Tuesday scent of the day 3/14

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2017 284 Comments

A very happy Pi Day to you all! (It's also International Ask A Question Day, but if you have questions about pi, don't bother asking me.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez Eau de Parfum, from my cute new travel bottle, with thanks to Hajusuuri.

Reminder: on 3/17, wear a perfume by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the I Ate Some Pie… And It Was Delicious mug is $10.99 at Amazon.

I forgot to spritz myself in EL Private Collection Jasmine White Moss on my way out. The hour loss is still scrambling my brain.

So it’s meh Commodity Orris, which sample spray I found at the bottom of my bag. Oh well. At least I am eating cake (Nigella’s clementine almond cake with a dash of orange water) for breakfast and lunch :D

Cakes are where Nigella really shines, IMO. “How To Be A Domestic Goddess” is the most-used cookbook on my shelf.

I am not sure if I made any of her other cakes, but I have made this one several times :D

If you don’t mind me asking, what are some of your favorite cakes of hers?

*busts in* My all-time favorite is her burnt butter brown sugar cupcakes; I also love the chocolate-pistachio cake and lemon syrup loaf. Those are all from Domestic Goddess.

Oooh! This might be worth looking into. A local cupcakery makes brown butter cupcakes that are incredibly delicious. Lemon syrup loaf sounds divine.

I love Nigella’s recipes! Not too difficult / time consuming.
To be honest, I dont mind cooking but I dont want to spend hours and hours in the kitchen, and I hate having a grocery list that is 2 metres long.

SotD: DK Gold EdT–it has to be at least a year since I wore this last. How can I forget about such a lovely scent? A spicy dryish lily with some smooth woods in the base.

S(ip)otD: The rest of my Harney All-India blend sample with a bit of Assam added in to make a mug’s worth.

    Triple strength coffee.
    Early morning workout.
Waiting for snow/sleet/freezing rain to stop before, shoveling and cleaning off the car.
Breakfast of champions- fudgy chocolate brownie with a THICK coating of peanut butter.
    If not now, when? LOL
    ;)
Hope everyone is doing well, and whatever weather and life throws your way today, you can manage.
    Carpe Diem. Peace.
Almost forgot- Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme, vetiver, leather, and cedarwood. Much better than anything else they’ve released in years.

(Seriously, this sleet is a pain. Once it all freezes, it will be too heavy for the snow blower. I have a feeling there won’t be school tomorrow either, and it isn’t even all that much snow. Yet.)

We have Bob Marley going and hot tea flow’n

Drank some Guerlain Kool aid this morning and wearing Mon Guerlain from a manufacture sample. I was preparing for it to be sweet like my Gourmand Coquin but its not. It has zero sillage on me and fades fast. I am going to stick my neck out like a giraffe and say its not bad. You can throw tomatoes at me but just keep in mind there is a comment policy. ;)

Hey Twin! The lasting power was low on me. In fact its gone already!
When I consider something “bad” perfume wise I am usually running to the sink with a cloth and scrubbing it off. This was not the case.
It would make a good scent for those who work outside the home. The projection is low and its not offensive.

I got a sample and found that I got a lot of lavender ( and quite long lasting ) if I gave myself four good sprays. This also got me over the too sweet opening which I didn’t like. But definitely lavender after ten minutes and I wore it to bed last night and quite liked it. But the lavender itself feels a bit raw and sharp. Overall, much better than I expected but I wish it was richer, deeper, sexier, smarter etc. Just a bit thin.

I wore John Varvatos for women today (brifly), for this week’s community project. I first tried it several months before, today I’ve tried again – no, I definitely dislike it. Such a nice list of notes and such a disappointing scent.
But now I am wearing Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant – a great perfume for this cold day. Yum.

Sheet masks are part of the Korean beauty product craze- they’re individually packaged fabric sheets soaked in facial mask ingredients. There’s a sheet mask for every skin concern, and the sheets themselves often come in cute designs. In fact, I freely admit that I bought this pug-themed sheet mask mainly for the cuteness: https://holikaholika.ca/products/cleansing/mask-sheet-cleansing/Baby-Pet-Mask-Sheet (N/A)

One time use…the masks are saturated with product (enough), and work great!

10-20 minutes…Make it YOUR time! LOL Find a good TV show (I just finished up Victoria on Masterpiece), and tell everyone in your house to figure life out without you for 10 minutes! :)

            You deserve it!

          • kpaint says:
            14 March 2017 at 1:47 pm

I am a regular sheet mask user and also do mine at night while watching tv (in bed.) But I am a skincare junkie and don’t consider a long nighttime routine work – it’s a necessity I enjoy and set time out for every night. (I’ve actually designed my entire p.m. routine to be done in bed, start to finish.)

