Monday scent of the day 3/21

Posted by Robin on 21 March 2016 257 Comments

Fragrance Foundation

Happy National Fragrance Day! Go ahead, wear perfume! And do tell us what you picked. (And it's a good day to go fragrance shopping — many stores are holding special fragrance events today.)

I'm in Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Three: Sugi. Tea at the moment is Richmond Park Blend from Upton.

Reminder: 3/25 will be Picture challenge, edition 1. Wear a perfume that matches the picture. We're staring off with Max Ernst, The Nymph Echo, 1936. (you can find larger versions here and here, and you can read the story from Greek mythology about Echo on Wikipedia.) (someone suggested the picture challenge, raise your hand if it was you!)

max-ernst-nymph-s

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Vanille Noire du Mexique by Maison de la Vanille. There is snow covering my daffodils so it felt like a vanilla day- I randomly picked one from my set, which was mostly ignored this winter as I sampled more interesting things.

Oh, I like this one on a cold winter day, almost a hint of a dark cocoa from the combination of notes.

Oh I loved Sugi–all 15 minutes of it!

I went to a new bar in Houston last night and one of the drinks had tuberose and vetiver in it! Sadly, they were out of it (of course!)

I went with Aromatic Elixir. I wanted to blast everyone away today. :)

That drink sounds really interesting. Sounds like you have an excuse to go back ;)
Also, mmm…Aromatics Elixir. Im still waiting for my newest bottle to age. I should probably decant a bit so it’s exposed to more air ’cause I’m getting impatient.

Of course I am dying to try it, though their presentation makes me wonder if they’ll have it back! They have several “optics” that hold the drink to be aged, then dispensed. Very cool. I had a different one with rum that was heavenly.

I think it’s cool that you’re aging your AE! I immediately though, “I should do that!” before realizing my bottle is at least 7 years old. Yipes!

Do you age a new bottle simply by leaving it alone for a specific period of time? How can you tell how aged it might already be? Or treat you open the bottle and let it breathe?

What I’ve always done is use a bit so there’s some air in the bottle, then shove it to the back of the cabinet until it begins to darken a smidge. It’s fine when it’s fresh but I really prefer the richness that develops when it starts to hit the age where the SAs would advise replacement. It’s a scent I’ve almost always had a bottle of and its just always better near the end (ditto the more recent versions of Coco).
Since my last bottle went missing a couple of years ago I’m having to be patient, but I’m really considering letting more air in the bottle and maybe even some light. I spray a smidge every one in a while to see hoe it’s going. AE seems to thrive on abuse so maybe I’ll move it to the bathroom cupboard.

I had no idea aging perfume was a thing. I’d read all about it going “off” from being exposed to too much heat/light, but aging is new to me.

          • MikasMinion says:
            21 March 2016 at 5:29 pm

It may be just me. I’ve found a few decants that were improved by a bit of evaporation too.

Most Chanels smell better after aging at least 6 months.

Happy Fragrance Day to you Robin!

I am going to try to do the picture challenge all week since I would never be able to narrow it down to one since art is so abstract.
Reflection Woman by Amouage for this picture. See what inspires me tomorrow.

Tea at the moment is a lovely Dragon Jasmine Green tea from David’s tea.

Is is aquatic/floral-and its not my favorite thing either. But some days it works-like today. Good scent for spring, and somehow I thought of it while looking at this picture for the community project.

I’m having a tough time trying to even *think* of possibilities for that image.

I am so not a visual person. I may either a) go with something that connects with the story or b) bag the challenge this week, if imagination fails.

Running through the Comme des Garçons series 3 incenses this week. Today is “Jaisalmer” which on me isn’t especially foody or curry-like. I get the pine resin and spices along with the incense itself. It has needed a top-up half way through the day.

Although I am not doing the community challenge, I picked out 5 perfumes to match the picture during the week (in my mind anyway). My alternative universe green scent for today is Guerlain Vetiver. :^)

Well my town is tiny but it’s now surrounded by commerce, so don’t know what I was even spouting off about. It was not easy to find a blood orange when I first moved here but I am now 15-20 minutes from Whole Foods.

