Friday scent of the day 2/24

Posted by Robin on 24 February 2017 318 Comments

Comme des Garçons Spray The Word

Friday always arrives eventually! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Comme des Garçons, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate. If you just don't have time for a five minute meditation, it's the next best thing.

Reminder: 3/3 will be Let Your Freak Frag Fly Friday — wear your oddest fragrance. Suggested by Monkeytoe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wood, wood and wood with a side order of wood, on a wooden plate, on a wooden table with wooden cutlery. In a wood.
    Comme des Garçons Wonderwood.
    It’s a bit woody.

I cannot think of another brand that has so much woody fragrances in their collection.

    Happy Friday!
I was planning to participate in the community project, but when I woke up, I just didn’t feel like digging up my sample of Avignon. It’s the only CdG I have, and it’s not a love. I wanted love, so I went with Cuir de Lancome. Sigh. So pretty.

I have a bunch of samples but the only CdG that’s even fallen into the must-own-or-else category is Carnation, for me the ultimate carnation scent (and I have a lot of them) — fangs bared, claws unsheathed, and on the attack. It may be bolstered by cloves and sweetened by roses but it’s still a big, aggressive carnation and it’s wonderful.

I’m sure you smell grand! I just wish CdG Carnation was the snarling, spitting attack scent on me that she is on you, Pyramus! Either I lose my ability to smell it in about 5 minutes after applying, or my skin eats it, or something…

It’s not a well-known scent but it’s really polarizing! Some people think it’s too tame and sweet, others think it’s too clovey and not realistic. It certainly calms down after a while, but on my skin I get an hour or more of snarling beast and I love it.

Carnation scents are either Big Love or soapy, bitter disasters. Unfortunately for me, the CdG was a disaster on my skin, as terrific as it was on paper, and I bet it’s great on you too.

Yay, but I think avignon or kyoto ‘win’ today.
I like them too, but if I had to choose from that series, Zagorsk it is!
Its somewhat cold and a bit austere, and most of the time I prefer incense somewhat warmer and sweeter. But Zagorsk has a calming effect on me.

      Scent twins!

Daphne definitely takes you on a wild ride, one that could go in a number of different directions.. For me it’s not a disco but an elegant party at Dar Bellarj, the art center in Marrakech. I feel as if I should be wearing red lipstick, a silk shirt, and very expensive shoes. For me, this one needs a very dry climate. With any atmospheric encouragement, it could easily get out of hand.

It’s full of scents I associate with North Africa, bitter orange, jasmine, saffron, incense, oud, but it’s the glowing tuberose that shines through. It’s intoxicating enough that triple strength coffee is a great idea for sobering up.

          I like your description, too.

We all filter sensations though our individual matrix of experiences, taking us to different places. “Diversity in opinion of a work of art shows that the work is new, complex and vital,” said Oscar Wilde, a lover of flowers who probably would have approved of Daphne.

        Hello mayfly!
NdT is not spicy at all on my skin. Daphne dries down to tuberose and wood (internet says oudh, it does not smell of oudh on my skin) after the saffron and frankincense fade.
I have both, but I like tuberose even though it is a ‘difficult’ note to wear unobtrusively.
But I am anything but unobtrusive. 😉 LOL

I waffled between Kyoto and Zagorsk, but suddenly reached for my bottle of CdG Wood Coffee. I have hoarded this long discontinued fragrance like crazy, but allowed myself two big spritzes, and am now basking in its warm, coffee-cardamom-ginger-licorice woodsy glow.

I have moved away from most gourmands in the last few years, but this one still does it for me. I always found it the least sweet of Series 7 Sweet line, and never quite understood why CdG discontinued the series. Gourmands always seem to have an audience, and Wood Coffee is utterly unisex and very wearable. I’m glad to still have a little bit left to enjoy.

Those did fizzle right out. I think it’s true that gourmands always have an audience, but maybe not in the places where CdG sells perfume? At the time, I thought it was an odd choice for them.

But WISH they would do another series. It’s been years!

