Happy Playlist Friday! Our community project for today: name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I had it in mind to do something for Van Morrison's joyful Did Ye Get Healed today, and then a very kind Easter Bunny sent me a decant of the lovely L'Artisan Séville à l’Aube. With the backstory and all, that might go just perfectly with something like Sweet Thing or Into The Mystic? But then as soon as I sprayed it on this morning I thought of Suzanne, by the late, great Leonard Cohen. So, Suzanne it is.* We will have do another Playlist project next year or something.
Reminder: on 4/21 we're doing Enchanted April (inspired loosely by the novel and movie of the same name) — wear your favorite Italian fragrance.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
*Videos: Did Ye Get Healed?, Suzanne
No playlist pick for me today, but I’m continuing my floral overdose with Lys 41. Someone almost always comments (in a good way!) when I wear this, so we’ll see what happens today! Happy Friday everyone.
I will comment — you smell great!
That’s a lovely scent.
Mmmmmm. Yes.
I was feeling nostalgic, so Indigo Girls with Closer to Fine and a good spritz of Anais Anais today. Reminds me of getting ready for high school dances with this song on and my friends and i all taking hits from the communal perfume bottle on my friend’said dresser.
I love that song, nice pairing!
Oh, you just sent me straight back to high school too with both the song and the perfume!
That was a “singing with the windows rolled down while my summer mixtape played” song for me. Great choice!
I used to be able to sing all of “Closer to Fine” by heart.
I like that song. Reminds me of road trips!
Omg, I had so many good ideas for today. Is it sad that I’ve been thinking about this project for weeks?
Ultimately it came down to the fact that I had to go with my favorite band of all time: The Smiths. ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ for the beautiful but discontinued Lea by Calypso St.Barth. The perfume that I searched high and low for, for over a year and finally found!
Is it sad I could do this project for weeks, LOL?
But for anyone else who does not know your song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdl84Umy-4A
Robin I am right with you….I could probably do this for a month!
that would be “right THERE with you”
Me three!
Ah, but that is absolutely perfect!!!!
Great song, great reasoning. I’ve never smelled the perfume, but I’m very glad you finally tracked some down!
Oh, I love The Smiths! Their “Louder than Bombs” compilation album is a freaking brilliant!
And congratulations on finding the perfume!
Congratulations on finding lea. You smell great!
The Smiths!!! Love them.
I was also hinking this week of
Morrissey – Everyday is like sunday, with a salty scent like Eau de merveilles or Fleurs de sel.
Nice! Morrissey has the greatest lyrics.
Yes.
What a great song.
Nice! Congrats on your find! I was thinking about picking ‘How Soon Is Now?’…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTg1n95–KE
Pairing this with Tibetan Mountain Temple….
my yoga teacher (whom I have known for almost 10 years) always plays the most inspiring and uplifting music in class…love the melody and harmony to this one but most especially the lyrics. Picked TMT as I wear it often to class and I also gifted a bottle to my yoga teacher after numerous compliments from her.
Last night while my partner was snoring in bed I spent two hours watching youtube clips of the Moody Blues. This has been, by far, my most favorite community project and I hope we will do it again somewhere down the line….not only did it resurrect my interest in exploring much beloved bands from my past but it introduced me to new genres and new artists….because of all you wonderful NSTers with great taste in music I have new roads to explore 🙂 Many many thanks to all of you….
Happy Friday all……make your place your home 🙂
peace, love, light….(as my yoga teacher always says!)
This is such a lovely post. Peace right back at you Cm8:)
thanks, lillyjo!
I love that song! This has been a fun week in perfumeland.
It really has been an enjoyable week, right?
And because I am such an old fart, I did not even know that Phillip Phillips was the 11th American Idol winner and that this was his coronation song-LOL! Just found that out when looking for this youtube!
I’ve learned so much about music and relived so many happy memories during this challenge – it’s really been great. Sorry that you couldn’t sleep well last night!
Peace to everyone.
It has been great!
and actually, sistine, it was a self imposed no sleeping because I could not shut the tv off…..kept listening to one song after another 🙂
I was thinking about Moody Blues also…
Thanks for the link such a great song!
My pleasure 🙂
I can spend hours watching music on YouTube also. I’ve found some really good full concert videos over the years.
The Moody Blues! I have vague memories of my parents listening to Every Good Boy Deserves Favour on vinyl way back in the day when I was a wee one.
Great post!
this is now a new obsession of mine…watching youtube videos!!
You might like my song choice today????
Love it!!!
You smell peaceful. I hope we get to do this project again, too!
🙂
Hey, I’ve been wanting to drop in all week and tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your music picks. Thanks. ???? (Still going to yoga.)
Oh yay to you still going to yoga!!! I hope your body has adjusted and you are feeling less pain 🙂
Cristalle EDT
Boots by Nancy Sinatra
Love it 🙂
Nice combo!
😉 !!!
????
Oh yes! Perfect pairing!
thank you
[Tips cap] Well done.
Perfect!
Awesome!
The two things I love, music and perfume, this week has been so fun! I had to go with my all time favorite band. Ladies and Gentlemen….The Rolling Stones. I’m pairing “She’s so cold” with No. 19. Does it get any better than Chanel and The Stones? No.
Wonderful!
Perfect!
Yowza. Great choice!
nothing better than that/those 🙂
So inspired!
Excellent! I love the review of this one in Perfumes: The A-Z Guide, have you read it? The last line reads ” this extraordinary perfume appeals to any woman who has ever wished to know what it is to be heartless.”
You nailed it!
Ha! That’s awesome!
Love that!
Great!
Fantastic pairing
“And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China.” 🙂
I haven’t decided on a SOTD, but it will probably be Fleuriste by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Jessica reviewed it (https://nstperfume.com/2015/06/25/dawn-spencer-hurwitz-fleuriste-fragrance-review/).
BTW, the quote was for Robin, not for my perfume choice 🙂
And I got it! It’s such a great song, and also — love Fleuriste!
