Monday scent of the day 1/2

Posted by Robin on 2 January 2017 214 Comments

life on planet LS-242 (abstract) [Explored]

It's the first Monday  of the year! It's also National Creampuff Day, if that helps any, plus National Science Fiction Day. (And don't forget, Donatella will be visiting us tomorrow.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing big jasmine, in La Via del Profumo Tawaf.

Reminder: 1/6 will be Take it down a notch Friday — wear a perfume that has a bad reputation because people wore way too much of it back in the day. Go ahead and wear it lightly, or go loud and proud, you'll get points either way. Suggested by Bear.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Definitely under the radar. Who knew that licorice with a little mint, vanilla and patchouli could be so nice?

Gorgeous dreamy photo! I could just step into it and disappear!

No scent as of yet but will wear something low key like Fresh Cream because I’m meeting a guy who wants to take a look at my FJ. It might entail a test drive so I don’t want to wear something that may make him pass out at the wheel. ????

Drinking my first Monday morning coffee of the year in the back yard while watching T-Rex demonstrate her canine super power jumping and flying skills. So powerful and agile! I’m envious!

Thank you! While I know I need to sell it, I hate to see it go. It’s been a rock solid dependable vehicle since the day I bought it. Plus, it just fits me. It’s the closest to being “cool” as I’ll ever get ????

Musc Ravageur Maurice Roucel. Even after an early morning workout and shower, a whisper of cinnamon and musk clung to my skin.
Sprayed abundantly because now I am drinking triple strength coffee, while preparing Chili. Onion, garlic, peppers, and beef complete the olfactory landscape.

Since my standard perfume resolution that I routinely fail is to try on skin more samples than I acquire , I am sampling Dasein Spring this morning. 3 samples down from the 40 leftover from last year (not to mention the backlog from previous years…..). Last year I only tried 210 scents on skin.

I’m awed by the concept of untried samples! I don’t have the restraint to put things away for later when I get a sample package in the mail.

Me neither! If they’re dabber samples, I usually tell myself they’ll stay discrete and apply like . . . three as soon as I open the package.

My samples have piled up too… 4th quarter sales always bring me a bunch of samples with my new FBs. This year I have (so far) refused to even count how many new samples are lurking. Suffice it to say I had to use a goodly sized box to corral them. Eep.

It’s a slightly powdery vetiver-centric scent that isn’t particularly me. I don’t remember if I’ve tried any of the others; if I have, they weren’t memorable enough to make it onto the full bottle wishlist

ISM is a very earthy, cold rooty iris. Not the soft, powdery type. It wears close to the skin for me. It is very beautiful. You should definitely try it.

It is very austere and dry, rather introspective. It seems almost lunar, with no sweetness or round corners. I don’t wear it very often but when I am in the mood for it, nothing else will do.

Tumulte Pour Homme today. My parent’s caretaker is ill and had a long weekend off for the holidays, so I’m going out there to fix lunch and dinner for another couple of days. I just read Kevin’s review of Tawaf, and it’s promptly gone onto my to-sample list! I’m doing my best to stick to one of my New Year’s perfume resolutions and not let samples pile up, and am trying out Broken Theories on one arm and Kouros on the other. I’m enjoying both — Broken Theories has a wonderful smokiness to it, like a campfire built out of wonderfully fragrant wood, and Kouros, while big, doesn’t seem at all as impolite as some would have you believe.

Well it goes on nicely, I can see why it is Sylvaine’s favourite – she loves white musc and almond and that’s what this smells like. However, it has low sillage and after 2 hours I could only smell it faintly if I pressed my nose up to my arm, so I just hosed myself down with Hypnotic Poison. Feeling much better now. :-)

thegoddessrena and Isabella have me contemplating my samples…
Somehow they have gotten the best of me and reading the “Best of 2016” lists has triggered the urge to get more. Perhaps this is the year to exercise restraint in that area, or reduce chocolate consumption. Doing them simultaneously would be really difficult.

SOTD is Majda Bekkali Mon Nom Est Rouge. I’m just starting to appreciate the rose after an hour of spicy incense.

In Aotearoa-New Zealand, we get two days of statutory holiday for both Christmas and New Year. It’s adjusted accordingly to accommodate Fridays and weekends, so tiday (my Tuesday) is a holiday here, except for the poor souls who work in retail. Many businesses simply close down on Christmas Eve, and quite a few won’t open this week at all.. I think we might be very lucky in terms of world practice, though. I’ve wondered too whether we get a day more at Easter than most places.

