Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late October 2016

Posted by Robin on 22 October 2016 283 Comments

[PSA: the swapmeet is still open, and so is our latest giveaway.]

Today, our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the last perfume you tried and loved but probably won't buy, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I am in Le Labo City city exclusive for Russia- wears close to the skin but its lovely.

Caught up on Indian Summers, sad they canceled the series

THÉ DU HAMMAM green tea is hitting the spot by Palais des Thes On this rainy day. Because of their friends and family discount I really splurged !

I just started watching the second season of Indian Summers; there are some wonderful actors in it. And all that lush scenery. Add me to the sorry-they-canceled-it list.

LOVE Indian Summers. In my head I re-titled it “Beautiful Bad People Wear Beautiful Clothes and Do Bad Things in Beautiful Places.” I have skimmed through several episodes with the sound off to better appreciate the visuals.

Cancelled??? I hadn’t heard. It’s such a great series. The first season was one of my favorite Masterpieces ever. Hard to watch, but so well done.

smell bent cocoa rose.Man,I love this brand!!It’s been a week or two of wearing a couple from Brent, and I fall madly in love each time.Cocoa rose is a bit heavy for today’s early summer weather, but the menthol-patchouli note keeps it from becoming “too much”.

Enjoying a preshower dab of vintage Diorella with my coffee. I think that’s what I’ll be putting on post shower too!

I saw the new L’Artisan bottles in person and I’m not really a fan. The color is too dark. The charm is gone! Time to stock up on old-bottle favorites while they’re still inexpensive.

I do like the new bottles but I’ve got so used to the flood of old ones being £29.99 at TKMaxx that I’d find it hard to pay full price for one. Maybe if they reintroduced the long-discontinued ones that people say were wonderful – Patchouli, Vanilia, L’Eau de Navigateur etc.

I wish you could pass those cheap bottles this way! They bottom out at $60 at discounters sites here, which is good but limiting enough not to get the 5 I want.

This morning I sprayed Aedes Cierge de Lune lavishly and with abandon & it felt great.
It’s one of those perfumes that I can’t get enough of.

Oh, glorious day here in the swamp! It’s in the 70’s, breezy, and low humidity. In other words, PERFECT! Had a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup for breakfast and now contemplating what fragrance to wear…I’m thinking Tauer’s PHI will hit the spot, or maybe Kalamat? I could drown myself in Chergui. Decisions, decisions…

T-Rex is on fire today! I trimmed back a Brazilian Pepper tree that was encroaching into my backyard, piled all the limbs nicely for transporting, went inside, and came back out just now to see that T-Rex has “rearranged” the entire pile. Brazialin pepper trees are considered an invasive pest tree, but the sap smells wonderfully camphorous, and now, so does my dog. The birds love the the red berries, which apparently make them slightly drunk or high…so interesting!

Yes, and often crash into houses, fences, sheds, etc. Some are able to shake it off and fly right, but a few are injured to the point they can’t escape the neighborhood cats.

Lyric today. I still have some late roses blooming, and the bouquet I brought in last week smelled wonderful. I’m trying to make that feeling last. :)

Latest fragrance I wanted to buy was Ambrosine, by Francesca dell Oro. But, I am avoiding purchases this year in light of the big party I’m throwing this summer (aka the wedding).

I have been meaning to whine here for several weeks now, to sympathetic ears, but haven’t gotten around to it: big down side to the legalization of pot in Oregon–I can be walking or driving about in the neighborhood and suddenly there’s a whiff of the most terrible BO! It’s so pervasive, I wonder if my deodorant has stopped working and I forgot to shower! Then, it slowly dissapates and I’m reminded that it’s probably formerly-controlled substances. The stuff REALLY stinks!

Dear Marjorie Rose, may a time machine never transport you to the Oregon of my 1960s childhood. We lived near college campuses (Dad was taught history) and, legal or not, it was everywhere (and is probably why I loathe the smell). ;-)

Hi Marjorie! Glad to hear the wedding is scheduled, and wish you well with the spending freeze.

