Friday scent of the day 7/8

Posted by Robin on 8 July 2016 266 Comments

Pantone lemon zest

Friday is here! Our community project for today: wear a citrus cologne, classic or modern.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Carthusia Mediterraneo (perfect for today's "excessive heat warning") over Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil.

Reminder: on 7/15, wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I really thought I had only one citrus cologne, Eau Sauvage, but then I remembered my mini of Fendi Life Essence, one of so many great scents from that house that they threw away. It doesn’t actually have any lemon in it — the top is mostly bergamot — but the opening makes me think of a frosty glass of lemonade.

      Sounds perfect!

Fendi is a weird case — their newer scents have all fizzled too.

Wasn’t Life Essence great? I have a bottle as well and it wears nicely in the heat!

It was made for the heat, no question. Some perfumer was definitely thinking “Late July on the Amalfi coast”.

I’m not participating this time, as I’m still in Riga and our delegation had a meeting with the Prime Minister this morning. I would usually wear Rue Cambon for something like that, but wore Shangri La as an alternative this time (because I have a travel spray of it). Worked beautifully.

I’m going to have a spa treatment now, before a short sailing trip. Still tired, as we started the day very early, but Riga is lovely as always.

Been thinking about you and your work. The NewsHour (our public tv news on PBS) did an excellent piece yesterday on Narva. Respecting the NST moratorium on political chat here… So will only add that such stories are a great way to explain to Americans about the role of NATO.

Glad you will get some R & R!

    Happy Friday beautiful smelling people.
I am in Providence Co Tabac Citron: citrus, smokey and powdery.

Still listening to Bob Marley today, I put my monkey in a Jamaican t-shirt that a friend gave us with the words “one love” and with sneakers on, looked like the little monkey was ready to race Usain Bolt.

Scent twins, Robin! I dug out the Carthusia samples and find the scents quite lovely for summer, although fleeting . Does the lemon tea scent last longer over the Tauer oil? I also like the Fiori di Capri, which is a floral but has some citrus notes.

I think the oil (and truthfully, probably any oil, but this one smells lovely) makes anything last longer. But I like to reapply CM anyway, the top notes are so perfect.

Started the day with Cabanel Meloe, one of the many samples I brought. I think it is nice enough, reminds me a tiny bit of l’Eau D’Issey (former lifetime ????) and moved on to JM Basil, Lime and Mandarin. I need a bit of bracing bitterness in a hot day cologne, JM does the trick.

Yep, you said the exact sentiment. The best neroli, bergamot, and petitgrain they could get their hands on, no doubt. And I think it somehow avoids the rough mossy or rustic herbal notes. It becomes very polished with just musks, but I wish it were a little more…unexpected.

Coincidentally, I was reading yesterday that one of the church’s that inspired the nursery rhyme ‘Oranges & Lemons’ is at risk, and has just been given a heritage grant.
It’s such a fascinating rhyme, and tell’s us so much of Londons history, of the London guilds, churches, and the grissly workings of Newgate prison!

Not sure it’s cheating, as I consider it more of a fig than a citrus (although there’s that grapefruit top note), but I will spritz on some Fico di Amalfi Blu Medditerreneo before the gym this morning. FdA has become my go-to summer gym scent. It smells clean, doens’t project too far, and helps “filter” out some of the other scents of the gym! (More polite and practical than a paper face mask. :D )

I am not participating and, in fact, is probably as far from today’s team as I could get with Ore by Slumberhouse. It turned out to be kind of a blind buy for me, because the sample I had was really much closer to Bayleys or whatever it is spelled, but the bottle from Ebay turned out to be quite different and breathtakingly gorgeous with some “dirt” and grit and smokiness layered over. I still don’t know what happened, but it was quite a piece of luck that I decided to buy it at all.

I started the day trying Orange Sanguine – it’s certainly orange! However, it only lasted about an hour on my skin. I’m now wearing Gris Clair because after reading the news, I needed peaceful lavender churchy goodness. I’m now going to clean out my closet and plant some flowers so I can feel a little more grounded in a world that seems too chaotic.

I’m wearing it today too and it’s winter where I live. It brings some of the brightness of a cologne to a winter setting, but of course being Shalimar, it does not blow off in an hour like a true cologne might. I think it’s very versatile.

It’s been in Australia for while now, 12 months or so perhaps. It worries me a bit that Guerlain seems to be pushing Shalimar Souffle more than the Cologne. Sooffle is much less interestng, I think. :(

Now reading your post I am debating if I should give it another chance. My initial impression was ‘why bother’ but that was on paper – and I heard Ateliers should be tried on skin.

Hot, hot, hot! Attempting to stay calm, cool, and collected (in every sense) with abundant spritzes of Hermés Tonka Vanille.
No clue if it qualifies for the citrus cologne tag today, but it’s calling me and I MUST answer!

