Happy Almost-Friday! Plus, it's Lou Reed's birthday and National Banana Cream Pie Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I am trying JJLook's combination of Aftelier Ancient Resins (a very thin layer) and Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle. Still not quite freaky, but getting closer.
Reminder: 3/3 will be Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday — wear your oddest fragrance. Suggested by Monkeytoe.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Dries Van Noten Envelope Clutch ("Dries Van Noten's envelope-style clutch is handcrafted of navy satin embroidered with pink flowers") was marked down from $990 to $399 at Barneys, but then it sold out.

My haiku for today
Great haiku!
Good morning. Last week I went to Saks and they did not have Mon Guerlain there ????. I told you I would give a report, but sorry it wasn’t there .
Have a great morning! Your Chai tea and oatmeal combination sounds lovely ☺
Yes, I went too and it wasn’t out but they had it tucked away and gave me a whiff of it. Very sweet! Very Guerlain!
Not for me!! 🙂
Bottle is gorgeous, however.
The scent I feel in love with was Neroli Outrenoir from the L’Art et la Matiere collection. Really pretty and intense tea/neroli scent. Love.
I like NO as well, was hoping it would be in the split meet. BG is having their gift card event soon..may have to splurge.
Rats! I was hoping with the lavender as one of the notes it wouldn’t come across sweet..but mon exclusif was sweet and they say its the same fragrance. Thanks for the report back Floragal
NO would have been impossible to split as it has a permanent bulb atomizer. Ptooey! I ended up getting a travel spray through Shopfranceinc.
I’ve just looked this up on fragrantica, it sounds gorgeous!
Don’t the people at Saks know who you are.. 😉
You smell amazing.
Great choice for odd week. I think it’s both beautiful and odd.
I bought a hand cream that reminds me of OJ Woman — Nubian Heritage raw shea butter cream.
Ooh, sounds good!
Huh. I’ll have to resniff that one. I’ve actually never smelled an OJ! But I do love Nubian Heritage products.
Their scents are reliably solid!
You smell great!
The Oatmeal Revolution . . .
That made me laugh out loud!! HA!
Lovetosmellgood, I think being a young mom really agrees with you! You seem so serene and happy with life. (And we know that little ones can wear you out! LOL) I love reading your daily posts!
Ditto!
Thanks for not judging me that I play Tracy Chapman to my kids , there is only so much little kids music I can handle.
I am exhausted at the end of the day , but enjoying quiet time now while they both nap
My little guy likes to dance to New Orleans funk. Who needs “kids’ music”? 😉
My Dad played Tracy Chapman when I was a kid. I have good memories associated with it 🙂
AH! Good to know
I’m so glad I’m not keen on that kind of luxury, as I will never be able to afford it. It is very pretty though.
Not really weird to me, but plenty of my non fumehead friends do find it so, Goutal’s Sables. One of my later Goutal discoveries, but on some days nothing else will do.
I recently discovered this. I really like it. It’s lovely, and holds my interest.
Wearing Demeter Cinnamon Buns over Fresh Cream Body Souffle. I guess it is kinda weird to smell like a cinnamon bun with vanilla icing, if you aren’t a cinnamon bun with vanilla icing. And I’m not.
That sounds really yummy! You’re making me crave a Cinnabon!
I was thinking maybe I could make a quick trip to the bakery at lunch. I’m driving myself crazy.
… are you SURE you’re not?
🙂
If it walks like a duck and smells like a duck…
You smell yummy. I wonder if that combination would be comforting enough to prevent me from attacking a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
Yum. Maybe I have the energy to make some cinnamon bread . . . ?
Orange Sanguine for me today. I’m hopping a plane to Florida in a few hours for a quick 3 day weekend with my parents. No husband, no kids, just me- woo hoo- sunshine here I come!????
Oh that sounds wonderful. Enjoy! You smell perfect for the occasion!
Thank you! It did seem like an appropriate choice.????
Enjoy the trip. I just returned from there – the weather was sooo nice. Love the Orange Sanguine.
Enjoy your trip!
Oh! that is wonderful. Enjoy your time there. You smell great!
Yep, lots of sun here (and humidity as well). Hope you enjoy your long weekend and get some beach/relaxation time!
Wow – great match of scent to vacation destination. Have an awesome trip!
How nice! Savor.
Fantastic! Good to have a vacation on your own sometimes.
Enjoy every quiet moment
Enjoy you’re trip and catch up with you’re parents. Orange Sanguine sounds like the perfect companion for a trip to Florida!
In Tom Ford Violet Blond. Pretty combination of green violet, iris and jasmine. It reminds me in a way of Apres L’Ondee. Very powdery and not so strong on me. Exactly what I need for today.
I am intrigued. That sounds wonderful and I love Apres l’Ondee.
Violet Blond is gorgeous. You smell good!
Thank you.
I love that one. You smell great!
Thank you 🙂 It is so lovely.
Montale Boise Vanille, a brand not mentioned much on NST.
Right now it is a doppelganger for Old Spice, later it will morph into an amber/oriental.
March comes in like a lion, howling wind, but sunny.
🙂
Triple strength coffee.
Life is good.
Carpe Diem.
Peace.
I’m probably the odd man out, but I love those Montale bottles. They remind me of outer space for some reason. I’m with you on the Carpe Diem, Peace, and Triple strength coffee. Life IS good! rock on Mr. Bear!
I just now heard a woodpecker (can’t see him, I guess he’s on the opposite side of the tree trunk) and thought of you.
