Tuesday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2017 412 Comments

Malmaison teapot

It's Tuesday, and it's apparently already Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day. That was fast, wasn't it? And a quick PSA: the freebiemeet is coming up on Saturday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Souvenir de Malmaison. Tea at the moment is a lovely winter pluck Alishan oolong from Tea Trekker.

Reminder: on 1/20, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the silverplate Malmaison teapot by Christofle ("Malmaison is decorated with a frieze of palmettes, the symbol of one of the greatest styles in French decorative art: the Empire style. This ornamentation is applied with a special technique that makes this frieze look like it was done in relief.") is $2,200 at Geary's.

Its good thing I live in a small NYC apartment or else I would have a teapot collection. Love this one Robin!

Grandpa (to my babies) is visiting so I am enjoying a cup of his homemade chai tea in peace and quiet. Meeting a girlfriend for something sweet this morning at Dominique Ansel’s bakery in SoHo. Today is a vacation day for me. I may even have time before running off to do some much needed meditation.
    Have a fragrant day!

I do not want a silver teapot unless I have staff to polish it, but it is a pretty pot! Do enjoy your peace and quiet, and hope you’ll get to meditate.

Yes…. My sisters and I had to polish silver when we were kids. I despise the tines of silver forks, and nobody should ever care if they are less than polished. 😉 I love china and crystal to distraction. A person can never have enough crystal vases. However, I am sticking with my fav “fancy” SS flatware forever.

That is a nice teapot. I’d love to be home drinking tea made from that teapot right now, but I’m in the office instead. It’s always so hard to drag one’s self out when it’s cold and rainy.
I’m in Dior Homme today and drinking Twinings Irish Breakfast.

It is gross out. I finally broke down and bought a “happy light” this year, and am shocked at how much it is helping. It would help more to move out west but this was cheaper.

Glad to hear the happy light is helping. SAD is no joke. My sister moved to Scotland and lives by hers, where daylight is nearly non-existent in winter between the short daylight hours and overcast skies.

I was sighing as I looked at the forecast for my parents in Florida this week. A happy light is cheaper, but nothing can really beat nice warm, sunny weather.

Scotland would be hard for me! I do not really have SAD, I just hate winter, and I find that I get less done, especially in the afternoons when I tend to drag and want more caffeine. The light does not make me any happier, but it does significantly increase my energy levels.

I am with you Robin–I do find that since I have a fireplace it does help revive me. There is something about a fire in the middle of the day that relaxes me. A cup of tea, a good book, even work seems less dreadful in front of some flames. Makes winter bearable.

          • Marjorie Rose says:
            17 January 2017 at 12:02 pm

Sounds like your body wants to hybernate in the winter, which seems totally rational to me!

          • JadainGA says:
            17 January 2017 at 1:25 pm

Same here! I don’t get depressed, but my energy levels just bottom out. Most nights I can’t wait to get home, get thru dinner and bedtime routine, and jump in bed! Ugh….(Takes a Vitamin D as I type this….) 🙂

          • Jenkr says:
            17 January 2017 at 2:09 pm

I do like having seasons so I don’t hate winter per se and I actually prefer cooler weather to hot weather. I just don’t like having to go to work and get up early during winter because the dark/rainy/cloudy weather makes it more difficult to mentally deal with. If I could have shortened work hours so I could wake up naturally to get to work I’d be totally fine. 😉

          • Robin says:
            17 January 2017 at 2:58 pm

JadainGA, you sound like you might be another candidate for a happy light — I am using mine for 15-20 minutes first thing in the morning, and it’s sort of astonishing how much more I am getting done in the afternoons. I understand it also helps some people to fall asleep easier at night, but I did not really have that problem so couldn’t say.

It was suggested to me for some insomnia issues and therefore low daytime energy. Which, come to think of it, is probably worse in winter except when it’s 90+ degrees in summer. Then I’m a beached whale. I think I might try it. Certainly can’t hurt…

I am using mine at breakfast — that’s it, then I turn it off until the next day. I shoot for about 15-20 minutes, or I use the higher light level for a shorter time if I’m in a hurry.

