Thursday scent of the day 3/23

Posted by Robin on 23 March 2017 261 Comments

dandelion pattern

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Kerosene Unforsaken, perfect for a way-too-cold spring day.

Reminder: on 3/24, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve gone from complaining about having 2 kids at home during this cold March weather to being humbled and grateful that I get to see another cold day with my family.

We were going to go into London on Mothering Sunday, but will do something local instead. Pub lunch and playground probably.
It’s all so senseless, thats all. Poor, poor people, and their families, who will just go on suffering, and then it happens to another set of families.. You’re right, we are so lucky to be at home with our babies, I’ve been thinking a lot about Jo Cox’s family today.

Really every day is a gift, isn’t it? There’s just no telling what it will bring.

By the way, I love how you call it Mothering Sunday..

Mothering Sunday is the traditional name for Mothers Day, in the UK.I think lots of people refer to it as Mothers Day now, but I think it’s important, in the traditional sense of Sunday being a day of rest, and simple pleasures (such as mum’s getting breakfast in bed!) I also like to go to the special church service at our village church, when all the mum’s receive a posy of spring flowers and blossoms, which the children gather, and then make at school on Friday afternoon.
I’m not terribly religious, but it’s so nice to slow down and give thanks for the good things at home and in our community. (I hope I don’t sound all Pollyannaish I’m really not honest!)

Very cold today, but I am in one of my big favorites: Diorissimo. Lily of the valley, full spring in a bottle. I adore wearing it. It is such a happy, bright, flowery, uplifting scent. It always makes me smile and laugh!

Wore Fracas to trim the dogwood tree and trim the evergreen hedges in the front yard at the ungodly hour of 7:30AM.
Now all the neighbors can think I’m crazy as a loon (no disrespect loons – you know I gots yo’ back) .
Found a balsamic oil I purchased 10 years ago while spring (?!????!) cleaning and applied to my beard after showering. Balsamic, vetiver, sandalwood, fantastic!
Product I love: Neutrogena Sesame Oil. I purchased the fragranced version a few weeks ago because the stores are always a madhouse and I forgot to check. :D
This smells great, jasmine and slightly powdery musk, and super fast and easy to apply apres shower .
    Triple strength coffee.- ya think?
    LOLOLOL
    Carpe Diem. Peace.

Gosh, so lucky! I had an Americorps assignment in SF and could only afford to live in 1) my car and 2) found a share in South San Francisco. But seriously- no money, so Sesame Body Oil was my jam along with 4711 cologne.

Ha! When I finished law school I toyed with the idea of working with a public interest firm on domestic violence advocacy in Honolulu through an Americorps type program (it might even have been Americorps?) I concluded it was a great gig but that I would have to live in the public library.. to survive on the stipend.

I am in Noir de Noir. Not particularly springy, but it’s one of only 4 (yes, 4, I’m a newbie) FBs I have and since I had to be at work extra early I did not feel like sifting through my hoard of samples. Enjoy the day, everyone. <3

Sometimes on the weekend I sniff sample vials and find a handful that are promising. Then I lay them out in a row with the hope that I’ll work my way through wearing them in the coming week. Doesn’t always pan out, but it’s a start.

I’m trying to be smart about it. I want ALL the bottles ALL the time, but we know how pricey that can be. So I’ve got a spreadsheet where I am keeping notes on my sample days so I can remember what I’d like to buy FBs of rather than just randomly blind buying. My next FB to celebrate my real estate closing tomorrow will be Tam Dao. I’ve sampled that one a gazillion times, so it’s obviously time for a FB lol.

Woke up to read about the horrible occurrences in London.
We received 15-20 cm of snow and -20 C last night.

I needed a gentle hug, so I went for Miller Harris – L’Air de Rien – to me, it smells of a warm hugs delivered from a lover first thing in the AM.

    No perfume for me today…

my cat is 22 and this is it for her, I took her to Bluepearl hospital in Manhattan last night, I was told it’s time to put her down. I’m stressed besides being sad and devastated because It’s very hard to find a honest and reliable place in the New York area you can trust for pet cremation. Every places I looked up online have bad reviews with horrific awful stories, mostly pet owners given the wrong remains of their pets. As if I needed to worry about cremation on top of having to out her down. But it looks like I found a place in Long Island, they offer same day cremation with a viewing.
I’m also looking for a house calls vet so she can die in peace at home but it looks like those with the highest reviews online are all booked for days, nothing available before next week, she might have to die at the hospital…

Prada Candy Florale is my SOTD.

