Wednesday scent of the day 3/1

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2017 308 Comments

rabbit

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Adiós, February. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing the (not even slightly freaky) Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle.

Reminder: 3/3 will be Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday — wear your oddest fragrance. Suggested by Monkeytoe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Continuing my mission to try all of my samples at least twice. ELDO Putain des Palaces. The only freak here is the first 5 minutes which on me is verrrrrry B.O. Once I got past that it’s pleasant.

Robin, you smell great. Thanks to Pixel I just got a decant of Dries and it’s lovely.

My little bottle is thanks to Pixel as well, and ack, just realized I never emailed to say thank you — off to do that now, so sorry Pixel! Serious deficit in functioning brain cells here.

Those ELdO names are weirder than the scents itself.

I do like those names though, its creative, and to me its all tongue in cheek, nothing too serious.
But there are only a handful perfumes I like/love from that brand.

I have the big sample set. Havent tried them all to be honest. But my favs so far are Afternoon, Jasmin et cigarette, Fat electrician.

If Afternoon came in a smaller bottle, it would probably part of my collection right now. :)

I got a DVN split, too (thanks, pixel!) and tested it the other night. On me, the drydown smelled dang near identical to Shalimar Souffle. Does anyone else get this?

The wonderfully oddball Bois Farine for me today. Flour, a smattering of cake batter and finishing plaster powder. Bonkers.

Love Bois Farine. I tend to wear it for long car journeys. It’s civilised, so won’t choke the family, but smells particularly gorgeous when warmed by sun coming through a window.

I am wearing Tihota in a slightly different interpretation of freaky – this was the very 1st ( and so far, only 1 of 2) back up bottles I purchased, signifying my movement from someone who just liked to perfume to a certifiable loony perfumista.

Flying the flag high in this vanilla, musky heaven.

Sounds yummy! I’m making a spicy parsnip soup at the moment, there are caraway seeds in it, and the aroma’s are harmonising nicely with Epic woman today, (although I hope I don’t smell too ‘curried’, more ‘aromatic’!

What’s freaky is this weather we’re having. A week ago it was 68 and sunny, today it is 32 and snowing. Last night we had rain and lightening!? Gotta love the Midwest.

I’m wearing Hermes Galop (courtesy of Katrina through the splitmeet) which is about as freaky as I’m willing to get given that I’m spending four hours this morning in a bus with my coworkers. It pairs exceptionally well with snugly sweaters, I think.

SotD: The weird and wonderful Zoologist Bat. This is one of the few scents I feel a little odd about wearing to the office. It very much smells like a zoologist after caring for his bats–kind of fruity, earthy, and with an animal musk that is odd, but not unpleasant (to me since I like healthy animal scents).

Wonderful! So gutsy. I love that you’re wearing that to work! I would love catch a whiff of it without knowing what it is beforehand. With some of the Zoologist perfumes, I have a hard time getting the animal out of my head long enough to know if I actually want to smell like that or not.

Going thru my samples once again. Wearing Nicolai Ambre Cashmere Intense. Citrusy opening with soft amber and vanilla notes in the drydown. There is a faint smokiness accord. I poured the whole sample on me and after 2 hours it is about to disappear. Boring is all I can say. Money saved!

It really is a great name and suits the perfume perfectly. (Have we done that as a community project yet? Your favorite perfume name, or the perfume most aptly named?)

Luckyscent has samples, lizbee. I will be getting another one or two, as I haven’t seen it at the decanters and heaven knows I don’t need a bottle of anything.

SOTD Baruti Nooud…maybe not freaky so some, but the opening reminded me of straight up wood shavings and turpentine. Now, a while later, I’m quite enjoying the whiffs of it I keep catching. That opening was a tad scary for me, though.

I got my Baruti samples from a lot of samples a sweet NSTer sent me! I am enjoying the Nooud now but Melkmeisje was a scrubber for me. I don’t know if it had turned or what but it had a sour smell in the opening I did NOT love! I read good things online about it though, so maybe it was me. So I will have to revisit and see later and also try Indigo.

I’m not too freaky today either. Still in a lovely Salome rut and my decant is just about Kaput! I’d like a full bottle, and its cheaper than my beloved Onda VdE, but I don’t NEED a FB of anything…the eternal struggle between want and need continues at Chez Deva.

I love your Salome rut. I thought I was the only one around here who gets hooked on a single perfume for days at a time. I’m sorry your decant is almost empty. I fully support your FB purchase.

Isn’t it strange? It only happens with certain Perfumes. The mojority of the time I don’t like “left overs” and rarely wear the same scent two days in a row. I have no clue why this is. Any ideas why you go on benders with certain scents? Or do you do this regularly? Have to admit I’m confused by my behavior????

