Friday scent of the day 4/15

Posted by Robin on 15 April 2016 474 Comments

old fashioned roses

Friday! Plus, Leonardo da Vinci's birthday and World Art Day. Our community project for today: we're wearing rose for What's in a name, part 1 ("What's in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet").

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Une Rose by Frédéric Malle. I smell pretty much perfect.

Reminder: on 4/22 we're doing What's in a name, part 2 — we'll be wearing "misnamed" fragrances. You can interpret that howsoever you wish. The project was suggested by Dilana, who noted that Jardins d’Écrivains Orlando smelled like traditional honey cake instead of a modernist multi-gender novel or hero/heroine. If you like, tell us what your fragrance should have been called, and/or tell us what the fragrance you're wearing should have smelled like in order to fit its name.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I would be happier about Friday if my taxes were done. Still have local to finish.

I screwed up my taxes really bad several years go, so now I pay an accountant to do them. I still have to organize everything beforehand, I’m not one who can just hand over a pile of paperwork and expect someone to make sense of it.

I did fed & state. Our local is the easiest…it takes about 10 minutes. But I just can’t seem to make myself do them! Obviously a mental block that requires a perfume purchase ;-)

Nick, I do not know Tauer perfumes well enough to judge, but there is something slightly dusty in this perfume, now that you mentioned it. Overall, however, on me it keeps shifting between a walk in the garden after the rain and something edible, foody.

I tried Tresor MR once and was impressed. Tresor is the scent my grandmother wore, and it brings back memories of her. She wore that and Escape, oil of olay face lotion, and used Biologe or something like that, hair care. All those scents remind me of her.. Sweet memories

I purchased it mid ’90s, made in Italy by Ferragamo Parfums, as per the box.
Confession time, bless me Donatella ! I had a job five minutes away from an outlet mall with 20 perfume shops in addition to Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman outlets. Also, an Estee Lauder outlet. Spent my lunch hour at a different store, and by the time I batted around, started all over.
Great for my collection, my wallet cowered in fear. :)

Oh, in those days, I could not afford the bottles like Armani Code nor Acqua di Gio at the normal height of the shelf; they were so expensive. And I could only reach for the bottom shelf — the old or the ‘unfashionable’ ones. I wanted a piece of luxury, so I picked Chanel. There were Pour Monsieur, Antaeus, and Egoiste. A monsieur, I was not. No beard and moustache, I had no need of announcing the virility with Antaeus. The most wearable in later stages was Egoiste. It became my first.

Rose Day = my time to shine!

I’m in Rose Absolue by Annick Goutal. Bonus romantic association: My husband bought it for me on our honeymoon in Montreal.

I wish I had some rose tea to drink, but I seem to have finished it all, so it’s jasmine tea instead.

How nice that he knew what you would like. I gifted my mother with a Misia sample in an attempt to rid her of YSL Baby Doll, but she has since relegated it to the back of the shelf. I cannot fathom why she would switch from Diorissimo in her first time with perfume and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil in her Hermès phase to YSL Baby Dol…

I have never tried Baby Doll but the name is…not promising. Maybe you can give her a little Rose Ikebana or Quel Amour! to try? Similar fruity-rose concept, but…classier.

Frankly, I don’t want to support an institution that doesn’t support any flexibility for women returning back to work. Maybe I am being to harsh? The irony of it all is that I work in women’s health in a high level position.
Looking forward, I see an opportunity to be with my kids and be a mom above all else, to read more and see what my next step is, and most importantly, wear some beautiful perfumes every day :) Try new teas.. and maybe, just maybe, make it to a NYC meet up to meet and connect with some of my other fumey friends because I will have the time.

I hope that this will be taken in the spirit it is being offered. Part of your decision WILL be determined about supporting an institution without flexibility and it’s so painful. But jobs are about money and insurance coverage and financial futures. PLEASE make sure that you give yourself a month or so before making a decision. That month will make the decision worth it. Making the change to go back requires at least that amount of time to evaluate, I think. Of course, you and your husband may have already put that time into it before you went back, so forgive me if I am miss peaking.

Before I make decisions I ask myself 3 questions regarding my job.
            1. Do I see myself retiring in this field?
            2. What are my concerns about staying home with the babies
            3. Am I still passionate about my job and still feel excited about it.
When you are completely honest with yourself you can make better judgements regardless of what the length of time you give, a day or a month. Most people know many answers to their problems but have a hard time coming to terms with it themselves.