I also remember driving behind a smoking car one night, smelling skunk, and realizing that they weren’t having engine trouble. On the other hand it’s nice it’s so stinky, since it makes it easier to avoid (when it’s not pervasive).

We are bucking gender stereotypes a bit–2/3 of the wedding stuff is far more important to my fiance than it is to me. So the stress, for the most part, for me is found in trying to help him have the meaningful wedding he wants when he is less than clear about details along the way! An example, it has taken months (months!) for him to define what he wants in attendant clothing beyond “I just want us all to look good together.” :-/ But, thankfully, THAT decision was made this week. :)

I read a news crawl today, unsure what network, that said pot growers in Colorado are breeding plants with continually higher THC levels, while the state now realizes it has not legislated any limit. Should be interesting.

Inspired by yesterday’s discussion on Chinatown, I’m in Beaufort London “Coeur de Noir”.

    Top: rum, ginger and ink;
    Mid: paper, leather and vanilla;
Base: cedar, tobacco and birch tar.

This one is Ink, ginger and smoke on me today, and cheering up a day of coughing and sputtering as the cold virus slowly continues its grand tour (done the thoat, done the head, let’s spend some time in the chest.

Wearing Vol de Nuit Evasion sent to me by a kind perfumista. Nice, very nice, but no profound love.
Actually did a little sniffing today. 2 Lutens Baptême du Feu and L’Orpheline, and I unfortunately tried Myths Woman. Love it, really love it. A narcissus on steroids. The bottle is very trashy, as is the box, but it somehow adds to the charm.

Two of my favorite recent Lutens! What did you think of those?

Sadly, no Amouage counters near me and I’m loathe to try a line I can’t afford. That said, I loooove narcissus.

Sorry to say that I didn’t like either of them. I’m not Lutens biggest fan, although I do love a few of his earlier creations but have sort of lost the will to try them.
I think La Fille de Berlin is the last one of his that I tried and liked.

Myths W is well-done! It wasn’t love for me (I find it drier than I like, and it spends a *lot* of time in the woody phase on me, as opposed to the floral one), but it is really good. My big narcissus love is Le Temps d’une Fete, but Ostara is lovely, and Dame Perfumery does a really nice dirty Narcissus soliflore as well (bonus, it’s really inexpensive).

I second the recommendation of Dame…it is a real narcissus and you either love it or hate it….the few times I wore it to work I got comments on both ends! But I love it….and you can get a travel size for under ten dollars…free shipping to boot! You can also layer it with other fragrances to boost the narcissus note…..just sayin’ :) !!!

Yesterday I came across a big haul of vintage perfumes, I am in heaven smelling and organizing everything, I think this was a collector, she had several bottles of vintage YSL Paris, Chanel No.5 cologne, Mitsouko from 1980’s, Shalimar cologne and several Guerlain samples and a lot of minis.
I am wearing Flowerbomb, an old bottle that I want to finish to make room for my new beauties.

It is a strange story. There is this guy who saves things from garbage and found all of these thrown out , sold them to me. I never find these much at estate sales either, sometimes I ask and I feel so bad when they tell me they threw them out, actually he has listed some of them at ebay. If you want contact me and I can give you his info. I am not affiliated.

Spent a little too much money with TPC flash sale and I really can’t be spending money on Perfume. Donatella will forgive me but my bank account probably won’t. I haven’t taken a shower yet and I am wearing vintage Bal edt. I have dinner plans for tonight and I am figuring out what perfume I should wear. My choices are Nahema, Ingrid, or Lyric.

First date tonight. Thinking about what scent to wear. I’m leaning toward Tauerville Vanilla Flash. It’s garnered lots of spontaneous compliments. I’m not much into gourmand or sweet fragrances, but asking the average man to love my more out there things is a lot to ask.