I so love the cover of Suzanne that Nick Cave did. It’s on YouTube, easy to find. Beautifully performed and beautifully filmed. I know everyone will have their favourite version but this is mine. Perfect. 🙂
I just listened to Nick’s version. It’s a good interpretation.
Tam Dao with a little spritz of Escentric 01 (for the peppery lime open) to go with Don Henley’s Boys of Summer- one of my all time favorite songs. Tam Dao reminds me of warm summer days and sunshine and camping.
Nobody on the road,
Nobody on the beach.
I feel it in the air,
The summer’s out of reach.
Empty lake, empty streets,
The sun goes down alone.
I’m driving by your house
Don’t know you’re not home.
But I can see you,
Your brown skin shining in the sun.
You got your hair combed back
And your sunglasses on, baby.
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone.
Oh, my gosh. I never paid much attention to the words of that song. But how lovely.
It’s my favorite song since I was in middle school- so you know, about 25 years or so ha!
That’s a great song, and you smell the incredible.
It actually says “driving by your house, though I know you’re not home”- didn’t notice it was wrong when I copied and pasted! 🙂
OOh, I was wondering which Don Henley you were going to pick!! I am a HUGE fan…saw him twice in concert in the early 1990s….and listened to his albums over and over and over again (back in the day when we had cassette tapes …oh boy I am dating myself-LOL!)
I also loved Sunset Grill, Not Enough Love in the World, Paradise and Heart of the Matter…..
I love Don and have all those in my iTunes! I almost picked Heart of the Matter. It makes me laugh to think of my kitty named Don Henley when I was in college- my roommate and I were constantly saying things like, “No, Don Henley, get off the counter!” We always called him by his full name lol.
I love it.
I second that…especially the part of calling the cat by his full name!
That’s a great song. I love Don Henley’s version from my childhood, and I really like The Ataris’ pop punk cover, as well.
I love that version as well.
Great song and I like your perfume combo!
That is one of my fav sing-along-in-the-car songs (yeah that’s probsbly me bopping in my seat in the next car over LOL).
Aww such a great song!!! And great scent too.
Great song! It’s tied up with college days for me.
All these years later, I still open my sunroof and listen to this while driving up Pacific Coast Highway.
Just as it should be.
So perfect!
I picked one of his songs too!
I noticed! Love it!
My husband and I have lots of songs we consider “ours” and this is one of them from early on. Considering that our wedding anniversary is in a few weeks, I really appreciate your post 🙂
I have a feeling now that this will probably pop into my head later, so thanks for adding to my mental playlist. ????
Being very literal today, plus need to use my evaporating little bottle: 1000 Flowers Narcotic Flowers + I Wanna Be Sedated (actually serve as more of a wake-up tonic, thank goodness).
Were I able to wear any Duchaufour creations, would go with Swamp (Talking Heads).
The other day hajusuuri said she couldn’t think of pairings, and I’ve a suggestion for our intrepid commuter: Living in the City, by wait for it…Hurray for the Riff Raff (great song, btw). She’ll have to come up with a cityish scent she likes to go along with it.
For all the spice freaks, suggest you peruse the oeuvres of Ha Ha Tonka!
that’s an excellent pairing !!!! ( I wanna be sedated is now stuck in my head!) I have a half full bottle of Narcotic Flowers….should seek it out and start using it again!
Love The Ramones!
Yes! Long live the Ramones (in our hearts bc I think several have passed.????)
Alas all of the original guys. But they live in our three chord spirits.
Hear, hear!
This is just great!
Bwa ha ha! Swamp Duchaufour.
Nice pick!
LOL, by the looks of it from the comments this week, a few of us were “challenged”. I finally came up with something but I started with the perfume (Single Malt), then came up with the song (Smooth Operator).
Is the Kilian clutch black or white? I kinda want one of their travel sprays, they’re attractive too…must think of something else!
The one I have is black. The first ones that came out with the single snake were white.
For today I wanted a fragrance to go with Kanye West’s All of the Lights. It must be sparkly (for the title) but also have richness and complexity for the horns and the Minaj and the Rihanna. So I went with Magie Noire. It is definitely my favorite combination of the week and I listened to the whole album on the way to work today and found that actually Magie Noire pairs pretty well with every song on there, especially when the sky fills with herons. Looking forward to reading everyone else’s choices!
I just listened to that song for the first time and was blown away. Thanks for the recommendation!
Excellent!
MBDTF is so rich – that one-two punch of “All of the Lights” and “Monster” (uh, minus Jay-Z’s verse, anyway) alone!! Anyway, great song and great perfume.
Is there a song about honey? I had a craving for something other than the florals I’ve been wearing and went with Prairie Nymph by Smell Bent.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EgB__YratE
Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey. Actually, I’m going upstairs to find something that fits that song, I love it. Any suggestions?
MAC Naked Honey would be perfect, but it probably not in your cupboard!
Oh, Beige it is. Any excuse to wear Beige is a good one. However, I did get a little distracted during my YouTube wanderings, and found Gordon Lightfoot singing Pussywillows Cattails. “Pussywillows, cattails, soft winds and roses… warm breath of spring.” If ever there were a song made for fragrance, it’s that one.
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
Rainbows in the woodland, water to my knees
Shivering, quivering, the warm breath of spring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
Catbirds and cornfields, daydreams together
Riding on the roadside the dust gets in your eyes
Reveling, disheveling, the summer nights can bring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
Slanted rays and colored days, stark blue horizons
Naked limbs and wheat bins, hazy afternoons
Voicing, rejoicing, the wine cups do bring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
Harsh nights and candlelights, woodfires a-blazin’
Soft lips and fingertips resting in my soul
Treasuring, remembering, the promise of spring
Pussywillows, cat-tails, soft winds and roses
OH man, I love Gordon.
Hmmm … it mentions tea, bees, and honey. Thinking about my collection, Jacomo 08 has tea and honey; Golden Cattleya (by Olympic Orchids) features honey and pollen; and Fox by Sweet Anthem has beeswax and black tea.
I don’t own Tea for Two by L`Artisan Parfumeur, but per Fragrantica, it features tea and honey.