      Found this at teaclass.com:
      Relatively high caffeine:
      Silver Needles (White)
      Gyokuro (Green)
      Matcha (Green)
      Assam (Black)
      Ceylon (Black)
      Darjeeling (Black)

The website also said that tea prepared with tea bags generally extracts more caffeine than from loose tea (so you’re in luck there), and that a longer brewing time (say, 4 or 5 minutes) with fully boiling water will extract more caffeine.

The only reason you usually get more caffeine from tea bags is that tea bags are more likely to contain broken leaves, or even what is essentially leaf dust, than whole leaves, and all other things being equal, the smaller the leaf, the more caffeine will be released. But it will really depend on the brand/supplier, and how the leaves were dried and processed in the first place will also affect the amount of caffeine.

As you well know Bear, when you REALLY need caffeine, you really need coffee 🙂

IIRC, coffee also has other stimulants in it that tea does not. . . lots of natural ingredients that give a person some pep!

OH, and that reminded me of that Guayusa tea, which I tried a couple years ago. Same amount of caffeine as coffee, but also has some other polyphenol that supposedly keeps it from making you jittery. I did not love the taste, though — not bad, but not as delicious to me as tea or coffee.

I find that PG Tips (easily found in a grocery store and relatively inexpensive in comparison to other high end teas) brews dark which in my mind equates to higher caffeine.

I wonder what it’s like to be able to afford teapots in that price range.

I find I have forgotten to make New Year’s resolutions. Whoops. Oh well; apparently they would only have lasted 17 days.

In 28 La Pausa today, because I think of it as an early summer scent, and we had a nice discussion yesterday about mixing up summer and winter scents. I could’ve done with more backbone.

No ditching of resolutions here! My resolution from our recent Weekend Poll (to vote with my dollar, i.e. financially support causes, products, and institutions I find worthy) dovetailed very nicely with a trip to New York this weekend! And vote I did, at Kinokuniya, Nintendo World, Aedes de Venustas, Glossier, Kusmi… 😀

So SOTD is one of my New York spoils of war: Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose (the 10 ml mini). The Aedes people really went above and beyond; they were sold out of individual Lipstick Rose minis, but they did have a set of 3, so they generously removed one for me to buy. My role models!

Yes I should have clarifies that my ultimate goal this year is to get the finances in tip top shape so no “unnecessaries” which included perfume. high end teas and fancy pastries, desserts, chocolates, etc (I have been known to spend quite a bit of money at our local bakery 🙁 )…..also, whilst I am quite thin I want to take better care of my health this year via good food and exercise so that is why I am attempting no sweets….I know that I am addicted to sugar and I really want to break that addiction…

and to clarify, I am wearing all three perfumes on different parts of myself…and yet I am smelling them all simultaneously and very much liking what I smell 🙂 All three gifties from a very generous fragrant fairy!!!

FWIW, I have succeeded in dramatically reducing my sweets with the simple rule that I can eat whatever I want, but I have to make it myself. This eliminates 90% of the possible impulse snacks (since most sweets take time to make), and it makes them more satisfying, so I find I don’t need to eat as much to feel like I’ve had something wonderful.

Over the years, I’ve added other “rules” to reduce my consumption further, but this one helped me cut back the most dramatically, and it was easier to stick with because my own treats were delicious and soul-feeding as well as body-feeding.

You could do a one or the other approach, with a juicy year end reward. Quite a few years ago – maybe 2012 or 13, I was in a “no buy” mode. And I also calculated that I would save at least $15-25 per week if I gave up chocolates. Astonishing! So…. at the end of the year, I was very proud of myself. I bought a bottle of Chanel Bois des Iles extrait and felt truly rewarded! This year however, I can sense there is not enough caffeine or chocolate in the world to satisfy my cravings for the dark beast. I’m giving up buying new fragrances instead.

I’m cozied up in bed, coffee in one hand and ipad in the other, contemplating another day trapped in the house by weather here – it is expected to get worse and worse over the course of the day as a half inch or so of ice falls on top of our 10-inch snow accumulation. I just hope power lines stay up – freezing rain often brings them down. Relief (of a sort) is supposed to arrive tomorrow with the arrival of warmer temps, bucketing rain and flood warnings, which will at least allow us to get to the store for a few essentials. SOTD will probably be Alahiiiine to keep me company while working from home.

Apparently, I do it on reflex now. I’ve given kids “the look” for running in the grocery store, knocking things off of shelves at Fred Meyer, bumping into me on the sidewalk without an apology. . .