I’ve given sheet masks to my mom and sister who have a mindset more like Robin’s and I don’t think either of them have ever used one. So perhaps ne’er the twain shall meet ;)

I will say, though, that they combat dry skin like nothing else – especially the deep winter/high summer variety when it seems impossible to get enough moisture into your skin no matter what you do. And since I’ve been using them regularly I haven’t experienced that seasonal transition skin freak-out that used to happen. I’d have a couple of weeks of break-outs and/or dry, flaky skin going from fall to winter or spring to summer. Now my skin looks good and is well-hydrated year-round.

But if you’re not the kind of person who wants to chill for 20-30 minutes with a mask on your face on a regular basis, nothing I have to say will convince you ;)

          • JadainGA says:
            14 March 2017 at 2:17 pm

            kpaint,
For the last couple of years, I’ve also starting pay real close attention to my skin care regimen. Hyperpigmentation is the main thing I’m trying to chase away! I also have several products on my nightstand, and do 3 or 4 steps while watching TV or nagging the kids about their homework….

I’ll never do away with my melasma, but I can definitely see a big difference since doing evening serums and such, and SUNSCREEN every single day of the year…..And I do enjoy laying back and telling everyone that I can’t possibly help them at the moment! LOL :)

Maybe it is because I am so expert at refusing to help my family anyway, LOL…but you guys have not convinced me that I should have to put a sheet on my face just to get my chill time ;-)

Sheet masks are pretty great, but my favorites are the hand and foot masks. me idea–one use and you’re done. I got some foot masks from The Yeon, and my feet have never been so soft. Also, kind of gross, but all the old dead skin came off.

At home today due to the blizzard. At 7am I sprayed in a good amount of S.L Ambre Sultan to face the weather and went out to go to work, but I only made 10 minutes of my daily 20 minute walk to the subway station. Waiting for the bus to make the connection was impossible. Buses are running with extensive delays, so I decided it was not worthy to go thru all the hassle, especially with all tbe snow and mostly ice blowing in your face. I am now snuggled in the couch with my doggy, drinking coffee, watching tv and enjoying the big dose of Ambre that is still lingering on my sweater. Stay safe all of you who are in the path of the storm.

I’ve never been bothered before by time changes, but this one has got my number. The past few days I’ve stayed up way too late (by the clock), haven’t been able to fall asleep once I went to bed, have woken up too late — and been groggy and grumpy to boot! Yesterday morning I caught myself just before I put a scoop of (dry) oatmeal into the coffee filter basket. I ran out of the house with awful hair, no makeup, and worst of all, no perfume! Gah!

Okay, rant over. Channeling Scarlett O’Hara, tomorrow (today, actually) is another day… One very large mug of properly made coffee is down, and I’m contemplating what perfume to put on. I intend to apply a lot.

    Peace and goodwill to all!!

      Rich and curvy indeed!

I have a mini of the Esprit de Parfum. I wish I had a bigger bottle. The Esprit formulation is a bit warmer and less bold than the edt, I think. But its been a while since I smelt original Poison.

I tried the new formula a few months ago but it was pretty screechy. I went shopping after that and think I scared off a lot of other people :(

So funny I saw a 15 ml of the esprit on ebay or a similar site for 150 euros, the 5 ml minis are going for 15-25 euros… Of course a bigger bottle is beautifull, but if its just the juice you want you are cheaper of when buying 3 minis haha

I really, really was planning on taking my online Infection Control test today, but have veered off course and am once again focusing on testing my decants. I couldn’t do both, right?

Left arm, Gourmand Coquin. Right arm, Tonka Imperiale. The former reminds me of a much sweeter Anima Dulcis, and the latter reminds me of Kiss Me Tender. Must devote myself to studying further. ;)

I’m pretty loyal to STC, but there are also a couple of other newer decanters that carry some of the Guerlains and Chanels. STC will not ship Guerlain to NY, which is where I believe Lovestosmellgood lives. :( I believe Scentsplit does not have that restriction, and they’re reliable and have sales, too.

Found a teeny tiny decant of Worth Courtesan in my box last night and spritzed before going to bed. This morning I woke up and thought, “What is that beautiful smell?”, so I spritzed some more. It is discontinued, but there are lots of bottles on eBay, and I may just make one my own. It has a bunch of somewhat odd notes, according to Fragrantica, but I really like it.