Wreathed in CdG Leaves : Lily today

Apparently, it has been discontinued, which is a shame as this is quite a nice floral on me.
Auditors have gone, and I am doing absolutely nothing this weekend but a few loads of laundry and cuddling with the doggies.

SOTD is CdG Blue Cedrat. It is a high-tech citrus fragrance. Artistically artificial. Lemon and juniper mixed with metallic notes. Later it gets warmer and spicier, but the metallic notes remain.
    Interesting.

CdG gets no love from me. I was thinking about it this week – why I haven’t even tried any of their offerings – and I think it really comes down to the packaging which I just find so unappealing. Especially those tall black spray can bottles. I know they have some real winners so I need to push through and give them a shot at some point. Sorry CdG.

Yeah. Power outages aren’t that uncommon here, so we have a big generator (12kW) and a whole-house transfer switch, but it’s sucking down propane at a good clip. We’ve got enough propane for another week, but… ugh.

My Indian co-workers find it hilarious that I’ve got the same generator setup as their parents in India. Here on the edge of Silicon Valley.

CdG + Stephen Jones Wisteria Hysteria. Smells very nice on me, but it conks out after a while, at which point I added a rollerball dab of D&G the One, just because it was in my drawer here at work. This seems to have reactivated the Wisteria, and smells very nice indeed now. Who knew?

Sometimes layering fragrances seem to ‘boost’ the power of the first one? Sometimes, for example, I will layer on Lust on top of Chanel Eau Premiere and it gives the EP a big oomph!

Ha ha, I’m wearing CdG LUXE Patchouli (Elisa above is right about the all-caps!) and simply worshiping at the feet of this divine fragrance. It’s definitely not for everyone or not for every day, but it’s a masterpiece of dark sweet maple-y woody patchouli. In a stand-off against my other much-loved patchouli faves–Borneo, Coromandel, and Patchouli Nosy Be–this very well might be the winner. I can’t believe no one else has mentioned it yet. To me it’s the best scent of the whole line!

    Happy Friday!

    1) OMG, you guys, people brought in Friday donuts- in Mardi Gras colors! 😀

    2) SOTD: Story time: So about 10 years ago (holy cow) a new magazine came out- devoted to urban living and aesthetics, making no apologies for loving food, film, the fine arts and music. Although the usual suspects were advertised in the magazine (luxury cars, watches, frelling expensive coats) it was not overly emphasized. Being on the tail end of my twenties, it was a different sort of dream catalog, that did not scream about the latest celebrities, skin tight clothing and 10 ways to lose 10 pounds in 10 days.

That magazine is Monocle*, and they sell their own branded merchandise, including Monocle x CdG Hinoki and Laurel scents. Today, I am wearing Laurel over showering with Laurel soap. What you get a clean, lemony-herbal yet spicy scent. You get a warm woody drydown (because of course this is CdG) The soap is beautiful and perfect to use with a Salux washcloth.

    3) My co-worker got married last night at the courthouse! How exciting! 😀

*I am well aware, more than most, that Monocle has severe editorial weaknesses, and that certain class issues do come into play.

I have no CdG; must remedy that situation.

I received my first STC sample shipment yesterday. I’m so excited! The bulk of it is Serge and Zoologist. thought I’d hit an old and a new house.

SOTD = Mandarine Mandarin. Not sure a this one. Really fresh at first, almost headachy, but an hour later, it’s quite nice. I only applied a few drops. Wow!

I am sad because I dropped my sample vial of Bat from the set onto the tile floor in my bathroom and it smashed to smithereens. Boo-Hoo! I was thinking to myself, “Why couldn’t it have been a different one?” Made my bathroom smell nice for a few days, at least!

Poured the vial of GdC Dot on my arms and neck- the only CdG scent I had. The opening was fantastic- big realistic lemon peel, bright and bitter, and then the juice went into non descript generic territory- fresh, fruity and boring. PASS!
Off to spray, spray, spray Chanel 19 edt, my big love! 🙂

Another Avignon wearer here. I often hear it described as dark, brooding, gothic, cold, etc., which I suspect are people’s Catholic church associations. With none of those myself (aside from the recollection of the smell of various French cathedrals), Avignon to me is warm and comforting and reminiscent of a desert camping trip. A solo, sublime camping trip involving sleeping on sand bars and juniper campfires and scintillating night skies and soft owl calls. It’s great stuff, and I probably need a bottle!