My Dad went into the hospital early yesterday morning because of lingering nausea. It turns out his heart rate is very high and he has fluid around his heart. The doctor got his heart rate down, but he will be in the hospital for a few days.

We watched the London news coverage from his hospital room. Sad day.

Sample Sea spree continues (Day 3, y’all!) and currently luxuriating in Azemour Les Orangers (ooh baby) and will perform my next daring feat by also sampling Eau de Magnolia, Fleur de Narcisse, and Field Notes from Paris simultaneously! For my encore, I will later attempt to also sample Essences Insensees 2015 (jasmine) and Tenero Narciso. Prepare to be amazed, ladies and gentlemen!

I was not expecting such a strong tobacco leaf note on my skin! It really dominated for the first couple of hours, and I kept looking for the floral notes to no avail. I find it a bit masculine for my tastes, in that leather armchair-humidor-library in an oldschool men’s club kind of way. As it dries down, I really like it and I think it’s something I need to spend more time with. On its own. ;)

Nose completely stopped up today. Which is better than the horrible sinus pain and hacking cough of the past few days, but again I cannot smell a thing.

My dog is absolutely thrilled to be attacking an empty 2-liter plastic bottle: chasing it across the floor, pouncing on it, doing his best to KILL THAT SUCKER. He cracks me up. I will have to take it away from him once he starts gnawing bits of plastic off the mouth of the bottle, but until then he’s having so much fun!

If I could smell I’d be wearing Le Temps d’une Fete.

Pups with plastic bottles are so entertaining! I used to have a video of my uncle’s dog destroying a gallon jug that was a favorite mood lifter.

I love watching birds play. When I was a kid I would beg to go to the dollar store to buy wooden spoons to give the macaws. They loved tearing apart the soft wood :) These days I don’t have birds around but I always make sure to take some pecans when I visit my uncle and his parrots. Apparently, crunching things with your big, strong beak is loads of fun.

Wearing OLO Cedar and Rose perfume oil. Also has a rosewood note in there. I’m very particular about wood notes and the woods in here are so natural smelling-like freshly chopped wood. Fresh and a little green. I’m finding it uplifting today-it’s nice and sunny out, but the events of the world hang over like a dark cloud ???? My thoughts are with London today.

So something has happened with me an the Infusion d’Iris Absolue. I told you that I was still a bit skeptical the first time I wore it, was still wondering if I were an iris person. Well, it’s been calling my name the past several evenings and last night I seriously couldn’t stop smelling myself! :D I’d love to try the original now as well, so I’ll probably order a sample or decant this weekend.

The original is nice, too. Not as warm and not powdery. I think it works better in warm weather than the Absolue does.

Jo Malone Iris and Lady Moore. This should have been added to the permanent collection. As expected, longevity is on the shorter side, but it leaves a hint of pleasant powderiness.

I read about British MP Tobias Ellwood who helped at the scene in London. We can have hope that the better character of humans can prevail in the face of turmoil. My prayers are with London and the families whose lives are forever changed.

The whole collection was one of JM’s best seasonal releases. White Lilac and Rhubarb was a great lilac tempered with tart rhubarb.

    Thursday!

    1) In addition to horrible news out of London, there were also killings in Wauwatosa, WI last night as well. There seems to be a spreading spell of nihilism in our Western World. Let’s find a reason to care for each other and reject this spreading cancer.

    2) ANYWAY. In JM Dark Amber &Ginger Lily- perfect for a chilly, partly sunny morning. The rains return this afternoon!

    3) Coffee and an(homemade!) egg sandwich with avocado, and deep thoughts for breakfast.

      1) I have to assume the popularity and/or election of strongmen and autocrats is a response to this. In our own country, I’ve not seen this proffered as an explanation, but surely they are connected.

      2) Are you familiar with DK Gold? If so, how does it compare to the JM? I keep thinking I need to try the JM, but then wonder if it’s similar to Gold, which I’m not a fan of.

