fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Etro Paisley Pocket Square is $135 at Barneys.

SOTD vintage Cristalle EDT. We took the boys to Darwin’s house at Downe, though sadly since it’s Easter Monday hundreds of others had the same idea. Wonderful house and gardens though.

Cristalle edt is amazing, have a small decant at my desk for comfort when work gets stressful. It’s such a beautiful green and zippy scent!

Darwin’s house must be fascinating, are the grounds beautiful too?, I imagine they would be.
I recently purchased an old bottle of Cristalle edt from eBay, I don’t know how old it is, but it’s dark yellow, and very mossy, it’s really wonderful stuff.

My boyfriend also twice smashed the beaker of my Bodum French press, over the course of about a year. After I replaced it the second time, it took me about a week to smash the third beaker. I have since sworn off the detachable glass beaker press and have gotten one of those one-piece Bodums instead.

Oh I really want to try that one, in fact most of the per fumes on Deneses spring list sounded so good, I want to try half a dozen of them, unfortunately most of them don’t seem to be available in the UK.
How does it compare to Eau de Magnolia (I love that one) I recently tried Magnolia Nobile and was completely underwhelmed.

        Hi Mayfly,
I haven’t tried Eau de Magnolia or Magnolia Nobile.
I only tried this one because Denyse had it on her list two times.
I am not even sure if you fell in love if you could still purchase a bottle. I have written to them and they never responded, also even online on the website you can’t.

Let me know when you do, you can compost the grounds (or use them in your garden) and since there is no filter, its a very “green” way to make coffee

When I’ve used coffee grounds in my garden, I’ve ended up with a thin layer of mold on top of the grounds. Has anyone else had this problem?

Alfred Sung Encore, one of those huge late-eighties floral orientals that starts with tuberose and then drowns it in a million other spicy/woody/balsamic things. In a just world this would have been an enduring classic instead of being quickly discontinued (the tides had already changed by the time it was launched in 1990): to be honest it smells very dated, or at least stuck in its time, but it’s still amazing.

Chanel 5 premier today, something nice yet typical. On another note, rainy day recess in April is torture, children are bored with games and on each other’s nerves. CA builders and school planner don’t seem to think we need lunch rooms etc. large enough to house the student body so they eat and play in the classroom on these days. The prettiest perfume in the world cannot cover the smells of lunches from 24 kids and about 8-9 cultures who all bring their children hot, homemade lunches. Nice for the kids to eat but a bit conflicting to smell all in one room.

I’m not really a scarf gal since I seem to be lacking any type of gene that lends itself to fashion flair, but the one pictured above makes me wish I were more genetically gifted and stylish.

SOTD from my limited choices is Amber Flush. This is a nice juxtaposition to the smell of lemon honey cough drops, which I am still imbibing on a (sadly) regular basis. But, I feel better, so that’s the most important part. Secondly, it’s Monday and I am OFF. T-Rex and I are headed to the dog beach to get some fresh air and sunshine. Pretty sure a nap will ensue for both of us when we get back.

Hope everyone has a fabulous Monday! =)

Wearing Selperniku by January Scent Project.
This was sent as a sample when I recently purchased Eiderantler, and I am loving this one too – a milky peach sandalwood with enough herbal notes to keep it interesting.
Highly recommended, especially as they have recently introduced 30 ml sprays.

    L’Attessa on my arms

Enjoying a delicious scone that I picked up yesterday at a bakery not far from where I live…the owner had taken all of her Italian grandmother’s recipes and she makes everything from scratch with only the best ingredients. Her morning sunrise muffins are also to die for. And I am trying SO HARD to be a good girl and not eat so many sweets for health reasons :(

Sweets are my weakness also. Specifically: cookies, ice cream and Whole Foods two bite brownies!
I have discovered a “healthier” cookie recipe that is delicious though: http://fedandfit.com/2013/01/30/paleo-dark-chocolate-chip-walnut-cookies/
They are delicious! Better than regular chocolate chip cookies imo. And gluten free! If almond flour weren’t so expensive I’d be making these all the time.

