Friday scent of the day 12/16

Posted by Robin on 16 December 2016 303 Comments

san-02

Happy Friday! It's also Jane Austen's birthday. Our community project for today: wear a sandalwood fragrance, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Diptyque Tam Dao.

Reminder: 12/23 will be Just Finish It Friday — finish a sample or decant you’ve been hanging onto for a long time, OR wear from a precious bottle that’s getting low. Big bonus points if you finish a bottle! (Suggested by Elisa)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

FRIDAY! THANKS YOU ARRIVED! Wearing 10 Corso Como. Today this is working beautifully for me. The incense note is amazing and roses are very satisfying. I will need to reapply a couple of times, since it is very fleeting on me. Ready to face the crowds this weekend to do my holiday shopping and trying to brainwash myself that I don’t need to incur in any perfume spending for me. Not so sure if I will survive…

SotD: Santal 33 which I know I have tried since my sample is about half gone, but I don’t remember. So far so good–it smells like a bit Luten’s Santal de Mysore with a bit of Cuir de Lancome and a dash of turpentine.

S(ip)otD: MF American Breakfast Tea with some almond milk.

It is not bad but I have to try it again every so often to remember it myself, and still sort of shocked that it’s so widely worn.

        in NYC especially.
I can’t tell you how many times I have smelled it on people in the streets, in central park, worn by both sexes

I’ve realised that although I love sandalwood in fragrance, I don’t own any sandalwood soliwoods – at least not a full bottle of anything. I could have worn a sample of Tam Dao or Santal 33, but in the end went with Trayee. It is said to have Mysore sandalwood and I simply enjoy immensely.

I considered wearing Trayee but it’s a little too cold for me for this perfume – so I went with a “warmer” Samsara instead. But Trayee is such a beautiful perfume!

Nobile 1942 Anonimo Veneziano – a warm embrace of labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood.

Twins! I also chose Dries van Noten. It’s “dress to impress” day at my school for the holiday assembly, and I thought that Dries would be a perfect “classy lady” scent to go with my spiffy self. Although I love it so much I would also regard it as perfect to wear with jeans and a hoodie.

Today is the last day before the winter break. This teacher is very grateful to be able to recharge over the next two weeks.

Beautiful photo at the top of today’s post. I have a small picture frame carved from sandalwood that smells divine. It was brought back from India when my friend Arti went there to be married many years ago.

I have not even tried the EdT since it went into the Exclusifs collection, but hope everybody knows the 15 ml Parfum is still “only” $200, which strikes me as a better deal that the 75 ml EdP for $185.

But I suppose I should keep my mouth shut until I go try the EdP, if I ever do.

And here I thought Chanel increased prices on everything every year! The Parfum had been $200 for the past at least 2 years. Maybe it’s time to load up before the price increases!

Wearing some vintage Samsara. This is a funny scent, because I’m never sure if I like it. I did, however, get a compliment this morning… but given how little Samsara I’m wearing, I’m almost certain what the guy was smelling was actually a waft of something fresh and fruity and watery that engulfed us both at that very moment. I’m now troubled to think that some stranger somewhere thinks I smell like melons…

    Happy Friday everyone!

I got over my fear (brought on by previously overspraying this one) of sandalwood enough to wear Champagne de Bois today. I’ve already gotten a compliment! The sillage on this one is positively nuclear. One tiny little spritz at 6:30 this morning, and I’m still half asphyxiated 4 hours later.

I love this perfume, but it may be the only perfume I own that hands down would be better dabbed than sprayed. There’s definitely some sort of ambery accord in the base of several of Laurie’s scents that can be cataclysmic if over applied.

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            16 December 2016 at 1:24 pm

Okland- i agree…i kind of wish that Laurie would not have stopped selling the splash bottles…because honestly in perfume strength they might very well be better off dabbed…

I know that..*now*. But it was definitely a learning experience. The very first time I tried this scent (my first SSS scent) I had no idea, and was feeling extravagant. Blithely sprayed on 6 spritzes. I reeked of sandalwood for days, my clothes reeked for months. I just don’t love sandalwood that much. Haven’t been able to go near this specific perfume for ages.

    Bourbon French Kus Kus.