That is what I was thinking! They would rather lose a brilliant experienced worker with a long work history than compromise on hours. Or, at least allow flexibility to work from home . All the best Lovetosmellgood! Maybe in three years time you will go back to work and be in a position where you can sack the lot of them.

if it helps….while I do think the Shiseido is beautiful, there are still so many roses which are also beautiful. I’m trying to say that sometimes the exclusive and elusive nature of certain scents creates an overblown mystique. Have you tried any of the Annick Goutal roses? Or perhaps Creed Fleur de The Rose Bulgare? Or MDCI Rose de Siwa?

I got mine from TPC a few years ago–they had a partial bottle for sale–so I didn’t have to deal with international shipping issues.

I do consider it to be the most perfect rose scent I have tried, and I have tried quite a few. I don’t regard a perfume as a “rose” perfume unless the rose is front and center. Unfortunately, most rose soliflores have a sour aspect that I do not care for, or else they are too sharp and shrill. Two that I have tried that did NOT have these failings on my skin are Yosh Sottile (available from Lucky Scent) and AG Rose Absolue. I did NOT care for AG Rose Splendide, which the SA tried to sell me when I asked about Rose Absolue, and they did not have it in stock.

Nice! The only bottles available these days are on ebay and I cringe looking at the prices.

AG Rose Absolue is wonderful. I’ve not tried Spendide, but heard that Absolue is better.

Actually, I paid about as much for my 1/2 bottle as the price of a full bottle on ebay. It was already in the US, though, so I had no worries about international shipping, customs, etc. About the same time, I wanted to buy AG Rose Absolue, but it was not in stock in any of the stores, or any of the online sources I checked. The NM SA tried to sell me Rose Splendide, which was in stock, claiming it was practically the same. It is not, and I did not want it. I do like Rose Absolue, but I still like White Rose better. As for the price, do keep in mind that it is rather concentrated. I am not sure if it is an extrait or a high concentration EdP, but it only needs to be lightly dabbed, not sprayed or applied lavishly. In any case, there are a great many perfume that are far more expensive. I am not saying everyone should buy it, but I have never regretted my purchase for a moment.

Veered off into sample land, wearing a generous dose of Santalum Slivers, which, after the entertaining citrusy opening has some rose nestled in its bright little heart. This is a unexpectedly cheerful scent, good for this bright but still chilly spring day. Kerosene has a lot of great scents. I can’t do the tobaccoy ones, but Pretty Machine, R’oud Elements and now Santalum Slivers are all very nice fragrances. I will be buying Pretty Machine when my spray sample is gone, and I will at least get decants of these other two, for sure, as time goes on. A very interesting indie house. Totally unaffiliated – don’t know why I made this sound like a commercial. Happy Friday, everyone! I am going to burn my totally overgrown veggie garden this weekend. What fun!

Rose scents often go a bit sour on me, but one that works is Rose Anonyme layered with Cuir Mauresque. Foggy morning here and a bit cool, and the warmth of RA/CM is most welcome. Goes well with my coffee too!

I should try that combination. I tried layering a few times, but was never satisfied. I either thought that the ratio of one fragrance to the other should be more precise (which is hard to get with layering), or-more often- they were incompatible altogether

      • SheriG says:

You’re absolutely right that the ratio can make or break a layering combination. If you do try the Rose Anonyme/Cuir Mauresque pairing, here’s my ratio: a tiny amount of the RA, and a “normal” amount (whatever that is for you) of CM. It’s been consistently good for me, anyway!

Yay, I’m twins with Robin! We *do* smell pretty much perfect! ;)

Against all accountability, I was called back in for a second interview today after feeling like I’d really bombed on my first one on Wednesday, so clearly the interviewers were responding to Mohur’s gracious influence and not to my mediocre performance. Here’s hoping Une Rose will similarly charm them…

I am wearing Dolce & Gabbanna Rosa Excelsa, from a sample I received from Ulta. It is pretty, fresh, slightly aquatic rosy , soft and feminine, with a musky dry down. It is lovely, but fleeting, I put it on at 6:30, and I can just barely get whiffs of it at 10:30, so that’s 4 hours longevity. It smells like a lot of current rose fragrances. I like it, but would not buy a FB of it, although the bottle is beautiful. I realized I do not have any strickly rose fumes, unless you count an old body spray of BBW Velvet Tuberose, which I am still not sure I like. I have received Chanel fragrances as gifts, and they have rose in them, but not rose centric.