How do you like the Allure? I sampled it in Sephora the other day on a paper strip and it is nothing like I remembered it to be from when I wore it in the 1990s…do you know if it has been reformulated? I am pretty sure I wore the EDT back then which I remembered to be much stronger and lusher than what I tried in Sephora. Coco is not the same either :( …..and this is why I don’t always like to re-visit my old loves. It is not necessarily that the new stuff is “bad”, it’s just different to my nose.

I’m pretty sure it has been reformulated. I say this because I tried to wear it when it first came out, I would get a severe headache. I revisited it last year, and found I could wear it. I like it.

Off the top of my head I like the Minimalists, Becoming Minimalist, Be More With Less, Cait Flanders….there was another one I just discovered but the name escapes me…once you get on one site there are links to other sites…I should have approached it like cazaubon (slowly) but I went hog wild and gathered things up in one fell swoop and took bags and bags to a local church in a very short time frame. My drawers are equally as bare as my closet. Honestly, I know this is NOT the approach/solution for everyone but it works for me…..I really do like having less and having neat and organized drawers and closets….and getting dressed in the morning is so easy now. and no one at works seems to mind or notice that I seem to be wearing the same outfits over and over again.

Day off today but about to log in to the work network to catch up.

SOTD = L’Heure Bleue EDP and L’Heure Bleue Extract

A kind NSTer sent me both versions and today is my second wearing. I like the Extract better – it’s brighter and has a melange of flowers I could not individually identify other than violets on account of its powderiness. The EDP has a wet cement, band-aid, garlicky thing going on…it could be that my nose is broken.

I do have vintage LHB parfums, one from the 30s and one from the 60s, I think. I will reciprocate for science!

Is the L’HB edp new or vintage? I have a bottle of vintage and actually like it a bit better than the extrait (not that I don’t love the extrait!). I can’t imagine what you’re smelling unless it’s the old, stronger anise/cough drop note gone bad. :-(

The ones I am wearing right now are the new versions. I think I need to wear the EDP by itself and also dab and not spray. I get wet cement / mustiness for a few other perfumes as well, including Miyako Auphorie (and my sample was new) and L’AP Voleur de Roses (from a Barney’s tester). Waiting for the dry down which are similar, in my nose’s opinion.

L’Heure Bleue is such a powder bomb. While I do love it I don’t wear it often. I do have the current version of the EDP (at least 3 years old) and vintage extrait, I love the extrait better. A whole lot less powder that’s in your face.

Both are now in dry down and I want to gnaw off my arms because it now smells like vanilla shortbread and the only thing stopping me, besides not wanting to be a cannibal, is the thread of Violet’s that persist. Lovely and extremely wearable, with preference to the Parfum/Extract!

Only a couple of Italian options for me this week. There are a few Carthusias I wouldn’t mind having small decants of in my collection. They are forever languishing on my STC wishlist (Aria di Capri, Ligea.., Mediterraneo).
Today I went with CdG Zagorsk since it’s a little drizzly and grey. A friend who worked in a men’s fancy clothing store( which closed last weekend) gave me some bottles that were hanging out in a drawer-about a 1/3 bottle of Zagorsk and a fb of Play: Black which I don’t think I like, but the graphic on the bottle is cute so it’s on a shelf for decoration right now.
I think Zagorsk reminds me of Dior Homme?

SOTD is vintage Diorella – a gift of a few ml from a friend (I’m going through all my tiny samples in alphabetical order at the moment). I managed to spill it right up my arms from the silly little bottle. But for Italian, I only seem to have two fragrances that are Italian at all – a few ml of a Xerjoff (not sure which, would have to check) and a very recently bought mini of a vintage Capucci. About 99% of my frags appear to be French, which I hadn’t noticed before.

    Happy (Easter) Monday, youse guys!