I’m needing some beauty that’s manufactured by a human being in a few to frets effort o remember we’re not all crazy, and that in fact, most of us folks are generous, kind, and accepting. Sometimes I lose sight of that.

Bottega Veneta Essence Aromatique – not sure if it counts as a citrus cologne, but I read about the limey-bergamot opening and decided to try it. That opening doesn’t last long though. I’m getting lots of patchouli, which is fine with me as I’ve been in the mood for woods and patchouli even though it’s very hot!

What a crappy, nasty week in the USA. Dear Lord.

After an hour of kickboxing and then recovery with a cafe au lait and a cinnamon twist donut, I put on the wonderful Eau Universalle, straight from the fridge and sprayed rather lavishly all over. It’s citrus-y and herbally. I then added some Jour d’Hermes Absolue on the wrists. Very clean and very fresh, much needed.

I thought Eau de Minimes for today but since I typically use it as a linen spray I thought it might remind me of a pillowcase and make me sleepy. So, SotD is Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilique, accompanied by some cold lime- and basil-infused water in my water bottle.

Cool, calm, compassionate thoughts to all.

In L’Occitane’s Grapefruit and Rhubarb edt (from the Pierre Hermé collection)… Lasts a ridiculously short time before turning into a muted skin scent. But while it lasts it is very pretty. For those who like the idea of grapefruit but shun the sulfur/urine notes of some popular grapefruit scents, you might want to try this one–also if you don’t mind its longevity issues…

Well… it’s interesting. Through some magic of poor planning, in both 1967 and then 2014, when our unit renovated, my office became the hottest room in the entire hospital complex. The facilities guy regularly comes with a laser “gun” and reads the ambient temp and then frowns and goes up to the roof, supposedly to do something about it. On Wednesday, the gun said it was 33 C / 92 f in my office. The heat makes me very popular in winter, and sometimes people come by in the summer, just to marvel that they’ve never been able to fix it.

Sitting in a parking garage in downtown Austin, wondering why I’m drinking more water when there aren’t any public restrooms nearby (and hoping I don’t look suspicious loitering here). My husband has a job interview and didn’t want to have to hike several blocks in a suit, so I’m acting as chauffeur. I needed the spine-stiffening of Chanel, so have worn a dab of No 5 and a hefty misting of CdR, which puts me about as far from citrus cologne as possible. I’m pretty sure I’m more nervous than is necessary, but this interview is with an entity that’s notoriously hard to get in with and he is meeting with the hiring manager and two department heads.

SOTD is 4711 Original Eau de Cologne. After yesterday’s storms the humidity was 100% this morning, so I showered with the 4711 soap and generously spritzed the cologne for a very welcome brisk and refreshing start to the day. I actually inherited several sets of this from my SIL upon her MIL’s passing several years ago and used it for the first time today. The MIL was originally from Germany and a delightful lady I’d met several times, so today’s community project was a nice opportunity to remember her.

The weather is to clear up as the day progresses, so for tonight’s concert in the park I’ll be wearing what I think of as the nighttime version of a refreshing edc, AG Les Nuits d’Hadrien, a favorite of mine to wear under starry summer skies amidst fireflies and lovely music.

Robin, I love Mediterraneo. In my opinion, it is a perfect citrus scent. I finally bought a full bottle only yesterday! Although I have never tried to layer it with something rosy, I believe it should work very well with a rose body oil (especially if it is from Tauer).

I like all 3 in the line and I think I like Ma Bette the most as well – although I expected to like Night Flower based on the notes. I do not really see myself getting a FB bottle. Honestly I expected more given the lineage of the founder and names behind it. I think if I came across it a couple of years ago, I would have bought it, but I am wiser now (and more picky)

Wearing Mary Greenwell Lemon. I had to look around to find something that fit the theme today. I think I need to buy a couple more citrus scents (or at least get a bunch of samples with citrus notes) to round out my collection. I do like citrus.

Quick PSA – Luckyscent now has some of Neela Vermeire fragrances in smaller size (take two, 15 ml each). Was wondering if anyone is interested in splitting – I do not need two little bottles of either Pichola or Bombay Bling, but could use one :) I hope posting this is OK, Robin. Rainy and overcast here in the PacNW (now THERE’S a surprise) spirits lifted with healthy lashings of TF’s Fleur De Portofino, probably the least popular of the flankers, but the floral just lifts it right up for me! Overcast and grey this morning (again), so went with Azemour Les Oranges, wonderful stuff, I find it invigorating and comforting, a good all year perfume I think.
My travel spray of chasse une Pappillon arrived this afternoon, so wearing that now, and loving it, I see a FB in my future.
There are so many L’Artisans I’ve yet to try, such fun.
Looking forward to spending some time with my wonderful little bags of samples from the kind and incredibly generous AnnE this weekend, I have really been enjoying looking them up on Fragrantica, and taking notes (I really adore Taif so far, and absolutely love love love vintage Yvresse) and my neighbour has fallen for Rossy de Palma, after smelling it on me) Thanks again Ann!

