Wednesday scent of the day 1/25

Posted by Robin on 25 January 2017 270 Comments

Virginia Woolf

Hump Day, plus Virginia Woolf's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I cannot find my sample of Jardins d’Écrivains Orlando, but as there are flowers (roses, carnations, hyacinths, you name it) sprinkled all throughout Mrs. Dalloway, (and for that matter, To The Lighthouse) I went with Lorenzo Villoresi's lovely Donna, which I have not worn in an age.

Reminder: 1/27 will be Sci-Fi Friday — wear a fragrance that transports you to some alternative futuristic scenario, or that matches a favorite Sci-Fi novel or movie. Suggested by Solanace, who mentioned Strange Invisible Perfumes Fire and Cream as a cologne a cyborg might enjoy wearing.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Oh, Virginia! I’ve just recently reread Orlando and enjoyed it very much, again.

I’m wearing Iris Silver Mist in the honour of Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. I think iris can be a good match for SF in general and ISM is the purest, most abstract of them. Ninefox Gambit is one of the most math-based SF novels I’ve ever read and requires some advanced abstract thinking, so I thought ISM would be fitting.

I also just wanted to recommend Ninefox Gambit to all Science Fiction readers here. A lot of the world building and techy details go over my head, but it doesn’t really bother me, as it’s a devious, epic political/military space adventure with some truly great concepts and wonderful characters. If you like Banks or Leckie or Rajaniemi (or even Asimov’s Foundation series) you might enjoy this. The body count is very high, though, so be warned.

You smell great. I am a big Star Trek fan, but the rest of my family are major sci fi readers. I haven’t seen Ninefox Gambit, but will be sure to
recommend it to them. The ISM /SF match makes a lot of sense!

It is pretty challenging, so I’m careful with recommending it to novices, but for anyone used to SF, absolutely. Not that non-SF readers cannot handle challenging texts, but books like this tend to require a certain level of comfortability with the genre to be fully enjoyed. In any case, I found it very rewarding.

ISM is a perfect choice for SciFi week. It’s the one I thought of right away – somehow spacey and earthy at the same time. I think it’s what I’ll wear on Friday

Not much of a sci fi fan, but love Orlando, have u seen the film with Tilda Swinton?, I would love to re watch that, I saw it as a teen in the early 90’s, before I’d read any V. W, and it had such an impact on me that afterwards I read quite a few of her novels back to back. I can imagine V. W in Iris silver mist too!

It’s not the same of course, but I have read every single Banks SF novel, so I hope our tastes overlap at least to a certain extent. And if you haven’t read it yet, Ann Leckie’s Radch trilogy is great as well.

Joining you on triple strength coffee today, Bear!

Tossed & turned all night as I was worried I’d mess up the scheduled 8am birthday conference call to mom (70th!) with all our family.
It went off without a hitch, except for Dad’s senior moment when he did not know how to put the iphone on speaker and had to call back with land line phone.

Finally, a sunny and beautiful day. SOTD Jo Malone Dark Amber and Ginger Lily. Cardamom, amber, ginger. Very nice. I like the creamy aspect of it. Unfortunately, the sillage is very poor and after two hours it is almost gone. I was having more expectations, but it did not make any great impression on me. Money saved!

This is such a sandalwood scent on me! It is creamy, wood pudding maybe? I have no issues with staying power unlike you.

Speaking of staying power for the JM’s, I sprayed some of her new Myrrh & Tonka on a blotter Monday and it has smelled up my coat pocket! It’s really strong, and quite lovely too.

Most of the Malone’s disappear quickly on me. I have not tried Myrrh and Tonka yet, but I am glad to hear it has a stronger sillage. I have a sample, so I might be luckier with that one.

Lovely scent! Poor projection, which is fine with JM; Dark amber seems to last on me all day (but then again I wear a body cream which may help in staying power.)

The lotions make a big difference when you wear them together with the colognes. Mimosa and Cardamom is a good example. However, Pomegranate Noir is strong enough and has a good longevity without the lotion.

Layering Citrus Man by Dame with Gingerade essential oil\
    I smell like a 7 and 7

My very first drink I had with my father was that. I remember it well, I had just turned 21, was home on college break, he had to go to the VA hospital for a check up and turned to me and said “I have to buy you a drink” and preceded to take me into this dive bar near the hospital. I was the youngest one there, I felt like I was surrounded by veterans of his age, sporting their baseball caps with all sorts of pin from war and what not. The drink was good but strong. Its nice to remember the good times

Possibly, although in her diary she complains about K. Mansfield’s perfume! “she stinks like a ____well civet cat that had taken to street walking”

      So maybe, maybe not!

To The Lighthouse is the one I re-read most often, followed by Mrs. Dalloway. I will admit I tried to re-read The Years recently and just couldn’t.

I have read all her fiction and most of her non-fiction, and most of the major biographies. Some of the books I’m sure I have read 10 times over, and most I have read at least twice, but The Years and Flush — so far, one reading.