My holiday weekend was the best:

    1) Soaked in a Kneipp bath on Friday night, intedning on going to a movie later. NOPE. My muscles felt so loose and warm, and all I could do was crawl into bed (with freshly laundered sheets, mind) Was knocked out by 930 PM!\

    2) Went to the TedXPortland talks on Saturday! What a GLORIOUS day- lots of sunshine, great vibes and really terrific people- I made about 6 new friends! Some of my favorite thinkers and makers in the Portland metro area were there, and I got introduced to some new ones I will be keeping an eye on. Really progressive and interesting ideas to chew on and talk about. Lots of drinks in the park outside Keller Auditorium and throughout the city.

    3) Easter Sunday-also my birthday! Sunny morning followed by a mostly cloudy afternoon. Slept in, watched Mass on TV, did a walk up and around Rocky Butte (tons of flowering trees and trees in new leaf) and read part of Dune. Then went out for a quick glass of Champagne with friends, and watched the new episode of Doctor Who.

    4) Monday! Am in Molinard Jasmin, layered over Rose Jam shower gel. Very, very lovely.

Starting Italian week in Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury (thanks to ElisaP). I sprayed generously since I have the office to myself today. I found out last night that my perfume-sensitive officemate is staying home with a cold. I also brought my sample with me so I can refresh throughout the day.

Well, I have decided to do a week of Eau d’Italie, as I got a bunch of samples 15 months ago and they aren’t getting any younger. And it’s sort-of on theme, depending on how I love them.

SOTD and Eau d’Italie #1 is “Magnolia Romana”. It’s a pretty but retiring scent, floral and green. It dies down quickly to a skin scent, but then hangs around, so I can’t replace with something more robust. Quite Spring-like, and some of you guys would like it a lot. Me, I can take it or leave it. :^)

Best of days to NST. Tuesday, and the last day of our Easter break. Education gets an extra day at Easter: the rest of A-NZ has to go back to work. I’ve decided to roar around doing personal admin things like renewing my driver’s license, fixing up some bank stuff, applying for my gold card (gives free public transport to oldies) now that 65 is just a breath away. Boring, but necessary. I’m elevating the sheer drear of all this with La Pausa. Oh, the dry witty elegance of this perfume. Some days, you just have to be grateful that Chanel does what it does. I have actually read and contemplated the wisdom of Angela’s words this morning, and I agree with everything, but I am still going to buy a bottle of La Pausa for my birthday, despite the flood and associated expenses. Hey ho. I’d better get up and face the day. Be well and beautifully scented, all.

(colonia assoluta. Apparently the effects were only temporary)

Thanks to Mals’ link I learned I have 10 Italian houses represented in my cabinet. Who knew? Today I’m going to wear the easygoing Prada Infusion d’Iris. I had a little medical procedure this morning and now that I’m home I don’t want anything too heavy. Looking forward to napping and taking it easy this afternoon.

I am returning to the grind today from my vacation in sunny Florida. Why do vacation days fly by in a blink while work days seem to last forever? Re-entering with Rahele.

I’m wearing Le Labo Ambrette No. 9. Found a vial of it while pawing through my sample drawer, and it’s perfect for this warm, sunny spring day when I’m at home and not doing much of anything.

SOTD = ELdO’s Far Electrician, from the sample stash. Considering this as a FB purchase… but is there something on my list that I like even more???

Drat!!! I meant “Fat Electrician” not “Far”! Must be a Monday.

Far Electrician cracked me up. There ought to be a scent for that too.

Still enjoying Angelique Noire, which is going strong more than 11 hours after I spritzed myself 2x. For the past week, it has called to me each morning, but it is beautiful, so I don’t mind that it appears to be my Groundhog Day scent at the moment!

SOTD is N°5 L’Eau, following the 31 Rue Cambon I wore for my Easter scent yesterday.

Hmm, I think my options for Italian perfumes on Friday are pretty limited. Must check the ‘ol inventory…

In my Shalimar just because I haven’t worn it in over a week and I start missing it. Surprised my love just for fun with a little something va va voom when he got him from work and Shalimar fits the bill for times like that. ;)

Have a good week, you wonderful smelling folks!