So my apologies for kvetching when I have nothing to kvetch about (at least, on the blood orange front).

Memories! I didn’t see a blood orange until I was 25 and travelling by tandem bicycle through Italy and Europe. We were so clueless that we thought we had bought rotten oranges and threw the first one away. We ate the second one as we were so hungry, but grumbled about it. Don’t get them here, either.

I think I am completely mad, because almost everything Pierre Guillaume does is commonly described as slight and/or fleeting. I’ll report as I try them out – some sound just fantastic. But I wonder how many different ways I can say “vanished without a trace on my Bermuda Triangle skin”?

I didn’t sleep well last night either. Fell asleep on my stomach and the cat came in and fell asleep on my back. When I had to turn, she stuck on there like a starfish. When I woke up this morning all of the blankets were on the floor and I kept hearing this rhythmic clicking sound that I realized was coming from my neck bones unkinking.

First thing I saw on the dresser was my lil ol 5ml vintage Chanel 19 parfum so I dabbed some on my wrists. To me it is very strong and rich, but my husband can barely smell it.

I slept badly too – can’t shake off the daylight savings time nonsense. Our cats always get on my poor husband. Some nights all three will be vying for his spaces. They can be such a pain! I wake up right away if they try to sleep on me, and then they get ceremoniously punted off the bed.

I know what you mean about daylight savings. I still go to sleep at regular pre-DLST time which turns out to be about 1AM. Also snow last night! Oh well it’s pretty and probably our last of the year. My cat has slept with me since she was a baby (she’s now 13) and I don’t have the heart to push her off the bed so we just co-sleep the best we can. I’m really amazed I haven’t squished her.

I was just going through and looking for perfume sales, but the truth is that I have way more than I need and several perfumes that I absolutely love, so no need to buy anything new.

In the middle of the night our little dog was trying to jump on the bed, I woke up to help her at the same time as my hubby. He travels all the time and in my sleep fog I forgot he was home, so I screamed when I saw him out of the corner of my eye. Scared us both to death. ????

LOL. I once had a boss whose husband travelled a lot like her. They thought they were well-coordinated until they bumped into each other and almost did not recognize each other and also realized they did not arrange for childcare (although the kids were old enough to stay home by themselves and her parents lived nearby).

Holy cow!! Woke to gorgeous weather today- cool temps and full blast sunshine! Just enough bite in the brisk breeze to put a little giddy up in your step- just perfect!

SOTD I the always lovely PdE Cuir Ottoman. On another leather note, I received my split of “Horse Butt” ( aka Cuir de Russie ) and was a wee bit disappointed. It’s very very VERY quiet on me even with 2 hefty spritzes. To me, it smells like someone left their warmed up saddle from a recent ride in the flower bed, and forgot about it. It’s pretty short lived on me too.

On a third leather note, I got an email from SSS and Laurie is working on a leather and hay perfume! Color me overjoyed!! ????

    Happy Monday to all!

I almost jumped for joy when I received that notification! I love Laurie’s work and admire all of her scents even though some don’t work for me based on personal scent preferences (floralphobe here!).

Same here with the admiration. Though it was her some of her white florals that made me reconsider my dislike of them.

I adore CdR, but I’ve always thought it smells more like saddle soaped with a floral-iris soap than horse butt. I wouldn’t call it quiet, exactly, but I always spray more than twice.

Maybe 3-4 sprays is the ticket. Usually two sprays is my max and most often I am good with one solid spritz. Hope I don’t gas the entire block with 4 sprays ????

I like CdR but it certainly is a quiet one. Still, better than Box of Eels which is beautiful for about a minute then completely gone.
How exciting to hear of a new SSS that sounds more my thing than the recent releases.

I tried Cuir de Russie for the first time recently, and my initial impression was that it was quite nice, but with a bit too much, er, hiney, even for me. Then I sort of forgot about it for a couple of hours, and then when I went to bed I caught a whiff of my arm and was like, “What IS that? What IS that heavenly smell?” And then I turned to my husband and said “Smell my arm!!!” and he asked, “Is this foreplay?” and I said, “No! Smell my arm!” Poor, long-suffering man. Anyway, C d’R is now on my to-buy list. Too bad I missed the splitmeet on this one!

