Crack that whip, it's Friday! We're wearing leather for our weekly community project. Thanks to thegoddessrena for the suggestion!
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm wearing Tauer Lonesome Rider.
Reminder: On 3/4, wear a fragrance from Estee Lauder or Aramis, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: shown is the panda coin purse from the Animale collection at Loewe, $380 (!) at Nordstrom.
Lonestar Memories: dirty sexy campfire-smoky cowboy leather. I don’t believe in signature scents but if I did, this would probably be it.
It’s a really great scent! We’re cousins, but I’m a little better washed 😉
I do need to try Linesome Rider, but I’m half afraid it will be too irisy for me. Irises and me, we do not get along so well.
I considered Lonestar Memories for today but decided it was too strong for the small office. I’m glad somebody else chose it.
Commando till I get back from yoga, then I’ll wear CdL. It’s a big scent on me, and sometimes I struggle with the opening. But I do love the drydown.
Enjoy the yoga! I need to do that today…
You smell fab. That dry down is heavenly.
let’s see who’s also on team bottega veneta today..
I am…love this, need a FB!
If I you lived near me I would give you mine, too peachy for me.
I really dislike peach, but don’t get it from BV. I sometimes get a bit of berry, especially from the lotion, but usually it registers on me as well blended damask rose. Note discernment is not me strong point. 🙂
All of us smell wonderful! BV was one of those perfumes that I fell so hard and fast over… I went through a mini and then like five or six samples in six weeks and said,”That’s it. I have to buy this.” 🙂
I’ll be on team BV all weekend during a family trip. You smell fantastic!
BV with a little Cuir de Lancôme. Turned out wonderful and I think I’ll mix these more often. Now curled up with my “cheetah” blanket about to start reading “Girl Waits with Gun”. Happy Friday!!
Leather Friday inspired me to finally breakdown and buy Daim Blonde and EL Azuree. They won’t be here until next week but oh well. Now I’ll have something for next Friday’s EL project and more leather too boot!
I’ve often thought that BV and CdL smell similar. I bet you smell really good.
What an inspired layering combo! I’ll have to try that myself. Very cool.
Can we get shirts made? I’m on team BV!
This perfume gets so much love. I put some on a piece of paper at the mall a few weeks ago and thought nothing of it; maybe I need to go back and spray it on my skin to understand the enthusiasm!
YES! It really warms up on skin.
I had the same experience. It’s rather light on paper. I found it to need skin to really show itself.
Hey twin!
Count me in! Glad everyone’s so enthusiastic, I was afraid of sounding like a broken record. (Or worse, a leather wimp.)
A bit late today but wearing it to bed!
so so, I think we had the largest delegation yesterday, so let’s just virtually meet in Venice, sip some Bellini cocktails, and enjoy the squabbling between the CdR and CdL teams for second place from afar (I would like to see the famous lamb gambolling around, however)
I wore Diam Blonde yesterday as a warm up, after looking it up here, “blonde suede” I believe. I do like it but bought it for the heliotrope originally. Today was to Cuir de Russie but I needed a warmer, spicier scent for courage when I got up this morning so its Ambre Cashmere today. The best laid plans…
Hope it brings you plenty of courage. 🙂
I only have three leather scents, so today I’m wearing Bottega Veneta.
My fav! I always like to think I’ve just transported myself to Venice and am wearing some very beautiful clothes when I put on BV, even though I consider it a great go-to scent for everyday.
I love this one. So easy to wear, and being a fan of their handbags, it just completes the experience.
Hi twin! This one’s getting a lot of love today.
I’m debating if I should get the limited edition from a few years back. I have to stop by the boutique to see if still available.
Did the limited edition smell different than the regular BV or was it a special bottle?
Special bottle and more like an extrait
Vero Profumo Rozy voile d’extrait. It’s got more leather than the edp version. Ahhhh, nice and smooth!!
You smell fabulous!
I couldn’t find a leather that could “crack the whip” for me.
I am sampling Heeley’s Chypre 21 this morning..fitting for a beautiful sunny day (finally)
Last night I sampled Lubin Akkad, it is really beautiful but wears a bit masculine on me. And speaking of amber scents, I ordered a sample of Guerlains Ambre Eternal after LT review of it. When do we write our confessions to Donatella again? Tea this morning is my favorite breakfast..French Breakfast.
Carpe diem
I ordered a sample of it too, looking forward to sniffing it since I love iris and amber.
I am trying not to get my hopes up
I think there’s a lot of leather in Ambre Eternel. LT’s review of it puzzled me a bit, because he doesn’t mention spices, and I get a lot of cinnamon and cardamom in it. Let us know what you think when you get your sample, because I haven’t seen a lot of reviews of it.
Yes- we can discuss.
Not like LT to not mention spices..
It does smell leathery to me too, but I didn’t get a lot of spices or the huge iris note he mentions.
Duel (Annick Goutal). Must confess that I don’t detect any leather in this, just sharp bitter greeniness. 🙂
I get a tiny whiff of leather in it, very briefly. But it’s mostly a chewy, vegetal cologne IMHO.
But fantastic!
Yes!
I don’t really get any leather from Duel either. Now Eau de Fier….
Duel is a fantastic scent. You smell great!
I interpret the sweet background as a sort of mild smoky tea-leather. I smell it as being more a sweet scent than bitter, though it does have a bitter aspect, but I smell lots of perfumes as sweet when nobody else does. Either way, you smell great!
I just spritzed on a little Estee Lauder Azuree…as good a leather-based fragrance as there ever was, and way more affordable than most. I love that I have the classic art deco-ish bottle instead of the plain new one too, makes it even more of a pleasure to put on 🙂
The plain new one is plain 😉
Where does Azurée fragrance spray fall on the scent spectrum? Is it a diluted EDP?
Between Eau de Parfum and Parfum, according to Estee Lauder.
Thank you, Robin.
I wore Azuree for the first time yesterday and enjoyed it. Those new bottles of their classics are a bit sterile looking.
I know, right? The old Lauders deserve better, but I suppose it’s just not profitable for them to keep producing the fancier bottles. I think they’ve kept Knowing and Private collection the same for now, but I imagine their time is limited too. Not that some of the classic bottles were that attractive (I thought Cinnabar and Estee were kinda ugly, to be honest lol) but at least they each had their own.
Knowing is still in that twisty, distorted looking thing. True, some of those are not that attractive, but at least they had some variety and character. Although, most niche houses have uniform, signature bottles for all their scents. I kind of like different bottles for different scents.
It is better to have them in sterile bottles, though, then to have them discontinued. Which I assume was the other option. None of these can be huge sellers now.
True. It is impressive that they keep them going.
It’s so great! A new true love for me.
I am wearing Bottega Venetta, just so lovely, reminds me slightly of my Aunt Nettie, a very classy woman who was a buyer for Gimbles Dept. Store in Philadelphia in the 60’s, always sharp in her sheath dresses and beautiful pins…she wore Miss Dior.
I wish that was still the way to dress every day. I love that style. Your aunt sounds like a really neat person.
I wish I had an aunt Nettie. My aunts will be remembered for Avon perfumes and Kmart sweaters with shoulder pads.
You have a lot of company there.
I’m really far from leather today : I’m wearing the very clean Bobbi Brown bath!
You are the anti-leather 😉
I was going to wear Cuir Beluga but wanted something with a little more heft. However, I can’t seem to find my Bandit edp decant (which was almost empty; I should just cave and buy that bottle that’s been on my list for years) so am in one of my favorites today. Bottega Veneta over some Bliss Grapefruit + Aloe body lotion. It sounds odd, but actually works quite nicely to brighten up the BV, which I needed on this very slow going, sleepy Friday. 🙂
It occurred to me that I really haven’t explored leathers as a note too much yet. Really must get on it!