There’s a rebel in me that says start as I mean to continue, and wear Bvlgari Black ;D Beside Secretions Magnifique, which is unbearable on my skin, what would be the most out there thing to wear? Enjoy your Saturday.

vintage can be pretty out there for first dates–super sharp, dry chypres or animalics…
but it could also be a plus, smelling like no one else your date has encountered.

BeauFort London “1805 Tonnerre”, meant to evoke the smells of the battle of Trafalgar.
      Top: lime, smoke and gunpowder;
      Mid: blood, brandy and sea water;
Base: amber, balsam fir and cedar

Not everyone is crazy about the blood smell. Not even me. :^[

From the same house, “Vi et Armis”
      Top: black pepper, tea leaf and cardamom;
      Mid: whiskey, incense and opium;
      Base: tobacco, birch and oud.

I thought it unwearable at first but love it now; unfortunately it makes my partner gag (literally) so an FB is some way off.

Dzing! after its initial bast of wild, settles down to vanilla and old library books on me. It would be a not too scary choice. Cuir Mauresque or Leather Oud might be a (crack!) bit more off putting.

I am compromising. I’m going with Carnal Flower, applied very lightly, hours before the meet. I am not trying to ditch the man. He may be wonderful! CF is feminine, and I tend to come across less girly than I’d like. It’s also a good test–if he hates it, that tells me something.

Thanks for the pre-date giggles, NST. Be well.

OMG, I passed by Yves Rocher and was intrigued by the new limited edition Clémentine et Epices hand cream, and it is AMAZING. (It’s not the most moisturizing, but it smells SO GOOD.) Now I wish I had also gotten the shower gel.

So I smell like that right now, now that it has totally overridden the Diorissimo that I had on before.

    Happy weekend!

The great thing about YR is that it’s all so cheap that it’s free in perfumista world! I feel like it’s ok to blind buy this one :) I don’t know if they are going to make a perfume out of this, but I’m happy with it as body products.

I’ve tried all 3. Both flankers are quite true to the original, with just a little adjusting. Spice is spicier, Rose is greener (but not rosier.) I particularly like Spice but I had a hard time finding any, and ended up with a bottle of Rose since it’s ubiquitous and really inexpensive. I wore it a ton this summer.

Rainy and cool. One of those days where the husband’s mood will depend on who wins the football game he’s watching right now. Taking advantage of his couch time by coloring my hair. Will decide fragrance after that, but I’m thinking that the Coromandel decant I just got in the splitmeet is calling my name! If not today, definitely tomorrow.

Changed my mind after color done and showered. I had never tried the Adam Levine I blind bought last year at TJ Maxx. Seemed like as good a day as any. It’s going quite nicely with the scented candle we have going, which is black pepper and tobacco. One thing I love about colder weather is pulling out the candles.

Yesterday on the train, I had someone encroaching on my space and I mentioned that I have a Puffy Coat story. It’s cold and rainy in NYC today and I wore my Uniqlo Down Puffy Coat (but it’s the slim version) and think it’s timely to share the story —

A few winters back on a train commute into NYC, I sat next to the window on a 3-seater and a skinny woman half my size sat on the aisle seat. As the train filled up, only middle seats were available. At one of the stops, a Rubenesque+ woman wearing a puffy coat asked to sit in the middle and the skinny one got up. The woman then proceeded to plop down on the middle seat, leaving about 5 inches for the skinny one who tried without success to fit herself in her original seat but to no avail and she gave up. The one in the middle seat then turns to me and conspirationally whispers “It’s the puffy coat!”

When I commuted via train, I would have to sit next to Mr. I-eat-curry-every-day-and-my-perspiration-smells-like-it.

Nothing against him or his diet – Septa never allocated enough cars and the one next to him would be the only available seat.