A Taste of Honey. You can choose Herb Alpert or The Beatles. I like Prairie Nymph.
Herb Albert! Yes! and you just reminded me that in the 90s I had a fragrance I adored called Listen by Herb Albert.
Interesting!
“Sugar… honey honey” by The Archies. 🙂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwgbfriHWt8
“The Big Rock Candy Mountain”. No explicit honey, but “the buzzing of the bees in the cigarette trees”, and bees imply honey. It would go with anything with a tobacco note too.
The song: Jockey Full of Bourbon by Tom Waits.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vEBPYfy1GM&sns=em
The scent: Dzing!
Tom Waits! What an amazing musician!
Great pairing!
Oh yay for Tom Waits. I thought about doing Blue Skies today, but really I’ve already ended up with a week of mostly sad songs.
Great!
This is such a great theme and I have enjoyed reading everyone’s creative choices this week. On this dreary, rainy Friday I’m wearing Gris Clair, which doesn’t trigger a specific song but is very much like listening to Pink Floyd all day. I’m starting with Dark Side of the Moon.
Total Pink Floyd Freak here. My favorite is Meddle- superb album! Dark Side will be remembered and played a hundred years from now. Classic.
+1 for Meddle 🙂
Did you know that La Curie perfume line is “inspired by Pink Floyd”? Says so right on their website 🙂
Had no idea! I’m off to check it out…!
I do now, thanks! I’ll check it out 🙂
+2 for Meddle. My fave track is Fearless.
Meddle is fantastic 🙂
Ooh, that’s a good pairing, and you smell great!
Pink Floyd! In high school I had a platonic male friend who was obsessed with Pink Floyd and dragged me to the movies in Manhattan to see The Wall….I always think of him when someone mentions Pink Floyd.
Someone was talking about Cabochard and clubs yesterday. I spent way too many weekends in the mid-late 70s in a club in Provincetown, The Back Room, wearing Cabochard and platform shoes. The song that stays with me from that time is Bowie’s Young Americans. When I hear it, it takes me back and makes me happy, every time. Provincetown is a very different place now, on the other hand, which makes me sad. Other songs on the Back Room playlist: Shirley & Company’s Shame Shame Shame; BeeGees Stayin’ Alive; Donna Summer Love to love You Baby.
Love that song, and was also thinking about doing a glam perfume for Mott The Hoople’s version of Bowie’s All The Young Dudes. Cabochard would fit!
Love that! A glam day would be perfect. So many perfumes to fit glam, so many songs.
Mott the Hoople! Oh man, I never thought I would see someone (I didn’t go to high school with) mention them! They were the epitome of cool in 1972. And how we loved T. Rex.
I couldn’t think of any glam perfumes from that year, so I looked some up – how about Patou 1000?
And Halston reminds me of the club scene of the era.
T Rex! Jeepster. Maybe Niki de Saint Phalle?
Yes!
Oh, T Rex, yes! Rive Gauche, of course.
Great Bowie!
Wearing a dab of Joy and listening to the superb Anna Netrebko singing Offenbach’s Barcarolle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdc2zNgJIpY
Stunning. I had not even been thinking of classical vocal, but it certainly pairs well with many “top 100” fragrances.
Oh, perfect! She’s one of my favorites.
Netrebko is an amazing vocalist.
Unplanned sick day today, so I’m trying to loll around in bed but T-Rex is determined to get me moving.
I’m in Vetiver Tonka again which I paired with this:
https://youtu.be/xOhjWw1gswk
Mark Lanegan, one of my favorite contemporary singer/song writers who does a starkly beautiful cover of Chelsea Wolfe’s Flatlands. This fits me right now and I’m already thinking of ways I can pare down stuff I’m hauling in the van.
The continuing mission is: Get. Rid. Of. Stuff.
So sorry you’re sick! You smell great though.
????
Really enjoyed that song, thanks for that. Getting rid of “stuff” is one of my favorite activities haha. I am not one to keep a lot of stuff- well, except perfume. 😉
Glad you liked the song. Yep, I have way too much perfume. But so far, I haven’t been able to part with too many bottles. I feel a purge in the works, though…
Really wish I’d had more time to participate this week, so I’m adding a second pick to make up for lost time.
One of the most beautiful female voices, ever. IMHO.
Sheila Chandra “Ever So Lonely”
https://youtu.be/bbcKO92OGNI
Deva, thank you for sharing that! I agree, stunningly beautiful and now I’m gonna spend some time this weekend listening to more.
wow!!! I forwarded the link to my yoga teacher…another amazing artist …thank you for this, Deva…..and I hope you feel much better soon.
and on the subject of getting rid of stuff…yay to that!!! Ya’ll already know I have become somewhat of a minimalist and have been downsizing and not buying anything new for the past year….I feel pretty great about the whole process…I know it is not for everyone but it works for me 🙂
Yay for Mark Lanegan! I’m also trying to get rid of stuff(not perfume) I just had a dumpster hauled away from my house, and will be donating a lot this weekend. I just feel like a new life chapter needs to be clutter free. I hope you feel better soon.
That dumpster is a great idea! I may arrange that when I get back home. Such a liberating feeling getting rid if baggage ✌????
It really help’s. It’s amazing what you will throw out when all you have to do is throw it out!
I agree wholeheartedly on the feeling of liberation.
I’ll be in Cartier Baiser Vole all weekend, as it’s my only lily perfume and I’m ready for Easter lilies (even if Baiser Vole isn’t quite the good girl Easter church perfume). So I guess the song connection would be any Easter hymn. My personal favorite is Morning Has Broken. Enjoy the weekend and chocolate bunnies!
Oooh twinsies! We must have been posting at the same time LOL.
That song reminds me of my mom b/c she could play it on the piano. Thanks for the memory!
This song reminds me of 7th grade choir. Great pairing!
I’ll be in DK Gold on Easter morning.
Great picks!
Cat Stevens is my favorite version-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0TInLOJuUM
Struggled with this all week but didn’t come up with any pairings that made sense to me. Maybe I’m too literal LOL.