I don’t really have much leathers to explore.
I think we should have a chypre week..I have a lot of that!
We’re almost twins. I’ll have to try my BV with grapefruit lotion next time. It sounds nice!
Although I enjoyed the leather week, by Friday I am rather tired of leather, so I cheated. My SOTD is Chanel Bel Respiro, which is supposed to have leather. However, all I get from it is green notes. To my nose, initially it is a soapy, shampoo-like grassy green scent. After five minutes it changed into a “retro green” old-school-like fragrance. I am not sure whether I like it or not. Need to try it again to make up my mind.
I think Bel Respiro is a bit of a shape shifter. I have a decant of it, and sometimes I put it on and it’s all soap and meh. Sometimes I put it on and it’s a lovely diaphanous orange blossom with petit grain accords, and sometimes I put it on and it’s just some nondescript “green” floral.
I went through a whole bottle of this..but didn’t want to repurchase.
Chanel 5! I am a man but I love florals and fragrances that are a bit more on the feminine side, or so marketed.
Have been mad with no 5 lately. Sprayed EDP this morning after gym and now a bit of perfum spray in the afternoon for a top-up!
You smell wonderful. I love No 5 in all its forms. I wore it yesterday and it really made me feel good.
No. 5 smells fantastic on everyone!
You smell GREAT. And i agree: Chanel 5 is great fragrance for both men and women!
Join the club! I don’t care who a scent is marketed to, just whether it smells good or not, and I’m obsessed with eighties floral orientals and floral chypres. No. 5 smells FANTASTIC on pretty much anyone, and the parfum really is the way to go.
I think No. 5 is great on a man. I’m very ashamed to say I’ve never smelled the parfum. Is it really wonderful? *sigh* I need to go hassle a Chanel SA sometime to get a sniff.
I have worn the EDT and EDP for years, but the two times I thought to ask to try the parfum, was told there aren’t testers for it 🙁 I suspect this to be a lie.
Given the reputation Chanel is cultivating for itself I say we need to go in as a group, military style.
I wish my Mr. Spicebomb was so openminded about scents! I was wearing FM Bois D’Orage the other day, testing it from my Toybox, and I suggested it would smell good on him. His response? “Hmm, I think that’s not masculine enough for me.” And according to Malle, it’s got “serene manliness!”
It smells like a man’s sweaty armpit. I gave away a travel spray (not the one from the coffret).
Ha! I didn’t get any dirty/sweaty notes from it at all in my testing!
I’m wearing Masque Milano Montecristo, a nice musky-animalic leather + tobacco.
You smell great, Montecristo is so lovely!
I just have a little sample from Twisted Lily but I’m really enjoying it! It reminds me of Rien.
I have a 2 ml sample too, but it’s so potent, I only need to spray once or twice. It’s a shame they only do 100 ml bottles, I’d grab 30 ml without thinking, maybe even 50.
Wow, I’ve never heard of this one, but it sounds so interesting!!
Wearing one of my few leather scents, Le Galion Aesthete. I do love this but will likely steal my husband’s TF Tuscan Leather later when this fades.
I wore Tuscan Leather yesterday. Such a comfortable leather.
Happy Friday everyone!!
I’m back in Week-end (formally known as Week-end a Deauville).
I wore it Monday and couldn’t really detect a leather note. I applied a wee bit more today, and I’m picking it up now. This is a lovely scent!
I don’t like strong leather notes on my skin, but Week-end is soft and just right! 🙂
Nice pick!
Taking a note from Bee’s post above…
Who is on Team Cuir de Russie today? *raises hand*
Although I really wish I had some of my other leather scent samples I had last year. I love CdR, but I’d also love to be wearing either Anubis or TF Tuscan Leather.
Me!
*raises hand too*
We smell good!
Checking in right now as part of the Cuir de Russie team !
I am! Well, I am wearing a dab of the CR extrait with a shot of Jolie Madam on the side.
That sounds great, I need to try this combo, you smell great.
I am wearing CDR extrait too.
Me too!
The games have begun! Who will win? Team BV or Team CdR
HA! I was thinking the same. Or we could brawl – West Side Story style 😉
I love this idea, but if there were to be an NST brawl, our approach would probably consist of half of us on either side of a room, sipping tea and petting cats, telling each other how good we smell.
So true! LOL!
😀
HA.
THIS!
But of course mals’s lamb would need to frolic in between the groups in the room.
Almost spewed my afternoon tea. 🙂
Woot! High fives to all the CdR fans. I also think there needs to be a Team Cuir de Lancome since there are lots wearing that today as well. Three way battle!
Bravo to those who chose outside the box for leather scents today too. I don’t quite think CdR cracks any whips (maybe with a snarky/haughty look considering it’s Chanel?) but reading up on some of these other scents has me wanting to get MORE leather.
You know I’m with you in spirit 🙂 I like Tuscan Leather as well and really need to get myself some Anubis.
I loved Tuscan Leather, but can’t decide if I want to drop the change for FB. Although I think Anubis is cheaper, which is equally tempting, but something about Tuscan Leather is so raw and really appeals in the token “crack that whip” sort of way.
Another one for Team CdR.
My sample is of (unknown) vintage and on me, anyways, it has a whip-cracking leather along with a whole lotta barnyard. Not work-safe, that’s for sure!
Ooooh I’d love to get my hands on some vintage CdR. I’ve read a lot that it’s more leather-whip like than the more stern suede of the current version.
CdR is devine, not wearing it today but it is the only bottle in my collection that is low enough to make me nervous enough to buy another. Although I want to get the hight concentration next time.
I’ve heard the extrait is much nicer and sultry. I’d like to try that one too.
Cuir de Russie is my go-to leather scent but I do not wear it today because I just recently wore it and today I wanted to do something different. But it’s such a wonderful perfume! You (all) smell great!
Joining! Aahh… it’s addictive!
Cuir de Lancome again because I couldn’t locate my Cuir d’Ange sample before leaving the house this morning, and because I have meetings today that make me want to give off a Cuir de Lancome kind of vibe.
Also, because Lovestosmellgood mentioned getting leather from Songe d’un Bois d’Ete, I threw a bit of that on one wrist too. I can kind of see it, but whether I did or not, I still love wearing it.
Edit – *I’d* still love wearing it.
I love Cuir de Lancome! It is one of my fav iris fragrances too. So elegant.
Wonderfully elegant.
I wonder if the reason they discontinued it is that cap that didn’t fit. Literally everyone I’ve ever seen mention having a bottle has commented on it. And I won’t complain about mine, because I’m fairly certain that that’s what allowed me to get my bottle for about $35.
Right! I always wondered if the cap problem caused the discontinuation.
Yep! The cap on my bottle is weird too. And I got my bottle for like $35 on Amazon.
They really should just repackage it to a plain atomizer, EL style.
I must have lived under a rock because I didn’t know there were issues with the caps. I have a FB that I found at a discounter in a mall nearby, but I’ve not had any issues with the cap. It is a bit weird, but works just fine.
Didn’t they discontinue all the reissues? The cap problem is easily fixed, in case anyone here has one that is wonky. (There’s a thread about it on basenotes)
The cap suuuucks
Twins! I’ve really been looking forward to today to wear this beauty.
You smell lovely, twin.
I’m also in Cuir de Lancome because I needed it for some work meetings scheduled today. I hope its composed elegance gets me through the day without getting flustered.
You’ve got this!
I am trying hard to not put Songe on my FB list. Someone suggested this week it should be on the next split meet! Hope your meetings go well and enjoy this sunny day!
