Friday scent of the day 10/14

Posted by Robin on 14 October 2016 410 Comments

etro-bo-2s

Happy Friday, and happy World Standards Day! Our community project for today: wear one of your Top 10 of Fall fragrances.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Etro Shaal Nur, from Erin's Top 10 of Fall 2009. Erin says "...Shaal Nur smells both exotic and comfortable, and despite supposedly being named after an Indian princess, it feels unisex and very, very French." Yep!

Reminder: 10/21 will be Trick Friday — wear a fragrance that smells entirely different from its name (or feel free to interpret "trick" in some other way). Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: detail from Etro Blue Oriental Scarf (wool and silk), $330 at Etro.

Mitsouko. Of course, I can and do wear it in other seasons, but something in this perfume smells of autumn to me. In terms of colours I would describe it as golden but still slightly green – kind of like autumn leaves.

I layer that one a lot. Probably will wear tomorrow, but didn’t think I better wear to work today. It is pretty strong, in my opinion, if working close to others.

      You smell wonderful.

Are you wearing vintage or a current one? I have a bottle from the late 80s/early 90s that is getting low and so I have been scouring eBay for vintage. It is fairly plentiful and about the same cost-wise as the current. I briefly sniffed the current a week or two ago and it seemed sharper but I only sprayed it on paper.

It is the current version. Not the same as vintage, but I enjoy it in its present state too.

FM’s Dreis van Noten – I am not sure if it is fall exactly but I tend not to wear it in warmer weather. Someone said it smells like waffles which seems nice although I don’t get it myself. Waffles should not offend scent police too much :)

My forever go-to fall scent: Yves Rocher Homme Nature Millenaire (from 2000, as the name suggests). Dry leaves, spices, humus, slightly decaying wood: it’s the smell of autumn in a bottle and it’s genuinely great. If a bigger house had launched it you’d still be able to buy it and it would be acclaimed as a classic, a staple of men’s perfumery.

The whole Secrets d’Essences line is high-quality (though I haven’t tried the last couple). I just wish YR didn’t discontinue everything: there isn’t a single scent in their line that was in production twenty years ago. They used to have a whole lot of great men’s scents — Aztek, Samarkande, Trimaran, Tel Quel, all gone.

If we get to vote, I say Cantate for women (cinnamon-caramel floral oriental) and Aztek for men (spicy tarragon-lavender fougère). Although really I’d settle for almost any of their mid-eighties through mid-nineties output.

Hi, Almost twin! I’m wearing my forever go-to fall scent, the women’s version of YR Nature Millenaire. As a woman who prefers woods and spice to most florals, especially in the fall, I adore this one. I still have the catalog page from all those years ago that lists NM as a “woody, spicy scent, with scents of earth, bergamot orange, cardamom, coriander, cinnamon bark, cedarwood, incense, myrrh, and benzoin.”. Yes, it’s all about the earth, soft wood and tender roots and your description is apt; the women’s version is not that different from the men’s. I paid $10.95 for my bottle and, luckily, I have a back up. Otherwise, if you can even it on evil bay, it’s 10x more.

Yes, YR has had some great fragrances that they d/c all too quickly. I also love the Voile d’Ambre for fall and the Rose Absolue with its soft but haunting cinnamon trail, also d/c. (And, yes, I have back up bottles of these, too.)

EDT…..I have a huge bottle of it…limited edition that I think might have been 10 oz??? There is about 20 ml left….I also have an EDT spray…..I wish I would have bought the perfume in the 1980s when it first came out….must have been gorgeous! It is probably the closest thing to a signature scent as it has been with me since 1983 and I cannot even count on two hands how many bottles I have drained over the years….only vintage, though….don’t know what the re-formulation smells like…do you?

SL Santal Majuscule, courtesy of a generous NSTer. It’s a breathe of fall- just a favorite cozy scarf before coat weather. I haven’t been a perfumista long enough to have a favorite list, but I’m so glad to have some of this.

I’ve missed reading the posts. It’s been a challenging week. I’ve had some unsettling post operative sensory symptoms and also feel like something is not quite right functionally. No one wants to really address my concerns. My exam is ok compared to a minimal baseline, and they use that measure instead of measuring me against my baseline. Since I’m in the health care field, it’s quite frustrating! Hopefully, I am an aberration, and it will just resolve.

Hello NST – I seem to have had a bit of an uninspired perfume time of late but a present of No5 EDP from my husband has really helped.

I’ve enjoyed reading but haven’t felt I had much to add (plus work has been rather intense) but feeling revitalised today and thought I’d take part.

Appropriately FdB today – it feel right for a long work day but whispers to me of freedom in autumn forests, a good antidote to a long week.