SOTD is Cartier Basier Vole from a sample I’m testing out. Pretty but it doesn’t move me. Meh.
Which version are you in? (EdT, EdP, Extrait, etc)
EDP
I have the EdP and loved it, but Angie thought it was dull compared to the other versions 🙂
Oh interesting. Might have to try out one of the others then.
Thanks Robin 🙂
If I had a sample or bottle of Eau de lierre (Diptyque), I’d wear it in honour of Under the Ivy, that beautiful piano ballad by Kate Bush.
But I do not have that scent.
I was too tired this morning to think of another fav song and then a perfume to go with it.
But I’m wearing Ormonde Woman, and it reminds me of bands like My Brightest Diamond and Goldfrapp. Bands with beautiful frontwomen, who have voices that are both angelic/dreamlike and powerful.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Oh and I could spam you guys for ages with music video 😉 but I’ll just leave it with this fabulous cover of Nina Simone’s Be my Husband, by My Brightest Diamond.
https://youtu.be/7ZZzta8YsLo
Love Goldfrapp. Good choice for Woman! Very artsy.
I saw them play live in Amsterdam in 2010. They were awesome!
I’m jealous! Golfrapp are so awesome.
I’m wearing Tauer’s La Maroc pour Elle, which is one of my favorite fragrances of all time. I’m also wearing this in honor of one of my fav albums of all time Beastie Boys In Sounds from Way Out. Particularly for LMPE #7 Eugene’s Lament. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IITuTnKD8po
Yay for Beastie boys 🙂 I think my fav albums are Check your head and ill communication, though the song that still makes the greatest singalong for me on a summer road trip is Fight for your right
I love all their stuff, but can only think of fragrances with the In Songs….
My kids are always amazed that I like the Beastie Boys. (“That’s a little… rough… for you, Mom.”)
Ha!
Giggles all around. I am way rough around the edges with music and certainly their original album was an anthem for my high school years! It’s so fun.
My kids (born in the 90s) grew up listening to the Beastie Boys (Blink182, Lit, maybe a little RHCP too.) ???????????? What does that say about my parenting, hahaha!
It simply means you’re cool!
I wore that one yesterday, and thought of you, since you introduced me to it…
You smell delightful.
You smelled great yesterday too! It’s definitely has potential to be a signature scent, if I was looking for one LOL!
Excellent! Did you see my post from yesterday? I did the Beasties too!
My husband is always annoyed that I like Guns N Roses. The summer that ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ was so big, the juvenile delinquents who lived next door would blast it on their car stereo every morning when they drove off to school (or wherever. not likely that it was actually school most days.) I know they did it to annoy the neighborhood, but I loved it. It would have really ruined their day to know I was enjoying it.
That song is *especially* good if you’ve had about five beers. Not recommending this.????
Lol!!
Ha!
Such a great song!
That’s a good one. “Rocket Queen” by Guns N Roses is one of their best songs, IMO, but they never play it on the radio.
I hear it every so often on a couple of Sirius XM channels. Not very often, though.
It sounds like my weekend project will be to catch up on the week of posts- I’ve completely missed checking in and I’m looking forward to learning some new music and being reminded of really good songs.
I’m wearing FM Carnal Flower. It’s so beautiful, romantic, and what a tuberose perfume should be. I dredged up Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
https://youtu.be/r9jmusgMgro
You don’t hear it much, but it’s simple and timeless.
You “dredged up” a great song!
Oooooooh. Yes.
So beautiful. Thanks for that.
Nice pairing!
Woke up with an ear-worm: Love is Alive (Gary Wright, 1975).
Sprayed on Ineke’s Angel’s Trumpet this morning, as it was the first vaguely lilyish thing that came to hand.
Peace to all. Let’s go find the good in this Friday!
I remember that one! But not going to think about it too much — do not want another ear worm.
Booked a colorful motel near the beach for Thanksgiving to introduce my boyfriend to my family in Fort Myers and the songs to go with this are 1)Kokomo, 2)An American Dream and 3)The piña Colada song. The perfume is Terracotta Le Parfum. Now I have 7 months to find a swimsuit….
Exciting! We have a local shop, Popina, that does these adorable retro-style suits that are flattering for many body types. . . you might enjoy checking out their website. 🙂
My pairing is Queen’s Killer Queen, with Chanel no 19:
Perfume came naturally from Paris (naturally)
For cars she couldn’t care less
Fastidious and precise…
Paco Rabanne Métal could be Leonard Cohen’s Sisters of Mercy – ‘bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem’
Killer Queen and No 19, wow, perfect!
Frederic Malle Superstitious
Stevie Ray Vaughan Superstition
My work here is done.
HA! Excellent!
Mic drop!
Brilliant!
How do you like Superstitious?
I like aldehydes, and I like many of the notes listed, but somehow it’s not working for me. Too powdery? Too much rose? Dunno. $ saved, anyway.
I wore it outside when it was warm and I got a little sweaty and it was really good that way. Oopsie.
Could be because it is soapy? I am thinking of getting a travel spray.
Well done.
Just tried Superstitious yesterday for the first time. At first I thought it had animalic notes, but I think it was the jasmine.
Brilliant!
YOu win!
I am taking a “day off” today to catch up on grading. I would guess I have about 6 hours of work to do, and it wasn’t getting done at work. Ah well, at least I can do it in my jammies, and the only interuptions are my own wiggly desire to get up and do something else fun, like laundry.
I have sprayed myself with Ninfeo Mio to help me feel like it’s sunny and warm, even if it is illusory on this blustery spring day (although a little sunshine peeks through the popcorn clouds from time to time).
Those days can be oddly relaxing as there are only your own requirements to deal with, and jammie days are grand.
Another Ninfeo Mio fan here.
Agreed! It will be a relief to have my grades updated. I am required to give (and grade in a very specific way) these big lab reports each year. It is always a huge undertaking to get them all done. And if I do it today, kids will have enough time to make corrections before midterms, which would be nice.