Thanks mals86!
My woodpecker is still chipping away, despite the insane winds today.
😀
Bear, we have a dim witted woodpecker at our elementary school, who is DETERMINED to peck his way through the metal flag pole! HA HA HA Bless his heart, he clangs and bangs and never gets thru….. 🙂
Poor Woodpecker, what entertainment for u and the kids tho!
It’s possible he’s actually really clever! Oftentimes woodpecker’s are banging to impress the ladies with their skillz. The sound from the flagpole most certainly must echo impressively for all the ladies to hear and admire!
They are entertaining creatures, JadainGA.
SotD: CB:IHP Here Piggy (part of the Pride Collection). Truffles, rubber and leather. Purposefully and definitely freaky.
S(ip)otD: Upton Keemun Mao Feng–very roasty and toasty and less red wine-y than many Keemun, but very nice in the morning.
Oh, I haven’t tried that and I’m intrigued!
That sounds pretty freaky but I’m also intrigued. Is it wearably weird?
It is very close to the skin after about an hour. It smells a bit like a new pair of wellies and a leather jacket hanging in potting shed.
I never tried Here Piggy either…forgot it existed, actually. I always meant to try Faggot, too.
Shiny sweet medicinal golden Elastoplast. Etat Libre’s Archive 69 as my second ‘Weirdo of the Week’.
Bob have you tried Jardins d’Ecrivains George? It smells exactly like Dettol-y bandaids to me so I wonder if they’re similar?
I haven’t, but it sounds like I’ll have to track it down!
Ooh. Yes, I also found that thst to have medicinal funk.
Alchimie for me today
Yum
You smell great!
Estee Lauder Private Collection. The weather turned very chilly here over night. Im warming up with a cup of laduree Josephine tea.
Eau Duelle, Dyptique today. Very normal, non-freak scent. Maybe a good one to swap as I have a large size of it and have barley used any after 3 years.
You smell great!
You smell great! I wore that last night and was thinking that it needs more attention.
Ooh, you smell nice. I love that scent.
Lovely such a nice one to wear for a cosy evening in, I’ve used up my sample now tho, will try and procure another one soon.
I’m on a ski trip, so I’m not wearing anything this morning- I’m thinking Bat for the post-ski hours, though. I’m hoping Bat + sauna will combine in a freaky-but-still-semi-sensual earthy way, but there’s always the risk I’ll instead end up smelling of both over-ripe human and over-ripe fruit.
Will report back with my findings!
Enjoy your skiing and sauna! Sounds like a great day.
Sounds like a risk worth taking. Enjoy!
Estee Lauder Cinnabar. Warm, spicy (with a hint of Coca-cola, perhaps) and helps me get through the day. I was afraid my colleagues would hate it, but they loved it!
Nice surprise!
Oooh – SL’s Cuir Mauresque smells like spicy cola to me, and I love it. Will have to check out Cinnabar.
SOTD Tauer Phi Rose de Kandahar. I love it now, but I thought it was an odd one when I first tried it. The opening still weirds me out a little- to be it’s a soapy chypre that reminds me of public baths for some reason.
Some of the Tauers are at least a little quirky. The one I’m wearing today seems particularly strange to me – Orange Star.
Orange Star was *appalling* on me — one of the Tauers that I don’t get along with at all. And yet the noted sound right up my alley!
I’ll have to try this one again. I tested it a few years ago and hated it. I was wearing it on a hot summer day, though, which was probably not the best environment for it.
Oh, that’s a beauty! You smell fab????
Freak flag also flapping here.
Tauer, Sotto Luna Gardenia.
Crushed and bruised gardenia, mushrooms, earth and rain.
Not a hint of tuberose in sight.
This never seems to get any love, but I went from first sniff to FB in under an hour.
Another AT! I’m definitely not the only one who finds them freaky then (although I do love quiet a few of them).
“quite” a few . . .
Freaky to start but then fantastic!
I’m a fan of SLL Gardenia, as well. I get more of a gardenia dessert, though.
That scent made me recoil so I immediately tossed my sample vial. Then two days later I desperately wanted to smell it again. Obviously I acted too soon.
Some of my biggest loves are the ones that made me immediately recoil so I always hang on to them for awhile knowing that strange olfactory magic might happen!
This is exactly what happened to me when I first sniffed SL Cuir Mauresque. If I could find a bottle now, I would snap it up in heartbeat. What a shocker the first time I smelled it though! WooWhee!
It was the last time I threw a sample away. Lesson learned!
I didn’t get on with SLL Gardenia due to the earthy mushroomy stuff, which is Totally Not My Jam. (I liked the tuberose one, though, go figure.)
And I got only chemicals from the tuberose.
I either swapped or gave away my decant. No regrets whatsoever.
L’orpheline for me on this ridiculously windy day.
The wind gusts were so loud last night I woke up thinking someone was trying to break into our house.
The wind is absolutely howling! Keeping fingers crossed for the power lines.
Yes!
Knocking on wood that the power doesn’t go out. Really can’t afford to have work pushed back even further this week (our office building is old and prone to outages) – also don’t want to be without it at home.
We made it through the day, hope you did too!
National banana cream pie day?!
I never had a banana cream pie in my life. But I think I get the idea. 🙂
SotD: Sycomore (edt)
Nothing freaky about it, but it sure is one of the loveliest vetivers I know!!!
I know, like really? Was the key lime pie feeling lonely? I don’t know what a banana cream pie is exactly but all these pie days remind me of the movie Waitress, which I really like despite its tragic background.
