And fortunately, my husband likes grey hair. He’s ninety-seven. I was saying this morning, if we last until February, we’ll be married sixty-four years. We use the same perfume. It’s called Yatagan, it’s by Caron—it’s not very popular. It’s hard to find over here, so we used to buy it in these great big flacons and keep it in the fridge—that’s what we were told to do. We like it very much. Also, when I was younger, I used to use Mitsouko a lot at night, which is this very exotic odor made by Guerlain. I don’t remember if the formula has changed or if I have changed, but something has changed—and I’m always in a hurry anyways, so I just slap on the Yatagan and everybody seems to like it.
— Iris Apfel talks to Into The Gloss about her beauty routine.
This article was fabulous! I hope that I can age as gracefully as she has in body, mind and spirit!
Hard to imagine that Long Island City was once farmland as it is now such a posh and highly desirable place to live (then again, Queens Boulevard once was just a dirt road and almost all of Queens was lumped in with Long Island instead of being considered part of NYC)
I love the fact that she shares her fragrance with her husband… my parents, who have been married for almost 60 years, do the same…..my father has no choice because my mother is always hiding unopened fragrance bottles from him and he is forced to wear whatever is around 🙂
We should all hope. And not only shares with her husband, but shares a great fragrance 🙂
I love Iris Apfel! I saw the documentary about her recently and I kept thinking, “What perfume are you wearing?” (I think this article was before the documentary.)
It’s on my watch list but have not seen it yet…
I also see on the one picture there is some sort of box (vintage!) for Bal a Versailles. Very cool. I recently saw a one page type article about her in some magazine from last year. She’s wearing what I think is a very hip odd black and white outfit with some great mis-matched socks. I pulled the page out for inspiration.
And in the next photo there’s Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte and Bandit and what look like soaps and shower gels and things from hotels. This is definitely a woman after my own heart.
I saw her name and thought, Isn’t that the fabulous old broad with the huge glasses? And it is! I knew nothing about her and now after reading that interview I’m completely in love with her and I have to watch that documentary tout de suite.
I saw the documentary and it was very interesting, but her hoarding made me uncomfortable. Her apartment was so packed with stuff she could only walk through pathways between the objects – gave me an anxiety claustrophobia feeling just watching it.
This made me smile. Love her attitude and so sweet that they share a flacon of Caron that lives in the fridge.