SOTD is Annick Goutal Heure Exquise. A little bit of the dry body oil after shower, and a bunch of the edp to carry me through the day. I love this perfume. I am constantly amazed how Goutal put so many luscious ingredients together but managed to keep it so dry and yet so lush.

One of the most beautiful fragrances ever made, you smell wonderful. Does it qualify as a rose Ann? I always thought it was an iris more than a rose, but I will be happily wrong and proudly wear it as a rose (by any other note)!

I get a lot more rose out of the dry body oil and edp than I do the edt. I think of the edt as mostly a bitter aldehyde, iris sandalwood affair, and the edp as more “wet” with more rose in the opening and less bitter aldehyde but still with the great iris parts and sandalwood base. I get the most rose out of the dry body oil.

I just received my Heure Exquise package and sprayed it on – a blind purchase (and I have never liked any AG I’ve sniffed and hate a bottle of Eau de Charlotte I own from ages ago). It’s delicious, like a drier version of Cartier So Pretty. And as I’m holding my wrist to my nose, I am smelling such a clear scent of fresh lilacs or hyacinths, as if they were pressed into my skin. It may be galbanum and sandalwood creating that illusion.

    Lush Imogen Rose!

This one makes me so happy. It is more expensive than the other Lush perfume offerings in the U.S. , but rightly so. The quality of the rose they use shines and is thoroughly the star of the fragrance. The perfumer also made this fragrance for his daughter, Imogen, yet it isn’t girly. Instead, there is just enough vanilla and incense through the development to keep things interesting. Quite linear, but I am quite alright with that.

    Friyay!!!

I often have good intentions and a plan for joining the community fragrance wearing on Friday, but then forget and go with something else.

Today I was successful: I’m wearing Lancome Mille et Une Roses which I think is a beautiful rose and is cheering me up for a crazy day at work. They’re also predicting 10 or more inches of heavy wet snow for us here (near Boulder, CO) starting tonight, and it’s the right kind of warm ambery rose for the coming weather as well.

I’m still not ready for any fierce roses – just craving the gentle ones. Am in my favorite PdRosine Rose d’Ete today and a little sad that my bottle’s half gone, because I suspect that by the time I need a new bottle, it will probably have either been discontinued or reformulated.

Took Hunter-Dogly to the vet today for checkup and shots and toenail clipping, and he did *much* better this time than last year. Very healthy, and he totally did not bite anybody!! Of course, there are these bright red “WILL BITE” stickers all over his chart now, so they know to put the muzzle on him when they clip his nails. And he did growl really severely at a big bearded guy in the waiting room… as he was a rescue dog, I suspect we’ll never know what caused his antagonism toward big bearded guys in general… but I was able to restrain him without much trouble, and he was pretty calm by the time we were all done.

Glad your vet visit was a success! It can be kinda exasperating knowing your pet can be troublesome for visits.

I had an old cat that ranked as the Second Most Evil Cat in Existence by my vet. She’s also one of my really good friends, so it’s ok that she gave my old cat that title, but geez the stories I’d hear after picking up my cat from visits…. you’d think she was possessed by the devil. She’s no longer with us – put down a few years ago – but she was very memorable for her fierceness.

Apparently the Most Evil Cat had to be drugged before it even got to the vet or There Will Be Blood…. everywhere…. My vet has several scars from that cat.

Mine drew only a minor amount of blood, but she’d still try to attack the staff – with a muzzle on – in her cage. She’d stick our her paws and swipe at staff walking past her.

He’s a mutt! We don’t actually know. I’m pretty sure there’s some Lab in there. Maybe some German Shepherd, maybe some beagle… he has teeny ears for a 50-pound dog, and a crinkled forehead, so the vet thinks he might have some Shar-Pei in him too.

The CEO says he is a “genuine Brown-Nosed Attention Hound.”