It tempts me too, despite Guerlain’s recent behavior. I’m really glad I found the samples I did on Ebay. I think it was a lot of ten 1 ml manufacturer spray samples, and when I priced it out, it was cheaper than a 10 ml decant would have been. So I’m good for now, especially considering how much I’ve already spent on perfume this quarter…:)
Yes, I have some of those sample in my que on the Bay for purchasing. It is much cheaper. Thanks for the suggestion
Monkeytoe (down further on the thread)is also in Songe d’un Bois d’Ete and detects some leather..
I think I was too wrapped up in the oud before to notice it.
Gaaah this thing is good.
Oh! Scent twins!
And knowing you, you probably have a great outfit to go with it, no? 🙂
I did, as a matter of fact! 🙂
Me too – go team Lancome!
Woohooo!
Add my vote for CdL. 🙂
We’ve got a whole CdL posse developing here.
I’m wearing Knize 10 today. Earlier today this really reminded me of polishing my shoes with good old-fashioned Kiwi polish. (I still have it but am very lackadaisical about polishing these days. I was born for shabby chic).
It’s now early afternoon and the scent has died down dramatically. So although I’ve enjoyed leather week as a prompt to try out a bunch of samples, nothing has cried out for a follow-up decant let alone a full bottle.
I don’t know which is most surprising: that Wednesday’s Cuir Beluga was probably the high point of the 5, or that Monday’s Cuir Mauresque wasn’t. And I’ve enjoyed reading other comments and recommendations, and ordered a bunch of samples including Olympic Orchids as a result.
“I was born for shabby chic” ????
I ordered Olympic Orchids…I keep imagining it as part of a sports team heading my way, for some reason. Somewhere between synchronised swimming and shot put.
LOL. I’m going to place an order today. I’ve also been looking for a blackberry bush fragrance – the smell of ripe, tart berries, dry grass, sun, and green leaves. It’s one of the smells of summer for me, as blackberries are rampant [read: problematic ;p] where I live. Turns out Olympic Orchids is just down the street from me, so I have high hopes! There aren’t too many blackberry-centric fragrances out there and the ones I’ve tried (Jo Malone and L’Artisan) didn’t do it for me.
Hmm. Cuir Beluga is one of those scents that I can only wear if it’s freezing cold, otherwise the powdered almond completely suffocates me. I can see how that note could be tempered on a man and also be really sexy.
Wearing Cuir d’Ange today…
I reread Robin’s review of it from 2014 where she noted she is still waiting for the Hermessence line to do jasmine…agreed…I look forward to that day.
Happy Friday!
We can hope! But Monsieur Li may be all we get.
Maybe they haven’t found a jasmine field they could buy? Or was that Chanel?
Ha!
Twins! Cuir D’Ange for me also. I’ve learned that it isn’t shy on me. The first time I wore it I massively over sprayed. Love it.
I am wearing Guerlain Songe d’ un Bois d’Été which is leather and spicy woods in the best of the latter day Guerlain style.
I am drinking a cup of Wood Dragon Oolong which is the Chinese version of Kukicha.
Tea and Songe BE! Sounds like a perfect friday!
Songe d’ un Bois d’Été was on my short list for today’s perfume choice but I ended up with a different choice. Still, this one is great – enjoy your day!
You and your teasers, Undina!
You smell fantastic.
Cuir de Russie today. No matter how many other leather-themed perfumes I try (and I do love some of them), this one is the greatest.
You smell perfect. What other leather perfumes do you love?
Heeley’s Cuir Pleine Fleur probably comes second, at least it’s the second-most worn. Also Eau d’Hermes, HdP’s 1740, Masque’s Montecristo and Tango, Maria Candida Gentile’s Barry Lyndon. Love Bandit, too, although I primarily perceive it as a very green galbanum.
How about Cartier IV Fougueuse?
It is a love
I’m feeling much better so I decided to just go for it! SOTD is the rich, mouth watering original Donna Karan “Signature” from that goofy black swan bottle. There is definitely both leather and suede accords in this one with a big fat jasmine. I rarely wear this fragrance, but I’m glad I have some.
One of my favorites and criminally underrated.
I agree – it just came out at the wrong time. Before Fragrance Blogs (BFB). 😉 I never smelled the version that came out a few years ago with the other DK classics in those austere tall bottles. I wonder if they are still making those?
I’m not sure, but I have one of those bottles and it’s still delicious.
Glad you are feeling better!
Thank you!
Cuir de Russie, current EDT, current extrait, and the last mini drop of my vintage extrait de parfum sample.
Even though I’m not Chanel’s biggest fan, this is my favourite leather.
Wait… You are NOT wearing it over the Cuir de Russie body cream??! (faints) You are doing it all wrong! 😉
🙂
I must have mislaid it, else I would have put that on as well 🙂
LOL… I do wonder, was there ever a CdR bath&shower line? I think I’d love to have a CdR soap, maybe an old-fashioned round one with a rope…
I’m very sad that you’re not in Brussels and I could smell you.
Life is full of these trials, isn’t it?
You totally win and are the leader of our CdR posse!
SOTD = Memo French Leather, which is light on the leather and fragrantly floral! This suits my skin very well and is probably my favorite of the Memo line!
I need to try that, I have Irish leather and a sample of Italian leather. I hear the African one is quite good as well.
The Italian was too smoky for me, and the Irish was too Irish Springy. 🙂 This one is surprisingly pleasant. I might try to get a decant of it when my sample is used up- I really think I might wear it for meetings and such.
African Leather is my favorite so far, but haven’t tried the French yet.
I’m in vintage Diorling EDC, and is it ever gorgeous! Only have a small decant, and will be sad when it’s gone. Might have to stalk the ‘bay for more.
I only have a tiny bit, but it’s of the rereleased edt. Pretty stuff.
About 5 years ago a friend sent me a tiny sample of vintage Diorling and, I think, it was the first time when I felt like crying for the realization that I might never get to wear this beauty once the sample is gone. I tried eBay, but the juice from the bottle I got wasn’t in as great shape as the first sample was – so I stopped wasting money just in hope that the next one might be better.
You smell great!
Thank you … and Yes! Exactly how I’ll feel when this sample is drained. I’m pretty hesitant about ebay stuff, so mostly I stalk and dream. 😉
How would you compare it to the current formulation, just out of curiosity? Those vintage Diors always sound amazing.
I’ve only tried this little bit of vintage Diorling – from what Angie says in her review somewhere on this site, the current formulation is weak and wan and ordinary in comparison … so I haven’t been tempted. Mals or Undina might be able to compare and contrast old vs new.
Following Deva from a few days ago, I am wearing Onda extrait, which I think technically is a vetiver, but smells leathery to me. A deep, dark, murky leather, a submarine leather, a gator leather. I’m glad leather week has inspired me to pull it out, because it’s something I consider so precious that I really don’t wear it enough!
Gator leather! That’s intriguing.
Onda is the BOMB! You smell divine????
Bandit baby!! *cracks whip…whacks own hand by accident, cries*
Ha! Thanks for my first laugh of the morning ????
HA!
LOL!
Bandit is the bitchiest leather I own, and in a GOOD way! 🙂
Big smile 🙂 Mostly because I identify 😉
That would totally be me!
Mine would be *cracks whip; wraps it around legs; trips; falls* 😉
:))
We may be the same person.
Indy?
I did do a stint as an archaeologist–but it was more “avoiding heatstroke” and less “avoiding giant boulders”.
Totally flaked on the project as I was getting ready this morning. I’m in Puredistance White.
Ahh, you smell wonderful.
I’m wearing Sarrasins. I don’t get much of a leather note, but The Guide says it’s there. I just think it’s beautiful.
My favorite jasmine. It does feel a bit leathery.
You smell gorgeous. I don’t get much leather from it either, but it’s just so beautiful.
I had forgotten about the leather in Sarrasins. Good thing I haven’t put any perfume on yet.