I wish you all could come over for pie. I would make you a banana cream pie that would make your life complete. And we could talk perfume.
Makes me think of a favourite line heard recently…”When you have a piece of pie in front of you, you know that the next 10 minutes of your life are going to be exceptional”.
Oh, what is that quote from? I need to have it framed in my kitchen!
Is that the one with James Spader? If so, I remember liking it immensely, but then I’m a sucker for a sad song or movie.
Kerri Russell. It’s very quirky but I love the humour. She creates a pie for every occasion 🙂
Ack! I was thinking of White Castle with James Spader and Susan Sarandon, and it was not totally not pie related, but still deliciously edible. My silly brain…
I had tot google that movie.
Is it the one that has the tagline “If only life were as easy as pie”?
If so, how is Nathan Filion in that movie?
He was pretty cute in Firefly… 🙂
He plays the doctor and he’s totally gorgeous in it.
Pies and Nathan, not bad at all!!! 🙂
Your avatar = your cat?
What a sweetie!
As someone who doesn’t like banana anyway I’m boycotting this day.
You smell lovely.
Not my favourite fruit but as long as it’s a real whole banana, I am in favour (good energy provider for running). So the pie might work for me as well.
But I have a big problem with banana shakes, and anything banana flavoured, like candy or juice.
I’m not a clutch gal, but that is a beautiful bag!
No SOTD yet, working on projects that are really frustrating me, in the great outdoors in heat and humidity. Yes, my A/C is kicking off and on and I’m STILL sweaty and irritated =)
On the flip side, I just received great news from the work world and will be starting a new contract at the end of the month!! WooHoo! Will be departing the Sunshine State for the First in Flight State for 13 weeks and then onwards and upwards..so much to do and must arrange for my portable fridge for my fumes (and food of course)! Details, details…This is a good reason to celebrate, and after I am done with the sweaty outdoor work, I will shower and wear guess what? Salome, of course! I have a little dribble left in the bottom of the bottle and it may require some injenuity to get it out.
Carpe Diem indeed, Deva !
Enjoy, onwards and upwards!
🙂
✌????
Congratulations! The great adventure continues.
Thank you!
Hey, great news! I’m very excited for you. Are you moving from Florida, or is the 13 weeks for training?
Sort of moving out of Florida. I am beginning travel nursing and the usual contract is 13 weeks. Keeping my house in Florida for now, but anticipate selling it soon. After this contract, I will work my way westward, then follow the sun and the seasons- mountains in the summer and desert in the winter. ????
I wondered what you were doing about work- that sounds ideal Deva. Kudos to you for acting on what most people only fantasise about!
It’s quite a big change and it certainly has been a process, but there’s nothing worse than being unhappy and NOT DOING something about it. I may completely fail, but at least when I kick the bucket, I can say I tried. Life is very, very short and you only go around once (as far as I know????).
I paid for college waiting tables in Mt. Rainier National Park. I met many park workers who designed their years in exactly this way! I’m not sure how I’d feel about not being rooted in one place, but I love the notion of floating from one beautiful place to another, and living there long enough to really get to know them!
Waiting tables is honorable work and I’ve done it myself, but never is such a wonderful location! Did you stay in the park or did you live close enough to go back and forth?
We lived in dorm housing across from the lodge. It really was amazing to be in the middle of everything day-to-day! And when it was a quiet, low-tourism day, you get the whole park to yourself. 🙂
How exciting! I had to look up the First Flight State. Apparently there’s a lot of controversy about who owns that title. Who knew? Well, I hope it’s less swampy ????
Really? I just assumed it was NC since it’s on their license plate. Less swamp is highly desirable. Don’t really don’t think I could manage another summer here, the sun is just scorching already and it’s still “cool”…maybe I’m part vampire…?
Yeah, Ohio and Connecticut apparently. What oart of NC? I’m envious of your plan and courage to just pick up and go! We’ve talked about doing travel nursing and I suppose if I owned my own place here (and didn’t have cats-they’re thoroughly unfond of trips) I’d consider it more seriously. The hubs dream is a travel gig in Hawaii…
Along the shore, up the road from Wilmington and near Croatan National Forest. You’d be AMAZED at how many people travel and RV full time with cats. They are adaptable and after the initial period of displeasure, (which I’m sure they will let you know about!) they tend to really enjoy it. I plan on going all out Dinah Shore-like, while singing in the wind “See the USA in your Chevrolet!” ???? I think you should totally do it. If you hate it, you can always go back to a “regular” job. Does your hubby have a remote job or is he tied to an office or certain location?
That sounds heavenly!!
True about the cats, I’m sure. My hesitation is leaving MY job which is the easiest nursing job ever. He works in the CT ICU in a crappy state hospital and hates it so would have no problem ditching it.
O. My. God! You BOTH need to go! Just give it a whirl for a year to see if it fits. Sometimes “easy” jobs are boring as H E Double Toothpicks! I completely understand his job situation- I’m exactly there right now and it has given me the impetus to make a complete change. You don’t have to “own” a place in order to travel. It can still be very financially worthwhile. There are a couple of websites and YouTube channels dedicated to these things with a ton of info about pay packages and how these get divvied up, as well as IRS guidelines and “smart contracting” to ensure you get the best possible experience. I signed up with 2 agencies and immediately found a contract within a day of submitting the application to my chosen hospital. If you would like any info or have questions just let me know????
Congrats Deva, onwards & upwards sounds brilliant!