Don’t have much citrus or cologne with me so wearing Costarela again, which sort of fits.

A quick question. Is there a good site that does the ‘if you like this, smell this’ thing. I know eaumg does it for the perfumes she reviews and it happens a bit on fragrantica, but wondering if I am missing anything else. I was testing Ma Bête last night, really liking it, but also thinking it smell a lot like . . . brain freeze.

    Thanks!

Amy, I thought the same thing about Ma Bete, but I wasn’t sure if it was due to the fragrance itself or the retro style. I often look at the Michael Edwards fragrance finder, but the suggestions there for similar perfumes to this one are waaaay off, imo.

I wore AG Eau du Sud and Ninfeo Mio earlier in the week and was planning to wear Astier de Villatte Eau Chic today but was diverted by a sudden craving for Nishane Musiqa Oud. To me it has a sort of dark chocolate aura that is dry rather than sweet, with a hint of saffron. However, neither of these appear in the notes.

All week I’ve been having fun spraying myself with citrus cologne samples I have unaccountably collected (I am not a fan) and kvetching about the inevitable results. I am rating them on how pointless and annoying they are. To add insult to injury, I also calculate how many bottles of the cheap and genuinely lovely citrus cologne “Agua de Colonia Concentrada” I could get for the same price.

SOTD today is Annick Goutal “Eau d’Hadrien”.
Pointlessness factor: 4/5, no staying power.
Annoyance factor: 1/5, this is a beautiful fresh lemon scent and I wish it had shown a bit more backbone.
ACC index: 4.17 – surprised how reasonably priced this one is, I may even longlist it. Such a shame it doesn’t last on my skin.

Morning, all. Last night, every post-teen but pre-considerate party-goer seemed to congregate in our street to yell and giggle and shriek when they fell off the pavement in their high heels….I am sleepless and, as you can see, a little grumpy. So. I have chosen a new perfume sweetie to soften my day, and every time I catch a gorgeous whiff of myself, I smile: perfume magic at work. I am wearing Vanille Galante, one of my new travel set from Hermes, and when the dear man gave me a crafty cuddle just now, he said I smelt delicious. I waited with what I hoped was an encouraging smile to see what might happen next, but he suddenly asked me if I could make him a self-saucing choccy pudding, a childhood favourite. Of course I will, but that’s not the best outcome I could think of for wearing this beautiful perfume…now I need to nip over to the supermarket to buy butter and cocoa. Well, at least I’m trailing clouds of glory!

Wearing my favourite cologne out of all my colognes, Eau de Guerlain. Happiness and sunshine in a bottle. Luca Turin’s review on his late blog persuaded me to try it, and Robin’s review convinced me that I needed it in my wardrobe. I’ve resprayed myself consistently throughout the day.

“It is often hard to notice when something has gone missing. After years of wearing it every day, and even more years of not giving it a thought, I came upon Eau de Guerlain (born 1974) sitting forlorn at the back of a shelf populated by younger heavies. I had forgotten how good it is. Eau de Guerlain is to citrus what the mandolin, with its doubled up strings is to a guitar. …”

The rest of the review is in The Guide, but this part in particular made me realise how strong one’s attachment to a fragrance can be.

    Hola! Checking-in from Barcelona!

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant

Today, we maxed out on Gaudi: La Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila and Casa Battlo. All fabulous! The food, oy! We did not want to eat later like they do here so we’ve had no problems getting in to recommended restaurants. On the perfume front, imagine my excitement when we passed by an Yves Rocher. I had not been able to order Cuir Vetiver online so I beelined to the perfume section and scooped up a 50 mL bottle for the princely sum of €15. I must confess that it was a hajusuuri “large sample” purchase as I wanted to get it no matter what. I may leave it unopened until I get home. My check-in luggage was 40 lbs so it has room to grow!

Oh yes, we happened to pass by a Chanel boutique and since my CE had already evaporated, I wanted to spritz myself with Eau de Cologne. I dashed in, spritzed myself with Eau de Cologne and managed to convince the SA to give me a sample of Boy Chanel. I will wear it during the cruise!

As to my steps goal, I am now up to 38,000 or so. My FitBit got confused with the time and the syncing and gave me credit for 15,000 and change twice. The ~ 38,000 steps is the adjusted number. Anyway, I am confident I’ll get to the first goal (200,000 steps) but really really want to get to my extra 50,000 stretch goal.

Stay tuned for my next update!

Hey Gabriela! I wish I paid more attention…I did not realize you live in Barcelona or I would have tried to meet a fellow perfumista!

With Chanel, I just made it sound like I knew what I was talking a out with my favorites in the line. Also, having just spritzed myself with Eau de Cologne, how could I possibly give justice to wearing Boy Chanel which I semi-conspirationally mentoned smells like 1932. I also had my puppy-dog look. Good luck!