T-Rex hates having her nails clipped, too. We have worked long and hard on that issue. She still doesn’t like it but she tolerates it and lets me file off the sharp edges as well.
The vacuum was a whole separate issue! She is by nature very gregarious and friendly with animals and people alike, but she is incredibly aggressive towards the vacuum when I fire it up. At first I thought it was just puppy stuff and ignored it. It continued to escalate and I started verbal corrections, which basically went in one ear and out the other. Yap, yap, yap! Circle, dive in, bite the vacuum bumper, dive out, yap, yap, growl, yap…press repeat. Ugh. So, one day I had had enough, I got her leash, clipped one end to her collar and looped the other around the vacuum handle, fired it up and commenced vacuuming. Not a single peep out of her! She hates it and gets stressed, panting with her ears back and totally NOT LOOKING at the evil machine, but tough luck. We now vacuum together without all the drama. ????

I’m not sure if ‘love’ is the right word. It’s like with books – I often read lighter things and I enjoy them very much, but do I love them they way I love my Atwoods or my Chekhovs? Probably not. And it’s not the point either. I certainly find it pretty and comfortable and uplifting.

It was a toss up between no 19 and Lyric today. It’s a little too warm for Lyric right now so no 19 in EDP form won out. I love the rose in that one. I think I will wear Lyric tonight.

I love the rose in No. 19 edp too! I used to accent it with a bit of rose body butter (but then I ran out, and The Body Shop replaced Moroccan Rose with something else that isn’t nearly as good, so I need a different rose lotion).

Wearing the L’Artisan for Aedes today, which does have a smidge of rose but I confess I mainly just wanted to pounce on the first totally allergy-free day I’ve had since I got the sample :) It’s gorgeous, one of the few incense fragrances I genuinely enjoy as opposed to feeling like, “Well I can see why that’s considered beautiful [but I would not like wearing it.]” TBH I’m sure the pink pepper is going a ways toward making the fragrance feel easy and appealing to me. That note’s not overly prominent, to my nose, but I think it softens it up a lot. The rose too, actually.

Meanwhile, this is well off-topic, but does anyone have a rec for a mascara that tilts more natural than dramatic? Need to replace a once-loved but now reformulated-for-much-the-worse product, and it’s proving more difficult than I expected. Part of the problem seems to be that “good” mascara in the eyes (ha ha sorry) of many beauty writers is one that produces a much more high-intensity look than is my style. Would be grateful for any suggestions!

Eh, having trying and rejected a half dozen now, what I’m willing to pay is being dragged upward. I probably couldn’t stomach it if it crossed into the $50+ category, say? (To be clear I was previously very happy wearing drugstore mascara: if I could get a viable product without paying for luxe packaging, high-end designer name, etc., I’d be delighted. But at this point I’m willing to pay just to put the question to rest–while I enjoy the hunt on the perfume side of things, I do not feel the same way about other beauty products!)

Yay for relief from allergies! Smelling excellent is the perfect way to celebrate.

I got a mini of Benefit They’re Real mascara with one of my Sephora purchases, and I absolutely love it (though it might feel less dramatic to me since I have dark hair). They have brown, too, so that could be more subtle. It’s one of the only mascaras I’ve used, though, that actually holds my eyelash curl, which made it an automatic winner in my book.

Oh, this could be where I went wrong with this one, and maybe accounts for why I’m having difficulties overall–given pretty pale/wispy eyelashes I basically inevitably have to make a second pass to get little guys, and yeah, then it did end up looking pretty intense. Makes me appreciate that my old tube only applied very little product so I could make several passes and get everything without building up more volume than I wanted. Ha, that unfortunate day when you find out you’re SUPER picky about your eye makeup!

Not laughing in the least: my beloved former product was the pink & green Maybelline! And I wore it even at a time when I had to attend events with people in professional makeup, ended up having some funny conversations with people who’d complimented my eye makeup explaining that I spent four whole dollars on it :) It’s just that my most recent tube of it smudges and flakes so much, within a few hours I’m wearing it all over my face–enough to draw less complimentary comment from others :( But maybe I just got a bad batch, rather than it being reformulated? You haven’t had problems with it?

Oh I should clarify! I don’t need it to be made exclusively of plant-based/vel sim ingredients necessarily, altho certainly not opposed if a good one happens to also be organic or whatever! It’s just a visual preference for the “makeunder” style (requisite disclosure that I do see the paradox in referring to what’s basically just a specific style of artifice as “natural”, let’s just say I mean it figuratively rather than literally :) )

I’ll second the recommendation for Benefit They’re Real, for a minimal-drama, your-lashes-but-better sort of effect. I’ve also been liking Blinc, which is waterproof and wears better on me. I think it comes down to brush design — dense, teddy-bear brushes make for a more natural effect; more spindly brushes make for more clumpage and therefore intense made-uppitude.

