Thursday scent of the day 3/2

Posted by Robin on 2 March 2017 370 Comments

Dries Van Noten Envelope Clutch

Happy Almost-Friday! Plus, it's Lou Reed's birthday and National Banana Cream Pie Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am trying JJLook's combination of Aftelier Ancient Resins (a very thin layer) and Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle. Still not quite freaky, but getting closer.

Reminder: 3/3 will be Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday — wear your oddest fragrance. Suggested by Monkeytoe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Dries Van Noten Envelope Clutch ("Dries Van Noten's envelope-style clutch is handcrafted of navy satin embroidered with pink flowers") was marked down from $990 to $399 at Barneys, but then it sold out.

Good morning. Last week I went to Saks and they did not have Mon Guerlain there ????. I told you I would give a report, but sorry it wasn’t there .

Yes, I went too and it wasn’t out but they had it tucked away and gave me a whiff of it. Very sweet! Very Guerlain!
        Not for me!! :)

        Bottle is gorgeous, however.

The scent I feel in love with was Neroli Outrenoir from the L’Art et la Matiere collection. Really pretty and intense tea/neroli scent. Love.

I like NO as well, was hoping it would be in the split meet. BG is having their gift card event soon..may have to splurge.

Rats! I was hoping with the lavender as one of the notes it wouldn’t come across sweet..but mon exclusif was sweet and they say its the same fragrance. Thanks for the report back Floragal

NO would have been impossible to split as it has a permanent bulb atomizer. Ptooey! I ended up getting a travel spray through Shopfranceinc.

I’m so glad I’m not keen on that kind of luxury, as I will never be able to afford it. It is very pretty though.
Not really weird to me, but plenty of my non fumehead friends do find it so, Goutal’s Sables. One of my later Goutal discoveries, but on some days nothing else will do.

Montale Boise Vanille, a brand not mentioned much on NST.
Right now it is a doppelganger for Old Spice, later it will morph into an amber/oriental.
March comes in like a lion, howling wind, but sunny.

SotD: CB:IHP Here Piggy (part of the Pride Collection). Truffles, rubber and leather. Purposefully and definitely freaky.

S(ip)otD: Upton Keemun Mao Feng–very roasty and toasty and less red wine-y than many Keemun, but very nice in the morning.

I’m on a ski trip, so I’m not wearing anything this morning- I’m thinking Bat for the post-ski hours, though. I’m hoping Bat + sauna will combine in a freaky-but-still-semi-sensual earthy way, but there’s always the risk I’ll instead end up smelling of both over-ripe human and over-ripe fruit.

Will report back with my findings!

I didn’t get on with SLL Gardenia due to the earthy mushroomy stuff, which is Totally Not My Jam. (I liked the tuberose one, though, go figure.)

Knocking on wood that the power doesn’t go out. Really can’t afford to have work pushed back even further this week (our office building is old and prone to outages) – also don’t want to be without it at home.

Not my favourite fruit but as long as it’s a real whole banana, I am in favour (good energy provider for running). So the pie might work for me as well.

But I have a big problem with banana shakes, and anything banana flavoured, like candy or juice.

No SOTD yet, working on projects that are really frustrating me, in the great outdoors in heat and humidity. Yes, my A/C is kicking off and on and I’m STILL sweaty and irritated =)

On the flip side, I just received great news from the work world and will be starting a new contract at the end of the month!! WooHoo! Will be departing the Sunshine State for the First in Flight State for 13 weeks and then onwards and upwards..so much to do and must arrange for my portable fridge for my fumes (and food of course)! Details, details…This is a good reason to celebrate, and after I am done with the sweaty outdoor work, I will shower and wear guess what? Salome, of course! I have a little dribble left in the bottom of the bottle and it may require some injenuity to get it out.

I paid for college waiting tables in Mt. Rainier National Park. I met many park workers who designed their years in exactly this way! I’m not sure how I’d feel about not being rooted in one place, but I love the notion of floating from one beautiful place to another, and living there long enough to really get to know them!

We’ve talked about doing travel nursing and I suppose if I owned my own place here (and didn’t have cats-they’re thoroughly unfond of trips) I’d consider it more seriously. The hubs dream is a travel gig in Hawaii…

Along the shore, up the road from Wilmington and near Croatan National Forest. You’d be AMAZED at how many people travel and RV full time with cats. They are adaptable and after the initial period of displeasure, (which I’m sure they will let you know about!) they tend to really enjoy it. I plan on going all out Dinah Shore-like, while singing in the wind “See the USA in your Chevrolet!” ???? I think you should totally do it. If you hate it, you can always go back to a “regular” job. Does your hubby have a remote job or is he tied to an office or certain location?