I’ve never gotten any sort of “horse butt”, “hiney” or “poop” from CdR, but it always depends on skin chemistry. Glad you ended up liking it :)

I agree that CdR is “quiet” in that it turns into a skin scent. But it is still detectable on me for about 8 hours after 4 sprays. Longevity was better with the parfum, of course, but I actually prefer the EdT because it is less floral (and thus more leathery).

Apparently some people get “poopy” notes from it, though. Wonder if they agree it is a “quiet” fragrance on them? :)

Should have possibly worn something more special for the National Fragrance Day, but I’m in JM Strawberry & Parsley. I just bought it, it smells nice, it’s good for spring and it goes with my garden-themed dress, so here we are.

It’s a reasonably good match for the picture as well, because of the greenness, but it’s too cute.

I guess it is fruity (or berry-y), but I don’t mind fruits if they are blended with other notes and don’t smell overwhelmingly synthetic, as they usually do in mainstream fragrances.

This is not a revolutionary fragrance, but it just smells so NICE to me, especially the first 15 minutes or so that are greener and tarter (tomato leaf and black currant make an appearance). If Blackberry & Bay is a strong and smart woman in her prime, taking bracing walks in the countryside, WS&P is her pretty young relative playing in the kitchen garden.

I forgot to mention a wonderful book on perfume I saw at a book fair on Saturday. It is an exquisite volume called ‘The Romance of Perfume’ by Richard Le Galleon, illustrated by George Barbier, published 1928, I think there were no subsequent editions, and so it’s very rare. It was printed on thick, creamy paper with gorgeous colour plates.. Unfortunately this ‘very good’ copy was over £200.
Does anyone elseknow of this book?

How interesting – I am not aware of the book but it sounds gorgeous and really interesting, given when it was published it would be a fun insight into views on perfume at the time. Sad about the £200 though…

Yes, it was a really fascinating insight into that era of perfumery, there was a wonderful poem about a Chinese caravan carrying perfumed silks & incense, and it was so pretty, and had a booklet with illustrations of perfume bottles in the back.

Wow, you smell great. As for that Carnal Flower, Austenfan, I have not tried it so far, but yes, I have a feeling it will suit me. The only Malle I tried is LR, and I love it, in its Paris-like ways. By the way, I just tried current Paris and really liked it. Sheer, yes, and in my personal utopia it would be called Eau de Paris and stand next to the old Paris we knew, but still, I really like it. Wanted to ask your impressions on it. BTW2, there’s a new Greenwald, very neutral and informative, I recommend it with all my heart.

Thanks for the Greenwald hint; I’ve just found the article.

Maybe you are right about Paris. But it’s my most loved perfume so any alteration is bound to affect me more than with any other fragrance. It seems to miss something that made the original so great. However, I haven’t done a side by side for a long time. About the Malles; I think that you may like Une Rose, Noir Epices and Cassie as well.

    Happy Fragrance Day!

SOTD = vintage Chanel No. 19 EdC
Inspired by the picture of the day – green, with a hint of darkness (animalic) in the opening, and beautiful floral. For some reason I think “purple” florals when I smell No. 19 – probably from the hyacinth. I imagine a green, hyacinth, and narcissus fragrance combination would fit the picture as well. Does anybody know of such a fragrance?

I’ve been reaching for DSH Jacinthe de Saphir frequently during this hyacinth season. To borrow the ad copy from Une Rose, it smells like a whole hyacinth plant pulled from damp soil — all gentle bruised greenery, billowing hyacinthine loveliness, and rich earth.

Happy National Fragrance Day for those who celebrate it! Unfortunatly I have to work, or I’d spend the day browsing the Aftelier website, mixing EOs, burning Diptyque candles and layering Guerlain extraits. Since I have to meet other adults (ugh), I’m wearing vintage Armani, which never fails to make me feel more focused and put togheter. They should relaunch this, as they did with their classic masculine. (Why not, good Armani folk?) Wishing you all a great week, perfume lovers, perfume nerds and perfume fiends everywhere.