It takes far less time than it would take me to put on mascara, given that I can’t see what I’m doing without my coke-bottle bifocals. And if you’re willing to pay up to $50 for something that they tell you to replace every three months, it’s not even much more expensive.

Heh I should probably not admit how infrequently I replace my mascara :) (I would if I got an eye infection, I promise! But yeah otherwise I would use a mascara until it noticeably stopped working as well–can see how that probably gave a misleading impression about my annual budget for this!)

Do you have access to Kevyn Aucoin? The Volumizing Mascara (don’t be put off by the name, it’s misleading) is the only mascara in the last 10 years that I have bought twice and will soon buy the third time. It gives a beautiful, elegant result – long, defined lashes, but no drama. Perfect for everyday, also because it’s a tubing mascara, which means zero smudgeing, and you can remove it with warm water. Great for sensitive eyes.

If this one is too difficult to get, I still think Lancome Definicilis is one of the best mascaras out there for refined lashes. Again, you do get length and separation, but not much volume.

Instead of wearing Une Rose I decided to wear something ridiculous and fun. I’d say it’s the exact opposite of the expensive and seductive Une Rose. Montale Roses Musk.

I am trying out Portrait of a Lady…for the first time! Somehow I never got around to sniffing this one when it first came out.

It is a beauty. Rose, cinnamon and incense.

Poking around on Fragrantica, some say it has been reformulated (not sure due to IFRA or other reasons) and it is weaker now and not as lovely…came out in 2010 I think.

Has it been changed up please? Should I seek out the original formula or leave well enough alone? ;) Seeking out the original formula when the packaging hasn’t changed (to my knowledge) is a big endeavor indeed.

I have an old bottle and a new bottle and they are both good. The old bottles had shiny caps and the new ones have matte caps. But I wouldn’t worry about chasing down vintage since the new version is still quite good.

I’m in Cuir de Lancome, not a huge rose lover and have missed this one sorely. I think it’s time to spray rather than dab this beauty.

Enjoyed a lovely night out last night with some NYC ‘fume heads – thanks gals!

FYI, L’Artisan is doing 30% off some of their scents.

I love seeing the variety today! As for me, after trying so many different samples I had around (including the old Coty rose and Keiko Mecheri Attar), it was definitely Goldilocks time. So I went with Aftelier Rose Body Oil. This has been discontinued but I found out that she will custom make a batch for you if you order 6 bottles, so I did that at Christmas time and that solved much of my Christmas shopping problems. Because even non-perfumistas appreciate a beautiful, entirely natural body oil!

Having so much fun reading what everyone else is wearing. This morning I was paralyzed with the choice – I have so many rose loves, which is ridiculous considering the many years I wouldn’t even consider a rose scent. Finally joined thegoddessrena in wearing by Killian’s Rose Oud, for the second Friday in a row. It’s becoming a Friday thing for me.

I’ve missed you all after a busy few weeks hardly managing to post along at all.

I tried to join in quietly this week with lots of roses. Like jirish I had a lot of options this morning which must mean I love rose perfumes now, which was not the case at the start of loving perfume.

Anyway wearing again the beautiful Floris a rose for…it always feels right. Apparently it includes a touch of oud so might try to compare it to the killian which I don’t know.

Robin, you forgot to mention it’s National Spiral-Sliced Ham Day (I kid you not!) but, more importantly, it’s Jackie Robinson Day at all MLB ballparks.

SOTD is Dame Perfumery Desert Rose because it’s ROSE! front and center – opulent and slightly spicy but not too fancy for casual Friday – unlike so many so-called ‘rose’ fragrances that provide only a fleeting glimpse of my favorite flower hidden beneath layers of other notes.

It’s also National Hang Out Your Laundry Day – I am kidding; today was the first day this spring I was able to do this and I just wanted to celebrate!