Ninfeo Mio makes me happy. It is such a cheery, easy scent!
Mmmm, PJ day! Especially if it is to catch up on much needed paperwork!
I alllllmost picked Tina Turner doing What’s Love Got to Do With It paired with Mitsouko but I just wasn’t in the mood for Mitsy today. So….
SOTD: Roja Dove Unspoken paired with Einaudi playing Divenire (to become). If you love beautiful piano music listen here –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qvglWAHDak
Nice! Love Tina Turner.
SOTD: By Kilian Single Malt
Song Pairing: Smooth Operator
Album: Diamond Life 1984
Artist: Sade (band)
From Wikipedia: “Smooth Operator” is about a fashionable, devious man who lives a jet-set lifestyle. He is popular with women and breaks many hearts. The lyrics “Coast to Coast/LA to Chicago/Western Male/Across the North and South to Key Largo/Love for sale” imply that he uses women to obtain his income.
Just like the title, Single Malt is one smooth boozy perfume, one of the best By Kilian, IMHO. It is the London exclusive but all the exclusives somehow find their way to the boutiques elsewhere. Ah, and Sade is a U.K. band so it matches in “origin” as well!
How did I do? Did I pass? 😉
Yeah baby!!!! 🙂
Impressive! 🙂
*clap clap clap*
You get an A+!
You rock, girl!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE Sade’s voice and your perfume selection is smooth too 🙂
A+ !
Nicely done!
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags go up.
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.
-“The Distance”, by Cake
SOTD: The rubbery tire/vanilla goodness of Bvlgari Black! 🙂 I need to wear this one a LOT more often than I do!
Hey Jada, I think you should totally do a video of you unwrapping a Chanel perfume 🙂 to spoof the video:
http://hellogiggles.com/youtubes-highest-paid-disney/
And YES, Bvlgari Black – you smell wonderful!
Looks like I’d get paid enough to do it……LOL! 🙂
I’m all in!!!
Love that catchy tune. Nice!
;0 !!!
She’s going the distance
She’s going for speeeed
She’s going the distance
Yeah, baby! You smell great. I paired Black with the Beastie Boys ‘Intergalactic’ yesterday.
Long weekend!
MFK Absolute Pour Le Soir and bopping along to The Violent Femmes here.
Song is briefly NSFW…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7y9yChV478
YES to The Violent Femmes, Wisconsin’s very own!????
Yay! This takes me back.
Love the VF’s! This is a GREAT song!
My college roommate freshman year was WAAAAY into the Violent Femmes — which were new to me in my sheltered existence. We weren’t friends after that year, but I kept the Femmes. 🙂
Hooray for the Violent Femmes!
I seem to be stuck in a Le Temps d’une Fete rut (not that I’m complaining) and can only find songs that resonate with that scent rather than the other way round:
My favorite Beatles song, “Here Comes the Sun.”
Crowded House, “Weather With You.”
Doesn’t make any difference which direction you find your pair, right?
A fortnight ago I managed to contact Nicolai Parfums about Le Temps d’une Fete (I fell for it badly when finding and wearing a long lost sample) with help of a kind perfumista. ‘There is some juice left in the factory’ the helpful SA mailed me. There was also some left in a sho, I bought the lot and I received confirmation of shipment today. “I am walking on sunshine” I suppose, although I love “Here Comes the Sun” much better. And as Van steals the show today I add in “Brand New Day”:
When all the dark clouds roll away
And the sun begins to shine
I see my freedom from across the way
And it comes right in on time
Well it shines so bright and it gives so much light
And it comes from the sky above
Make me feel so free make me feel like me
And it lights my life with love
And it seems like (seems like) and it feels like (feels like)
And it seems like (seems like), yes it feels like (feels like)
A brand new day
A brand new day, yeah, yeah
Soon joining you in the rut!
Heh, you sound like me when I want something so limited – “I’ll take whatever you have” (I did this for Chanel No. 19 bath gel at Saks.)
You bought it allllll??
Good for you! Enjoy the rut. I am. 😀
There is still 30 ml left at Nicolai’s, their last bottle…;-) the rest is on its way here. I think my supply will last for a good few years, I am with Hajusuuri here!
Lovely pairing!
Love Weather With you, and the Finn Bros, for that matter. Excellent choice.
Wearing SL Iris Silver Mist, and I have a song fragment running through my head, but I just cannot identify it…so this fragrance will just have to speak for itself, sans accompaniment…
Goo Goo Dolls Iris?
Don’t you hate when you can’t remember the name of song..there was a whole episode of the big bang theory devoted to that
Want something for Belle and Sebastian. Maybe Iris Silver Mist with If Your Feeling Sinister or New Sibet for This is Just a Modern Rock Song . . .
SOTM is MFK Cologne Pour le Matin to go with a favourite song, Breakfast in America.
When I was in 9, our music teacher would play songs on piano from the Supertramp album, and the class would sing along. I remember thinking at the time that it was cool to be singing adult music.
ACK!! Supertramp!! Such an original sound, loved them!
Supertramp!!!! yes!!!! Love them too!!!
“I’m a sinner , I ‘m a winner, do you want my autograph?”
love Long Way Home and It’s Raining Again too
Good Friday!
1) Song of the day: Blue Sky Action – Above and Beyond featuring Alex Vargas. Electronica song, but it’s really wonderful:
I get tired of life,
What a world I’m living in,
Now I’ve got it all,
I’ve had enough, I’m giving in
The sun is shining
Melting the clouds away
Got me some Blue Sky Action!
I’m breathing today
I know I’m burning
This is my final day
I’m gonna to go out smiling
A king for a day!
2) SOTD to go along: Black Jade by Lubin. Fresh, sheer incense/rose, incredibly pretty and grounded for a chilly sunny spring day!
3) And yes, meetings on Good Friday. Ugh, why?
My kids laugh at my love of EDM and BPM! But I refuse to be shamed. And I love Black Jade! Must wear it soon.
Let them laugh! They secretly love it! And I have been to a number of EDM/Trance concerts where there were PLENTY of white haired people getting down, so no worries!