That’s such exciting news, Deva! I really have to applaud your incredible gumption and drive, and you’re an inspiration. Good luck getting all your ducks in a row this month.
That’s sounds perfect Deva.
My sister is an NP and now that mom is gone she is going to do locums for a while. It’s been a long time she has been caring for my mother shouldering much of the burden. She is heading up and out I think finally maybe for year off the grid. Go like the wind!
“Off the grid” is a great plan! There are so many solar options available now that it’s quite possible to be out in the wilderness for weeks at a time. I’m sure she needs some time to rejuvenate after the emotional and physical toll of taking care of a parent in thier final years. So sorry for your loss. It’s heartbreaking to watch a loved one decline.
Congrats, Deva!
Congratulations!
congratulations on living your dream! here’s to exciting adventures and changes.
Thank you????
Congratulations, Deva? Of all things, I am wondering how you will receive mail?
I don’t get much snail mail, just a lot of junk mail. I do on-line banking and bill pay, so don’t think it will be a problem, but there are companies that provide mail service for a reasonable fee.
SOTD was (before mid-day jog shower) Dame Perfumery Chocolate Perfume Oil, which arrived yesterday.
Completely off-topic, mid-day jog was a beautiful fragrant experience. Went outdoors around the office for the first time in months and enjoyed the blossoming almond and maybe cherry trees. The smell was wonderful, and suddenly I had this click and thought that L’eau d’hiver may be the fragrance of early spring in the Mediterranean. I think I’ll be smiling all evening because of this!
That sounds wonderful. I miss almond trees. I used to do research in California almond groves, and it was ridiculously gorgeous. Maybe I’ll wear Yesterday Haze tomorrow in their honor.
Would you sometimes lie underneath them and make almond blossom angels?
Actually, I did that once. How did you know?
Hmm. I have yet to pick today’s scent, but I think I have a 2ml sample of L’eau d’Hiver somewhere…
wore it the other day and was reminded how it might be even better for spring than winter!
I love almond trees, there are many in my street and a baby one at my girl´s school here in Barcelona. They are so lovely.
My freak flag is flying with Smell Bent Artist’s Studio.
I bet that one’s weird, based on my memory of what the art classroom smelled like in school… my grandmother painted china, and that was a more pleasant smell to me.
According to the Smell Bent website it smells like “wet plaster, turpentine soaked rags, stretched canvas, a roll of brushes and drying paint” It is hard to define, but it smells almost spicy, and grassy, perhaps a little like vetiver.
Ooooh. Added to sample list!
Jean Patou Joy, what a grand floral! It transports me to the golden age of Hollywood movies with saturated colors, think Grace Kelly in Rear Window…
Oh, her wardrobe in that movie – amazing! Not to mention her figure – 20-inch waist, do you think?
She was the epitome of pure class and American elegance! Athletic, ravishing, alluring!!
That green suit she wears in RW, and the slinky white dress that Ava Gardner wears in The Barefoot Contessa are my two dream outfits..
I saw an exhibition a few years ago dedicated to Grace Kelly. A lot of her dresses were on display, so elegant and sophisticated! Just wow.
Joy is a classic
You smell wonderful!
SOTD is Alahiiiine – not odd at all, just beautiful. I’m not sure what I’ll choose for tomorrow’s theme … the two most unusual fragrances I own are Kerosene’s Broken Theories (new decant arrived this week) and CdG’s Sugi (bottle came yesterday – yay!). And then there are SSS’s Champagne de Bois and Forest Walk – gorgeous, but definitely not the usual-usual. None of these is really “freaky” but all are “odd” in the sense of out-of-the-norm.
And meant to say Happy Birthday, Lou – you are missed.
You smell really lovely.
Thanks, mals!
I’ve got a sample of that one (Alahine) that I am looking forward to trying. I see it mentioned here a lot.
It seems to be a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it fragrance — I’ll be interested in your reaction to it.
Alahiiiiine!
???? enjoy
Freak week continues today with Yatagan. The weird herbal dryness is performing well in our vile weather. Very hot and very humid and my clothes are stuck to me and I can’t wear makeup because it just melts off my face. What I wouldn’t do to be a half-dressed snow angel right about now, for just a little while..
I enjoy Yatagan so much that it doesn’t occur to me to think of it as freaky. But it’s so different that I see your point. I’m wearing its younger sibling, l’Anarchiste, which reminds me of . . . toothpaste! Now that’s freaky.
I haven’t tried l’Anarchiste but that just makes me want to try it.
I don’t really think of any of my ‘freakies’ as freaky any more because all the scents I own I love, so I guess my gauge for freakiness is by comparison to mainstream and more commonly used notes/accords.
Ha! I read that as L’Antichrist????
I almost wore Yatagan today! I love the scent so much.
Robin, the bag was a steal 😉 ! How much fun it must be to pick out a bag like that, shoes, perfume, etc. I’m always in a rush to get ready, so perfume ( and clothing) is the priority.
SOTD is Santa Maria Novella Nostalgia. It’s freaky because it smells like an automotive garage, but develops a into a amber vanilla worn leather jacket scent.
I like that one a lot more than Bvlgari Black! (dodges rotten fruit)
A steal is right!
I received my practically free travel set of Narciso, thanks to one of last week’s Lemming Alerts. I was is such a rush to take advantage of the deal that I failed to notice it was not the NR I actually wanted (For Her), but who am I to be picky? So I’m wearing the Narciso EdP and it’s not at all freaky, but it is a warm vanilla blanket on a chilly morning.