I have to make a presentation at a work event today, and I’ve been dreading it for days (funny how the anticipation of a five-minute event can pollute an entire weekend!). I’m wearing Vanilia — one of the few vanilla perfumes I truly love, and one of my ultimate comfort scents.

Good luck. Losing days waiting for work events to unfold is miserable.

I heard an interview with the violinist Gil Shaham a few years ago that resonated with me on the issue of performance anxiety. He said he does get nervous, but he realized that if he makes a mistake, no one will be injured or worse ( as with a pilot or surgeon).
Of course, getting a bad job or critic review can have negative repercussions, but at least we have some power to fix it going forward.
I could ” hear” him smiling with peaceful resolve as I listened.

I love mornings like this, when I awake knowing exactly which scent I’m in the mood for. Today I awoke and immediately thought of L’Heure Fougueuse, which is a favorite that I haven’t worn in a while. I really think I should just bite the bullet and purchase a bottle the next time I have money to fling about. It’s one of those scents that makes me feel elegant even if I’m not: like wearing fabulous new undies beneath my everyday clothes.

I wore Beige on Sunday at a small family gathering. My uncle is, well, descending… (I think that is sadly the right word) into Alzheimer’s. I had begged my dad who is home from Singapore for several weeks to host the meal as my uncle gets too nervous and embarrassed to come to my house–too unfamiliar I think. Anyway, he came. And he gave me a big hug and said my name and then said, “You smell really nice!” And gave me another hug.

Coromandel is not the same- less patchouli and chocolate and is more linear.
The aldehydes in Beige are toned down and it has more honey. I happen to like aldehydes.

My SOTD is considered one that would be worn in the summer, but I have always worn it as a winter one; White Jasmine and Mint by Jo Malone. This was a Christmas gift from a relative. Living in a city where we really don’t have seasons, anyway, any fragrance is fair game whenever the feeling arises. So, White Jasmine and Mint for me today. 🙂

I have that same issue and it smells almost moldy to me when I apply too heavily so I don’t spray it. It seems to grow when I apply it so just a swipe on each wrist and the back of my neck-not near my face. I can smell it when I move around.

SOTD is Lyric. I smell wonderful. . . it’s Annikky’s fault for mentioning it yesterday. 😉

Today is the 9th school day cancelled due to weather, and there’s freezing rain in the forecast. This school year is never gonna end!

Not sure what to do with all my spare time today–still functionally trapped in the house. I’m baking bread. Maybe I’ll make some phone calls to plan for the wedding–finally call a make-up and hair person? Maybe call a travel agent for help with the honeymoon? Or maybe I’ll just be a lump and do some writing. 😉

Wow! Nine days out! How many days do you guys have built in your school year that is allotted for weather days? We would be well into the end of June trying to make those days off.
Maybe you have already mentioned it and I missed it, but have you decided on a fragrance for the big day yet?
Yes, I would definitely take advantage of these days and get as many things off the list as possible.

Vancouver schools? Washington State has gotten in lots of trouble around education the past few years. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the districts over there will go above and beyond in an abundance of caution to stay on the good side of the feds.

All things being equal, though, school into July seems cruel. You just KNOW the kids will be a squirrelly mess, and very little learning will occur.

          • Aparatchick says:
            17 January 2017 at 10:19 pm

Yep, Vancouver. And middle school, so you can imagine how squirrelly the kids will be.

      • Marjorie Rose says:
        17 January 2017 at 12:32 pm

Two days built in for my school district. Most of the neighboring districts do the same–2 or 3 days. There’s definitely varying willingness to be creative in getting days back, but mine is likely to add at least a full week at the end of the year.

The wedding is in July, which can have perfect weather or hot, sultry weather in these parts. Barring thunderstorms, it will be outside. Every time I sniff a “summer” scent, I think about if it would be a good fit. And do I want a new scent, or something familiar that I love? I’m open to suggestions!

SOTD–Chergui, of course! Damp and rainy, needed something to warm me from the inside out.

Had a wonderful weekend away with my book club (we do this weekend every year). Went to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and enjoyed every minute. Great food, shopping, lots of drinks and laughs, and, of course, conversation–even some about the book! I am blessed with amazing friends and family. This book club has been together for 20+ years. I joined in 2000, brought in by someone who was already in the club. We have gone through a few changes, but this core group has been pretty steady. A good range of ages, we have been through all of the major life events together–birth, death, marriage, divorce, serious illness, house selling/buying, college, job loss, retirement, etc, etc. We have all grown together from this in so many ways. Oh, and we all love to read!