You’re lucky. Here most places had to work on December 24th. Everyone could go home at noon though.

Normally December 25-26th are Christmas Holidays here and then January 1st, but in 2016 it all happened on weekends, so we didn’t get any recompensation of an extra free day because those free days were saturdays or sundays.

Haven’t quite picked a SOTD yet. I’m working thru my ‘last chance’ bottles, trying them one more time before they get exiled to Ebay. So I’ll end up in a mix of things by the end of the day. (Cue Donna Summer’s “Last Dance”…)

Byredo Gypsy Water today. Packing up all the Christmas stuff – mostly because our poor tree is so, so dry.

Then beginning to sort through … everything. Looks like a big move to the Pac NW is in our near future (currently in Colorado). Although I am in favor of the reasons behind the move and we have family there, I am so stressed about the actual process of the move. If anyone has words of wisdom regarding a move after 25 years, I am all ears.

I hate!! the moving process. The longest I was in an apt before moving was 14yrs and it was painful. I think the antipatory dread was worse than actually packing up everything. Once I started, yes, it was a lot of work, but sort of meditative, actually. And the upside is we got rid of tons of stuff. I guess the silver lining is forcing you to decide what you don’t need to keep anymore and a new, fresh place with new possibilities feels really good. If I can do it, you can do it!!

Thank you for the encouragement. The worst part (and best part, of course) is that we have 3 boys who are all on their own now, but we still have lots of their stuff. Getting them to sort through is like pulling teeth…

I can see that being very stressful and though my circumstances are different, my husband tended to collect stuff which he didn’t want to part with, so that part did cause some conflict and stress. But we got through it and he did end up unloading quite a bit in the end.

Here is my perspective as one of those grown kids who have moved out but left stuff behind: give the boys (men) a firm deadline to claim any of their belongings, and then get rid of the rest (with the exception of a few sentimental items). If they haven’t managed to get the stuff out of the house already, it’s probably not a priority.

My parents gave my brother and I a deadline to deal with our belongings, and I’m so glad they did because I had forgotten how much I had left behind. What did I take with me from all of it? A cigar box that was given to me by my grandfather and a china bowl. Everything else that was important to me was already in my possession.

I moved after 15 years to a much smaller house and I found that going room by room, packing a few boxes each day and ruthlessly purging what hadn’t been used, didn’t fit, or I didn’t like anymore was key to avoiding last-minute madness. I also printed my own color-coded room labels for each box and labeled the contents. Knowing that lime green was for the bedroom made it much easier for the movers to get boxes where they belonged and knowing what was inside helped me unpack what I needed first. Good luck! If you are moving close to Portland I’ll invite you to dinner!

I moved from NM to NC in 2015, alone and with bronchitis the whole time. Here’s what worked for me: (I only had 5 years accumulation)

Started culling 4 months before the move, stuff going to friends, charity or the trash. This also helped me unconsciously categorize remaining possessions. Halfheartedly began packing belongings, least frequently used first (I unpacked these last after organizing, painting, decorating). When I was totally exhausted and overwhelmed, I took a perfume road trip to Vegas, for distraction and clean air. I figured since I was moving east it was something I wouldn’t get the chance to do again. On my return, the remainder didn’t seem so overwhelming. Organize your plans first, then try not to think about what you’re doing: music, tv, friends to talk to all help. Yes, it took me longer but I kept my sanity (I think).

      Good luck!

Well, not 25 years here,I lived 9 years here in the countryside.Moving the end of THIS(????) month back to the city. Also no good advice! But I did start packing early. And my process of elimination was this:if first thought is “this is trash”,then it is.No second doubts.I sold a LOT of furniture/clothing/bric-a-brac,and somehow the house is STILL not empty and I still require Stuttafords van Lines to pull in with a truck to come help me…Lol.I did also book a “fridge-truck”,seperate from the main move. They will come in at the very last minute to take my perfumes. It’s hot here, and I don’t want to move fumes with an ordinary truck, nor take six trips in my car myself.Yes I have a huge collection.Lol.Sooo…feeling your pain regarding a move!!x

springpansy, thank you for starting this thread. We are not moving imminently, but it’s in the future and I would prefer to start paring down and categorizing now. We used to move a lot and it helped us keep things organized. My husband loves to keep useless adaptors, phones, and electronics. Although some could end up in a museum or be an ancient artifact some day, I don’t feel the responsibility to make that happen!

