Thursday scent of the day 4/7

Posted by Robin on 7 April 2016 328 Comments

Saint Laurent Spring / Summer 2016 campaign

Happy Almost-Friday, everyone! It's also National No Housework Day, which we've been practicing for over the last year. (It's also World Health Day. The 2016 theme: halt diabetes.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne, by Sophia Grojsman with Sophie Labbé. Tea at the moment is a Panyang Congou.

Reminder: On 4/8, wear a perfume by Sophia Grojsman, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Saint Laurent Spring / Summer 2016 campaign, by Hedi Slimane, who has since been replaced with Anthony Vaccarello.

I am trying! My goal is to get my full bottles down to ten (which was my limit for about 40 years until the hoarding took over!!!!! Actually reading blogs did not help me one bit-LOL!)…..I may also give some of my decants and samples to my nieces, nephews, mother, close friends, etc…..that will help put a dent in my collection as well…..and I know they will all be more than appreciative!

JM Orange Blossom is a good one. I have so many samples. I usually give the ones I don’t want or duplicate samples away as part of gifts. My family and friends know when they have a birthday or a special holiday coming up to expect a few samples as part of their gift. They are always so appreciative.
I also try to make a stranger’s day. I always carry a few samples in my makeup bag. If someone compliments me on a fragrance, I will give them a sample of it. Its kind of like “paying it forward” with fragrance :)

Twinings really does a good job of that one, doesn’t it? Granted, I have my lovely Earl Grey Supreme by Harney & Sons at home, which I love, but I’ll take what I can get at work.

How is the Harney one? My favorite Harney is Earl of Harlem which combines a smoky black along with the bergamot note….

The Supreme has a mix of black and green tea in it so it’s got the nice bergamot flavor, but has a lighter, vegetal feel to it in general. I love it.

Cuir de Lancome today – poise and professionalism, or at least an attempt at it.

I gave SoulCycle a try last night and had my butt pleasantly kicked. Not something I can afford on the regular, but I may give spinning more of a try elsewhere.

Yes, though I’ve never taken one before. A group of my coworkers were going, so I gave it a try. It’s hard not to laugh at certain supposedly “motivational” things the instructor says, as it can dip dangerously towards an SNL skit at times, but it really was a good workout. I’m going to give spinning at my gym (which I belong to and barely use, shamefully) a try.

Good luck with it! It’s funny how motivational phrases come off as cheesy at first, but eventually sound really nice when you’re sweating your butt off in a workout.

The Seven app I use is hilariously bad. I listen to the Kung-fu instructor and he says stuff like, “You are working out the mind, body and spirit! You can do it!” or “Your body is the arrow, the workout is the bow!” and “You are making me proud, my son!” By then, I’m usually screaming back, “I’M YOUR DAUGHTER, DAMNIT!” And so I’ve joined in the ridiculousness of it all, but it helps the time go by faster.

If you mean Cuir de Lancome, absolutely. :)

As for Soul Cycle, I paid $20, and will get a free class in the next couple weeks, so for $10 a class, yes. However, after that, it is something like $34 a class, and no, I won’t be paying that.

It is hard! I used to spin a lot in LA because my sister is a spinning instructor. It does get easier if you keep going. She also played music I liked and I in no way tried to keep up with her because she is INSANE. She is definitely that SNL skit.

Have you ever tried Ineke’s Evening Edged in Gold? That is one of the few leathers I can wear….it’s almost like soft sueded leather…the way your leather gloves smell after several weeks of wearing different perfumes……I may actually wear that one tomorrow and finally drain another full bottle…..

Although I’ve been meaning to follow this week’s poll theme, yesterday I sampled vintage Christian Dior Jules. It’s an ideal men’s fragrance, but not so harsh or stereotypical that I can’t enjoy wearing it myself on a cold day.

I’m noticing that there are discounted bottles in newer packaging on Amazon now (from associated sellers). Has anyone tried the current version?

      Hello nozknoz !
You smell great, I have Jules in the ribbed bottle with peridot juice and it is a wonderful herbal/leather aroma.
You might want to search Basenotes, I seem to recall there are various bottles with slight variation in the juice.
I have not tried the current iteration. HTH. :)

It’s another Chanel day since I wore no 19 today. Vintage Coco might fit the rare 10 hour shift at work today. Or maybe Cuir de Russie. Aldehydes in no 22 isn’t my thing today.