Thank God I started driving before the proliferation of cell phones. I know I would NOT be able to hold my tongue. LOL

I’m wearing Mazzolari Vetiver this morning–AnnE introduced me to it. As I have mentioned before, it’s the only vetiver that doesn’t smell like poisoned roots to me. This week Fumerie is having a Profumum Roma event so I expect my wallet to take a hit. Their Acqua Viva is the best lemon ever and their ambers are swoon-worthy. I think they will be presenting the whole line, and there are lots I haven’t smelled yet.

I know, it doesn’t last long on me, either, but better than other lemons. I don’t think the citrus molecules hang around long (a chemist might know why) and that’s why they’re mostly used in top notes.

Infusion d’Iris is considerably more floral; Hiris smells like iris and damp greenery and purling mists, and it smells “clean” to me in the way that all iris perfumes, no matter how rooty and weird, smell clean — like a soft breeze across a calm sea.

Today I’m trying Demeter Saffron (kindly gifted to me through he swapmeet). I’m getting curry, with a faint undercurrent of honey and leather. It’s interesting. I can’t see myself wearing it alone, but I imagine it would work well as a layering element (e.g., with a rose scent), so I will have to experiment…

No, guys! It’s really not bad! I haven’t smelled a lot of saffron, but I think the scent is pretty true. I just wouldn’t wear it alone as a perfume.

I just git to try it, too, thanks to a generous swapper who added a sample. I had pretty much that exact impression and thought it might layer well with a rose or something woody.

Yes! I layered it with some Stella McCartney afterward, and it was quite nice. It accentuated the amber and spiced it up a bit.

I am not at home in Houston but up in Michigan visiting my mom and the smells of fresh clean air and burning leaves are fabulous. She bought home-made yeast cinnamon rolls with a maple icing from a friend, and they are to die for! I have lately been wearing YSL Paris, the original, which I had somehow missed out on before, and really loving it. It’s so femme and gentle.

I do have a question: Does anyone have or like any of the Zoology scents? I am thinking of buying a sample set. Recommendations? They sound peculiar and intriguing.

I sampled bat by spilling a 1 ml vial on myself – and it was an experience. It was almost too strong (but I did spill it), but the development was complex, the notes were interesting and well blended, and the name was actually applied to the fragrance. I vote you try them.

I agree, I’m going to order that sample set. I have a sample of Bat, and I really like it, even though I was totally prepared to hate it. SS’s review above is right on the money: “well-blended, interesting complex in development”. There was a review the other day of a couple of the new scents on Perfume Posse, but I can’t remember if they are available yet. And virtually free via Perfume Math.

My goodness – it’s been awhile. Figured I’d check in since it’s my birthday and I have a bit of a breather from schoolwork (no homework right after midterms).

This weekend has gorgeous weather! Last night’s birthday party was perfect – outdoors with a small camp fire and a piñata, surrounded by other female grad students (half of whom are engineering majors!), with a bottle of dessert wine and s’mores. Oh, and the homemade Tiramisu cake had trick candles that took me 10 minutes to blow out. :)

Looking forward to today’s Halloween party with the same group. Mmm…homemade pumpkin pie and I’ll be making brownies! Just hope I’ll have enough time to assemble a costume.

Since it’s my birthday of course I’m wearing my favorite – vintage Shalimar EdC (thanks Foxbins!)

My birthday wish is for all of you to have a fun weekend!

This morning I was lollygagging around the house, tidying and shifting things, when I noticed my little decant of Cologne du 68 was looking neglected. I tell myself it’s not pushing enough of the right buttons to buy a bottle, but then I go back to it and it makes me smile. Maybe when the decant is empty I’ll make a decision.

In honor of SublimiSomnium’s birthday I’ve added Vanille Galante to my fragrant mix for the day. It smells delicious, but not like food, a delicate balance that I love.

Now it’s time for more lollygagging, futzing about, and muzzy-headed bone-idleness. Enjoy your weekend, NST!