I’m in Nuit Rouge by Antonio Alessandria. I don’t have anymore CDG samples anymore.
Strangely enough I might wear this one for next week’s challenge as well. I don’t have too many freaky scents that I can think of – I’ve gone through all the samples of weird stuff I had last year. But this one I think is a bit quirky with incense, grapefruit, coffee, chocolate. It’s a little bit of everything and the kitchen sink, but still manages to wear very lightly. (I seriously just wrote up what I should write for this next Friday, didn’t I?)

Anyhoo, it’s perfect for today’s incredibly warm nice weather and I tend to want to wear this one when the weather is good.

No CdG in my collection, though there are several that I like but never got around to buying, even as a decant. So I’m wearing Timbuktu today. It’s sort of adjacent in my mind in that I swapped my bottle of Kyoto because the two were similar enough to me that I didn’t feel I needed to own both, and I preferred wearing Timbuktu.

Another Kyoto wearer, here. Last night I went to Fumerie’s swap night and got rid of my CdG original edp, Rose Flash, and something else I can’t remember. I bought the CdG early in perfumistahood, loving the spice notes, but over time I have found other ‘fumes that do spice better, so CdG never got worn. Glad it has found a new home. I came home with a huge bottle of Molinard Ambre and Narciso Rodrigues edp.

    SOTD is CdG “Blue Cedrat”.

Notes are lemon, quinine accord, juniper berries, angelica root, metal rose and cedar. ‘Metal rose’, indeed.

This came free among some samples from one of the German sites (I love when they do that). As far as this one goes, however, I paid nothing for it and Igot my money’s worth. It just doesn’t smell special to me, an inoffensive citrus that smells a bit like screen wipes and lasts about as long.

Today was a sunny day so I goofed off with TOMK and went into Birmingham city centre. Had a great lunch at Damascena (a new Middle Eastern themed place) and bought some artisan bread from a hipster arcade. I know we’re supposed to sneer at hipster culture but really – other than fixed gear bicycles – I can buy into the programme. Good coffee, good food, cutting edge technology for practicality, old school tech for style – what’s not to love? If I were younger, slimmer, less bald, could grow a beard that would stay one colour… but now we’re in a very alternative universe indeed. :^D

Oh, and it looks like the contract in Germany is going ahead, starting 06 or 13 March.

Wafting the green, woody aura of Sugi today. I was looking for my Kyoto sample, which remains unearthed, so this was the one. I’m liking it much more than I thought! Before, it seemed very cold to me, but now it’s warming up a bit more and it’s just lovely. I will have to revisit this line – so many I’ve never sniffed. Maybe it’s because I’m not an incense lover in general.

I don’t own any CdG, but I would like to try a few after reading the comments this week.

SOTD L’Antichambre Le Chocolat – the spicy chocolate reminds me a bit of Chanel Coromandel. A friend gave me a generous decant, and it looks like I will enjoy it til its last drop 🙂

Coromandel is my favourite, so I will have to check this out!

I am also in Ouarazate. It was a tough decision for me as I have the entire CdG Insense Series, plus Hinoki, Blue Encens, Amazing Green, Black Pepper and the two Stephan Jones perfumes.

I don’t have any CDG, the ones I have tried have faded too quickly.
Sampling SSS Rose Volupte, it lasts a long time, I’m really enjoying the creamy sandlewood dry down. It reminds me of a quieter, more sophisticated sister of Calligraphy Rose.
My bottle of Chanel No. 22 edt arrived today, I’m really looking forward to wearing it tomorrow!

Rose Volupte has been on my “to try” list for a long time. You’re making me want it even more now…

SOTD is Wonderwood – haven’t worn any perfume in almost two weeks, and this is the perfect one to get back into perfume after being sick. It is cozy and woody, without any sharpness to irritate my nose 🙂

No CdG here; am in Papillon Salome. It’s so gorgeous, I wish I’d worn it more this winter. I’m in the last of a decant that evaporated quite a bit and I think I only got 2 or 3 wears from it 🙁

I’ve put it on my list to consider for the fall splitmeet.

