Thursday scent of the day 2/16

Posted by Robin on 16 February 2017 252 Comments

LeVar Burton, reading

Happy Almost-Friday! Plus, a very happy birthday to LeVar Burton. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm fighting the February blahs with Eau de Cartier Zeste de Soleil.

Reminder: 2/17 will be Reverse Hemisphere Friday — if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, wear something bright and tropical and happy. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, wear something spicy and warm and comforting.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

And because why not, here's Jimmy Fallon doing the Doors singing Reading Rainbow.

When my grocery store has Pacifica testers out, I like to spritz this one. You smell very pretty!

A little spritz of Tocca Margaux for the morning. After gym and shower, I think I’ll go full tropics in Songes.

Rose Noir AKA POAL Dominique Ropion/Frederic Malle.
    Day two of……….?
I am going to see how many consecutive days I will wear this before I switch.
    Knowing myself, not many.
This is the reasoning why I never got a tattoo, I will want to switch it up, no matter how much I like it.
    Triple strength coffee.
    ;)
    Carpe Diem. Peace.

I love PoaL but I don’t think I’d want to wear it for more than a day… maybe two in a row (though, I wouldn’t want to do it with any other perfume either :) ).
You smell great! (And now I’ll get some coffee)

        Thanks Undina !
Wind chills are in the mid-20s until Saturday, then supposedly going up to the mid-60s. Fingers crossed for moderate temps and my still wearing POAL.
Clink o’ the coffee mug to you!

That sounds great Bear! I wear many fragrances several days in a row, until the weather or an occasion makes me want to change them. I’ve put off trying it because I know know my frugal Scottish heart! I’m going to want to really get some wear out of a frag if I invest a lot into it.
So-What is POAL like to you.? Is it one you wouldn’t want to be without- and why? I’d love your impression if you don’t mind sharing.

        16 February 2017 at 6:33 pm

        Thanks for asking, missyl.
POAL is the patchouli/rose/spice scent I enjoy wearing the most.
Related scents are Voleur de Roses L’Artisan Parfumeur, Lady Vengeance JHAG, and Midnight Poison Christian Dior.
Yesterday it was more patchouli/rose and today it was more sandalwood/rose/patchouli.
I am hoping it is warm as predicted on Saturday, I have never worn it when it is warm outdoors.
        Expensive, but worth it.
        Cheers !

You should. It fit the reverse hemisphere theme. The AA line doesn’t get alot of love, but I think FN is pretty good. I’ve had my bottle for a few years so it’s not quite as sharp in the opening, or maybe I am more comfortable with floral perfumes than I used to be. I can still smell it at five hours out so it works for me.

Happy birthday LeVar Burton! It’s also moving day, which is my least favorite kind of day…especially when not everything is packed yet. Everything’s so dusty and musty that I desperately needed something fresh. Of course, I don’t really have anything fresh, so I borrowed some of my husband’s sample of Olfactive Studio Flashback. Clearly, when this is all over, I’m going to need to add something crisp and refreshing to my collection.

Today I’m on Jacomo Art Collection no 2. My local niche store has maybe 12 bottles in deep discount so I snagged mine for online discount price. Weird and unobtrusive.

They also have 2 bottles of Oeilette Bengale and I’m tempted, though that one is only 30% off.

When I first put it on, I thought, “oh no, what have I done?” Very sweet (and I like sweet sometimes). But now that it’s been a while, it is still sweet, but toned down a bit and more comforting. Not something I’d wear regularly, but every now and then I’m in the mood for a sweet gourmand.

SotEarlyMorning = Chanel No. 5 EdP because “why not?”

I wear No. 5 year-round but most often in the late afternoon or evening, so I’m reversing my day but not my hemisphere.

LeVar Burton (Geordi, where’s your visor?), Reading Rainbow, the Doors, and Jimmy Fallon make quite a culture mash-up. Love it.

Having slept a solid six hours without waking once, I am celebrating by departing from my 15 days in a row of comfort scents for a little experiment. On my right arm is Rahele, and on my left is Dame’s Osmanthus.