      3) Yum!

That was my morning. Instead, Im wearing Romanza from Masque Milano, a new favorite. Love that narcissus.

SotD = Hiris, it feels like a protective aura. I almost didn’t wear scent this morning but then decided that my lack of focus really means I need extra spritzes today. Let’s go all out and waft on. The world needs us.

Woke up so cold this morning to find that my teen son had opened a window last night. Why why why???

I’m distracting myself with a new shirt today. While shopping the men’s department for a dress shirt for my son, I found two short-sleeved shirts with floral prints that I really like, so I bought them for myself. I’ll wear them when the weather is hot and I’m tired of t-shirts.

The men’s size xs fits me save for the length. I’m only 5′ 1″ so I know how to cut inches off pants legs and sew a hem. Thanks to my mum’s sewing skills I can do a great blind hem stitch by hand. But this will be my first attempt at hemming a shirt with a button placket. I’ll use mum’s sewing machine. Wish me luck.

Note to self: men’s and women’s shirts do button in opposite directions. I’ll just button my new shirt while looking in a mirror.

I haven’t tried much from them either, but I really want to try more! I’ve read really good reviews of several of their fragrances, and I LOVE this one. (I love the combination of herbs/spices + rose in general, but thyme + rose isn’t one I’ve encountered anywhere else, and it really works well in this one!)

Wow. Yesterday was a tough day all around. While I wait for my next work assignment, I watch CNN endlessly–not a mood lifter. After yesterday’s news about London, I wondered what the old Sinn Fein guard would think about this decade’s spate of terrorism. And then I remember the passing of Martin McGuinness…

    Unmoored anyone?

On the pro side of the slate I received my first split packet last night and enjoyed Boy enormously. Today I am testing JM’s Myrrh and Tonka. It weirdly reminds me very much of Canturi, which costs a decimal of a fraction of the JM. Canturi has a chewy citrus thing that happens in the opening, so they are hardly identical, but wearing them side by side they are surprisingly similar considering that their alleged notes barely overlap.

Did I mention how much I like Boy? Wish it had more lasting power. Applied with a heavy hand, it was still present several hours later–but as an elegant skin scent.

Have a day off from work today and did two loads of laundry and paid some bills. So I did do the boring but much needed stuff while wearing Courtesan. Now it’s off to take a shower then take a look at wearing some Theorema since it’s still pretty chilly out and it will warm up tomorrow.

Lots of people – and the world – having difficult times, for which I am very sorry. I am in an oddly contented little bubble at the moment, trying lots of CBIhateperfume perfumes and loving all that they evoke. Yesterday was Wild Pansy, which I love; today the very nice Violet Empire.

I also discovered this week, in a completely difference vein, but suiting the cold here, that I love Epic. So pricey although the discounters have it and it’s always on sale at Luckyscent. I will wait until the fall though!

It looked like a real spring morning here earlier – warm (comparatively speaking,) sunny, clear skies, and I noticed my herb garden has started to come back after dying from a long, cold winter (this is the first year the weather has killed them off. In the past, they’ve always survived so I have fresh herbs all winter.)

I spritzed some MCG Hanbury to celebrate the season, but after the first flush, it was overtaken by last night’s ELdO Bijoux Romantique.
Now the sun’s gone, too, so I’ll move on with my fragrance as well.

Haven’t been around nearly enough, even missed the swapmeet for the first time since I started doing such things…Super busy time, most deadlines met before heading out on a shortish trip.
I put on Eau d’hadrien to finish off a sample, and hopefully project a a subtle lemon awakeness for my flight, but it’s gone from functional to fleeting.
There’ll be some splitmeet decants waiting for me at my family’s in the States, to rectify the situation ;-)

Today I am wearing Cities des Anges an attar by Sultan Pasha Attars. They are indeed a cut above most things on the market and on a par with the most exquisite and high end perfumes. It is a deep full on floral oriental with a shape shifting prismatic journey that takes you from a floral garden in the Alhambra to a bustling city in India…to a bazaar selling exotic spices and sparkly bangles with the sun shimmering in a blue blue sky. It has huge sillage and longevity is wonderful…….he sells on ebay at Scents-rarity. Wonderful!!