Because of the way my books are organized alphabetically, W is actually on a shelf just above my computer, so I can glance up and see all of Wodehouse and the various Wolfe / Wolff / Woolf books, and on the shelf just above that, all of the Waugh & Welty & Wharton. It’s very comforting even if some of them I will never read again. Marie Kondo does not understand.

Ede97005, we’ve had a couple of Kondo debates here, most recently in the comments to 5 vetiver perfumes for winter. So the issue of the proper sort of relationship one should have with their belongings has been on my mind lately.

Today is one of those odd days. Shortly after getting to work we had a power outage and over half the office left to WFH while us stragglers waited it out. The power is back on, but I’ve already cancelled a lot of stuff for today.

Woke up extra early and enjoyed puppy-coddles and some music from Dessa before starting my day.

Today is #Let’sTalk day in Canada – sponsored by one of our major telecom companies, it is a day when Canadians are encouraged to discuss mental health issues. Every time the hashtag #Let’sTalk is used, a donation is made by Bell to support strong mental health.

As a someone who has struggled with clinical depression her entire life, I take every opportunity to try and remove some of the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Wearing the amazing Zelda by En Voyage – Zelda Fitzgerald struggled with mental illness herself.
I may not be perfect, but I can smell as if I am.

Have a great day, and if you, or someone you love is struggling, then #Let’sTalk

Cozy is the right word for Homme. To my nose it opens with a bit of sharpness, maybe the patchouli or something in the amber, but once it settles down it’s heaven.

Saw your comment below about the never-ending crud. My family has been fighting a virus with cough/congestion for two weeks, so “long-lasting” seems to be a theme this winter. Take good care and get well soon. And enjoy the new carpet! ;)

I love Dior Homme, you smell great. As for Marie Kondo, I refuse to get rid of books, they are part of my decoration scheme. I have beautiful built-in oak shelves, if I got rid of all the books I will not likely read again I would have empty shelves, which I find unesthetic.

Happy to hear that some of you are seeing sunshine again. I’m on Day Four of the sinus crud, and Day Two of the big carpet replacement project. They’ll be finished with the carpeting today – hallelujah – but I suspect the crud will linger longer. Wearing Natori, which I’m trying after several of you talked it up. It’s very nice (when I can smell it, which isn’t the case right now), and Mr. G is quite fond of it already, so I might have to track down a FB.

I finished off 5 days of prednisone a couple of days ago but it’s only gotten worse, and have had vertigo since last night. Ugh. Happy hump day!

    1) So the insurance adjuster came to the house yesterday and inspected the damage. Goodness, it was more than even I estimated. I got a check, and together with my deductible the damage to the interior will be fixed. Since part of the scope of work includes pulling up the upstairs caroet I am considering just replacing the carpet at the same time.I have planned on doing this NEXT year- maid, c’est la vie.

    2) Am in Jo Malone’s Tuberose and Angelica. No sci fi connections today- it’s too florally sweet, almost Victorian!

Hi She-ra, you made a comment the other day about the new formulations of the exclusifs. Yesterday I tried the new EDP against the old EDT of No 22. and also compared to the parfum (I have of 22 from the 90’s) (pre-reformation). The “voluptuousness” is not there in the new formulation, its wears a bit sheer on me but I am also dabbing. I didn’t feel like it was a total flop and enjoyed it.
I just thought I would share with you since you mentioned they butchered 31RC.
I have to go back and return something at the chanel counter today, maybe I will give 31 RC a try or others. I can report back to you if you want but I am no expert!

I’ve debated buying an old set on Ebay. I shall have to compare the 22 EDT and EDP as well. I think people have liked CdR EDP and think it is as good and even an improvement to the EDT. I am curious about La Pausa in the EDP too. I sniffed it but haven’t properly sampled it yet. The EDT is lovely but so very fleeting.

I sampled 31 RC on the skin, I don’t think the dry down is too bad, the opening is much different .
Cuir de R, was very nice but I have no comparison.
What I liked in the EDP that I didn’t like in the EDT was the Gardenia.
Boos de Isles on paper did not smell the same too me, I was very sad, but will have to test on the skin
Love how I went to return something, only to buy, another lipgloss. ????

Good to know….I shall have to revisit 31 RC EDP and give it another whirl.

Don’t feel bad about the lipgloss. High-end lipsticks and lipglosses are some of the only things we have to push us through these dark news times.

Let me know if you need more of the EDTs please. I have big bottles of 31 RC, Coromandel, Box of Eels and 1932 in the EDTs and would be happy to send you some of any or all if your coffers are running low. Seems like we will need lots of lipstick and perfume for the foreseeable future. ;)

I was in the mood for citrus, so I went with Calyx. This was a favorite of mine in high school, and I bought a decant last fall, thinking it would be fun to try it again. However, it mainly brings me back to getting ready for school very early in the morning during the cold MN winters in my parents’ under heated house. Proustian in a bad way, I guess.

I still think it’s a lovely and unique scent, but I’m not sure if I enjoy it anymore. I do still enjoy wearing my other high school favorite, Aromatics Elixir, which doesn’t bring back these memories at all. Our brains are so strange . . .