Wearing Tauer Pentachord White today, obliquely inspired by this week’s image. It’s not a green scent, but it does have a sense of strangeness about it. I’ve always thought of it as a science-fictiony vanilla, or a cyberpunk vanilla. But I’ve decided it could also be a surrealist vanilla.

I’m sampling Lys 41 today…at first it reminded me of Baiser Vole (which I suppose is an obvious comparison) but now more white flower.

This is 2nd foray w/ Le Labo…I tried Rose 31 over the weekend and liked that one too. Not as masculine as some reviews seemed to indicate in my opinion. It was strong at first but strangely the longevity seemed lacking on that one…

I know Le Labo was acquired by Lauder last year…do you think any reformulations have happened already or? I imagine it takes some time…not a question of if but when…

I know some won’t agree with me, but I don’t expect any reformulations other than the usual IFRA-related stuff next time they issue an updated set of standards. I *do* expect that eventually, the brand will change. But I also think they’ve changed since they started anyway.

Light overcast, the merest hint of rain, temperatures in the low 60s F . . . perfect weather for Chanel no 19. Happily, I have it in bath powder and body lotion as well as edp, so am feeling quite cosseted.

Roma Imperiale is one of my top favorites. It’s about as ‘vanilla’ as I can get because it’s such a fluffy, herbal vanilla (not gourmand at all).

I hope you enjoy wearing it, even if it was a mistake. You smell gorgeous!

Hello everyone! I hope this isn’t too off topic, but I was hoping to get some advice about moving with a large perfume collection. My husband and I will be moving across the country (VA to Seattle, WA) this Summer and I am trying to wrap my head around moving over a hundred bottles of perfume, many of which are vintage (delicate and precious!). We will most likely use a pod to move our furniture, so I definitely can’t put my perfume in there (too hot, among other things). I have considered packing everything up and shipping them to my parents before the weather turns hot and then having them ship the boxes to Seattle in the Fall. This is my favorite option so far, but with so many bottles I’m afraid it might be extremely pricey to ship. I figure some of you must have experience with long distance moves, so maybe I could get some tips/ideas. Any thoughts are appreciated! TIA!

Please double check with your local post office but I think you are limited to the number of ounces you can ship in one package. You may not be able to ship your collection as a whole. I know they sometimes ask me when I ship perfume.

Oof goodness that’s a tough one. Ummmmmm. Gosh. And I assume you would have already said so if you had a car you needed to drive across the country anyway. Well this is very time-consuming, but I almost wonder about getting a one-way rent-a-wreck to drive yourself and your collection instead of buying a plane ticket? Obviously time constraints will rule that out for some folks, but if you did have the time, I’m not sure that rental + a few nights in motels might not shake out as cheaper than a plane ticket + shipping the whole collection twice.

Goes without saying this is prob a good time to pare down anything from your collection that can be easily replaced! (But I understand the main concern’s for the things that cannot be.)

Hm, yea that’s a good point. My husband is actually planning to drive the car and the dog to Seattle while I take a plane, lol (bad back). My fear is that the car will get very hot since the move will be in July. But perhaps I could ask him to keep the perfume out of the trunk and to take it into the hotel at night. That might actually be my best option. Thanks for the idea!

Oh! Yes, at least in my family, the inconvenience of bringing the boxes in and out of the hotel each night would be well outweighed by the however-many-hundreds of dollars saved, if a car was going anyway! Cool, that would be nice too not to have to worry about how shipping companies tend to fling boxes around!

I agree that this a good idea. The metal coolers (eg. Coleman) are sturdy and will stay cool for days when you put ice packs in them and leave them closed. Easy to handle and hard to damage. You might want to get a few, smaller ones so your husband won’t be hurt hauling them into the motel.

Bag up your bottles in moisture-proof freezer bags before putting them in the cooler, too. Press all the excess air out before sealing so that you can fit more bags side by side.

I’m not sure what shipping rates are looking like these days, but the last couple of times I did a long-distance move, Fed Ex was by far the cheapest way to ship boxes. My M.O. with delicate valuables, though, is to cram my car to the gills — that way I know nothing’s getting lost!