It sneaks up on you. You think it is a simple, sweet little poof of musk and berries… but before you know you have to have MOOORREEEE…. or at least that is what happened to me :-)

I remember when I gave myself a hefty dose from the sampler, I really loved the sweet muskiness of that one. Then I bought a bottle from someone off fragrantica, and got a mini of the non extreme version in a swap but all I get is pepper. I wonder if they reformulated it recently and I just like the newer formulation?

Actually I got more in the extreme, but neither were the berry musky goodness that I loved from my sample vial. :( I never know if I should keep trying or just give up – it’s so disappointing! Maybe it was a dab/spray thing??

          • SublimiSomnium says:
            7 April 2016 at 8:28 pm

I was going to guess that it is a dab vs spray issue. I dabbed the extreme version and didn’t get much pepper.

Sampling Oxley from Olivine Atelier which is a pretty big gardenia with a touch of vanilla scent. I smelled the original Olivine at Anthropologie and ordered the sample set from her etsy shop. She really loves gardenia since 5 of the 7 scents contain it. This sampler should make me pretty happy since I also like gardenia

I also have the remnants of Lorenzo Villoresi Tropicana from last night’s sniffing session with some Boston folks still on one arm. Still under the impression that I need to get a bottle sometime of this happy fruit salad

CSP Vanille Ambre, the usual sweet vanilla with an amber base and just a hint of dust and smoke. It’s really nice. I think it’s discontinued. They just LOVE to discontinue their scents, don’t they? Except Vanille Abricot. That will be around until the end of time.

Hey Deva, I was just at TJMaxx and bought a bottle on your recommendation, so a big ol’ enabler pin to you. A lifetime supply for $8! I get cherry cough drop in the opening and now it’s settling down into a nice oriental. From the notes, Queen of Hearts might be better if I can find it; I tend not to love boozy notes and I get some in Queen.

As the news reporters here in Houston likes to call it, “Happy Friday Eve!” Our weather lately has been crazy for the last couple of weeks. We start out with temps between the 40’s and 50’s and by mid- afternoon, it is usually between the 70’s and 80’s (more on the 80’s end). So its hard to pick a scent that would be appropriate for the weather. My SOTD is Santal Blush by Tom Ford. To me, this is a unique scent and can only be worn when the mood hits you. Its a statement scent.
    Have a good day everyone!

yay! You FINALLY got it! I wore no 19 EDT when I was a teenager (not telling you what year that was-LOL!) and loved it but then never replaced my bottle …about 20 years or so later the EDP came out and I blind bought it….somehow it smelled different from the EDT I remembered loving…didn’t hate it but didn’t love it so I gifted it to my mother….when I finally got my bottle of Fleur no 1 (blind buy because it was deeply discounted) I was reminded of why I loved no 19…..there is a similarity, right???? Basically Fleur no 1 just seems a bit gentler and easier for me to wear than the current rendition of no 19……

I found Fleur no 1 through Mals’ s Muse blog, and funnily enough it reminds me more of Cristalle than no 19 (which I don’t mind as I love both).

ha! that is probably another reason why I love it! Cristalle was a staple in my wardrobe in the late 70s/early 80s!

I brought in five more bottles to work and with Fleur no 1 being one of them I just dabbed a bit on the back of each hand….I guess it reminds me more of no 19 because it seems greener to me than Cristalle (which was always very citrus to my nose)

I think it is the hyacinth note, which maybe more noticable in Cristalle EdT than in the EdP (but ofcourse there is also hyacinth in 19). Anyway, all good!

Iris Poudre today, trying to motivate myself and the small ones to get ready and take the dog for a run. Like many others today, missing the sunshine and wish spring would stop playing hide and seek with us!
I sadly don’t have any Sophia Grojsman perfumes, I love Femme, tho, and may get a mini of Paris next month.