Vintage Cabochard again for me, the parfum today – I guess I figured out who is fairest of them all in my book 🙂
I will come back to this thread for all the great ideas of more leathers to try! Can’t believe I’ve never tried Cuir Lancôme, I am clearly missing out.
Twin! The magic mirror speaks to us both!
I get the sense from reading your Cabocharderie that you sort of like this perfume 😉
I haven’t smelled it since the the late 70s but remember liking it very much. I hope to someday happen across a bottle.
Cabocharderie is a way of life! 🙂
Haven’t showered yet (waiting for the toddler to nap), but I have a few choices from my sample collection: Atelier des Ors Cuir Sacre, Ramon Monegal Mon Cuir, or Cuir Baluga… I probably will go with one of the first 2 since I haven’t tried them yet.
Hardly whip cracking but enjoying the lovely and springy Kelly Caleche and feeling nostalgic as this was my gateway perfume that sent me down the rabbit hole.
Kelly Caleche is so lovely. It took me a long time to come around to it.
This was an early love in my perfumista “career”. I have drained a FB. I still love it, along with the parfum.
Dzing!
Another for team Dzing! Whee!
SOTD: Ugh, month end, so that means total concentration! Crack the whip!
For today’s leather theme I am wearing Cuir de Lancome. What is interesting about this perfume is that there is a rich haylike/saffron scent and a smoky sweetness. More like the inside of a very well to do old auntie leather purse who carried candies, cigarettes, lipstick and spritzer of perfume for freshening up. I love CdR but this is exceptionally pretty.
OOTD: High waist dark jeans, blue tunic and striped pink scarf, brown booties.
Yes. CdL is the smell of my mother’s good leather dress-up purse, ca. 1973. (No cigarettes, but lipstick and perfumed hanky.)
No whips cracking, but I love it. Joining you today.
😀
CdL is definitely a proper complex fragrance. Every time I wear it, I smell something different.
It really is a lovely fragrance. You smell your arm throughout the day and it’s subtle changes are a comforting delight!
SOTD is Cuir de Lancome. First time trying this one. I like it. It doesn’t have that hospital soap note to it that some other leathers have.
I almost skipped out on the challenge today. I wanted something comforting, but also strengthening, and I didn’t know of a leather offhand that would do that. Last night we got a call that a client’s child had committed suicide, and they needed us to help them get things lined up to get the premises cleaned up and things replaced if necessary. I don’t know the client or the kid personally, but it hit me really hard. Suicides always do. Obviously it makes me feel so bad for the family that has to cope with it. But it also makes me ache for the person who chose that path. Especially when they’re young (21 in this case).
I’m so sorry for the family.
Cuir de Lancome has become my hospital/doctor’s office scent, particularly for times when I need backbone *and* comfort.
Thanks. I am as well. It’s a small family and I can’t even imagine what they’re going through right now.
CdL is proving itself very capable in the role I’ve asked it to play. I’m glad I had a sample of it hanging around.
I am so sorry. Sending hugs from Brussels.
Thank you Annikky.
Suicide is so grim, especially in the young. And so devastating for the family.
I hope Cuir de Lancôme does it’s magic.
His poor family. I thought about them all evening. I don’t know how you pick up and go on in that situation.
Thank you. It is doing an excellent job.
When I still worked in hospital as a very junior doctor in Internal Medicine, attempted suicides were almost part of the daily routine. I’ll never forget the pain of an elderly man, whose wife had done a very serious attempt on her life and was being admitted into intensive care. He was completely bewildered, poor man.
That would haunt me, too, even if I didn’t know the person. You are wonderful to be so caring. Hoping something wonderful and uplifting comes along for you today.
Thank you Laila. I was having an emotionally low week anyway, and as someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, and has had suicidal thoughts in the past, it always feels like a personal blow, even when I don’t know the person well. I wish this person had had access to the resources I’ve used to get help in the past.
It’s Friday. If nothing else, Saturday will come and that will be uplifting. Thank you again.
So glad you made it through and that you’re here with us now.
I’m so sorry. It’s such a sad, selfish, horrible thing. I’m very sorry for you and all involved.
Thank you. It is a completely self-centered thing, born out of desperation. I was trying to explain that, again, to my mother last night. Most suicidal people are lashing out at themselves, no one else. They typically can’t even conceive of the hurt they’re causing others, because they think their life has no value.
I think there can be both personal desperation and hostility towards the survivors. I’ve been known to some pretty gruesome suicides both through work and family members of friends. This doesn’t mean the person was evil. Just very sick.
I didn’t mean to imply that I wasn’t sympathetic toward the victim. I know what hell wonky brain chemicals are, and the lack of control one has over them. The selfishness is in the action rather than the intent, but it still makes me angry for the people affected.
It may seem selfish to someone not acquainted with the circumstances and the victim, but I believe it is out of desperation and a despair so deep we can’t comprehend it.
I certainly didn’t mean to imply a lack of sympathy for the victim, nor was I implying that they were to blame. My anger is at the situation, not specifically at any person. I have been close to several people who lost loved ones to suicide, two of whom were first on the scene. I can’t help but feel anger at how their lives were affected.
There are so many victims with suicides and hence so much anger and sorrow. I absolutely understand your response MikaMinion and that of others.
So sad for everyone involved. The feelings and grief are so complicated.
They are. I wish I could do something for his family. I’m going to keep an eye out, and if they have a memorial service or visitation, I’m going to go. I feel like I need to do that.
I admire your compassion. I think having someone care helps the healing process.
How heart-breaking, for the child and for his parents <3 I hope you (and they) find some kind of closure.
How sad for everyone.
I do not know what you do, but it sounds like a tough job. Strength for you today
It’s hitting you hard because you’re a kind-hearted, compassionate person. It sounds like you’re in the right line of work. I’d be skeptical of someone who wasn’t emotionally effected in this situation. I’m so sorry for everyone involved.
So sorry.
So sorry for the devastation this family must be feeling. And how good of you to want to offer your support.
That’s really sad. And you are so kind, and also very brave to offer your help in this situation. Wish you a calm and peaceful weekend!
This is very difficult. I have experienced three suicides close in, one very close, and one thing it has taught me is that what a person can cope with in terms of (emotional) pain is a very individual matter. It is impossible to judge another person unless you have walked their path, with their feet in their moccassins.
CdL is a VERY comforting scent, beautiful ,haylike and seems to evoke warmth. I hope it is doing magic for you. I wish the family comfort in their overwhelming grief and I wish you ease of the heart over this.
I am so sorry, and so sad for all.
My closest friend committed suicide 15 months ago, and I know the desolation, its ripples reach very far.
I wish consolation and peace for the family and for you.
I am so incredibly sorry. Wishing you peace on your journey of grief as well.
Thank you.
I am so sorry. Hope the CdL provides as much comfort as is possible.
Ugh, so sorry you have to deal with this and even sorrier for the family.
Feeling quite tearful as I read these comments. None of us can ever truly understand how another person thinks and feels, and it is a dreadful thing to realise that someone you knew has been in a place where killing themselves felt like the right thing to do.
I’m so sorry… That poor family. It breaks my heart when people are in such a dark place that they see no hope and feel so lost.
Thank you for being here with us today, newbiebex. Hugs from northern Virginia!
How absolutely awful. Glad CDL is cheering u, my favourite leather to date.
Such a cute panda!
So happy to be home
Post shower it will be Indult Reve n Cuir
Tauer starts shipping today…yippee!
I just wore Reve en Cuir the other day, it is soft and lovely. And I am also anxiously awaiting my Lonesome rider!
Happy Friday everyone. I’m coming out of hiding with Arquiste Aleksandr, a very nice violet leather. I wish I still had a sample of Sous le Your de Paris to compare it to. I remember quite liking that one.