Well, I definitely would have worn Stash today, as my favorite fall fragrance, but the Office Perfume Grinch’s nose might spontaneously combusted (not to mention his mood). LOL

Here is a pic of the Office Perfume Grinch, wearing a mask a few years back, when the housekeeper was mopping with a fragrant floral floor cleaner. (Fabuloso?) This is what I have to deal with on a daily basis! :) https://www.instagram.com/p/BLi8QZOA0DJ/?taken-by=jadainga99

I remember when I smelled it on a mag test strip when it came out too. I just was instantly smitten and coveted a bottle for years. I can’t remember why I was not able to buy a bottle at the time, but I never forgot how good I thought it smelled. And I made up for lost time about 4 years ago when I finally broke down a bought a bottle.

I have so many Fall favorites, but I was feeling chocolate today so I went with the rosy, peachy chocolate of HdP 1969 layered over Lush Soft Couer(sp?) massage bar. On its own it is cocoa and honey. Together, it’s deliciousness!

I do. A couple of swipes on my arms and then rub it in. I have a couple of them-the one that smells like Lust, and the Rose Jam scented one. They’re pretty oily so I use them more in cold weather.

SOTD is Cale Fargranze d’Autore “Fulgor”. This was, in retrospect, a poor choice for Autumn as it’s all about green leaves, soil and stone. Perhaps that might be evocative in Spring, but in Autumn it just smells bitter and melancholy.

    Top: tangerine, fig leaf and cassis;
    Mid: narcissus, saffron and magnolia;
    Base: patchouli, amber and incense.

Its lasting powers are middling, so I’ll swap to a better SOTE later. Flying tonight to Wroclaw in Poland to meet some people i worked with on my last programme.

I’m in Amouage Ubar. It brightens up even the gloomiest day. Works better in cooler temperatures than in the heat of summer, so I take it out of its cage more often and parade it down the street like my pet tiger.

It’s just so powerful! And I think it has a “cat” note. Maybe that’s what civet is, I’m not very good at getting separate notes out of the whole, but yeah, that’s the impression I get. I need to steel myself every time before spraying it.

SotD = Ambre Narguile. Yummy. Missed you perfume peeps this week!

I’ve woken from a scentless nightmare, a fragrance-less fever dream that began on Sunday. A zombie virus invaded and took control. All perfumes made me shudder. I recoiled in horror from the wispy, faded scent on a sleeve of my dressing gown. A musky red rose in my garden made me shake, sweat, and cower. It is . . . flu season. Gah.

Happy Friday, fragrance folks. Be alert, be well, and be fragranced!

    Happy (typhoon) Friday!

    1) In Jo Malone’s Dark Amber and Ginger Lily. This is a favorite of mine year round BUT especially now- the creamy soft amber+pepper+hint of floral sweetness really does the trick. This layers well, perfect for scarf+sweater weather, and also for playing with other scents (it comes in a body oil and a scent).

    2) We are getting remnants of a typhoon here in the PDX Area, so lots of warmish wind, rain and thunder. I am hunkering down – will be doing sketches for interior design, taking the sauna at the local gym, and drinking lots of tea!

    I am wearing PoaL today.

I am also compulsively sniffing Chanel No 5 L’Eau I sprayed on a card at lunchtime yesterday. I left it on my desk overnight and my office smelled lovely this morning.

I wonder how close it is to Premiere. I have shall to do a side by side to see if I need both. This one seems to have oomph on paper at least…didn’t try on skin.

I asked the SA for a sample and she looked at me like I had three heads. Such stinginess and high-handed attitude with samples nowadays yet they are in abundance being sold on eBay…go figure… ;)

I think one of the reasons SAs are so stingy is people getting the samples and reselling them on eBay!!!
I was at Cartier a few months ago and I wanted to get samples of some of their frags – I mean those things are expensive and just buying one on the spot makes no sense. The answer was ‘oh we do not have samples’ – which was very bizarre to me, as again, their fragrances are not cheap and they are not returnable. I actually carry a bunch of little bottles with me, so I asked if I could decant some into a bottle – the SA literally was counting how many sprays I was putting into my tiny 1 ml vial. This pretty much killed any interest I had in the line.

I can’t wrap my head around this attitude. It’s like waving a tube of lipstick at someone and expecting to make a sale without letting them try it on. Samples are the best way to ensure future sales, and if manufacturers don’t have their own on hand to promote a product, they should make one by hand for you. The excuses some of these perfume counters come up with are mind-boggling.

I agree with everyone ^. To me, they are “kissing cousins.” Imo, Eau Premiere is closer to No 5. L’Eau is a floral abstract of No. 5 and I really like it.

“Floral abstract” is my experience with it, too. I don’t really notice the florals in the original iterations, and L’eau smells like they brought them to the forefront. I don’t really get a strong connection to the original until the deep drydown (like 6-8 hours in) and then it smells like the No 5 I know and love.