I am wearing Vodka on the Rocks today…

It actually smells quite a bit like a gin and tonic and reminds me of quite a bit of the DKNY fragrance from (gasp) 10 or 15 years ago in the tall skyscraper-esque bottle…which I think was just called DKNY. Smells like lime, citrus and musk to me.

This one… http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Donna-Karan/DKNY-Women-504.html Came out in 1999. I am getting old. Le sigh. But yeah this is a dead ringer for DKNY to me.

    Hi all!

    1) Actually, this is around the time I start New Year’s Resolutions. I usually wait until the end of all Christmas holidays and Kwanzaa. My resolution is less wheat product (according the doctor, this may be connected to my GERD) more strength training and to learn another business skill for the year.

    2) In Sycomore today! Very lovely in cold weather- and the scent is even more intriguing when filtered through my sweater, which has remnants of Chanel 5 and TF Noir pour Femme.

I need to wash my sweater.

    3) Coffee with almond milk and a boiled egg.

I love vetiver in the winter, and all year round for that matter. Something about each season is complimented by vetiver. Sycomore is the bomb. It is probably the only bottle of anything I would ever buy at this point.

I am wheat-free for medical reasons, and if you need a bread replacement, look for the Fran’s Gluten Free bread. I buy it at my local grocery store and it is the closest I have found to “real” bread for sandwiches, french toast, etc.

There will be some sticker shock, though, it’s about $6.50 around here. Worth it though!

I’m curious what they think the wheat-GERD connection is. I have GERD although not chronic and is lifestyle controlled pretty well. Never noticed wheat products being a trigger though.

Yeah I am a little dubious about the GERD-wheat connection, although as a long time and chronic sufferer, I’ll try anything. But simple bread is the one thing I *can* eat at times when I haven’t been able to eat much of anything else.

Although going without wheat is good for weight control, and weight can be a factor with GERD. And different people are triggered by different things.

I developed a bunch of good habits over the break, and now the semester is back to destroy them all. Hooray!

In the half-bath downstairs, I have a Antica Farmacista Bourbon Vanille scent diffuser going on. She had not complained about it and thank God because I have a back-up of it!

Good morning, all. I was going to,post at least twenty minutes ago, but Dakkie arrived, looking sad, so I spent ages rubbing his soft, soft ears. We were both lost in mindless relaxation, then he started dribbling. Ewk!

Working at home for a couple of days, so I’m scented up in many, many spritzes of Apres L’Ondee. It’s so pretty and for all its delicacy, it’s a grounded perfume . It’s the scent of the earth. after the rain, not the scent of the air. I need that today: lots to do, and I need to forget a deeply disturbing, weird, but nonetheless horribly real dream. Also, I have a dilemma to resolve: do I, or do I not, buy the really stylish, interesting cardigan-duster thingy I have a yen for? It’s expensive for what it is, but not not hugely so; it would allow me to wear the mail sack more easily; I can dress it up or down, because it looks good with jeans and dresses. I can continue with any number of other rationalising remarks of this sort, but the truth is, I just fancy it. I think I’ll go for a walk after lunch and see what hapoens next….

You are wise…mind you, you’re also telling me what I want to hear! I decided that this year, I would add new pieces to my wardrobe unless they are remarkable. Now, “remarkable” can cover “remarkably useful” — that is, a new pair of well cut black pants — or “remarkably appealing” , as is the case in point. I want to be clear in my head that it is remarkable for some reason other than a passing whim, and if it is, I will buy it without a single guilty pang and enjoy it immensely.

Foxbins, thank you for your hummingbird comments on Sunday. I told the dear man, and as a result, he has spent some time researching the Columbia Gorge, and has decided that it’s so beautiful that we don’t have to go as far afield as he was originally planning! Yes! I’m so relieved — it seems to me that he always plans in three things and a thousand miles too many when we’re travelling, and I often end up feeling more exhausted than exhilarated by my holiday, especially when we have to drive on the other side of the road…. I’m not sure yet what his new plans are, but Il be very happy if he simplifies our itinerary.