Its warm and spicy powder, powdered sugar and soft sandalwood. I bought this in the New Orleans French Quarter last month. The sales lady at Bourbon French Parfums said they have been producing this scent since 1843.

Today is my daughter’s college graduation. Big day today for her. Graduation is for 3pm, and dinner afterwards for family and close friends. Chargrilled oysters–yum!!

Forgot a bout Friday project today, and wearing Fille en Aiguille, one of my winter favourites. I’ve spent much of the afternoon printing out my Lino cut for Christmas cards, and I’m feeling really good about being immersed in an art project for the first time in ages. I doused myself with Tam Dao this morning, then oversprayed with Fragonard Santal, a lovely light floral sandalwood cologne… It makes me happy to think of something many people wafting this salutary scent into the winter air…

I didn’t think I’ll participate in today’s community project until I saw a comment from JadainGA- thank you for the hint! I am in Amouage Gold, since it has sandalwood in the base, good thing I can’t single it out, it is so well blended.
Normally I loathe sandalwood and it hates me back. It either registers on me as dirty socks (Samsara, Shalimar) or simply bothers me to the point where I want to scrub it off my skin ASAP.
Too bad… I wish I could wear Box of Eels, Santal Blush and Taklamakan. Sigh…

Wonder how you would fare with real sandalwood oil…some people don’t react well to synthetic sandalwood but get on fine with the real essential oil….

Thank you for suggestion chocolatemarzipan! I will try real sandalwood eo, but will postpone my purchases until next year. Do you know where I can get a real thing in small amount? I probably don’t need more than 1 ml.
By the way, I love your new avatar, but I miss old one a lot (cookies/owl)- a piece of art!

Eden Botanicals sells sample sizes of all oils…you could also try their sandalwood sampler pack which has a variety of sandalwood e.os…

I am sure I will go back to my “edible owl” eventually but right now I am having fun changing the avatars and keeping all NSTers on their toes :) !!

If you collect votes, I’m joining mine for the return of the “edible owl”! The current one isn’t bad, mind you, but it’s not every day you come across something that unintentionally creates the same illusion for many people.

I’d add that Eden also has a sandalwood absolute that smells amazing. It’s a little thicker consistency than the essential oil.

I will second that…out of all the sandalwoods eden carries that one was always my favorite…it is sweeter and more unctuous….unfortunately it has been out of stock for a while :( and I am not sure if they are going to bring it back…but it might still be available in their sandalwood sampler pack…..I used the powder sandalwood that is in the sampler in a “lipgloss” I made with non-petroleum “jelly” that I got in the health food store…the powder sandalwood imparts a nice dark nude pigment and the jelly is shiny enough to pass as a gloss…plus both are great for your lips!

I love sweets as well, but prefer either to bake myself or to get something from Trader Joe’s, particularly I enjoy Raspberry Tarte- super Yum! Chocolate is another story- to fight my addiction I asked my DH not to buy any bars for a while, I just can’t stop!

You smell exquisite! Gold definitely is well blended–like, immaculately so.

Sandalwood generally doesn’t work for/on me, either. So there are many great scents like Box of Eels I won’t ever bother sniffing if I have to buy a sample instead of trying in person, from a tester.

Cold here but no snow; we’re supposed to get either ice or freezing rain tomorrow YIPPEE (not). Wearing Samsara parfum – don’t know how old it is since I bought it off teh ‘bay, but it’s in that little micro-mini red glass bottle with the gold stopper top. Niiiiice.

(Up top, it always always reminds me of the long-gone Revlon Xia Xi’ang, which I was wearing my senior year of college and on our college choir’s trip to Poland, then-Czechoslovakia and Austria. So – Samsara makes me think of that wonderful two weeks of my life. I don’t know why I don’t wear it more often.)

The big news today is that Gaze received a nomination from our Senator’s office to the USMA at West Point! He still has to finish the application process and pass the DODMERB (physical) exam, but it’s a big hurdle successfully jumped. I was surprised, because I thought he *might* get a recommendation from our Congressman, whom we know personally, but it actually came from Sen. Warner’s office.