Ha, my kids would beg to differ with you on that! ????
I loooove electronica, EDM, etc. I’ll blast Massive Attack, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, and all my other musical friends forever!
Oh, some excellent bands listed!
Wearing the serene and beautiful Neroli Outrenoir today. Contemplating love and listening to Don Henley’s Taking You Home. Not sure why, but song always makes me tear up. Peace to all you fragrant friends on this Good Friday!
I love that you’re contemplating love. I do that a lot, especially while listening to music.
Oh my….I love that Don Henley song!!!! thank you for reminding me of it!!!!!! It is definitely a tear jerker!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8es85QWT8Mo
for those interested in hearing it 🙂
Thanks for providing a link. I have no clue how to do that. ????
Took me a while to figure that out too….now I am like a cut/paste addict!!!
OMG
This thread makes me feel old…
But in a good way. When I think of growing up in NY and spending every weekend at the Fillmore East and concerts at Madison Square Garden
And actually making it to Woodstock where the crowd was a half a million strong…
visiting electric lady land studios with a guitar playing boyfriend. All of this is the soundtrack to my life.
At my moms funeral last month we requested Beatles music be played.
So I will wrap it all up and spray on Christopher Street where my sister and I spent so many hours.
Perfect!
Beautiful!
Calling all angels, from the splitmeet (waves a hello and thanks)
though I collect and love both, my brain doesn’t process the intersection of music and perfume very well.
Perhaps because songs are even more fleeting than scent?
What I learned from this challenge is that my taste in music is a lot darker/janglier/less digestible than my taste in perfume, so it was hard to make things line up!
Yeah I am not sure how well my two align either. Didn’t have much time to think about the challenge, but when I did it was a little off kilter.
Twins!
I can only get there with jazzy or instrumentals. I am more of a shapes and colors from fragrances person.
Yes, shapes and colours, indeed.
this will match perfectly with your fragrance…another one of my all time favorite songs…the lyrics get me all the time…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaG9SDxwPBg
if we had another week I would have found something to pair with this song:)
Montale’s Rose Elixir. The song that would go with it would be “A Rose is Still A Rose” by Aretha Franklin.
Oh my- that is gorgeous! Both the perfume (glorious!) and Ms. Franklin (glorious!)
🙂
Hi all. Started off my morning with Carnal Flower and James Brown’s cold sweat, and had a great commute. Now of course I’m at work and five steps closer to a nervous breakdown, but I smell good, at least!
Is everyone’s work particulates nervous breakdown inducing in April or is it just us?????But seriously too. This is a real question!
I thought March was bad but April is shaping up to be worse!
Green Light by Lorde on repeat and sniffing Boise Torride for the first time compliments of a most generous NSTer…
Sweet and spicy powder w/ some flowers…discontinued I believe.
Lorde rules.
Wearing California Reverie again today and pairing it with Sheryl Crow’s All I Wanna Do. The song and the scent remind me of driving around L.A. in a convertible – Sunset Blvd through Beverly Hills to the beach.
Twins! In perfume, anyway. I chose a different song.
Fab! Great pairing
Doing another test run of April Aromatics’ Calling All Angels, just so I can have an excuse to listen again to the song of the same name. Written by Jane Siberry, and performed in a duet with k.d. lang.
I was introduced to it on the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ film Until the End of the World. Great soundtrack and movie! It still amazes me how prescient Wenders was in showing a vision of how our society would come to be. A lot of it already has. (From 1991)
Yes, I think I was drawn to the scent subconsciously (sub textually?) from Wenders!
I can understand that!
That song makes me weep like a baby!
Oh, gosh, I find it very comforting. Well, on the bright side, you know what to listen to when you need a good cry! ????
It’s a gorgeous song, but in order for it to be comforting to me I think it would have to be reworked as “Whaddaya Know — All the Angels Showed Up!” 😉
I find it comforting too but it also makes me weepy…maybe in a good way?
SotD = Jour d’Hermes, singing along to “Isn’t She Lovely” by Steve Wonder. Exuberant, buoyant, delightful, and tender. Perhaps this is an off-beat pairing but “when the heart speaks, love listens.”
Have a beautiful Friday, fragrance friends.
I am having so much reading everyones music and perfume pairings.
Love Stevie Wonder..
This has been a fun project. I love music + perfume.
Warms my heart when I listen to Isn’t She Lovely. Somewhere I heard Stevie Wonder wrote it about his baby daughter. It makes me smile to think about the love between parents and children. And his voice is like sunshine.
Lush Rose Jam and vintage YSL Champagne to go with one of the greatest sambas of all time: As rosas não falam, by Cartola. For those of you who speak Spanish, you’ll get the Portuguese:
“Volto ao jardim
Com a certeza que devo chorar
Pois bem sei que não queres voltar
Para mim
Queixo-me às rosas
Que bobagem
As rosas não falam
Simplesmete as rosas exalam
O perfume que roubam de ti…”
Love this…..while I don’t know what the words mean the singing and music is captivating…the Portuguese language is so beautiful….

My sense of smell is still impaired, so I postponed my planned perfume. Instead:
– Started the day in a few drops of Dior “Oud Ispahan”, and thereby proved to myself that wearing a decent sample would be a waste of time;
– switched to Waters+Wild “Cedarwood +Cognac” during the first part of the day. Tried out a new vegan restaurant with TOMK and bought a pair of plum-coloured jeans. :^)
– now home again and in Annick Goutal “Encens Flamboyant” – my mini bottle is almost drained.
Probably my favourite song of all time is Joy Division “Decades”. Never in a million years will there be a perfume to equal it.
True that.
I wasn’t planning to play today, but I’m finally getting around to testing Beloved Woman and finding it surprisingly masculine on me. I don’t know why I expected something super feminine, but I did. Consequently, I’m humming Boy or a Girl https://youtu.be/0Kuk9hnp234and feeling a bit old.
Such a fun project this week! I’ll have to go back and listen to all the songs I don’t know after work.