Somehow I missed Reading Rainbow for my kids. Word Girl, Clifford, and our family’s much beloved Arthur were staples when the kids were home sick. . .

        Okay. (clears throat) . . .

I applied the perfume about 7 hours ago. The Rahele was a mix of faint apricot and suede/leather–osmanthus, with iris, and a little dry rose, and maybe sandalwood…but the overall feeling was of elegance. The Dame was all bright apricot fruit and leather, and something that made me think of a rope rubbing against wood so fast it starts to smoke but is not yet burning… Since I do not know what Osmanthus smell like in real life, this may have been what I was smelling.

When the Dame Osmanthus calmed down, it was very pretty, but linear… and I still got that bottom note of something a little to hot.

The Rahele lost its hints of apricot slowly, but are gone now. It had some powdery element, and little sparks of herbs and spices in a creamy floral base.

Now, I can still easily smell the Dame, and what is more, the remnants are still pretty similar to the perfume’s launch. But the Rahele? It is faintly there. If I had any more (but I will because of a bet I won I have a 3 ml decant winding its way to me ;-) ) I would reapply it. What I detect with nose pressed to wrist is powder, suede, and sweet flowers.

Happy Thursday to all! Robin, I totally appreciate that video. I’m a huge fan of the Doors going back to the Cretaceous period. Morrison went to school (briefly!) here in town, and when I was in Paris, I did the obligatory visit to his grave (amongst many other literary and musical luminaries!). I have always thought their music was emblematic of that period in history, but has still stood the test of time. Fallon did a great job!

In other news, SOTD is Safran Troublant for its soothing medatative qualities while having taxes done this morning. I’m getting a return, so a big Thank You to Uncle Sam for deeming me worthy enough to get some of my hard earned income back!

The burger kick continues! Just wolfed down a wonderful Angus burger smothered in melted smoked Gouda, embraced by a deep red beefsteak tomato, nestled in two fistfuls of mixed greens and kissed by spicy mustard and ketchup on a whole wheat sandwich round. I’m full, but glutonously wishing I could manage a second one.

Beautiful day in the swamp and I hope everyone is enjoying Almost Friday Day????

Nice perfume, Robin. It’s a Northern Hemisphere morning: dark, cloudy and cold so I might wear Myrrh and Tonka or one of the six samples that came with it….thank you JM. Glum today as I am going to the Murder House. Not only do I have a fractured tooth but the dentist suggested scaling and that is one thing I hate. That hideous scraping noise and the irritation when that proddy scraper thing digs into your gums…. And no, the tatty poster of dolphins taped to the ceiling above my head does not take me to a happy place. What do dolphine know about teeth scaling? Also, will have that annual nagging question: should I get my nose pierced while half my face is numb from the anaesthetic? Gonna wear Poison Girl. Two can play at the pain game.

Oh Kanuka! I empathize with your dental dilemma! If it makes you feel any better, every time I go to the dentist, my eyes start to spontaneously leak. This is very disconcerting for my long suffering dentist, and completely humiliating for me. In an effort to make me feel better, she told me that sometimes the novacaine causes people to have “unusual emotional and physical responses.” Wasn’t that nice of her? Deep down, I know I’m just a dental sissy and I probably should just accept my 2 year old crybaby inner child. I’m quite sure you are much more brave and stoic. Sending you dental hugs????

Kanuka, your creative thinking has me giggling, I never would have thought to have something pierced while numb from dental lidocaine…I did my earlobes at 15 with a needle and an ice cube. LOL @ “Two can play at the pain game.” And tatty dolphins on the ceiling do not help! My routine at the dentist is to curl up in a blanket, ask for the remote and headphones and watch tv during any & all procedures. Gas is available, and drugs if I make arrangements in advance. She is more expensive than most dentists and I always suspect I’m subsidizing her fancy office, but it’s worth it.