I have very strong memories of the same (not the perfume, but the underheated house. And then going to a freezing cold underheated school.) Winter is so much more tolerable when it’s at least warm INside.

At least my school was warm! But my parents’ house . . . There was no reason for it – my mother is just one of those people who think turning the thermostat higher than 60 degrees is too self-indulgent.

I’m sampling Zoologist Panda today. I liked the earlier stages, but so far I’m not really loving the drydown. It started out really nice and grassy and green (if maybe *slightly* air-freshener-ish), and now it’s kind of laundry detergent. At least it’s just a sample. I gave the others a little sniff last night, and so far, I think I like Rhinoceros, Civet and Bat the most, but we’ll see how I feel when I give them a full wearing.

I tried Civet first. I really liked it. A very comfortable scent in my view and I received compliments from everyone around me ( unsolicited!)
It had good longevity and was surprisingly fun to wear. I really wasn’t sure a perfume named ‘Civet’ could work but it does!! I want a larger decant sample. I think it is perfect for cooler weather but am anxious to take it South for a test drive in March.

Late to NST today! This is my happy place on the Internet! :)

SOTD: Beautiful. I got a mini sample at Christmas, and it smells so different than how I remember it back in the 90’s…..Anyone know if it was reformulated since then?

Maybe it’s just my nose overwhelmed with perfume memories? LOL!

Wow, that is pathetic. I get at least 4 hours and longer on my clothes. My bottle is from Luckyscent, no affiliation, and was MUCH stronger than the dabber sample that I tested prior to purchase. I actually had to let my bottle sit for a year before I could wear it. It was just too strong at first.

“You always told me to stay off the freeway.”
    “Here, take a cookie…”

SOTD = Bvlgari Black = The Matrix trilogy.

It’s a reboot of my choice for the ‘At the Movies’ project. As I said then: Leather for all the (p)leather clothes, rubber for the epic car/motorcycle/semi chase (and that awesome entry Trinity has at the power plant) in ‘Reloaded’, lapsang souchong tea for all the kung fu, and vanilla for the Oracle’s cookies! Moreover, the whole modern, urban feel Black is meant to evoke perfectly fits the aesthetic inside the Matrix.

    Happy Hump Day, NST!

Havana Vanille today (I can never remember what L’artisan re-named it, which makes me wonder why they got rid of a perfectly memorable name in favor of one that isn’t). Nom, nom, nom. My favorite kind of vanilla: lush, boozy, little bit smoky. And I can smell it through the sinus congestion I’m trying to fight off (TMI?).

I wanted something light and pretty today so I’m wearing Amyris Femme. Yesterday was a ski day and it was gorgeous-not too cold or windy, sun all day. I wore sunscreen but still have a pink streak across my nose and cheekbones.

I got home late last night so didn’t comment in yesterday’s thread, but I thought I would say here (re: the freebiemeet) that it does get expensive sending multiple packages. It makes me feel good to send things to regular posters, who have become “perfume friends” through NST, but to send something to someone who pops up only to claim a freebie and then is never heard from again bugs me, so I stopped participating in freebiemeet a while ago. I don’t have an answer other than to continue to offer free stuff privately or in a regular post if there is something I want to give away.

Agree with all of this and it seems an easy fix is to change it up so people feel comfortable asking that shipping charges are covered by the recipient. Just a slight shift in the rules that participants will need a paypal address and to pay for shipping, or something along those lines?

Ended up in Teo Cabanel Barkhane yesterday, which is gorgeous. It’s a smooth and creamy lightly soft amber with hints of tobacco and leather, which doesn’t quite seem to match the notes or description. Tested Amouage Sunshine Man this morning, which is indeed sunny and fun, and now wearing a smear of Givenchy Organza Indecence, the last of a small decant which had converted to oil while sitting unattended for over a year. I’m not sure if it’s because of that or because my sweet tolerance has expanded exponentially in the past year that it smells totally different than I recall. Anyway, it’s about gone and not sure what I’ll put on next. I wouldn’t mind some more Sunshine Man, but was also eyeing Alaia earlier.

    Late to the party!

    SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage

I know we’re not supposed to hoard but this is one where I am carefully doling out because it is limited edition from 2012. I have two 7 mL travel sprays, one for participating in the Kickstarter campaign and the other one from last year’s reverse swap.

You can read the backstory from Robin’s review. I wore this today because it is superb, the weather is cold enough to support the patchouli, amber, cacao and birch tar while allowing body heat to make it bloom without overwhelming and i have to use it before it eventually dries up.

Cacao, patchouli, birch tar, and iris – sounds like a hajusuuri scent to me. :) Thank you for mentioning Robin’s review. I love to wander the NST archives, and I was tickled that she mentioned Dior Homme, my sotd, in the review.

I actually don’t get Iris nor the Vetiver! It is also not sweet. YMMV :-)

        And you smell wonderful!

Although I usually have a hard time with birch tar, You make it sound lovely. Might as well enjoy it and maybe Andy will bring it back someday. Wouldn’t that be nice if you’re reading this Mr. Tauer? ????