And here I thought I was the only one who thought Salome was “not too freaky!” It’s beautiful, but I see people talking about it like it smells like mating season in the tiger enclosure and I’ve never gotten that at all.

I will let you know. I think you mentioned a possible split recently..? I may yet succumb to the lure of the FB, but I have just been so busy lately, I haven’t really even had time to stay “in tune” with the NST column on a regular basis. I tend to report SOTD and then run, which is very rude of me, but there it is. ????

I’m wearing ELDO original Don’t Get Me Wrong Baby. The whole name that’s on the bottle is on the freaky side, especially in contrast to the mostly lily of the valley pleasant innocent floral.
The bouquet pairs well with rainy, warm March 1st weather- 10+ degrees above average.

Guerlain French Kiss, from splitmeet, courtesy of clarissa.
Raspberry and litchi and musk and powder.
Nice- the only weird thing about it is, reviews have emphasized an overwhelming sweetness. It starts sweet on my skin, but is tart now, a few hours on.
    Triple strength coffee.
Lost 5 pounds in February, so an extra serving of my favorite vegetable broccoli. :)
    Really. :D

        You speak TRUTH, brother!
I was talking with a friend the other day about how, in my experience anyway, in order to lose weight and keep it off, you have to get to a point when you choose the salad over fries not because you HAVE to but because you GET to. Somewhere along the way in the process, it stops feeling like a sacrifice and starts feeling like a privilege. “Lucky me, I have choices, and I enjoy exercising the power to choose!”

SOTD: Adjatay by The Different Co.
This is a delicious tuberose/leather scent. Of course I wish it lasted longer on me, but not terribly bad on longevity.

I see a nap in my near future (lost sleep last night due to root canal recovery) but until then I’m off to get more coffee!

Oh sounds lovely! Mmm tuberose. Need to sample this.

Its so funny (and fascinating), I sometimes crave the smell of jasmine or tuberose, like I crave certain foods (very good chocolate or liquorice or spicy food). Those scents have addictive qualities.

How would you describe longevity of Adjatay?
Less or more than 4 hours?

It’s one of those scents where I keep smelling myself and need to control this in public.
It’s really not bad and I’m dabbing, but spraying, so probably with a couple of sprays you’d get a good word day out of it or maybe just short of a work day.

I’m tempted to get a decant with the STC flash sale!

SOTD and weird perfume #3 is “Burlesque” by Maria Candida Gentile.

    top: blood orange;
    Mid: iris pallida and ros;
    Base: incense and patchouli.

Well, if yesterday’s weird perfume failed as a perfume, today’s fails the ‘weird’ part. On me, this one is perfectly acceptable and only slightly strange. Fragrantica commentators talk of a pronounced civet note, of a similarity to Shalimar or vintage Dana Tabu, or of powder/ lipstick/ make-up notes. Now, if true, that would make this one pure catnip to some NST folk, but it all goes over the top of my head. Sometimes I am a very unworthy perfumista! :^D

I will paw around in samples, but I’m not sure I have anything that could be remotely considered freaky or even odd… a hole in my collection?

I’ll be sampling a couple of Van Cleef scents courtesy of kpaint today, so I expect to smell gorgeously of gardenia and orange and jasmine! Slept badly, so I’m hoping they’ll perk me up.

SotD = L’Eau d’Hiver dabbed from a sample vial on this cold-ish rabbit rabbit rabbit morning. I think Alice’s White Rabbit could wear this one. It feels sparkly and smooth, cool and comfy, a great start for the day. JCE is both maestro and magician. I’ll reapply in the warm afternoon to see how it works then.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, NST. You make the world a better place.

My sinuses were acting up on Mon & Tues, so I didn’t dare try any weird scents, but went for it today. I got three Orto Parisi freebies with a Luckyscent purchase last summer. Two of them – Boccanera and Bergamask – had a strong musky base that was unwearable on me (when I was testing Bergamask my husband walked in the room and asked “What smells like burning rubber?”). Wearing the third – Viride – today and I actually quite like it. Smells like a higher end and more feminine version of one of my favorite cheapies, Salvador Dali Pour Homme. If I ever get through my giant bottle of SD I might replace it with this . . .

