Friday scent of the day 11/4

Posted by Robin on 4 November 2016 275 Comments

wishing peace

It's Peace Out Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that brings / gives peace. (Thanks to Lovestosmellgood for the suggestion!)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with my old standby, Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate. I'm pretty chill.

Reminder: 11/11 will be Iris Friday —wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Last day of peace=essential oils

SOTD- “ Violet”- an essential oil blend of lime, bergamot, anise, cassie, violet leaf, ambrette seed, cocoa absolute, bourbon vanilla, double distilled vetiver, opoponax, sandalwood absolute, orris butter, amber and alpha ionone

This one is right up my “valley”- to quote Clarissa’s auto”carrot” yesterday !!

And as an aside, the discussion of female perfumers yesterday brought to mind this post from one of my very favorite artisanal female perfumers, Jessica September Buchanan. I love how she writes about her passion and the challenges of running an incredibly small perfume company (a one woman show!)

Have a blessed and peaceful weekend, y’all!!!!

Very early morning for me, so my brain wasn’t really connected as I was deciding. But…I chose Poudre de Riz, which is very calming to me.

Seems colder now than it was earlier this morning. Go figure.

    Have a great Friday everyone!

I swear I was going to participate in todays community project, honest, but when I got home last night my latest purchase had arrived and new bottles always trump project plans. So today I am wafting the glorious oriental that is Theo Fennell’s Scent. I got two bottles at £12.95(!) each. Obviously, it had to be two to qualify for the free postage code…

I am hoping to find a bottle from someone who will ship to Canada.
      You smell amazing

They were from fragrancedirect.co.uk. Just had a look and they ship to Canada! They only have the edt version on at the moment though – £10.95 or $13.66. Not enabling or anything… ;)

They lead you on, but at the very end of the checkout, you get a big red symbol of an X through an airplane – they won’t ship perfume overseas
Thank you for the potential lead though

SOTD: CB I Hate Perfume – In the Library
This scent forever transports me to a cozy, book lined den with a roaring fire and big comfy leather armchairs.
Add a glass of single blend scotch, and a greyhound at my feet
( knowing mine ON my feet rather than at them) and you have this scent.

Oh, and I am wearing it over the new Tauer Amber Oil. A rich, chewy amber. Sweet, but not gourmand.

L’air du desert marocain for my peace. And off to get my hair trimmed, after feeling scruffy for the last couple of weeks. The only bad thing about a pixie cut is the maintenance.

I also have a pixie cut and started having that scruffy feeling yesterday. I scheduled my next appointment for 8 weeks out but I’m not sure I’ll make it. I don’t mind getting it cut so often, but coloring it is a drag. Fortunately my stylist had no problem with me doing it myself – she buys the products and I reimburse her for them. I’d never attempt to do highlights or anything complicated like that but a single color on 1″ hair is easy peasy.

Oh, and scent cousin – I’m in Au Coeur :)

Have you tried Parfumerie Generale Papyrus de Ciane? (at least I think that’s the name..) It’s been a while since I smelled it, but it’s the closest thing to green incense that I can think of. It’s very green, at any rate.

SOTD Suleko Djelem comforting, calm, and peaceful. It’s quiet enough for a 3+ hour car ride but also long lasting. Her inspiration for this scent was the joy and passion of the Gypsy and when she presented it at a panel discussion 2 weeks ago she showed a clip from a Russian (B) movie from the 70s called “Gypsies Go to Heaven”. I’m not sure I think the perfume quite matches, but fun imagery, nonetheless.

I’ll have to look around to see if I can find it(for free, preferably). The perfume is worth checking out- it’s sort of herbal/hay/lavender up top and then a soft powdery vanilla that smells a little iris-y to me.

A very concrete interpretation of the project is DSH Peace Parfum, from the Peace, Love, and Perfume Project. It’s a cozy incense that is calming and “contemplative “.
    Wishing peace to all.

I was up at 3:30 with burning puffy eyes because I mixed up eye drops and put in too many of the one that can irritate. I rinsed my eyes and stayed up to make sure things cleared up. The vials look really similar when you are tired. I’ll put my own distinguishing marks on them. Arrghh!

It always brings me peace of mind to know I smell good so I’m wearing Adjatay, my instant love/impulse buy from yesterday’s sniffing binge– I went to Twisted Lily, Osswald, and Aedes (waves to Wendysue whom I got to meet). My bus was almost 40 min late and we’re still in Manhattan. Sigh. At least I smell good and have chocolate chip and cheese strudel from Zabar’s to munch on.