I’m conducting a side-by-side sandalwood test here! (I don’t have to go anywhere in public today.) On my right forearm is Tom Ford Santal Blush; on my left, SL Santal Blanc, and on the tip of my fingers, just the last droplets of my precious bottle of MPG Santal Noble. The Tom Ford is pleasant but to me it lacks depth. It’s very one-dimensional and light. I get no floral chords at all from it. It’s almost got a sneeze-inducing factor. The SL is lovely but too full of curry and spice. It goes on sweet but isn’t sweet at all after half an hour or so. MPG has long been my favorite sandalwood (even more than SL Mysore), it is deep, golden, and rich. It’s maybe got too much amber for some tastes but I love that. I’m heartbroken that it is discontinued and really hard to find now. :-(

When I was a poor grad student I wore (and loved) sandalwood essential oil, so I was surprised to find not a single sandalwood scent in my current collection. Settled for my winter standby, Oscar de la Renta’s Santo Domingo. For some reason, this scent (along with the others from OdlR’s Essential Luxuries line) have been neglected by the blogs, Basenotes, etc. but they are really lovely, and Santo Domingo is the standout for me – soft tobacco and citrus.

    SOTD = Puredistance White

So once again, I snubbed my BdI EDT for a different sandalwood fragrance. I wanted to balance the universe slightly. Puredistance White is a plush blend of rose, orris, tonka, sandalwood, musk, vetiver and patchouli. The notes include ergamot but I don’t smell it at all and instead, I get peach or apricot. I may bave relayed this story before but please indulge. The first time, I wore this to the office, 2 of my co-workers kept following me around to sniff the air around me. I told them what it was and they were shocked at the price. I gave them the contact details but neither of them followed through.

Eeek, right now, I am standing in a Starbucks line and the person ahead of me is wafting Ewww de La Vie est Belle!

Why is it that the people who project are never wearing something really, really good?? It’s like people who drive around blaring music out of their cars, and it’s never, say, Led Zeppelin.

You smell wonderful! I’m thinking… Maybe I should wear WHITE for Christmas? It’ll be very fitting :)

The most expensive brand I’ve ever been able to interest anybody in was JHAG. All other inquiries (and even samples/decants) about “what is this wonderful scent” had never resulted in perfume purchases.

White for Christmas sounds perfect. I would have to choose carefully because several family members are scent phobes. I will probably wear Vanilla Smoke.

I’m in Amouage Interlude Woman today. The sandalwood in this one is strong on my chemistry.

I won a sample of Interlude Man and whenever I wear it, I get the sneezies for the first minute or so!

I need to try that one again. The first time I wore it, the concatenation of unusual top notes was so surprising that I don’t know that I even noticed anything in the base.

Happy birthday Jane Austen! We’ve been watching the BBC Emma mini series lately, for the sheer comfort of all those rolling lawns and lovely frocks and Mr. Knightley’s no-b.s. gentlemanlyness.

Woke up sick and still under assault from yesterday’s migraine, so I wasn’t sure I’d want to wear *any* fragrance today, but then I caught sight of L’Eau d’Hiver and it felt just right for a day when I’m feeling grisly and the cold north wind is scouring the last of the golden leaves off our willow trees. I’ll wear something sandalwoody tomorrow, to make up for skipping out on the theme du jour!

SOTD = Samsara EdT. This is one of my desert island perfumes, along with the EdP. I can’t choose between them, so I have both bottles.

You’ve certainly got all. Ases covered! Do you mod rn or vintage or one of each?

My bottles are not current by my reckoning. I picked them up in either 2009 or 2010. The first blind buy I ever did, and it worked out very well!

So, finally a “complete” scent-twin for me! I’m also wearing Samsara EdT.

Long day today. Since I love sandalwood, I think that everyone smelled lovely. I chose Mohur Extrait as my SOTD. Thanks hajusuuri for hosting this split!

Scent cousins, maybe? There are a few of us in NV today, but all in different perfumes.

SOTD was the wonderful Neela Vermiere Bombay Bling, which I applied sparingly, and which is just about gone. Glorious while it lasted, though, with its gorgeous mango note over a smooth, spicy base. I did three days of sandalwood, with the never-disappointing Estée Lauder Sensuous on Wednesday, and Guerlain Samsara edp on Thursday. I suspect I would have liked Samsara better back when it was a powerhouse–it seems very tame nowadays, although certainly pretty. Sandalwood is a note I feel I’m just starting to fully appreciate, so I’m looking forward to reading about what everyone else wore.
