Thursday scent of the day 1/19

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2017 224 Comments

Janis Joplin

Hey, it's Almost-Friday! Plus, Popcorn Day and Janis Joplin's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Annick Goutal Mandragore.

Reminder: on 1/20, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

and yesterday made me realize that SDV and EdM are similar enough that I could go with a full bottle of the latter and be satisfied if I ever needed a full bottle because the price is right (that is for you, hajusuuri!!!)

Aha. I thought Eau des Merveilles and I couldn’t see any similarity! Yes, I have Eau des Missions and agree. (I just think of it as Le Couvent – Missions.)

Layering Cristalle au Vert with Shalimar

Going to check out some of those Chanel crayon lipsticks and do some sniffing around Bergdorf’s, and then meeting up with a friend at Maison Kayser for something sweet. Another vacation day.

Was wondering if anyone has every tried the Dame soliflore collection?

      Happy Belated to Buddha :)

I have tried the originals of the soliflore collection…Mimosa, Gardenia, Tuberose,Osmanthus, Rose, Narcissus, etc….I think he added a few more after those…I got the travel sprays and loved them …I thought they were well done and the price is right….used about half of the decants of each and then passed them on to my mother so she could enjoy them too….

and I am hoping mals will chime in cause I know she likes this one but the Narcissus is a knock out :) I wore it to work once and everyone was commenting and asking “what’s that smell?” on of the gardeners in the bunch said “it smells like jonquils”….

I’ve tried several and they all seemed very true-to-the-flower. I did detect the “blue cheese” note in the Gardenia that rather put me off it, but I’m not a huge gardenia fan to begin with. And the Mimosa has, for me, a very jarring opening, but then settles into loveliness after a few minutes.

I’ve also sampled the first batch of Dame soliflores. They are all very nice and are surprisingly realistic. My favorite is the gardenia, which is the most true gardenia scent I’ve encountered, but the mimosa, narcissus, and osmanthus are really nice too.

Ooh let us know what u think of the Chanel crayons, they look gorgeous, I love the look of the rose one, however they are a pretty small amount compared to other Chanel lip products, tempting tho!
I bought the Rouge Allure gloss in super nude, a couple of weeks ago, it’s a lovely formula.

SOTD is Robert Piguet Fracas. It is not a typical winter fragrance, but I think it is an excellent cold weather scent. No sun appeared today (the weather is a bit depressing), and after all that leather, tobacco and resins I wore on three previous days I want flowers. Fracas is a real tuberose bomb, a loud and sunny scent.

Way off– Journey Woman is a smooth osmanthus leather on me while Golden Acacia is rougher and comes across as a pollen hazed honey with sunshine and dirtiness and maybe some outdoor sex thrown in

    Janis Joplin – timeless.

Out for coffee after an appointment- Rwanda Kivu Lake pour over. The dark roast with a hint of chocolate is a good accompaniment to POAL body butter, which I find very safe to wear out of the house.
There were compliments and even mini reviews from people about the subtle but intriguing scent.

Yay! Way back when I first tried Chergui (barely 2 sprays from a sample aromizer), I did not like it – it smelled like bug spray! I don’t even recall how I ended up spraying more and it was as if the clouds parted and the angels sang hallelujah!

My sensitivity is more related to sweet vs non sweet. There are days when I’m suddenly repulsed/nauseated by sweet scents and then days I crave them…
Enjoy your walk! I’m on the UES so might take a short hike to the park, myself.

Morning, good morning. I slept very late this morning (excellent!) and when I staggered out at six to make tea, both cats were sitting by the food bowls, glaring and saying, “Empty! And what time do you call this, missy?” Isabella was about to phone the Feline Union to demand collective action, and Jack was organising his knitted mice into a full on frontal attack. And.–this is the worst bit– we have NO Temptations in the house. Oh dear. Somehow we can’t manage cat contentment without six Temptations each as a little post-prandial treat. I hope this domestic crisis isn’t an omen for the day! Anyhow, I have sweetened the moment and strengthened my backbone with a generous application of 31 Rue Cambon. Some days, you just have to go for the biggest guns there are, and 31 RC is my ultimate weapon and defence. BTW, Isabella has gone off in an elegant harruffle, but Dakkie’ has now come by and given me a surreptitious smooch. Phew!

Oh dear, no Temptations. You’ll be lucky if they don’t express their discontent in any sort of possession-destroying way…

I miss having a cat. Silvia the Pink-Nosed Underfoot lived for 20 years with us, but since my youngest is mildly allergic (the cat predated the kid), we decided that when she passed on we would not get another cat until Taz had moved out of the house.