Hey Robin, kissin’ cuzzins, I am also in Une Rose today. I love this scent not only for its intrinsic beauty, but also because of the memories it holds. It was the first full niche bottle I ever bought in Paris from the boutique after sniffing the entire line (many fewer then!). It is always remarkable, and when I go for any length of time without wearing it, it is always a welcome surprise at that first spray. Coming home to an old friend, still beautiful, full of life and forever a part of your history.

As a rose lover, this has been an awesome week and I have loved reading about everyone’s rose connection.

Nice flowers! Like you, Robin, I still have to finish my tax return!

SOTD = Ann Gerard Rose Cut

On theme today with the name AND central note! This one doesn’t get a lot of mention but all that means is that when I wear it, I feel unique and special. There’s an old world elegance to the overall aesthetics of Rose Cut, from the purpley pink juice, to the compact round perfectly proportioned flacon, to the script calligraphy to the aldehylic rose-patchouli.

The NYC fumies meet up was fun, with some people meeting each other for the first time. The perfumes that were rather nice on paper were Parfums MDCI Cio Cio San and Carner Barcelona Palo Santo (it didn’t leave much of an impression when I first smelled this at Twisted Lily). We then had a fabulous dinner at a Mexican restaurant around the corner from Osswald and I had a tasty fish taco – yum. We may move to the “burbs” for our next outing – yes! a mall in NJ!

Now to read through the comments…

It’s a chilly, overcast day here, so the closest I was willing to come to rose is Le Labo’s Rose 31. In the true tradition of Le Labo naming, the rose is barely peeking out through all the warm spices and woods.

LL Rose 31 is great and I also think it is such a chameleon. I never exactly know how it’s going to behave or which facet I’ll smell more when I put it only. But that cumin in it – probably my most fav use of cumin in any fragrance – always makes me hungry!

I tried RV the other day for the sake of thisxwerk’s project, and thought it lovely, but I think if I were to buy a rose perfume in the foreseeable future, it would be Galion’s La Rose, which seems just a little dirtier, a little more, I dunno, equivocal, perhaps. I might be developing a yen for La Rose, in which case, there’s a bright shiny enabler’s pin on its way to Gaynor.

Maybe a more pastel bouquet appealed because the only true rose I own is Nahema, which is so deep and rosy and ever-present once it’s on that it’s not easy to choose as a regular daily wear. I might subconsciously have been looking for a daily go-to perfume, ‘cos it’s been months since I bought any perfume. On the strength of your expertise, I think I’ll re-try Rose Velour in a more cerebral way next week.

Forgot to mention.. I layered Marni Rose with Tea for Two to see what would happen (also I just wanted to wear Tea for Two but didn’t want to skip out on the theme). I was afraid it was a bad idea at first because the opening of MR is a bit too green but as it settled in they came together pretty nicely. The cardamom from MR is meshing nicely with T4T’s chai spices, and the milky honey of T4T is lending MR a welcome touch of creamy sweetness.

That sounds really nice, I haven’t tried Tea for two as yet, although it’s on my list, along with many other L’Artisans.
I’ve also heard that Marni Rose layers well with Marni, so I’m going to look out for a good deal on it on eBay, is it very different from Marni? (More rose, obviously!)

I haven’t smelled the original Marni in some time, but I do think they’re pretty different. I would characterize MR as more of a “pink rose”, and the original as a red rose, if that makes any sense. The original has more incense and spice, and MR has a greener top note (a hint of mint, I think) and cardamom, which is kind of lemony-minty.

I need to try that. The greenness of MR bugs me, but it hadn’t really occurred to me to try and layer it. T4T sounds like it would make an interesting partner for MR.

It is a good combo, but I will say that in the beginning, when MR is at it’s greenest, the combo is maybe slightly medicinal. Hence my fear that I had made a terrible mistake. You have to give it a few minutes to settle in and then it gets good.

I got completely off track and put on some vintage Lubin Nuit de Longchamp first thing this AM, just because I was craving vintage. Later I put on Chanel Egoïste, which was too strong until I washed most of it off. I think both of them include some rose. I might try layering with a lighter rose scent this evening to see what happens.

Place: Whanganui. Cooler than Auckland = wonderful!
State: apprehensive. Ma turned her back on me = ominous!
Mood: grim but resolved. I can do this = the dear man is worth any amount of tongue biting.
Activity: will paint the putty around the window glazing = constructive, with the absolute merit of being outside and hard to reach. Oh, plus, it’s rhythmic, mindless and promises to be moderately soothing.
Perfume: Jungle Elephant = Waterdragon fights back, and to hell with the consequences!