Yum, I love that one.
Mine is wending its way to me…
When I read the lemming post I was like a dog after a squirrel. I had pressed the Paypal button before I even knew what I was doing… that’s me, barking up at a bushy-tailed Narciso chattering away on a high branch in a tree!
ROFL!
I’m wearing Oliver People’s today – not weird at all, just really nice. I woke up craving it, so I had to wear it. Little decant is quickly getting lower, sigh.
I’m torn for tomorrow – the only scent that I have that I really consider weird is m/mink and there’s no way I can wear it to school after my husband’s comment “You smell like you just had a threesome with two bears”. I love it, but have never thought of it the same way after he said that.
Lol, that’s hilarious! I say wear it after school:)
Your husband’s comment deserves to go into the annals of the NST Husbands’ Snarks! 😀
Bwahahaha!
Oh, I love Oliver Peoples and no one else ever mentions it! High five to your husband for that one!
😀
Ha!, that’s hilarious!
Excellent!!
Hahaha 😀
Brilliant!
If I’d have known it was Banana Cream Pie day, I would have worn Bat. But instead I have on Interlude Woman. Someone mentioned it yesterday and I got a craving.
Happy Thursday!
Now I know I have to try Bat!
Lately, I really haven’t been “feeling” any of my perfumes. I’m pretty sure it’s due to the slow, torturous demise of my job, and life transition. Nothing seems to smell like me. I feel like I need a “new life” perfume(OK, perfumes), but I’m still in limbo, and don’t know what that smells like. Anyway, I ended up with an accidental combination of Korres Jasmine body lotion and Bond no. 9 Central Park West. It matches the snow and sunshine we are having here.
I have felt the same way this past year since left my full time job to become self-employed. I’ve sold some perfumes, traded some, regretted it, bought some… 🙁 I’ve finally decided to embrace this “liminal state” (Joan Borysenko).
Wishing you all the best!
Thank you!
Perfume for life transitions–boy, does that sound like an Angela article topic, if ever there was one!
I would not be at all surprised if there were some scents that turned out to be “of this life moment” that are not right down the road. I would also expect as you find new direction, you may find new scents that feel more fitting for that new period in your life. I hope you have a few constant, comforting scents to carry you through this tough time, in any case!
I do have a few perfumes I always love, for example Coco, and Alien. I am looking forward to the new Alien coming out.
Oh, I have so been there! NOTHING seems right and the world screams incongruity! Very uncomfortable to be in that space but it’s only for a limited time. Things will line up again and everything will be in synch for you. Best wishes!
Thank you, I wish you the best also!
Hope u find you’re perfect ‘new life’ perfume soon! wishing u lots of luck for this year.
Thanks, I’m really hoping my new life smells fabulous!
I’ve been there too. It can be incredibly disconcerting! I hope you’re being gentle with yourself, and trust that you will find your way to what’s right for you at the right time.
It really is disconcerting, but I have faith.
Well said, Holly. Lillyjo, know that you are where you are supposed to be for right now, even if it doesn’t feel “right”. This too shall pass and you will find the right road, and the right perfume.
Thanks, I really needed to hear, and remember this.
I’ve been in those ruts, life-wise, and perfume-wise, sometimes simultaneously. They do pass. Treat yourself well-and hoping things look up for you all around.
Thank you!
Hang in there, lillyjo. I think stress, upheaval, uncertainty, etc. can affect your interaction with perfume like they can your appetite–so I’m sure you’ll get back to loving and feeling right in your ‘usual’ perfumes soon. In the meantime, take the opportunity to find a new scent or two that speak to you right now.
I absolutely take every opportunity when it comes to looking for a new perfume:)
Hoping things take a positive turn soon. Big awesome changes are usually preceded by periods of blah – life is one big sine wave.
I’ve been in the same situation re: perfume. It did eventually resolve itself, but it was a bit uneasy at the time. Hope you won’t have to wait long.
I have to be at a conference for work tomorrow and it will be pretty conservative and buttoned down, so I’m letting my flag fly a day early. Libertine for me. Unlike the smoothly blended Colony by Patou, the pineapple topnote in Libertine is a bit metallic and more than a little weird on me. I love it, though.
Vivienne Westwood? I wish that hadn’t been discontinued!
Boy, is it windy!! I need to wear goggles to keep stuff from flying into my eyeballs.
SOTD Les Parfums de Rosine Rose Praline. Not freaky, maybe different, but very delicious.
Happy Birthday Mr. Reed! If I could he doing something else right now, it’d be sitting in a cozy cafe, eating banana cream pie with The Velvet Underground playing overhead…
J’adore Rose Praline!
I know! I think it’s your fault I ever tried it. Have you tried La Rose de Rosine? I’m curious about that one (and there’s an uber cheap bottle available).
Protect those eyeballs at all costs. Rose and praline sounds wonderful!
Trying! It’s a good one for non rose lovers.
Rose Praline is a yummy one!
I’m finding it really addictive!
I find it very addictive!
Sorry about the duplicate. The firstwas awaiting moderation (?)
Clearly you’re addicted! 😉 RP reminds me enough of Rose Flash that I don’t feel the need for a bottle, but I love the rose-petals-dipped-in-rose-syrup effect of both. And I have a small decant of their Zephir de Rose on the way from the recent TOC sale.