Gosh, I could just say ditto, ditto, ditto to most of your post. It was only recently that the move changed from “in the future” to “imminent.” (My husband has a box of Christmas lights strings so that he can pull out a few if we break the good ones…)

And, to keep this post on topic, I’m already planning how best to move my perfumes and am looking forward to the next Freebie and Swap Meets – I’ll be listing some of my bottles for sure!!

Purge ruthlessly. Moving is a fantastic opportunity to get rid of accumulated excess. One of the minimalist bloggers I follow even said that if you’re not sure about any item worth less than $20 to get rid of it, if it’s something you could easily obtain later if you find you really need it. Think about how light and relaxed you will feel on the other end when you’re unpacking, and just do a few boxes at a time, starting well in advance. The dread is worse than actually doing it, just put on some nice music and start in. Good luck!!

Starting a week of Aedes de Venustas with “Oiellet Bengale”, which is nice and all that, but doesn’t really have enough ‘presence’ for my tastes. My skin tones everything down ridiculously, so I’m sure this one will work better for other people.

    Top: turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, cloves and saffron;
    Mid: rose, white pepper, big strawberry and floral notes;
Base: vanilla, tolu balsam, benzoin and labdanum.

I made a umimpressive progress on my book idea, but the first step is to get my brain thinking about this rather than about holiday food or whatever, so I’m not displeased. :^)

It’s a very nice floral spice! But after a very short while I can’t smell it. And at some point it 2016 I reached the tipping point between wanting to find more perfumes I loved, and wanting to be more discriminating because I can neither afford nor accommodate a roomful of bottles. So this one, I offer to the world! :^)

That was supposed to be “scentful” but obviously spellcheck did not agree. However, eventful is good too.

Morning, all. I’m starting the day slightly grumpy, because the Dakkie cat behaved DREADFULLY this morning! At 4 o’clock he started wailing as though his little heart was breaking, so I got up to investigate. His head was still in place, his legs were unbroken, he had knitted mice and food…I told him he was beautiful, he calmed down and I went back to bed. To sleep, which I rather need to do, but at 4.15, he wailed again, as only a Siamese can. And so on…he escalated his commitment to yelling his head off, actually. We gave up and made a cup of tea at 5, and Dakkie is currently draped over Richard’s leg, purring and looking smug. He has Fuzzy Logic with him (FL has Most Preferred Mouse status). So. What perfume do you choose when you feel cross? I didn’t care, so I randomly applied something by Michael Kor. I can’t remember its name–it’s in a square bottle covered in silver. I quite like it: it’s warm and rather syrupy, and it will do until the grump passes. Hope your days are peaceful and unmarred by the wailing of cats. Or anything else, come to that.

The wailing cat! We had one of those. More like screaming bloody murder. It started when she turned 16 or so and we worried that if anyone in our building heard it, they would assume there was torture going on and call the police. We finally took her to the vet after months of that and turns out she had gone stone deaf! She also had hyperthyroidism and treating that helped somewhat. But there were many sleep interrupted nights…

Hmmm. Dakkie appears to have all his faculties, such as they are, but I’ll be mindful of both deafness and thyroid functions for his mother. Isabella will be 15 in February, and she has a little list of ailments that we take to the specialist every two months for a “blunderbuss” treatment. I’ll have things checked.

I think he got what he wanted, all right–he wanted company! If you could have seen his happy face when we let him into bed. His blue eyes were all slitty and his purr was a real rumble! Dreadful, dreadful cat!

Oh yes, I understand completely! When my kitty girl decides she wants company she sounds as if we are cutting off her paws one by one. It’s a ghastly sound and I can’t sleep through it, so the behavior gets reinforced when I get up and she’s not alone anymore. Then she is perfectly happy and I want to pour my coffee over her head.

Ha ha, I love my cats enormously but am glad to hear someone else’s secret desire to do harm! My tiny calico cat Iris has so much will in her little body and INSISTS on sleeping smack in the MIDDLE of my pillow at night. I wake up and shove her to one side and after another hour I wake up and start the process all over again, and she complains and complains.

Ah, yes. My sister had one of those cats. He was an otherwise wonderful kitty who figured that if he was up at 5 a.m., everyone should be up at 5 a.m.