I’ve got a bottle of Annees Folles on the way which on me is an interesting cross between a fougere and an oriental. I agree that No Sport is a nice geranium but doesn’t hit my buy list (not sure any geranium would)

Dzień dobry from Wrocław, where we are enjoying an ordinary Spring day of light cloud with occasional sunny spells. SOTD is “Herod” from Parfums de Marly, a tobacco and vanilla scent. It is smooth and pleasant enough, but not rocking my world today. I ordered a 5ml decant of yesterday’s “Arso” (stop giggling there at the back, Kanuka) and 2ml each of 3 other Profumum Roma things, so my wallet is pleased enough that today’s tobacco perfume is close but no cigar.

A few sprays of Rien on my chest followed by Secrets d’Essences Neroli on my arms to save me from Rien. I couldn’t smell Rien from under my jumper though but I secretly lifted the collar a few times to get the fumes. Of the two, I could still smell Neroli (from under the sleeves) during lunch.

And then A la Nuit for the late afternoon/evening. Where have you been all my life? I used to own Lust but it was wAAAYtoomuch so I gave my bottle away. I tested the Lutens concurrently with Lust and given Lust was a lot cheaper I thought it was the way to go. Not thus.

I’m in the opposite of a Sophia Grojsman scent, Orlov’s Orlov by Dominique Ropion. While many Grojsmans bring to my mind pale pink mohair sweaters coupled with hot pink flowing silk scarves, Orlov’s Orlov is all streamline white shantung pantsuit. It is supposed to be a white flower scent. If it is, it is a butter free, zero calorie whit flower. Diet tuberose. Wear it as much as you want and you won’t gain a pound. Expensive, elegant, and boring. I prefer curves.

I’ve basically been participating in No Housework Century and don’t plan to change anytime soon. I feel that there are so many more interesting things to do with my time than clean. Thankfully, I’m a neat person and I like doing laundry, so things don’t get awfully bad except in the dust and vacuum area, which I put off as long as I can. In anticipation of a day with temps in the mid-eighties, I’m wearing Shanghai Lily.

I bought a 15 ml manufacturer’s bottle from Ebay for $55. Not sure if we are supposed to list sellers here (I have no affiliation) but if you look up sold items for Hermes Muguet you can find them. The seller is in the US but gets things direct from France and has a lot of Hermes things and appears to have gotten these prior to release.

    *humble brag alert*

So it’s gonna be 85F and super sunny. How we are gonna get work done I don’t know!

So, SOTD: I had a hard time, because it’s gonna be very warm by solar noon, ad I drained my sample of Infusion D’Iris, which would have been perfect today. So today it’s about layering: Nuxe huile Prodigeuse as a body oil, followed with Bois des Iles extrait* on pulse points! I must say, I smell VERY good indeed, and combined scent of hay/flowers/woods is gonna be perfect in the heat of the afternoon- perfect for riding a bike AND sitting by the river, having an iced tea!

*Many thanks to Hajusuuri, who gave a completely unexpected sample of Bois des Iles extrait along with her generous decant of Sycamore! You guys should have heard me squealing in my apartment!

Almost all of my 34 full bottles are more than half empty (some have even less juice)…..in my past history of perfume wearing I would always drain the bottles completely and then regret no longer having them for a reference ( so many vintage gone !!!!!)…so over the past three or so years I have never been able to get down to the bottom of a bottle…but I decided recently that the ones I really love I will decant into 1ml vials for sniffing purposes only and just drain those bottles once and for all!

As you should…you are enjoying them!!!! That is part of the reason I am on a mission to get my collection down to a manageable number….years ago I kept my bottles to a maximum of ten but only had the fragrances that truly blew me away….I want to go back to that! I want to be WOWWED every morning when I spray on an old familiar love…..

Somehow, the juice seems to multiply inside the bottle! For example, each wearing of 28 La Pausa is 8 sprays, yet, the bottle looks barely used! I guess it is better than seeing it drain too fast!

Now there’s a great idea, labeling bottles with dates! I haven’t finished a bottle in at least 10 years and some of those are still in my collection. It would be fun (or horrifying) to see how little I’ve used over that time. I keep stockpiling but never use things up.

I’m dragging along today. Work and the dreary rain are making wish I were home, watching all my belongings pack themselves since it’s No Housework Day.
SOTD SL FdB which I got in the swap- I don’t think it was on my wish list, but I’m glad I have a decant now.