Because the crowd wants blood, errr comparison, I am wearing Do Son EDT and EDP today. ;)

The EDT is greener w/ more citrus and a bit sharp. The EDP is more floral and spicy/woody without the sharpness. In the early stages, I am enjoying the EDP more when directly compared.

I shall report back more later from the field…2nd cup of coffee is brewing and…ready!

The differences become less apparent a couple hours into each perfume and they became hard to distinguish from one another. And about 4 to 5 hours in, they are both almost gone with the wind…

Feeling summer-y in Cologne Indelebile (but it actually IS pretty summer-y where I am in the northern hemisphere). This remind me a lot of something – maybe Acqua di Parma with less citrus and more flowers? It gets compared to Neroli Portofino quite a bit, but I find NP to be much sweeter.

Yes – for science! Anyway, I’m six hours in and I still get a trace if I sniff my arm, but the scent is pretty much gone – it became a skin scent at about hour four. To be fair, I only spritzed an edt amount, not a cologne amount – I could see a generous application of this lasting all day.

This is a VERY nice cologne, maybe my favorite (I would have to do some direct comparisons). But I don’t see myself paying Malle prices for a bottle of cologne . . .

Still (!) getting through my Penhaligon’s Bluebell, which may well be my last bottle given I don’t care for the direction in which the company seems to be going – I tend to overspray for my weekly volunteer sting at a local charity shop as you sometimes get an unpleasant surprise when you open/sort a bag of donated clothes & it’s always nice to be able to have a quick wrist sniff of something pleasant! Thank you to everyone who wished me well last week when I had a mini rant about a particularly hard-to-budge head cold I had acquired. All set for my visit to my brother on Sunday – I leave Aberdeen, Scotland at 5:20am (aka stupid o’clock) & arrive in Tampa at 6pm local time – that will be a challenge…I have elected to take my Hampton Sun ‘Privet Bloom’ with me, which the company very kindly sent (with no delivery charge) from their head office in NYC to friends in Seattle we were visiting at the time. It’s a smaller bottle than the one I bought for the first time in Glasgow, so I anticipate using a lot of it, thus giving me the option sooner than I had thought of opening my more recently purchased Martin Margiela, which then gives me the option of buying something else entirely sooner than I had anticipated – oh good!

RR is one of the things in this world that should be required to keep going forever. There are several specific episodes that I still remember, all these years later (e.g. the one on the ST:TNG set with Michael Dorn in his Worf costume: “Stand aside! I take large steps!”). And all of those memories are tied to the love of books–awesome!

In Carnal Flower. Super spring-y here today. It snowed last Sun-Mon which killed all of my potted herbs, but this morning there was a big cluster of new chive shoots that are already 6″ tall! I remember being amazed by my chives thriving this time last year. If you’d like another harbinger of spring alongside your crocuses and daffodils, plant some chives!

Great way to celebrate LeVar Burton’s birthday – watch the 2016 “remake” of Roots, which he produced for the History Channel. It has a great cast and is extremely well done (though it can be difficult to watch.) It seemed to be off the radar when it came out last year but I happened to catch it and would highly recommend. http://roots.history.com/about

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, and the cashier said ” I love your perfume, what is it” of course, I was super happy(and a little surprised) “I’m wearing Angel” I said. Then she responded “oh, I will check it out next time I’m at Victoria’s Secret” lol, for a second I was really confused! Once I figured it out, I just said “you should do that”

I don’t know why you were surprised, my old college roomie has been wearing Angel since it came out and I’ve always loved the way it smells. She must use a light hand because I just get light wafts of vanilla. I think it’s people who’ve overdone it who’ve given it the bad rap.

SOTD = Jo Malone Red Roses

4 spritzes and it is still chugging along for a good 8 hours.

plyushka – I have not yet worn the JM samples I got from Macys yesterday. I have really high hopes for them and will not be too bothered if they don’t last long. Chanel No. 5 EDT (2-3 spritzes) lasts 2 hours, 4 spritzes of CdG barely 30 minutes and I enjoy them both!