That’s wonderful! There are a lot of hummingbird enthusiasts around here. Often the Sunday paper has articles on plants that attract them, and I am fairly sure I read that there is a public hummingbird garden somewhere in Portland. There are bald eagle nesting boxes in the Columbia River along Highway 84. I think you will be too late to see the babies, but I’ve frequently seen eagles while hiking in the Gorge. Plus if you like waterfalls you are in for a treat, there are hundreds.

Yup. I whole-heartedly recommend that visitors to the Gorge take the old scenic highway and stop at every turnout and scenic viewpoint from Multnomah falls to Crown Point and beyond! If you make it as far as Hood River, there’s some fun shopping, and the Goodwill has an entire case devoted to fragrance. Once in a while, a vintage treat shows up.

Oh, gosh, my husband does the same thing in planning these really ambitious trips, jam-packed with excursions (usually to see/hike over some natural feature of the landscape). After five days of this kind of thing, I’m exhausted. I have learned to say, “Look, I’m not enjoying this wall-to-wall schedule. Can we slow down? Or if you absolutely MUST go see those four things tomorrow, will you bring me back at lunchtime and just leave me at the hotel? Or the museum? Or a bookstore with a coffee shop?”

We should totally get the men together to go off on a driving/hiking marathon, while we do our museum/gallery/ perfume thing. My problem is that the dear one won’t do things without me. He’s not five, but he wants me along. I’m not as resilient as I used to be, and I get tired and grumpy.

SOTD is IPDF Ambra de Nepal. It is perfect for our foggy, icy day. I have no resolutions to give up. However, I have pledged to eat more good chocolate and get more sleep this year. It is more of a holistic lifestyle choice that is easy to maintain.

Wearing Bois des Iles in the new EdP formulation. It’s a love for me!

The EdT hardly registered on my senses, and this one lasts almost all day (although my days have been short lately so that may be an exaggeration – let’s say at least 6 hours to be fair).

And yeah, it is in me Top Ten!

Hi Ann, just a quick hello having not met you here for a long time, which could have been me not being here so often (work, virus, you know…life). I hope you are well and not totally freezing over. Please say hi to Emily!
Wearing Stash, very comforting cedar softness. No smelly armpits on the eurostar detected by my nose. if anything, a decent Englishman who just had a brisk walk.

Hi H! I was just overwhelmed with some very serious amounts of work at the year end – always a busy time with programs, budget, staffing crap, and we had a big tech overhaul. I didn’t have a “leisurely” regular start to my work day to include a jaunt over here. I had to hit the road running every day for weeks. I wasn’t even really wearing perfume for most of that time b/c I didn’t want any stress associated memories to my fav winter fragrances. I missed it for sure. We are all well. Just a little freezing over this year….

SOTD is L’Artisan Parfumeur Vanille Absolument. (It will always be Havana Vanille to me.) I forgot all about my favorite vanilla perfume. Gotta make up for lost time before it gets too hot to wear it.

Sampling Au Coeur du Desert today and so far it is quite lovely. I think I may be liking it better than LADDM. Somehow it seems more feminine…(?)

Oh good! The first time I smelled Box of Eels, it came from a pre-LE EdT at TPC back in 2009, and it was wonderful. Then I got it on a split of Les Exclusifs EdT and was puzzled by the fact that I could barely smell it, and it only lasted about an hour. If the EdP has better lasting power than the LE EdT version, I’m afraid I’m going to want some…

Continuing with my Kerosene tin exploration. All the scents so far are really quality, and though yesterday’s Unforsaken wasn’t as long lasting as the 1st 2 I tried (Follow and Copper Skies), it was delightful. Today I am on to Unknown Pleasures, as much for the Joy Division reference as for your recommendations 😉
I like a scent that starts from a place of juxtaposition, and I’ll report back how it does in a long drippy rainy day that has a research interview and a trip to the opera in it.

Please be considerate of those around you by refraining from using scents when you come to the Vancouver Playhouse. Thank you for your cooperation!”

I had to go back to work today–teaching–as I’m now semi-retired. I’ve been off since last May and kind of dreaded it, but it was invigorating! yay! I wore L’orpheline. It is my favorite among all recent Serges and I wear it when I want so smell nice and interesting but not too overwhelming or sweet. Got to project that “strong older woman” vibe to inspire all my female students!