I’ve got a small giveaway for a Vancouver area resident. I’m ordering a bottle of Kyoto from The Perfume Shoppe which leaves me $8 short of free shipping. Leave a comment here to claim an $8 Perfume Shoppe gift certificate and then email me at jonas cetacean at g mail dot com.
Also, I’m considering splitting away a few 5 ml decants of Kyoto when it arrives. It would be about 20 CAD shipped to the States, 15 CAD within Canada. If anyone’s interested I’ll create a listing on the split meet page.
Nice to see you! I used to love Alexandr, but then it stopped working for me for some reason. I should give it another go.
Thanks. It took a few wearings for me to warm up to it completely. I’m not sure that it’s full bottle worthy but I have had a lot of fun with my little sample.
Dibs, Jonas! Will write you…
Okay then, thanks.
Oh, and is the first part of your address all together, or is there some underlining etc. happening?
I’m wearing Cuir de Nacre, which Angela described as ” like I’ve been sleeping in a leather trunk on a bed of peppery iris and moss.”
I first tested that one the other day. It’s nice. Didn’t grab me enough to join the to-buy list (especially with my two backup bottles of Cuir de Lancome!) but it’s a good one.
Do you get that from it? I’m wearing it today and don’t pick up any of those notes.
I get lots of iris and dry leather, but to me it doesn’t seem as mossy as she describes it.
As I thought there will be lots of Cuir de Russie and Bandit, I decided to go with Nanban. It has much going on, but I get a lot of leather from it. Nice stuff.
Oooh, I was wondering what you’d wear today! I don’t get as much leather as you do – it’s a tobacco powerhouse on me – but you smell lovely 🙂
Thanks! I’ve realised that I don’t own as many leathers as I thought – I guess I like the ones I regularly wear so much that I don’t feel any lack. Also, while I like leather very much, I do wear it less often than some other categories. Bottom line, I should explore a bit 🙂
Oh! Okay, that is different!
Apologies that I have forgotten, but have you tried this?
I have! I remember testing this last year.
I only tried it once, and I seem to remember mostly spices and smoke.
Slightly surprised you haven’t got a whole collection of leathers, as you seem to like smoky notes so much.
I do get spices and smoke as well (less of the latter), it’s definitely not a one-note fragrance. But there is lots of that old library room kind of leather in it to my nose.
And yes, not that many FBs of leather as I thought. One reason for this is also that I often buy leather scents for J and borrow from him, but he goes through his fragrances very fast and then I’m dry again 🙂
Scent twin 😉
Lonesome Rider all the way!
Hey twin! We are a small group today.
It was my second choice 🙂
Lonesome Rider here too.. Just got my sample yesterday, easier to wear than Lonestar Memories!
We smell wonderful!
Leather SOTD: Habit Rouge
Hello, NST! I’ve been a wallflower here for a while, but I decided it was time to ‘officially’ join in on the fragrance fun…
Hello and welcome! Hope you’ll keep joining in. And of course you smell great!
Thanks! I’m looking forward to participating as much as possible. And, since I almost chose Lonesome Rider, I should add: you smell great, too!
Welcome! I recently fell in love with Habit Rouge Dress Code so I KNOW you smell fabulous!
Thanks! I haven’t smelled Dress Code, but I’m sure it’s nice; I’ll have to sniff it when I get a chance. (Actually, I lucked out with HR because it was a semi-blind buy–based only on knowing what Shalimar smells like & how HR tweaks that.)
Welcome!
Thank you!
Welcome! And I’m giggling at your screen name 🙂
Thanks! Ha, well it’s in reference to the bush, more than the tar-related substance, but… ???? The creosote scent of the desert after a monsoon is one of my favorite smells.
I finally got to experience that this last autumn when I got caught out in a thunderstorm while hiking in Big Bend–amazing scent. I had heard about it but had not expected it to be so lovely and affecting.
I’m sure that was quite an experience! It’s the most evocative desert scent to me. In fact, I once visited Kew Gardens and happened to step inside the glasshouse with desert flora right after it had been watered, so I was immediately meet with the distinctive smell of ‘home’. And while my brain was trying to not short circuit, I realized I was standing face to face with a creosote (complete with botanical labeling)!
BTW, I noticed above you mentioned being an archaeologist!? What a funny world– that’s my background/training!
Cuir de Lancome today. I’m guessing that I have lots of friendly company with this one. (Not sure I’ll have time to go back and read all the remarks until later in the day.)
I don’t have much leather in my collection. This is the only real leathery leather, I think. I wore Traversee du Bosphore a few days ago, which gives me some leather and seemed more appropriate for the early spring weather we’re having. I also have Memoir, but such heavy-hitters are probably about due to be figuratively put away for a while.
I like to layer Traversee du Bosphore with deeper fragrances like SSS Champagne de Bois or Tauer’s LADDM… it seems like those deeper raspier woody notes cut the sweetness in TdB. It’s so soft and puffy a little rough makes it more interesting.
Testing Dame Perfumer Leather Man today: ‘a blend of gurjun balsam, iris, jasmine, gardenia, water lily, sandalwood, amber and leather.’. I very much enjoyed the initial balsam note, now it’s become a light, tan leather scent underscored only slightly by a hint of floral. Nicely blended, and if I enjoyed wearing leather I would enjoy this one. Later, I’ll wear Jolie Madame, which is definitely more my cuppa.
Hoping for a quiet day and weekend. After getting the post-op kittens settled in last night, we had a small grease fire in the oven. Luckily, the nearby fire extinguisher put an end to it before any damage was done and windows opened to the cold night air quickly got rid of the smoke. But for a few brief moments, quite terrifying!
Wow. What a not fun surprise. I was hoping for a kitty update 🙂 They’ll be back up and romping about in no time.
I posted earlier on yesterday’s thread. Now they are quietly bird-watching together and looking a bit more alert. Usually bird-watching requires the kitten/monkey/squirrel to climb the screens for a better view, but thus far she is content to emulate her sister’s quieter behavior. Thank you for caring about them.
Oh my goodness! So glad it wasn’t worse.
Hope that kitty tummies are healing well. Easier when your sister is going through the same thing, I’d imagine.
Oh no! Definitely not what you needed yesterday, or ever. Glad you got it under control and glad your kitties are calm. Mine were totally hyper, chasing each other around. We gave up on trying to stop them from disregarding all post-op instructions and they healed fine 🙂
Glad you’re ok! And nice work being prepared!
I reserved my leather pièce de résistance for today: Hermès Doblis, from the 2004 reissue. It is a dry leather with no sweetness to it, a bit austere on me, but very elegant, like a Hermès Kelly bag. Definitely a 5 star leather.
Lovely, and rare!
Gasp!! Reading this just took my breath away. I will try my best not to covet your treasure 😉
Wow.
Wow!
I was planning on M for today, but wore it yesterday (and apparently it blew my mind and I forgot to actually post my SOTD). Today I’m armored-up in Hard Leather. I almost forgot I had this decant, dunno how it wasn’t my first choice all week. It really is one of my favorite leathers. I smell wonderful.
We were twin sides yesterday! I briefly considered Hard Leather today but changed my mind!
Does anyone detect leather in Creed Love in Black or is that the iris confusing me?…
I’m wearing Parfumerie Generale’s Arabian Horse, a stunning leather fragrance with notes of hay, wildflowers, narcissus, honeyed amber and woods. It is lively, exuberant, sensual and unrestrained. No whip needed!
This:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apXGSzStESI
love horses!
Ditto!
Twins!
Hi twin!
This sounds so beautiful, I must try this. And I took a break from work to watch the horses. Stunning!
I’m glad you liked it!
That sounds stunning.