I’m wearing CdG Ourzazate and the only Arabian theme I could think of was Frank Zappa’s Sheik Yetbouti Tango-and picturing his image on the album cover made me laugh.
https://youtu.be/a2_K-kKSCr4
I popped into the FM Superstitious launch event at FM in the village featuring FM, himself, last night. I think I like Superstitious more after a second testing than I did the first time around-thpugh not enough to want it. Didn’t strike me as that animalic this time-more bitter/soapy, and lasted through this am’s shower! Mr Malle seems nice enough but he was swarmed with people so didn’t chat.
*Yerbouti
Sounds like a fun night..
I have yet to try this one
Oy! Missed you! I was in the back garden from 6:45 to 7:30 because the boutique was very crowded.
I don’t really associate specific perfumes and songs, but I do associate both scents and songs with times/places. One instance where the two happen to overlap is from my time living in the UK: the just-released perfume I bought at first sniff and the songs on heavy rotation on Radio 1 at the time. So, for Playlist Friday, my SOTD is Stella McCartney Stella, and I’m pairing it with a whole playlist.
Imma help you get your weekend started, people! Let’s go!
Hole in the Head -Sugababes
Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand
Let Your Head Go – Victoria Beckham
Hey Ya! – Outkast
Twist – Goldfrapp
Hysteria – Muse
Milkshake- Kelis
Slow – Kylie Minogue
Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet
Sweet Dreams My LA Ex – Rachel Stevens
I Believe in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness
Superstar – Jamelia
It’s My Life – No Doubt
Laura – Scissor Sisters
Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
awesome playlist!!!
Creosote, you party animal!
At first I thought about the songs of my extreme youth and patchouli, possibly upgraded to Borneo 1834 because the Wall Street Journal actually published a story about “Sunshine Superman”. (That makes me feel old.)
Then I decided that it would be a more interesting challenge to go with the tune for the Irish set dance I’m working on, “The Job of Journeywork”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9LgbFfJT5I I picked Y because I’d wear it to a temp office job.
Yes, I am old enough to remember when “Sunshine Superman” came out and still dancing.
I read that article in the WSJ
I am pairing Sympathy for the Devil with Anubis
Good pairing.
I haven’t got round to smelling Anubis yet, but that song seems like a good pairing for most of the Papillon line. Good thinking.
I chose “Twist Barbie” by Shonen Knife, and in honor of their cute but punky vibe, I went with Cuddle Punk by Pinrose. What on earth is that mentholated Chapstick smell when you first put it on…anybody know? It did calm down and I like it fine, but it’s not FBW. (This is a sample.)
Bare up bison, never say die! So great.
Wow, Shonen Knife–probably one of the last choices I would’ve expected today, but an excellent addition!
It’s been ages since I’ve heard anyone mention Shonen Knife. Holy blast from the past!
Ahh the song and perfume pairing is so fun and challenging! I made myself late for work this morning being indecisive about it. I had lots of ideas, but I landed on Aedes Copal Azur paired with Madonna’s Like a Prayer. Madonna up through the mid 90s is a huge guilty pleasure for me. Like a Prayer is one of my favorite songs to song along to, which is quite strange because I’m not religious or spiritual in the least.
https://g.co/kgs/DYQwWR
Backup ideas were:
D.S. & Durga Debaser (yes, I’m Captain Obvious)
Ostara for Al Green-Love and Happiness
D.S. & Durga Sir for gender bending to pair with the entire Ziggy Stardust album
Maison Anonyme Pale Fire for Japandroids-The House that Heaven Built because I wore that perfume to their concert last month
*sing along to
I totally jam out to Like a Prayer in the car especially!
Yeah, I almost copped out with Debaser, lol. It was too early to think.
Speaking of DS&Durga while I was looking through my favorite songs for this challenge I came across this song by David Moltz of the very same, which I loooove and thought I might pair with Bandit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7vRjpEfKys
Huh. I didn’t know he was a musician (but then again I know nothing about him except he makes perfume and is married to “Durga”). Great song. Reminds me a little of Bauhaus.
Guilty pleasure? Nah! Madge still “rules the world”. ???? ‘Like a Prayer’ is a phenomenal song.
I had Scissor Sisters’ She’s My Man running through my head when I woke up, so I’ve paired that with Lonestar Memories. If my goal is to smell like the kind of woman who takes her drinks with dust and rusty razor blades I think this is the scent to do it in.
Perfect!
A+
Somehow song pairing and perfume are themes I can actually do. Perfumes can evoke a time, a mood, a place, a person…there are just so many options. If I had any Poison I’d pair it with Matchbox Twenty “Unwell” but this morning I woke up with a desire for a light, pretty floral. SOTD is California Reverie and the song is the Oh-So-Literal California Dreaming, the Mama & Papa’s version, now an earworm I’ll probably have the rest of the day.
You smell lovely.
Matchbox 20 was a great band..are they still around?
That’s an earworm I would take — why are my earworms always songs I don’t like??
I like this theme. When I was trying to make my own stuff, I often got ideas from music. I still have a couple of those ideas knocking around in my head but haven’t gotten around to trying them. I still have all my stuff, so I should try to get back to it.
So anyway, I’m feeling kinda metal today, so I’m wearing Bulgari Black. I’m off work today for Good Friday, so I’m probably going to be smelling awesome while giving my house the cleaning that it so desperately needs and that I’ve been putting off.
I’m listening to “The Hunter” by Mastodon (the song specifically, but that’s also the title of the album), and that really seems as good a pairing as any for this perfume.
And since we’re on the subject of music-perfume pairings, I’ve long thought that Iris Silver Mist is an Opeth song in perfume form, in my mind something off the “Blackwater Park” album (maybe because I know that album the best), like maybe “Dirge for November”, but I think a few others on the album could fit.
https://open.spotify.com/track/10g9fCnwqXnQITuj75YufB
https://open.spotify.com/track/0KB5mXwlNtyZSzMV8nufxn
I probably would’ve done that today if I had any ISM.