I’ve not spent much time with Eau Premiere so I can’t speak to it.

I wore Coromandel yesterday and a teacher came in and said, “This library always smells so wonderful, I just love coming in here. It must be your tea.” Maybe I overdid it, so I said, “It’s really good tea.”

:) I get compliments on Coromandel as well. And it’s always a pleasure to hear that other people out there in the world appreciate smelling something wonderful (as so few seem to these days, what with perfume-free zones et al.)

Yes, we have others on staff who think that wearing perfume is akin to child abuse, so I don’t always admit that it’s me, not the tea.

My list of #1 fall fragrances is really long :) – of course it has ambers and leather and smoke. Upon much thought (and I am tired of all the thinking about what my number is), I would have to nominate Rania J Ambre Loup.
I hope this house is not a one hit wonder. I tried the rest of the line up and was not impressed – some were nice, but not as mind blowing as AL.
Looking forward to the swap meet tomorrow. Hoping to finalize the long list of treasures looking for new home tonight :)

If you love it, it doesn’t matter at all how much smelling it enraged me. (I should have known better, anyway.) Coco is beautiful, and I keep forgetting to try Rush. The next time I’m at Sephora, they will no doubt have stopped carrying it.

SOTD is FM Dries Van Noten.

I haven’t been wearing scent much this week. On Sunday night, we had to say goodbye to our sweet kitty Miss Girl. It was very unexpected, she had congestive heart failure and there was nothing we could do. She was only three but I’m glad we got to spend the last two years cuddling with and taking care of her.

It does seem like a lot of us have been having a tough week. I hope the rest of everyone’s fall goes better.

It’s never really fall here (the joke is that we have two seasons: southern summer and northern summer), but I do have some fall favorites: Coromandel, Champagne de Bois, Parfum Sacre. I picked Mary Greenwell Plum today, a modern chypre seems just right for “fall.”

I chose L’Air d’Rien, Miller Harris, which is definitely one of my all time top 10, and particularly good in the Autumn, it can make me feel a bit queasy in warm weather. It’s also one of the first perfumes that really intrigued me as a budding perfumista.

Swoon! Someone sent me a sample of this and I was repulsed the first time I tried it. I tried it again when a freebie meet came around and I was going to send it off and it was a total 180 experience. But I tend to not wear it to work because it does seem polarizing.

Well, SOTD was to be SL Chergui, but at the last moment I swerved to Lalique’s Encres Noire (the men’s version). It amazes me I enjoy this as much as I do, synthetic bomb that it is, but I do. There’s a lush dryness to it, and a weird, sinus-clearing effect, but it’s also empowering. Perfect for cleaning out the garage in preparation for a neighborhood tag sale. I smell very can-do!

Late to the party as usual. Since I have not read any of the comments yet, I am going to make a prediction that we have at least 5 people who chose Coromandel to wear today, which is my SOTD.

So this week has got to be full moon week because people had been coming out of the woodwork with the strangest questions and/or behavior. There’s another major work event this weekend but thank goodness our work depends upon successful completion of hundreds of other activities and we’re not required to be on standby to immediately begin our part; we start fresh on Monday morning.

I may list a few things for the Swapmeet but will make it more like a reverse swapmeet as I have speicific perfumes I am looking for and I know some of you have FBs ;-)

I am going to Sniffapalooza next Saturday and wilml also likely go to Twisted Lily on Friday night (also part of Sniffa).. In the past, there was a good discount on that day’s purchases. If you are interested in splitting something available from there and are willing to take half (or be responsible for finding takers to make up half), send me an email and we may be able to work something out.

I will complete all the Splitmeet stuff this weekend as I received the Hermes goodies yesterday..

Now onto reading about your fragrant day!

      Have a great weekend.
That Friday night event is always so lively – unfortunately not ready to galavant next weekend.

So late today. I wore a Rose Boheme from PPC this morning and now I am wearing Bruno Acampora’s Sballo. It’s one of my HG fragrances but guess that most people aren’t aware of it since it’s been around since the 70s.

I didn’t really get a chance to comment yesterday, so I just wanted to say I’m sorry about the sad news about your colleague.

Once again wearing Eau de 1000. My winter wear version is only an edt (seems quite strong), but for fall this “eau” is perfect.

I’m in Hermes Vetiver Tonka. It was underwhelming the first time I tried it, but was much improved when sprayed liberally. The hazelnut comes through much more, for one thing. It’s a shame I can’t afford a whole vat of it. (Now I’m wondering if I posted pretty much this same thing recently for another Friday challenge. Apologies if so.)

I always think of Shaal Nur as a perfect summer perfume. I’ll have to try it in cooler weather and see if it wears differently.

Wishing you had a full vat of Vetiver Tonka could surely cover more than one Friday project!

And I think of Shaal Nur as spring. We all make our own categories :-)