*TPC, that is…
Maybe the jammy effect of the rose? Rose Flash turned out to be a scrubber for me ????-too sweet, sweet. My other love is Rose Kashmirie which is also on the sweeter side. Do report back on Zephir!
That sounds like a ‘Perfect Day’ to me!
To me too! I hope someone somewhere is enjoying that.
I’m keeping it freaky in Guerlain Insolence — banana hairspray.
Insolence wears freaky on me too! I can’t figure out what I smell (probably because I’ve never smelled Parma Violet candy??) 🙂
It reminds me a little of Smarties.
Ooh I might wear that one tomorrow! I don’t have many I consider freaky, that one or L’Air d’Rien probably, although I just consider the latter gorgeous.
I have a few of those, LAdR included. They don’t seem freaky to me anymore, but I’m sure others will beg to differ.
Insolence edt or edp? I like the smell of (most) hair spray. And bananas.
SOTD: Guerlain Angelique Noire. Probably the opposite of freaky but after testing some scents yesterday, I just needed something easy to wear.
that scent is easy breezy..
SOTD: 31 Rue Cambon
I do not wear this one enough!
Banana Cream Pie Day? Yes! Yes! and Yes!
Now were to find a slice.
Exactly. Banana Cream Pie is not so easy to come by as it used to be.
Billy’s bakery
Is it like a banoffee pie? Because I could go a slice of that.. 🙂
My spelling has been atrocious lately! Where, not were, duh.
You smell fabulous!
SotD = Eau de Guerlain, a wake-me-up in a bee bottle.
After getting some work finished I will counter my sleepiness with a bike/hike at the nearby nature center. Recent rainfall has brought out the greenery, many flowers are blooming.
I’m not wearing an unusual fragrance so I’ll share a personal perfume quirk. I never open a new perfume bottle/decant/sample right away. Whether it’s something new or a scent I’ve already worn, I always wait for a quiet moment so I can savor letting the genie out of the bottle.
I do that too! I never try a new one on a work morning! I always wait until and evening or a Saturday or Sunday so I can smell and savor and take it in. 🙂
Me too!
🙂
Me three!
Yay for taking time to enjoy!
Wearing my Noir de Noir today. Been heading up a conference all week- it’s wearing on me and I’m tired. Noir de Noir reminds me of my bday trip to Vegas (where I got it) so I pulled it out to perk me up.
Good luck — one more day?
Yep! Ready for freaky Friday tomorrow (as I’m calling it)!
SOTD is Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack, which is a little freaky.
Lou Reed! Take a walk on the wild side…
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo!
Yum, you smell great!
Freak is ON today: HYLANDS Spirit of the Glen.
Confession: there is a large plot of daffodils in a common space in my neighborhood. Last night at dusk I just had to go sniff them. The neighbors are well aware of my oddities, so I’m sure they thought nothing of seeing me on my hands and knees, breathing in deeply…
In all likelihood, one of your neighbors guerrilla-gardened those daffodils there just for such a purpose!
Nothing smells better than fresh daffodils!- marzipan and crushed leaves, delicious!
Daffodils are my all time favorite flower fragrance. Nothing compares!
Daffodils are the best.
Good for you for sniffing the daffodils. I do the same when I’m walking around my neighborhood. I’ve sniffed lots of flowers, gotten a few odd looks, and met many nice neighbors. When I hike in the park I sometimes stop and lean against a tree. People think I’m resting, but really I like to put both hands on the tree trunk and think about the time and energy it took for a tree to grow so tall. #naturefreak
Oh, that’s great! The mental picture makes me really smile.
Good morning….I could absolutely go for some Banana Cream pie today. nom nom nom nom 🙂
SOTD: Alahine.
I commented above on someone else’s post, but I recently got a sample of this one and look forward to trying it for the first time. I see it mentioned here on NST a lot.
Same here! I bought my sample after so many commented and swooned over it! LOL It really is a beauty. A bit expensive, but on my very very very long wishlist nonetheless! 🙂
The solid perfume of Alahine is also nice – I have both
Day Three of “Vacation,” and no SOTM, yet. I wish OJ Fragripani lasted longer on me than 30 minutes, because it makes me feel like I’m in the tropics. . .
I went into work right at the end of the day yesterday to check in with my sub and make plans for today’s absence. The kids all wanted hugs, and one of them REALLY wanted one when he heard I was sick. Little goober wanted a few days off of school, too! Kinda sweet that they act like they miss me, in any case.
They do miss you
Hee hee. Little goober. Hope you continue to recover.
Agh! I forgot “quickly” at the end of the sentence. It changes the whole meaning if it’s not there. I’m the goober.
Hi All!
1 Yesterday and this morning, the twice yearly medical check up. Blood tests, physicals and scanning. Had my diet codified and prescribed- continue on with the anti inflammatory diet, more exercise. Will find out if there are metabolic funky business when tests come in.
2) No perfumes or deodorants of ANY kind. But now that I am done with all that, will splash on some Rive D’Ambre to freshen up and start the workday.
Hopefully no metabolic funky business! ????
Freakier than I’d intended to be today in Sous le Vent. I’m afraid I kind of smell like a beautiful animal in heat, and here I am at work…
I wore that one yesterday
Make sure you mark your territory at work ????
Now that *would* be freaky! 😀
Speaking of Lou Reed, his archives are heading to the New York Public Library, which means they will eventually be accessible online, I believe:

Wearing AG Vetiver, my favorite.
Great article, thanks — going to go read in more detail later today. Meanwhile, that sweater vest!!
Ok. Now I want to go dig out my knitting needles!