Scent for Friday = Infusion d’Iris Absolue. Peaceful? I think so. I hope everyone has a moment (or more) of peace on this fabulous Friday.

While reading about peaceful perfumes here at NST this week, I caught on to the incense and peace idea. The photo at the top of today’s post helped too. It’s time to expand my fragrant mind. I’m planning an after work trip to the perfume counter at Nordies for some peaceful sniffing.

Commando at the moment. I’m off work today and taking my time getting dressed.

Off topic: I think I’ve passed my perfumista genes to my almost-10-year-old son. When I woke him up for school this morning it was apparent that he had been sampling my Tauer Rose Delight body oil sometime last night. His teachers and classmates will be smelling roses all day! He finished my Lord of Misrule bath gel in short order, and he routinely digs his little fingers into all of my scented candles. So proud, but a little worried. My habit is expensive enough, now I may have to support his as well!

I wore Commodity Moss to the Fushimi Inari shrine today (see Robin’s picture from yesterday!). It’s not the most amazing scent ever, but I like it and it suited the place – and the Friday theme, too, I think.

We’ll be leaving Kyoto tomorrow, sadly. Still 1,5 days in Osaka to go and then back to Europe.

It really is beautiful – the orange-red gates are simple but visually so effective. You just have to be prepared that there’ll be thousands of tourists, so it’s not quite as peaceful as on the photos. Although when you walk higher up, there are moments when you only see the torii, no people. I’m sure going very early in the morning also helps – we tried, but got lost and were late????.

Everyone smells gorgeous today. I’m in Chanel Cuir de Russie because decant arrived fresh in the post. This kind of beauty is a peacebringer, except that I may have to splurge on the extrait at some point…I have not opened its greatgrandmother, I think I will do it this weekend. You’ll be the first to know!

I’m in SSS Incense Pure. I find this so peaceful/contemplative that I keep a sample vial in the pen tray on my desk, and I find myself compulsively sniffing it during the day regardless of which scent I’m wearing. I think it’s the only perfume that I can smell that repeatedly/continuously and not get sick of it.

    Peace and love, all!

Triplets! Kyoto is one of my favorite incense fragrances, and so wonderfully evocative. I visited a zen dojo last year and noted that it smelled exactly like CdG Kyoto (though it’s really the pefume that smells like the incense, and not the other way around). Wishing a day of peace for everyone, without and within.

I actually intended to wear Balkis but as the bottles are similar, and as I take a long time to get my brain into some sort of working order, I’m wearing yesterday’s scent again. About to step out in Au Coeur du Desert. L’Air du Desert Morocain has always made me think of being in the desert in a windstorm, with air whipping through date palms. The extrait has less movement: perhaps the desert at sunrise after said storm. It’s smoother, rounder, and almost creamy compared to the original’s dry desert air. The calm after the storm?

I’ve been thinking about this project, and there are many frags in my collection that bring me comfort, but then I thought that that isn’t exactly the same as peace, so I tried the incense route that so many have taken this week. The winner is 10 Corso Como! Never hear much about it anymore (maybe because of the reformulation), but I still have my old pre-reform bottle, and it’s fabulous stuff.

    Have a peaceful weekend, everyone!

I’m not sure, but I think I bought it first around 2006 or so, so I probably got my second bottle a couple years after that, and it definitely wasn’t the same. Not bad, of course, just thinner.

Such a nice theme. We all need a little peace right now. Sotd is Atelier Silver Iris.
Sorry I’ve been AWOL from here for awhile. Lots going on and getting ready to go back to India for the Winter. A very generous NSTer swapped a small bottle of JM Red Roses to me as well as a small decant of Hadrian and a perfume oil that smells like the old Jovan Musk oil which I love. I decided to bring all three of those in addition to some Santal Carmin for my perfume rotation while in India.

Most of it was from the swap! Red Roses is perfect for India, it has that little bit of honey in the dry down that turns slightly urine in a way that really brings out the beauty of the rose.

My Smell Bent samples arrived last night so I am as peaceful as can be while wearing four scents at once. There were two surprises with my order…generous gifts…and one of these is Smoked Ambergris which I was super curious about having smelt the local, museum’s ambergris collection. The perfume captures the buttery caramel boozy aspect perfectly. I was also interested in Artist’s Studio following JonNbob’s description…and it is certainly worth smelling as it is the only perfume I know that carries a strong hit of fresh plaster of paris. Quite cool. Incensed and She Wolf remind me of Lush perfumes in their resiny, jasmine boldness. Florist’s Fridge is perfect for my green spring. All good fun but I am not smitten…but they might all grow on me and I am glad I ordered them. They seem a little rawer than Lush and not as polished or complex as Dame in terms ( the oils). Would love to hear if anyone else wears these.