Robyn posted it under new releases, but with no comments allowed.

What I can’t figure out is how they released it within days of the comment. Did they have a fragrance lined up and ready to release just waiting for something along those lines to be said? Even if that were the case (and presumably it had to be?) they sure got it printed and packaged quickly.

SOTD = Lune Feline and I am sooooo in love!! If I could take a bath in this stuff I probably would, neighbors and small animals caught downwind be damned. It’s gorgeous! The price isn’t so gorgeous, however, and I am already dreading when my decant is empty, which probably won’t be too far away.

Fellow perfumista/os, I have kind of been living under a rock lately with some everyday life issues hugely distracting my perfume life, but can someone tell me how the hell I managed to miss notification Lea St. Barth’s Lea was not only being discontinued, but there doesn’t appear to be a single backup bottle to be found anywhere? I still have a mostly full bottle and one of the Extreme version, but I adore this stuff and can’t imagine my perfume wardrobe without it.

What happened? Are they hopefully reformulating and then re-releasing it? Is there anywhere I can still find some? *desperate, stunned and horrified at never having it again* It’s a cult classic and the discontinuation is like… Like my having to live without Angel or Chinatown! I feel faint at the very idea…

    Thanks.

Morning, all. I’m still in bed, which is both lazy and silly, considering I need to iron, pack, clean, transfer $$$ to the cats’ caregiver, etc….I’ve been playing with perfume to decide what to take on holiday and the result of my experimentation is that Dakkie and Isabella have taken themselves off to the spare room and the dear man has compared me unfavourably to an in-season civet cat. He’s a calm man, almost stoical usually, but he used some Kiwi vernacular that I had forgotten! Oh dear. A shower, then and immediately! However, a decision has been decided, so it was worth it. I’m going to take all my Chanel samples, so I’ll have Misia and 22 for date nights, Sycamore for car trips, Eau Premiere and Beige for city walks, and so on. That works! And of course, I aim to buy a little, so towards the end of our trip, I will likely have Hermes for some deeper variety.

    Hey, be well, all.

Just relaxing, having finished a salmon burger I made for dinner-new recipe I tried from the NYTimes. Not bad, not very memorable either. Watching Jaws now. Guess you’d call it a fish-themed might.

I’m currently testing Artemisia by Penhaligon, mainly because I was drawn in by the packaging. An unusual scent, definitely musk-centered but I smell the violet, just not sure what else.
It’s got very good lasting power.. soft & soothing.

The hotel I stayed at in Seattle recently had a very nice aroma rather like sandalwood. It was subtle and very nice, far better than so many of the overbearing woody notes in perfumes these days. I asked but although the people at the desk knew that something was being used to scent the lobby, they didn’t know what it was.

Commando today, and its a good thing. We turned on the heat for the first time since we bought our house in July, and someone has SCENTED THE HEAT. The previous owner was fond of scented home products. It smells to me like those packets of wax beads that all the home improvement stores carried about 5 years ago to put in your vacuum cleaner; one of them was a woody oriental that I actually bought once. But where would you dump those beads in a heating system? Our ductwork is recent, and it’s that plastic flexible stuff. Guess I’ll just have to wait it out. Bother.

See hajusuuri’s comment up above somewhere…..I am pretty sure she made a comparison….

and others have said there is no change in longevity which makes me wonder why they upped the price ???

Sunday! On my way to spin class sporting Corsica Furiosa, but will change to something more “weather appropriate” after shower. Another glorious day in the swamps!

I will be making caramel apples today and can’t wait to sample them????

Hoping you all have a fragrant and relaxing Sunday ????

Another dark blustery day here in Montreal, but at least the rain has stopped. The park is a carpet of yellow leaves with all the wind, it’s pretty. Cozied up in Tauer Incense Rosé.

What is that sparkly note? Fragrantica says there’s bergamot in IR; might it be that?

I think there might be a bit of aldehydes in there.