YESSS! DO IT!
Thanks for the article, really interesting, looking forward to a proper read later!
House twins, it’s a glorious Vetiver.
I love Lou Reed! I betcha my sotd would have suited him, too … vintage Miss Dior. Even though I love it, I do find it kinda freaky. That could be because my dad gifted a bottle of it to me when I was around 12, and I couldn’t imagine wearing it and that lodged in my psyche. Or maybe it actually is a tad freaky? Anyway, it’s such a shame that the reformulation bears no resemblance whatsoever to the vintage. Last night I started thinking about what non-mainstream perfumes currently in production our perfumista community would consider to be classics that are destined to withstand the test of time (disregarding potential IFRA, etc. crapola). Could be a fun community project. 🙂
Great idea, Holly!
We did a similar poll I know, but have to go find it and figure out how similar.
My 95 year old mom died.
She was in hospice care for about 2 weeks and actually in the hospice hospital for 2 days. She peacefully, quietly went to sleep with my sister there.. I was in Detroit giving a presentation. I flew back to lax ( wearing sjp stash) and am now flying to Florida with a bit of box of eels for comfort. I packed roller of dyptique rose for her service. It’s quite warm in Tampa and I thought that would be okay to wear. I can’t believe she gone, such a force of nature she was.
My condolences, apsara. I’m glad she went peacefully, and had your sister at her side. Big hug, take care.
I am so sorry!
I have lost a parent too and make sure you take the time to really grieve
Going peaceful and quiet is a nice way of departing
Take care my dear! Hugs
Oh, I’m so so sorry for your loss! Wishing you all possible comfort and strength in this difficult time. Your mother sounds like an amazing woman.
Super sorry about your mum.
Oh Apsara, I’m so sorry.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Apsara. Wishing peace and comfort for you and your family.

I’m so sorry Apsara, my thoughts are with u at this time.
So sorry for your loss.
*big hug*
So sorry for your loss Aspara. Glad it was peaceful. Hugs to you.
Very sad news Apsara. Sending love to you.
So sorry to hear of your loss, Aspara. Even though you were fortunate to have your mom for such a long life, there is never enough time to share with the ones we love. I hope you are comforted by your memories and you and your family will be in my prayers.
Oh! I’m so sorry, and very thankful that you would share that tender description of your mother’s passing with us.
You smell wonderful.
I am so sorry Aspara. My thoughts and prayers with you and your family. Hugs.
That’s a tough one. So sorry for your loss.
So very sorry for your loss. Take good care.
Sorry to hear about your mom.
So sorry for your loss. I totally understand your force of nature comment…that’s how I felt. Your memories will become sweet comfort I hope.
My thoughts are with you and your family.
I’m very sorry to hear of your loss. Sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Safe travels.
My condolences to you on the loss of your beloved mother. I hope your perfumes bring you comfort as you grieve your parting.
My sympathies on your loss, aspara. Have a safe trip.
My condolences, apsara.
Losing a parent is difficult, even knowing they had long, happy lives.
My Mother was 93, and my Dad was 96.
Remember the good times, I’m sure there are many.
I am so very sorry for your loss. Please take care of yourself.
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your mom. Losing a parent is incredibly difficult, no matter how much time one has had with them. And it sounds like you were close to her. Be gentle with yourself.
So sorry for your loss, apsara. Yours and your sister’s love for her shone through by words and actions.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is hard no matter how long we have them or how quick and easy their passing. You and your family will be in our prayers.
Our hearts ache for you and your sister, Apsara. Hope the two of you can comfort each other in the days ahead…
When I hear “banana cream pie” the first thing that comes to mind is one of my favorite episodes of X-Files – Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose.
Wearing Tom Ford Jonquille de Nuit. I have a bottle of it (it was a gift) but still not sure if I like it.
Ha, I get it. That’s one of my favorite episodes. (Queequeg!) In fact, I just saw it a few weeks ago.
In Jasmin et Cigarette, which goes on a little weirdly but dries down to a very pretty, ever so slightly, savory jasmine.
You smell great!
I love that one!
Yum. I don’t find it weird at all. To me it’s jasmin tea with a side of dried golden tobacco. Mellow.
SOTD and weird(-ish) perfume #4 is Eris “Ma Bete”.
Top: neroli, aldehydes and nutmeg;
Mid: cypriol, styrax and jasmine;
Base: cedar, patchouli and animal notes.
This one is a slight cheat, because I wanted to wear it anyway and would have bludgeoned it into any community project on one pretext or another. But only a slight cheat, because a perfume that is deliberately retro and looking to create an impression of a woman wearing perfumed fur (and not much else) is not going to be very mainstream either.
At the alternative perfumes expo in Paris last June, I spoke to Barbara Herman and tried all 3 of her scents. In the end, lack of cash meant I had to choose between Night Flower and Ma Bete, and I went with Night Flower (which is also wonderful). So for today I have used my Luckyscent sample. Hey, you NST folk in the US who like vintage-smelling stuff and can get hold of Eris so easily, you need to try this! :^D
Ma Bete is my personal favorite of the Eris line.
It demands a lot and it gives a lot. :^)
I got a sample of this one in December, and I think I love it AND I can’t really imagine wearing it! It has a distinctly honeyed-manure thing going on.
We just need to wear it with confidence and a fur coat. ;^)
Great sounding notes. Thanks for the rec!
K, I picked Ma Bete and also wish for Night Flower!