I had such a happy evening watching a documentary about the architect John Lautner ( I could live in all of his houses ) and reading Alan Cumming’s You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams…just me on the couch with the dogs, a plate of (terrible NZ ) cheese and crackers and a couple of glasses of wine. Has anyone ever tried the Cumming scents? They sound good – peaty, boozy and sweaty? There is a great chapter in the book about Gore Vidal and the absence of joy . The tone is much chattier than his previous memoir ( about his violent father ) but it isn’t gossipy. Anyway, think I will wear an amber scent today as it is cold ….Ambre des Merveilles? Washing sheets and towels and back to work. Hurray!

Don’t forget the yoghurt. And, also Austrian lamb because NZ lamb is far too strong…and then there’s the fish, also better in Austria …. this pretty much sums up the opening response to every meal we placed in front of them. I became completely mesmerised by their comments, anticipating what would come next. At one point I had to fill the car up with petrol and the guy jumped out of the front as I screwed back the cap. I thought, that’s nice, he’s going to offer to contribute (I used about $60 driving them places) but no, it was simply to check the price of petrol in NZ to see if it was more expensive than Austria. It was bizarrely entertaining

Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela, which I bought blind because I’m not smart and there was a deal at Twisted Lily where you got a discovery set along with a full bottle. If I’d gotten the set first, I probably would have chosen Jimmy (which is now discontinued for some reason) or Montserrat, but Au Dela has really grown on me. But popcorn is healthy in large quantities, isn’t it? I mean, it’s not even food…just a way of connecting people via a cardboard bucket.

Wearing Musc Ravageur today. It’s yummy, and I can’t believe I’d gone all winter so far without wearing it.

I’m going through my Zoologist samples and wearing Civet today. I love it! oooh! I thought it would be much weirder than it is. I also really like Bat but it just doesn’t seem to last on me for some reason, which is disappointing. But the Civet lasts and seems very sort of warm and golden.

Yet another gray morning had me reach for L’Heure Bleue. No complaints. Bu now, lo and behold… what is that? The sun? In January? In Cleveland?? Takes something away from LHB’s moodiness, but I’m enjoying nonetheless.

Have any of you have hit a perfume plateau- where you couldn’t find anything new you could successfully wear?
I’m feeling cranky. Maybe it’s the grey weather, and the fact that I’m trying to lose 10 lbs is not helping! :)
I had such high hopes for my new batch of samples.
I tested some SSS and DSH, some Atilier, and a bunch of Amber samples rec. from STC.
DSH American rose is pretty- but not wow on me.
Vanille EDPis ok.- kind of perfumey too.
Piment du Chocolate was WAY too baroque on me- I struggled to not wash it off after just 10 minutes. I stuck it out- pretty but too much money for ok. It was like a PDN scent- beautiful and really big.
I expected to looooove Souviner de Maimaison after Jessica’s review here. I like the spicy note in L’air du Temps so I thought it was a sure thing.
It was pretty near the end but way too perfumery near the front -and only ok at the end., after waiting out all the rest…To paraphrase someone ‘ that’s no way to wear and enjoy perfume.’ :(
I’m beginning to worry I’m not going to find anything else I can wear.
I guess I like the ‘idea’ of cedar, incense and Amber -but not most fragrances including them. I couldn’t wear any of the SSS frag ( with the exception of the rose – it was ok).
All of the Altilier’s I tried were awful on my skin or disappeared.
I haven’t been able to wear anything past three tries lately!
I can wear Hermes Le Ambre Des Merivilles ( in the cold), Guerlain Terracotta, Estee Tuberose Gardenia, Stella and SL Santal Majuscule.
I should just enjoy the ones I have and stop trying to find another for a time?
:( thanks for letting me vent!

I have been having a similarly low batting average with samples, which is why I’ve decided to stop buying them and just wear my loved full bottles.

I sympathize and have had similar experiences lately. For me, I think I’ve realized that I have more than I need already and a new scent would really have to wow me before I’d buy. Let’s face it, I probably already own something sort of similar. Also, we’re probably also learning what we really like from past mistakes and becoming more discerning.

There are times when i smell a perfume, and it’s instant love. Other times I can smell the exact perfume, and think, what was I thinking? For me, perfume can be very emotional and mood driven. I know the frustration of craving a new scent, and not finding one that fits. I think that’s the time to step back and get reacquainted with what you already love. The new ones will come when it’s their turn.

I just had to come back to say, that was a little deep for the grown woman that wore Bon Bon today. Lol. Sometimes it’s just comes down to what you’re in the mood for.

Late to post, but I waited to try on today’s kerosene tin experiment until post-gym etc.
Yesterday’s Blackmail again had great lasting power, and not too much “oud-y” synthetics popping up.
Today’s Broken Theories is a nice smoky tobacco, smooth and comforting, and would get along with any fan of Chergui/tabac aurea. Doesn’t smell just like them, mind you, but similarly agreeable.