It is!
When I was a small child I had big plans to grow up and be a horse. When I was 7, I finally accepted this was physiologically impossible and was absolutely crushed. I still haven’t recovered. Beautiful video and that fragrance has been on my radar to sample.
Funny! My aunt wanted to be a horse when she grew up, too! Once she accepted it was not her fate, she rode horses, and I inherited her (black velvet) riding cap. I wore it when I rode many many years ago and still have it. I doubt it could be used today as it would be deemed not suitably protective.
I hope you will get a chance to try it!
I may just have to get that panda coinpurse but would not want to dirty it up by using it for coins.
SOTD = Canoe Skive
I don’t recall if it was pixel or ellebelle (or someone else) who mentioned testing Skive and since I had never heard of it, I had to look it up! A 1/4 oz bottle was available for $52 (Travel-size! Practically free!), so I jumped on it. As an aside, to get free shipping I was tempted to purchase the $300 tote bag, but I didn’t. With the money I saved, I should be able to get the panda with a clear conscience!
So how is Canoe Skive? It’s a surprisingly smokey incensey gourmand leather on me. It’s gourmand from the nutmeg and saffron (notes according to the website). There’s supposed to be tea in there somewhere but I am not smelling it. Overall, it reminds me of the Roja Dove Christmas candle which remains open but unlit scenting my closet quite nicely. Skive comes on very strong on first application and quicly settles into a skin scent. I may have to get a 2nd bottle for on-the-go respritzing!
i never thought to put a candle in my closet. i’ll have to do that! thanks for the idea hajusuuri 🙂
Sun Mi, I don’t burn candles ever and this method allows me to enjoy candles!
It sound very familiar… I might have a sample of this one in my box of natural perfumes that I never come around to testing. I’ll check it out tonight.
If you don’t have it, you know where you can get a sample
😉 !
I always get Whisky barrel and peat from the opening…takes me straight back to Islay. I like the way it settles down but it honestly doesn’t give me much of a leather vibe.
It is not very leathery on me either but I could definitely identify it.
Hajusuuri, I’m not sure who mentioned Skive first, but I was an early promoter. 😉 After reading Luca Turin’s 5-star review and others, including Colognoissieur, I also ordered it unsniffed. It comes wrapped in such beautiful leather, too!
I hope the natural perfumer who composed it does more scents that are readily available; her site says she does commissions.
You definitely put me on to it – lucky for me. The perfumer (J. Hannah Co.) has done Sunset Bouvelard, inspired by the film. She doesn’t send to NZ so I haven’t tried it…sounds like another job for the amazing NozKnoz!
I use the leather wrap Skive came in for my fountain pen and a pencil.
That’s brilliant repurposing of the leather wrap – so soft, so luxurious. I have to check out this Sunset fragrance!
Kanuka, thanks for letting me know about Sunset Boulevard – must look for that. I love your idea for repurposing the wrap, too.
I’m sure the folks at Canoe Goods must have enjoyed sending their creations off to such a beautiful place.
nozknoz, you’re that someone else! Thank you for mentioning it. You get an enabler’s pin!
Turnabout is fair play! 😉
So glad for your review of Skive! I have almost bought it a few times, but have hesitated at the ” purchase now” moment.
The Vancouver swapping circle is meeting today at Caffe Artigiano, 740 West Hastings, at 1:30. (Just invited Jonas before realizing that’s one person *not* in Vancouver!)
Have fun! Hope you all find some new ‘fume loves.
Kelly Caleche from a spray sample. Not enough leather for me, very subtle. Probably a good a good leather for people who don’t like leather????
Molinard Cuir! Waaaaay less interesting when dabbed on than when spritzed. I need to get a bunch of teeny spritz bottles and transfer all my dab samples into them.
I almost didn’t participate in today’s challenge because (like some others here) I needed something loving and comforting; my 28-year-old back is acting like a 70-year-old back and is in so much pain that I haven’t slept more than a few hours a night in a week. In the end, though, the warmth of the leather has been pretty comforting.
Ugh. Hope your back shapes up. I have some stretches I do for mine when it acts up but when it’s really bad I fortunately have some pretty effective Rx muscle relaxants that help with both pain and sleep.
Arabian Horse for me today. After I move I’ll probably treat myself to a bottle. Back to packing
For some reason this name is making me giggle. And think of the Black Stallion book series. 😀
After 4 days, I just could bring myself to do leather again this morning. Plus I was a little sick during the night and still had to be at work very early. So I needed a pick me up : Rose Ikebana.
I meant *could not
obviously…
The plan was for me to wear Cuir Impertinent from the Mugler Les Exceptions collections. But on me, it smells way too much like Spicebomb–without the projection or staying power.
Instead, I went with AC Gold Leather. I really like the slightly boozy, tangy thing it does.
Nice one!
Mmm, Gold Leather is nice. It was an instant love for me.
Scent twins! And much thanks to Kevin’s mention of this (sometime last year) which intrigued me to try it.
Add me to the Bottega Veneta list. AKA, I want to participate but am not really in the mood for leather. 🙂
I do love this though. It’s so easy to wear.
It’s funny but that “easy to wear” was one of the reasons why I decided NOT to wear BV today: I wanted something a little bit … rougher (?) – so I ended up wearing another very mild leather (Byredo’s Black Saffron 🙂 ). But nobody promised that this hobby has to be logical…
I am LOVING black saffron these days!
That makes complete sense to me. It’s good to embrace the days you can handle the big guns, even if you end up having a taste for something else.
Commando thus far. I keep going back and forth between CdR, no 19 and Sarrasins. Thank goodness that someone reminded me that Sarrasins has a leather note in it.
BTW, my big bottle of Jubilation 25 came last night. I think that Amouage tweeked the bottle a little bit. I can’t really explain but the cap is now magnetic just like Chanel’s Exclusifs line. But I’m thinking that it’s the color of the cap and perfume itself that’s leading me to that conclusion.
I hadn’t realized that the caps weren’t always like this until my bottle of Epic arrived from Fragrancenet with a non-magnetic cap. The bottle of Fate someone VERY generously gave me has a magnetic cap and I love how it clicks into place every time. Haven’t compared the bottles otherwise though.
It’s been quite a while since I bought a full bottle of Amouage so I did have to look at another huge bottle that I had. I just give up right now with the comparison. Now I’m kind of wishing that Fragrancenet would start leaving me alone with the 25% off coupons. I’ve already maxed out the perfume budget for the next couple months. It’s definatly a no 19 day.
Amouage started magnetic caps in 2014 with much discussion on Basenotes that the scents had been reformulated along with the cap change. Non-magnetic caps seem to be sought-after bottles these days.
I love those magnetic caps. A friend and I went to the Chanel counter and just played with them for a while. The click is so satisfying.
I think all the caps are magnetic now. I just checked my Amouage bottle and it came from BG and is magnetic
Dzing! all the way today. Thought it was vile when I tired the sample a few years ago; now it’s one of my all-time favourites. I don’t know what saddle leather smells like in real life, but apparently this is it.
So funny how that happens! I love tons of perfumes I used to consider vile.
On the Cuir de Lancome team today!
In other news, my son just got accepted to the summer session at West Point. He really wants to attend a service academy (though he’s leaning more toward the Naval Academy than the USMA), so this is a good early step.
Also got an unexpectedly good report from his eye doctor yesterday, so it looks like he won’t even need a waiver for his vision problems. Last year his vision was 20/50 corrected in his left eye, but now it’s 20/30, corrected. His doctor is puzzled, because amblyopia does not normally improve past the age of 9.
Congrats on the scent, the acceptance, AND the sudden improvement in your son’s vision! Would not have known that could happen but glad for his sake that it did.