Pulling against the theme in Iris Prima, which has, unfortunately, grown on me. It’s quite ladylike and soft and springlike.
You smell wonderful! Iris Prima really does remind me of the ballet.
I decided to go with one of my “weird” Demeters today, so I layered Dirt and Tomato. Mostly gone now except if I put my nose right up to my arm.
Great combo!
I’m more of a coconut cream pie person than banana, but still, cream pie day! SOTD is Berdoues Assam of India. I am liking this quite a lot. I can see myself wearing it in summer when I don’t want to smell like flowers.
Splitters–everything is in the mail and you should have received your tracking numbers. Thank you all!
Monday May 8 — National Coconut Cream Pie Day 🙂
2nd Sotd:
Just walked into Eau des merveilles Bleue in a store.
Sprayed it on the back of my hand twice.
This might work for me in warmer weather as an office friendly scent.
Usually I am not a fan of aquatic scents, but this one is more salty than calone.
And I am glad to see for once something that’s NOT girly, pink, flowery fruity and/or gourmand in a mainstream perfume store.
Going to give it another try when temperatures rise above 25 degrees (celcius), so probably somewhere in june 🙂 hahaha
Oh, hurray! I’m glad Bleue is making an appearance at last.
Me too…and glad the marine is salty, love that!
It was sunny and like spring this morning, and so I had an irresistible urge to wear L’Temps d’une Fete. Spring in a bottle!,
Sooo good!
Ah, so true – you smell divine!
send some warm sun this way
I went gor comfort again today in Chergui.
Nice! I’m like a 2nd cousin in my Vanilla Flash.
Inspired by Elisa’s choice yesterday, my SOTD is Tauerville Vanilla Flash.
It looks like I’m going to fail on tomorrow’s challenge, as I don’t think I have anything even remotely freaky. It’s pretty funny: only perfumistas could lament not having a weird scent.
I also think it’s funny that we probably find various scents way less odd than a non-perfumista lol. I know there are various scents that I love but can guarantee that most of my friends and family would find completely freaky.
I agree!
Some of my friends would find 31 RC to be weird and awful
Sacrilege! ????
Yep.
Too many meetings and work events for freaky so far this week. I’m saving some Slumberhouse for tomorrow. Today Hendley’s Rosenthal, which gets lots of compliments, especially from North Africans. It smells like home, one woman said to me!
I’ve never heard of the Hendley’s line.
I will take a guess on the Slumberhouse – New Sibet?
Late to the party and I am wearing Theorema.
You smell delightful.
If you’re wearing Theorema you’re allowed to be late.
Oriza L. Legrand Reve d’Ossian from the splitmeet with thanks to Pixel! This is one of my favorites that I’ve tried from the line, up there whether Chypre Mousse and Horizon. The combination of aldehydes with incense really works for me, and I’m easily bothered by aldehydes.
ooh la la I feel like I’d better bust this combo out again, stat!
(but instead I’m trying a sample of Le Sillage Blanc from Dusita, a “modern chypre” that is a bit like a chypre, with something mossy in there, but very airy and green…intriguing and we’ll see how it wears, hoping the leather emerges as promised)
Late to the party here as well–I’m going with Norell New York, because I’m seeing the doctor today, and I need something that speaks with an “inside voice.” Plus, the weather is springlike but not too warm today, so something that smells green and fresh seems right.
Hope the Dr visit went well!
Wearing Dyptyque’s Eau Moheli today hoping the ylang will give me a boost through the workday.
Wearing a large dose of Carnal Flower. Went to Nordstrom’s to try the new LE scents, I liked Whiskey & Cedar and Leather & Artemisia but my husband did not. Will try the tobacco & cardamom one and the hyacinth one next time.
Carnal Flower – nice! I have to re-sniff the LE line; none of them grabbed me the first time around.
SOTD = a sample of MJ’s Myrrh & Tonka, courtesy of a generous NSTer. It’s a “comfort scent par excellence” in my book. Like a warm hug from a friend just when you need it. This might be a very dangerous lemming, too…
I spritzed that one on during a Macy’s drive-by after work last week and it lasted through handwashings, a shower, until the next morning! That was impressive for a JM.
Mmm, you smell great!
I see I am quite behind today!
SOTD = Bvlgari Black
It is a freaky perfume which I will put in the category of Industrial Gourmand: Rubber, exhaust fumes, vanilla cupcake and tea.
I will wear another freaky one tomorrow!
BTW, thanks for the update on ChocolateMarzipan the other night. Good to hear that she’s OK.
I have to reply to her email. I was going to post earlier today but it had been a crazy day!
Say Hi to her from me. I miss her (and the three-eye owl 🙂 )
I just put on a bit of Puredistance White…
Initially when I sampled this, I categorized it as a simple, powdery floral and didn’t think much of it. The remnants clung to my jacket and after a couple days I was racking my brain trying to remember what I wore b/c it smelled so wonderful.
This one is deceptive and winds up being more than the sum of its parts somehow…makes me want to try more of this line…less so though now that I have checked their prices. 😉
The Puredistance line is pretty well done. The first time I wore White to the office, 2 co-workers followed me and kept wanting to sniff me :-). One of them is now in another building and the other one now wears POAL as a signature scent. I got her invited to a Puredistance event in NYC May of last year. I also recommended she visit Aedes where she got POAL. My work is done 🙂
There is a bridge between mainstream perfume and niche/the rabbit hole/other side. Some people stumble upon the bridge on their own, some never find it and others must be gently led. 🙂