True about the cats, I’m sure. My hesitation is leaving MY job which is the easiest nursing job ever. He works in the CT ICU in a crappy state hospital and hates it so would have no problem ditching it.

            2 March 2017 at 12:40 pm

            O. My. God! You BOTH need to go! Just give it a whirl for a year to see if it fits. Sometimes “easy” jobs are boring as H E Double Toothpicks! I completely understand his job situation- I’m exactly there right now and it has given me the impetus to make a complete change. You don’t have to “own” a place in order to travel. It can still be very financially worthwhile. There are a couple of websites and YouTube channels dedicated to these things with a ton of info about pay packages and how these get divvied up, as well as IRS guidelines and “smart contracting” to ensure you get the best possible experience. I signed up with 2 agencies and immediately found a contract within a day of submitting the application to my chosen hospital. If you would like any info or have questions just let me know????

SOTD was (before mid-day jog shower) Dame Perfumery Chocolate Perfume Oil, which arrived yesterday.

Completely off-topic, mid-day jog was a beautiful fragrant experience. Went outdoors around the office for the first time in months and enjoyed the blossoming almond and maybe cherry trees. The smell was wonderful, and suddenly I had this click and thought that L’eau d’hiver may be the fragrance of early spring in the Mediterranean. I think I’ll be smiling all evening because of this!

SOTD is Alahiiiine – not odd at all, just beautiful. I’m not sure what I’ll choose for tomorrow’s theme … the two most unusual fragrances I own are Kerosene’s Broken Theories (new decant arrived this week) and CdG’s Sugi (bottle came yesterday – yay!). And then there are SSS’s Champagne de Bois and Forest Walk – gorgeous, but definitely not the usual-usual. None of these is really “freaky” but all are “odd” in the sense of out-of-the-norm.

Freak week continues today with Yatagan. The weird herbal dryness is performing well in our vile weather. Very hot and very humid and my clothes are stuck to me and I can’t wear makeup because it just melts off my face. I enjoy Yatagan so much that it doesn’t occur to me to think of it as freaky. But it’s so different that I see your point. I’m wearing its younger sibling, l’Anarchiste, which reminds me of . . . toothpaste! Now that’s freaky.

I haven’t tried l’Anarchiste but that just makes me want to try it.
I don’t really think of any of my ‘freakies’ as freaky any more because all the scents I own I love, so I guess my gauge for freakiness is by comparison to mainstream and more commonly used notes/accords.

SOTD is Santa Maria Novella Nostalgia. It’s freaky because it smells like an automotive garage, but develops a into a amber vanilla worn leather jacket scent.

I’m wearing Oliver People’s today – not weird at all, just really nice. I woke up craving it, so I had to wear it. Little decant is quickly getting lower, sigh.

I’m torn for tomorrow – the only scent that I have that I really consider weird is m/mink and there’s no way I can wear it to school after my husband’s comment “You smell like you just had a threesome with two bears”. I love it, but have never thought of it the same way after he said that.

Lately, I really haven’t been “feeling” any of my perfumes. I’m pretty sure it’s due to the slow, torturous demise of my job, and life transition. Nothing seems to smell like me. I feel like I need a “new life” perfume(OK, perfumes), but I’m still in limbo, and don’t know what that smells like. Anyway, I ended up with an accidental combination of Korres Jasmine body lotion and Bond no. 9 Central Park West. It matches the snow and sunshine we are having here.

I have felt the same way this past year since left my full time job to become self-employed. I’ve sold some perfumes, traded some, regretted it, bought some… :-( I’ve finally decided to embrace this “liminal state” (Joan Borysenko).

      Wishing you all the best!

Perfume for life transitions–boy, does that sound like an Angela article topic, if ever there was one!

I would not be at all surprised if there were some scents that turned out to be “of this life moment” that are not right down the road. I would also expect as you find new direction, you may find new scents that feel more fitting for that new period in your life. I hope you have a few constant, comforting scents to carry you through this tough time, in any case!

Hang in there, lillyjo. I think stress, upheaval, uncertainty, etc. can affect your interaction with perfume like they can your appetite–so I’m sure you’ll get back to loving and feeling right in your ‘usual’ perfumes soon. In the meantime, take the opportunity to find a new scent or two that speak to you right now.

Unlike the smoothly blended Colony by Patou, the pineapple topnote in Libertine is a bit metallic and more than a little weird on me. I love it, though.

SotD = Eau de Guerlain, a wake-me-up in a bee bottle.