I had a nice time time sniffing this weekend at Sniffapalooza with Hajusuuri and Ihadanidea. Out of everything I smelled, and it’s too much to list, there are 2 things I’m lemming: Slumberhouse Ore-really love the deep, dry cocoa note, and Chanel Egoiste EDT which I’ve never given skin time before. I think I like it better that Bois des Iles which I like, but the aldehydes sometimes make it feel a bit harsh.

And I added some new things to my swap list, mostly newly obtained maufac samples.

I’ll have to give Egoiste a sniff. I do love BdI but there is always room for another sandalwood. Glad you had fun!

It’s a little less dry to me, slightly sweeter. Also smells pretty unisex. It’s worth a sniff.

Cocoa note you say? I’m there.
Glad it was a fun time with our smelly friends.

Have you tried the Lush Soft Couer massage bar? It’s a small heart-shaped one and it’s cocoa deliciousness. I use it as lotion.

I’ve only given a few serious skin time. I think ore might be my favorite of the ones I’ve tried.

I am sampling Geisha Noire in the oil form. It is gorgeous, and I can’t stop sniffing my wrist. I checked on the price of the perfume, and it is relatively reasonable, so if this continues, it may go on my FB list.

Just tried Geisha Rouge and it is lovely as well. More clove, I think. It will be hard to choose between the two.

Craving rose today, and the one that hit the spot is Guerlain Rose Nacrée du desert. Really like it on fall days but the sample is almost empty.
Anyone know a perfume that is like it but maybe not as expensive or impossible to get?

Ok so I just looked online and discounters have it at a less extreme price. I don’t love it enough for a full bottle though.

I found myself in the same conundrum and happened upon an ebay store selling carded samples for like $2-3, so you might check there. (I bought 15 or so – hopefully they won’t evaporate too quickly!) Someone also had a decant up for swap at the swapmeet.

Thanks for posting this – it really made me crave it so I’m wearing it now. I’m sick and my sense of smell is compromised, but I can definitely smell it – divine…

Back in the airport (where I seem to live, sometimes). SOTD is SL “Ambre Sultan”, which is hovering politely in the background when I would rather it a bit further forward.

Sniffed a few Pradas in Duty Free. The men’s Amber Intense had too much soapiness for me, so I preferred the women’s Amber, but neither cried out to be explored further. The Tom Ford stand had the new green set in, but no testers and at £116 for the small bottles I am not buying blind.

Should have mentioned, I started the day before showering in CSP “Amour de Cacao”, and given I was feeling pretty bleurgh it was quite nice to crawl about the house smelling like a chocolate vanilla sponge. :^)

The Cubs are in the World Series, Chelsea thumped Man U, and I’m wearing Mitsouko. This Sunday is off to a great start. …It would only be better if my back hadn’t decided to act up. Eh, what are ya gonna do?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everybody!

Today I wore a raspberry-colored top and instinctively wore a fragrance that, if it were a color, would be a deep raspberry-magenta: CK Deep Euphoria. (I mean, look at the bottle.) It just seemed natural to color-code my clothing with my scent today, then I was surprised I did it. Does anyone else match scents with the color they’re wearing?

Swaps are starting to trickle in and my perfume corner is an embarrassment of riches! Have been testing things all weekend and the biggest surprise has been SL Chergui. I don’t know what I expected – actually I had really low expectations because I’ve not particularly loved most SL I’ve tried – but delicious wood pudding wasn’t it. So yummy! I’ll be wearing it a lot this fall/winter.

      Chergui is a brilliant scent.
I too am enjoying the packages arriving almost daily.
Today was Alahine which is one of the most beautiful ambers I’ve tried to date. Grateful for swap meet!

Wearing my second newly swapped decant, Masque Milano Russian Tea which is stronger than anticipated, and also seems to be a bit shimmery-changing between tea and spice, and something else maybe aldehydic/mysterious?