Congrats to your son. My dad was a West Pointer… Love that place, it’s so beautiful.
Congrats! That’s quite an accomplishment. Be proud!
Ooh! Congratulations! Your son must be thrilled!
Oh, good for him!!
Congrads!!!
That’s all really great news, congratulations to you’re son!
Yay! Congratulate him for us!
Congratulations! That’s an achievement!
All kinds of great news, congrats!
That’s terrific news all around. Congratulations! I’ll bet you’re so excited you can’t sleep tonight.
Began the day with Hiram Green’s Voyage, lovely with a hint of leather. May wear Traversee this evening, or maybe Journey. Wish everyone a safe and good weekend!
Have a great weekend as well!
I thought about TdB but for me it’s more of a hot weather perfume and even though it’s very warm here in N. Calif. now, it’s still not hot enough for me for that perfume.
Vintage Cabochard for me– my favorite leather scent, favorite whatever-the-weather scent, favorite forever-and-ever scent. For me, no other fragrance can surpass it; I have a deeper relationship with Cabochard than with any other fragrance, even my beloved SL Arabie. I would willingly be stranded on an island if I could be assured that a pirate’s trunk full of fine aged Cabochard would be waiting for me there.
I still haven’t smelled it.
And I miss your blog, where I could read phrases like “pirate’s trunk full of fine aged Cabochard” more often. 🙂
Mals, I just discovered that the blog is back – just click on the link from the name.
Hey & howdy, Undina 🙂 ‘Tis true. I finally archived it after what, 3 years? Three very eventful and strange years… I hope you are well!
I’m fine, thank you. But I missed you and tried to look for your blog many times (it’s still in My Reading List list, just hidden since it wasn’t live for a while).
Any chance I can persuade you to make “Subscribe by email” available again?
You are too sweet. I peek in at yours all the time (and Suzanne’s, and Frida’s, and Ari’s, and JoanElaine’s, and…)
What Undina says is true; I put the blog back up– the original reviews plus 3 years worth of stuff I wrote for myself, face turned to the corner. But a person can’t live life like that now can they?… better to look out the window, walk out the door, say hello to folks again.
If anything, this week has been helpful in sorting through my mixed feelings about Daim Blond ( blind bought, of course, some while ago. I’ve never felt excited to reach for it but I reasoned it was useful, to layer with other scents…but the fact is I don’t own very many scents so it’s not really too useful, except that it works quite well with All Good Things. Anyway, think it’s time to say Adios.
Now, yesterday I was thinking about tea and so picked some Kawakawa during my bush walk. Kawakawa tea is now sold through a few companies but I simply seeped some leaves in boiling water and drank. It’s a kind of pepper tea and nips the tip of your tongue. It’s quite often mixed with ginger or tasted with Manuka honey…and it’s good for a number of ailments ( other than thirst ).
Also went and looked at the museum’s ambergris collection ….one piece had a big knot of nylon rope in it that had been swallowed by the whale and travelled all the way through its digestive system.
Ambergris is really interesting. Disgusting when you think about it, but the idea of this being such a valuable (and pricey!) ingredient used by perfumers is unique.
What museum is this? My family is from Sag Harbor on Long Island and out there they have a whaling museum and I wonder if I could see the ambergris there..
I bet you could see it there. You could ask.
I’m in the South Island of NZ, in Dunedin. Most of our ambergris washes up on the west coast of northland, I think…or down in the sub Antarctic islands. But I always look for it. It was interesting to see the range of colours, from black coal to pumice grey. I will be going in to smell sperm whale oil next week…this was used by Maori in the creation of body oils and perfumes, apparently. I think dog and rat oils were probably more commonly utilised but I’d need to check upon that.
Goodness how fascinating!
“Floating Gold” is a great book about ambergris. Even mentions a few of the high falutin’ perfume houses as well. It’s kind of a mediation on sperm whale poop and who could have guessed it’s a very intersting topic?!? I recommend it if you’re in the mood to increase your knowledge base about this highly coveted by-product of metabolism????
Thanks. I read it a couple of years ago…and didn’t Kevin write about it once? I have such a rubbish memory I need to read it again, though.
Wow! I’ll need to check this out.
I almost joined the Cuir de Lancôme camp, but I found a sample of ELDO’s Putain de palace, and was curious about it. Lovely rose violet make up and expensive buttery leather purse, I don’t think I’m very good at picking out animalistic notes. This is definitely an elegant and high class prostitute, if she is one, but I’m not sure she is yet.. Maybe the naughty bits develop later on?- she’s still powdering her nose and re doing her lipstick at the moment tho!
I don’t find PdP naughty at all.
Oh I’m glad it’s not just me!
I haven’t tried any of the other ElDO scents yet, but from reading reviews, many do not really live up to their names. I’m looking forward to trying Rien and Filles de Dieu tho.
I get, uhh… well-used underthings right from the beginning. That said, I’ve only tested but not worn it.
Probably just as well then!
I’m Team Cuir de Lancome today. It’s just so good. But I have a headache today, so that is impeding my enjoyment a bit.
Fortunately the headache has subsided, so I can enjoy my CdL more. 🙂
Glad you’re feeling better. 🙂
Wearing Byredo Black Saffron today from a sample. Normally I do not wear perfumes from samples but for this one I just signed up for a bigger decant with one of the FB split groups, so it’s almost like I already own it, right?
Oooh, I need to re-smell this!
Wore Bulgari Black in honor of its recent discontinuation. Kinda sad that this one is going away; I can’t imagine anyone making a perfume with such an obvious tire rubber note in it now. City life in a bottle. But I don’t think I’ll get a backup either – I only wear it in the winter, so I will enjoy what I have left.
Same. Have a bottle, sad that it’s gone, but don’t think it’s quite backup worthy.
It’s being discontinued?! Maybe I should get that replacement bottle. Hopefully it will still be relatively easy to find it at discounters, like the original Omnia.
Oh I meant to say that Putain de Palace seems like a wonderful fit with the novel I’m reading at the moment; ‘The Vagabond by Colette’- such a wonderful writer, and she describes scents so evocatively. This one is set in a music hall in the mid to late 19thC,lots of powder and grease paint and flower’s back stage, but rather gritty and sad, rather than idealised glamour of that world. Renee lives in a house for ‘ladies on their own’, and the story seems to be about loneliness, vulnerability and lack of security, and of course poverty, all the things which drove so many women into prostitution at this time.sorry to waffle on, but I’m so enjoying the story of this perfume complimenting my reading!
Oh, that sounds perfect!
I remember her descriptions of the fig trees in Break of Day. She is so good at observing and capturing the natural environment….she tunes into it so well. Must read the Vagabond. Thanks!
And I must hunt down The Break of Day, I imagine it’s a beautiful description. thanks kanuka!
Hello all!
I can finally comment once again! ( Thanks, Robin. xo )
It’s been such a long time since I’ve ‘talked’ here and I’m glad I am able to once more.
I chose Dior Cuir Cannage as my SotD. I don’t care for the beginning of this but the drydown is lovely.
And it’s going perfectly with our very spring like temps.
Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend. xo
Welcome back!! And I still have not tried Cuir Cannage. Way behind on the Dior Prive series.
I just smelled it (for the second time, I think) at the Copenhagen airport and thought is was very nice.
I wore this on Wednesday but did not get a chance to comment. The opening is super-camphorous, nice in its own way.
I love Cuir Cannage, you smell wonderful!
Such a clear, cold, and gorgeous day I decided to wear a classic, the original Polo Ralph Lauren. Always takes me back to the 7th grade in the best way ever!
Nice! I wanted Polo so so badly at just about that age (maybe a bit older.) Somehow I ended up with a bottle of Chaps instead. (I think Polo was both too expensive and also not sold at my local drugstore.) I still want some Grey Flannel, which I also coveted as a kid. Not sure why I haven’t picked up a little bottle of it yet.