    YAY Friday!

Wearing CdG Holygrace I got through a swap here at NST! I was surprised that I ended up liking Holygrace more than Holygrapie, but I am happy to have the two to play with. Holygrace is to me an amber that is just a bit weird but totally wearable. Both of them are fun and the packing is so Jun Takahashi (very different from the rest of the CdG line).

No CdG in my rotation either except for “Girl” via Pharrel and CdG collaboration. Just put on a spray of that, so maybe partial points today. Got my hair cut so I had to wait until after my appointment as my stylist doesn’t like alot of perfume. One time I went for a haircut wearing Chanel 19 EDT and I don’t think it was appreciated. PerhapsnI oversprayed.. She said that “that guy sure put on a lot of Cologne” of another patron at the time. I’m not sure if it was him or me (think it was me), but I didn’t want to upset her as I want to keep her as my hair guru.. Also stopped in at Winners afterwards and scored some Korres Jasmine shower gel and lotion travel sets on sale to boot. Good day!

How can she be so persnickety in a workplace that includes
hair dye, permanent waves (maybe obsolete? I am old – LOL), and hairspray?
Sounds very control freaky instead, and complaining about fellow customers to you is not cool.
Not arguing with you Gail, but something doesn’t add up with your stylist.

Oh don’t get me wrong, she’s amazing. I just think she likes more mainstream fragrance. After the Chanel incident, I wore a current L’Air du Temps version and she loved it. It reminded her of her Mom.. I’m not even sure if it was me and Chanel but I didn’t smell another perfume in the room. I possibly didn’t smell what he was wearing and maybe she did.

SotD = Barbara Bui Le Parfum, easy to enjoy.

For some unscientific fun I counted the number (excluding my own) of mentions (but not actual wearings) in today’s SotD post for each of the CdG Incense fragrances:

    Avignon – 12
    Jaisalmer – 1
    Kyoto – 13
    Ouarzazate – 3
    Zagorsk – 8

Kyoto wins by a nose. 😉

Continuing Month of Roses AND participating in the community project —

    SOTD = CdG Red: Carnation

Good while it lasted. 4 spritzes normally last 30 minutes so what was a hajusuuri to do? Spray more! Will h 8 sprays, I got about 5 hours, then it disappeared. After walking 2 miles back to NY Penn in 60+ degree weather, the remnants came out to play again.

Retail Therapy rocks! I was hunting down the Chanel Les Exclusifs wardrobe. It was out of stock at Saks when I was there on Tuesday. I called the Chanel boutique on 57th Street and got redirected to voicemail (no call back – how rude). I went to the boutique and was shocked at the newly mniaturized version of the store! The entrance / exit was single file and I had to wait for a horde of people to come out before I can walk through the door! Alas, it was out of stock. I went to Bergdorfs and none was on display but I asked anyway and sure enough, they had a full cabinet! Instant sale! And I got 3 additional minis AND the SA filled my atomizer with Boy! Wahoo!!!!!!

I mentioned yesterday that I believe I am anosmic to Jasmine and Robin pointed out that it may be the hedione used to mimic jasmine to which I may be anosmic!

I am looking forward to meeting up with Jalapeno. Watch out suburban mall, you are in for a perfumista sniffathon!

I know I’m very late to comment, but I did play along in Ouarzazate. I’ve got to get my bottle out somewhere more obvious so I don’t neglect it so much. I still sometimes wish I had Kyoto instead, but I had to close my eyes and point randomly when I chose my bottle because they were so close in my affections.

I was way too busy at work today to post, and tonight I celebrated 11 years together with my honey, so I’m just now sitting down to relax. I did participate today and wore CdG Champaca EDT, which I love. It’s such a warm, sweet, yellow floral. And tonight I wore Le Labo Rose 31 to dinner to keep up with a rose scent for every day in February.