Yay!Enjoy! They certainly are fun.Lush is a bit overbearing sometimes to my nose, the Dame’s I have a problem with:two of my perfumes’ from Dame’s consistency changed. They now look like watered-down wallpaper glue. The scents are still fine, but I do not like my perfumes going all mushy-yuck.

    Happy peaceful Friday, all!

    1) Am in the las spritz of Breath of God, which was wonderful, supplemented with Stash Elixir in my hair.

    2) Took the day off – I need to get work done on my helllstrip. But I forgot to tel my sup I was taking the day off, yikes!

    3) All right so I see that my homegirl*, Gwyneth Paltrow, has released pre ordering for a natural perfume, and I see you guys have dragged on her already. Which- fair enough. The notes are lovely, but at the price point you can get small batch oil based perfumes for far lower, and the larger niche makers like Nasomattu will give more for the money.

        2) I know! It was a major stupid oops because I usually let EVERYBODY in the office know if I am out or even running late (because of the commute on mass transit, previous health issues and being a single woman). Fortunately, my sup got very concerned and texted me, so it’s all good.

I don’t get the dragging on GP (thus the moniker GOOP). I have to think it’s because of the seeming indulgence in woo (which, tbh, many wealthy people do out in California and in certain circles in NYC) and the fact that she is wealthy enough to indulge in a type of lifestyle that requires many Presidents to maintain, at a time where income inequality feels very real for many, and broadcast said lifestyle. I don’t know; I find her amusing, her trainers’ workouts very exhausting (in a good way) and her recipes rather delicious. She’s harmless.

Bohemian Spice, by April Aromatics, as part of my continuing quest to try everything in the exploration set. It’s good, more woody than spicy to my nose. It won’t dethrone Nectar of Love as my favorite so far, but I think it would really work for many people. Definitely worth a try.

Natural fragrances make my brain happy, so this line fits with the peace out theme, too.

I’m also thinking Bohemian Spice is sort of an incense, as well. Sort of like Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Morocain without the patchouli. Nice stuff! The problem for me with this line would be narrowing it down to one. I need a coffret!

Like many of you, I associate sandalwood and incense with a ‘peace’ fragrance but I would also add the color blue. My SOTD, the long d/c YR Ode au Reve, with its lovely soft blue flacon that fits comfortably in one’s palm, and its soft notes that include sandalwood, cedar, labdanum, gurjum, musk, vanilla, and incense, is my choice for today’s theme.

The notes of grapefruit and LOTV seem an odd choice for a fragrance intended to celebrate peace, but these notes are found in Bond No. 9 Scent of Peace, which this theme prompted me to try yesterday from a sample I received from a trip to NY years ago but have never used. Although I would agree with the Fragrantica reviewers who said it was similar to Light Blue and I did enjoy its cedar note, this fragrance that was created to inspire peace in the post 9/11 world missed its mark with me.

The YR ‘Ode’ line was from the early 2000’s and featured 4 scents: Ode au Reve in the blue bottlle, as described above; Ode a l’Amour, in a pink bottle, a warm spicy/plummy amber; Ode a la Vie in a green bottle, the one that introduced me to what has become a much-loved note, galbanum; and Ode a la Joie in a yellow bottle, bright and sunny as its color implies, with ‘solar’ notes, jasmine, and a touch of pineapple. The bottles lay flat and fit nicely in the palm of the hand, a tactile touch I always enjoyed but many did not. I liked that there were 4, one for each season, and I still use them that way, Reve in the fall, Amour in winter, the bright green of Vie in spring, and sunny Joie in summer.

I forgot to list the notes: bergamot, grapefruit, cardamom, mint, ivy, indian jasmine, mimosa absolute, sunflower, cedar, incense and ambroxan. If I bury my nose in my wrists it is just lovely. But if I spent my day like that, I’d (a) get no work done and (b) be led gently away to the lunatic asylum. With my wrists doing what they’re paid for (mostly getting my fingers onto the keyboard) I can’t smell a thing.

We have a new guy in the office and he’s nosing around and pissed off one of my colleagues by suggesting ways for her to improve a presentation deck. This was the guy our manager said will help us navigate senior management while she is on leave which was really a stupid thing for her to say because 1) he is brand new and won’t know his front end from his back end and 2) we already regularly deal directly with senior management two heartbeats away from the CEO. Anyway, my plan is to be courteous and gracious and bore him and I will choose one of the projects from the bottomless pit of work and engage him to push it forward and make him feel involved and important.