I regularly find small bottles of Grey Flannel at T.J. Maxx for about $12-$15. Just sayin’. 🙂
Polo is the cologne I remember most of the boys wearing when I was 14 or 15. It was often sprayed in great quantities to disguise, ahem, other scents.
Forgot to add, you smell great, and nostalgic.
I borrowed Caron Yatagan today from my husband, for the leather note. I firmly believe perfume has no gender, and happily wear many fragrances marketed to men, but boy this one somehow just smells too manly for me! Not sure why, but I think I’ll leave it for the boys in my family from now on.
I routinely encourage my husband towards fragrances that I can dip into. He has no clue, hehehe. 😉
Morning, everyone! I have to say, you all smell wonderful in your versions of leather. I was really looking forward to joining this project, but even though Perfume Project Friday is onto its second iteration for us Downunder and I have another chance to participate, I still can’t face leather. Last night I couldn’t turn my thoughts off, and I think I finally fell asleep about 2.30. The idea of leather seems stifling, somehow, soI’m doing something in the interests of science: I’m walking out with 19 to see what she’s up to. It’s already rather hot, and so far, 19 is behaving impeccably. An old friend re-found, I hope…I went to bed wearing Premier Figuier last night. It really is lovely: earthy, solid, green, idiosyncratic. I wonder why I haven’t chosen it more often? I must make a point of it for work in the coming weeks. Saturday has started, though late and slowly for me. Enjoy yours when it arrives, NST.
Did you get to World yesterday?
No…the last lecture us hurting my head, and it’s only the one for Year 2 (I don’t mean that to be disparaging). I have the pints I needed teach, but I cannot make a coherent story of them. No World for me until it’s done. Maybe tomorrow?
A presence of pints? Perhaps that’s my problem…the points are dancing all over my .ppt file and just WON’T stay put. I’m not usually quite so hopeless!
I’ll come and do your lecture and you go to World!
Good morning Waterdragon, always looking forward to your comments! Very happy no 19 is on best behaviour after being so dreadfully out of character! Was planning something else but ended up with Pichola from a sample. Liking it much more than I was planning to.
You’re so kind! Pichola? I bet you smell gorgeous! I haven’t come across any of the NV perfumes so far, but they sound arrestingly beautiful. from the reviews and reactions here. I’ll have to exert myself to locate them when I’m in Melbourne in June. I’m planning a bit of a spend then: FBs of Ambre Narguile, a Chanel Exclusif-I love 28 La Pausa, so maybe that, or 22; I have a mad fancy for the oddly-named Feve Delicieux, though the bottle is so big you could swim in it. It would be good to step closer to the niche end of market if the NVs are available. They’re very unlikely to come to A-NZ.
It is gorgeous Waterdragon, a very beautiful radiant gauzy white flower, orange blossom is centre stage. Non indolic. I love Trayee very much, Mohur as well but less so as I am in a long but difficult courtship with rose. I find the NV perfumes multi faceted, showing something else each time I wear them.
I own the biggest bottle of La Pausa, supposedly it will get the chop but that may just be marketing tactics, and I love it to bits.
Continuing my leather wimpIshness, something completely not like leather this morning -AG’s Le Chèvrefeuille.
Beautiful!
Yum.
I don’t know this. Is it crisp and green? By the way, I’m standing in solidarity with you in wimping out on leather. Just too hot and humid.
Lovely green floral, not too sweet. The downside is that it doesn’t last, I’ve made rapid inroads into my 100ml bottle, but it wasn’t expensive so I hose it on freely.
I’m dancing off to Strawberrynet right now! I’ll report back.
Savoring my monthly rendezvous with my longtime love, Bottega Veneta. I have made myself a promise to not replace anything in my ever growing perfume menagerie. I have a third of the bottle left. YIKES! I will probably end up breaking that promise….
No replacements for loved scents? Perish the thought.
Or Black, or at least when I can smell it. I’ve had a cold all week, and either I can’t smell anything or what I can smell gives me a headache. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
Hope you’re better soon!!
At least you leave a nice scent in your wake for others to enjoy.
Immortelle Marilyn (Nez a Nez) is my choice for today. I usually wear this in the summer and fall, but it really is good any time of the year. The leather and raspberry are a nice combo.
Started the day in Gucci Eau de Parfum, the ’02 Tom Ford-visioned original. Lightened it later on with Kelly Caleche EDT = lovely green, citrus + leather. As it nears late afternoon, I’ve reached for a wee bit of Dune. Leather doesn’t seem to be officially listed in the latter’s notes, so maybe it’s the witch’s brew of palisander, broom, lichen, benzoin, and oakmoss that make me want to crack a whip. Beautiful stuff.
I am coming late to the party, but I’ve been wearing Heeley’s Cuir Plaine Fleur today and loving it!
Love that one, but my sample is long gone…
I had exercise classes today and am still scentless pending a decision on what to wear to a casual gathering this evening. I’m now considering Caron Parfum Sacre, which seems to go with the cold but brilliantly clear and sunny day we had. If I were staying home, however, I’d have immersed myself in Tabac Blond by now.
By the way, am I alone in thinking that Robin rather enjoyed cracking that whip this week? 😉
🙂
But see – it worked! I bet more people participated in the theme than not.
I was planning to wear boxeuses, but it suddenly felt too fruity and pink for the meeting I was going to face – in spite of its name. So I wore a lote of vintage Joy, which I find truly bitchy in the kindesy way. Good choice: all my women co-workers were missing somehow, the guys were behaving like barbarians and Joy made me feel miles above their testosterone-induced freak show. Old faithful Joy. I even think there is a little leather in there.
Sorry for all the typos! Need to get my reading glasses.
Joy sounds absolutely perfect for you’re day, good choice!
Joy is my #1 favorite. So fantastic.
I considered Boxeuses for yesterday but Puredistance M worked just as well!
Late day at work today, and no time to read. But wearing Cuir de Lancome in solidarity with the theme!
SOTD Cuir d’Ange. Leather is possibly my favorite note and I have many FBs to chose from. Went with an inoffensive choice since I was at work at the hospital today before leaving for the airport and my flight.
Wearing a tiny spritz of Tuscan Leather, just to be different. 🙂
You smelled great! (and different)
I thought about wearing it but wimped out: I love it on my vSO but have never tried it on my skin. One day… 🙂
I”m going to put my small decant on my husband’s desk, in hopes that he’ll wear it!
As I float away from ocean’s edge on my raft, sturdy and pleasing, composed entirely of bergamot oranges and held together with jasmine, gardenia and ylang-ylang, a leather clad gentleman waves frantically from the shore. Estée Lauder Azuree for me today and for some reason this image just popped into my head.
What a lovely, fragrant, dreamy image. If only we could be there with you!
At least I know that scent. 😉
It does sound nice. I’ll have to try it again, to see if I can smell the flowers, instead of just the gentleman in leather, wearing a citrusy cologne.
Wearing Traversée du Bosphore, which on me is mostly cotton candy and leather, and is oddly delightful. My only other bottle with a prominent leather note is Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau. Leather has a tendency to go sour on me. I like Bottega Veneta Eau Legere, too, but not quite enough to pay retail for it.
Finally made it to the end, and I think I’m alone in TdB, although a couple of people mentioned that they considered wearing it.
I wore Cuir Beluga, which I usually enjoy so much. But it was decidedly the wrong choice yesterday. It was so strong and added to my stress headache and slight upset stomach (work has been stressful and I’ve been making bad food choices). I am very limited on perfume choices right now because I just moved to a new apartment. Most of my perfume is still packed up, so I am just working with a container of a fraction of my decants.
