Thursday scent of the day 3/30

Posted by Robin on 30 March 2017 259 Comments

beach sunset Vancouver

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Ayala Moriel Sunset Beach (and it's a shame I am not trying it on location).

Reminder: on 3/31, your pick of Swap Love or Blind Love...wear a fragrance you acquired via a swap, or wear a fragrance you bought unsniffed. Double bonus points for wearing one of each, triple bonus points for a Blind Swap Love. If you don't swap or buy unsniffed, just wear a fragrance you love. (adapted from a suggestion by Pixel)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is untitled [cropped; and I am not positive but I think this was taken at Sunset Beach in Vancouver] by sneakerdog at flickr; some rights reserved.

I’m on a recruiting trip for work today and tomorrow so I grabbed a couple of “professional” seeming samples from the sample tin of mystery on my way to the airport.

Today is La Femme Prada and I HATE it. My notes from the last time I wore this seem positive but underwhelming — perfect for recruiting, right? Ugh no today it just smells so sticky-sweet and I want none of it.

I thought as much La Femme. They took candy and then added this weird saccharine note that is really shrill.

Patty over at PP talked about Superstitious yesterday, so I pulled out Une Fleur de Cassie, and am enjoying the carnation goodness. For some reason, don’t have high hopes for Superstitious, but I do favor floral aldehydes.

Oh, I wonder why? I don’t have high hopes because I don’t generally adore floral aldehydes.

I have no idea what I’m wearing. I was going through a box of samples and one vial was unlabelled and half-full of a coral-coloured liquid, so I dabbed a little on and then just poured the rest of the vial all over my hands. It smells like creamy sweet coffee and chocolate (but it isn’t CSP Café Moka: I have a bottle of that and this isn’t it). It’s very simple and REALLY good, whatever is. I guess I’ll never know.

It could be a more concentrated version of CSP Cafe Moka.

Are there cards without vials hanging out in your sample box? I hate it when they label the card and hook a blank vial into it for this exact reason.

SOTD Cuir d’Ange, which was a blind buy that I ended up loving. Ebay is a good source for some of the more polarising Hermessences, lightly used. Vetiver Tonka and Ambre Narguilé, not so much.

I have a tin of Lush Potion solid perfume (solid is right, as unyielding as a tabletop, but so much clovey-carnation goodness): on the bottom it says MADE ON 15/OCT/07 USE BY 15/OCT/08. And here it is, 30/MAR/17, and it still smells as good as it ought to. Expiry dates on food are dubious at best: expiry dates on perfumes are sheer nonsense.

Bear – I would be more than happy to take that staledated bottle off your hands :P

I went overboard 2 years ago when Lush had their holiday sale, and a year after the expiry date, my Lord of Misrule shower gel has separated, but a quick shake, and all is golden. Good thing, because I have a bottle of Dirty and Rose Jam yet to use up…..

Kelly Caleche for my first day back at work, following my husband’s treatment. Yesterday I wore Durga as they rang the bell to celebrate his last day of radiation. Not sure how I feel about Durga. I think it smells better in the vial than on me. Or at least very different. The melon is honeyed, but also earthy somehow. Or maybe that’s the musk. It’s interesting at least. Will try again another day.

    SOTD =. Tauer Dark Passage

This was a blind buy love only available through a Kickstarter project several years back. I am really getting the patchouli and birch and cacao today. LOVE LOVE LOVE. If anyone has an unloved atomizer of this, I would swap for it :-)

I had no takers for a freebie I mentioned earlier in the week. I have a pack of new mascara to send to anyone in the U.S. who posted a comment last week in one of last week’s daily SOTD. Caveats apply that I cannot replace it if the package somehow gets lost or damaged in the mail. Click on my name to get my comtact info.

I was originally in Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu, but now have several new The Body Shop scents sprayed on different parts of my body.

Bowhanti is my favourite, I think it’s a very nice woody perfume – reminds me a bit of Feminite du Bois. I think it should be a little bit cheaper, but otherwise a really good job.

I’m wearing my most gorgeous recently acquired shirt today, and so had to pair it with my most gorgeous recently acquired fragrance: Galop. A blind split that I knew wouldn’t go wrong, but I was unprepared for just how *right* it would go! Galop makes me feel like Helen of Troy.

It’s a great big delicious red rose wrapped in slightly sweaty leather, to my nose. Simultaneously elegant and feral in a Pre-Raphaelite sort of way. And the drydown is gorgeous — it seems to fade away and then get a second wind and return as a radiant, shimmering scarlet thing licked with rose syrup.

SotD = Apres l’Ondee, eight sprays. It’s almost impossible to over-apply this one.

It’s not been raining, but after heat and wind yesterday with cool weather ahead today, the scent fits my mood. It’s nice to wear Apres l’Ondee in the morning as I typically choose it for afternoon or evening. I wonder why.

Rushing in and out to say hi on one of the few days I am still commando, (because too too busy)…it is almost 6 pm here. I have been wearing and enjoying tremendously April Aromatic’s latest, Agartha, one of the happiest springiest scents I have. It was a Hajusuuri size sample with no regrets whatsoever. Also wearing the very much rationed le Temps d’une Fete, I relocated a long lost sample and almost wish I didn’t as I love it to bits. Left another message, in French, at Nicolai’s parfums trying to verify the rumour they still make it on special request, but alas, resounding silence. You all smell lovely or if you don’t I am sure you will tomorrow!