Thanks to the Sephora sale, I am wearing TF Noir pour femme. Sweet and smokey on me. I originally thought it might be to masculine for me, but I think I have grown into it. I think it’s sexy without the flirty. If that makes sense?

Ha! That’s the one I bought my brother for Xmas (not knowing that the pour femme was the one for women). Needless to say, he loves it and still to this day, I haven’t told him the truth. So, it truly is unisex, even though it says pour femme.

I got an unexpected bonus last year so I treated myself to that. I love it. But actually I love TF Noir Extreme- which is marketed towards men- even more!

It’s a deeply rich and lovely fragrance. It would be too much in heat if you are not careful, but I liked wearing it in winter!

No Housework Day sounds good. I’m all for that! I’m wearing Frances Denney Interlude. I have a little bit of the bath & body perfume and it is a rich dark brown color. I know it’s the real color and has not turned, as I wore this years back.

Hello, all. I’m very late posting today: usual suspect–I slept badly. Don’t know why, but my nights are full of horrible dreams at the moment, the sort you wake up from tense and gasping. I’ve been countering the sourness of my dreams with sweet perfumes, so thank goodness for gourmands– if they didn’t already exist, I’d be forced to invent them. It’s Friday here, and I actually could join in the project because I’ve discovered I do own a SG perfume. Instead, though, I’m wearing the equivalent of a perfume blanky–I’m wrapped up in the warm sweet softness of Loukhoum. This stuff must be about 500 calories a spritz, and I’ve gone a bit mad–sort of, “Here, there, and why not quite a lot there as well?” Just as well we don’t seem to have no-scent policies in NZ!

I’ll have to try Loukhoum the next time I’m at Barneys. I have a high tolerance for SWEET (I’m looking at you Indult Tihota). I wish you a dreamless sleep but if you dream, pleasant ones for you to wake up refreshed!

The littlest bit of bois d’armenie combined with plenty of sunshine. Even the current, attenuated version has a great smell–just doesn’t last long. Might have to pull out my secret decant of the old stuff soon… Also might have to betray the no housework day, sorry comrades.

I’m in Mitsouko, topped up from application after a shower last night.

I’ve decided it will be my ‘boo-boo scent’, and I’ve come up with a new mantra: “Mitsy’ll make it better.” I totally wiped out yesterday on the sidewalk in my front yard, and I’ve got scrapes (some quite nasty) and bruises on three separate limbs. Apparently, being a klutz is a lifetime sentence, and I’m destined to bite it at least once every decade. ????

Thanks! Ugh, slipping and falling on ice is horrible! Unfortunately, in this case, it was around 96 outside. I’m just clumsy, and I randomly tripped and fell. I seem to lose a battle with gravity once every 10 years or so; it’s how I roll.

Chaos at work ==> late post.

SOTD = Dior Eau Sauvage EDP, which is perfect for today. Cozy and rich, but not affable like Coromandel. Fulfills my desires and mood!

Don’t spend enough for Sephora VIB (nor do I want to), but the 10% Beauty Insider sale is this Saturday (April 9th). I should really pick up a full bottle of Eau Sauvage EDP then. Also, the L’Artisan Coffret of Timbuktu, La Chasse, and Mure et Musc is on sale right now at Sephora.

I gave that coffret to one of my nieces for christmas. If you are in store, they have somehow mixed the 2 x .17 oz (I think that’s the size) and the 3 x .17 oz in the same bin and are selling them for the same price.

Also, not sure if you have a Nordstrom by you, Nordies will match the discount. Lord & Taylor Friends and Family is coming up too starting tomorrow and it’s 10% off beauty.

      Not enabling…

I learned a new word today that may perhaps be helpful to those of you who fancy word games or Scrabble, ‘graupel.’. Apparently, that is the name given to the styrofoam not-quite-snow/not-quite-hail pellets that rained down on me as I was running errands today.

Not one of the fragrances in my current spring rotation was at all appealing on another February-like day, so I said Ha! to Mother Nature, two of us can play the same game! Then I reached backwards and chose Trish McEvoy No. 9 Blackberry and Vanilla Musk as my SOTD. Its sweetness and warmth were the scent comfort I needed today.

When I lived in the Rocky Mountains we referred to graupel as “corn snow”.

And we let the kids eat it. :P