Saturday and I have a NST weekend ahead: Michael Fassbender in Jane Eyre courtesy of the NST film review committee, two Jaan Kross novels as a result of literary expert (Annicky’s) recommendation, a new improved daily clothing uniform (Olenska?) centred around my woollen beanie collection that cuts down dressing time by 80 seconds so I’m now dressed before I’ve even got out of bed ( wear a beanie for a ‘pop’ of colour and rock a pair of frayed PJs), an increased perfume budget by not following NST advice to see a doctor about my tennis elbow ( $60 saved!), a Northern Hemisphere alter-ego spring perfume courtesy of Herr Doktor Koenigsberg’s brilliant notion (Cristalle), a cup of tea ( stewed , black , luke warm with an oily surface ) in honour of Robin and Austenfan…. And SOTD Immortal Beloved in tribute to the inspiring NST whanau!!! ( family)

The beanie is the perfect accessory! You’re very wise to team it with frayed pjs: if the pjs were perfect, I think it would all be too matchy-matchy and photo-shoppy….a scarlet lip would complete the look and slightly toughen it while retaining a sophisticated edginess.

I think some discreet sparkle would be a style featurette that everyone would do well to emulate. And it would set off the natural oils in the wool of the beanie in a subtle, yet assertive way.

I did that thing of ‘what gives me joy’ and realised that only my 50-plus beanies and an old Threadless t shirt featuring a Dire Wolf made the cut. Have downgraded my tidying methods and expectations accordingly.

Mohur Extrait, so I smell darn perfect too. AND feel like Aishwaria Rai in Devdas. These have been stressful, big, historical days. I need my perfume to be comforting, and most roses have good effects on my soul, but Mohur is like long Clooney hug.

Egoiste! (and I always have to say it like that, with an exclamation point, like I’m in the commercial)
I added a couple dabs of bpal’s Rose Red, for a little extra rose – it’s like a puff of cool air from a florist’s cooler full of roses.

Sometimes I try to think of what my bespoke fragrance would be like, and I end up thinking – I already have it, it’s Egoiste! Very comfortable fragrance for me. I don’t think I could come up with anything better.

(and oh my gosh – 360 comments! I’m going to have to log in sooner in the future)

I have a vintage splash bottle – bought from Ebay, not sure how old it is! However – I’ve tried more current testers over the last few years, at the local Nordstrom. I think the more modern version is slightly different, but I think they’ve worked hard to keep the spirit of Egoiste intact. I’ve been meaning to get a backup bottle for a while. I like the current formula just as much. : )

Rose is a tricky note for me; it can be sour/soapy which is super unpleasant. There are a few that work for me though – Rose Flash, Miele Rosa, La Fille de Berline, Un Rose de Kandahar, and today’s SOTD, Tauer’s Incense Rose.

So, today was my last day on my current London contract. I started the day with a very positive meeting with a potential client and it looks like I may have secured my next contract already. (This of course is the contractor’s dream: no ‘down time’s between contracts). The most exciting thing: it’s based in Paris! I am excited and apprehensive in equal measure.

To matters NST. SOTD is “Thirty Three” from Ex Idolo, a small brand with only 2 perfumes to their name. Thirty Three is on the one hand another Rose-Oud composition; on the other hand it boasts aged our and patchouli ingredients and sets out to be a bit out of the ordinary.

In my case, I perceive a qualitative difference and like the resinous depth of this perfume. However, I’m not by any means in love with it. I sort of feel this is both the star example of a style, and the confirmation that this style is not for me. As a newbie, I actually count this as a successful trial.

I should add, if you like rose-oud combinations, do order a sample of this; it is of superlative quality and worth checking out for yourself. :^)

SotD = Annick Goutal Rose Absolue. As it reaches the dry down it wafts back and forth between roses and a gentle hint of something else. Perhaps a bit of amber hiding under the roses?

Wearing Stella right now. I had to spend the day shopping for a dress to wear to a funeral next week, so it’s nice be sniffing a perfume I love.