I’m working through the Nomenclature sample set. So far the most striking is Efflor_esce, an extremely pretty citrus floral that is also long lasting. You get your money’s worth with this one! Mark Behnke reviewed it here:

    http://colognoisseur.com/new-perfume-review-nomenclature-efflor_esce-chemists-bliss/

I really wanted to love iri-del, but I can’t barely smell it. I must be anosmic to iris aldehyde, which would explain why I find several popular iris fragrances underwhelming, such as FM Iris Poudre and Parfums DelRae Mythique. I have no difficulty at all smelling SL Iris Silver Mist, L’AP Iris Pallida, DSH Scent of Hope, and even Prada Infusion d’Iris.

The one I’m testing this morning is orb-ital, which features Orbitone, and smells like a very, very soft, warm, creamy-musk, sandalwood-ish skin scent to me. None of those nasty spiky notes. To me it doesn’t have much projection.

That leaves the Helvetolide musk scent adr-ett for later today. The violet one, lumen_esce, will remain a mystery until I get a sample.

I tried the violet one recently on paper and I didn’t love it, though it had more oomph than some of the others. I’ve only smelled them in a shop and with all the competing smells, I had a hard time smelling some of them. The orbit-al sounds nice to me and not sure it’s one I tried. I should check that one out.

They are very quiet scents, except for efflor_esce.

This line is highlighting molecules that are generally background or binding elements rather than foreground notes. I’m also finding adr-ett very attractive. I don’t find it “dapper,” but rather a yummy musk. Again, not a lot of projection, though.

Huh. I tried FM Iris Poudre recently and was totally perplexed that it smelled sour on my skin with no hint of iris or powder (same thing each time I wore it, IIRC 3x.) I wonder if I have something similar going on. I do smell iris in the Prada. (haven’t tried the other ones you’ve mentioned.)

I’m sampling SSS Ambre Noir today. It’s really nice. The only thing freaky about it is that I’m having one of those infuriating scent memories where it smells like something–most likely a place or experience, rather than another perfume–but I can’t figure it out. I think it could be the aroma of the commingled contents of a perfume ‘essence’ store in Egypt.

I remembered to say “Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit” today! The only problem was that it was when I only woke up halfway, and I consciously struggled to even mumble it aloud. I may or may not have succeeded before promptly falling back asleep.

Thank you all for the kind comments. Such a wonderful group of people here! I have continued to improve over the day, but my taster and sniffer functions are not quite 100% yet. :-) Spicy creole chicken breast tasted like old toast. Weird…aha, there I got something wrapped to the theme!

Wearing Epic today, I think it qualifies as weird, to my nose anyway, I think it’s the caraway that is very prominent to my nose, which makes it seem such.

Quick PSA – the Eau Protection will be decanted by Friday and the splits to those of you in the US will be mailed on Saturday. Participants from Canada – your splits will be mailed on Saturday as I have to go to the post office :(

Nothing freaky for me in the perfume dept for today or yesterday. I felt the need for a “palate cleanser” of sorts, so SOTD = Atelier Cologne’s Cedrat Enivrant. Goes well with today’s warm, soupy weather. I am actually looking forward to the arrival of a passing cold front later on tonight.

SOTD – Alahine. Something is off about it today – I am not liking it at all :(

Drats! Forgot triple rabbit again. Miss Dior le Parfum for me today. I wore it because I had seen someone on You Tube say they hated it, and I remembered how much I loved it. I even received a compliment:)

Congrats on the compliment. The only reason I remembered the rabbit thing is that ai remembered it yesterday, left a comment about it and went to bed telling myself that I must say it upon waking up.

SOTD is Eau de Gaga which has turned out to be a pretty nice office scent for a hot summer’s day. Enjoying it more than I expected to.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

I missed wearing this last month!

I have at least 2 choices for Freaky Frag Friday, one of which is way more popular than the other.

BTW, not that I’m on a no buy, but I managed not to buy any FB or anything that qualifies for a Donatella confession for TWO WHOLE MONTHS!!! This is as freaky as anything. Of course I am marching to my own rules as to what doesn’t count: Discovery Sets, including the Chanel Les Exclusifs EDP Counter, bottles bought for splitting, splits, partial bottles, travel sprays, decants, samples (the ginormous ones count but I haven’t bought any), scented lotions, etc.

I’ll post this again earlier tomorrow if I can. chocolatemarzipan is doing OK, just hibernating from the constant barrage of social media. She reminded me not to tempt her knowing how naughty I am with these matters. She is enjoying the samples and decants she had received from the generous folks here! P.S. Wait ’til I tell her about the FM Iris hand cream

Oh my gosh, what a busy day at work and an evening started with laundry. But I smelled lovely in Guerlain Attrape Coeur. I have been thinking of buying another decant of it because I only have about 2ml left, and I rarely use it. But wearing it today convinced me that I don’t need any more of it because with the guerlainade it smells like a lot of their other perfumes. So money saved!