After getting some work finished I will counter my sleepiness with a bike/hike at the nearby nature center. Recent rainfall has brought out the greenery, many flowers are blooming.

I’m not wearing an unusual fragrance so I’ll share a personal perfume quirk. I never open a new perfume bottle/decant/sample right away. Whether it’s something new or a scent I’ve already worn, I always wait for a quiet moment so I can savor letting the genie out of the bottle.

Freak is ON today: HYLANDS Spirit of the Glen.

Confession: there is a large plot of daffodils in a common space in my neighborhood. Last night at dusk I just had to go sniff them. The neighbors are well aware of my oddities, so I’m sure they thought nothing of seeing me on my hands and knees, breathing in deeply…

Good for you for sniffing the daffodils. I do the same when I’m walking around my neighborhood. I’ve sniffed lots of flowers, gotten a few odd looks, and met many nice neighbors. When I hike in the park I sometimes stop and lean against a tree. People think I’m resting, but really I like to put both hands on the tree trunk and think about the time and energy it took for a tree to grow so tall. #naturefreak

I love Lou Reed! I betcha my sotd would have suited him, too … vintage Miss Dior. Even though I love it, I do find it kinda freaky. That could be because my dad gifted a bottle of it to me when I was around 12, and I couldn’t imagine wearing it and that lodged in my psyche. Or maybe it actually is a tad freaky? Anyway, it’s such a shame that the reformulation bears no resemblance whatsoever to the vintage. Last night I started thinking about what non-mainstream perfumes currently in production our perfumista community would consider to be classics that are destined to withstand the test of time (disregarding potential IFRA, etc. crapola). Could be a fun community project. :)

My 95 year old mom died.
She was in hospice care for about 2 weeks and actually in the hospice hospital for 2 days. She peacefully, quietly went to sleep with my sister there.. I was in Detroit giving a presentation. I flew back to lax ( wearing sjp stash) and am now flying to Florida with a bit of box of eels for comfort. I packed roller of dyptique rose for her service. It’s quite warm in Tampa and I thought that would be okay to wear. I can’t believe she gone, such a force of nature she was.

SOTD and weird(-ish) perfume #4 is Eris “Ma Bete”.

    Top: neroli, aldehydes and nutmeg;
    Mid: cypriol, styrax and jasmine;
Base: cedar, patchouli and animal notes.

This one is a slight cheat, because I wanted to wear it anyway and would have bludgeoned it into any community project on one pretext or another. But only a slight cheat, because a perfume that is deliberately retro and looking to create an impression of a woman wearing perfumed fur (and not much else) is not going to be very mainstream either.

At the alternative perfumes expo in Paris last June, I spoke to Barbara Herman and tried all 3 of her scents. In the end, lack of cash meant I had to choose between Night Flower and Ma Bete, and I went with Night Flower (which is also wonderful). So for today I have used my Luckyscent sample. Hey, you NST folk in the US who like vintage-smelling stuff and can get hold of Eris so easily, you need to try this! :^D

    2nd Sotd:
Just walked into Eau des merveilles Bleue in a store.

Sprayed it on the back of my hand twice.
This might work for me in warmer weather as an office friendly scent.

Usually I am not a fan of aquatic scents, but this one is more salty than calone.
And I am glad to see for once something that’s NOT girly, pink, flowery fruity and/or gourmand in a mainstream perfume store.

Going to give it another try when temperatures rise above 25 degrees (celcius), so probably somewhere in june :) hahaha

Inspired by Elisa’s choice yesterday, my SOTD is Tauerville Vanilla Flash.

It looks like I’m going to fail on tomorrow’s challenge, as I don’t think I have anything even remotely freaky. It’s pretty funny: only perfumistas could lament not having a weird scent.

I just put on a bit of Puredistance White…

Initially when I sampled this, I categorized it as a simple, powdery floral and didn’t think much of it. The remnants clung to my jacket and after a couple days I was racking my brain trying to remember what I wore b/c it smelled so wonderful.

This one is deceptive and winds up being more than the sum of its parts somehow…makes me want to try more of this line…less so though now that I have checked their prices. ;)

The Puredistance line is pretty well done. The first time I wore White to the office, 2 co-workers followed me and kept wanting to sniff me :-). One of them is now in another building and the other one now wears POAL as a signature scent. I got her invited to a Puredistance event in NYC May of last year. I also recommended she visit Aedes where she got POAL. My work is done :-)

There is a bridge between mainstream perfume and niche/the rabbit hole/other side. Some people stumble upon the bridge on their own, some never find it and others must be gently led. :)