I just want to share this story to make a point/plea. One of my best friends from college died unexpectedly over the weekend. And her parents didn’t want the news posted publicly on social media. But it turned out that a certain subset of the large community of her friends knew and only bothered to communicate amongst themselves and not see if there was anyone else they could contact. The rest of us were left completely in the dark. I was alerted Tuesday to the *possibility* she died, but the rest of us did not have it confirmed until yesterday afternoon!

Having experienced this sort of thing before, it’s made me want to take the opportunity to remind/urge people to simply take a second in any given situation and see if there’s someone being left behind, left out, or purposely excluded who shouldn’t.

    Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

        Thanks tiffanie, you’re so sweet!

I wanted to share the story because I abhor casual/lazy or intentional clique-like exclusion, which what much of the problem was in this case. It’s even easy to unintentionally leave people out of stuff! Either way, it’s often quite hurtful to those on the receiving end. So I just felt compelled to remind even a small slice of humanity that it’s good for each of us to try to ensure we’re not!

You’re right about NST: all of that and mascara! ????

We are fortunate, indeed–with many thanks due to Robin!!

I’m very sorry for the loss of your friend. Your reminder is indeed useful, as I (along with much of my father’s family) am terrible at keeping in touch with people. Sometimes, though, we really need to make an effort.

Thank you. I think most people really do need to, as you put it so well, make an effort more (on pretty much every aspect of interpersonal relationships). But that’s other people; everyone *here* is much more kind and thoughtful than most people!!

My condolences about your friend, Creosote.

I experienced something similar when a friend who became rapidly terminally ill with pancreatic cancer withdrew from the world beyond her closest family and told her family she didn’t want a public funeral. Her friends didn’t see her in her illness, and we didn’t go to the funeral, which added bewilderment and estrangement and an otherworldly sort of limbo to the obvious grief. Her husband very kindly met up with a large group of us weeks later, and we went to the grave with him, which was a huge release.

I didn’t realise how much truth there is in the saying “funerals are for the living” until this happened.

In the past, where I come from, women used to be routinely excluded from funerals, and children still sometimes are. It heaps loss on loss.

No worries, geordie. Thank you for sharing *your* story. That must have been a very rough situation!

Boy, “otherworldly limbo” is a spot-on description of what those of us not in the know were feeling until yesterday. I spent around 24 hours thinking she was still in the ICU (when she had actually died 2 days earlier) and then another 24 knowing–by inference–she was gone but not ‘officially’ knowing. During that time, I started to think, “Oh God, did she know she was going to die? Was she scared?” But I had to just shove it away, until the news was official. It was surreal. And I could only send other friends a message along the lines of “It appears that she has died. All I know for sure at this point is…”

On the bright side, I think the funeral will be totally packed, like with hundreds of people. It will be good to see them all.

After wimping out on Sophia Grojsman last week (I’ve tried at least 5 of her perfumes, and didn’t want to wear a single one again), I decided to do a whole week of roses, even going out to cadge a couple of samples for the purpose, and then failed to post until now. So: Monday was J. Crew/Arquiste No. 57 (very pleasant sweet rose/patchouli), Tuesday Jo Malone Red Roses (as advertised, and I was relieved when it faded away), Wednesday Estée Lauder Knowing (gorgeous), Thursday L’Artisan Safran Troublant (rose playing third fiddle, which is pretty much where I like it), and today, Knowing again.

Knowing was a little scary to me, frankly, with the comparisons to Aromatics Elixir and Paloma Picasso. It is like a kinder, gentler AE, and I feel as though Knowing helped me understand AE, which I tried not long after falling down the rabbit hole. Knowing gets softer and warmer over the course of the day, and I like it better and better. I think there was perhaps something with a bit of vanilla in it on the sweater I put on Wednesday night, because I don’t like it quite as much now as I did then. It’s still pretty gorgeous, though, and I’ll have to get more of it eventually.

Now to read all 400-something posts that preceded me. Happy Friday, everyone!

Perhaps it was a combination of the spices and amber (according to Fragrantica anyway) in the base that smelled like vanilla? I’m sort of shocked by how immediately I liked Knowing the first time I smelled it, right away on the scent strip. Once the the spritz on my arm had worked into the heart notes, I found a tester in the next department store and sprayed myself everywhere else!

I’ve been wearing Byredo’s Rose of No Man’s Land all week. I wasn’t prepared to like it as much as I do, considering how lukewarm I am about the Byredo line in general. But this one is pure and perfect and I think I’ve fallen in love.