Oh my. Thankful that none of my four(!) do that. Although they do tend to walk all over me and lightly meow if I stay in bed too late. It’s not at all about my company…it’s about FOOD. Ungrateful beasts…although I’m generally the one who feeds them in the morning, they gravitate to my husband for affectionate snuggling….

My Tonkinese used to have wailing fits in the middle of the night too… turns out she would “kill” one of her mice and wail over it to proclaim her hunting prowess. Now I have a small fluffy Papillon dog who likes to sleep on my pillow, suffocating me and occasionally kicking me in the mouth. But I love her to bits and dread the day when she is no longer with me.

Feeling very blah and unmotivated today despite a very urgent writing deadline – as usual! A few minutes on NST is my momentary escape.

Lazily picked out a sample of my box: CD’s Bois d’Argent. Not experienced enough to articulate why, but sense that what I have left of AG’s Sables would complement it nicely.

    Meh… Monday…

SotD is Atelier Vanille Insensee. This was a Sephora freebie with purchase and I must say that I am really liking it! Opens with a note of lime, which really works. I can see going through this travel spray in no time flat!
I’ve tried a handful of the Ateliers and I’ve enjoyed them all, very pretty scents!

I am wearing L’Heure Bleue in vintage eau de cologne … It stays very close to skin if compared with the perfume strength. My aim was to stay in bed all day, but I have a restless four year old, so that did not happen:) but I am happy. This year I have realised that for all my love of vintage guerlain I hardly have any of their vintages in my collection, all due to the prices on ebay and perpetual lack of money..so now I am inspired to cheat my common sense and get me some…:)

Hurrah! EdM will have a Bleue sibling this year:

Time to put away holiday decorations and throw out a few stale holiday food leftovers. I’m a fervent no-waster when it comes to food, but no more holiday treats, please, I am full. I will give the crumbs to the birds on the lawn.

Wow! It’s Donatella time again already??!!
Once again, I am late to the party. Today is my first official day back at work since November 14th. Our students don’t return until tomorrow, so its a staff development day. I guess its a good way to transition back into the groove of things. The real test will be tomorrow when the kids return.
My SOTD is my favorite scent; Nectarine Blossom & Honey by Jo Malone. I needed something happy to put me into a good mood to make it through the day. Now I’m off to start calculating so I can report in to Donatella tomorrow. :)

Lazy and feeling my age today. We joined friends at the GB Packers bar last night, where I stood watching the game until I scored the arm of a couch on which to perch for the second half. Got home late, then stayed up until 2 am… Glad it is raining.

The review of the Aedes scent reminded me of a small decant of Cashmere Mist from. My sister, so I just sprayed that. Perfect for today.

This morning we had a tremendous storm that blew through with heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. I saw a gigantic lightning bolt strike the ocean water about one mile out and really jumped. It began to clear around noon and is now gorgeous, sunny, with clear blue skies and almost no humidity. Many people and dogs are out enjoying the beach and my mother and I are here baking inside–she’s doing brownies and me cookies. We’ve been invited to a party this evening where a neighbor will be serving gumbo. Today we packed up all the Christmas ornaments and so on. It’s always a bit sad especially since I never know whether there will be more Christmases with my elderly mother. I am wearing some from my decant of Francis Kurdjian Oud Satin Mood. It’s wonderfully creamy and not very oud-y and seems nice and calm in a happy way.

Last full day in London! We finally made it to the last remaining police box in London! We had a tour of Spencer House and Tate Modern, including the special exhibit of Elton John’s photo collection. We capped off the day with dinner at Oxo, the rooftop restaurant at Harvey Nichols. Oh, and a correction to yesterday’s account – the High Tea was at Bentley London and not the Belvedere.

We leave London tomorrow. I’ve had a wonderful 5 days here and I’m looking forward to my next adventure!

I am super low-energy as my wrist heals. So I’ve been heating and icing today. Did a few errands, made banana bread, and just played on the computer all day. Tomorrow I go back to work, and not looking forward to it.

Wearing Dries Van Noten for Frederic Malle today. It’s not bad, but feels a bit generic. Not a scrubber, but I also don’t imagine I’ll use up this sample.

I usually do testing on weekends/days off, but since it’s the last day before going to work, I decided to do my grocery shopping wearing Amouage Dia. I really like this perfume and think that it gets less attention than it deserves.