That juicy green note reminds me a lot of Baiser Vole edp. I wonder if I’m alone in this? The notes for Gardenia Petale don’t list lily as a component, but I catch a big dose of it. It also brings to mind Anais Anais, particularly texturally. Both make me feel like there’s a thick white cloud swirling around me, if that makes sense.

I haven’t smelled either Baiser Vole or Anais Anais in a long time so can’t help you there. But there does seem to be a hint of spice in tgere which may give it a lily vibe, especially in the beginning.

On first sniff, I liked Pillow Talk the best of the 3 and I put that on last night. I was really jazzed about it at first as I don’t have anything with a lot of pepper in it. But it definitely turned vanilla on me, which isn’t a bad thing. I just wished the pepper would last longer. I may wear Earth Mother tomorrow. We’ll see. Out of all the samples I’ve received so far, I like The Mauve best. But I haven’t pulled any triggers on a full bottle purchase.

I have an old bottle of EDT and it’s really a pretty scent. It’s not “me” but very springy and floral-spicy. Actually it is nice and cheerful for this lazy day of spring break.

I don’t like perfume oils, in general: low sillage, and (oddly) greatly reduced longevity. Probably my skin.

Maybe because it’s a musk? I’ve had that experience with other musk oils. I have a couple of perfume oils that are pretty potent and do project. I first thought that since they are oils, I should apply more heavily. I was uncomfortably wrong about that.

SOTD is “Pillow Talk” from 4160 Tuesdays. Probably just staying in today and lay around in bed, so this scent is fitting and comforting.

Sampling? I’ve tried this one a few times and wanted to like it so badly. I love the whole concept behind it but it is so woody on me that I literally smell like pencil shavings.

Yes, sampling. I’ve heard a lot about it so thought I’d give it a shot. I enjoy it. Definitely woody but the lime/peppery opening is just too brief for me and then it’s nice and woody but just meh. So it’s warm and nice but not something I’d like a full bottle of. It kinda reminds me of Gypsy Water, but I like Gypsy Water better.

Interesting, I was just reading Katie Puckrik’s review of this over the weekend. She debunked most of the initial hype around this as a pheromone said most people liked it, cautioned NEVER to use more than two sprays (at most), and warned that a few people HATE it.

I’m wearing John Galliano EDP on one wrist and Juliette Has a Gun Mad Madame on the other because when I was sampling one it reminded me of the other (I can’t remember which way ’round- I think JG made me think of Mad Madame, but my notes don’t say)

Report: John Galliano is softer, quieter, with less projection, and without either the ambroxan or the dark berry notes of Mad Madame while adding aldehydes instead. Most of the similarity is just the concept of musk-tinged rosy floral. Honestly I think I like the John Galliano better- I think it’s a more rounded composition and actually quite elegant for something that comes in a 30$ bottle. Mad Madame is a lot like John Galliano’s wild baby cousin, I think.

If I owned Arquiste Ella, I would have worn it today. Instead my SOTD is Gris Montaigne.

Here’s the deal with Gris Montaigne–the imagery and even the name are all wrong. This one, by another name, WOULD smell more sweet… or, well at least garner more enthusiasm. It is so not austere cool grey and rose.

If I close my eyes and sniff it, and try to free associate it, I think of resins and florals from a garden of flowers and shrubs that’s been soaked in a night rain but is now heating up in the morning sun.

Not enough snow in the Cheese state to warrant a snow day :(

I’m craving aldehydes so I wore No 5 EDT yesterday and today I am comparing my sample of Liu current version to the No 5. They’ve got the same feel initially, but Liu turns into vanilla, which seems disjointed to me.

Verdict – I like Liu’s top notes better but No 5 better overall. I guess I like my Guerlinade best with lavender.

Ooh tomorrow I should dig out my sample is Arpege.

Testing some Bruno Fazzolari samples. Feu Secret combines soft cool iris and an almost milky warm wood, very unusual. In fact, it’s so odd that I will need to try it a few more times to decide if I like it or not. Narcisse Au Dela is such a pretty soft floral. I also have Five and Cadavre Exquise (which I am skeered to try, TBH).

It’s intriguing that this visual artist is one of the most interesting perfumers now. I wonder how much his synesthesia has to do with that?

    SoTD is Ormonde Woman.

Tomorrow is election day here in The Netherlands.

I dont want to discuss politics and I know I am not allowed (so thankfull for that by the way, it gets nasty so easily), but these are very exciting times for all big parties involved, and even international media are paying close attention. On top of that there is a diplomatic clash between the netherlands and Turkey. Journalists are probably working overtime. ;)

Snow day today!!! Technically working from home, but not much work going on. So far, I’ve had a nap and made pancakes. Still scentless, but trying to convince my kid to come outside for sledding (she’s getting over being ill, and wants no part of sledding today). If sledding happens, I’ll need something really warm and spicy to stand up to all that cold.