I drove myself, the dog, and all my perfumes and other liquids the movers wouldn’t take. The perfumes were wrapped and put in a sealed box and I kept the A/C on in the car. At night it cooled down enough that I didn’t worry about damage but I could have brought them in the hotel room. Everything survived in good shape.

Theorema Esprit d’Ete for me. This is a recent blind that worked out. Interestingly, it’s not really my usual “type” (whatever that is) of subtle, ethereal non-perfumey fragrance. I smell both jasmine and a little patch individually, but wear it for the scent it becomes as a whole – an interesting creamy musky melange. It’s not particularly summery to my nose and could be worn lightly to any occasion, anytime of year.

How nice to read you wearing and appreciating it! My father’s new partner (my mother died four years ago) found it in a really nice niche perfumery in Amsterdam where they live, they were there for the first time to buy my collective family birthday present (Trayee), and she sniffed various scents for herself and took a sample of Louanges. Now she will get it for her birthday! She wore Mitsouko most of her life, but clearly is ready to venture in different territories. I really like Louanges a lot on her.

I used to be a bit snobby about US perfumes ( the ones available in NZ ) because I thought they were all preppy or waspy…or Calvin Klein ( i wore Obsession ) but since visiting this site I have had a real change of heart and have bought CB I hate perfume, Skive, Dame New Musk and Olympic Orchids Blackbird (and samples) …all blind buys, based on everyone’s enthusiastic posts….and they are such knock-outs, and I reach for them all the time. Such a different aesthetic to mainstream US scents. I would love to try SSS, and Debaser. Happy perfume days and thanks everyone.

National Fragrance Day notwithstanding, I’m keeping to my Keep-It-Simple Monday theme since it always helps me re-center after a busy weekend. After several days of wearing patchouli-centered fragrances, today I’m in the mood for something non-earthy, light and fresh, and my hand reached for philosophy Falling in Love. Just enough of an uplifting scent to make Monday sparkle a bit without too many demands.

SOTD = Oriza Legrand Chypre Mousse

This week, I will try to wear perfumes that evoke the Max Ernst painting. First up is the weirdest of them all – Chypre Mousse. The painting is creepy and weird and green. I am getting loads of vetiver right now, cut through with wafts of roasted chestnut!

yep, Chamade, Le Temps d’une Fete, the DSH (jacinth de something, mentioned upthread, didn’t work for me, but other perfumistas like it). MFK’s Lumiere Noire pour femme is a rose/patch that also contains narcissus–but it’s dry, and I know you tend to prefer sweet. The narcissus is what appeals to me in that one.

I don’t have a FB or decant of any of these but I am pretty sure I have some of these in Mount Sample! I ended up looking up narcissus in Fragrantica and found a lot of perfumes with narcissus although probably not the dominant note — Wit, No.19 EDP and EDT, Coco Noir, Kelly Caleche and now I have too many choices!

We checked every outlet upstairs … And my room was messy and dirty it was soooo embarrassing. I spent the rest of my day cleaning my room, then showered and put on some Mitsouko EDP. Not bad, two classic perfumes in one day :-D

In, or was in, L’Eau d’Hiver, bless its sweet little evanescent heart…

It was chilly this morning, so Coromandel hit the spot.

I’m kind of excited about this Friday’s theme. I love Max Ernst. But I’m not sure what I would wear to go with that image. My first thought was Vero Onda, but I don’t think I have any. I know I had a sample at one point, but I’m not sure I still do. Anyway, I’ll figure something out.

Three-way wrestling match–Eau du Sud, Passage d’Enfer, Portrait of a Lady. I did wait until I got home to do this.

Just got back from a 10 day marathon road trip to northern California, had a hot shower and spritzed on some Cape Heartache, then I found my new bottle of Fruitchouli Flash and put on a spritz of that too. The fruit and wood notes in both are all playing nicely with each other.

It took me all day to browse through these comments and finally decide to wear Iris Ukiyoé (thanks Gi!) this evening. I love it so.