    Happy Thursday guys!

    1) SOTD: Homemade (unscented) body oil serum and Eau de Soir because I must admit, I love it. I may need to buy a full bottle of this as a b day present in a few weeks!

The body oil serum is an experiment, a less expensive take on Kahina’s Body Serum. Instead of Morrocan Argan oil, which is (rightfully) expensive, using grapeseed oil as the base, then swapping in avocado. watermelon seed and sunflower oil. I then added some drops of (synthetic) Vitamin A + E. The texture of this mixture is not as light as Kahina’s but it absorbs beautifully and I think that that you if have dryish and sun damaged skin, this mixture may work to soothe. I will publish a definite recipe in a couple weeks after experimenting.

    2) Meeting up with a flaky friend up from Texas after work! I have not seen her in a year and a half so it will be nice to catch up!

Wearing Fleur de Chine this afternoon. Such a gorgeous spring day today, I was too hot in my jeans, and it feels so good to be bare legged! I did some weeding around the Daphne bush which smell’s glorious, it really is one of the most delicious smells, like tangy lemon sorbet or lemon sherbet whipped into cream.
Had an observation at work which was a bit stressful, so glad it’s over, and now can look forward to the Easter holidays with my little monkeys. About to decorate hard boiled eggs for the Egg Rolling competition at school tomorrow.

Ancient Resins + Dries van Noten for me.
Robin: I can’t tell on my bottle of Stash oil if it is silicone based, but it doesn’t have that weird texture I think of, and is pretty potent, just a few drops kind of a scent. Hmm.

Plum on my right arm, 1970 on the left and a plate of toast and home made plum jam in front of me. Waiting for sunrise…about 115 minutes from now.
1970 is more jammy and less sweet than Plum, denser but closer to the skin
Plum is bigger, has that slight moringa sweetness
The toast is crispy, not too crunchy. Unsalted butter is smooth and creamy. The jam is sticky, deep red and rich, with a hint of prune.
1970 wins in the perfume category.

SOTD is 4160 Tuesdays “Who Knew?”.

    Top: strawberry, grass and bergamot;
    Mid: cedar, sandalwood, ambergris, rose and geranium;
Base: vetiver, vanilla, green tea and benzoin.

Kiss test: it’s a very nice frog, but it’s a frog rather than a prince, for me. :^)

The ones I love are Urura’s Tokyo Café (now Tokyo Spring Blossom, powdery violet/rose) and A Kiss by the Fireside (peated whiskey). Will retry Captured by Candlelight as it made a good first impression. Up the Apple and Pears was so-so and I didn’t like The Buddhawood Box.

She has a great choice of small bottles and a discovery pack, so really worth trying out.

Missed a few days! Hope everyone is well. Cat with feeding tube has gained half a pound, my son who was in Africa is home and happy, and my husband is feeling chuffed for having asked for a raise (and was not turned down.. . if not exactly given a direct answer).

Challenges: Still no work for me, cat needs so much care!, and said son is leaving on Tuesday for Jordan for two months…

Delights: Coffee from beans my son brought back from Tanzania, our garden in the sunshine, and the swapmeet. I thought the swapmeet was about getting what I wanted. I got decants of a few fragrances I wanted, but loads of things I did not know I needed… weird and wonderful things!

Today’s weird and wonderful perfume: The impossible to say quickly 5 times in a row–Quinacridone Violet (DSH). Very weird. Strong, but with almost no sillage. It goes on lemon/lemongrass territory (not a fave note so I am not hankering for an FB), then veers into distinctly li hing mui territory (those salty dried plums), with a puff of slightly powdery violet rounding it all out. Wouldn’t want to live here, but awfully glad I got to visit!

Glad your kitty is improving and your son is happily returned from Africa. Out of curiosity, if I may ask: will he be doing more volunteer work in Jordan or some sort of study…? I’m scratching my travel itch vicariously through other people these days.

Me too! That is scratching my travel itch through others…hopefully that can change in a year or so… My son is enrolled in a boarding school in Madaba for the fourth quarter–so he will be studying (he’s in 10th grade) and hanging out with kids from around the region.

We just came back from shopping for gifts. Among the items, I bought him a few bottles of cologne from Body Time, a local perfume and soap shop (used to be call The Body Shop before Anita Roddick bought the name) to bring people as gifts. My son is a little dubious about giving perfume as a gift, but I have tried to assure him it will be well received. We’ll see!

Surfing The Sample Sea Day 10!

    Reeking havoc in:

    Parfum Rare
    Unter der Linden
    Purple Reign
    Fils de Dieu
    Camellia (Aroma M)

It’s been said that it takes 21 days to form a habit, but I figure 10 days is much more my speed. (Actually I think it’s more like one day, but I’m not always sensible.) I’ll be continuing my sampling spree until I’m done but will most likely not inflict this upon y’all cuz boring. Now I just gotta figure out how to wear what I like as my sotd while still pursuing my project.

Am in Los Angeles for a conference, so I brought only California themed samples. Today – the gorgeous Oliver Peoples by Byredo. This stuff is great – it reminds me of sunshine and warm rocks and scrubby bushes and eternal optimism. (I lived in southern California in my early 20s, and it perfectly fits my happy memories.).