Yay for sledding! I wish we had hills and snow here once in a while. Mostly its flat and wet here.

For me incense scents also work in snowy weather :)

Thanks anyways :) its hard to keep track of everyone’s whereabouts.
I just googled it and a well known drug store chain at least carries it online.
But I want to try before I buy, even when its only 20 euros. :)

I haven’t tried it yet either. There is a You Tube blogger in the Netherlands who goes by Delicious Delights. She did a review of Stash very recently. She is a good reviewer so it may possibly be something you can check out. If you’ve already heard of her and watched this video, please disregard.

I am going to check that Youtube channel!
(I dont watch that many video reviews, so I never heard of her.
I am more of a reader, but it sure is nice for a change) Thanks :)

Raining, I’m wearing Stash, and the cat hates it and is giving me the cold shoulder. I’m not much for pie, and even less for math, but somehow I’m taking an online algebra class. I thought I might like it better if I did it voluntarily, rather than as a requirement, but no, I still dislike it. However, now I can laugh when I make stupid mistakes instead of agonizing over passing the course with a high grade. I still think it’s curious when I am asked to calculate something like the length of a triangle’s side, or the speed of trains passing each other because IRL I have never had to do such a thing.

Stash gets a lot of mentions here!
You are really making me curious. I wonder if its sold here…its not very expensive, right? maybe try a few drugstores tomorrow.

I’m with your cat on Stash, and love algebra. I’ve used it extensively in my past 2 careers, as well as in life-in-general. Hope it breaks through for you!

Oh, wait – make that 3 careers. Okay, I’ve used algebra in pretty much every job I’ve had, though to a lesser and greater extent depending.

Very good morning, NST. It’s Wednesday, but I have been feeling it’s Thursday since yesterday morning, and I want it to be Saturday. My orientation in time is all up the creek at the moment.

Monday a huge parcel arrived on my desk, and many layers of wrapping later revealed a bottle of Beloved from wonderful Kanuka! So, no surprises about what perfume I wore yesterday, to bed, today, tomorrow….it’s so pretty. I’ve built my outfits around it; I’ve wafted it at Dakkie and Isabella (Dak was confused, but that’s his normal state) and I have thrust my wrist out st any one who shows even the slightest inclination to stop and chat to me. I even asked my archetypically absent-minded-professor colleague what he thought. He was more confused than Dak, but sometimes I get a mean streak.

If you can’t be well and Beloved, then be well and beloved, but if you can, be both.

Home today due to the “blizzard”. Although we did pick up several inches, it has already turned to rain and sleet. It was nice to have the day off. I slept later than usual, made chicken stock this morning and already have tonight’s dinner ready to go. I just applied Rahele after taking a late shower. I’m really enjoying it again today.

Have been saving a generous decant of SHL 777 (is it aircraft? No, but the full name is too long to spell out) Rose de Petra for a “special occasion.” (Thanks, elisa!) I guess I decided that waiting for Pest Control to take care of the ant swarms in my kitchen and bathroom was just that special day, so I’m wearing it now. (And still waiting for the [ex]Terminator, who is now 4 hours late and probably not coming.)

Wow, is this a beauty. Beautiful rose accord joined by spices. Smells, and is, expensive. I’m actually a little concerned that my other roses might smell cheap by comparison…

Really should not take advantage of the STC sale, but am pondering anyway. I’m curious about the YSL Le Vestiaire des Parfums collection. Has anyone tried them? Are they worth testing?

Joining monkeytoe in DK Gold, but I’m wearing the EDP. One of these days I’d like to try the EDT to compare, but I’m perfectly happy with the performance of the EDP.

Also, the coworker whom I share an office with and is sensitive to perfume is on vacation this week. So I luxuriously gave my skin 6 or 7 sprays, my hair 2 sprays, and my shirt 2 sprays! Figure I better take advantage.

SOTD and Dior #2 is “Ambre Nuit”.

Notes: grapefruit, bergamot, rose, pink pepper and amber.

A perfectly serviceable amber. Not worth going out of your way for though.

So tired and so busy today, I agree the clock change has been tough. In the past two days I went past a gas station at least 5 times, yet my car’s tank is still almost empty. Can. not. think.

Scentless so far, but I’ll have a few spritzes of Apres L’ondee this evening post-shower, with thanks to nicolasix for the inspiration.