\m/ ( >_< ) \m/
Adorable emoticon – it’s a headbanger, yes? I just lucked into a sample of Iris Silver Mist and will try it paired with Opeth.
Agree about music leading to ideas about fragrance – my brain parses them similarly – their emotional impact, density/transparency, darkness/lightness, and so on.
My brain links perfume, not to music, but primarily to light and shade and colour, and thence to mood, style and purpose– purpose understood, that is, as what the diary contains, not the overarching purpose of perfume, which first and last for me is to smell good on my terms. I love the fact that we all process it so differently.
You smell great! ????????
Late to the party and forgot the challenge today. Today I am sitting in a cloud of vintage Bal. I was thinking of transitioning to no 5 after Bal wears off.
There are some things you can’t cover up
With lipstick and powder
Thought I heard you mention my name
Can’t you talk any louder?
I guess I’d wear Misia if I had it….
When you come up in May, I’ll give you decant of Misia, and also of Coromandel, and I’ll remember to bring them this time! I’m not convinced you’ll like Misia, but you should definitely try it a few times. You wanted to try Jubilation 25 too, I think. I’ll do one of those as well. Hey, I’m looking forward to our May meeting. That week is the last of teaching, and I want to finish all my marking before I pootle off to the States. Your visit will give an excuse to get away from my desk and play for a couple of hours.
I am counting down the days!
Even though sometimes I think I know everything (lie, I know i don’t know anything) I don’t know this song, and now I want to. What is it?
Elvis Costello wrote it and gave it to Dave Edmunds…Girls Talk
And love that song.
Ooh, forgot to put in a link to the song I was actually pairing today:
https://open.spotify.com/track/2YmNcSuE0Bv2KdHf9Ehewu
I had another one that I thought of but couldn’t do because I don’t actually have the perfume: “Grandloves” by Purity Ring (w/ Young Magic) with Tubereuse Criminelle.
https://open.spotify.com/track/7H1MVTCY4zJJtzwlu611zY
In La Chasse aux Papillons today, because it’s light and pretty and it’s a warm spring day and I’ll be spending a lot of the afternoon carpooling. Song? Well, “Someday, Someway” has been in my head all week, and it’s a song for a Friday afternoon, isn’t it?
I love Marshall Crenshaw.
I haven’t been able to think about the poll this week, so I do hope we’ll do it again. Multiple exercise classes today, so I won’t be wearing perfume until late, unless possibly a light touch of Guerlain Meteorites or Chanel 28 la Pausa.
We will do it again, no worries! Enjoy exercising — I ate all day today, instead.
🙂 At least your jaw muscles will be perfectly toned!
I chose Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail today, and I don’t know if this is related or appropriate to the scent, but I have Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” stuck in my head this afternoon.
SOTD Diorissimo
Don’t have a song for this, but I did have a dream where I was walking and found a tester bottle (no cap) in the bushes!
Take a look..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuVNZQ2z24c
Lol!
Hahaha! That happens to me all the time!
You smell lovely. Is that a genuine Diorissimo ad?
I guess so. I looked up “Diorissimo ad” on Youtube and that was the first thing that came up 😉
I’m really late today, but it doesn’t seem to matter.
Today I want a perfume that’s all dark and moody, but I don’t seem to own one. Lots of gourmands of various persuasions, but nothing really noir. Hmmph. Well, then, I’ll wear Black Cashmere and pretend it’s darker than it is. I’m going to Chanel today to have my make up done by my favourite artist. She wants to organise me before she leaves to return to full-time study, and she tells me I should update my look for winter. I’m a little surprised to learn that I have a “look”, but there you go. I’d like (you guessed it) a darker, moodier, cooler eye shadow, so that should be fun. And with any luck, I might come home with another sample of La Pausa, enough to tide me over until I buy a FB for my birthday next month.
I hope you enjoy the make over!, and get the sample.
Oooooohhh fun! Enjoy!
Enjoy! Let us know how the EDP is
SOTD = Dior’s Dune EdT. My bottle is aging beautifully. It comforts in its own way.
The tune to match:
Hush now, don’t you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
“Silent Lucidity” by Queeensryche.
Blast from the past! fantastic song!
Love Queensryche.
????????????????
*sob* that song makes me cry!
Coco Mademoiselle EDT and Brittney Spears’ Oops, I Did It Again. A tune so similar to so many others, seemingly unremarkable and common, emanating from a vessel whose delivery makes it all look too simple, too easy. Yet, the song is so expertly produced and crafted, it gets inside your brain and doesn’t leave. That’s Coco Mademoiselle EDT to me and I love every second of the tune it plays on my skin.
That is so so perfect! Excellent description and pairing!
That is so so perfect! Excellent description and pairing!
So much fun reading everyones songs. Linking songs to perfume isn’t something that’s occured to me, so I hope this will broaden my horizons going forward.
So today Im wearing Arbole Arbole, just because, and i keep getting Gustav Holst’s Mercury in my head for it, even though I would not have chosen to pair those consciously.
Happy Easter, everyone!
I waited all week to pair No. 19 with my fave Allman Brothers song. Then last night it hit me that with the word “cross” in the title it would be in poor taste on Good Friday. Luckily I had four whole days to save myself from sticking my foot in my mouth once more. Sigh.
Anyway, ended up wearing both Hove Vetivert and Carnation. Straddling spring and summer, I guess. Happy Easter, all.
You can always post it on Monday 🙂
I would not be surprised if some of us continue this into next week as it has been such a fun project.
Happy Easter to you too!!!
Very, very late to report, though I did do the pairing this morning but never got around to writing about it: Parfums d’Empire Azemour with Elvis Costello, “Tart,” which is about oranges in the streets of Seville. Used up the end of that sample…probable need to think about getting more in some format.
I did seriously think about pairing Sel et Vetiver with Morrissey, “Everyday is Like Sunday,” though — as someone suggested before I got up. But…too many memories. Too many, not so good memories (the song, not the Sel et Vetiver, which I love). There was a very long summer in university spent working in a foreign country in the “coastal town they forgot to bomb.”
Oh, love Tart + Azemour! Nice.
